Times they are a-changing n Times

they are a-changing, as Bob Dylan sang back in the early 1960ies, and so they are here in 2010. Never have so many people been affected at one time by one event as the �world’s largest ash cloud� launched the world’s longest air travel collapse. It went as we know, beyond us and therefore a lot of winners must wait another few months to know whether they have won a gold, silver or bronze in this year’s Best of Scandinavian News Design competition.

Fortunately, the Norwegian organizers are flexible, so it will be possible to arrange a new seminar in late September. We’ll be ready with awards and diplomas, I can assure you.

I can also welcome a lot of new content in this magazine.

Graphic designer Ole Munk, former president for SNDS, by the way, has given the British newspaper The Independent a thought. The paper has been relaunched for the third time in five years, introducing an entire section dedicated to �views� – simply named �Viewspaper�. Sounds like a great idea, but is it?, Ole Munk asks.

We also meet a progressive photojournalist who claims to have an idea

how to create changing times for news dissemination. According to the Danish photojournalist Henrik Kastenskov there is a very pristine and uncultivated media platform, which contains giant development potential. Kastenskov and his collegues in the multimedia company Bombay Flying Club are developing the concept of storytelling in online journalism.

Times are also a-changing for Ă…rhus Stiftstidende. Editor-in-chief Flemming Hvidtfeldt tells us how the newspaper is trying to creatively evolve out of a heavy crisis for the proud newspaper.

Times will also change here in the editor chair. This is my last column as the editor of this magazine, and I hand over the job to Mr. Lars Pryds. He and his wife Lisbeth Tolstrup will further develop the fine magazine concept we have been kicking off during the recent years. I must sadly admit that my new job as a magazine editor in the Scandinavian Client Publishing industry take too much of my time. But I would like to contribute an article every now and then, when there is time.

Therefore, I say hello to SNDS

Magazine’s new editor, and it will definitely not be boring. Lars Pryds is one of Denmark’s most creative Art Directors. Besides having an excellent eye for news-related design, he could just as easily be a journalist. Moreover, he is married to a dazzling writer. Lisbeth Tolstrup is a real capacity, as you can ascertain by looking at her resume. She has been writing professionally for several publishers and a number of Danish media houses for over 30 years.

Opera 2010 arises from the As the Phoenix arose reborn from the ashes, so has Aftenpostens committee for the SNDS seminar in Oslo shaken off the effects of the Icelandic ash cloud and invites you, once again, to «Opera - Storytelling in Multiple Channels» - this time from the 30th of September to the 2nd of October. Will there be changes to the program that was planned for April?

The main theme, Storytelling in Multiple Channels, is just as relevant in September/October as it was in April, so we´re sticking with that.

We do however plan to add a section about various newspapers experiences with iPad and other tablet devices.

Obviously that angle wasn´t relevant in April as the iPad wasn´t available in Scandinavia at that time. In addition we´re working towards a session on redesign and editorial change specifically aimed at smaller newspapers. Feedback leads us to expect a lot of interest for that.

What about the speakers? Any changes there?

At the moment it appears that all of the original speakers will

be with us in Spetember. And we´re working towards a couple of exciting additions. All the latest information about both speakers and other aspects of the seminar will be published, as it becomes available, on the seminar homepage, http://lisa.aftenposten. no/snds.

How did it feel to have to postpone the last event just two days before it should have kicked off?

That was no fun, obviously, but there was little choice when half the planets planes were firmly stuck on the ground.

All that´s behind us now and we´re concentrating on making the new arrangement as exciting as possible for, hopefully, an even larger number of participants.

Were there many complaints from those who´d been looking forward to the original event?

Not at all. Though many were dissapointed by the late postponement participants and speakers alike have been thoroughly understanding and very positive about the new arrangement.

The awards have also been postponed and will be a part of the new seminar. Who has won what is still a well guarded secret.

Why have you called the seminar «Opera»?

Several reasons. For one thing were proud of the new Opera House in Oslo. It´s a beautiful building with an interesting and inspiring story behind the design ( a story which will be told at the seminar). Secondly, the official seminar hotel is called Hotel Opera. Last but not least, the word opera is Italian for work and opera is perhaps the most multifarious artform within music. Producing an opera has much in common with producing a newspaper or news site. Storytelling through the use of a various tools that must function together as a whole.

Who is the seminar primarily aimed at, those from smaller newspapers or those from the large media companies?

Both. No question about that.

It´s important to remember that most newspapers in Scandinavia are small to medium sized organisations, but the problems and challenges we are facing are the same, irrespective of size. The aim of this seminar is that all participants leave us with increased competence and new inspiration - better equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow.

Any advice for those who wish to spend the weekend in Oslo?

We can recommend the Oslo Pass that all participants receive free. The Pass gives you free admission to 33 museums and other attractions, free parking several places in Oslo, discounts at many restaurants as well as free travel on bus, tram and underground.

News from the SNDS board n The SNDS board usually have a day-

long meeting the day before the start of the annual seminar. The planned Oslo meeting was of course cancelled with the postponement of the seminar, so instead the board met in Copenhagen on June 5.

Mandatory points on the agenda are reports from the various responsibilities of the board members, telling what has happened since last meeting.

SND – stable and simple Anders Tapola reported that the SND board seems more stable now, following the tumultous summer of 2009. The SND office has been closed down, and Executive Director Stephen Komives works from his home in Orlando. SND is trying to simplify the board, which (apart from elected members) in the future probably will have seven world directors, one for each continent, with the regional directors referring to them.

Competition: Redesign and online This year’s Scandinavian design competition saw an extraordinairily high number of entries in the Redesign category, as well as the highest number

ever in the online categories. With the arrival of the iPad – and the hype that came with it – the competition simply must have an iPad category next year.

The winners gold, silver and bronze in this year’s competition will be kept as a secret until the award ceremony is held in Oslo Membership worries We have to admit it – the SNDS membership number is dropping. Is it due to the financial crisis? Is it because the number of people working with visuals and design in the news business is falling dramatically? And, more important, what can we do to attract more people to the organization?

With more and more people working with online news rather than print, we should shift even more focus towards the web – especially at the SNDS seminars, which is by far the most efficient way to get new members (as membership is required to participate …).

The board is also looking into a new structure for organizing the seminars.

It’s getting harder and harder to find newspapers or media houses to host the seminars, so instead the board will

invite people to form interest groups to work together with the SNDS board as organizers, and the locations will probably be limited to the four capitals (Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm). More information will follow when the plans are more in place.

Opera 2010 seminar – alive and kicking Unar Vegstein and Jens-Erik Syversen from the organizing group for Opera seminar visited the board meeting to give the status of the preparations.

Luckily, the Norwegian organizers at Aftenposten have had to change almost nothing in the original program, and will present the updated schedule on lisa.aftenposten.no/snds . The registration website will also be up and running again when you read this. Both board and organizers hope that all who signed up for May will also attend in September.

Please turn to page 4-5 if you have any questions about the postponement of this year’s event. We will of course also keep yopu posted by email and on snds.org – as well as on the SNDS Facebook page, which now has 625 members.

Cowboy up! – and ride to Denver

2010 will be a great month for news design. The SND workshop will take place in Denver, Colorado, on the 23-25. That’s precisely one week before the Scandinavian seminar in Oslo, so if you have time to spare, you can get the best of both worlds in little over a week’s time.

The theme for the Denver workshop is ”Cowboy Up” – and the focus of the speaker sessions will be on how the newspaper industry can adapt to ”the challenges of the ever changing canvas of of technology and the immediacy of information”.

The program tracks include Multimedia; Graphic Arts; Excellence; Essentials; and The Mix. The latter will include a presentation by the Australian design consultant Peter Ong, who claims that there is ”Evidence of growth – in print!”. Not in Europe or the US, as we know, but newspapers are pop-

ping up in India, Africa, China, and lot of other countries.

A special event will give you the chance to see Dr. Mario R. Garcia interviewed by seven of his friends who have played a part in his extraordinairy 40 years in the business. Get behindthe-scene accounts of Mario’s most

memorable moments in a casual and entertaining session.

2009 startet arbeidet med prosjekt ”Avis2010” – avisen skulle gjennomgå en total makeover. Ambisjonen var klare – vi skulle bli mer sobre i uttykk og mer vesentlige i innhold. Grunnleggende for omleggingen var at avisen skulle bygges rundt de tre søylene Nytt-Nært-Innsikt.

Slik beskrives disse i vår håndbok: Nytt er fortsatt papiravisens hjerteblod. Nyhetene skal vi hente fra de områdene som er vesentlige og viktige i lesernes daglige liv, fra de områder som direkte eller indirekte påvirker oss og våre omgivelser.

Nært er det som utgjør limet mellom avisen og en stor gruppe av våre lesere. Det gode nærtstoffet handler om mennesker og deres daglige gjøren og laden. Navn, ansikter, merkedager, gledelige hendelser og folkelige arrangementer. Alt dette og mer til hører til i denne søylen.

Innsikt er det som gir leserne mulighet til ikke bare å bli bedre informert,

men også litt klokere. I denne seksjonen tilbyr vi leserne stoff som ofte vil utfordre tanken mer enn følelsene, men der vi alltid legger vekt på å skrive og presentere det på en måte som er forståelig for de fleste.

Med dette som utgangpunkt ble avisen stokket om, journalister flyttet på og designet vasket.

Mye positiv tilbakemelding Etter lanseringen kunne vi gledelig konstatere at den nye avisen ble svært godt mottatt – både av lesere og ”avisproffer”.

Vi har tidligere aldri fått så mye positiv tilbakemelding etter omlegginger.

ginning at the much talked about (and well remembered) SND/S seminar in Iceland back in 19. My studio and I had just completed a redesign of Helsingin Sanomat lead by the sympathetic design director Calle Henning (called the ”Stern Man in Helsinki” back then) when Juha Tolonen from Kaleva – late at night at a bar in Reykjavik – mentioned their plans of a complete retooling of the Oulu based paper Kaleva. Next time we came to talk about it was about eight years later in Copenhagen. (Some redesigns have quite a long runway …)

The Kaleva assignment started as a plain redesign (the previous one conducted some fifteen years ago by Ernst Dernehl) but before we got to the paper we reconstructed the entire website www.kaleva.fi and the design of the mobile services.

In the beginning of last summer, new editor-in-chief Markku Mantila asked me if I could take a look at some related newspapers as well.

The polite suggestion turned out to be a request for a redesign x 4 that could be called nothing less than a tall order. (Mantila was referring to – apart from Kaleva; the broadsheets Ilkka, Pohjalainen, and Keskipohjanmaa).

Four complete redesigns in a total of seven months! I’ve been through some tough time schedules but this must be some sort of record.

And as it turned out, the redesign parts were initially more of ”icing on the cake”. The real purpose was a task of a more complicated nature: to coordinate the editorial resources and allow for a greater sharing of common editorial material. The project was named “West Coast “ and the aim was to use the ”energy and creative forces” of the redesign projects to create conditions for the editorial exchange.

Oulun evankelisluterilaisissa seurakunnissa vaalikone avataan alkusyksystä.

Kanalan mukaan myös poliittiset puolueet ovat ottaneet ajatuksen avoimin kortein mukana olosta vastaan hyvin sen palautteen perusteella, mitä seurakuntavaalien julkisuuskampanjaväki saanut tavattuaan eduskuntapuolueita. Tapaamisissa on kehotettu puolueita olemaan näissä vaaleissa ”tukena niin, että saataisiin mahdollisimman hyviä ehdokkaita”.

Vastaavanlaisia tiedotusiskuja kampanjaväki aikoo tehdä myös herätysliikkeisiin ja järjestöihin.

Oulun seurakunnissa seurakuntavaalien ehdokasasettelu on päässyt hyvään alkuun. Tällä haavaa on perustettu neljä valitsijayhdistystä, ja viides on harkinnassa. Lisäksi ”melko varmana” pidetään sitä, että viime vaaleissa mukana ollut ja ehdokkaitaan läpi saanut Seurakunta ihmistä varten -yhdistys (SIV) on mukana tälläkin kertaa. SIV kertoi vuoden 2006 vaaleissa nojaavansa kokoomuslaisiin arvoihin.

Tulevien vaalien varmistuneista valitsijayhdistyksistä vain Keskusta – kirkko keskelle arkea (KKK) tunnustaa poliittisen taustaryhmänsä avoimesti: sen vaalityön tukijana on Suomen Keskusta.

Aakon mielestä kyse on nimenomaan päättäjien taustan näkyväksi tekemisestä. ”Seurakunnan työssä politiikalla ei ole samanlaista merkitystä kuin kunnallispolitiikassa.” ”Poliittisuudesta on monenlaista ilmaa olemassa. Meidän ryhmämme on kuitenkin irti puoluepolitiikasta”, sanoo Elävä seurakunta – lähellä ihmistä (ESLI) -valitsijayhdistyksen yhteyshenkilö Harry Sandelin.

Sandelinilla itsellään on kokoomustausta, lisäksi ryhmässä on nykyään ainakin vasemmistoliiton, demareiden ja vihreiden edustajia. ”Minkäänlaisia määräyksiä emme puoluetoimistoista ota.

Olemme tässä hommassa vain seurakunnan asialla”, Sandelin vakuuttaa. ”Ryhmässämme saa olla puolue-, herätysliike- tai periaatteessa mikä tahansa yhdistystausta, mutta tärkeintä on sitoutuminen seurakunnan toimintaan”, arvioi Toimivat seurakuntalaiset (TS) -valitsijayhdistyksen Oulujoen seurakunnan yhteyshenkilö Mikko Jämsä. Jämsän mukaan heidän ryhmässään on nykyään jäseniä ”hyvin laajasti eri herätysliikkeistä ehkä Rauhanyhdistystä lukuun ottamatta, samoin monista muista järjestöistä”. ”Ei puoluepolitiikan tarvitsisi näkyä seurakuntatyössä välttämättä lainkaan”, sanoo Kristillisten arvojen puolesta -valitsijayhdistyksen yhteyshenkilö Arto Kivioja. Ryhmässä ei Kiviojan mukaan tunnustetakaan mitään väriä, vaan sen ehdokkaita yhdistää vanhoillislestadiolaisuus.

Seurakuntavaalien ehdokasasettelu on meneillään ja se päättyy 15.9.

Vaalien varsinainen vaalipäivä on 14.11. ja ennakkoäänestysaika on 1.–5.11.

Vaaleissa voivat äänestää Suomen evankelisluterilaisen kirkon jäsenet.

Kirkko antaa ensimmäisen kerran äänioikeuden 16-vuotiaille.

Ehdokkaaksi voivat asettua henkilöt, jotka ovat 18-vuotta täyttäneitä konfirmoituja kirkon jäseniä.

Oulun seurakuntayhtymässä toimitetaan samanaikaisesti kahdet vaalit.

Vaaleilla valitaan jäsenet omien seura-

kuntien seurakuntaneuvostoihin (yhteensä 62 jäsentä) sekä yhteiseen kirkkovaltuustoon (51 jäsentä).

Vuoden 2006 vaaleissa äänestysprosentti oli Oulussa 12,1.

Uusien valtuutettujen keski-ikä oli noin 56 vuotta. Yhteiseen kirkkovaltuustoon pääsi neljä alle 30-vuotiasta, nuorin oli 24-vuotias. Seurakuntaneuvostoihin valittiin neljä alle 30-vuotiasta, heistä nuorin oli 18-vuotias.

Valtuusto päättää muun muassa kirkollisveroprosentista sekä seurakuntien määrärahoista ja rakennushankkeista.

Oulun Höyhtyällä asuva Tiina Parkkinen on kiinnostunut seurakuntavaaliehdokkuudesta. Hän aikoo lähteä ehdokkaaksi nuorten aikuisten valitsijayhdistykseen, jos sellainen perustetaan.

Nuorten asiat ajavat Tiina Parkkisen liikkeelle Riitta Taulavuori Kaleva OULU Tulevien seurakuntavaalien tärkeimpiä teemoja on nuorten äänestäjien herättely.

Näissä vaaleissa äänestämään pääsevät ensimmäisen kerran myös 16-vuotiaat.

Monissa valitsijayhdistyksissä etsitäänkin kiivaasti alle 30-vuotiaita ehdokkaita – heidän kun arvioidaan pystyvän houkuttelemaan varmimmin nuoret äänestäjät vaaliuurnille.

Upoksiin nallen kellossa Kirjojen saaret ja myyttiset meret ovat houkutelleet jo yli 4 600 näyttelykävijää Valvegalleriaan Eeva Kauppinen, teksti Teija Soini, kuvat Kaleva OULU Ei sitä joka päivä sukellakaan meren alle Uppo-Nallen sukelluskellossa!

Kellon ikkunoista näkyy vedenaliseen maailmaan – vähän sellaiseen kuin Maria Peuran romaanissa Vedenaliset.

Kirjailija Sari Vuoriston mukaan meri on mielentila.

Grönlannissa meri on mustikansininen.

Espanjalaiseen uima-altaaseen vangittuna se muuttuu turkoosiksi. ”Saako näitä nappuloita painella?” hihkuvat Uppiksen sukelluskellon sisään sulloutuneet Sykäräisen koulun oppilaat.

Toholampilaiset tulivat keskiviikkona luokkaretkelle Ouluun ja varasivat opastetun kierroksen Saareen-näyttelyyn Valvegalleriassa.

Galleriatilassa on vene veneretkiä varten ja majakka ihastelua silmällä pitäen.

Saareen on elämyksellinen näyttely sekä lapsille että aikuisille. Galleriatilassa tuoksuu ter-

va, ääninauhalta kuuluu veden pulputusta ja lasten kikatusta.

Läikehtivän lammen ympärillä lepää kankaasta tehtyjä kiviä, joihin on ikuistettu sitaatteja kaunokirjallisuudesta. ”Halusimme tehdä monitaiteisen näyttelyn, jossa on taidekasvatussisällöt. Haluamme kertoa näitä tarinoita ja kuulla lapsilta omia. Haluamme myös pidentää kirjojen elinikää. Nostamme esiin kirjoja, jotka sen todellakin ansaitsevat”, kertovat näyttelyn käsikirjoittajat Anna Anttonen ja Kati Inkala.

Tekijät ovat 10 vuotta täyttävän Valveen sanataidekoulun vastaavia opettajia.

Pitkän soutamisen jälkeen verkkoon tarttui 23 kirjaa ja 21 kirjailijaa.

Apuna onkimassa olivat Anne Alarto ja Mervi Vaara Oulun pääkirjaston Lasten ja nuorten kirjastopalvelusta. ”Aluksi meillä oli kenttänä koko maailmankirjallisuus. Ajatus lähti tyyliin Robinson Crusoesta ja seikkailujen saaresta”, Kati Inkala kertoo.

”Melko pian päätettiin, että Pohjoismaat riittää. Syksyllä ajateltiin, että ei vitsi, kotimaisiakin on paljon ja uutuuksiakin on. Että pysytään kotimaassa.

Halusimme nostaa esiin helmiä, jotka on ehkä jääneet vähän unohduksiin, ja kirjoja, jotka ovat aidosti saatavilla esimerkiksi kirjastossa.”

Muutamia klassikoita ei mitenkään voinut ohittaa. ”Oli hyvin vaikea ajatus tehdä tätä niin, että Tove Janssonin Muumipappa ja meri ei olisi ollut mukana. Tai Elina Karjalaisen Uppo-Nalle”, Anna Anttonen tunnustaa. ”Niistä tulikin kehyskirjoja monessa mielessä”, Kati Inkala toteaa.

Näyttelyn suosio on yllättänyt käsikirjoittajat. Saareen on tutustunut jo yli 4 600 näyttelykävijää. Opastettuihin kierroksiin, saariseikkailuihin ja tarinamatkoihin on osallistunut noin 800 eri-ikäistä saarimatkaajaa. ”Mikä meistä on hirveän eheää ja kiehtovaa, ettei näyttelyssä ole mitään ylimääräistä. Valveen Sanataidekoulun Saareen-näyttely on avoinna päivittäin 13.6. saakka. Sitten näyttely lähtee Oulusta kiertomatkalle muualle Suomeen kahdeksi vuodeksi. ”On vähän mietitty, että varattaisiin uusi aika Valvegalleriasta kesälle 2013.”

Yleisöopastus Saareen-näyttelyssä sunnuntaina 30.5. kello 14.30. Kesto 45 minuuttia.

Perhosten polku -tarinamatka Saareen-näyttelyssä noin 3–8-vuotiaille tiistaina 1.6. kello 18 ja torstaina 3.6. kello kello 11.

Saareen-näyttelyyn ja oheisohjelmaan on vapaa pääsy. Ennakkoilmoittautumista ei tarvita.

Oulunsalossa kvartettien juhlaa Kaleva OULU Oulunsalo soi jo 13. kerran heinä-elokuun vaihteessa. Konsertteja kuullaan viiden kunnan alueella yhteensä kymmeen.

Musiikkijuhlien taiteellisena johtajana on jo kolmatta vuotta jousikvartetti Meta4, jossa soittavat viulistit Antti Tikkanen ja Minna Pensola, alttoviulisti Atte Kilpeläinen sekä sellisti Tomas Djupsjöbacka.

Meta4 avaa musiikkijuhlat yhdessä sopraano Anu Komsin kanssa lauantaina 31. heinäkuuta Oulun suomalaisen yhteiskoulun lukion juhlasalissa. Anu Komsia kuullaan myös Hailuodon muistorikkaassa konsertissa kaksoissiskonsa Piia Komsin kanssa.

Festivaalilla vierailee yksi kansainvälisesti aktiivisimmista jousikvarteteista, espanjalainen jousikvartetti Quiroga.

Kvartetti on palkittu muun muassa Bordeaux´n ja Paolo Borcianin kansainvälisissä jousikvartettikilpailuissa sekä Pariisin ja Geneven musiikkikilpailuissa.

Hailuoto-päivänä nuorisoseuran talon lavalle nousee näyttelijätär Kristiina Elstelä yhdessä pianisti Jussi Tuurnan kanssa.

Rajaton-lauluyhtyeen sopraano Virpi Moskari saapuu alttoviulisti Atte Kilpeläisen vieraaksi juhlien päättäjäispäivänä 4. elokuuta. Silloin myös Meta4 esiintyy yhdessä suomalaisen soulin johtotähden Tuomo Prättälän kanssa akustisesti.

Vuoden kuvataiteilija Jaakko Heikkilän näyttely on avoinna Oulunsalon kirjaston aukioloaikoina elokuun ajan.

Although this meant synchronized geometrics and templates and controlled text lengths to a certain extent, each newspaper would maintain their own character and a brand identity that was unique. Four different visual approaches, in other words.

A work group/project team was put together at each paper and I started to ”do my rounds” visiting the teams for intense weekly working sessions. During some periods I lived more or less in Northwestern Finland (and I still do).

These are incredibly exciting, but challenging, projects. And the key is that basically all the work is being done in-house; I lead the visual development and my function is that of a catalyst.

The hands-on-work and the new construction is being done by the redesign teams. That secures the process within each organization and creates strong internal foundations.

The redesigns will be completed this spring, Kaleva has successfully launched already and Ilkka and Pohjalainen is next in line. The new look of Keskipohjanmaa will surface after the summer.

har füet nyt liv i Århus. Århus Stiftstidendes printavis har füet helt nyt design med syv ugentlige tillÌg, og avisens chefredaktør Flemming Hvidtfeldt er godt tilfreds med udviklingen. Vi tror ikke pü, at vi som mediehus, der producerer andet og mere end en avis, kan overleve ved udelukkende at fokusere pü nyheder i traditionel forstand. I dag har vi avisen og et regulÌrt nyhedssite stiften.dk. Men vi har ogsü andre produkter, der kan vÌre med til at udvikle mediehuset, siger Flemming Hvidtfeldt.

Da redaktionen overvejede avisens udvikling, var man meget fokuserede pĂĽ indhold, der var relevant og nyttigt for brugerne. AltsĂĽ ikke traditionelt avisindhold bĂĽret af hĂĽrde nyheder.

ÂťEn del af vores mission i Ă…rhus er at skabe glĂŚde og stolthed over byen.

Her fandt vi, at vi ved at udvikle de syv tillÌg kunne sÌtte mere fokus pü de positive og spÌndende ting, byen har at byde pü. Det er sket samtidigt med, at vi ogsü er konstruktivt kritiske i første del af avisen. Men vi har füet mere fokus pü at skabe glÌde og stolthed i byen i kraft af de nye tillÌg, siger Flemming Hvidtfeldt.

Et tredje ben i mediehuset i Århus er byguiden aoa.dk, der er den største af sin art i Århus. Her er samlet alle begivenheder og shoppingtilbud i byen.

Ved at kombinere aoa.dk med tre af ugens avistillĂŚg fĂĽr avisen skabt en unik sammenhĂŚng mellem printmedie og online cityguide. ÂťVi fĂĽr derfor ogsĂĽ sat fokus pĂĽ omrĂĽder, der er relevante og giver mervĂŚrdi for lĂŚserne af avisen,ÂŤ siger Flemming Hvidtfeldt.

Ændringerne er blevet positivt modtaget, og jeg er ikke i tvivl om, at de nye tillÌg har vÌret med til at bremse det meget store oplagsfald, Århus Stifts­ tidende har vÌret igennem. De seneste münedstal viser, at Århus Stiftstidende i dag taber mindre end det gennemsnitlige tab for danske aviser generelt. Den udvikling tilskriver jeg de nye tillÌg, siger chefredaktøren.

Det, jeg vil skrive lidt om i dag, er en kombination af disse emner, nemlig magtdelingen i samfundet.

Men hvordan skulle den dog forhindre en koncentration af magten, og derved misbrug og korruption - imod selve livet! VĂŚre en redning mod krig?!

I virkeligheden er det egoismen, der er den største synder i verdens ufred. Gud har efter min mening bare vÌret en uskyldig syndebuk.

er printjournalistik. Der er onlinenyheder. Der er webtv. Og så er der ikke mere. Sådan er den gængse opfattelse blandt danske mediehuse, og den er forkert. For der er ganske jomfruelig og uopdyrket medieplatform, som rummer gigantiske udviklingsmuligheder, hvis man spørger folkene bag multime-

De to danske fotojournalister Henrik Kastenskov og Poul Madsen kan sammen med deres canadiske makker, videojournalist Brent Foster, endnu ikke leve af det, de allerhelst vil lave, men i deres audiovisuelle produktionshus Bombay Flying Club gør de et ihærdigt forsøg på at udvikle begrebet storytelling ved at mikse mulighederne i deres multi­mediegryde. ”Vores speciale er storytelling. Her produceres størstedelen af Indiens kul og dækker et areal på ca. 280 kvadratkilometer. Flere end 400.000 menesker i Jharia bor nærmest direkte oven på miner ramt af brandene og lever bogstaveligt talt i fare for at blive opslugt af flammerne, når jorden under deres fødder kollapser. Dr. T.N. Singh fra Center for Eco-Friendly Mining Activities er en af de få, som interesserer for andre måder at grave kul på end de konventionelle metoder, der oprindeligt var med til at starte brandene under jorden.

masse tid på at udvikle nye måder at fortælle historier på til nettet. Vi gør det netop ved at holde fast i klassiske journalistiske genrer. Vi forsøger at specialisere os i narrative flashfortællinger ved at udnytte skærmens/browserens størrelse, og det er der så vidt vi ved, ikke mange selv internationale og anerkendte mediebureauer i udlandet, der gør,” siger Henrik Kastenskov.

Henrik Kastenskov er uddannet pressefotograf på Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten, og for ham er den største udfordring netop mediehusene i Danmark. ”De er godt nok træge. Udfordringen er at overbevise medierne om, at onlinejournalistik er anderledes end printjournalistik. Redaktørerne tænker gammeldags. De har meget svært ved at

sætte sig ud over, at onlinejournalistik siden 1996 bare er en versionering af printudgaven.

I dag mener medierne at der er onlinenyheder, webtv og print. Vi opfatter onlinejournalistik som en selvstændig platform. Med sit eget unikke udtryk.

Der er der et gigantisk udviklingspotentiale et stort frugtbart område.

Onlinejournalistikken er dynamisk, og den er også meget oplevelsesorienteret. Man er nødt til at holde sig for øje, at den dramaturgi, der ligger i en webdokumentar, den er nødt til at være meget skarpt skåret, for det er meget let at klikke væk,” siger Kastenskov og fortsætter: ”Vi er først lige ved at prikke lidt i overfladen af udviklingen inden for online journalistikken, fordi den siden

1996 har været betragtet som versioneret print. Det handler om at finde ud af, hvor de forskellige medieplatforme fungerer bedst.” n

iPad first movers Det danske magasin­bureau Datagraf tror på det digitale magasinmarked. Da mulig­ heden opstod, sendte Datagraf fluks to designere til Holland for at lære kunsten at lave digitale magasiner til Apples nye platform iPad. Vi spurgte Datagrafs designchef Lars Hoff-Lund om tankerne bag den digitale satsning.

Q: Hvad lærte de?

A: Workshoppen var baseret på et specialudviklet softwaremodul, og vores designere lærte at anvende dette og i øvrigt at indtænke den særlige form for navigation, som iPad’en lægger op til.

en række ambitiøse kunder, som i samarbejde med os er med til at definere kommunikationen via dette nye medie.

Men andre former for digitale magasiner vil være rettet mod de mange forskellige mobile devices, hvoraf iPad’en er særlig interessant. Den er som skabt til at vise digitale magasiner. Navigationen er elegant og intuitiv, den visuelle oplevelse er i top, og iPad’en indbyder desuden til en lean back-læsning i modsætning til traditionelle computeres noget mere anstrengte lean forwardlæsning. Med to millioner solgte iPads på det første par måneder er der ingen tvivl om, at den bliver en vigtig spiller i markedet, og derfor er iPad’en naturligvis helt central i vores strategi. Flere af verdens førende magasiner som Time og Wired er allerede ude med specialudviklede iPad-magasiner, og dette vil yderligere medvirke til iPad’ens succes.

Q: I hvilket omfang indgår iPaden i Datagrafs designstrategi?

Gennem vores netværk fik vi tilbudt at deltage i en todages workshop med det formål at udvikle eget demo-magasin til iPad’en, og her slog vi til. At workshoppen foregik i Amsterdam var blot en ekstra bonus.

Q: Hvilke forventninger har Datagraf til det digitale magasinmarked?

A: Ud over en eksplosiv stigning i antallet af digitale magasiner er min forventning, at vi vil se en gradvis modning af kommunikationsformen i mediet. Lige nu er det hot alene at kunne bringe video- og lydklip i magasinerne, men ganske hurtigt vil forventningerne og kravene til magasinerne øges. Det er umuligt at sige, hvor vi ender, men magasinformen rummer en række fordele for afsenderen, som især handler om muligheden for at levere en skræddersyet pakke nyheder og artikler, som modtagerne bedre kan absorbere end på et nok så opdateret website. Derfor tror jeg på en fortsat udvikling af det digitale magasinmarked. n

iPad first movers The Danish magazine bureau Datagraf believe in the digital magazine market. When the possibility arose Datagraf sent two designers to Holland to learn the art of creating digital magazines for Apple’s new platform, the iPad. Datagraf design director Lars Hoff-Lund has high expectations: »This format allows us to deliver a package of news and articles, that recipients are better able to absorb than in any other updated website. I really believe in the continued development of the digital magazine market,« he says.

Nevertheless, in May 2010, SND Italy was born.

marble columns in an ancient building not too far from Piazza Duomo in Milan: the Sala Bracco, of Napoleonic age, in the Circolo della Stampa was the siege, on May 19, of the first SND seminar ever in Italy. The scenario was fascinating enough to induce the foreign speakers, who came in a bit earlier than the audience, to take pictures all around.

A few minutes later the scene was reversed: students, journalists and designers, sitting in their chairs, were taking pictures to almost every slide the speakers were showing on the big screen: from the interactive info graphics of Steve Duenes (New York Times) to the interaction between info graphics and wonderful pics of Kris Viesselman (National Geographic); from the latest works of Javier Errea to the evolution of The Guardian shown by Mark Porter; until the Scandinavian ray of light of Svenska Dagbladet, a daily that Anna Thurfjell almost never stops to redesign and that is achieving its best result in the last 20 years, talking about sales.

Gaining readers and selling more copies in the days of the global crisis is

quite like a dream for the Italian news industry. And if “old fashioned” can be so fascinating in a building in the centre of Milan or Rome, it doesn’t sound so good when it’s about newspapers.

But all those people taking pictures to the revolutionary pages give hope for a change, and good reason to consider the attempt to establish SND in Italy a good idea.

Revolutionary pages, from an Italian point of view, of course. As Angelo Rinaldi, art director of “La Repubblica”, said in Rome, a foreign eye may find Italian newspapers so incredibly full of articles, headlines, teasers: «We are like a supermarket: our mission is to show all the goods, so a buyer can choose what he wants».

But this may lead to a pure mess of words in the pages: «Italy has a very complicated decision-making way. In newspapers, as in politics, everything new has to pass a series of checks and compromises that make everything slower and more difficult».

Newsrooms without visual journalists «Many newsrooms do not have an art director, have never seen a photo editor and have never tried to establish a staff for doing info graphics on their own,» added Alberto Valeri, the Milan-based newspaper designer who is behind the organization of the SND Italian seminar. So while the rest of the world runs at an academic level, Italians look like they are still sitting at the small benches of a primary school.

And, talking about education, not a single minute on visual journalism is spent in the Italian schools for the future reporters, as if learning to find

news and write them down is more than enough. Weirdly, Alberto Valeri is probably the only one teacher of newspaper design in an Italian university. But it’s a school of arts, not one supposed to prepare journalists.

The Italian SND tree Even in this hostile environment, someone still believes that showing is a very convincing way of telling and that the layout of a page is information itself.

This is the seed from which the tree of SND Italy can start to grow. The aim of the organizers was to involve as many people as we could, sending invitations to journalists, designers, students, also doubling the effort to bring the same seminar first in Milan (on May 19) and then to Rome (two days later), to make it easier for people to attend.

It was the very first time, and everybody was uncertain of the result, even if the list of the speakers looked very impressive. With Errea, Viesselman, Porter, Duenes, Thurfjell, the Italian audience could listen to the deputy editors of Gazzetta dello Sport Gianni Valenti (in Milan) and Angelo Rinaldi (in Rome). Then they discovered, with Benjamin Lana and Paco Trujillo, the Spanish experience of Grupo Vocento, that brings together 12 regional dailies, with a central newsroom in Madrid that cures layouts and national news. In the end they enjoyed the Italian revolution of IL, the award winning magazine of “Il Sole 24 Ore”, from the words of editor Walter Mariotti and art director Francesco Franchi.

More than 140 listeners registered in Milan and more than 70 in Rome, thanks to the efforts of the Italian staff, backed from the first minute by Errea and Kris Viesselman.

It’s just a start of course. So much has to be done, to change Italian minds and help old fashioned newspapers to become modern, visual, in a word better for the readers. And to let, at last, the old fashioned style remain only in the buildings. n

How to organise the newsroom?

How do we change the organisation into a less text bound one? Sometimes it’s a bit more of a monologue than a dialogue, but the questions and answers are many and passionate.

Rome, May 21, 2010 When we get off the train on the train station in Rome I am struck by the elderly handsome, sharply dressed Italian men carrying the newspaper under the arm in that stylish Italian way.

Here we face the traces of the economic crisis and how many of the newsrooms impoverished. The news design is debated; The Italian newspapers have not been modernised the same way many other European newspapers have. They are stuck in a complicated straitjacket of traditions.

For a country with a significant history of both design and typography it’s a tough one for the self-esteem.

”But we have our comics” someone says almost in desperation when the issue of why so few newspapers in Italy has info graphics is raised in the discussion.

The speaker team tried to inspire for new innovations. Hopefully, a new wave of new media expression and exciting Italian news design will be born.

Kris Viesselman, the President of SND expressed it in an empathetic way; ”It can be really hard to start a big new innovation at once. Start with something smaller, like showing how to do a news spread better than it was the day before.

By small innovations you’ll achieve the big ones”.

And already there are signs that tell about ‘fantastico’ new Italian news design. IL, a monthly magazine published by 24 ORE is a magical trip into visual journalism in a world-class style.

Good design is simple and smart 125.000 unique visitors since August 2009. Not bad for a one-man specialized design blog. The idea behind the pr*tty sh*tty blog is to show and comment on found examples of graphic design – a bad one and a good one compared. We asked Josh Berta, the guy who runs the blog, a few questions about the difference between pretty and shitty.

Snapshots The examples are found in the streets – not perfectly prepared reproductions. Focus is on type and graphics used in every­day life – the kind we all meet in public places. The texts are short, precise, and often humorous. The most popular post is ”An Open Letter to James Cameron from Papyrus” (January 4, 2010) – an ironic comment to the choice of typography in Cameron’s movie ”Avatar”.

Certainly, especially in the case of my blog, it’s based entirely on my own opinions and taste. Why did you start the Pr*tty Sh*tty blog? »I think like most bloggers, I felt I had a unique voice to share. I saw (and see) a lot of ugly in the world, and my hope is to illustrate (in a fun way) how we can beautify things a bit. It’s also been a form of personal expression – an outlet for my smart assery. The hope is always that people show up and start reading, and hopefully stick around and keep reading. Fortunately, I’ve had some success with that.« designs, but I have yet to do that – I don’t think it’s in the spirit of the blog somehow. And once I got a phone call from someone asking me to take down a “Sh*tty” which featured his business.

I’ve gotten a few “thank you’s” from people who were featured as “Pr*tties” (I guess they watch the web for mentions of their business). Sometimes I get emails from people asking me to feature their own

Where do you find the items/examples – do you search intentionally, or just pick up stuff you stumble across by accident? »A bit of both. New York City is a rich visual landscape, so even on my daily commute I see new things to showcase.

But when that well starts to dry up, I’ll go for a walk and “harvest.” I always try to have my camera on me, so I can catch whatever I might encounter, but even so there’s plenty of stuff I fail to capture.«

dring. Men det er jo “bare” form, først lidt om indholdet. Og her får læserne mange gode råd og forklaringer, som selv garvede AD’ere kan have glæde af at få genopfrisket.

Første afsnit gennemgår “Art direc­ torens værktøjskasse” – og er basale beskrivelser af designprincipper, skitseteknik og typografiske overvejelser. Godt nok er bogen – ifølge pressematerialet – især henvendt til nye talenter i branchen. Men får man overdraget et ansvar som AD’er, har man formentlig allerede modtaget basal skoling på disse områder.

Et sådant afsnit bør ikke optage hele 60 sider – næsten en fjerdedel – af en bog, der er rettet mod et særligt niveau som art direction.

Hvordan og hvorhenne Mere gods er der i bogens sidste tre fjerdedele, hvor vi når ind til kernen af art direction. I “Den kreative proces” beskrives, hvordan en AD’er arbejder

– og i bedste DIY-stil er kapitlet bygget op over fire “projektdokumenter”, der er lige til at kopiere og bruge i en konkret opgave. Her findes også de basale “10 regler for god kommunikation”, der alene er hele bogens pris værd. En folde-ududgave i plakat-format med disse 10 råd – til opslagstavlen – bør inkluderes i kommende oplag af bogen.

Afsnittet “Medier” giver introduktion til de forskellige platforme, der kan art directes på – print-annoncer, tv, radio, web, mobil etc. Områderne dækkes fint, suppleret med relevante eksempler, men udelukkende på reklamebranchens præmisser. Selv om forfatterne i bogens introduktion understreger, at bogen er henvendt til “den konceptuelle art director, der typisk arbejder på et reklamebureau”, savner jeg en behandling af den art direction, der foregår i redaktionelt regi – fx på bogforlag, aviser og magasiner.

Her er AD’eren måske ikke omgærdet af helt så megen glamour og smartness som i den kommercielle del af branchen, men spiller dog en vigtig rolle i tilblivelsen af velfungerende kommunikation. Også dette område vil være attraktivt for nye AD-talenter.

I det afsluttende opsamlingsafsnit “På bureauet” findes bl.a. en opremsning af de stillingsbetegnelser, man kan møde på et reklamebureau. Nu findes der nok lige så mange kombinationer heraf som der findes bureauer, og hvad fx beskrivelsen af en piccolines arbejds­opgaver laver i en bog som denne, forstår jeg simpelthen ikke. Til gengæld er de to gange seks “Tips til kundepræsentation” og “Tips til daglig” samt “10 gode råd til mappen” (henvendt til dig, der søger job) uvurderlige. De sidste seks sider med “Kreativ parlør” er en fin samling forklaringer på begreber og udtryk, som bruges i det daglige arbejde.

Tilbage til formen Som antydet har denne bog tydeligvis har været i hænderne på ivrige grafikere.

Desværre er der så meget grafik, at man mister overblikket over bogens struktur. Her ville en god gang ’old school’ redigering have gjort underværker. De tre forfattere er også bogens AD’ere, men det virker, som om begejstringen er løbet af med dem, så de med djævlens vold og magt har villet illustrere hver eneste sætning og helt unødigt har sat sig for at

A great companion if you ignore the often too powerful illustrations. bryde alle de regler, de selv opstiller. Faktisk sidder man tilbage med en fornemmelse af, at forfatterne kunne have haft stor glæde af at have læst bogen, inden de designede den.

God art direction skal efter denne anmelders mening underbygge og støtte formidlingen af indholdet, ikke virke som en bremse. Men kan man abstrahere fra den megen støj på siderne, er “Grundbog for Art Directors” en fyldt med gode råd til arbejdet med at gøre kommunikation mere effektiv – og smukkere. n

ideas look so great on the drawing board. Like, doesn’t it seem like pure genius to pick one of the most popular journalistic buzzwords of our time — ”viewspaper” – and use it to name an entire section? As the paper’s own newly appointed editor was the original inventor of the term, you can imagine if the temptation has been irresistible. Dividing a publication into ”news” and ”views”, in order to send a clear signal to the reader which is which, is definitely an appealing idea. Unfortunately, the reality of The Independent has proven difficult to fit into editor-in-chief Simon Kelner’s new scheme.

The latest relaunch – ”Indy”s third since 2005 – looks like an emergency operation. A rigid distinction between ”news” and ”views” hardly applies to the media situation of 2010 – and it does not reflect the actual contents of The Independent.

For years, one of ”Indy”s main qualities has been its boldness, daring to take a stand and express an opinion from page 1 and on, and as for that, little seems to have changed. The first section still contains plenty of ”views” – analysis, comments, columns, as well as the Lifestyle pages. Whereas part 2, the ”Viewspaper”, changes after the initial op-ed pages, turning into a more traditional feature section and finishes off with TV and radio lists.

In other words, the way this newspa-

per is divided into two parts seems far from natural.

The quality of both words and visuals continues to be on a high level and the basic layout is a pleasant combination of classical British elegance and creative communicative ideas, but new graphical elements have been added with little sense of the visual totality. The decorative ”hand-written” vignettes appear both contrived and rather amateurishly executed. The design of entry points such as pullout quotes, refers, etc, is obviously not fully thought through, and the ”World Briefing” pages appear unintentionally comical, half the spread being devoted to a simple locator map.

We all felt perfectly safe as kids and it was a good place to grow up actually. We lived about a hundred yards from the Raleigh Factory where we were on munitions during the war. I went to work there in 1942 when I was 14, and stayed for threemonths,thenwent somewhere else [where] they were making plywood parts for invasion barges and Mosquito bombers. All I wanted to do was get in the Air Force and bomb Germany.

That’s all you wanted to do in those days.

You attracted a lot of attention a few years ago by being one of the few authors to support the Iraq War. Given what’s happened since, is it a view you stand by?

Not entirely. But to a certain extent, I do, because I believe that giving the people there a say in their own destiny is a good idea. But they don’t seem to think so. And now it’s very difficult for us to come out of it and leave them on their own. It’s a shame they’re not more educated, and that religion has such a high place in their life. If it didn’t, they’d be alright. But they’ve buggered it up, really. You can’t help some people.

Your fame has had, some might say, a double-edged effect on the city, as every new

local writer is instantly compared to you. How does this make you feel?

It doesn’t make me feel very good, really. Every new writer has their own blueprint, or purpose. Fingerprint, if you like. I suppose it’s a matter of art – if you can stomach that word. I don’t use it lightly. If you’ve got something to say, you’ve got to say it in themostdirectway. There’s this [Nicola] Monaghan woman who wrote The Killing Jar, she’s really very good. She’s got her own private, personal, stamp on writing. If you don’t find that, it’s no good.

Where did you find your voice?

I found mine, well … it took about 10 years, but I did find it eventually. But to go back to your original question, I don’t feel good when they compare me to them or them to me. I don’t feel terrible either. But let them. This is what the media do. You have to fight free of all types of prejudices in life.

A lot of your characters escape the humdrum oftheir lives through petty crime or heavy drinking. Presently, Nottingham has a bad reputation for both, not to mention gun crime. Do you thinkyourstorieshavecontributed to this myth?

I don’t know really. I mean this type of crime you get now is nothing like the kind of crime the people I knew when growing up would ever perpetrate. We wouldn’t dare. I wrote before the druggy era and what they then called the “black crime” – which sounds terrible to hear of now as the drug pushers are both black and white, of course.

Do you sense this changewhen you visit the city?

Speakers’ Corner is a good idea, but it’s a way of keeping the people down. As long as they’ve got a place to spout what they think they won’t go out and blow any buildings up, which is fair enough. We don’t want that anyway.

What do you think Arthur Seaton would say?

Fucking hell, and God, he might say that as well!

(Laughter) It would definitely be off the cuff that’s for sure. I wrote a novel called Birthday which I think probably gives a good indication of what Arthur Seaton would say today because it’s about his present life and how he went on from Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

And what would you talk about?

Oh, I don’t know, I’d have to think about that a little more. I couldn’t just say it off the cuff. I would waffle on I suppose about non-smoking, non-drinking, non-fucking, non-hunting, nonthis and that and the way the puritanical system was trying to beat one down.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning issuch acult novel because it’s about fighting against the system. What can people do to stop the bastards grinding them down?

You can’t do anything. You walk around and you’ve got cameras looking at you. Take a piss in the corner and they take a picture.

In the book Arthur is bedridden for three days, which is difficult for him to deal with as he is always active. Was this based on the 18 months you spent in hospital with TB? No, it wasn’t. It just came out of imagination.

Arthur is bedridden out of self-indulgence. He just couldn’t get over the idea that he’d been pissed about with and beaten up, and wanted to reflect on his life without too much disturbance from the outside world.

In his final interview, with James Walker of arts magazine LeftLion, Alan Sillitoe told of his lifelong rage at ‘the system’ – and why he supported the war in Iraq Alan, let’s talk about your childhood – what was it like growing up in Nottingham?

I lived in Radford, mostly. And it was very good really. It was a jungle. I don’t mean a terrible jungle, but a benign jungle where we knew every twist and turn and double alley.

over the years is that when I come back and call on my two brothers and we all put on our flat caps and go to the pub, I find that however much people seem to change, they retain the accent and slang. There’s a certain core, and even other people like Muslims pick it up, which is good because it helps them integrate. I think this is what I really like about the place; the accent is still there and so people are quite eternal to me.

Peopleare very nice. Charming. You know where you stand with them, at least.

to stay with my brothers I stayed in a hotel right at the top of Hockley, behind the Council House. It was Friday night, and I went out after having a bite to eat and I saw all these lovely girls, queuing up at cashpoints to get money and go to the clubs and get stinking!

Did they try to shoot you? (laughs) They were all very nice. I didn’t stay out till2amtoseewhat the scene was like then, but I enjoyed seeing the beginning and stayed out till midnight. Then I went and got some kip. The girls, the boys, the young men, they were all really polite.

So should we be afraid of the new generation?

I don’t believe that they’re all wicked kids, these young people, and that they should be stopped from drinking, smoking, hunting … whatever they want to do. The administrators would like everyone to be tame and not do anything that they wouldn’t approve of. I don’t know.

When I grew up, up to the age of 18, I, we, were lucky. I had plenty of work and I didn’t have to do anything that I didn’t want to do. All I did was work, which was alright – because after all, that’s what you’re on the Earth for, you know. So I consider myself lucky. I don’t know what young people are meant to do these days when they can’t work but then they don’t start, that’s a fact.

Wedon’t have the same level of want. We can get anything on credit. Nobody seems to go without.

I was brought up not to do that. You didn’t get anything on tick. You either paid or went without.Having seen my father taken off to prison because he

got something on tick that he couldn’t finally afford to pay, I thought, sod that, that’s no good. And Inever did it. I never owed any money. But I emphasise that I was lucky because I could earn it. Not a lot, mind you, but enough to keep me in the clear.

The fact that people can’t earn enough to pay theirmortgage or even put petrol in the car seems to have culminated in a fatalism about Saturday night that you’ve got to get drunker than ever, more so than Arthur Seaton needed to.

There’s a part of me that thinks good; get drunk, get pissed up, why not, what the hell. Then there’s another part of me that thinks no, don’t do it, learn, be careful, hoard your money, work as hard as you can. I’m sort of two people in that respect. But I can’t help admiring people who say, “fuck ’em all, let’s get pissed”.

I suppose this is Arthur Seaton’s dilemma?

True enough. That’s why I was taken to draw him in a realistic way, with sympathy. Because people that you write about, you’ve got to love in a way, otherwise you won’t get the truth.

Attheendof Saturday Night and Sunday Morning Arthur gets engaged and reflects that “we’re all caught one way or another”.

There’s a rite of passage that you go through. I didn’t really need to do it because of various circumstances, but a lot fight their way through then settle down. It’s better to do it and settle down than not do it and settle down in my view.

Freedom for Colin Smith in The Loneliness oftheLongDistance Runner comes from deliberately losing the race. Was this always your intention, or did it become clearer as the book progressed?

Yes, it was my intention from the start to make Colin Smith lose the race. If he had won, he wouldn’t have been half the man he was. He had to lose.

I honestly don’t know. I suppose he’d have a job driving a van somewhere, but I can’t say.

Fifty years on we have the iPod generation.

It would seem everybody wants distracting, rather than freedom to think.

Well, you don’t need these toys. I just have a pen and a typewriter. Mind you, I have the radio as well. But you can live without all these toys.

Inthissense SaturdayNight and Sunday Morning is a more prophetic vision of society than say 1984, which hasn’t, in most respects, come true. Is the need to escape therefore an ageless thing, part of the human condition?

A book like is 1984 is pretty good, but it’s a work of the imagination. It’s right in some ways and not in others, like everything else. But I don’t know whether Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was prophetic. To me I sat under an orange tree in Majorca writing it, thinking this is all right because I’m writing about something I know, and so on. I wasn’t sitting there thinking, “Ah, this is prophetic, mate,” not at all. You write and do the best you can and you wait, if you’re daft enough, for the critics to tell you what you’ve done and what was in your mind, although you don’t think anything of them either.

You just do what you want to do. Do what you have to do, and do what you can do.

Don’t you think it’s ironic that you’re the literary voice of your home town when you left here before you were even published?

I don’t think I’ve left it altogether – I certainly never left it in my spirit. I physically left it not because I disliked it, but because I wanted to see other places in the world.

What do you miss about it?

The thing I notice about Nottingham or have done

Ernest Burton, whose grave the Seaton brothers visit towards the end of AMan of His Time, wastoobusygrafting to put food on the table to think. What can we learn from him?

I think he’s someone to emulate – not in his worst moments, but in his attitude. He lived through a terrible time. People could learn from his stoicism, hard work and so on.

And one lesson, perhaps, readers can learn from Burton, Arthur Seaton and Colin Smith is that status, authority even, is something earned rather than inherited.

I’ve always strongly believed in a meritocracy, where people make their mark through their talent alone. There was a stage in my life where I thought the class system was dying out, and I still hope it does. Some of the greatest people England has ever produced – engineers, scientists, even writers – never went to university.

Punkt!

Det var den tillfällige utlands-stringern i Italien i mitten av 1990-talet som fem minuter före deadline ringde upp hemmaredaktionen, artikulerade så väl som möjligt från sitt nedskrivna manus och för säkerhets skull ropade punkt efter varje avslutad mening: ”Vasadu? sa hemmaredaktion­ kvinnan förvirrat.

Punkt, svarade jag.

Punkt?

PUNKT! Jaja, du behöver inte skrika. Jag fattar.

Tre dagar senare var jag hemma igen. Och upptäckte att det verkligen stod just punkt med bokstäver på ett flertal ställen i texten.” n

Författaren är Anders Mildner, som på Svenska Dagbladets hemsida berättade denna anekdot under rubriken ”Omöjligt hoppa av uppdateringståget”.

Anders Mildner bloggar främst om hur sociala medier skapar en ny kultur.

Det utdöende deadline-begreppet är ett exempel på denna nya kultur.

Mildners tes är att när var och en är sin egen medieproducent gäller det att hela tiden uppdatera vad man gör: ”Precis som att jag inte kunde låta bli att försöka få iväg den där texten från Italien på 90-talet, så KAN vi i dag antagligen inte plötsligt tystna när vi väl har lanserat oss som enpersonsmedier.

Vi svarar upp mot krav som mediet ställer. Vi går med på anställningsvillkoren. Och de som inte pallar trycket slutar helt, snarare än att minska sina flöden.

Den senaste veckan har jag frågat folk om det egentligen går att utan konsekvenser koppla ur och hoppa av uppdateringståget. I stort sett alla har svarat samma sak: Nej.” Mildners slutsats är: ”En värld av uppdateringar är en värld av deadlines. En värld av deadlines är en värld av stress. Och ingen utom oss själva att skrika PUNKT! till.”

Två tämligen enkla slutsatser drar jag av denna historia: 1. Begreppet deadline är numera endast ett begrepp som används för pappersprodukter.

2. Den nya sköna världen där vi alla är våra egna medieproducenter är en minst sagt stressig värld.

Men vad betyder det då?

Kan man verkligen inte sätta punkt?

Blir vi aldrig någonsin färdiga med en historia?

Nej, förmodligen inte. I alla fall inte så länge andra anser att historien har brister, behöver fördjupas eller kompletteras.

Det är ute bland de sociala medierna historierna fortsätter att utvecklas.

Bloggare, Facebookare, Twittrare tar vid och storyn växer konstant. Om det nu är en historia som är värd att utveckla, vill säga.

Var och en är sin egen medieproducent. Det är också lite skrämmande för många i mediebranschen. Vi har inte längre monopol på att sätta agendan, att beskriva verkligheten, att förklara hur saker och ting ligger till.

Och många medieproducenter sliter verkligen för att visa vad de gör. Om det så bara är att berätta vad de äter till frukost. Helst skall det förstås bekräftas av andra också, för att man verkligen skall veta att man åt just ätit frukost.

Det är en stressig tillvaro att ständigt uppdatera sin status på en mängd olika plattformar.

Själv gillar jag förresten deadlines.

Ibland swischar de bara förbi. Men oftast lyckas jag faktiskt fånga dem i precis rätt tid.

Som jag gjorde med den här krönikan till exempel.

Punkt.

Eller inte riktigt punkt ändå.
