BEAT THE NATURALLY! Written by Kippy Spilker

WHETHER burnin’ it up at Burning Man or baking in your own back yard, chances are you’ll be trying to find ways to beat the heat this August and September. Here are a few natural ways to keep cool this summer, from tips for the home to the foods most likely to keep you hydrated and healthy.

2

1

Instant “swamp cooler” – Hang a damp sheet in an open window when the air outside is dry and cooler than the air inside (like at night).

2

Close the damper on your fireplace – When it’s cooler in your house than it is outside (like when you run your air conditioning), the chimney will pull hot air into your house.

3

Lose your shoes – As your feet sweat, the evaporation will cool the skin and blood in your feet. The blood is then transported to other parts of your body, so you’ll feel cooler.

4

Cool the sheets – Fill an old cotton sock with rice, tie it at the top and freeze it for a couple hours before you go to bed. Slip the sock between the sheets for a bed-cooler – rice retains cold due to its density and starch. Just make sure there are no holes in that old sock, or sleeping may become very difficult.

5

Eat lots of cucumber and watermelon – Both are extremely hydrating and come with their own unique health benefits.

6

Try a new smoothie – Banana, spinach, kale, cucumber and pineapple – all considered cooling fruits and vegetables. Plus smoothies are easy to digest, which means you body doesn’t heat up as much with the hard work of digestion.

7

Spice up your water - Citrus is incredibly cooling, so adding it to your water can not only help cool you down, it can make your water more interesting, causing you to drink more and chase away the heat even more.

8

Emulate India – Many Indian foods and spices actually cool you down. The spicy foods help you sweat and often cause you to drink more water. Cardamom is a detoxifying spice, which cools the body. Fennel has many health benefits, including preventing heat stress. Sugarcane boosts your energy level and has a cooling effect (in fact they sell sugarcanes on the streets in India, and sell the fresh juice from stands in many of the cities).

Do you have any favorite natural and healthy ways to stay cool in the summer heat? If so, please share them with us on Facebook or Twitter.

I

am sure that many of you feel the same way as I do… the summer is flying by! I hope that you have had a wonderful summer and have been able to find time to do the things that you love and that feed your soul. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful area with so many options to enjoy nature, outdoor activities and healthy foods.

Our August issue is full of valuable information for health and well being: a fabulous book review about the importance of our pH, updates on effective Chiropractic treatment, how to be more involved with your doctor and the latest on facials and skin improvement techniques with a scary title! Our experts also share information regarding the effects of stress on our brains, and our calendar of events informs you of all the fun health-related activities going on in the area, for you and your families.

As August gets started, I was thinking about all of the families getting ready for the back to school activities that take place to help your children get ready for the new school year. One thing that is top of mind for our children is having healthy food options during their school day. How about creating a fun way to involve your child in helping with healthy food choices for school lunch and snacks? It could be as easy as making it a daily game to come up with three healthy choices to go in their lunch bag!

As always, we hope you enjoy this issue and find it valuable for your health. Please share your copy with family and friends. Happy August!

hen it comes to pain and symptoms, chiropractors believe in treating the source of the problem. By checking the vertebrae for misalignment, it may be discovered that they are unable to move and function as they were designed. These misaligned vertebrae are termed subluxation, fixation or motion defects. If not treated, the end result is Nerve Impingement Syndrome. Ultimately this translates to nervous system interference, resulting in pain or ill health. One shouldn’t have to rely on medications to get through the day; most may only mask the problem, instead of treating it.

PulStar technology was created to keep up with people in today’s society who are consistently asking their bodies to perform at higher levels and who want to feel better, safely and naturally.

What is the PulStar? The PulStar chiropractic treatments are performed comfortably, while sitting, standing or in a laying down position without the need for turning or sudden movements. These treatments are safe and gentle for everyone from newborns, to the elderly with osteoporosis.

PulStar Technology takes chiropractic care to the next level.

Significant advances in computer and engineering technologies have allowed chiropractors to both analyze and treat the human body in such a way that has never been realized before.

“If you are suffering from back pain,

you are not alone— about 80 percent of adults in the U.S. report experiencing back pain at some point in their lives, and many of them never seek treatment. Yet in today’s chiropractic world, multiple impulse technology offers a gentle solution that leaves patients pain-free in a fraction of the time without the twisting, popping and cracking of traditional chiropractic.”

Don’t suffer through another day with untreated pain! No twisting and popping using the Pulstar Adjuster, muscle testing with Applied Kinesiology. We also perform manual manipulation.

• Neck aches • TMJ/Jaw discomfort • Back problems • Tennis elbow • Carpal tunnel • Knee & leg pain

How does it work?

• Auto and sports injuries

The PulStar is both an analysis and a treatment system. It uses a hand-held impulse head, rich with sensors, connected to a sophisticated, proprietary software program. When the impulse head, which resembles a tuning fork, scans a patient’s spine, it can identify sources of joint restriction that can cause pain and muscle spasms over the entire length of the spine. Once the analysis is completed, the PulStar in its “adjust mode” delivers a series of gentle electro-mechanical impulses to relieve pain and restore normal joint function. DOCTOR AS

Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD SOMETIMES IT’S HARD TO CONNECT THE DOTS BETWEEN SYMPTOMS AND CAUSALITY When patients are in trauma with terrible depression, anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, chronic pain, cancer, infertility, neurological disorders, rapid aging, memory loss, skin issues or immobility, doctors are faced with multiple challenges. In a compromised mental and physical state, the patient needs comprehensive support, understanding, plans for rebuilding health suited to their situation with immediate relief when possible and long term goals. Early building of trust by developing a probable scenario of treatment, frequently at odds with usual drug-only treatments, is quite a skill. Cheerleading entails reiterating treatment goals, repeating rationales, cajoling for pure diets and lifestyles and commending patients for their successes and a job well done. It takes two to tango. WHY ARE YOU TREATING ME FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES WHEN I’M REALLY DEPRESSED AND FATIGUED? I am becoming more certain that many aspects of mental illness are related to infections. Why do previously high functioning, mentally healthy people of authority suddenly decompensate? Added stresses of grief and loss, acute illness, reemergence of childhood, marital and abusive history can unmask chronic infection. Lyme disease is fairly epidemic and causes horrible depression, bipolar disease, Lyme brain with poor focus and concentration, memory disorders, headaches and a host of physical symptoms from MS to Parkinson’s to asthma, RA and enlarged heart. My March article on Helicobacter pylori detailed many neurological and chronic psychiatric symptoms, from depression to schizophrenia, caused by these ancient bacteria that infect 50% of us. Viruses are very common and weaken our energy production, causing fatigue and depression. Epstein-barr virus is renowned for causing chronic fatigue and mononucleosis. Coxsackie virus can cause many heart symptoms and fatigue. After acute viral and bacterial infections, the recuperative period can be greatly shortened by adrenal gland support. Low cortisol levels create immune weakness just as does too much. We want to find the sweet spot in cortisol and adrenal hormones support. Candida albicans and other molds and fungi create toxins that cause a leaky gut, allowing food proteins and fecal toxins directly into the blood stream. These toxins produce a plethora of symptoms including allergy, brain fog and depression. Bloating and gas, especially when eating sugar and simple carbohydrates, is another sign of yeast overgrowth and should be taken seriously. Sugar and soda addiction is no joke. People become slaves to it, leading to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and fatigue. Herbal and medicinal approaches to reduce Candida levels along with dietary restriction are often quickly helpful for mood improvement.

Intestinal parasites are easy to come by in our diet from eating improperly prepared or contaminated food and when traveling in the third world. Many of the worms and amoeba cause intestinal upset, irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, and colitis or may be asymptomatic. Some parasites can also reside in muscles, organs and the brain, especially Trichinella spiralis, the pork worm, from undercooked pork. Again, the bowel connection can weaken the immune system and increase fatigue and depression. I HAVE JOINT AND MUSCLE PAIN. WHY TAKE VITAMIN C AND MAGNESIUM? One reason why people have chronic back and joint pain is that their ligaments become weak and lax. You can’t make ligaments and connective tissue without adequate amounts of vitamin C, which humans can’t generate. All animals except primates, Guinea pigs, fruit bats and man make their own vitamin C in their livers. It is also one of our principle antioxidants to reduce inflammation in the joints. Vitamin C has many important qualities and we should all take several thousand milligrams per day. When we are sick we can take very large doses without diarrhea. When the diarrhea hits, turn the dose back down. Magnesium is a mineral that is difficult to get in a SAD (standard American diet). Magnesium supports over 300 different enzymes systems in the body and keeps us away from heart attacks and strokes. It is also a great muscle relaxant, even for those with fibromyalgia - especially magnesium glycinate which

combines magnesium with glycine, the smallest amino acid to improve its absorption. WHO CARES ABOUT ROOT CANALS IN CANCER CASES? Root canals have been controversial for health since Weston Price, DDS book The Price of Root Canals was published in 1923. He took root canaled teeth from diseased patients, sewed them into the belly of a rabbit, which got the same symptoms as the patient or died in several days. George Meinig, DDS, dentist to the stars in Hollywood, also wrote about the damaging effects of root canaled teeth in his book The Root Canal Cover-up. Most recently Thomas

Levy, MD, JD, cardiologist from Denver, CO wrote The Toxic Tooth available from medfoxpub.com. He presents modern evidence that many diseases are the result of root canaled teeth. The teeth are dead and have no more immunity to defend themselves from toxic bacteria, which has been tracked in blood clots in heart attacks and strokes. The teeth are on one end of our acupuncture meridians which maintain the flow of electrical energy in our body. When you have a dead (root canaled) tooth on one end of the meridian it causes profound weakness in your system. The great German physician Joseph Issels, MD found all his cancer patients had at least two root canals and Jerry Tennant,

MD has presented powerful associations between root canals and cancer. Eight teeth are related to the breasts. It is fascinating to see heat pictures (thermography) demonstrate inflammation originating in the teeth, moving down the neck lymphatics and into the breasts. Teeth are a big deal in chronic and acute illness, especially when no other causes are obvious. Doctor as cheerleader comes with the job! FAT

in the Diet

No Longer a Bad Word!

Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

F

or decades, the “powers that be” said a “healthy” diet consisted of whole grains and other high carbohydrate foods. They formed the base of the “food pyramid”. Look at the people around you at an airport or event and see where that has taken us! Unfortunately, these recommendations couldn’t be further from the ideal path to a flat belly. A diet high in wheat and other grain products inevitably leads to chronically high blood sugar and poor sensitivity to insulin, which has been shown to be a major cause of abdominal fat accumulation and high cholesterol. The vicious cycle is the more abdominal fat you gain, the worse your insulin sensitivity becomes! On the other hand, fats are instrumental in the regulation of your overall hormonal balance, including many fat-burning hormones. When you replace the high carb items (grains, bread, and pasta) and start consuming healthy fats, you will be taking some big steps toward not only a flatter belly but a much healthier body and life style. It was in 1878 in England that a strange new disease was first documented in the medical literature. A patient of Dr. Adam Hammer was diagnosed with what we have come to know as a

12

“heart attack.” It was a very rare occurrence! What kinds of fat did people eat back then? The fats in common use were lard (pig fat), tallow (beef fat), butter, coconut, palm and olive oil. They did not have the technology to produce corn, soybean, safflower and most other polyunsaturated oils. So our ancestors, who never heard of “heart disease,” ate mostly animal fats which are loaded with cholesterol and saturated fat. The effects on their health were clearly evident- heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and numerous other “diseases of modern civilization” were rare! We have heard “cholesterol and saturated fat cause heart disease” for so long and so often that we can repeat it in our sleep. But do they really? Both history and medical science say “NO!” The cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease was first proposed in the 1950s by researcher Ancel Keys. Keys’ landmark study has since been found to be seriously flawed. He selected his data very carefully from six countries. Out of all his data, he only used those that supported his hypothesis. We have been stuck with the medical community’s acceptance of his theory ever since. There has never been a study demonstrating that high blood cholesterol causes heart disease. There has never been a study that proved the consumption of saturated fat causes high cholesterol. In fact, the opposite is true. Numerous studies have shown that cholesterol does not cause clogged arteries or heart disease. It is very interesting to note that sugar consumption started to become more common at the beginning of the 20th century and has steadily increased along with the rate of heart disease. It would seem that there is a much stronger correlation between heart disease and sugar consumption than with saturated fat or cholesterol! Actually what has been proven is that it is healthier to eat a larger amount of fats (coconut oil, butter, eggs, hemp oil and olive oil), a medium amount of protein (including animal protein) and a small amount of carbohydrates. T H E A RROGAN T

SYNDROME Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

I

have observed an interesting phenomenon in my psychotherapy practice the past few years. It involves single, older women who have come in for help with depression. Their depression is not the remarkable thing. What has caught my attention is that several of the women share similar stories of a negative relationship with their daughter. Basically, this daughter treats her mother like she is incapable and a burden. If a name is given to this phenomenon, the “Arrogant Daughter Syndrome” seems most appropriate. A composite sketch of the two main “players” in an “arrogant daughter syndrome” would have the following features. The mother is usually in her sixties when the dynamic first appears. She is retired and unattached, typically by divorce. Her former husband, the father of her daughter, was emotionally abusive and denigrating of his wife when they were married. She is of sound mind and quite capable of managing her own affairs, although she may exhibit some mild memory issues. She often lives near enough to her daughter that she is counted on to provide childcare and transportation to her grandchildren. Frequently, she worked in a helping profession such as nursing, teaching, or another human service field.

“The American poet Sylvia Plath (1932–1963) acknowledged that the poem Daddy (1962) is about a woman, afflicted with an unresolved Electra complex, who conflates her dead father and derelict husband in dealing with having been emotionally abandoned.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electra_complex Van Dyne, Susan R. She may have a modest income but is self-supporting. Her self-esteem may be diminished and she often has difficulty being assertive. In relation to her daughter, she may feel incompetent, inadequate, and a burdensome annoyance.

She may even, consciously or unconsciously, orchestrate events in such a way as to make her mother appear incompetent or stupid. She feels that providing childcare to her kids and/or pets should be calling enough for her aging and less financially secure parent.

in young girls and termed it the “Electra Complex” based upon the Greek myth of Electra and her efforts to have her brother Orestes kill their mother. These complexes, which are resolved in most children at a young age, can also lie dormant and reassert themselves later in life. This tendency may be even more likely if the daughter saw her father treating her mother with a lack of respect and love while she was growing up. A tentative peace between mother and daughter may be disturbed later in life when the daughter sees an opportunity to outcompete her mother, this time for the kudos and approval of mainstream society.

The daughter in this scenario often has the following characteristics. Sigmund Freud gave the term She is usually in her forties when “Oedipus Complex” to the tendency the dynamic develops. She is wellof a small boy to develop aggressive educated and has a job that offers feelings towards his father and a desire more status and income, comparatively, to win away from him his mother’s than the career her mother had. Or, affection and commitment. Carl Jung alternatively, she has a husband who observed a parallel dynamic to occur provides this lifestyle and status to her. She has young children for whom she must secure daycare. Between Her daughter’s arrogance, hurtful and work, children, shopping, etc., she unwelcome though it may be, can be a is overly busy. Nonetheless, she gift if properly addressed. e now know that emotional health is critical to physical health. No matter how devoted you are to the proper diet and lifestyle, you’re unlikely to achieve optimal health if emotional challenges stand in your way. Energy psychology uses an acupressure technique based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture, which has been used to treat physical and emotional ailments for over 5,000 years, but without the use of needles. EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE (EFT) is the most popular form of energy psychology today and was developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineering graduate specializing in healing and self-improvement. This method involves tapping specific points on your upper body with your own fingertips while stating aloud your specific problem – be it a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc., then voicing positive affirmations. The combination of tapping certain points on the energy meridians while voicing negative, then positive phrases works to clear the emotional blocks from your body’s bioenergy system, thus restoring your mind-to-body balance.

16

Clinical trials have shown that EFT is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger distress. Once the distress is reduced or removed, your body can rebalance itself, thereby reducing anxiety and accelerating healing. EFT has actually met the criteria for evidence-based treatments set by the American Psychological Association for a number of conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder. This research found that EFT significantly increased positive emotions, such as hope and joy, while decreasing negative emotional states like anger and shame. This technique has been researched in more than 10 countries, by more than 60 investigators, whose results have been published in more than 20 different

INTRODUCING

Facelift®, Breast Lift®, Facial® & O-Shot®, Priapus Shot®, and Hair Treatment Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O. Remember when we were kids, fell and scraped our knee or elbow? After the tears, Mom put mercurochrome or Absorbine, Jr on it, a Popeye the Sailor band-aid and told us to leave it alone. Several days later a yellow “goo” formed around the scab. The “goo,” known as platelet-rich fibrin matrix, (PRFM), is the body’s way of healing itself. 1 Eventually new skin, containing all its components, collagen, fat, nerves and blood vessels grows to replace the scraped skin. The key to the healing, the “goo,” consists of multipotent stem cells. These are cells lying dormant, until called upon, to repair damaged tissue. Multipotent stem cells can only replace, not generate, tissue. Omnipotent stem cells, the seeds of Frankenstein, theoretically, are capable of growing entire organisms. 2 Before continuing - to be clear - we are not dealing with anything even touching these ethical and political minefields. (Dolly, the famous “cloned” sheep came about from adult stem cells, not embryonic as popularly thought.)3 Some stem cells regenerate tissue better than others. Multipotent stem cells in your skin replace the skin lost on your scraped elbow. Brain tissue, when damaged, is poorly regenerated by neural multipotent stem cells. Pancreatic stem cells are a bit more successful in regenerating the pancreas and liver stem cells regrow cirrhotic liver tissue. The PRFM contains at least seven types of cell, blood vessel, collagen and tissue growth factors. Through modern technology, with a simple blood draw and specialized centrifugation, we can harvest these stem cells to perform an amazing array of rejuvenation activities.4

18

We use Emcyte, the gold standard for platelet separation centrifugation. By carefully separating the platelets from the red cells of the blood, we obtain the aforementioned growth factors. If we were to include the red blood cells in our technique, it would cause undue pain, inflammation and bruising.

American Cosmetic Cellular Medicine Association.

Once the platelets are isolated, we need to create the platelet-rich fibrin matrix. By following the phenomena of the “goo,” how does the knee know it needs its stem cells? We see excess calcium levels in the wounded tissue as opposed to normal structures. Calcium activates the chemical process, causing the platelets to form a clot, release growth factors, and turn the watery platelets into the yellow gel.

The Vampire Facial® is similar, but uses a microdermabrasion needling technique to enhance the “goo’s” penetration into the skin, rather than the hyaluronic acid fillers.

By adding calcium to our platelet solution, we are recreating our childhood scrape “goo.” If we inject the activated platelets after the calcium is added, but before it turns into the gel, we can remold the face, breast, and genital areas with fantastic results. The Vampire Facelift®, Vampire Breast Lift®, OShot®, Priapus Shot®, Hair Treatment, and Vampire Facial® are specific, patented techniques I have trained and been certified in by the

The Vampire Facelift® sculpts the face using hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane to reshape your naturally beauty. We then “polish” the sculpture with our “gel” to improve color, texture and size.

The Vampire Breastlift®: Tired, worn and droopy is no way to go through life describing your breasts. Unfortunately, as we age, the perky, rosy hue of youth fades to a dull shade of gray. Just as in the face, volume is added via dermal filler to all the “right places.” We then polish and refine the shape of the breast using our platelet-rich plasma (PRP) “goo,” resulting in younger-looking breasts with improved skin quality, color, texture and sensitivity. Breast implants and surgery are classically necessary to lift and enlarge the breast in an effort to restore a more youthful appearance. However, implants and surgical breast lifts can lead to a rippled appearance and nipple numbness. The Vampire Breast Lift™

strives to bring volume to droopy, worn or sagging breasts, improve nipple sensitivity, texture, color and integrity of the breast. The O Shot® for gals and the P Shot® for guys are absolute game changers when it comes to improving sensitivity, intensity and ease of orgasm. Female sexual dysfunction is no small problem. 43% of adult women (and 31 % of adult men) experience some degree of libido and dysfunctional sexual performance.6 Our practice certainly sees a skewed population, but closer to 80-90% of our patients are so afflicted. For women, vaginal lubrication and a ‘side effect,’ improvement in urinary incontinence, are added bonuses when it comes to sexual arousal and renewal. OShot® effects are frequently noticed immediately as the growth factors rejuvenate and enhance sexual response. Not to be left out, The P Shot® delivers lasting improvements in sexual performance to men, restores function due to prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, the aftereffects of surgery, drug side effects and other conditions such as diabetes. After applying topical and local anesthetics, the “goo” is injected, resulting in tissue growth, new blood vessel growth and improved penile circulation. Some guys report up to a 1015% increase in girth and length, stronger erections, increased sensation and pleasure, and enhanced sexual performance.

“THE “GOO,” KNOWN AS PLATELET-RICH FIBRIN MATRIX, (PRFM), IS THE BODY’S WAY OF HEALING ITSELF.”

Stress, continued from page 20 mantra since the 1960s. Adrenal Glandulars, B Vitamins, Adaptocrine Herbs and certain minerals are all attempts to return the adrenals to normal function.

SPONSE STRESS RE

However, the adrenals are not the problem. The true problem lies in the brain stress pathways and general brain degeneration (wear and tear, inflammation). The adrenals themselves are simply cortisol (stress hormone) factories, putting out stress hormones in response to directions from the brain. Chronic stress causes them to over-produce cortisol, bombarding both the brain and the body with stress hormones. The adrenals may become over-exhausted from wear and tear, unable to make enough cortisol. (The body needs not too much or too little cortisol but just the right amount) Then the body cannot muster enough energy (because the adrenals work to make energy too) to respond to even mild life chemical or pathological stressors such as a common viral infection or a bad day at work, and fatigue sets in. Although there are times when adrenal glands indeed need and respond (temporarily) to nutritional support, it is better to address the true core cause – that is, to strengthen and support brain function and slow, if present, brain degeneration. Treating the brain will relieve the over-activation of the adrenals and a number of other neurological imbalances at the same time. How does one do that? Our mentor taught us to first look at poor brain endurance and its causes. Is that person getting enough Omega 3s or Methyl B-12? Do you have low serotonin or GABA (neurotransmitter chemicals that calm your brain down)? Do you have anemia (the brain needs enough O2 not to get stressed or degenerated) or do you have blood sugar imbalances (the brain needs blood sugar to work, but just the right amount – kind of like cortisol)? Or do you just need to calm down. Easier said than done. But on a practical level, maybe your brain just needs more of the proper type of stimulation – such as walking outside, engaging in social activities, working on intellectually stimulating problems, making more time for yourself or more gentle exercises and less of the detrimental stimulations: overly full activity schedules, too much television, iPhone, computer time and too little sleep. These are legitimate baseline lifestyle strategies that may help. If these stress strategies are not sufficient for your level of brain stress, then it may be appropriate to move on to the next “level” of addressing brain stress mechanisms. Should these levels of care not calm the overwrought or fatigued adrenals, then and only then should you turn to the next level of care. This approach starts with the adrenal adaptogens. Although they are called adrenal adaptogens, these herbs do not work on the adrenal glands, but instead on the stress pathways in the brain (the correct target), particularly the hippocampus (short term memory loss, circadian rhythm, poor sleep area, and off button for the stress cycle). Starting to see the “non-adrenal first” pattern? Even the herbs that work best address the brain. These adaptogens include ashwagandha, Panax Ginsing, Rhodiola Rosea, Holy Basil Extract, and Eleuthero Extract. These are all powerful botanicals that impact brain chemistry and brain pathology stress responses in a positive way. Some work better for one person than another and for some others these botanicals will have a greater effect when used in combination. It is best to consult a professional on this point. Should you continue to experience “stress” symptoms after this step, then proceeding to herbal and nutritional compounds for brain inflammation (extremely common) can offer further support and improvement. Addressing brain inflammation should be considered especially if in addition to classic adrenal fatigue or stress symptoms you are experiencing brain fog or have some other systemic inflammation (i.e., gut, burning nerves, autoimmune problems). If your entire body is inflamed you may also have aches and pains everywhere as an indicator of systemic inflammation affecting brain function.

22

Chronic stress hormonal responses can also cause constriction of blood vessels, leading to poor oxygenation of the brain. The brain needs proper stimulation, lack of inflammation, proper glucose (not discussed in this article but refers to hypoglycemic insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, syndrome x, pre-diabetes, diabetes 1, 2, and now 3) and proper oxygenation to heal and function well. Oxygenation to the brain can be affected by anemias, COPD, asthma, bronchitis, heart failure, and chronic stress, thus impairing the brain’s rest and digest system and causing the brain to overstimulate and produce inflammation. When any of these situations occur, the adrenals take the hit. But these impairments, not the adrenals, should be the focus of treatment first. Strategies to reduce the stress response, dampen brain inflammation, and support blood flow to the brain, in conjunction with supporting brain health and brain activity, have the potential to halt the nosedive into escalating brain degeneration and to restore healthy adrenal function. For those who knowingly lead stressful lives but are not in a position to change things, taking adrenal (and even brain) nutritional compounds can help buffer the effects of a stressful schedule and thus help prevent brain inflammation, degeneration, and fatigue. But those compounds for the adrenals (and brain) cannot create long term results in the presence of, or make up for, a poor diet, blood sugar imbalances, and food intolerances. A good diet is critical. They also cannot make up for a lifestyle or career that is creating excessive mental and emotional stress. Stress inducing lifestyles must be modified for best results. Only then can the overstimulated brain calm down and give your adrenals the opportunity to recover. can afford to shop this way, it certainly is not ideal for those of us shopping on a budget. Shopping organic on a budget isn’t always easy. It takes time to familiarize yourself with certain organic products, and the places you can find them locally. Here are some tips on how to get started:

6. Buy organic meats and animal byproducts. Livestock raised on conventional farms are often given antibiotics and recombinant growth hormones. These become present in the conventional beef, pork, and poultry we eat, along with the eggs, milk, and cheese that we get from these animals. Farmed fish are also a red flag as contaminants can be found in the food they are fed; buy wild-caught fish instead.

7. Purchase bulk items. Some stores have larger selections than others, but most contain essential foods that have high nutrient densities, like oats, whole grains, beans, nuts, rice, and snacks like trail mix and dried fruits.

8. Save food, save money! Store your food so that it stays fresh, and learn recipes for leftover meals.

9. Browse coupons and use them! Coupons for natural and organic products are easy to find online, and many stores include them in their print newsletters and catalogues.

10. Buy organic if it doesn’t have a peel. Many fruits and vegetables are full of pesticides and other dangerous chemicals, even after they are washed. Generally, produce with a peel, rind, husk or protective outer layer is less likely to be affected by pesticides and harsh chemical fertilizers.

11. Shop seasonally. Learn which fruits and vegetables are harvested during certain times of the year. In the fall, think root vegetables: potatoes, carrots, zucchinis, squash and corn.

Understanding How It Can IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH Written by Diane Underwood

I

n 1933, microbiologist and inventor Royal Rife released his Universal Microscope. Rife applied light waves, radio, megahertz, or electrical frequencies to E.coli, tuberculosis, and viruses to observe cellular responses prior to his release. In doing so, he discovered that bacteria and viruses had a MOR (Mortal Oscillatory Rate), or specific cellular explosion, that would explode the microbial cell wall. The next step was to test the MOR in blood cells in order to try to kill the invaders. Rife manufactured a beam ray light generator to tune in to the subjects’ MOR. There are many Rife machines on the market today that are geared toward most diseases. Cells, water, food, herbs and air can be transformed organically via electrical energy fields. Strobing patterns or pulses can be therapeutically rhythmical and enhance the pulsating magnetic fields as can be found in a back stimulator for pain relief, also introduced by Rife. Fluorescent lights flicker a high hazardous EMF (electromagnetic field), at times so disruptive one can hear the buzz. Actually the buzz is the electricity zapping the mercury in the tube of deadly gases. Florescent lights are outlawed in other countries, especially in hospitals, as they are endocrine disruptors. NASA spent billions on discovering nm (nanometers) light frequencies (biotechnology) to grow plants without the UV and infrared light from the sun. They found that pulsating 670nm (nanometer) red, 470nm blue and near infrared could recreate photosynthesis. Some scientists reported many benefits such as hair growth and improved skin and immune function. Hence the popularly-named photo-facial, red laser hair growth, or infrared hyperthermia (raising body core temp) to activate circulation, metabolism and capillary osmotic cleansing via perspiration. Similarly, bioelectromagnetics or PMEF (Pulsed Magnetic Energy Field) pads are being utilized in many medical therapies for pain, energy, circulation and REM sleep programs. Top recovery clinics use PMEF pads which assist bone healing for a 50% improved recovery time. Many individuals report sleep, pain, anxiety, energy, and auto immune benefits with proper usage, to name just a few. shown that yoga is only growing in popularity. While some men and women over 50 may feel their time to take up yoga has passed, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, yoga can pay numerous dividends for the over 50 crowd.

Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a potentially dangerous condition that makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body. Hypertension contributes to a hardening of the arteries known as atherosclerosis, and can even contribute to the development of heart failure. A person's risk of developing hypertension increases as he or she ages, so it's important that men and women over 50 take steps to reduce their risk of hypertension, and yoga can help them do just that. A normal blood pressure is 120 over 80, but people with hypertension often have blood pressure readings of 140 and above over 90 and above. Studies have shown that yoga can reduce the top number, which is referred to as the systolic blood pressure. In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, researchers found that men and women who practiced yoga for six hours a week for 11 weeks reduced their systolic blood pressure by 33 points. The study's authors feel that the slow, controlled breathing that's essential to practicing yoga decreases nervous system activity, helping the body manage its blood pressure levels.

Yoga promotes strong bones. Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which tissue loss leads to brittle and fragile bones. Aging is a significant risk factor for osteoporosis, and women are at even greater risk than men. The National Osteoporosis Foundation notes that women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass in the five to seven years after menopause, so it's important that women (and men) take steps to strengthen their bones. The nature of yoga makes it an ideal activity to promote healthy bones. Because it is a weight-bearing exercise, yoga forces practitioners to hold the weight of their bodies up against gravity. This resistance to gravity puts mild stress on the bones, which respond by laying down new bone growth. But unlike other weightbearing activities, such as jogging or walking, yoga does not damage cartilage or put stress on the joints. The AARP notes that studies have indicated the weight-bearing activity of yoga can be especially effective at reducing the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Yoga helps practitioners maintain healthy weights. While yoga may not help men and women shed weight as effectively as more vigorous activities, it can help them maintain healthy weights. Many men and women over 50 find vigorous or strenuous physical activity too demanding, and might not be able to perform such activities with the frequency necessary to prevent weight gain. But while yoga is physically demanding, those who practice yoga often find it takes a smaller toll on their bodies than more traditional strength training. Another way yoga can help to maintain a healthy weight is through its relation to stress. Yoga can help to relieve stress, and lower stress levels reduce the likelihood that men and women will overeat, which is a common response to elevated stress levels.

Though yoga might not have been popular when today's men and women over 50 were in their 20s and 30s, that does not mean such men and women cannot take advantage of the numerous physical and mental benefits yoga has to offer.
