Welcome to the 2014 Boulé in Washington, DC where 24th International Grand President it all began on Friday, January 16, 1920, at Howard University by five beautiful, undergraduate young women. Congratulations to Soror Patricia E. Jones, National Graduate Member-at-Large, on the production of The Graduate Gathering – The Boulé Edition. Great idea! This is my first Boulé as the International Grand Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and I am excited because I want the best for the sisterhood. We need to accomplish all of the business of Zeta, make important decisions about OUR house, elect new officers, remember our deceased sorors, rededicate to our sisterhood, recognize our Zeta Doves, award our sorors, chapters, regions and states for their outstanding accomplishments, attend great workshops, and have some fun. As we move through our 94th year of service know that we are only great when we work together. Always remember "It's about ZETA"! Let us remain energized, excited and committed to what we can offer and do for this great sisterhood and the world. Continue serving your communities and promoting finer womanhood as you help others excel through mind, body and spirit. Sorors, let us unite in one spirit for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated as we keep Building on the Principles of Zeta While Blazing New Paths.

Patricia E. Jones ~ Graduate Member at Large I feel am so blessed to be able to deliver this very informative ―Graduate Gathering Newsletter‖ The Boule’ Edition. It is my complete confidences that you will find information that will not only enlighten you but have you saying I did not know that! As I traveled to all 8 regions and 18 state meetings, as your national Graduate Member at Large, I found there were many concerns and answered many of questions. I informed over 1,500 sorors of the duties of this office; that it is to be the voice of the graduate members and I am to be hands on and available. I am currently working with the National Director of Programs emphasizing the American Cancer Society. It is near and dear to my heart because I am a two year survivor of breast cancer. I like to thank the Eastern Region especially for supplying me with a nurse during their conference, which help to energize me and allowed me to keep on - keeping on! I have also penned a Transitional Ceremony to help welcome the undergraduates to the graduate chapters. I have had several conversations with the national undergraduate officers and other undergraduates and graduate sorors and appreciate their input. With that thought in mind, I have submitted for this Boule’ an amendment to the definition of the office of National Graduate Member at Large. She should be responsible for the Members at Large to ensure they get all information of the workings of the sorority. Also, to let them know they have a contact person and they are not alone as Graduate Members at Large. As your representative I truly believe in face time, and I am here for you now and throughout the Boule’. I would like to say thank you to all the contributors of this inaugural Graduate Gathering Newsletter “Boule’ Edition” and the upcoming “ZOL Edition” newsletter, which will inform and educate you on how to be a great leader through our ZOL programs. Between this publications and the next one, look out for periodical news blast via electronic means. In closing, look for me at the 2014 Boule’ in Washington D.C. and let me know that you have read the Graduate Gathering Newsletter and I will have a nice gift for you. Welcome and enjoy the Boule’, if you need me call on me!

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Celebrates Centennial at 2020 Boule’ Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920 on the campus of Howard University. ...where it all began. The Zetas have a royal blue and white tree decorated beautifully to signify its beginning. ….next to the royal blue and white tree representing Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The two groups represent the only Greek organizations that are constitutionally bound to one another as true sisters and brothers. No other Greek fraternity or sorority can say that. Sigmas and Zetas are the only ones that exist in such a

manner. We are very special in very many ways. We are each other’s keepers and representing all the way. We acknowledge our principles and live by them daily. Zeta’s founders were: Arizonia Cleaver Simmons, Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, Fannie Pettie and Anna Pearl Neal. Zeta’s foundation was built on the following principles: Finer Womanhood, Scholarship, Sisterhood and Service. The Sigma’s foundation was built on the following principles: Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.

When Doves Phi

Zetas Are Finer Women and Don’t Haze Stand up and make a difference. A national coalition has been formed by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the National Action Network to bring awareness to the problem of hazing. The national coalition has developed anti-hazing curriculum training programs as well as support materials. The coalition is asking all fraternities, sororities, civic organizations, academic institutions, politicians, celebrities and concerned citizens to support a full-scale effort to

eliminate hazing culture from society. It will push for federal anti-hazing legislation against violators to ensure consistency in the laws from one state to the next and to stop violators from hurting or killing innocent people. The national coalition will conduct a major media campaign to bring awareness to the problem of hazing and develop anti-hazing curriculum training programs and support materials.

Zetas Developing Partnerships All Over Partnerships make a difference. Zetas stand up and make numbers count. We believe in helping others and believe in our national program Z-HOPE. “Blazing New Paths to Protocol - You Deserve It” Sorors Sheryl A. Collins, Kimberly C. Pope, and Dana M. Moore The National Protocol & Amenities Team Sorors, it has been our pleasure to serve as the National Directors of Protocol and Amenities. We launched the revised protocol manual in August 2013. Since then, we have provided numerous trainings and workshops to many of you throughout the country, assisted with regional and state conferences, regional and state board meetings, fielded questions regarding attire at ceremonies, provided amenities tips, and ensured to the best of our ability that protocol was extended according to Madam Grand’s vision. It is our hope that you will continue implementing protocol and providing various amenities at all times while we continue Building on the Principles of Zeta While Blazing New Paths. We are here to assist you for the Love of Zeta. Below are some Boulé protocol tips:  Prepare accordingly. Make sure you pack the required essentials (e.g. prescriptions, vitamins, pocket-sized first-aid kit/sewing kit, contact lens solution, extra pairs of hosiery) and the appropriate attire for each event (e.g. suits for business sessions, uninterrupted white for necrology/rededication, and After-Five for the Opening Program and Awards Banquet). Be mindful of the airline restrictions for luggage – are you over or under 50 lbs.? 

Wear comfortable shoes. There may be a lot of walking so make certain you are outfitted for the trek. Bring your cute and fabulous heels, but wear your cute and comfortable flats until you arrive at your destination.

Bring your electronic devices and chargers. Technology and informationsharing has evolved tremendously over the past five years. Remain engaged and be ready to take notes at the business sessions and workshops.

Use discretion. Avoid discussing Zeta business in public forums (e.g. elevators, lobbies, restrooms). We want to ensure that Zeta’s reputation exemplifies Finer Womanhood at all times. Remember to tip. When someone helps you, please and thank you may not be enough; money talks! Carry small denominations of money with you so that you don’t have to locate an ATM machine when you reach your destination.

From the Meeting Planner‘s Pen……. Working for Zeta Phi Beta as a meeting planner gives me a sense of joy in that I know I have done and will always do the best for my sorority. I know that most of my sisters don’t understand my role as a meeting planner and whenever they call, text or email I will do my best to help or give them the proper information to solve their problems. The work situation with Zeta is very different from what most meeting planners experience with other organizations. Zeta likes the personal touch and the sisters want to feel and know that you care and will go that extra mile to help. Although Zeta does not offer the resources most meeting planners need to work efficiently, being a part of this sisterhood makes me want to try and do things that seem impossible just for the betterment of Zeta. Some people would say that a true meeting planner is a glutton for punishment simply because they are constantly taking on difficult tasks. The work of meeting and convention planners may be considered either stressful or energizing, but there is no question that it is fast-paced and demanding. Planners oversee multiple operations at one time, face numerous deadlines and orchestrate the activities of several different groups of people. Meeting and convention planners spend the majority of their time in offices, but during meetings, they work on-site at the hotel, convention center or other meeting locations. They travel regularly to attend meetings and to visit prospective meeting sites. The extent of travel depends upon the type of organization for which the planner works.

Mercedes Alexander National Meeting Planner

Work hours can be long and irregular, with planners working 40-70 hours a week in the time leading up to a meeting. During the meetings or conventions, planners may work very long days, starting as early as 5:00 a.m. and working until midnight. Some physical activity is required, including long hours of standing and walking and some lifting and carrying. Planners must have the personality to be able to work with the public and with workers from diverse backgrounds. If any of you are interested in coming into the field of meeting and convention planning I want you to know that there is a great difference in being a wedding/ party planner and the professional field of meeting planning. There is actually a certification (CMP – Certified Meeting Planner) that is required by some corporations to work for them in this field. CMP certification is widely recognized in the industry and helps tremendously in career advancement. Degrees in Hospitality and Hotel Management are now being offered in colleges and universities around the country. If you start out with a degree in hospitality or hotel management your chances of grabbing that dream job of working with a large company having exceptional travel experiences and meeting people in all walks of life can become a reality. Some of the skills needed to be successful in this area include:  The ability to consult with customers to determine objectives and requirements for events.

     

Arrange the availability of audio-visual equipment, transportation, displays and other event needs. Coordinate services for the event, such as accommodation and transportation for attendees, facilities, catering, signage displays special needs requirements and event security. Monitor event activities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and laws, satisfaction of participants and resolution of any problems that arise. Confer with staff and volunteers at event to coordinate details. Conduct post-event evaluations to determine how future events can be improved. Evaluate and select providers of services according to event requirements.

While working with Zeta I have also come up with a list of codes that are not unique to a planner but codes that are a must for a planner working with Zeta.

      

Must show attention to detail. Jobs requires being pleasant with others and show a cooperative attitude. You must be reliable, responsible and always dependable. Job requires integrity – being honest and ethical. Self-Control – you must maintain composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations. Show a willingness to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction. Stress Tolerance – you must be able to accept criticism and deal calmly with high stress situations.

My Journey Through Life

Soror Scarlet H. Black National First Anti-Basileus

ZETA is my ―Core Being‖

My journey in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was really a charge to keep. I do not know anything else but Zeta. Coming through (what I call) the Zeta system, prepared me for much of who I am today in life. Zeta is in my ―core being.‖ I was a Zeta youth, debutante, scholarship recipient, and a legacy. Along the journey, I listened, studied the sorority’s structure, policies, etc., and watched phenomenal leaders in our phenomenal sorority execute the duties they were either assigned, appointed, or elected to do. To be perceived as a leader, you have to align yourself with practicing leaders. To

do this, I had to be present in the moment, participate, and attend meetings, events, activities, conferences. Often, it was not easy with school, home, church, family and all of the other things that constitute one’s life. However, I made a commitment and I was always taught that when a commitment is made you follow through……”for to whom much is given, much is required.” I also watched my Zeta mother, her Zeta friends, and women across the spectrum of our sorority. I wanted to emulate how they carried themselves as women with dignity, grace, and class. These are not easy attributes

to achieve and the journey is always a work in progress. However, the image of a Zeta woman interacting in the world with dignity, grace, and class is a beautiful view to behold and is something that stayed with me. There is not a day that goes by where I forget what I have learned by being a member and consequently a leader in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. As my mother always told me, “No one owes you anything and you are not entitled. Folks want to see hard work and sweat equity. People are not fooled. Honey, with anything that you do, always remember, let the work count.”

Without hard work, you are just there in name only and folks know the difference.

As a Certified Chaplain, Pastoral Psychologist and Counselor, I am humbled and honored to serve this great Sorority as National Chaplain. National E- Cards, Prayer Cards and Mailed Cards would be sent using the same process. of the ceremony. This tribute is traditionally part of a funeral or memorial service. During the funeral, a Triumphant Sorors’ Resolution and a Eulogy may both be given; the difference between the two is presentation and formality. The Sorors’ Eulogy is a freely written speech with no format and a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc Triumphant Sorors’ Memorial Resolution is formal and written to the specification of the sorority; showing deep appreciation, gratitude and respect for what the deceased Soror contributed to the sorority and the Sorors’ family in a specific format of title, introductions, whereas statements, and therefore let it be resolved statements. It follows a specific format and becomes part of the

Chapter’s official records and is given to the Sorors’ families. Your resolution tribute will create a lasting memory for the surviving family members, sorority sisters and friends. Two of my favourite quotes that speak volumes through life’s grief’s and transitioning periods are: Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift. Voice of the Mississippi State

Vanessa R. Banks

Our “Zeta Light” must shine at all times

You must meet people where they are and lead them to where they need to be.

I am honored to serve as the Mississippi State Director. Thank you International Grand Basileus Wright for entrusting me with the stewardship of this great state. “Team Mississippi” consists of over 950 financially active sorors, 497 youth, and 77 Amicae! As State Director, I strive daily to serve with integrity, to lead by example, to provide exceptional services, and to be accessible to the membership. Each chapter in the state is equally important. I travel across the state to support events, meet with chapters, and to resolve conflicts, as necessary. Throughout the year, we conduct numerous trainings, service projects, summits and workshops all over the state to ensure that every single member of our sorority and our auxiliaries has an opportunity to obtain knowledge to successfully complete the work and business of Zeta. These widespread events are important, primarily because they allow us to accommodate everyone, including members who are unable to travel long distances to conferences, such as Boulé. I do, however, promote the importance of our representation at our Grand Boulé, because we know that learning, enlightenment, business and networking extends beyond the State of Mississippi. The “Boulé Experience” allows attendees to bring back information to everyone in our local chapters from a national viewpoint, as we all endeavor to move forward on one accord, as a whole.

allows the opportunity to exchange questions, clarify misinterpretations and ensure accurate completion of what is requested, in a timely manner. A respectable portion of our financial membership of “Team Mississippi” consists of our undergraduate sisters. Our undergraduates are a vital part of our sisterhood, and I firmly believe in treating them as such. I treat each one of our undergraduate basilei as the “CEO” of her chapter, and I constantly emphasize to all undergraduate sorors the fact that they come into the sorority with full rights and privileges, as any other member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. This sense of responsibility gives them motivation to work hard within their chapters and to be frontrunners on their respective college campuses. This also provides them with further inspiration to transfer to graduate chapters upon graduating.

I live by the principle that you must meet people where they are and lead them to where they need to be. When I meet with the sorors, I listen with an open mind. I further ask them, “what can I do to better serve you?” We work with a team concept because together we can make the Zeta difference. In Mississippi, we are striving daily to make this “Zeta Difference”. As State Director, I challenge the state, as I challenge myself, to be dedicated to the tasks at hand, to work efficiently to uphold and exemplify the legacy of the sorority and to let Another key to successful leadership in a state our “Zeta Light” shine, in all that we do, as we with a large membership is effective commu- continue “Building on the Principles of Zeta While Blazing New Paths”, for the love of nication. MAJ Natasha Sunday Clarke – National Military Attaché, is a driving force in the increased level of awareness and support Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has dedicated to our Service Members, military spouses and our Department of Defense personnel. As a military Zeta, she recognized there was a need for the voice of our militaryrelated Sorors to be heard. Her journey as an active duty United States Army Major has allowed her to serve all over the world. While in Germany she worked with other organizations to provide clothing for the less fortunate women and children. She helped build an all-girl school in Iraq located right outside of Mosul. Her second tour to Iraq gave her an opportunity to deliver food, water, and soccer balls to the children of Iraq near Al Taji Airbase. Partnership Makes a Difference ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INC. HISTORICAL FACT

The past two years have been wonderful for community engagement and volunteerism. We have experienced record-setting accomplishments and developed new relationships along the way. We celebrated 40 years of friendship with the March of Dimes. Prematurity Awareness, March for Babies and Stork’s Nest have grown and continue to exceed our expectations. In 2012 we reached more than 80,000 people with our prematurity awareness efforts and in 2013, we reached more than 100,000 people. In 2013 we won the Alpha/Zeta challenge by raising more than $300,000.00 during our March for Babies campaign. We were number two overall for service organizations. Let’s win again! We launched a national registry for Stork’s Nest to locate all Nests and update our records with contact information and details on services rendered at each Nest. The workshop which will be held at Boulé, “Stork’s Nest Reloaded” will introduce the new implementation guide, educational curriculum and support materials. We currently have 110 active Nests in the country. Elder Care has been an awesome initiative for Zeta Phi Beta. Hardly any African American organizations are focusing on the importance of financial management, estate planning and retirement planning. African Americans are the least prepared and are more likely to end up in nursing homes which provide inferior care according to a report by Prudential. Zetas four-option program provides various opportunities for chapters to get involved. Our initiative has led to partnerships with National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, The Estate and Long Term Care Planning, Inc., National Family Caregiver Alliance and most recently AARP.

We were recognized in March by the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation for being one of the few African American based organizations to have an initiative of awareness and education on triple negative breast cancer. In 2013 we developed a partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude provides cancer treatment to children free of charge. They also provide lodging and living expenses for the family while the child is seeking medical care at the hospital. Forty percent of their patients are African American. We are partnering in two areas with St. Jude: Sunday of Hope in the months of April and May and Girlz Night In which will be held in the fall of 2014 for the collegiates and Amicae. Reports are still coming in from churches for Sunday of Hope. Sorors registered more than 100 churches! Current amount raised is about $7,000.00! By popular demand, we are providing more options for volunteering with the American Cancer Society. Soror Pat Jones and I met with the American Cancer Society in June to discuss options for chapters. The American Cancer Society will be a part of the “Do You Get the Points” workshop at Boulé where they will discuss new options to support the fight against cancer. Sorors you have done a fantastic job over the past two years with supporting communities and bringing awareness to those with limited access. Zetas Have heart.

2013 “Blazing New Paths”

Dr. Nell Ingram ZOL Chairperson

JULY 7-12 2015 WASHINGTON, DC

Never in the history of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated has it experienced the attendance at a leadership conference that we had in Indianapolis, Indiana in July 2013. International Grand Basileus Mary Wright, members of the ZOL Steering Committees, and sorors of the Great Lakes Region welcomed over 1100 Zetas and Amicae. If you missed ZOL 2013, you missed not only an excellent opportunity to network but an informative program. The first day kicked off with an inspirational speech by Soror Dr. Wendy Coleman, South Central Region. Dr. Coleman’s speech had sorors on their feet! Attendees were exposed to leadership topics such as risk management, legal and financial matters, image, introduction to the new style guide, the leadership story, introduction to the new database. Each soror had completed the DiSC behavior assessment as a pre-conference activity. Each soror received their own personal profile, compliments of Past Grand Basileus Dr. Jylla Tearte. A review of the results was shared by Soror Deborah Chima, a certified DiSC consultant. Sorors attending also became the first sorors trained on the new Membership Intake Process by First Anti-Basileus Scarlet Black. The conference started with an inspirational speech and ended with a dynamic and inspirational “Challenge” given by our International Grand Basileus.

The ZOL Steering Committee implemented its certification phase after Boule. Sorors seeking certification completed a leadership portfolio and attended once a month webinars (total of six). The webinar selections consisted of such topics as: The Well-Balanced Leader, Youth Advisor Update, Legal Aspects of Leadership,

and Officer Transitions. Starting p ad Retaining an Amicae Auxiliary, Undergraduate Advisor Update, MIP Revisited, Starting a NonProfit, Basic Grant Writing, Risk Management, Tips on Legal Contracts, Protocol, Brand Zeta, Leadership in the Community, and Public Relations. Strategic Planning …...All About the Business Upon my acceptance of this position, its final definition was still evolving. However, I was given the latitude by our International Grand Basileus, to create and develop a business model which would identify the issues/items the position should address, and how I would interact with my business partners/team members. It was crafted in a manner which allows me to use my managerial skills to enhance team dynamics and to create viable strategies and techniques for advancing the goals of the International Grand Basileus for our organization. Over the years, I have found that when taking on any appointed or elected position, one needs to commit to devote the time necessary to be effective in one’s duties, to have the patience to persevere, to appreciate the importance of being flexible, and to be tolerant toward others who may work at a slower pace than one is accustomed to, but who are sincere about their contributions. But most importantly, I found that one has to love what one does, and be dedicated to the cause, which is to be that cog in the wheel, always focused on perfecting Zeta’s image, and striving for excellence in all we do. As National Director of Strategic Planning, I have been given a great opportunity to do what I love to do: to work for the organization that I love and to assist in advancing its goals, visibility, and viability. Below is a brief overview of the initiatives/ proposals, projects, etc. to which I have lent my expertise to further the cause of Zeta for the past two years: Collaborated in the Development of the following initiatives:  National Military Advisory Board  National Military Appreciation Week featuring Operation HomeFront  National Media Kit  Tele-Town Hall meetings  Developed internal procedures for the documentation of requests for repair and maintenance interventions for our Water Well Maintenance Program in Ghana.  Creation of several social media platforms to expand our social media reach across the country: ( e.g.; Pinterest, Instagram, Zeta You Tube Channel and Linkedln)  Creation of position descriptions/responsibilities for National appointees (except Regional and State Directors)  Newly created Life member newsletter – ―Zeta Life Line‖ Collaborated on the following Proposals:  Opening life membership in 2013  Life/Golden/Diamond member incentives  Restructuring of the auxiliary groups  Special Commemorative Centennial Level Served as Project Manager on the following initiatives:  PSA interview with Honorary Member, Rear Admiral Evelyn Fields (Ret.)  Boule 2014 Image Workshop – ‗How to be Even Finer Than You are Today‖  ―One Zeta-One Image‖ Initiative Upon reflection, I have come to appreciate the intrinsic value in lending oneself unselfishly for the advancement of the organization. This has been one of the benefits of my current position as Director of National Strategic Planning. Whether it has been working behind the scene, which describes much of my interventions, or visibly leading a project, there has been much gratification in seeing the end results of my efforts and its positive impact on the organization. It is my sincere hope that I have been able to make a difference in these last two years in the office of the Director of Strategic Planning for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Therefore I will continue to devote my energies toward keeping the light of Zeta shining bright through strategic planning and collaborative work within our organization.

National Director of Life Member During the past two years, under the leadership of our International Grand Basileus, Mary Breaux Wright, and with the help of the unique Michele Whitted, Co-Life Member Chair and the exceptional Valerie Hollingsworth, National Liaison, life Members have been revitalized, energized, enlightened, and encouraged to move to a higher level of awareness and commitment, as the true lifeline of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. When became a life member in 1975, there was excitement and enthusiasm at the thought of being a life member.
