Here are Judge Jerry’s top tips to help prepare you for entering a competition. If you haven’t entered a competition before, then why not have a go? It’s a brilliant way to improve selfconfidence and boost your career early on.

Ask your tutor or your employer to discuss your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you focus on areas that need improving

Research how successful competitors prepare for their competitions, such as Ruben Duggen (2022 HIP Learner of the Year Winner)

4 Compare your skills to your classmates. Are you the one helping them! Then you probably stand out

Listen to the judges on the day, make notes and follow their guidance. Ask them to explain anything that you are not sure about

9 Planning is the key to being successful. So, take your time and plan what you are going to do BEFORE you pick up any tools

You are going to want to work hard on the competition day, so make sure you keep hydrated and wear comfortable clothes and knee pads!
