GREENVILLE HEALTHCARE PROJECTS Greenville, South Carolina Fall 2018 I Professor David Allison + Byron Edwards Team Collaboration I Sneha Rajput, Autumn Wines, Madilyn DuBois, Chengli Ma
During the Fall 2018 semester, two projects were designed which were related to cancer care on GHS campus. First one was the Maggie’s Center and the second one the Cancer Center. Both the projects are incorporated in this compilation of works. Both, Maggie’s Centre and Cancer center, were designed on the same site during different times in the semester of Fall 2018. The site is connected to Groove road from one side which is the front side of the site. The other two sides of the site are connected roads which are part of the campus adjoining parking lot and health sciences building.

CONCEPTUAL SKETCH
Uninterrupted views
Harvest Natural daylight
SITE P LA N N ING The initial concept was to have uninterrupted views and to harvest natural light. The approach to the site was to have a structures which fits naturally. The connection between the site and building is maintained by introducing ramps and decks so that the users can take advantage of the surrounding nature. Ease of way finding and a clear, welcoming entry were primarily taken into consideration while planning the site.

PROVISION OF COMMON AREA AT THE HEART
BUIL D I N G D E S I G N The idea behind designing the floor plan is to maintain a continuity in the flow of the functions. The functions are divided in public and private spaces. Offices, quiet rooms and counseling room.are designed to be private spaces. Whereas, living, dining, kitchen, library and large room are classified as public spaces. The living, dining and kitchen have an open plan. First steps in building design was to configure the right positioning of the shapes of the structure. The shapes of the structures are angled to achieve maximum benefit from the site such as welcoming entry approach and outside deck to connect with the nature. The next step was to merge the shapes of the structures which helped programmatically in creating common activity areas between the public and private spaces.

GHS CANCER CENTER Greenville, South Carolina Fall 2018 I Professor David Allison + Byron Edwards Team Collaboration I Sneha Rajput, Autumn Wines, Madilyn DuBois, Chengli Ma The GHS Cancer Center is a care center in which Clinical, Radiological and services related to infusion are provided. The care center promises to provide a better built environment for the cancer patients and their care takers. The Cancer Center provides clear easy way finding, respite spaces connecting to the nature, common but still secluded infusion bays facing nature. The Cancer Center also encourages interaction with the community by creating plazas and different communal spaces. Main goal of this three week project, to increase the staff patient and caretaker efficiency level, was achieved succesfully.
07
SITE P LA N N ING This site is part of GHS Healthcare campus. The site is triangular in shape and is surrounded by roads. The front side of the site is facing Groove road and the other two roads are facing the internal of GHS campus. The strategy for planning of this site, primarily, was to design easy way finding for the users, to achieve uninterrupted views, creating common space for interaction, provision of respite and retreat spaces, create communal spaces. A plaza was created between Cancer Center and Maggies’ Center to activate the inbetween space. The structure is pushed towards the front to create space for communal connectivity, easy entrance to the building as well as creating provision of basement parking.

throughout the structure. The programs of the structure are divided into administrative spaces, cafe and building support on the first floor and Clinics, Infusion on the second floor plan. Incorporating the views as a part of the spatial design was an conscious effort. The Infusion bays are located on the south side overhanging the water body to be in nature as much as possible. The clinics are located in north direction which is the front side of the site to gather attention. Radiology is located partially underground. Skylight is provided in the linear accelerators along with green wall.

Segregation of public and private circulation is done vertically as well as horizontally. Separate elevators are provided to reduce direct interaction between staff and patients/caretakers. All the public spaces are pushed to the south side of the structure for maximum view of nature. Grand staircase is provided abutting the atrium facing towards the vegetation, to encourage the user to take staircase instead of elevators.

SITE P LA N N ING
The proposed site is 0.9 acres which incorporates mixed use development such as Workshops, studio apartments, group homes, 1-bedroom apartments and a community center. The concept of site planning was to have group homes located in the center of the site abutting the backside of the site to have an easy way finding for the site entrance. The group homes are positioned not only to have maximum privacy but also to integrate a sense of connection to the community by adjoining workshop, apartments and community center. The idea of workshop , studio and 1 bedroom apartments, next to the group homes was to have sense of community for the elderly as well to generate revenue to support the congregate care financially. The internal pathways connects the front side which is the commercial street to the residential area in the back. Private pathways and common spaces for social interactions are also provided.

The phasing process made us understand how the existing hospital could continue to function during the new construction and how would the work flow be affected. In the campus master plan we had to address the existing hospital which was a challenge in terms of planning during the phasing process in the development of the project. In our facility development we had to design for functional programs as Inpatient care, Outpatient Care, Oncology along with the mechanical and parking for the current future expansion. One of our goal in designing the Campus master plan was to invite the community into the campus. Various spaces were created to attract the people into the campus, Gathering spaces such as plazas, amphitheatre are added to the design. Our intension was to bring in the people of the community not only for healthcare but also to just relax and retreat. Atrium played an important role in the design as it connected the urban side of the city to the landscaped side of the site.

HELPING HAND CARE HOME + TRAINING CENTER Asheville, North Carolina Spring 2017 I Professor Peter Lawrence Individual Work The Helping hand Care Home + Training Center program is designed to help the physically challenged population of Asheville and to generate a sense of community amongst them. As Saint Lawrence Basilica is next to the site , the facility also includes few residential units for the monks. The Helping Hand Care home primarily gives opportunity to the physically challenged people to be independent, to be leader of their own life, set an example for others and to have sense of equality with the community. The Care home also has integrated different workshops to help train them and make them independent. The idea is put them on a path towards financial independance through employment.

“ILLUMINE” - A VESSEL OF LIGHT, A STOREFRONT FOR PHILOSOPHY” Greenville, South Carolina Fall 2016 I Professor Andrea Michalache Individual Work - Handmade drawings by the use of graphite and charcoal “ ILLUMINE” - : “ A Vessel for Light, A Store front for Philosophy” was a project which extended the intellectual, spatial, atmospheric, and material investigation. It was supposed to be assumed that the project has been commissioned by a philosopher to design a Vessel for (En)Light(enment),” a store front for philosophy. The client, who was inspired by reading the Allegory of the Cave, wants a transcendental space where daylight (and shadow) is the primary element— the essence of the architecture, the basis of material selection and form. As such, the client wants interesting and inspiring spaces, not practical functions.
32
CO N T EX T Located at 20 South Main in Greenville, SC, the site for this project is a typical urban storefront building site, facing a typical Main Street, in a typical American city’s downtown. The existing building will be torn down. The site is narrow and deep—and therefore the primary challenge is getting light into its depth. The height limit is approximately six stories, but the heights of neighboring buildings should be considered. Although the building cannot encroach onto the sidewalk (or neighboring airspaces), the sidewalk is wide enough to allow activities to spill out onto the sidewalk. The site does have a problem (which made it more affordable to acquire): it does not have rear alley access. Egress is therefore be provided by a narrow outdoor alley running the length of the building to the sidewalk. Vertical circulation is considered.
CO N CEP T The concept was to segregate the public, semi-public and private but still maintain the continuity and the flow in the circulation. The public part was mostly the open gallery facing narrow side to the road. The semi-public part was mainly lecture rooms, conference hall and the private part was the philosophers office and studio in the back of the site which was partly underground.
Public
Semi-public
Private
The client selected this site for its interaction with the public. The plans were designed to engage the public both with the architecture and in activities within the building. Therefore, functionally, the goal was to interest people at the street and sidewalk, and to provide variuos sized spaces for variously sized gatherings, from the size of a lecture to small groups to solo reading, writing, and meditation. A funnel shaped structure is introduced to create the vessel of light inside the space.

Skylights were provided in the gallery part and other part of the store to introduce different patterns of light.

Convergence of Sanctity - All Faith Chapel is a place on campus of Clemson University where the students of Clemson University can worship and meditate and find peace of mind. The primary function of the chapel is to provide a sense of security and safety in the minds of students, that there is a place where the students can go and spend their time in-between of their hectic schedules. The concept was to create an atmosphere inside the building by which the students can relax, unwind and for sometime at least forget about the worries and concerns. The spaces are designed to have privacy when required and the chance to interact when needed. The structure has funnel shaped feature on each side of the building to capture the light and help in building the atmosphere. Along with the building the site is also connected to the surrounding by creating plaza connecting to the 1957 rotunda.

As the site is surrounded by streets on all sides, the idea was to create a place which has its own atmosphere and which can help the students to disconnect from the outer world to find inner peace. The structure is located next to the parkway drive creating a space adjoining to the structure which then connects to the 1957 Rotunda. Connection to the Rotunda helps in redefining the space as a plaza which in turn provides a space where the students can sit, chat, work, meditate and just enjoy being in nature. The structure is designed in a way so as to have a clear, easy way finding. The entire structure is broken down in three categories of spaces mainly public, semi public and private. All the public activites take place on the ground floor. Private spaces which are offices spaces located on the ground floor in the from of square rooms. The second floor has prayer rooms on top of the offices and a candle room. Candle room has an unfinished surface from inside which cuts the wall to create an unique atmosphere by candle light falling on the surfaces.
