EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to the first issue of Snapixel Magazine, our version of a theme-based, community-driven media publication. Our goal is to promote creative a nd engaging photography and the photographers behind the camera. As technology advances, photography constantly transitions. Yet the moment of time captured in an instant - in the snap of a photograph - continues to create an emotional response. Photography will always be an inspiring and powerful form of communication. Each month, we’ll publish an online PDF and an on-demand print version of Snapixel Magazine. By doing so, we help reduce paper waste and avoid the costly overhead seen by traditional publishing companies. In the future, we may create a glossy, retail version available in your nearest bookstore. In this issue, you’ll find photographs based on the theme Habitat, submitted by Snapixel members. The collection documents an array of environments - from oceans to homes to subway stations. Q & A with Jen O’Neal, Co-Founder of Tripping.com What is Tripping.com? Tripping is a social network for travelers who want to connect with local people, wherever they go. For example... imagine visiting Paris and only seeing the Eiffel Tower. While you probably enjoyed the view from the top, you completely missed the best par ts - and the real culture - of Paris. With Tripping , you can meet Parisians who will show you their favorite spots, bring you to their friends ’ par ties and even invite you to stay in their homes. It’s pretty great . So, what do locals get out of it? Tripping is like having the world come to you. The instant you star t meeting travelers, you’ll find yourself surrounded by fun, colorful and i nteresting people. You’ll get to share your life with them and, in turn, you’ll learn about their countries and cultures. And then, when you have time to travel , you’ll have friends to visit all over the world. Who is on the Tripping team? My cofounder and CTO is Nate Weisiger. We were both among the first employees at StubHub (which was acquired by eBay in 2007) and we’ve remained friends ever since. Our Par tnerships Director, Jeff Manheimer, came from Travelzoo and we also have some terrific deve lopers and in terns from around the world. It’s a great team. Wit h i n j u s t 1 we e k of l a u n c h i n g o u r p u b l i c beta site, Tripping had over 500 members from 37 countries. Overall , the res p o n s e f ro m t h e co m m u n i ty h as b e e n ove r whelmingly positive and we’re growing fast . Wh a t i s yo u r n ex t d e s t i n a t i o n ? My s i s te r a n d I have b e e n wa n t i n g to h i k e to Machu Picchu for her bir thday, so that will probably be my next trip. G a d gets are wonderful , but it can be an expensive habit! I recently got a F l i p Ultra which I am looking for ward to using for on-the-go videog ra p hy. I would love to have a DSLR like the Nikon D-90, or if I wanted to s p l u rge, the Canon EOS 5D. Also, I would love to shoot with a RED Camera as I ' ve heard some fantastic feedback. W h a t projects are you currently working on? Any thing coming up in t h e near future? C u r rently, I am working on two projects: Rad on the Web on Mevio [rad o n theweb.mevio.com] and V01d [www.theV01d.com]. Rad on the Web w i l l be 35 episodes in by the end of 2009, and it's been a great experi e n ce. I co-host and co-produce the show weekly live on Justin.T V [ jus t i n .tv/radontheweb] with Carlos Rodela. I love reviewing websites and f i n d ing ones that can make life easier and more streamlined. V01d is a co mmunity based show on technological modification that should be l a u n ching in early 2010, and we just recently went into beta with our we b site [www.theV01d.com]. My par tner Colleen Kelly from the T WiT netwo r k and I hope to build a global team of modders and showcase proj e c t s that we've already shot . V01d will provide a springboard for those t h a t are new to the world of pushing tech to its limits and also pose c h a l lenges to the more experienced as well . O n t h a t l e ve l , I h o p e t h at people feel like they know me and that I am a friend. Who I am on camera , twe e t i n g , o r i n a b l o g p o s t i s w h o I a m w i th my family and friends. On one of my first shoots ever, my co-host of told m e t h a t " yo u h ave to b e s l i g h t l y s c h i zo p hrenic" to be a personality. Although I agree that you have to mute things t h a t m i g h t b e u p s e t t i n g yo u to d o a s h ow as positively as possible, I don't think that it has to be disingenuous. With m e , w h a t yo u s e e i s w h a t yo u ge t a n d I a p preciate the suppor t that I have received from my followers. To me, the com m u n i ty i s t h e m o s t i m p o r t a n t t h i n g a n d I tr y to never overlook its value in my life. I always make sure to write back to c l o s e to e ve r y e m a i l I ge t f ro m a f a n a n d appreciate the online friends that I have made through my work. I don't k n ow m a ny e n g i n e e r s o r l aw ye r s t h a t ge t accolades for living out their passion from complete strangers via email . I t's a u n i q u e f i e l d t h a t I a m a m a ze d a n d grateful to be a par t of ever y second of ever y day. I wouldn't trade it for a ny o t h e r p rofe s s i o n i n t h e wo r l d - -we l l e xcept super hero. But, I don't think those exist in this universe....yet .
