Welcome
t’s a wonderful time to visit Carson City. The trees and flowers are all in full bloom and the trails are ready for prime running and bike riding. This area boasts some of the best and most easily accessible outdoor recreation areas. With an average of 253 sunny days per year, you’re likely to have perfect weather to explore for yourself. If, during your adventures, you want to take a piece of the earth home with you, you are in luck. Nevada is a treasure trove of rocks and minerals. Right in the city limits, you can find jasper, agate, petrified wood, copper, crystals and more. Stop by Rocking and Rolling and talk to owner Jeanette Champagne (see story on
Page 4) to find the best places to hound. Maybe history is more your style? Then you’re in the right place. Follow the 2.5-mile Kit Carson Trail to learn about the city’s early settlers. Meet the map’s artist on Page 12. For a more in-depth look at the area’s history, including the historic Comstock Lode, take a ride on the V&T Railroad. The railway’s owner Tom Gray gives an insider’s glimpse into its storied history and current operations on Page 8. Then again, if you just want to kick back and enjoy a beer and listen to some live music, we’ve got that, too. Whatever your pleasure, we’re sure you can find it here.

Jeanette Champagne, right, owner of Rocking and Rolling, shows customer Nanette Ames a string of moonstone beads for making jewelry. Champagne uses her background in geology and knowledge of folklore to pair customers with the stones to fit their needs.

I
t’s hard for Jeanette Champagne to pinpoint when her interest in rocks began. “I think I was born with it,” she
mused.
She remembers as a child collecting rocks
out of the family’s driveway. “I would pick out all the pretty rocks and put them in my window,” she recalled. “My dad would tell me, ‘Those aren’t your rocks. They’re my rocks. When you get older, you can have your own rocks.’ And I always remembered that. When I grow up, I can have my own rocks.” She’s made good on that promise to herself, opening Rocking and Rolling eight years ago in downtown Carson City. But more than focus on finding her own stones, she finds satisfaction in helping others find theirs — both by rockhounding and in her store. “Nevada is a treasure trove of rocks and minerals,” she said. “This business is not about money, it’s about my passion. If I feel like I’ve matched the right person up with the right crystal, that’s my reward.” Champagne got started down the path, taking the traditional route of earning a bachelor’s degree in geology. “In school, I learned all of the technical things,” she said. “I enjoyed learning about the earth and the structure of how rocks were formed and why they formed where they did.” After graduating, she learned what wasn’t taught in school.
“
Whether they believe or not, that doesn’t matter. I don’t try to convince anybody. The power is in positive thinking. I don’t tell people not to go to the doctor, it’s just a matter of having something tangible to hold on to for positive thinking.” — JEANETTE CHAMPAGNE
Rockhounding In the first couple of months after opening her store, Champagne became overwhelmed with requests from customers wanting to know where to look for stones and how to recognize them. As a result, she started the Carson City Rockhounding Club, which has monthly field trips and other activities. For the visitor, she sends them on nearby scouting adventures. “I understand and appreciate the treasures we have here,” she said. “I have all kinds of handouts and books for day trips or just to go out for a couple of hours. Depending how much time and interest they have, I recommend different outings.” Here are some of her recommendations: Kings Canyon: They can drive right up to the end of Kings Canyon and take that great hike to the waterfall. Along the way, they can find field spars, epidote, copper, crystals, all kinds of things. Bureau of Land Management Office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road: People can look in that area off of Deer Run Road near the BLM office. They’ll find agates, jasper and petrified wood. Carson River: You can still pan for gold along the Carson River. Fallon: For a longer excursion, I’ll send them out to Fallon to look for wonderstone, which used to be the state stone. They have the added benefit of going out to Grimes Point where they can see petroglyphs.
ROCKING AND ROLLING 402 W. Curry St. (775) 267-5144
“I started learning about the metaphysical and the folklore,” she said. “Now, I’m caught in the middle. I love the part of knowing how it forms, but I also love why people are attracted to certain rocks.” She said about half of her customers come into the store knowing exactly what they’re looking for and why. The other half come in looking for advice. “So much of my day is education,” she said. “By the end of the day, my lips are numb. But if I can impart just a little bit of wisdom to someone, and they learn something, then I feel like my day has been a success.” After moving to Carson City, Champagne opened her rock shop — she’s owned two others in Arizona

and Alaska — in a historic home on Curry Street. She started with just one room in the house, but has now expanded to the entire home. “This place called to me, like some kind of magnetic force,” she said. “I knew if I was patient and talked to the universe, I would get the space. I was rewarded for my patience.” In addition to rocks and crystals, she also sells locally made art. “That was really important to me because I’d bonded with Nevada so much,” she said. “I wanted to be part of the Made In Nevada Program. We need to help people who don’t have a place to show their talent.” When visitors come into her store, she said, she tries to educate them about local stones first.
“People are absolutely shocked that we have opals in Nevada,” she said. “And turquoise. People are surprised to find out we are the largest producer of turquoise in the world.” Others include allanite, jasper, agates, petrified wood and selenite. “One of the big ones is chrysocolla from Mason Valley and Smith Valley,” she said. “The folklore is that it’s a cancer therapy stone.” The right stone, however, is the one the customer wants. “You don’t have to believe, maybe you just like the color,” she said. “You don’t have to know the background. You don’t have to know the folklore. You don’t have to know the name. If it calls to you, that’s what matters.”

RIDING THE TRAIN
BACK in TIME TOM GRAY KEEPS HIS FATHER’S DREAM, THE V&T RAILROAD, ALIVE BY TERI VANCE
I
n the years since Tom Gray first set foot in his dad’s V&T Railroad shop in 1974, the world has seen many changes. “They’re paving over all the dirt roads, old buildings are crumbling,” he observed. Inside the Virginia City shop, it can seem as if time stands still. On a recent afternoon, crews were servicing Engine No. 18, a steam engine built in 1914. “I was wearing green Levi’s the first day I came to Virginia City,” Gray recalled. “I’m wearing green Levi’s today.” The impulse to preserve the past runs in his genes. His father, Robert Gray, as a 17-year-old rode on the final run to Virginia City in 1938. A lifelong railroad enthusiast, the elder Gray traveled from his Sacramento home to rebuild track between Virginia City and Gold Hill, after purchasing the right of way in 1972. Gray, just out of high school, was working with his dad from the beginning, and was there celebrating when the first tourist train ran in July 1976 as part of the bicentennial celebration. “This was a big deal to get it going,” Gray recalled. The rebuilt portion of track brought back to life the train built in the 1870s to carry the ore from the mines to the mills along the Carson River for refining. It was also used to transport lumber from Lake Tahoe to Virginia City. At first, the restored train ran with leased equipment. They bought their first engine, No. 29, a 1916 Baldwin, in 1977. Since then, more than 2 million passengers have taken a ride on the track that runs roundtrip from Virginia City to Gold Hill daily from May through October. In 2010, the track was extended to the Carson City Depot, with trains running on the weekends and for special events. Passengers have a 3.5-hour layover in the historic mining town before returning to Carson City. “People come from all over the world to ride the train,” Gray said. The railcars have been restored true
More than 2 million passengers have taken a ride on the historic V&T Railroad
to the time period they were built, with vintage luggage and decor adding to the ambiance. A poster from 1876 hangs in the historic Virginia City car, advertising the Lightning Express, which ran from Virginia City to San Francisco. “It catered to mine owners who had to do business in San Francisco,” Gray explained. “If they found a gold strike, you could go to San Francisco and buy up stock before anybody else. Those guys had it figured out.” Historic photos line the inside walls of the cars, and Gray can point out where all the old landmarks would be today. Passengers learn the history of the area as they ride the train. Gray took over daily operations of the train as vice president of the company after earning a master’s de-
gree in business from the University of Nevada, Reno. His father, now 96, continues as president. In addition to the historic engines that continue to operate on the line, they also have a collection of significant pieces, including old cars featured in “Gone With the Wind” and Johnny Depp’s “Dead Man.” While Gray can recite the history of the V&T and of the area it covered in full detail and color, he readily admits it’s not merely the train that draws the tourists. “It’s pretty exciting when you see the steam train,” Gray said. “But there’s so much more to see. It’s Nevada. We have wild horses and these big, monstrous open spaces. It’s a pretty spectacular view. That’s why we have these big windows — so people can see the scenery.”

Mapping the City’s History M
ost Carson City residents benefit from Deb Ottinger’s work — even if they don’t know it. “I do all of those things people don’t think a lot about,” she said. “I design streets, sewer mains, storm drains — those kinds of things. People just turn on their faucets and water comes out. They flush their toilets, and it goes away. It’s pretty artistic in its own way.” Visitors to the capital city will likely see her work as well. Ottinger created the artwork for the updated map of the Kit Carson Trail, which showcases the city’s historic district. “I loved it,” she said. “By doing these drawings, I got a much more in-depth understanding of how this town came to be.” Ottinger, a civil engineering designer for Carson City Public Works, had used her artistic skills in the past to create photo simulations of proposed projects to allow the public to see what the finished project would look like. She is also a sculptor, carver and painter. Knowing of her skill set, officials asked her to create an animated illustration of a parking map for the Nevada Fair. “I did a drawing with icons to denote local landmarks, like Bodine’s and Fuji Park,” Ottinger said. Once the map was published in the newspaper, others took notice and Ottinger was eventually tapped to create an updated version of the walking map. She drew each of the homes and other landmarks featured Debra Ottinger, a civil on the map. engineering designer for “We really like the fun energy of her drawings,” Carson City Public Works, said Kyle Horvath, marketing manager for the Carson created the artwork for City Culture and Tourism Authority. “The new map is the new map of the Kit more animated and three-dimensional, better reflectCarson Trail. ing the charm of the historic west side.” Horvath recommends pairing the new map with the audio tour, available on the Visit Carson City app. “The audio tour really immerses the visitor in the stories of the homes,” he said. “Using it in conjunction with the updated map provides the ultimate visitor experience.” Ottinger, who moved to Carson City from Montana nine years ago, has fallen in love with the area. “I really enjoy living here,” she said. “It’s a neat little small town. It’s a great place to live.” One of her favorite parts of researching for the map, she said, was discovering which of the old homes have been reported to be haunted. Each of those places on the map is denoted with a ghost. “It was a really cool way to learn more about the history that I had no idea about,” she said. For instance, she learned that prior to the Governor’s Mansion being built in 1930, whichever home the governor lived in was considered the governor’s mansion. “The building where Adele’s is now was once a governor’s mansion,” she said. She hopes that her artwork will help people see the city with the same eyes she sees it. “I hope they can see what a lovely place it is,” she said. “If they follow the map, they can get off of Carson Street and see a much deeper view of Carson City.” CARSON CITY VISITORS GUIDE | SUMMER 2018 • 15

BREWING BEERS SHOE TREE BREWING CO., OPENED BY BROTHERS JEFF AND PAUL YOUNG IN 2017, IS SET TO DOUBLE ITS BEER-MAKING CAPACITY SOON BY TERI VANCE

Brothers Jeff, left, and Paul Young started brewing together in their garage and have since turned it into a successful business. The brewery typically has 10-13 unique beers available at any time.
rothers Jeff and Paul Young planned a soft opening of their brewery as a way to ease into the business before the official opening. “That was not the case,” Jeff recalled. “We soft-opened to numbers we didn’t think we’d see on the grand opening. Paul was taking orders, and I was pumping beer as fast as I could. It feels like it’s been that way ever since.” Opening its doors in March 2017, the Shoe Tree Brewing Co. has seen the business only grow in popularity and will soon double its capacity for making beer. “It’s the result of a perfect storm,” Jeff said. “The first is the popularities of breweries right now. There’s also the fact that we grew up here and have so many friends and family in Carson City, which helps get the word out. Mostly, it’s the quality of our product. If you make something good, ideally people will seek it out.” The success has exceeded their wildest dreams — and the brothers spent many years dreaming wildly. It all started in Jeff’s garage. After Paul graduated from Carson High School in 2005 — nine years after Jeff did in 1996 — he moved in with Jeff while attending the University of Nevada, Reno. “There was such an age gap, I didn’t have much of a relationship with him,” Jeff said. “Our relationship happened when he got older, especially when

he moved in with me and my family. That’s when I got to know him.” As their relationship grew, so did their hobby of home brewing, and they started to see a future in it. Paul, who until then had been taking core classes, focused on a business degree while working at the Mentor Center of Western Nevada. It’s the result of a perfect storm. The first is the popularities of breweries right now. There’s also the fact that we grew up here and have so many friends and family in Carson City, which helps get the word out.” — JEFF YOUNG
springs. “We knew Sassafras was out here, and they were doing good, and the Carson Hot Springs was busy. So we knew people were coming out,” Paul said. “With the freeway being finished, it was easy for people to get here from Reno. All of these things added to our success.” The brewery typically has 10-13 beers available at any time. “We probably have the most unique and diverse rail in Carson City,” Jeff said. “We try to have something for everyone. We have everything from a light blond ale to a really dark stout and all the varieties in between.” They even have beer for non-beer drinkers. “Our sour cherry has brought in a lot of wine drinkers,” Jeff said. “It’s got a little bit of a fruit flavor. It’s tart.” They also accommodate those looking for something without alcohol with drinks like root beer, lavender lemonade or a sparkling Sunny Delight or Cherry Kool-Aid. The true magic, however, is the chemistry between the brothers. Although they no longer live together, they said they work on a healthy relationship both personally and professionally. “Part of it is making sure you don’t get your feelings hurt when you speak your mind,” Paul said. “You have to be willing to give ground if you need to — or stick to your guns if it’s very important.” CARSON CITY VISITORS GUIDE | SUMMER 2018 • 21
Running This Town THE CARSON CITY BACKCOUNTRY — REGARDLESS OF SEASON — HAS BECOME A TRAIL-RUNNING MECCA BY TERI VANCE
» OUTDOORS
N
o matter the time of the year, come snow or sunshine, there is bound to be a race in the backcountry of Carson City. “Carson City has really identified itself as a trail-running community,” said EJ Maldonado of Tahoe Mountain Milers and Carson Area Runners. “We’ve got races to support that run through the entire year. We have trails going out in every direction.” Ascent Runs kicks off its annual Winter Trail Series, “Be Bold, Run in the Cold,” each November. They host one race a month through March, no matter the weather. The winter series leads right into the spring, with a series of half-marathons. The Carson Canyons Half Marathon utilizes the relatively new Ash to Kings Canyon Trail in the west part of town. The second, Escape from Prison Hill, is run on the steep, sandy, often brutal Prison Hill on the east side of town. That series concludes with the Silver State 50/50 Half Marathon. The summer runs — the Dirt & Vert Series — include lots of miles and lots of climbing. The Genoa Peak Madathon has runners climbing 6,700 feet over 25 miles. The Creek 2 Peak racers run 21 miles from Davis Creek Park to Slide Mountain, climbing 5,000 feet. Runners in the Capital Climb start in Carson City and climb 5,600 feet over 23 miles to Snow Peak. In the fall, racers can participate in the Flume Trail Fall Classic, taking in some of the most epic views of Lake Tahoe. More than races, almost any day of the week, there will be a group of runners getting together to rack up some miles. The Tahoe Mountain Milers and Carson Area Runners regularly schedule group runs, along with informal gatherings. Ascent Physical Therapy starts off the Thursday group run with a mini clinic. “A big part of running is recovery,” explained owner Kevin Bigley. “The quicker they can recover, the quicker they can get out and get in some quality runs.”

Freeway art depicts region’s history, habitat
Artwork lines the I-580 bypass through Carson City. Pictured clockwise from top left are: A metal cutout of the historic V&T Railroad on the Highway 50 East overpass. An Old West scene on the Fairview Drive overpass.
Motorists who take the freeway through Carson City will be exposed to a brief history as well as an overview of the plants and animals native to the area — perhaps without even knowing it. Thanks to a forward-thinking organization, GROW (Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides), the I-580 bypass is lined with artwork depicting the region’s history. The entrances on both the north and south sides are marked by eagle statues — one sitting and one in flight — in honor of the Eagle Valley where Carson City is nestled. Deer are also dotted along the north side. Ranchers are depicted at the intersection with Fifth Street, explorers on Fairview Drive. Basque sheep herders, driving their herds through the aspen trees, are represented along Koontz Lane. The Snyder Avenue Bridge, which crosses over tribal land, is also designated with the Washoe descriptor, “Usewe Wat A.” It means Rabbit Drive Creek, what that area was called before Snyder Avenue — or the state of Nevada, for that matter — even existed. It was the place tribal members traditionally held rabbit hunts using nets and clubs. The sound wall along that area features engravings of Native American baskets. Additional information about each historical vignette can be found on the signs located along the walking/biking path that runs alongside the freeway.
