y family is comprised of my husband and 3 adopted dogs aged 2, 4 and 13, and every one of them are ridiculously sweet and empathetic in their own ways. Larry has a thing about sneezes – when you sneeze, he runs over and throws himself in your lap, often wrapping his front legs around you, laying his head on your chest. He closes his eyes and rests there for as long as he feels you need at that particular moment. This is often followed up with lots of kisses, for good measure. I was recently made aware of a retreat in Canada that allows people to visit for a spiritual, transformational session with horses. What a beautiful idea! The sensitivity of horses is well known by almost anyone who has ever been in the presence of them. In addition to offering a unique healing experience, they also offer Equinistic Healing Certification. Pet Partners, a national therapy animal organization, certifies many different animals to interact with a variety of clients, including veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimers, people with literacy challenges or intellectual disabilities, and those in recovery or nearing the end of their lives. According to their website, therapy animals include dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, pigs, birds, llamas and alpacas, guinea pigs and even rats. While I’m not trying to claim that animals have mystical healing powers, I do believe that they can affect us psychologically and physiologically, as well. Some of the benefits animals are credited with providing are: • Lowering blood pressure and stress

Locally, there are at least two hospitals that integrate their treatment with pet therapy. Renown Health has 14 registered and certified pet therapy dogs and share some of their success stories on Pinterest . Carson Tahoe Health allows service dogs in all areas except the ICU/CVU and the ED core. If you have a dog that you think might make a good therapy animal, CTH requires owners attend orientation, have all required medical testing, proof of vaccinations for their canine and meet with their infection control department. The process takes about 3 weeks or so, and if all works out, the owner and pup are then scheduled for visits. You can find their volunteer application online . A study published in the American Journal of Cardiology reported that men who had suffered from heart attacks improved their survival rate by owning a dog. There is also research currently being conducted regarding the vibrations of a cat’s purr helping to reduce muscular aches, pains and inflammation. Would you like to form a deeper healing connection with your pet? Here are seven ideas for strengthening those bonds:

Talk to your Pet.

1

Speaking to your pet can help you feel understood and provide comfort, and can also help your pet feel included in your day. We talk to our dogs constantly, and joke (with more than a little truth) that they are now at the point where they understand satirical humor.

• Helping those suffering from the loss of a loved one • Helping people cope with (and, in some instances, detect or forewarn of) cancers and other diseases • Higher survival rates for people with coronary heart disease

2 Promote physical contact with your pet:

Being close to your pet is one thing, but actually having physical contact is quite another. Touching and petting an animal has been linked with several health benefits associated with blood pressure and stress relief.

Looking for treats for other types of pets? Here are some great resources for homemade pet treats. We haven’t tried these, so please read the ingredients carefully, to make sure they’re safe for your beloved furry (or feathered) friend.

Play with your pet: Interaction with animals

boosts the hormone oxytocin, which helps promote love and trust within relationships . Studies also show that, at least for dogs, when they make eye contact with you, they get a blast of that happinessproducing hormone, too!

Include your pet as a member of the family. Your pets very often want to be with you, so whenever safe and possible, include them in your family activities. Ours love to go camping in the mountains, where we often camp with other friends and their dogs.

Exercise with your pet. Growing up in northern Michigan, I used to walk in the woods with many of our animals, including dogs, cats, goats, turkeys and our little black lamb, Frisbeedingle. Having a companion join you on walks can not only be a smart safety move, but can increase your motivation and help you with your fitness goals.

Be the one who comes to their rescue.

In addition to avoiding costly vet bills, being aware of what’s going on with your pet, and knowing when they’re acting “off” helps you reassure them and let them know that you are there to protect them.

Feed them the best food possible.

Research what is safe and best for your pet, and make their treats yourself, if possible. For one of our favorite healthy dog treats, please see our recipe on pg. 24.

I know that many of you have read this article, nodding and recalling your own healing experiences with animals. Please email me at editor@hbmag.com or share your stories (we also welcome your photos!) on our Facebook page at facebook.com/HBMagazine. I look forward to hearing from you!

& THE AFTERLIFE

understand that they are “dead,” and that their home is now in another realm. This may have been the situation with Kody, for in the dreams he was inhabiting the home space much as he had before his death. He did not give the impression of moving on or of saying goodbye.

Following a dream of this kind, it can be helpful to return to the dream space with your waking mind and dialogue with your pet or other loved one. Say whatever you might want to say, and be open to any responses from them that spontaneously come forth. If you feel it appropriate, you may need to inform them that they are no longer of this earth, that their body has died, and that their spirit is called — or will soon be called — elsewhere. With Kody, I imagined taking him to a forest meadow we used to go to when he was younger. I imagined his siblings and other dogs there. I gave him a final hug goodbye Following death, it is and told him I would see him again someday. A BAD BUG ~ H. pylori ~ Beyond Ulcers Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

S

everal years ago I read that H. pylori can cause Acne rosacea and a host of other diseases as well as stomach and duodenal ulcers. Rosacea is the red face and nose that many people live with. Helicobacter pylori is a spiral shaped bacteria that is best known to cause stomach and duodenal ulcers and was first described in the late 1970s1. It caused uproar at the time because GI doctors always thought that ulcer disease was a result of stress and hyperacidity. Now the new cause of peptic ulcer disease is H. pylori and treated with stomach acid blockers and antibiotics. Usual diagnosis is made by breath analysis, blood tests, stool examination or direct biopsy.

The depth of research in this infection is truly overwhelming and I hope the reader will have a higher index of suspicion in seeking and treating this universal hidden plague.

H. pylori is a widely prevalent microbe with nearly 50% of the western world and over 80% of those living in developing countries infected. (Plate 1) Only 15% to 20% of infected people have symptoms of peptic ulcer disease. Its prevalence is associated with socio-economic status, water contamination, sharing of eating utensils and food quality. The bacteria has an amazing ability to persist in infected individuals for decades and has co-existed with humans since they migrated out of Africa 60,000 years ago2.

2. Linz B, et al. An African origin for the intimate association between humans and Helicobacter pylori. Nature. 2007: 445:915-918

H. pylori, Cognition and Neurological Syndromes Not only does H. pylori work on disrupting autoimmune regulation via cytokines, interleukins, humoral and cell mediated reactions, it also plays a powerful role in the modulation of hormones, neurotransmitters, demyelination and blood brain barrier disruption5. This infection has been well documented to be associated with depression, schizophrenia, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, cognitive decline, other neurological diseases, gastrointestinal motility disorders, lymphoma and vitamin and nutrient malabsorption.

Integrative Approaches for H. pylori Treatment My first interest in H. pylori aside from GI issues was Rosacea. With our advantage of rapid diagnosis via EAV (electroacupuncture by Vol) and the Bio-Meridian computer, assessment and treatment response became immediately available. My favorite treatment has been with Pyloricil (Trademark Orthomolecular Products) containing mastic gum (guar gum) extract 250 mg, Berberine sulfate hydrate 150 mg, bismuth citrate 125 mg and zinc carnosine 37.5 mg per capsule. Dose is one capsule twice per day. If it does not test well or if the H. pylori seems to no longer be responsive I use Mastic Gum/ DGL from Complementary Prescriptions with deglyccyrrhizinated licorice (Glycyrrhiza 300 mg glabra) root and rhizome extract, with Gum mastic ( Pistacia lentiscus resin extract). Chew one to two wafers as needed. I usually suggest twice per day and usually see resolution or good improvement in about one month. There are many other herbal and alternative treatments for H. pylori from around the world6. 8

Auto Immune Disease Associated with H. pylori H. pylori infection has been implicated in a variety of diseases not related to the GI tract. Skin disease association includes the following3, 4:

• SYSTEMIC SCLEROSIS (systemic scleroderma, a thickening of all the capillaries)

• ROSACEA: H. pylori can increase the level of nitrous oxide in the blood or tissue contributing to the flushing and erythema of rosacea.

• ATOPIC DERMATITIS (also known as atopic eczema, is a type of inflammation of the skin (dermatitis). It results in itchy, red, swollen, and cracked skin).

• CHRONIC URTICARIA (hives): Several studies have found a link between H. pylori and chronic urticaria. It is thought that the infection increases the permeability of the intestinal lining and exposure to allergens and also produces antibodies that may increase the release of histamine in the skin.

• BEHCET DISEASE ( triple-symptom complex of recurrent oral aphthous ulcers, genital ulcers, and uveitis, eye inflammation).

• PSORIASIS: H. pylori may be one of the organisms capable of triggering the inflammatory response in psoriasis. (rough, dry, cracked skin) • SJORGEN SYNDROME: H. pylori may induce an autoimmune reaction to the skin and glands causing Sjorgren syndrome. (dry eyes and mouth) • HENOCH-SCHONLEIN PURPURA (purple bruising of skin especially on the buttocks and lower extremities) • ALOPECIA AREATA (patchy hair loss) • SWEET DISEASE (a rare skin condition)

• NODULAR PRURIGO (itchy nodules which appear on the arms and legs) • IMMUNE THROMBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA (autoimmune low platelet count with bruising) • LICHEN PLANUS (a disease of the skin or mucous membranes that resembles lichen) • APTHOUS ULCERATION (mouth sores) It has been speculated that H pylori infection may be responsible for various endocrine disorders, such as autoimmune thyroid diseases, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol and trigylcerides), obesity, osteoporosis and primary hyperparathyroidism5

• GENERALIZED PRURITIS (itching)

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY! Treating Multiple Sclerosis With Medical Marijuana

L

ocal Sparks resident, Mary Webber, writes an inspirational blog called “A Better Life,” regarding her journey to wellness and her experiences treating her Multiple Sclerosis with Medical Marijuana. Having been diagnosed over 8 years ago, she has only recently come to feel the difference between standing on a carpet and a hardwood floor, feeling the skin between her fingers and toes, or, when putting her hair up, feeling her own ears. All of this, thanks to medical marijuana.

Approximately 350,000 Americans are currently living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic, debilitating, degenerative and sometimes fatal disease, in which the body’s own immune cells attack the central nervous system, resulting in a host of symptoms, including pain, muscular weakness and spasms, fatigue, tremor, incontinence and loss of motor coordination, as well as unstable mood and depression. According to the U.S. National Multiple Sclerosis Society, about 200 people are diagnosed with MS every week. It typically appears between the ages of 20 and 40, and is the most common neurological disease of young people, affecting both women and veterans at a higher incidence than the general population. Current treatment for MS largely focuses only on treating symptoms of the disease as they appear, with combinations of medications that can often cause adverse or unwanted side effects. Frustrated patients often turn to alternative and holistic treatments, seeking a more natural and cost-effective remedy. There are numerous indications that Cannabinoids, one of the active ingredients in Medical Marijuana, may be a successful means of therapy for the many symptoms of MS and a promising treatment for controlling the diseases progression, as well. Despite the myth that little research has been done on medical marijuana, numerous case studies, double-blind studies, and surveys have been done in the UK and Canada to determine the efficacy of cannabis in treating MS. A 2003 survey published in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences reported that 96

10

percent of MS patients state cannabis is therapeutically useful for treating their disease. A 2005 UK Survey of MS patients found that 43% already used Marijuana to treat their disease. Of those patients, the majority reported their chronic pain, spasms and depression were effectively mitigated. Another study published in the Lancet journal compared results of 630 multiple sclerosis patients after approximately 4 months of treatment. The 57% of patients using a whole plant cannabis extract said their symptoms had eased. By studying mice, researchers have discovered the role of CB1 and CB2, our cannabinoid receptors, in regulating CNS autoimmune inflammation and other factors that contribute to MS symptoms. Studies suggest that cannabis may slow the neurodegenerative processes that ultimately lead to chronic disability for MS patients. In 2012, Spanish researchers documented that “the treatment of EAE mice with the cannabinoid agonist WIN55,512-2 reduced their neurological disability and the progression of the disease.” These studies of both animal models and patients have greatly expanded our understanding of MS and cannabinoid biology. Current and emerging research suggests that Medical Marijuana has the potential to effectively treat MS symptoms and may also slow the progression of the disease. So what does this mean to patients today? The bottom line is that the treatment of MS with Medical Marijuana is still new, largely trial-and-error, and requires patience and the help of cannabis experts. The good news is that it is now available to those who have decided, in consult with a physician, that it is a good option for them. Mary Webber spent over seven years gradually losing 70% of the feeling in her feet, hands and other areas of her body, and temporarily losing much of the sight from her right eye. regimen, and spasticity that was severely impeding her way of life. At the end of her rope, with traditional medicine helping very little she, through trial and error with help from Sierra Wellness Connection, found a strain of Medical Marijuana that addressed her symptoms significantly. In the days following, as she continued to use that strain, her feet woke up even more. After about two months her numbness has been significantly reduced, she can walk and move better with less pain, and she’s been able to stop the epidurals, as well as most other prescribed medications, which she credits for her being able to think clearly again. Her blog, bright smile, and positive attitude are an inspiration to others, and she is now a patient advocate for cannabis therapy. Medical Marijuana has given Mary the ability to achieve something we all strive for and deserve, the pursuit of happiness and “A Better Life!” If you are suffering the effects of MS, or wonder if Medical Marijuana can help any other issues you may be experiencing, please contact Sierra Wellness Connection at 775-473-9994 to talk to one of their expert consultants. Fatigue, Depression, & Gastrointestinal Problems

and the Overlooked Brain Connection Written by Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

L

ast month we posited that almost no one pays attention to abnormal brain function and its role in chronic pain, beyond giving a diet, herb, or drug for “adrenal stress” or depression and anxiety. The brain degenerative concept of negative neuroplasticity is rarely addressed. In fact, three of the more common outcomes of brain degeneration are fatigue, depression, and gastrointestinal problems. Chronic fatigue syndrome is always, at least in part, brain based. As the brain degenerates, brain cells develop poor endurance for ordinary tasks. For instance, reading causes fatigue, as does driving, or being in a loud or noisy restaurant, watching an action movie with lots of quick flashing lights and constant screen changes and the drama of the movie. Various inputs to the brain overwhelm the degenerated and exhausted neurons so that they fatigue quickly. Consequently, the brain’s output to the rest of the body is compromised and the entire body fatigues as well. In addition to “adrenal” fatigue, gut infections (H-Pylori that causes ulcers, yeast, parasites, S.I.B.O.), high or low blood sugar, leaky gut, food sensitivities (yes, gluten), vitamin D deficiencies, B-12 deficiencies, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, and mitochondrial dysfunction – the list goes on – cause degeneration. The brain needs proper glucose, oxygen, a lack of inflammation (immune or otherwise), and proper stimulation in order to prevent degeneration. So poor brain chemistry and even a tiny bit of stimulation to a brain equals CRASHING, or in this case, FATIGUE. From a neurological perspective, depression is now being tied to over-activation of the fear center of the brain and underactivation of the memory area of the brain, resulting in a “tugof-war.” In the case of depression the fear center, kept in check by the frontal lobes, is winning. We know that men need sufficient testosterone and women need sufficient estrogen for good frontal lobe function. A

12

deficiency in these hormones alone can cause depression. Neuro-chemicals called neurotransmitters significantly influence frontal lobe function. If these neurochemicals are not functioning properly, then that can cause depression, but there are many other factors can affect the frontal lobe’s ability to build positive neuroplasticity. There are also instances of new brain cells grown in the memory area of the brain, allowing it to shut off the fear center. Chronic gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion, acid reflux, constipation, burping, gas, bloating, pain, diarrhea, or irritable bowel syndrome are a third common clinical presentation of brain degeneration. When gastrointestinal problems seem to be irresolvable, breakdowns in brain function should be considered. In fact some scientists are now questioning whether we should term Irritable Bowel Syndrome “Irritable Brain Syndrome” due to the fact that the majority of factors that are wrong with IBS patients are neurologically based rather than fecal problems in the gut. Your brain outputs normal communication to the body through the brainstem constantly, controlling vital functions to keep you alive. The output occurs via the vagus nerve which branches out like roots of a plant from your brainstem to your intestines. When the brain is poorly functioning due to degeneration and inflammation, or over functioning due to a chronic fight or flight syndrome (which is separate from the vagus and causes a stressful chemical reaction in the gut), output through the brainstem in the vagus is lower and thus so is its firing rate, which can cause poor digestion, constipation, and an inability to digest many foods. This is the patient who has advanced dietary knowledge, eats a gut healing diet, takes digestive enzymes and other digestive herbs and nutrients, had lab panels done to assess the health of the digestive tract and yet nothing brings relief. If this is you – look to the brain. These are just three of dozens of conditions that become chronic because this symbiotic connection between the brain and the body is generally ignored. In general when brain function improves through specific brain exercises and eliminating blood sugar imbalances, immune inflammation, and decreasing stress hormones, it’s also common to see many of a person’s other bodily functions improve, including increased energy, motivation, and better relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. See you next month with more on the symbiotic co-dependency of the brain and the gut, and the immune and endocrine systems. PERCEPTIONS a l l Is no t as It s eems

A

s a follow-up to our article on advertising and media manipulation entitled Trust Me They’re Lying, it seems appropriate to mention a few additional areas where we may be unaware of what’s going on behind the scenes.

To begin with, we live in a world with an incredible imbalance of power. A tiny fraction of our world population has the means to manipulate and sway public opinion in order to maintain their ability to control and profit off the rest of us. It only makes sense that any group who had the wherewithal to successfully maneuver their way to the top would naturally want to hold that position. We need to be able to spot that manipulation and know it for what it is. This is a magazine about health – emotional, physical, psychological and mental. We cannot be healthy in any of those ways if we are uninformed or if our perception of reality is skewed by forces with ulterior motives. So the more we look into it, the clearer it becomes that mainstream “wisdom” is not as logical, sound or reasonable as it first appears. Propaganda today is so highly sophisticated, outrageously pervasive and incredibly subtle and cunning, that it can be difficult to not fall prey to what they’re pushing. So how do we see through the smoke and mirrors to the real truth? Be aware of where we place our attention and focus. Avoid the many low-frequency media and social distractions that dance hypnotically around us. Consciously focus on what we do want and therefore raise the vibrational frequency of our thoughts and emotions. Nurture that which we do want.

Eat Fat and

LOSE WEIGHT... Coconut Oil is the Way to Go

Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

S

ounds too good to be true but it’s not! What is also true is that it’s the carbohydrates that make you fat.

Other studies have shown that lab animals given coconut oil lived longer and developed fewer diseases than those given soybean, corn or other vegetable oils.

Most of us have tried dieting at least once in our lives. We have been told “low fat,” “Non-fat” or “Low calorie” is the only way to lose our excess pounds.

Coconut oil has been described as the “World’s Healthiest Dietary Oil.” There is a huge amount of historical evidence and medical research to verify this statement.

Our grandparents got about 40% of their daily calories from fat. Today we consume significantly less than that. We’ve replaced saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats and fake fats. We eat more low-fat, low calorie foods now than ever before, yet we are fatter now than ever before. Why is that? The simple answer is that low-fat diets don’t work! They’re not natural, they’re not healthy, and in the long run they promote weight gain, not weight loss! Research proves this. The Framingham study, the longest running study ever made on the relationship between diet and health began in 1948 and is still going on today. After more than 40 years of research on over 5,000 people, the director admitted “the more saturated fat, cholesterol and calories a person ate, the lower the serum cholesterol they had. The people who ate the most fat, weighed the least.” Coconut oil is a highly saturated fat. For years saturated fat was believed to increase blood cholesterol, which in turn, was believed to promote heart disease. A number of recent medical studies have proven this to be false. In fact, coconut oil possesses superior nutritional qualities over other oils and, when added to baby formula, increases the survival rate of premature infants. Some hospitals are even starting to add it to intravenous solutions.

One of the secrets to the benefits of coconut oil consumption is that it is composed of what are called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). The body will only use this kind of fat to burn for energy instead of making fat. It actually helps burn fat cells. Coconut oil has some additional benefits. It tends to push the body to develop ketones which have a cancer fighting/preventive effect. It also contains a compound called monolaurin that has an anti-viral effect in the body. If uninformed professionals or writers tell you that coconut oil is artery-clogging saturated fat, they need to read the new research. There is no question about it. Coconut oil, as part of a high protein, high healthy fat, low carbohydrate diet, with lots of low starch vegetables, is the way to go for good health and weight loss. ARE YOU THYROID DEFICIENT? Part 8

Iodine and the Thyroid Part 1 Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

I

odine, a trace mineral naturally found in the human body, is an essential element necessary for production of thyroid hormone to meet metabolic needs. (1)

It comes from the diet, as the body does not make iodine. Most of the world’s iodine resides in the ocean; hence seafood, and especially seaweed, are good sources of iodine. It is added to salt as a rule. The pituitary gland produces a “detector” hormone, thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH), which determines the amount of circulating hormone in the body. (Remember, thyroid hormone acts as the body’s “gas pedal. Too much and our involuntary systems, heartbeat, breathing, reflexes digestion etc., run too hot. Too little and we are tired, cold, weak, constipated, overweight and lethargic. We need our thyroids to be ‘Goldilocks’ – not too much, not too little.) When circulating thyroid levels are low, TSH signals the thyroid gland to increase production. When levels of thyroid are high, the message sent is “slow your roll, Nellie.” Iodine is an essential element necessary for the adequate production of thyroid hormone – specifically T4. T4 is the dominant circulating hormone acting as a “storehouse,” or reserve the body can rely on to supply the functioning thyroid hormone T3. (For this reason, when evaluating circulating thyroid levels we always measure free, unbound or usable T3). The key, but not only, building block, or nutrient, necessary for the production of T4 is iodine. (Selenium, zinc, protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, fish oil and tyrosine are also necessary for the successful production and smooth operation of the entire thyroid cascade. These will be covered in May, in Part IX Patient Mysteries Nutritional Necessities for a Healthy Thyroid.) T4 must convert, again via adequate nutrients into T3, the working portion of the thyroid complex. Nutrient deficiencies, stress, chemical exposure, gluten and various infectious diseases, lead to reduced production of T3. Iodine deficiency presents an additional challenge as it

18

can convert T4 to a false or inert T3, known as reverse T3. Measurements of total T3 without taking into account reverse T3 can appear normal. Traditional laboratory tests cannot distinguish between normal and reverse T3. For this reason, our protocol always looks at reverse T3. T3 is the molecule that attaches to our cell’s nucleus, increasing our body’s metabolism appropriately. Without adequate iodine the entire production slows to a crawl and, in the extreme, can stop completely. As we have seen with previous root causes of thyroid disease, gluten, heavy metals and toxins, infectious diseases, and adrenal insufficiency, iodine deficiency leads to autoimmune activity via molecular mimicry, the bottom line common denominator root cause of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Molecular mimics are abnormal, or “foreign” proteins that evolve when our body mistakenly incorporates similar but abnormal compounds into normal tissue. Our body eventually recognizes its “error” and sends in the “cavalry,” the immune system, to destroy the “foreign” invader, resulting in the destruction of the host – in this instance the thyroid gland. It typically takes 5-10 years of suffering before autoimmune disease is discovered. THE AUTOIMMUNE-IODINE-THYROID CONNECTION Iodine is a member of the halogen family, which includes fluorine, chlorine, and bromine. All halogens are chemically similar and can be molecularly “mistaken” for one another. In the case of iodine, incorporating sufficient quantities of the various other halogens in the metabolic process eventually leads to hypothyroidism via the molecular mimicry pathway, and eventual autoimmune disease as the body attempts to correct its error. The most prominent and most problematic molecular mimic of iodine is fluoride. Fluoride is found in toothpaste, infant formula, processed cereals, wine, beer, soda, tea (higher in decaf), insecticide anesthetics, antibiotics, SSRI inhibitors (Prozac, Zoloft, etc.), and antiviral medications. In an attempt to combat tooth decay, fluoride was added to the water supply of most major American cities 1940s and ‘50s. While the decline in tooth decay was uneven, the incidence of hypothyroidism skyrocketed.

March 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

A second, near simultaneous, event, was the “discovery” in 1948 by two UC, Berkeley professors, Jan Wolff and Israel Lyon Chaikoff, that the use of iodine created, rather alleviated, hypothyroidism. Labeling iodine as a poison, the “WolffChaikoff Effect,” set off a dizzying alarm of “iodophobia” that lingers to this day in the medical community. Prior to this report, iodine was used extensively, with a 90% success rate, to treat hypo and hyperthyroidism. (2)

TIRED? CRAVING SUGAR OR SALT?

Wolff and Chaikoff injected rats with radioactive iodine, which indeed kills thyroid tissue. They reported symptoms, sore teeth and gums, burning mouth, burning throat, stomach cramps, diarrhea, muscle wasting, acne and depression – indeed effects of radioactive thyroid, as a consequence of food derived iodine. They failed to distinguish between radioactive, poisonous iodine with natural, everyday garden-variety iodine from foodstuffs. Their experiments, though repeated many times, with physiologic, food grade iodine were never duplicated. The type of the iodine made all the difference. A brief “look back at how foolish we were” scenerio speculates that the creation of synthetic thyroid hormone as drug also occurred in this same time frame, and hence the belief. L-thyroxine quickly became the number one selling drug in the United States. For whatever reason, Wolff and Chaikoff were believed. (Incidentally, the rats refused to become hypothyroid when fed food grade iodine. They followed the normal course of events when iodine loaded. Wolff and Chaikoff publically accused the rats of escaping from the new “normal,” of (4-6) the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. They declared the poor innocent rats rodents non grata. SODA POLITICS healthy reading

O

ne of the biggest battles most people will fight in their life is with their weight. There are many misconceptions when it comes to the world of weight loss and among the most popular is the effect of diet sodas. Most people think they’re helping their health by drinking this type of soda, but the opposite is true. One of the most dangerous additives in the world is aspartame, also called NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful or Equal-Measure. Aspartame is one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners in the world, but is so toxic that it accounts for over 75 percent of the negative reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious, including seizures and death. Because of the chemical composition of aspartame, it breaks down into formaldehyde over a certain temperature. So unless your soft drink was kept refrigerated from the time it left the factory till the time you drank it, you’re ingesting formaldehyde, and I’m sure you’re not ready to be embalmed yet. Aspartame also tricks your body into thinking you’re ingesting sugar. So all the processes that would metabolize sugar begin to metabolize the aspartame the same way, becoming counterproductive for your weight loss plan. Plus in addition to weight gain, aspartame has been linked to heart disease, kidney issues, dental problems, and a host of other ailments.

Taking on Big Soda

By Marion Nestle, Ph.D. Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

Big Soda doesn’t want you to know this. And since their sales are beginning to lag because people are waking up to the dangers of sodas, whether diet or not, a recent “study” promoted and paid for by Coca-Cola stated that, “Drinking sodas are healthier than drinking water.” They must be getting desperate to publish something as ridiculous as that! Sodas are water, sugar or artificial sweetener and a bit of flavor. That’s it. They have no nutrition whatsoever and they cost pennies to produce. The marketing of diet soda is one of the biggest scams the world of food has ever seen. Yale University, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity as well as long term studies in metabolism finds that “frequent consumers of these sugar substitutes may be at increased risk of excessive weight gain, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.” Many people can lose weight, keep it off, and reduce or eliminate symptoms of diabetes by doing nothing more than removing sugary drinks from their daily diets. But Big Soda doesn’t want you to know this. They’ve spent billions getting us programmed to drink their sodas. Just like the tobacco companies, they couldn’t care less about the health effects of their products. They’re multibillion-dollar industries with global recognition, distribution and political power. Their ads are pure genius, created to slip below

ermenting plant-based foods is a very interesting and exciting part of your living plant-based diet. Adding those pre-digested dishes delivers exquisite taste experiences and upgrades any meal you’re about to serve.

they help you digest your meals and generate energy, promote healthy bowel movements and deliver a wide range of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, proteins, even the rare vitamin B12 you may be looking for in your plant-based foods.

The variation and possibilities in the world of fermentation are endless: they add the fun-factor of experiments you may have been missing in a boring and predictable kitchen, color, uplifting in-depth tastes. But more importantly,

With this recipe you’ll be able to replace your yogurt and add another wonderful option to your healthy breakfast table. It takes hardly any effort to prepare – as with all fermented foods … time takes care of it.

TOOLS Blender 1 large glass jar 1 medium bowl and a glass A wooden spoon or spatula to stir (don’t use metal) A cheesecloth or nut milk bag and a rubber band INGREDIENTS FOR BASIC RECIPE 16 oz. package of young Thai coconut meat or 2 C of fresh young Thai coconut meat from fresh coconuts 1/2 tsp. Probiotic powder or open 2 capsules (1/4 tsp. per capsule) 1¼ C of fresh young Thai coconut water (or: from a bottle of raw quality) INSTRUCTIONS Keep the coconuts or the meat and water out of the fridge to “warm” up Pour the coconut water into a glass Pour some warm water in a larger bowl and place the glass of coconut water into that bowl Sprinkle the probiotic powder into the coconut water and stir (spatula) Let the probiotics play around in the warming coconut water for 5-10 minutes In the meantime, place the 2 C of coconut meat in the blender Pour the coconut water and probiotics in the blender Start blending at low speed and take up the speed slowly The mixture is ready when it’s very smooth and shiny

Pour the yogurt into the glass jar and cover up with a cheesecloth Let sit on a warm spot (not hot!) overnight in winter and about 4 hours in summer TIPS Only fill the jar half-way with yogurt: the amount can double Stop the fermentation by chilling in the fridge: yogurt will keep for about a week Fermentation is very temperature sensitive: taste in-between to see if it’s ready In hot weather, your yogurt is ready in 4 to 5 hours In winter, it takes a night to ferment when you prepare the yogurt in the afternoon Don’t overheat the yogurt in your blender or while fermenting: it will kill the probiotics A constant temperature of about 84°F to 91°F works perfectly The yogurt is ready when it is “turned” and has a fluffy structure from fermenting Lovely as breakfast with berries, banana, crunchy buckwheaties,…

You can make lovely shakes with it, blended with berries or strawberries in summer Freeze your yogurt berry shakes in ice-cream molds for a refreshing summer snack Would you like to elevate your energy in one week by making one small change in your busy day? GRAIN FREE

D O G T R E AT S

A

ll of us with “fur-kids” can relate to wanting the very best for them, and the frustration associated with not being able to communicate clearly with them when something is wrong in their world. Since allergies can be so tough to diagnose with your pets, we wanted to include a healthy, delicious grainfree option for your canine companions. Please see page 5(?) for a list of websites with healthy homemade treat recipes for horses, guinea pigs, cats, birds and yes, even your pet llama or alpaca! Please remember to test all new recipes by giving your pet just a small amount, to start. Allergies and intolerances can crop up in the oddest places. For those of you giving your dog(s) peanut butter (which some dogs are also allergic to – just like people), please make sure it is just peanuts with no other additives. It is especially important not to give your dog a peanut butter labeled as “sugar-free” because many manufacturers are now using Xylitol as a sweetener, which is a natural way to sweeten the product without adding calories, but renders it incredibly poisonous to your pups!

1/2 cup coconut oil 1 can pureed pumpkin 1/3 cup shredded carrots (optional) INSTRUCTIONS Pre-heat your oven to 350º F. In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and form dough into a ball. Mine was plenty moist, but if yours is dry at all, try adding another egg. Roll out dough in between two sheets of parchment or wax paper. Trust me here – rolling this out on your counter will be an exercise in frustration.

This month’s grain-, dairy- and gluten-free paleo recipe was derived from http://lexiscleankitchen.com/2015/02/06/5ingredient-grain-free-dog-treats/ and my dogs went nuts (pun intended) over them!

Use your desired cookie cutters to form your treats. I have two tips for this process, if you’re using dog-biscuit-shaped cookie cutters as pictured in the opening image. First, when you push the cookie cutter down, squeeze in the sides a little, wiggle the cutter just a bit to release the cookie and pick it up away from the remaining dough. This will be especially helpful if using shredded carrot, because the cookie will always want to break where a piece of carrot crosses it. Second, after about 15 cookies, my cutter was getting weighed down with sticky dough residue, making it difficult to get a clean cookie shape. If you rinse it with hot water and dry it thoroughly before continuing, it will cut a lot cleaner.

INGREDIENTS (ORGANIC, WHENEVER POSSIBLE)

Transfer to a baking sheet, greased with the coconut oil.

Please share pics of your pups enjoying their favorite homemade healthy treats (and your own recipes) on our Facebook page or email me at editor@hbmag.com.

1 1/2 cup coconut flour 1/2 cup peanut butter or nut butter of choice, no added ingredients 4 eggs

24

Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool completely before serving. My treats never actually hardened completely, but my dogs certainly don’t mind. A friend suggested cooking them at lower heat for longer time – she cooks hers at a very low heat, overnight, to make them crunchy. This will make about 60 or so cookies, depending on your cutter size.

AUTOMOTIVE INJURIES CAN In 2013 we decided we wanted to get a family pet. I had always loved Retrievers and Labs and my husband had always had German Shorthair Pointers. Since he wanted a hunting dog, we opted for a GSP and found ourselves our very own pup that we named Kap. (Yes, he was named after the famous quarterback.) We hadn’t had him as part of our family for long when we realized that the food the breeder had been feeding him was messing with his stomach. He wasn’t eating well for a puppy and he always had flatulence issues. We weren’t sure which dog food to switch him to, so we picked a little better quality kibble, but still a grocery store brand. As we went along, the stomach troubles seemed to continue and he developed very pink and irritated skin. A trip to the vet diagnosed allergies, though they weren’t sure if it was food allergies or environmental, and they couldn’t speculate as to whether or not they would return or if it was a one-time episode. We purchased the expensive spray and proceeded onward. I wasn’t overly satisfied with that decision, but the poor boy needed some relief from the incessant itching. Then the search for information began. Not long afterward, I was speaking with an old friend who just happened to be gluten intolerant. She suggested we try a “grain-free” dog food. I had never had a dog with allergies or intolerances before and didn’t even know such dog food existed. We looked around and settled on a brand with which we could be satisfied of the ingredients. I am happy to report that the grain-free dog food, along with organic coconut oil daily, has significantly helped not only the skin condition but the stomach troubles as well. I also started making homemade treats, much like you will find in the recipe included here. I figured it was pointless to feed a grain-free food if I was going to turn around and feed treats made with ingredients that were questionable. – Renee Honea, designer for Healthy Beginnings

Is

Written by Stefan V. Franciosa, DO, MBA Board-certified in Vascular and Interventional Radiology

here’s a good chance you’re sitting while reading this article. We sit while driving the kids to school and while driving to work. Many of us sit at a desk all day at the office. We do it all over again at the end of the day, when we commute to pick up the kids at school and drive home. Then we sit on the couch for a couple hours watching TV before bedtime. What may be surprising to many people is that sitting all day is harmful to their health. It has even been compared to smoking. Recent research has demonstrated the negative effect sitting for long periods of time can have on the human body. Even more unsettling — regular exercise doesn’t seem to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting. As a vein specialty center, we are focused not only on treating vein conditions but also educating healthcare consumers on how a healthy lifestyle may prevent future vein conditions.

10 hours a day they may have a much greater risk of developing heart disease. DIGESTION PROBLEMS If you sit after eating, this causes your abdominal contents to compress and digestion slows. Sluggish digestion can lead to symptoms such as cramping, bloating, and constipation. POSTURE PROBLEMS

Here are a few examples of how a sedentary life can negatively impact vein health, your overall health – AND a few prevention tips.

• Sore Neck and Shoulders: Sitting and working at a computer or talking on the phone can mean you’re moving your neck and head forward in an unnatural way. Over time, this can lead to imbalances in your spine that will cause sore neck and shoulders. • Back Pain: Sitting is harder on your spine than standing. Sitting and hunching in front of a computer is even worse. Some studies show that 40% of people with back pain spend long hours daily at a computer.

VARICOSE VEINS

WEAKENED MUSCLES

Regularly sitting for long periods leads to poor circulation in your legs. When you sit your veins must work harder to move blood to your heart. This can lead to swelling in your ankles, varicose veins, and even blood clots, also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Sitting with your legs crossed or bent can be worse.

• When you stand, your abdominal muscles are engaged. When you sit, your abdominal muscles can go unused and over time become weak.

HEART DISEASE Blood flows slower when you sit and your muscles burn less fat. It then becomes easier for fatty acids to obstruct your heart. Published research in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, for example, demonstrated that when women sit for

• Hip Problems: Your hips become tight after long periods of sitting. This in turn limits your range of motion because they are not extended. For the elderly, a leading cause of falls can be attributed to decreased hip mobility. • Your glutes become weakened with prolonged sitting. This affects the stability of your body and your stride when walking, running and jumping. As vein care specialists, our particular interest March 2016 • Healthy Beginnings
