can be many things. In the previous issue of SNDS Magazine, we looked at illustration. In this issue we show you a glimpse of a live event – the SNDS Fu2i0n14 conference held in Copenhagen in October – and tell it almost only in pictures. Our photos may not say more than a thousand words, but hopefully they will convey the atmosphere and quality of the conference and encourage you to register next year. A visual innovation at Fu2i0n14 was the introduction of the PechaKucha – a simple presentation format where you show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. Images advance automatically and you talk along to the images.* Nine speakers tried their best at this very strict presentation format – Stig Ørskov, CEO of JP/Politikens Hus, Denmark, held his presentation precisely within the required timeframe of 6 minutes, 40 seconds (20 slides × 20 seconds), and Liv-Jorunn Håker from the Norwegian newspaper Sunn mørsposten also managed to deliver a well-structured PechaKucha entitled “Get over it!” about struggling with web code. Accepting the rules of the format clearly showed what magic a great PechaKucha can produce. Now, this may be a rather formalistic observation, but in principle, no design format should be neglected – be

In the magazine Will PechaKucha be part of the new initiative SNDS Meet-up, launched in this issue (page 16)? It’s actually up to you: SNDS Meet-ups are local selforganized events, where news designers in the Scandinavian countries can socialize, exchange ideas, learn and engage in their local design-community. Kim Bjørn came up with this great idea, and we hope you will support the prohject and start organizing. More info to follow on snds.org. One of the winners in this year’s Best of Scandinavia News Design competition was the Finnish illustrator and graphic designer Anniina Louhivuori. The only winner in the new Portfolio category in the print part of the contest, we were so impressed that we wanted to see more. We’re proud to show all six entries from her award winning port folio plus another seven examples of her great visualizing skills published in Sunnuntaisuomalainen. In next year’s competition, there

will be a few changes to the categories – which ones will be announced online and in a booklet in the beginning of January. The deadline for submitting your work is set to January 30, 2015. Come together, right now Our mother organization SND is running a membership drive campaign right now – asking members what their membership has meant to their life and career. We quote a few of the answers on page 14 – and the reasons for joining or renewing with SND are just as valid as reasons for joining or renewing your SNDS membership. If you want to have the best of both worlds (and who doesn’t?) you even get a discount if you sign up for a double membership at snds.org/member – see you in the club! New board member Speaking of members – we have a new member on the SNDS board, elected at the general assembly in Copenhagen in October. Elisabeth Svendby is Head of the design and user experience team at Amedia Utvikling, Norway, and former chief designer of Dagbladet.no. She has been a member of the digital jury of SNDS Best of Scandinavian News Design competition for several years. She is trained in graphic and web design and programming, from Østfold University College and Universität Bremen, Germany. Elisabeth Svendby replaces Lill Mostad. Welcome on board! Finally, have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Lisbeth Tolstrup & Lars Pryds Editors, SNDS Magazine

it in a presentation, in a printed magazine or in apps as well as other digital products. Users and readers of our publications are very aware – consciously or unconsciously – that any given format has its rules and conventions. Try uploading a 20 MB JPG to your news website and watch the bounce rate of your visitors grow skyhigh, or set body copy in your newspaper at an illegible five point size – it just doesn’t work. Of course you CAN pretend that there are no rules – but then the rule is (!) that you have to be extremely good at inventing new stuff. And that’s a lot harder than communicating within the grid at hand.

SND workshop in DC, April 9–11 SNDDC: The Future of News Design is about looking ahead, with an eye on the skills and inspiration designers of news and information need to navigate in an increasingly complex media landscape.” — SNDS newsletter, 18.11.2014.  The SND annual workshop and seminar 2015 will be in Washington DC. The website is up and running, and

content will be added as the program develops. The workshop has moved from fall to spring – this next annual gathering is set for April 9-11 in 2015 at the Newseum, and the opening reception will be at the National Geographic headquarters. Look at the (design) world around you GTA (Grand Theft Auto, ed.) is a game that is capable of asking critical questions about the nature of the world it describes.” — Dejan Sudjic, in B is for Bauhaus.  Christmas is the time for relaxing and for reading all the stuff which is not necessarily important enough to read during busy working hours. You can resort to crime fiction, romantic novels or erotica, but you could also dive into Dejan Sudjic’s B is for Bau haus, a collection of easy-to-read essays about topics related to design. Sudjic is director of the Design Museum in London, and with this book about “the modern world of fashion, technology, design and art” he wants to

help us understand the world around us. There are many interesting topics you might not usually come across – for instance, I had never dreamed of reading about Grand Theft Auto. But over just seven pages Sudjic looks at the game with a designer’s viewpoint, and then it suddenly gets interesting. A review in the Times recommends the book to the “strange people out there who long to go to Islington dinner parties” because it is supplying “nearly 500 pages of plausibly pretentious aphorisms to say about each [of the] 40 potential Upper Street supper topics”. So, this is one way to use the book during Christmas; read it before you meet the family – and sound smarter. –pryds

2014 WINNER Still from ‘A Short History of the Highrise’ the interactive documentary, 1st prize winner in the WPP Multimedia contest 2014, created by Gerry Flahive. Photo: WPP

 All professional photo- and multimedia journalists worldwide are now invited to participate in the 58th annual photojournalism contest and 5th annual multimedia contest. In the photo contest, two categories, Observed and Staged Portraits, have been merged into one category, Portraits, and Sports has become one single category, as well. And a new category is introduced this year – Long-Term Projects: “We wanted to recognize photographers who commit themselves to longterm projects by creating an entirely new category. Long-Term Projects is for

a body of work on a single theme. The project must contain pictures from at least three different years and will be seen as one single body of work,” says Maarten Koets, World Press Photo’s acting managing director. The Multimedia contest introduces specialist juries judging specialist categories, an idea adopted from the photo contest that has proven itself over the years. These changes have been introduced to improve the judging process, and jury members will only judge entries in their own specialist category. Why member? The Society for News Design is in the middle of a membership drive and is asking some of its members to explain SND’s importance to them or their career. The Society for News Design has been a fixture in my personal and professional life since I started college in 2005. When I attended my first annual workshop, the portfolio critiques I received there not only helped me become a better student of design, but also solidified my desire to pursue a career in journalism. As I earned internships, started accepting jobs and became a member of the board, I started forming friendships that I believe will last a lifetime. I can directly attribute involvement in SND to a college internship and two jobs. The organization has not only helped me grow as a designer, but also as a leader and as a person.

SND has given me the guidance to do a daily check: is this the best I can possibly do? For the worldwide design community, SND has helped to raise the design voice in the newsroom in a time where designers were not taken very seriously by the editors and now designers are essential for a success project.

Being an SND member has had an incredible influence on my career. I’ve made connections with some of the biggest names in the design world. The SND Annual, facilitating at the Creative Competition, and the Annual Workshops have been an amazing source of inspiration. Last but not least, I have made many friends through SND, friendships that will last a lifetime. I should have become a member years sooner.

Information Graphic Artist/ Consultant SND has played a huge role in the development of my career. Ideas, support, and professional friendships. It’s impossible to put a value on that. Many of my biggest influences have come directly from SND presentations, workshops, or just conversations at the bar! It’s the essential support network for people in our business. We need it more today than we ever have. Professional friendships and connections that have lasted through my entire career. And in 2014, I’m still connecting to people through SND.

M Meet fellow news designers on local ground A new initiative is launched by SNDS to make the local news design communities flourish and to strengthen the knowledge, communication and creativity in our news media companies.

 When was the last time you had the chance to connect, socialize, discuss and learn from and with fellow news designers in your local country? We thought so too. That’s why SNDS introduces a new concept, that we think you will like. We call it SNDS Meet-up. SNDS Meet-ups are local self-organized events, where news designers in Finland, Sweden, Norway or Denmark can socialize, exchange ideas, learn and engage in their local design-community. It can be everything from a handful of people to hundreds – it’s up to you. The only requirement is, that you follow some simple guidelines and have to be member of the Society of News Design Scandinavia organization. To support the meet-up of news designers around Scandinavia, SNDS provides a package of downloadable Powerpoint/Keynote templates and a

set of guidelines for arranging a succesfull event. We also plan to provide you with roll-up banners and marketingmaterial if you should need so – however, social media and word of mouth is probably enough. “Hopefully this initiative will make the local news design communities flourish and strengthen the knowledge, communication and creativity in our news media companies. If possible, you could even get the support and maybe sponsorship of your company to arrange such an event – or you could just arrange to meet some collegaues in a coffeeshop” says Kim Bjørn, Head of the Digital Competition Committee at SNDS: “It would be great to see at least one event in each country before we all meet again in October for the big, annual conference in Copenhagen.” If you want to know more about who to contact in your country and have any questions whatsoever, contact us on meet-ups@snds.org 

 The print jury of the Best of Scandinavian News Design 2014 competition were not in doubt when looking at the new, smaller version of Helsingin Sano mat’s monthly magazine, HS Teema. The gold medal in the redesign category was unanimously decided upon, and on the final day of the jury’s work it was agreed to give HS Teema the Best of Show award as well but due to misunderstanding the trophy was not handed out on stage. The redesign was done by Helsin gin Sanomat’s Design Director Sami Valtere. “We wanted to create a magazine

that feels like a book. Weight, paper and format plays a big role in this design”, Valtere says. Here is what the jury had to say about HS Teema: “There are no unnecessary elements – here is only what you need, in perfect execution, right down to the last detail. The colour palette is perfectly balanced and the contrasts between small and large elements give the reader a feeling of holding a big magazine his hands in spite of the small format. Design details and vignettes are lovely in their creativity. The rich details on the cover and the untouched paper sets the tone immediately. And it just gets better and better on the inside pages. The graphics language in the infographics and fact boxes are exemplary

in their execution. The change is, in every respect, a big step away from the old design and the jury found that this is a magazine (or is it a book?) that takes the long-reading experience seriously.”  HS Teema is a Finnish magazine made by editors and photographers from Helsingin Sanomat. The magazine was published for the first time on October 2, 2007 under the name HS Raportti. Created to sense, perceive and report issues or phenomena that are already visible or just bubbling under the surface; to expand your view of the world. Always focused on one theme, which can be Finnish, global, social, scientific or artistic or a combination of any of these. It makes even extensive issues personal and concrete. E www.hs.fi/teema

ALUKSI The first part of the magazine is often based on short interviews with people about the issue’s theme – one page of text and high quality portrait photo.

TYPOGRAPHY Type is used elegantly and precisely – and the characteristic stencil font is heavy enough to serve as placeholders for photos in some cases.

COLOURS TEEMA uses bright colours according to content – here, yellow is the obvious choice for an article about a faded media phenomenon. Each issue has a main colour often found in the cover photo, but any colour is allowed on the inside pages to make each story get its own personality.

ILLUSTRATIONS Long stories are often accompanied by a series of elaborate illustrations – this one by Hans Eiskonen.

“A strong series of broadsheet pages where Anniina Louhivuori exhibits great creativity and versatility and brilliantly helps to strengthen the newspaper’s identity. These are powerful and simple illustrations” * A new category was introduced in this year’s Best of Scandinavian News Design competition – “Portfolio”. In this category, the jury will award a series of works created by a person or a team – not just a single “lucky punch”. Consistant quality across the permitted six pieces per entry was the focus of the jury, who this year found only one entry worthy of an Honourable Mention to Anniina Louhivuori’s pages from the Finnish newspaper Sunnuntaisuomalainen. We found her work so interesting that we asked her to show us some more examples. Here they are – a total of 13 pages from the creative studio of Anniina Louhivuori, with a small introduction to each in her own words.

20 *The headline quotes the jury’s motivation for giving the Honourable Mention.

What is your current job title and work – and what have you previously worked with? I work as a graphic designer in Sunnuntaisuomalainen, that is a joint Sunday section for four regional newspapers in Finland. Earlier I worked as free lancer.

How did you get started doing illustration and newspaper design? I started with newspaper design when I got this job. Before this I didn`t know almost anything about newspapers. That was 15 years ago, I think. Ihave always loved to make illustarations.

What’s your background (training/education)? I have graduated from UIAH University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and my degree is Master of Arts (MA).

Why is illustration important – and what can it do that other storytelling techniques cannot? A strong illustration gets in touch with the reader immediately. A picture effects reader`s mind and feelings in an

eyeblink. We can get a grip of a reader before she has time to decide either to read the story or not. Illustration reaches readers unconsciousness. Do you have a personal favourite among the pages/illustrations shown on these pages? I like them all, but one of my special favourites is the bun woman. I baked her myself. I was very happy when I figured a way to illustrate a story about overweight with a warm and sensual way.

BIG AND SMALL Graphic design, typography and communication have always walked hand-in-hand in Erik Spiekermann’s work. Here, examples of signage for Düsseldorf International Airport and the Nokia corporate typeface.

“He certainly made an impact”

W ally Olins (1940–2014) was one of Erik Spiekermann’s first employers in London. M irko Borsche is one of the most influental German editorial and graphic designers. Quotes from the book.

 ITC Officina, FF Meta, FF Unit – chances are you have used Erik Spiekermann’s modern classic type designs in one or more of your projects. You may even have had the pleasure of navigating a Nokia cell phone, using Spiekermann’s Nokia Sans typeface, or the new typeface for the mobile operating system Firefox OS, Fira Sans. Spiekermannn has had a tremendous influence on the world of typography and type design over the course of his 50 years in the business, but for some the most interesting revelation from this excellent book may be the fact that Spiekermann’s professional activities are much more widespread than just drawing letters. Erik Spiekermann has developed information signage and complex corporate design for companies like Audi, Volkswagen, Heidelberg Printing, and Bosch; he redesigned The

Economist in 2001, nearly doubling the magazine’sweekly readership from 500,000 to nearly a million; and back in 1989, together with his wife Joan Spiekermann, he started FontShop, the first mail-order distributor for digital fonts. And much much more. The book shows us all this, and also a strong glimpse of the person behind the professional typographer, designer and entrepreneur. The book’s author Johannes Erler has known Spiekermann for more than 20 years and this is, perhaps, the reason why the portrait seems to be so complete. “One is not only struck by the sheer abundance of quality work, but also by how intertwined [Spiekermann’s] activities are”, he writes. Therefore, the book’s main section, entitled “Works”, describes Erik Spiekermann’s involvement in seven ‘clusters’: as a typographer, designer, entrepreneur, networker, author, technician, and person. The chronological order makes these fields of work mix throughout the book, but to help the reader navigate,

the clusters are indicated on each of the pages in the section, again to show how Spiekermann’s work spans across so many different areas.

Johannes Erler: Hello I am Erik – Erik Spiekermann: Typographer, Designer, Entrepreneur 22 × 28 cm. Full color, hardcover, 320 pages Gestalten Verlag, Berlin ISBN: 978-3-89955-519-6 Catalog Price: €45.00 / $60.00 / £40.00

“Mr. Jyllands-Posten” has died Lars Pryds pryds@mac.com

Supporting SNDS behind the lines Knud Refsing Andersen was always a great supporter of SNDS – he nearly never missed a conference, acknowledging the importance of staying in touch with colleagues and exchanging ideas. His primary concern was always to find ways to make the best possible newspaper and was never afraid to be the first to try new ways of organizing workflows or testing new editorial technologies, both of which are not always popular but often necessary. Knud also made sure that as many as possible of his staff enjoyed SNDS membership – for years, JyllandsPosten has ranked as having the most SNDS members for a single company – and still does. Knud’s support usually came quietly and discreetly from behind the lines, but he also served as a highly competent member of the jury of the Best of Scandinavian News Design competition in 2002 and 2004. For many years until 2013 Knud was SNDS’ internal accountant, elected by the General Assembly. Knud Refsing Andersen was 66 years old when he died on Friday, December 5th. He will be missed, for his wit, his enthusiasm and professionalism. And for just being Knud. 

The “Works” section is where you get to know Erik Spiekermann through his work, with many illustrations and short testimonials by famous friends and colleagues like Wally Olins, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister and Erik van Blokland. The “List of typefaces” section is just that – a list of the typefaces Spiekermann has designed or digitized, with a small introduction to each in his own words. “Colleagues”, a small last chapter in the book, gives credit to the many people involved in collaborative works with Spiekermann. A visually appealing and educational book, well-researched and wellwritten. The admiration for a great design curriculum and the profound respect for Erik Spiekermann as a person is present on all the pages. This book is a definite must-have if you’re a type designer and a perfect addition to the library of anybody the least bit interested in how design evolves and designers work. 

 Though twenty years ago today, I clearly remember his firm, kind question: “Tell me – why I should hire you?” Knud Refsing Andersen looked at me with his always curious and agile eyes, trying to figure out if I was really worth taking on for Jyllands-Posten as an infographic designer and temporary stand-in for a member of his staff, who was due for maternity leave. I held on to my cup of lukewarm newsroom coffee, and contrary to the question I simply don’t remember what answer I came up with. But a contract was signed, and the next ten years of my career I was in the service of Jyllands-Posten. Not that many years, compared to Knud’s 32 years at the newspaper, first as a sub-editor and journalist, but soon settling in as chief-sub-editor and senior editorial director. “Editors-in-chief come and go at Jyllands-Posten; but Knud got things running smoothly,” Jyllands-Posten’s current editor-in-chief Jørn Mikkelsen says: “Knud’s profound professionalism was of the classic kind. When the rest of us took off a little too much, Knud brought things back into the right proportions with just a few concise comments. He was a genuine “Mr.

Jyllands-Posten” with a secure sense of and respect for the soul and spirit of the newspaper – and how to handle this in practice,” as Mikkelsen wrote in Knud’s obituary in the newspaper.

SNDS Magazine 2014|4 In My Honest Opinion

We need a lot of help Flemming Hvidtfeldt fhvidtfeldt@yahoo.dk

 The

conference FUSION14 in October in Copenhagen turned out to be a success. The evaluation from the participants showed the organizers, that they had done a great job. So far so good. This year we unfortunately were in a fierce competition with the SND conference that was held in Frankfurt in late September. This will not happen again. SND has decided to move their conference to springtime for the next couple of years and we will still have the SNDS conference in October for the years to come. But the conflict in timing between the two conferences this year has led to the conclusion, that more cooperation between SND and SNDS is vital. Cooperation and timing is not only needed because of the time-conflict regarding the conferences. It is also needed – and more urgently – because both SND and SNDS are facing in fact bigger problems in the time to come. Both organizations are facing a decline in membership. No reason to hide the fact. Due to the economical crisis and to the fact that a number of printed newspapers have been closed or are merging both in the US and in Scandinavia the number of members is declining too. And the fact is that not so many people from online organizations are aware of the existence of either SND or SNDS.

will the SND president David Kordalski. We have already agreed upon that. But we can not come up with all ideas alone. We need help. We need your inspiration, your ideas, your input to the work of becoming more modern and more relevant to as many people as possible, so we all have an organization that is relevant to the members. On top of that we need you as advocates for the organizations. You have to tell your colleagues about SNDS and SND what they can gain from a membership a part from a conference once every year. And you have to tell, that we are not a solely print organization. We are in news design on all platforms. One of the things I think would be great to communicate is the fact that through a membership of SNDS you get access to a network solely about newsdesign on all platforms. A network that is usable. But I’m sure you have many other and more great ideas on how to promote the organization. Not only for the benefit of SNDS and SND but for the benefit of you. Do not hesitate. Come up with the ideas today. Talk to your colleagues and ask them to bring ideas forward. Fell free to mail any suggestions to me or one of the members of the board. Your comments, ideas and suggestions will be highly appreciated. 

IMHO That calls for action. Without members you and we will not have SND or SNDS. Co operation and exchanging of ideas on how to bring up the number of members are a main aim for the coming year. I will work for a better cooperation between SND and SNDS. And so
