ESCALANTE - The difference between a Ranch Rodeo and a traditional rodeo is that a Ranch Rodeo is used to showcase traditional ranching skills, placing ranch teams, and sometimes individual

team members in "real work” situations, such as livestock sorting, doctoring and branding. Some ranch rodeos may also include events such as trailer loading and stock horse classes, used to exhibit a stock

horse's abilities. And you may even find a saddle bronc riding event, however, unlike the traditional rodeo, the team member is allowed to use two hands to stay on as well as use a western saddle, not a bronc

saddle. Although in both rodeos roping events are timed, Ranch Roping events will usually have time limits and teams Ranch Rendezvous

TORREY – Torrey’s Stray Arrow Ranch has been selected as one of two Utah farms to receive Value-Added Producer Grant funds from USDA Rural Development. VAPG grants are aimed to help farmers explore product innovation

and new marketing opportunities.

USDA’s October 27 announcement stated that Stray Arrow Ranch is receiving the $12,500 grant to produce a market feasibility study with the goal of creating a cidery plan.

Stray Arrow Ranch, owned by Ann Torrence and Robert Marc, is Utah’s first orchard to produce apples specifically for artisanal hard cider. “The study will help to assure the USDA that we have a viable business before we apply for phase two of funding,” said Torrence. “And it will also help us to position our product for our fairly unique touristbased economy,” she said.

Torrence and Marc began planting apples in 2012, and now have over seventyfive varieties growing on six acres. Torrence says that she and Marc conducted extensive research on what varieties make great cider, especially American heritage fruit.

Dear Editor, We wish to express our most heartfelt gratitude to all those who helped in every way in the search and rescue of our son Daxon Porter on November 1st and 2nd . The willingness and number of volunteers was overwhelming. Due to your diligence Daxon is recovering well and has no permanent injuries from exposure. We are grateful to Garfield County Search and Rescue, and the volunteers from Piute and other counties.

We also wish to thank those who spread the word, brought in food, and said prayers in our behalf. We know there were many others who were helping in any way they could, we are thankful for your kindnesses.

USDA to Collect Final 2016 Crop Production and Crop Stocks Data LAKEWOOD, CO – As the 2016 growing season officially comes to an end, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to gather final yearend crop production numbers and the amount of grain and oilseeds they store on their farms. At the same time, NASS will survey grain facility operators to determine year-end off-farm grain and oilseed stocks.

“These surveys are the largest and most important year-end surveys conducted

by NASS,” explained NASS

Mountain Region Director Bill Meyer. “They are the basis for the official USDA estimates of production and harvested acres of all major agricultural commodities in the United States, as well as year-end grain and oilseed supplies. Data from the survey will benefit farmers and processors by providing timely and accurate information to help them make critical yearend business decisions and begin planning for the next growing and marketing season.”

The information will be compiled, analyzed and then published in a series of USDA

reports. The Crop Production Annual Summary and quarterly Grain Stocks report will be published on January 12, 2016.

“Responses to the producer survey will be included in the County Agricultural Production Survey and used in calculating county yields,” explained Meyer. “USDA uses county yield information from the survey to evaluate and administer vital farm disaster and insurance programs. Farmers who receive this survey are not included in the County Agricultural Production Survey; therefore this is their only opportunity to be

included in the calculation of their state’s county yields.”

As with all NASS surveys, information provided by respondents is confidential, as required by federal law.

NASS safeguards the privacy of all responses and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified.

Bighorn Sheep Veiwing Event Near Green River

GREEN RIVER- Free wildlife viewing event on Nov. 12. You can see Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep up close at the annual Bighorn Sheep Watch near Green River. The Division of Wildlife Resources will host the public event on Saturday, Nov. 12, along an 8-mile stretch of the Green River in southeastern Utah.

The event is free.

“November is the time of year, known as the rut, when bighorn sheep breed,” says Morgan Jacobsen, regional conservation outreach manager

for the DWR. “During the rut, bighorn sheep are less wary of people, so it’s a great time to observe the bighorns and photograph them.”

Since the sheep are focused on courtship and breeding, Jacobsen says it’s easier to get relatively close to the sheep without spooking them.

In past years, participants have gotten within 50 yards of bighorns. Occasionally, they’ve seen rams butt heads. Most of the time, though, they’ve watched large rams kick and harass smaller males. “Watching

the rutting behavior of Utah’s bighorn sheep is a singular experience,” Jacobsen says.

Preregistration is required to participate, and slots will be filled on a first-come, firstserved basis. The trip is limited to 15 vehicles.

Participants should bring a camera and binoculars or a spotting scope. If you don’t have your own binoculars or a spotting scope, Jacobsen has extras you can use. “Wear warm clothes,” he says, “and bring water, snacks or a lunch.”

the weather are unpredictable, Jacobsen says there's no guarantee you’ll see sheep. “Regardless of the outcome,” he says, “the beauty of the Green River will make the trip worthwhile.”

Hunting, loss of food from livestock grazing and disease from domestic livestock have devastated bighorn sheep populations. While livestock is not as much of a threat as in the past, loss of habitat from development is an increasing threat.

Normally, predators like mountain lions, wolves, bobcats, coyotes and golden eagles do not pose a threat to bighorn sheep.

However, in areas where sheep populations are low, the death of a sheep from a natural predator can be a risk to the larger population.

Losses have occurred primarily at lower elevations, where increases in temperature and decreases in precipitation have reduced the amount of vegetation available for foraging and the freshwater springs they depend on for water. More populations of desert bighorn sheep may be at risk as the southwestern climate continues to become hotter and dryer.

Safety is a core value and is simply how we operate. This did not happen overnight. The Fishlake Safety Committee has been critical to this evolution of our safety culture on the forest. Seats on the forest safety committee are coveted. Members often enjoy the collateral duty so much that they serve as long as their supervisor allows. This consistency in commitment is exemplified in the programs they have developed and from the culture that can be found on the forest now.

The result - Employees don’t just have to be safe…they want to be safe and they want their coworkers to be safe.

“As a measure of success, for the last five years, our Office of Workman’s Compensation Program costs/claims have consistently been among the lowest in the Region. Our robust safety award program has an approximate 85 percent or higher participation rate (seasonal and permanent employees), 195 participants in 2016.” said Fishlake Forest Supervisor Mel Bolling.

At a recent ceremony at the Weber Basin Job Corps Center employees accepted the two awards. Richfield District Ranger Jason Kling, on behalf of the entire Monroe Mountain Project Interdisciplinary Team, accepted the award for Sustaining Forests and Grasslands. Assistant Forest Safety Officer Wess Freeborn, on behalf of the entire Fishlake National Forest Safety Committee, accepted the award for Creating a Safety Culture.

2016 Christmas Tree Cutting on the National Forest in Utah SALT LAKE CITY – Cutting a Christmas tree in a national forest is a family tradition for many residents of Utah. Weather conditions in the mountains are unpredictable, so always be prepared for winter weather. Stay on designated roads and trails. Be prepared for slick, snow-packed roads and have chains, a 4-wheel drive vehicle, or a snow machine available. Let someone know where you are planning to go and approximate time you will return. Carry a cell phone; bring additional warm clothing, and gloves, boots, and a container of hot liquid, water, and a lunch or snack. Carry a flashlight, chains, shovel, firstaid kit, matches, a hatchet, ax or handsaw, and rope to secure your tree.

Trees must always be cut close to the ground leaving the stump no higher than 6 inches.

A shovel will come in handy to dig through the snow to reach the base of the tree. Make sure your permit is attached to the tree before leaving the cutting area.

TREE TOPPING IS NOT ALLOWED. No cutting is al-

lowed within 200 feet of riparian areas (lakes and streams), roads, campgrounds, picnic areas, administrative sites, summer home areas, or within designated closed areas shown on tree cutting area maps.

Wind Energy Costs Could Fall by 40 Percent by 2050

SALT LAKE CITY Some of the answers to the challenges of switching to clean energy could be blowing in the wind, according to a survey of wind power experts led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Researchers found advances in technology should continue to drive down wind energy costs by as much as 30 percent by the year 2030, and more than 40 percent by 2050. Social Security Announces 0.3 Percent Benefit Increase for 2017

SALT LAKE CITY - Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 65 million Americans will increase 0.3 percent in 2017, the Social Security Administration announced today.

The 0.3 percent cost-ofliving adjustment (COLA) will begin with benefits payable to more than 60 million Social Security beneficiaries in January 2017. Increased payments to more than 8 million SSI beneficiaries will begin on December 30, 2016. The Social Secu-

rity Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $127,200 from $118,500.

Of the estimated 173 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2017, about

12 million will pay more because of the increase in the taxable maximum. Information about Medicare changes for 2017, when announced, will be available at www.Medicare. gov. For some beneficiaries, their Social Security increase may be partially or completely offset by increases in Medicare premiums.

Partisan vs. Non-Partisan

Someone asked for the purpose of a non-partisan election.

The term non-partisan basically means the lack of a political affiliation. With that said, our most notable non-partisan election is our school board election, where we expect our candidates to be running for the sake of the students and not a political party’s interest. Additionally, we usually vote for support of judges and some positions in local and county elections using a non-partisan format.

On the other hand, partisan elections are built on battle lines with parties clashing for specific causes or outcomes. Most people share a commonality for supporting a platform or list of shared ideologies. For the past year, the partisan race for the presidency of the United States has been an excellent example of a partisan election. There is no question the country has a two party system with several other parties competing for recognition also.

In our local school board elections, there is an absence of party affiliation and the candidates are running on their individual merits and views concerning their vision of education and their desire for helping the education process. In 1647, the American Board of Education was born.

Later, the US Constitution, through the Tenth Amendment, left authority over education in the hands of the states who passed that authority to the local school boards. In Utah, the locally elected members of the school board are empowered to make policy, control the budgets, and fiscal responsibility on behalf of the citizenry. The functions and decisions of school boards are important; often those decisions made have a greater long-term impact on our communities and children than those of any other elected bodies of government.

Utah Symphony Comes to Wayne County

Music is a form of art that has been around for thousands of years, from mystical incantations to electronic sounds. On October 14, the Utah Symphony graced Wayne High School with their presence and brought culture to students and community members. This was made possible through the Professional Outreach Program in the Schools (POPS), which was established by the Utah State Legislature and the Utah State Board of Education. The goal of the program is to encourage students across the state to join an art program within their communities. The eminent Rei Hotoda conducted the performance. Ms. Hotoda is an accomplished pianist and conductor, with a Doctor of Musical Arts; she has collaborated with many famous artists, such as Idina Menzel and Pink Martini. With brilliant professionalism, she conducted the ensemble, to play a variety of classical dance music from around the world. The selections ranged from compositions by Maurice Ravel to Johann Sebastian Bach, from Edvard Grieg to Aaron Copland. The students, staff, and community members of Wayne County would like to thank the Utah Symphony and the Utah State Board of Education for providing students all across the state an opportunity to learn about classical music.

Wayne High Hosts 2016 Region Girls Volleyball

The art of volleyball has always been a tradition throughout the region. On October 21, 2016 Wayne High School had the honor of hosting the 2016 Region 20 Girls Volleyball Tournament.

Everyone had a great time cheering and watching every team play their hardest. The teams placed as follows: Panguitch in 1st, Milford in 2nd, Piute in 3rd, Bryce Valley in 4th, Wayne in 5th, and Valley in 6th. One of our girls, Maloree Mitchell, was placed on the All-Region team. This is a huge honor because this award is given to players the coaches feel stood out amongst the many other contenders. Thank you to all the girls who represented their respective schools and see you next season.

Let's Make Some Noise!

The fall sports are over with and I thought that it would be awhile for the winter sports to begin. Wrong again! The Lady Cats season start next week with a game here against Water Canyon on Nov. 17. On the 18th and 19th they go up to SVC and they play Monticello at 4:00 on the 18th and Duchesne on the 19th at (3:00). On the 22nd the Cats meet up with North Sevier here and it will be an Endowment game and there will be a charge for it. The Lady Cats are coming off 3 championship years and like the volleyball team, it could be a rebuilding year or it could like the volleyball team and play for the title.

The Boys games don’t start till Nov. 23 and the game will be out at Enterprise. On Dec 1st the Cats go out to Wayne for their first league game. Finally they have a home game on Dec 8th against Bryce Valley. The Boys look like they are going to have a very good team and should be really entertaining.

The tough guys have their Panguitch invitational on Dec 2-3rd and it will be at the Triple C Arena. I am not a wrestling fan, but when I go I am always surprised at what large fan base there is. This team has a number of returning State Champs from last year, wrestling is really hard to predict the outcome, it is a really tough sport and with all of the injuries you can’t really know who will still be standing at the end of the season.

Panguitch is really blessed to have so many really great coaches. The Barney brothers will field the basketball teams that entertain us old folks during the winter. The Marshall Brothers will be handling the wrestlers; both of the Marshall’s were top notch wrestlers in their day.

Over the last twenty five years I have seen so many coaches come and go in these small towns, they usually go because of the parents. When someone puts in as much effort in building a team as these coaches do, they need applauses not criticism. All of these coaches that we have here start working with the kids in the fourth grade, so that they aren’t learning a sport when they reach high school level. CLAP, CLAP, CLAP for the coaches! Clap, Clap, Clap for the athletes, you make our lives more enjoyable.

The Halloween Carnival was a lot of fun of Monday! The junior class had a chili dinner as a fundraiser, and the elementary had a parade to show off their costumes. On Saturday the Sophomore class put on a Monster Mash dance at the High School. Everyone that came out had a great time! Monday November 7th is the first day of wrestling and basketball practices, so everyone get ready to come to the upcoming meets and games to cheer on our mustangs!

Utah Symphony Visits Loa Elementary Students Hi my name is Lacey Ellett. October 14, 2016 was a beautiful fall morning, and to make it even better we were going to the Symphony. The forth and fifth grade classes from Loa Elementary, along with Wayne Middle School and Wayne High School students got to go to the Wayne High School auditorium and watch the Utah Symphony.

As all of us sat respectfully in our seats, we were amazed at all the instruments. We watched as the conductor, Ray Soto, told us about all of the songs. The whole performance centered around how different cultures around the world use

music to represent their culture through dance.

My favorite song in the symphony was the “Ho Down.”

The Ho Down was a dance that people from the Western United States used to do after they had completed their difficult chores.

They enjoyed getting together to square dance and ho-down with their buddies. We all got out of our eats and we got to dance to some of the music. It was fast and energetic and everyone loved it.

I was honored that the Utah Symphony came to Wayne County clear from Salt Lake City. I’m glad that they let us get up and dance, and that we

were able to hear them play.

Hi my name is Jake Peterson. On October 14, 2016 I, and the rest of the fourth and fifth grades of Loa Elementary went to Bicknell, Utah. We went to the Wayne High School auditorium. The Wayne Middle School student were there too.

We went to watch the Utah Symphony play.

The Utah Symphony was amazing. They played dancing songs from all over the globe.

The audience even did a little bit of dancing. Thy had violins, and chills, and they even had a triangle. They had a lot of other instruments too. The whole stage was filled with awesome

looking instruments and accomplished musicians. It was tulle amazing to hear how talented the group was and how they played perfectly together.

My favorite part of the morning was when they played the closing act. I loved this song because of it’s speed. It was a fast dancing song. The conductor said it originated from Mexico. It was a very beautiful song.

In closing I would like to say thanks to the Utah Symphony for coming to my community. They are an inspiring group of people who show that hard work pays off. I was very impressed.

Good News

In our culture it is customary for a person to execute a Last Will and Testament or Revocable Trust that sets forth the distribution of material things.

But there is a concept that, although not new, is gaining popularity by those who wish to pass on things that may be more important than assets.

The “Ethical Will” is a statement of personal values.

It can set forth life philosophies, wishes or appeals for family harmony, religious testimonials, reasons for arranging one’s estate the way one has – almost any final message that a person wants another (or others) to know after he or she is gone.

An Ethical Will could be defined as any personal message from a parent or grandparent – or anyone – to the survivors who are of the highest significance. A close friend, an attorney, or a trusted family member will know that the Ethical Will exists, its location, and when and to whom it should be delivered or its location made known. Most times such letters are only delivered after a person has passed away, according to specific instruc-

tions left beforehand by the writer.

It is not easy to write – or to read – an Ethical Will.

The writer probes and evaluates personal convictions and biases, and confronts reality.

The process compels self-examination of what had been learned over a lifetime, facing up to failures as well as successes, and deciding what really counted in the long run.

Examining one's thoughts and motives for an "Ethical Will" includes whether such a document should really be written.

The "Will" can be taped, if that is easier or more appropriate than writing. If time permits, drafts might be set aside for a few weeks or months, then critically reviewed by the author. Will what was written be meaningful, or even significant, to those who read it?

Visualize it being read aloud to the family by a spouse or other member of the family. Will the content uplift and cause improvements in lifestyles, or understanding of certain decisions? Will it express thoughts with kindness and love? Will it offer forgiveness for a longstanding grudge? Will it give

The Ethical Will can be a forum for expressing deep and philosophical opinions, for leaving a piece of oneself that may have been difficult to reveal while alive, or for any reason that is important to the writer.

It is yet one more way to leave behind a legacy – a legacy of who you are and what you thought important enough to let your loved ones know – after you are gone.

Steve, my accountant husband, and I both suffer from occasional bouts of insomnia.

O bituaries Mae Twitchell 1943 - 2016

CANNONVILLE - Mae Arjean Goulding Twitchell, 92, passed away November 1, 2016 in Panguitch. She was born October 3, 1924 in Henrieville to William Elan and Mary Almeda Willis Goulding. She married Vaughn Tyler Twitchell, September 21, 1943 in the St. George Temple. He preceded her in death, November 11, 2014.

Mae is a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many church positions, including Relief Society president; but the calling she cherished most was Primary chorister. She especially loved young people and constantly expressed that love to her children and grandchildren. She was known and loved by countless family, neighbors and friends simply as "the best" mom, grandma and Aunt Mae. Mom loved to mix with friends and was a proficient square dancing partner with Dad. She and Dad were also a singing duet — Mom, with her mellow alto perfectly matching Dad’s high-pitched tenor. She never sought or received worldly acclaim or credentials, but Mae built a lasting legacy by welcoming everyone she met with love, friendship and that winning smile. She was the queen of hospitality — no one was excluded. Mom worked at several occupations in her life time, Including Cannonville postmistress and manager for Utah Park’s Bryce Canyon Inn. She retired from her job as a motel clerk, first with Pink Cliffs Motel and last with Bryce Canyon Pines, where she developed a special relationship with the Rich family. In all her jobs she made friends and connected with people from all over the world. We are many that mourn her passing; but they are more numerous welcoming and celebrating with her on the other side.

Mae’s family gives special thanks to Dr. Thomas Marshall and his assistant, Leann, for a lifetime of loving care.

We also acknowledge the compassionate and loving service rendered by Erica and Greg Broderick, Horizon Home Health, Dr. Collin Marshall and the staff at Garfield Memorial Hospital & Long Term Care. All were and have been a great comfort to Mom and the family, especially these past few weeks.

Mae is survived by her children: Ron (Leah) Twitchell, South Jordan; Craig Twitchell, Bountiful; Doug (Tammy) Twitchell, Cedar City; Arjean (Stewart) Ivie, Cannonville; Lori (Karl) Munford, Cedar City; 35 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Ross Twitchell; one grandchild; six brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Cannonville Ward Chapel, where friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Cannonville Cemetery. Funeral Directors: Magleby Mortuary, Richfield, Salina and Manti.

In the last four months we have lost 4 hours of daylight, but today Sunday, November 06, 2016 we lost another hour also, due to going back to standard time. In a survey run in San Diego on whether to stay on day light savings time, of the hundreds of thousand that voted, 84% preferred to stay on day light saving year around. The long dark evenings and sunrises in June would be at 4 am, if they stayed on standard time, was what they didn’t like. Every year we have kids killed on the highway at night because the drivers didn’t see them because it is dark at 5:30 pm.

Your power bill goes up as does your heating bill, if you have small kids keep them off Main St. at night the lighting is very poor, especially at first North Main where both street lights are burned out.

My worst fear is that the legislator from up north that keeps pushing to stay on standard time, every year will convince his colleagues in Congress that day light saving is a government conspiracy and it will get voted down if it ever comes up for a vote.

Tomorrow is Veterans Day 11-11 and the American Legion is hosting their annual dinner at the Senior Center and it will start at 6:30 pm. I have had many calls on who is coming, but because you haven’t called don’t let that stop you.

There will be great food and entertainment and it will be a fun evening. All Veterans and their spouses and Widows of Veterans from Hatch and Panguitch are invited. Legionnaires please bring your dues.

There will be a Veterans program at the Elementary School on Friday also and all Veterans are invited to attend.

It is a nice program and the students do the program. Call the school for a time.

Saturday is the Craft Fair and that starts at 10:00am and is held at the Fair Building.

This Fair is a great place to look for early Christmas gifts, come early for the best choices. PHS will sell luncheon goodies, so you won’t have to leave the building and interrupt your shopping. Also Santa will have her candies and sweet treats for sale. The items that are for sale are donated by

the best candy / bakers around and the money earned goes for the Sub for Santa fund. If you have not been contacted to donate and would like to, please bring it to the Fair building by 9:30 (if you can) it will be highly appreciated.

Also the Sub for Santa booth has a drawing every ½ hour, tickets 6 / $5.00 , and the main prizes donated by Mandy and Karla are $$$’s to be spent at the Craft Fair. Claudia Crump has donated a Christmas quilt (she has donated one for the last 10 years or so) You can see the quilt and buy chances for 6/$5.00 . The drawing will be on Saturday December 4th at Christmas in the Country--Social Hall.

PHS’s drama club will also be doing “ Hello Dolly” at the High School and that started last night and runs through Saturday. It will start at 7:00pm and the cost is $5.00 or $25.00 for a family of six.

Elaine and Cheryl will again present an excellent production.

Last Friday night was the Search and Rescue dinner that was well attended. Sheriff Perkins said that Utah is number 1 in volunteerism in the country. With 70 member of the Search and Rescue squad, with all of the Fire Fighters and EMTs, volunteers that help out on all of the events that take place, the meals on wheels folks, the Lions Clubs, Danny was wondering what percentage Garfield Co. made up of the State. I bet we are the county with the most volunteers… clap, clap, clap!

The big news from last week was the Chicago Cubs overcame Cleveland’s 3 to 1 lead to win the World Series for the first time in 108 years.

More people watched the seventh game of the series than had in 25 years. A crowd of over 5 million welcomed the team home with their Cham-

pionship.

Some items from the SL Tribune. The State is going to spend 1.4 million dollars on repairing the two tunnels in Red Canyon. These tunnels are in need of repair on the concrete work in inside of the tunnels. Many of the tourists stop there and take pictures of what must be a couple of the smallest tunnels in the world.

Home prices in the SLC County have topped the records levels that was reached before the great recession.

The average house cost is at the $300,000 level up 7% from last year. The reason they say is because the unavailability of homes in the area.

Kennecott to close 3 of 4 Magna coal fired generation units. This will remove 3,500 tons of particulates from the air annually. They will get their power from Rocky Mountain Power, who gets 30% of their energy from reusable sources, but their primary source is still coal. It will get the coal particulates away from the Wasatch front, but they will still be elsewhere. It is good news for the rate users across Utah, Kennecott will be footing the bill for much of the State, which should mean lower rates.

Could coal be the environmentally friendly material of the future? Many see that coal is an energy source of the past. Scientist at the University of Utah is looking to turn the state rock into carbon fiber. A high tech material that is light and strong, (they use in the bodies of race cars). If an economical way to use coal to produce carbon fiber and have enough useful products so there can be a market for it, then there is a new direction for the coal industry.

Carbon fiber is used to produce materials that are low in weight and thermal expansion and are high in tensile

strength, stiffness and chemical resistance. It is used in prosthetic limbs, skis, aircraft and satellites. Carbon fiber is now typically produced from polyacrylonitrile, which is produced from petroleum.

Currently there are 30 companies manufacturing items, in the State, that include carbon fiber and they employ more than 12,000 workers.

President Barack Obama’s administration dispatched a senior official to SLC to announce the distribution of $7.7 million in grants from the U.S. economic development Administration in support of 14 research projects.

Coal is plentiful and with all of the possibilities out there, it opens up a whole new industry.

Wholesale oil reached its high last month at $52 dollars a barrel, however on last Friday it closed at $43 dollars. Garfield County seems to have some of the highest gas prices in the country. If you go north in Elsinore they have 87 octanes for $2.26, west in Parowan gas is going for $2.20. Up north it is at its cheapest at $2.08 at many stations. If you don’t leave town it doesn’t matter what you pay because you don’t use that much.

Finally after what seems like 5 years, the election is over with. Regardless of who wins the election, I hope that the country can get back to being America. All of this hatred that is going on is so sad. Hate can destroy you, it will raise you BP, eat at your stomach and make you miserable to be around. Presidents get much of the blame for things that go wrong and little credit for when things go right. My observation is that the President has little power and our country is controlled by Congress, they are the ones that write the bills and make the laws.

The Trunk or Treat was successful because there were hardly any trick or treaters around town. The people who put it together did a great job and the Carnival was as usual a big success and the kids and adults had a great time.

There are a few families that have been traveling while the weather holds out. Dean and Karleen McInelly went to Grand Canyon and had a great time. The Shawn and Crystal Mortensen and family had been out at Nauvoo and Carthidge. Others have been hunting or some of us have just stayed home and enjoyed the smell and look of autumn.

If you didn't get into the canyons to see the bright leaves

then maybe you got to drive by State Bank in Tropic and see the beautiful colored leaves on the trees out front. So pretty.

This youngster demonstrates good Dummy Roping skills during the Ranch Rendezvous. The contestant stands between 3 to 5 feet from the 'dummy.' Each contestant can throw 5 loops. A slick horn catch is worth 3 points, half head is worth 2 points and a neck loop is worth 1 point. No points for a missed catch. The most points wins. It isn't as easy as it looks!

Friday night was the Cattleman’s Concert with performances from local artists Mary Kaye and the Kaye sisters, Braken and Kage Lyman, Ryen Treanor, Brent Griffin and Ted Engberg. They also invited professional cowboy poet, Jessica Hedges from Nevada and the Broken Chair band from Arizona to perform.

Saturday morning was the ranch rodeo that focused on traditional ranching skills with Team Doctoring, Team Branding and Alley Sorting.

Team CJL Ranch, Chad Klace and Braken Lyman were the winners. In second place were Phillips Ranch, Todd, Trey, and Tye Phillips. Third place winners were Team Go Go Girls, Mike and Lincoln Porter and Tyrell Spencer. Lincoln Porter won "Top Hand” Junior and Todd Phillips won “Top Hand” senior. Cody Dunton was awarded the “Hard Luck” buckle for the day.

They also had a Dummy Roping and the winner of the 6 and under age group was Kannon Lyman and the 7to 10 year

olds winner was Dax Godsey.

The Escalante Family Ranch Rodeo offers an education scholarship to students.

This year’s award will be in honor of local cowboy, Delane Griffin. Students can apply for educational scholarships in the following areas, stockman management, horsemanship, farierry (that’s horseshoeing in English), music, and tack and saddle making. TORREY - Monty Charles Hunt, 63, passed away peacefully at his home in Torrey, Utah on November 3, 2016. He was born August 10, 1953, in Richfield, Utah, to Charles Cleland and Madonna Peterson Hunt. He graduated from Wayne High School, Class of 1971.

In 1974 Monty married Jolynn Taylor in Fremont, Utah, together they had two children and later divorced, in 1984 he married Glennis Williams in Salt Lake City where he helped raise her 5 children along with his own, they later divorced, he then met and committed the remainder of his life to Beva Nielsen.

Monty was raised in Torrey and worked with his family to operate the Hunt Sawmill and Lumber Co., Hunt Apple Orchard, and a ranch in Caineville, Utah. As an adult, Monty worked in the uranium mines in southeastern Utah while living in Torrey and Hanksville; Monty then moved to Salt Lake City where he worked as a crusher operator and a short haul truck driver for the next 30 years until he moved back to Torrey to help care for his aging mother. He enjoyed working on small and large engines and tinkering to get the most life out of any appliance or electronic item. He also loved helping others during their times of need by sharing his home with many friends and family who needed a place to stay or to get back on their feet.

Monty is survived by his children, Monica Fell of Lehi; Corey (Stacy) Hunt of South Jordan; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Stanley (Sandra) Hunt, Loa; Priscilla (Carl) Reichert, Mesa, AZ; Deanna (Jerry) LeFevre, Panguitch; Donita (Jeff) Pace, Torrey, and Brenda (Shannon) Davis, Ivins.

Monty was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, C. Gary Hunt.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. in the Torrey LDS ward chapel where friends may call for viewing Saturday morning from 11:00 to 12:30 prior to the services.

Torrence said, “It took me three years, but we finally met the right marketing guy at a cider convention.” She said that the firm, called ‘Brandit’ specializes in marketing for craft beverages. “The one thing that we have told them is we want our brand to be respectful of the fruit growing heritage of our region,” said Torrence.

Torrence said that making great cider requires a blend of flavors that aren’t found in table apples, and apple varieties that contain more bitterness and acidity, similar to grapes that are used for wine. “You don’t eat wine grapes, but they add a lot of flavor to your product. The same is true for cider apples.”

She noted however, that some cider apples are ‘dual purpose’ and their farm has offered annual fresh apple tastings each of the past five years, while the orchard has been getting established. In addition, just a few weeks ago, they offered their first “community juicing day,” where people could bring their apples and take home a fresh, pasteurized product made from their own fruit.

For the community juicing day, another grant—this time from Slow Food Utah— helped Torrence and Marc hire the only mobile juicing unit in the western U.S. The mobile unit consists of a trailer loaded with $150,000 of juicing equipment including a pasteurizer. The operator brought the juicing trailer down from Montana and set it up at the Red Cliff Restaurant parking lot.

“It was just so much fun,” said Torrence. “At least 30 families brought apples. They came by the pickup load and by the trailer. We figure we did 8,000

And that was just the first day. The next day was a smaller affair for home brewers for unpasteurized juice. “We are hearing back amazingly happy home brewer results. They have all promised to bring some back for a tasting,” said Torrence.

Torrence says the twoday juicing event was a real eye-opener on the robust the flavor of local apples. “We got to taste our local juice blends. The ‘terroir of Torrey’ is what we got to taste and it is amazing.”

“It wasn’t bland,” added Robert Marc.

Torrence said that she hopes to continue making the community apple juicing day an annual event, eventually using their own equipment. Upon the suggestion that this is a great service as many locals from Torrey down to Tropic have more apples than they know what to do with, Torrence exclaims, “But I do!”

And, continually enthused about the prospect of learning about local heritage apple varieties, she added, “We suspect that there are some fruit discoveries to be made in some of these pioneer orchards.”

She noted, as one example, there is an apple called the ‘Kanab’ that is known to be local to that town. Suggesting that we could learn about and identify and name, or re-name, heritage varietals, Torrence stated, “There are people who are known as ‘extreme apple identifiers,’ people

that really know their stuff about apples. And also there is genetic testing.” She explained that a lot of cultivars are developed from a ‘sport’ which is just one branch of an apple tree where the fruit develops differently. A knowledgeable person can walk through the orchard and note this difference and a new apple variety can be cultivated from that variant.

Stray Arrow Ranch has about a year to complete their cider marketing feasibility study. “Most artisanal cider that is made in the United States gets sold within 100 miles of its production point because the demand is so high,” said Torrence.

“For example, we’ll hardly ever see beverages from eastern cideries out west. It is taking its place as the third beverage for fine dining. It’s great as a late-summer or fall beverage, and it goes great with turkey.”

After the marketing study is completed, Torrence says they will spring into action on the capital project for their production system.

“Phase two is matching money for operating expenses for up to a quarter million dollars,” said Torrence.

“Which we can use to buy things like bottles, labels, and paid labor.”

Torrence noted that the other Utah-based producer to received USDA Value Added Grant funding, Cornaby’s Farm in Salem, Utah, received a “phase two” type of grant. USDA provided $250,000 to support the market introduction

of a new product, developed from their farm-grown local raspberries.

USDA’s October 27 Value Added Producer Grant announcement in Utah was part of a larger, nationwide announcement of 325 projects awarded to rural agricultural producers and small business owners throughout the country.

VAPG grants can be used to develop new product lines from raw agricultural products or promote additional uses for established products. The USDA says that grants awarded through this program are a key element of USDA’s Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative, which coordinates the Department’s work on local and regional food systems—a key component of rural economic development.

USDA Rural Development State Director Dave Conine said, “These business owners are utilizing one of the most sought-after funding sources offered by USDA. Value-Added Producer Grants allow agricultural producers and small businesses some flexibility to innovate with less risk which advances their potential.”

Torrence added, “Federal grants are some of the toughest applications to fill out, but the USDA offices in Utah were extremely helpful, in ways we’ve never seen a federal agency help.

They were very supportive.”

As you prepare for a new year at college, managing your money may be the last thing on your mind. But, college is the perfect time to instill strong and healthy financial habits, such as budgeting and living within your means.

By starting on the right foot with good saving and spending habits, you'll have a good chance to set yourself up for a life of financial success.

Here are some ideas students – with the help of parents, relatives and the school's financial aid office – can consider while taking the leap into living away from home.

Create a financial plan early on. Create a general financial plan for your college years right away, and a more detailed budget for the upcoming semester. You can start with estimated costs for tuition, fees, room and board from your school's financial aid office and fill in the actual numbers once you know them.

Even with financial aid, most college students need to be frugal as they balance major expenses and a limited income from work or parental support.

While you may need to take out student loans, the better you manage your personal and educational expenses the less you'll have to borrow now, and repay later.

Adjust your budget as you go. Your focus should be school, but you can also take time to track your money and stick to your budget. A budget can be a tool and a learning opportunity, and particularly during your first few semesters, you'll likely have to make adjustments as you learn to balance wants and needs. Try to stick with it and remember it's okay to make

changes (and an occasional mistake) as you go.

Parents can discuss how they manage their personal or family budget and offer suggestions for cutting expenses or finding work. College students may face many financial firsts, such as signing a rental agreement, purchasing insurance or applying for a loan, and parents can share their experiences and advice.

Make your budget add up.

Learning how to roll with the punches and live within your means are timeless skills. You'll have to balance academic obligations with a part- or full-time job to increase your income.

But, there are often flexible oncampus jobs you can qualify for if you have a work-study grant as part of your financial aid package.

When it comes to saving, there are all sorts of ways to cut costs on necessities and indulgences. Consider the following three tactics almost any college student can use to spend less money.

Use student discounts.

Dozens of stores offer students discounts, validated with an official ID, or a .edu email address, and you may be able to save 10 to 20 percent off your purchase.

Ask store employees or check online before to see if a store offers a student discount before checking out.

Save on textbooks. Look for alternatives to buying new textbooks, such as renting textbooks, buying used books, purchasing or renting e-textbooks or using the library's reference copies.

Mobilize your savings. If saving money is just one more thing you don't want to think about, you can save your spare

cash via your smartphone.

Thinking about buying a car next summer or saving money for spring break? There are mobile apps that will calculate how much money you can afford to save at a given moment – whether that's $20 or ten cents – and will save it for you. You could also set up an automatic weekly or monthly transfer to your savings account through your bank.

Chances are you won't miss the money, and you won't spend it if you don't see it in your checking account.

Make a practice of saving for the future. You'll want to figure out the best way to use your savings. If you've taken out student loans, you could allocate some of the money to early loan payments.

Private and unsubsidized federal student loans accrue interest while you're in school.

Making a payment can help you avoid increasing your debt load and save you money on interest. Plus, unlike with some other types of loans, there's no penalty for making early student loan payments.

Bottom line. College is an ideal time to instill healthy financial habits. Ask your parents or other relatives for guidance, discuss student loans and budgeting with your college's financial aid office, learn a new skill online or attend a local personal finance workshop or seminar.

While you set off on a series of firsts, take advantage of these resources to learn how to manage, save and wisely spend your money.
