Fire Restrictions Implemented for Dixie N.F. and Southwest Utah SOUTHWEST UTAH Due to another year of ongoing drought and record low precipitation levels, Color Country Interagency Fire Managers has implemented fire restrictions on the Arizona Strip and all unincorporated county, state and federally administered public lands in the following Utah counties: Washington, Kane, Garfield, and Iron. “May through August is typically a critical time for southern Utahns as both visitor numbers and fire danger tends to exponentially increase. This year’s outlook is no different,” said Bureau of Land Management Color Country and Paria River Districts Fire Management Officer Josh Tibbetts. “Predictive services warns that southern Utah’s Energy Release Component (ERC) is approaching critical thresholds. The ERC can serve as a good indicator of what we anticipate a fire season could look like across a designated area, as it tracks seasonal fire danger trends well.” While fire restrictions are in effect, the following Fire Restrictions Cont'd on page 2

UDWR Drought Update
May 26 SALT LAKE CITY - As spring runoff dwindles, Utah begins its drying out period. Soil moisture is decaying faster than usual this water year, and this could mean heightened fire danger this summer. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 99% of the state is in the second and third-worst categories: severe and extreme drought. “...I urge residents to use good Fire Sense and check for impacts, such as boat ramp closures, before heading out to state parks,” said Brian Steed, executive director of the Department of Natural Resources. “When recreating at Utah’s beautiful reservoirs, remember, our reservoirs aren’t just for fun, they store our water and help get us through drought.” At-a-glance highlights: • Great Salt Lake typically drops a little over two feet each summer. With a current elevation of 4190.8, this would mean the lake could hit a new historic low. Drought Update Cont'd on page 8

UTAH - Currently, 72% of Utah is experiencing extreme drought, with the remainder of the state in severe drought. With a dry summer likely and water restrictions already in place around the state, it is crucial that Utahns conserve the water we have. One bright spot is the recent precipitation in northern Utah, which means that soil water stores have been replenished and irrigation can be postponed. According to Kelly Kopp, Utah State University Extension water conservation and turfgrass specialist, Utah is the second driest state in the nation based on average annual precipitation, yet one of the top per capita users of water. In addition, urban landscape irrigation accounts for up to 65% of the annual municipal water use, and much of that is applied in excess of what plants actually need. “We all need to conserve in every way possible so that we have enough water for public consumption, instream flows, and agricultural production,” Kopp said. “Scheduling landscape irrigation according to plant water needs
