RIFLE ANIMAL SHELTER RIFLE ANIMAL SHELTER

Participants enjoy the 2018 Strut for Mutts in Rifle’s Deerfield Park on April 21.

Renne Franco has made Strut for Mutts an important part of his life over the past four years.

BEST FUNDRAISING EVENT

Gimme shelter: Raising dough to benefit Fido Charlie Wertheim cwertheim@postindependent.com

Strut for Mutts may be a Rifle-based fundraiser, but money comes in from Los Angeles and even Germany. That’s thanks to Renne Franco of Rifle, who hasn’t missed the event the last four years. “I reach out to all my friends locally and in different states,” he said. “My family is expecting me to reach out to them.” Strut for Mutts is a benefit for the Rifle Animal Shelter where participants bring

6 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

their dogs to Deerfield Park and show them off. “It is great to see how proud families are of their dogs,” shelter development and events coordinator Kalli Wilson said. According to shelter executive director Heather Mullen, the event raised $12,136 in 2018, $215 of which came from Franco, who raised the most of all participants. But he isn’t impressed with that. “It wasn’t a good year,” he said. “The first year a colleague and I raised about $1,000 for the shelter.” Franco says this is one of the rare

occasions he has his hand out. “I keep to myself, so [my friends and family] know when I reach out it’s important to me.” All the money doesn’t come from participants, though. “We have a program called Pawgrams that we do through the month of April that promotes Strut for Mutts. It’s similar to the March of Dimes program but with paws. People can donate at over 35 local businesses ranging from Glenwood Springs to Parachute and fill out a paw that the businesses then hang up,” Wilson said. “There are more businesses in the

Pawgram challenge this year than ever. It’s cool to drive around Rifle and see so many businesses supporting the shelter,” Mullen said. And the Strut for Mutts turnout was about 100 people, the best yet, Mullen said. “It’s always in April. Watch for it next year. We thank our community for coming out and supporting us,” she said. Franco, 33, embodies that notion. “The shelter does a lot of things for our community, so it’s always nice to do something to help them. They can’t continue to do what they do without support,” he said.

After working in salons for years together Valentina Epps and her friend Ansley Dennis opened Coiffure Salon with the hopes of providing Rifle folks a new spot to get a haircut, and now just a few years later, Epps has been named Locals’ Choice best hair stylist, and Coiffure has been named best hair salon. “We opened Coiffure in 2014 and just felt it was time for us to start our own salon,” Epps said of their partnership. “We worked together for many years and have built a wonderful customer base through

8 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

The two started working together at the Hair Company in Rifle before opening Coiffure. While Epps said that when they started it was long hard hours to build a Rolodex of clients, but now she has a wide variety of clients from Aspen to Grand Junction. She said her favorite part of the job is building relationships with people. “Somebody might come in who’s down or having a bad day, and a new look can

completely turn things around for them,” Dennis explained. “We cultivate relationships and can be a bright spot for people no matter what kind of day they are having. They will feel confident walking out of the door.” Some of Epps’ favorite memories working in the salon have been around Christmas time when families come in to take pictures and celebrate the holidays in style. “Family has been an important part of our lives and out clients’ lives,” she said. “Just to see the look on some of our clients’ faces during the holidays every year lets us be part of the celebration.”

Epps said it took her around three years to build the kind of client base she has now, but it is always growing, and she is just happy to have the clients she does. “We just love and appreciate our clients,” she said. “It’d be impossible without them to have our own salon.” When Epps went to beauty school she quickly developed a burning passion for the industry and even finished school early. “I always knew I wanted to do this,” she said. “We give people confidence and can change a person’s day or just give them a great moment. “

BEST COFFEEHOUSE

People come first at Misty’s Coffee Shop Carla Jean Whitley cj@postindependent.com

During her years growing up in Silt, Misty Kearns noticed an issue. People lived in the town, but they worked elsewhere. As a result, Silt lacked a strong sense of community. Kearns set out to change that in 2015, when she opened Misty’s Coffee Shop. Both the storefront and the coffee industry represent an opportunity to bring people together, and that’s exactly what Kearns has witnessed during her three years in business.

12 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

The shop was a dream years in the making. Kearns’ family has always been coffee enthusiasts, and she began daydreaming of opening a coffee shop as a student at Coal Ridge High School. By age 19, Kearns began to seriously consider options. She knew she wanted a space in her hometown, but it was a matter of where.

Kearns has noticed customers building relationships as they wait in line, and she has also developed in-shop friendships that blossom outside of Misty’s. People regularly call the shop to learn about housing and job opportunities — things that are irrelevant to the coffee shop, but that the staff hears about because of Misty’s role as a community connector.

Williams and family, who Kearns has known since she was 14. Now she serves coffee roasted by his Mountain Mama Roasters. It isn’t the cheapest option, Kearns noted, but she selected it because of taste and the companies’ shared values. Mountain Mama works to ensure the farmers whose product it buys are paid a living wage, and it promotes sustainable farming practices. Kearns said she wants to honor each person whose work goes into the finished product, from farmer to barista.

The daydream sustained her during a year of mission work in Uganda. By the time she returned, Kearns had a business plan in

The shop’s operations are also a reflection of Kearns’ people-first mentality. She spent her year in Uganda living with Kenneth

“Coffee is a story,” she said. “The grand finale is presenting this beautiful, warm, soul-filling thing.”

“I wanted to create a space where people could have a pause in their day and visit with friends and family,” she said.

BEST DRIVING RANGE

Lakota offers great views, public driving range jcarney@postindependent.com

of the 2018 Locals’ Choice award for Best Driving Range in the area.

Featuring the only public driving range between New Castle and Aspen, Lakota Canyon Ranch & Golf Club offers a picturesque view of the Grand Hogback mountain range, as well as the Colorado River flowing in the valley below. Thanks to the fantastic views afforded to golfers at the range, and the accessibility for community members, Lakota Canyon Ranch & Golf Club’s public driving range is the winner

Located just below the Flat Tops Wilderness Area, and easily accessed from the Interstate 70 corridor in New Castle, Lakota Canyon is one of Colorado’s most spectacular golf courses easily playable in a day trip from the Aspen to Rifle area. Opened in May 2004, Lakota Canyon continues to be one of the best courses in all of Colorado, and now adds Best Driving Range to its crowded mantle of awards.

Josh Carney

18 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

A grass and practice mat range, accommodating as many as 20 individual hitting stations, is available for you to hone your game. “Aside from the views offered to golfers, what makes the driving range so unique for the valley is that it’s the only public driving range from New Castle to Aspen,” former Coal Ridge boys and girls golf head coach Greg Gortsema said. “Rifle has a driving range accessible to the public, but Glenwood does not. Ironbridge has a wonderful driving range, but it’s only open

to club members, and those getting ready to play a round. Part of the uniqueness is that when you’re hitting balls at the range, you’ve got a wonderful view to relax and work on your game.” As a public driving range, Lakota Canyon is very affordable, charging just $10 for a large bucket of balls, and just $6 for a small bucket of balls. Range passes for 25 or 50 tokens can be purchased for as little as $20, and as much as $50, while club members received unlimited range time.

BEST SUMMER CAMP

The camp where kids get to run amok Matthew bennett mabennett@postindependent.com

Once school lets out, Crystal River Elementary School in Carbondale transforms into the Roaring Fork Valley’s premier summer destination for children, Camp Run-A-Muk. Offering a safe setting for children when that last school bell of the year rings, the camp welcomes children kinder through 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The list of activities includes everything from Lego-mania to yoga, dramatic play to climbing walls, cooking, swimming lessons, and the always-popular scrumptious snacks.

20 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

Camp Run-A-Muk also features numerous clubs for different sports, arts and crafts, games and activities. Sports include friendly athletics such as indoor soccer and even floor hockey. Campers may also participate in a wide variety of arts and crafts incorporating jewelry, bead animals, crochet and more. Other popular camp games and activities include freeze dance, karaoke and even face painting. Summer after summer, children from across the valley develop life-long friendships with fellow campers and interact with highly qualified counselors and, of course, Ms. Honey. Ms. Honey, aka Jennifer Soucie, describes herself as someone who, even if she

won the lottery, would still look forward to Camp Run-A-Muk every summer and loves serving as what she calls the children’s “proverbial grandmother.” “The purpose of Camp Run-A-Muk is to provide a safe environment to children in and out of school times, emphasizing dramatic play, games and arts and crafts,” according to the center’s purpose and philosophy on child care. “It is our philosophy to enhance each child’s individuality by process not product.” Gearing up for another fun-filled summer, campers this year can look forward to each week’s unique theme. For the aspiring artists out there, get ready for Random Acts of Art. For

campers that like getting their hands dirty, beware of Bugs, Slugs and Muk week. The youngsters will also get the chance to show off their patriotism on Fourth of July Week and then shortly following can get grooving to Groovy Mountain Fair week. And, for the pirates out there, be ready to jump onboard for Pirate Week. Camp Run-A-Muk has a variety of activities to welcome and cultivate each child’s specific areas of interest and creativity, and towards the end of the summer they will get to show off everything they learned at the Talent Show. Although the school year will soon come to a close, the fun at Camp Run-A-Muk is just gearing up.

Debbie Anne Moeller, a certified pediatric nurse practitioner, was voted best pediatrician.

BEST PEDIATRICIAN

Caring for children, regardless of their ability to pay Tatiana Flowers tflowers@postindependent.com

Debbie Anne Moeller purchased Castle Valley Children’s Clinic in 2000, in hopes of continuing the facility’s legacy of caring for children regardless of their ability to pay. More than a decade later, Moeller says she’s proud of her ability to continue that mission, in a community she calls home, in an area where health care is expensive and resources are lacking. “If our kids aren’t healthy, our community isn’t healthy, and if unhealthy children

24 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

can’t go to school and learn, they can’t grow,” she said. When families are struggling, children struggle, she added. The certified pediatric nurse practitioner was born at Valley View Hospital and attended Rifle High School and the University of Colorado. She says that additional insight into the needs of the local community led her toward fulfilling this specific goal. More than 50 percent of her clients use Medicaid insurance or are uninsured,

and she offers a so-called “sliding scale” program for uninsured families. It gives them the opportunity, each visit, to pay a co-pay that’s based on their individual income. “As far as pediatrics goes, I don’t know that there are any other places that do sliding scales,” Moeller said. “We take anyone who walks through the door. We’re the only pediatric clinic that does that.” Moeller described herself as patient and compassionate, and that may be part of the reason she’s a 2018 Locals’ Choice winner

for pediatric services practitioner. Her passion is caring for children with special needs, an interest she says she developed while working at Children’s Hospital of Colorado in Denver. Moeller says, each day, while administering care, she strives to partner with parents, instead of dictating how they should raise and treat their children. “I just hope every day I can make a difference in the family’s life on their terms, and not dictate to them what those terms should be, and help them to raise a healthy, happy child,” she said.

BEST MEN’S CLOTHING STORE

Adding an urban dimension to mountainwear John Stroud When Ivy Arneson and Miles Rattet aren’t holding down shop at their Fourth Dimension “urban-casual” menswear store, you might find them tending bar at the Glenwood Canyon Resort Bar and Grille or dancing at Glenwood Springs Summer of Music. Arneson and Rattet, who are engaged to be married at the end of the summer, opened Fourth Dimension last summer on the Cooper Avenue side of the Hotel Denver building, next to Mona Lisa, which has been owned for many years by Ivy’s mother, Lisa Manzano. “It was a very, very interesting time to

26 • LOCALS’ CHOICE 2018

open a new store in downtown Glenwood, with the bridge construction and everything, and then a weak winter in terms of snow,” Rattet said. “But we kept our heads above water and made it through all that. “We’re really enthusiastic and excited about what’s to come this next year,” he said. Fourth Dimension fills a niche for men who are looking beyond mountainwear for a more “business-casual feel, mixed with a little urban, street style,” explains Arneson. “Lots of shorts, hoodies, tank tops, button-down T’s, ties. A tiny bit of everything.”

But that’s not to say it’s only for men, as many of the accessories, as well as hats, T-shirts and tank-tops are also proving to be attractive to female shoppers, they said. Adds Rattet, “We have it all right here in our tiny 370-square-foot space.” Arneson grew up in the retail clothing business, helping her mom at Mona Lisa, while Rattet has grown into the business side of things. “I’ve always been into clothes. I’m originally from Southern California, so that’s where a little bit of our urban vibe comes from,” he said. “I’ve also been in the mountains for the last 10 years, so it just kind of meshed.

“We want something funky and fun, but that still has a little bit of tactical purpose,” Rattet says. “We’ve had a vision for something like this for quite a few years, and it just all fell into place,” Arneson adds. “This community is always so good about supporting local businesses.” In their off hours, the couple enjoys some “us time,” snowboarding in the winter and wake boarding in the summer, and dancing to any live music they can find. “We always make sure to take Sundays off together to honor our relationship, and Wednesday nights are for dancing to music in the park,” Rattet says.
