WHAT IS

GRATITUDE?

T

he holidays present to us a time to acknowledge and express gratitude for the people and things and experiences that we often overlook each day. Expressing gratitude for these people and things and experiences – these gifts – can help make our holidays more meaningful.

But, what is gratitude? How can gratitude be given, or achieved?

“Gratitude is a state of mind that arises when you affirm a good thing in your life that comes from outside yourself, or when you notice and relish little pleasures,” according to Robin Stern, Ph.D., associate director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and Robert Emmons, Ph.D., professor at the University of California, Davis. It’s an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has – as opposed to a consumer-driven emphasis on what one wants. Whether it’s the sight of your child smiling or a delicious bite of apple pie or the joy triggered by a good joke – we all have reasons to be grateful.

How can gratitude be practiced?

Practice gratitude as you might meditate or practice yoga. Gratitude practice begins by: Paying attention. Notice the good that occurs during your day. Did you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee this morning? Did you feel the crisp fall breeze on your face? Did your coworker greet you with a smile? Pay attention and appreciate moments that add joy and serenity to your day. Writing. Writing helps you organize thoughts and reflect on experiences, encouraging you reflect on and appreciate the goodness in your life. Expressing. Many people in your life have helped encourage, inspire and shape you into who you are today – have you expressed gratitude toward them? Consider writing a loved one, friend, colleague or professor a thank you letter, or take them out for a cup of coffee. The practice of gratitude is a thoughtful, warm holiday gift. Consider gifting your loved ones with gratitude this season.

What are the benefits of gratitude?

Research shows that we can deliberately cultivate gratitude, and can heighten our happiness and overall wellness. Expressing gratitude is linked to emotional health, satisfaction, well-being and happiness. Grateful people experience more joy and love in their lives, and have a reduced risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders.

ast month we talked about why it’s almost impossible to get a definitive diagnosis and long term solution for dizziness. This month we’ll discuss a little more about the difference between dizziness and vertigo. There are many different types of dizziness, but what most doctors are trying to do when you come to their offices (or ER) with “dizziness” symptoms is work to differentiate as to whether you have dizziness or vertigo, not figure out what type of dizziness you are suffering with. Vertigo is being experienced when the room is spinning around you (most common) or you are spinning around the room. Vertigo is the illusion of movement (rotational). Dizziness is the “odd” sensation. It is described as feelings of floating, rocking back and forth, and light-headedness. Carsickness and airsickness are forms of “dizziness.” To diagnose dizziness versus vertigo, it’s important to pay attention to when the dizziness came on: i.e., when standing, lying down in bed, getting off a boat, exerting yourself, or when feelings of anxiousness or stress arise. These symptoms plus a comprehensive neurological examination including evaluations of the eyes, ears and cervical spine should direct your practitioner to either understand the cause of the problem or to understand which parts of your brain are dysfunctioning (see part 1) as a cause of your dizziness. MRIs, CAT scans, EEGs, etc. should be ordered only if needed according to the results of this evaluation, which should not be very often.

Which one are you and can it be fixed?

To diagnose dizziness versus vertigo, it’s important to pay attention to when the dizziness came on... Let’s briefly review the most common causes of dizziness: BPPV: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo occurs when crystals dislodge from the inner ear and into the “balance” canals. Then, a person turns their head one way (left or right) and the room spins (vertigo), this will last 30 seconds to one minute. After it stops, they will feel dizziness for weeks on end (a neurological exam of the eyes diagnoses this, and the Epley maneuver treats it). How long it lasts and how well the person responds depends on the health of their cerebellum (see part 1). This dizziness is the aftermath of an inner ear problem. Meniere’s disease: Symptoms include tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear fullness, hearing loss and vertigo, which last for hours and are then followed by dizziness. It’s very important to distinguish when you have vertigo or dizziness, or one or the other in isolation for proper diagnosis. This is an inner ear problem that dysregulates brain function and causes dizziness. It’s auto immune. The solution is to calm down the immune response with diet and nutritional support and strengthen the cerebellum with brain rehabilitative exercises. continued on page 8

Labyrinthitis: Another inner ear problem. It is an inflammation usually due to an infection in the inner ear. It will cause balance issues and can affect hearing. This diagnosis is oftentimes lumped in with vestibular neuritis, which is a neuropathy (inner ear nerve dying from autoimmune infection). Both get vertigo suddenly, which lasts hours to days. Drugs such as Valium are used to get through the severe stage, then comes the dizziness. These dizziness sufferers are the folks that end up in ER. Once the immediate vertigo episode is over, the patient develops dizziness because the brain’s cerebellum does not adapt to loss of inner ear activity on that side. The long term solution is to rehab the cerebellum and calm the immune system. MdDS: Mal de Debarquement Syndrome occurs after exposure to motion. When people come off a ship and still feel like they’re on it for months, their balance mechanisms (i.e. cerebellum, see part 1) need to

be reprogrammed with brain rehab exercises. Exam and history are important as the cerebellar dysfunction usually does not show up on imaging. Cervical spine caused dizziness: The explanation is beyond the scope of this article. Just know that The Spine Journal found that people who have arthritic neck spurs have increased sensory input in the brain when they turn their head. The brain cannot adapt to this increased input and the person gets dizzy. This is the person whose dizziness goes away with chiropractic manipulation, neck traction, yoga or massage. Brain rehab exercises also work. Anxiety-related dizziness: The most common dizziness association we see in our office. This is called psychophysiologic dizziness. This does not mean the patient is “psycho.” All forms of dizziness and vertigo can perpetuate anxiety and it becomes a vicious cycle. Anxiety decreases blood flow to the gray matter of the brain. Due to decreased oxygen the patient “doesn’t know where they are” or “feels kind of dizzy and light headed.” This is diagnosed by exam and history. The difficulty in making this diagnosis is that people don’t want to admit to the doctor that they’re stressed. The solution in our office is brain rehab exercises and natural support solutions to dampen stress responses. There are many, many more types of dizziness: Including multisensory dizziness in people with peripheral neuropathy, cataracts, macular degeneration and/or age related inner ear pathology. Vascular vertigo is caused by mini strokes that eventually result in dizziness due to reduced blood flow. Vasovagal syncope

dizziness occurs in young people who are sensitive to stress and emotional trauma. There are many metabolic causes for dizziness including low blood sugar and thyroid disorders – particularly Hashimoto’s disease. Most of the time your dizziness can be diagnosed and addressed. As per part 1, it oftentimes is not diagnosed because the cause of dizziness is frequently some abnormality in your cerebellum versus vertigo which is caused by the inner ear. Again, the problem with diagnosing is that dizziness is primarily never the inner ear, and a neurologically abnormal cerebellar dysfunction doesn’t show up on diagnostic imaging. A comprehensive functional neurological, metabolic and cervical spine exam will almost always ferret out the cause of dizziness. Ultimately, dizziness should almost always be able to be resolved without drugs or surgery. H E R E I S M U C H C O N F U S I O N A M O N G B O T H nonhealth professionals and unfortunately many physicians about dietary ketosis and the ketogenic diet.

This is unfortunately based on the fact that most doctors receive little to no training in diet and nutrition during their time in medical school. What they do get in school is training on how to deal with diabetic ketoacidosis (a potentially life threatening situation) that can occur in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus. There is a huge difference between dietary ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis. Doctors tend to view any level of ketosis as a warning sign of ketoacidosis and often caution patients about ketogenic dieting. The biggest analytical study on the safety and efficacy of the classic ketogenic diet to date was recently completed at Johns Hopkins University. The lead researcher, Eric Kossoff, M.D., stated, “Our study should help put to rest some of the nagging doubts about the long-term safety of the ketogenic diet. The effects of the ketogenic diet have been overwhelmingly positive, whether it has been to treat a brain disorder, correct a metabolic problem, or to lose unwanted weight.” Glucose (sugar) is the primary source of energy used by all the cells in the body. We get glucose mostly from the carbohydrates in our foods. Between meals, when blood glucose levels fall, the liver starts converting fatty acids (fats) into ketones and blood ketone levels increase. The ketogenic diet has been used in modern medicine for over 90 years. Dr. Russell

Wilder at Mayo Clinic designed the diet in 1924. Despite being highly effective in treating epilepsy, it fell out of fashion due to an increase in new anti-seizure medications in the 1940s (since that is what it was originally used for). Back then doctors often used fasting therapy to treat difficult health problems such as cancer, arthritis, gastritis and neurological problems, let alone for weight loss. Fasting is one of the quickest ways to get into “ketosis.” The diet is high in fat, supplies adequate protein and is low in carbohydrates. This combination changes the way energy is produced and used in the body. Fat is converted in the liver to ketone bodies and it lowers glucose (sugar) levels and improves insulin resistance. The ketogenic diet has definitely been found to be a safe and effective way to address a number of frustrating chronic medical problems. The exciting thing is that it has been proven to be helpful at being an adjunct to both conventional and alternative therapies. ovember is Great American Smokeout Month. In 1977, California sponsored a Smokeout Day where over a million people quit smoking for one day. That led to thousands of people quitting for good. The American Cancer Society then set aside the third Thursday in November as National Smokeout Day. This year, it’s November 17. So quit like a champion! Get ready to lose the habit and become victorious over tobacco. All of the life found in the soil needs to be fed (and watered) to survive. Ancient farmers knew this, so they fed their soil with compost. Sound funny doesn’t it? Feeding your soil. They knew the soil needed more than manure and organic matter. Why? Because soil can’t eat manure and organic matter that hasn’t broken down. The soil is forced to expend all of its energy trying to break down raw organic matter, when it would much rather be snacking on a buffet of foods that are ready for consumption. Think of an untouched area of a forest that’s been full of life forever. There’s a never-ending cycle of organic matter being broken down. Leaves, fruit and animal droppings are constantly falling onto the forest floor and the soil is up for the task of breaking it all down because it’s well fed, constantly eating all of the foods it has already broken down for consumption over hundreds of years. In your backyard, all your soil has to eat is what you supply. If you only give it manure or poorly brokendown organics, it has to work

incredibly hard on an empty stomach. It would be like giving a steak to a baby… well, kind of. So how do we give soil-baby what it wants to eat? We compost manure and raw organics into digestible food, an end product called humus, which is commonly referred to simply as compost. When processed correctly – which takes time, precision, a proven recipe and quality inputs – humus contains a complex assortment of nutrients perfectly ready for the soil to eat. When the soil has all it wants to eat, it spends its time creating all of the goodies that plants like to eat. Just as your soil can’t eat raw organics before they’ve been broken down, plants can’t consume food through their roots until a microbe has digested that food. When a plant has plenty of nutrients to eat, it can focus its energy into producing an abundant, plump, nutrientdense, natural harvest of delicious and healthy fruit or vegetables. It’s all part of one amazing cycle; the Full Circle.

ranberries – round and plump, bright and festive – add colorful hues of reds and maroons to any Thanksgiving dinner centerpiece. While acting as a gorgeous addition to holiday décor and a colorful garnish to your holiday platter, cranberries also provide numerous benefits to your holiday health. Cranberries pack a powerful, pucker-inducing punch of tangy flavor. Reaching peak plumpness in October, cranberries are a timely, healthy fruit to incorporate into your autumn snacks and meals. Here’s why: • Proanthocyanidins (PACs; type of flavonoids) in cranberries provide urinary tract benefits by interfering with the ability of pathogenic P-fimbriated Escherichia coli (E. coli) to cause infections in the urinary tract. • PACs may benefit oral health by preventing bacteria from binding to teeth. However, many commercial cranberry juices and other cranberry products are high in fructose (fruit sugar). PACs also help in supporting digestive health by decreasing inflammation associated with chronic disease and aging. • Cranberries are a good source of vitamin C and fiber, which help boost the body’s resistance against infectious agents and help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. • Cranberries contain antioxidant polyphenols (natural compounds found in fruits and vegetables that are linked to certain health benefits), which are also known to have anticancer properties. Fresh cranberries contain the most antioxidants, while bottled cranberry juice contains the least. When buying cranberry juice, ensure that you’re buying 100 percent juice – read the label and avoid juices or “cocktails” containing added sugar. Consume cranberries in moderation because they contain sugar fructose, which may be harmful to your health in excessive amounts. Apple-Cranberry Crisp a sweet and tangy twist to your holiday dessert Cranberries give this crisp a delightful and colorful tartness. A moderate amount of oil replaces the large amount of butter usually called for in toppings for this dessert. This dessert is best served warm – yum! Filling: 12 large, green apples peeled, cored and sliced 8 ounces of fresh or frozen cranberries 1/3 cup of light brown sugar, packed 2 tablespoons of whole wheat pastry flour Topping: 1 ½ cups of old-fashioned rolled oats ¾ teaspoon of salt ½ cup of light brown sugar, packed 1/3 cup of maple syrup

Juice of 1 lemon 1/3 cup of brandy 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

½ cup of toasted wheat germ 1 ½ teaspoons of cinnamon 1/3 cup of canola or grape seed oil

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Toss the sliced apples in a large bowl with the cranberries, lemon juice, brandy, 1/3 cup of light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and whole wheat pastry flour. Pile the apple mixture into an 8-by 10-inch baking dish. Mix together the ingredients for the toppings and spread over the apples. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake for 40 minutes more until the apples are soft. Serves 12. Use organic ingredients, when possible. COMBATING DEPRESSION Addressing depression and seeking help during the holiday season. A raw Q&A interview with local mental health professionals. Rudy von Ravensberg, LMFT, and Chris Edwards, LCSW, psychotherapists and owners of Great Basin Behavioral Health and Wellness, provide insight on the signs, symptoms and triggers of depression. von Ravensberg and Edwards help individuals focus on lifestyle changes to achieve behavioral health and holistic wellness goals.

WHAT IS DEPRESSION? Edwards: Depression is a very common mental health issue that is characterized by a set of symptoms. [These symptoms] include feeling down more often than not, difficulty sleeping or oversleeping, low energy, and this can be accompanied

by thoughts of suicide. So, that experience can be fairly individualistic depending on the individual and their activity levels before their onset of depression. It’s important to recognize what those general symptoms are, but also try to understand how those look within that individual. von Ravensberg: And then, I think you’re referring to clinical depression as opposed to what many people will describe as, ‘I’m feeling depressed,’ which is a common misnomer in our society. We have a

tendency to say, ‘Oh, I’m feeling really depressed today,’ just to indicate that maybe you’re having a down day or you’re feeling sad – that’s not clinical depression, it’s very different. One of the most clear-cut criteria that we look for from a professional standpoint is: are the depressive symptoms interfering with the person’s work or school, with their

social life or their family life? Is it causing conflicts? If [the symptoms are] not causing problems in any of those areas, it isn’t clinical depression. Not to say that they’re not struggling. If somebody’s depressed to the point that they’re skipping school or they’re missing work regularly and can’t get out of bed in the morning – that’s clinical depression.

IS IT COMMON FOR SOCIETY TO MISUNDERSTAND DEPRESSION? IS DEPRESSION TRULY RECOGNIZED AS AN ILLNESS? Edwards: Lack of general education into what mental health problems actually look like is really unfortunate for the people that do struggle with these mental health issues. Not only do they have that issue, but then from their role within society they kind of become shunned or stigmatized and that only perpetuates the mental health issue.

Oftentimes, that family member might marginalize their emotional state and say

HOW ARE BOTH STRESS AND EXPECTATIONS CONNECTED TO DEPRESSION, AND WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION TO HEIGHTEN DURING THE HOLIDAYS? von Ravensberg: Stress is more clumped together with anxiety than depression, but simultaneously anxiety is clumped with depression – it’s very common to experience both. The stressors [are] involved with

numerous factors including having extended family together (oftentimes, there is a strong history between those family members, sometimes there’s a history of conflict and ill feelings … exacerbating stress). There’s a physiological stress from an increased consumption of poor foods,

unhealthy foods [and] snacks, but also the increased stress from substance use and the expectation in our culture that substance use is the norm at a family function or other holiday party. So, we tend to drink more, eat worse food, sleep less [and] we have less opportunity to get outside (there’s less light outside, there’s reduction in physical activity due to cold weather, and it increases isolation outside of the actual family experience). Edwards: This is the time of year where expectations somewhat go through the roof. How many other times throughout the year are we expected to cook a multicourse meal with a turkey and all the trimmings? That’s a lot of pressure. And then, 4 weeks later, we do it again and in that interim we also

which in a lot of cases is not necessarily the truth. von Ravensberg: It’s really a form of self criticism that perpetuates again the depressed mood. Also, there is a cultural expectation that has been increasing for quite a long time involving materialism and status. Especially with kids who demand increasingly more expensive gifts so that they can maintain social status and, if they don’t, if their parents are not able to provide those items, that could lead to and perpetuate a depressed mood.

HOW CAN AN INDIVIDUAL FEEL ISOLATED DURING THE HOLIDAYS?

It’s much more difficult to manage severe depression or even moderate depression, so an ounce of prevention leads to strikingly improved outcomes.

HOW DOES AN INDIVIDUAL STRUGGLING WITH DEPRESSION SHARE THEIR BATTLE AND SEEK HELP?

In this community, there is a shortage of mental health professionals. We will always expect that, in the first couple of weeks after New Year’s, us and everyone else are inundated with people trying to get in because they wait until after the holidays – until things are really bad. Try to nip it in the bud in November or December – you have a better chance of getting in and having access to care.

von Ravensberg: You have to identify the individual that is going to lend you their attention, and not be invalidating or possibly reject your request for help. Finding an individual in the family or a close friend that can give an objective opinion about whether or not this is something that’s different than the normal

von Ravensberg: There’s a strikingly large difference between being lonely and being alone. Being lonely is the lack of connectedness that one might experience in a social setting. So, I can be at a party surrounded by friends and family but, if I don’t have that connection with them, I’m going to feel lonely and isolated. The tendency to isolate is one of the primary characteristics of clinical depression. So, circling back toward the question of how somebody can tell if they’re more clinically depressed, there’s going to be a tendency to isolate and withdraw.

Further research has shown that sucrose (table sugar) and high fructose corn syrup cause metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Cholesterol the Good Cholesterol composes about 30 percent of all cell membranes, modulates membrane fluidity and functions in intracellular transport, cell signaling and nerve conduction. Within cells, cholesterol is a precursor molecule for vitamin D and all steroid hormones, including the adrenal gland hormones cortisol and aldosterone, as well as the sex hormones progesterone, estrogen and testosterone. Low cholesterol, in our experience, is associated with viral illness and Lyme disease. High cholesterol, especially 300 or over, may be an indicator of low thyroid functioning, even in the face of normal thyroid blood levels1.

Hypothyroidism and Heart Disease These pages have been replete with praise for replenishing thyroid hormone with clinical symptoms of low thyroid such as depression, coldness, dryness, heavy periods, fatigue and high cholesterol. When I was in medical school in the 1960s, high cholesterol was associated with low thyroid2. In 1976, Broda Barnes, MD, Ph.D., published a landmark study in his book, Hypothyroidism: the Unsuspected Illness.

In this study, he reviewed 1,569 patients who had been on natural thyroid hormone therapy for 22 years. When compared to the Framingham Heart Study – a study conducted in Framingham, Massachusetts that is routinely used as a baseline for cardiovascular disease – he predicted that, of his patients, 72 should have suffered heart attacks (only four attacks occurred).

Cholesterol Does Not Cause Vascular Disease Cholesterol does not cause atherosclerotic vascular disease. It is time to stop making cholesterol the solitary scapegoat for the development of heart disease. An abundance of evidence clearly links inflammation to cardiovascular disease. People consuming the typical modern American diet filled with sugar, refined carbohydrates, soda and processed foods are constantly subjecting their bodies to inflammation3. Interestingly, chlorine was first introduced in drinking water in 1912 before cardiovascular disease became common4. Water filtration to remove chlorine and other drugs and hydrocarbons is also an important part of protection against heart disease (hair analysis can detect heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, aluminum and arsenic, and is available in our office).

Magnesium Works as Well as Statins Statin drug use to reduce cholesterol levels has been associated with memory loss and confusion1-5. The FDA recently required that a warning label be added to statin drugs noting that they can increase the risk of memory loss and confusion, as well as liver damage and type 2 diabetes. Statins have also been linked to myopathy (muscle weakness), rhabdomyolysis (muscle degeneration), peripheral neuropathy (pain, numbness and tingling in the feet and legs), insomnia, heart failure and erectile dysfunction1-5. Magnesium works similarly to statins to increase good cholesterol and reduce the bad ones without side effects6.

Critics of statin research note that many studies failed to complete and publish negative findings lending less credence to support their use. Male form and function, often a surrogate for self-esteem, can dramatically affect a relationship, positively or negatively. Being able to achieve and maintain satisfaction in the bedroom can affect one’s overall outlook not only on the home front, but in the boardroom as well. Fifty percent of men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience, at some point in their lives, some sort of sexual dysfunction2. Prior to March 27, 1998, the day the Food And Drug Administration approved Viagra, there was little to no discussion about difficulties with sexual activity and sexual fulfillment. It was one of those “you’re getting older” issues we just dealt with. Interestingly, Viagra, developed accidentally, was originally studied for its blood pressure and chest pain reducing properties. Viagra, and its rivals, Levitra and Cialis, improve pelvic blood flow and performance on a shortterm basis. They are expensive, are accompanied by serious frequent side effects and do next to nothing for premature ejaculation or penile length and girth. To solve this dilemma, we developed the Clearfield Medical Group Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Program for Men. While our method garners praise from patients as near as the Truckee Meadows Basin, and as far away as Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, for a certain subset of men, hormone replacement is not indicated, not tolerated, not desired or is not satisfying enough. In the August 2016 issue, we introduced the concept of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), extracting stem cells from your own blood, as a means of stimulating new collagen and growing new blood vessels, nerves and fatty tissue to “repair” maturing skin, hair and alleviate hormonal decline. ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

The previous articles in this series discussed the importance of giving some account to the reality of evil. If we do not grapple with this reality, we merely increase the likelihood of becoming evil’s victim, instrument, or both. But wrestling with the reality of evil is no easy task. One reason for this, quite simply, P A R T 3 : T H E S H A D O W is that evil does not want to be known. There is a reason robbers don’t come to your home and politely ask when you will be away and if you keep your spare house key in the electrical outlet box by the side door. Neither is evil a dummy when it comes to robbing the house of your soul. Like a thief or a cheat, it does not want to be seen. It creates diversions, distractions, illusions and mishaps in order to go undetected. It does not want to be identified for what it is for detection would threaten the attainment of its goals. You are probably aware of such tactics as intentionally used by other people but may not realize that evil, as an autonomous force in the universe, can be just as devious and coordinated in its workings as an individual with malicious intent. For example, evil may draw on the energy of the trickster. Consider a cancer or infection that grows undetected in the body until it is almost too late to treat; or the seemingly “random” series of events that lands you in a dangerous section of an unfamiliar city at

night, with a dead cell phone and a flat tire. In addition to the reality that evil does not want to be known is the fact that we are often reluctant to see evil as well, especially when what we might see is a facet of ourselves.

Typically we don’t want to be conscious of our illusions and self-deceptions. We resist recognizing our more base impulses of greed, envy, arrogance, aggression, selfishness, etc. We try to hide from others and ourselves the parts of our personality that we don’t like. These disowned parts of ourself become what Carl Jung called the shadow. The shadow refers to those aspects

of the personality that we ought to know and come to terms with, but which we have ignored, denied or rejected for one reason or another. Often we don’t want to know the deeper motivation behind some of our actions. But the less we know of these things – the less we are able to recognize them in ourselves – the more likely they are to cause mischief and pain in unexpected ways. This often occurs through the process of projection. Projection refers to the tendency to see in

others things that we are unconscious of in ourselves. For example, we may be acutely aware of and irritated by the laziness we spot in a coworker when that same tendency to laziness in ourself goes oddly unnoticed. We can project onto others both positive and negative characteristics, and what we project affects how we relate to them. When a negative projection is occurring, we will tend to dislike and criticize that other person, group, country, etc. We are likely to do battle with them when we really ought to be doing battle with ourself. Thus, negative projections foster attitudes of arrogance and superiority, breakdowns in communication, and all manner of conflict and broken relationships.

arlic – the potent, vampire-repelling and romancekilling herb – has a long history of being used as a powerful illness-fighting therapy. But, does drinking garlic tea or garlic cough syrup truly battle sore throats and flu-like symptoms? Or, does this question just continue to bolster regurgitated, unsubstantiated folktales? Researchers at Washington State University found that a compound in garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting Campylobacter bacterium, one of the most common bacterial causes of food-borne illness in the United States. The compound – diallyl sulfide – was more effective than erythromycin and ciprofloxacin, antibiotics used to treat norovirus and other bacterial infections with symptoms of abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The research was published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Garlic also contains allicin, which has been found to exhibit antibacterial activity against various bacterial agents. One study published in by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that individuals who ingested a capsule of an allicin-containing garlic supplement, once daily over a 12-week period, had significantly fewer colds than individuals who did not ingest an allicin-containing garlic supplement, indicating that an allicin-containing supplement can prevent attack by the common cold virus. While eating garlic is a generally healthy practice, researchers and scientists remain divided on garlic’s ability to combat bacterial illness, flu and cancer-causing agents. However, there’s no question that garlic is rich in manganese, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and vitamins B6 and C, and has immune-boosting and antiviral effects, which can help reduce inflammation, boost immune function and improve cardiovascular health. After all, garlic has been prescribed since prebiblical times (an ancient Egyptian medical listing from 1550 B.C. recommends garlic as a remedy for 22 ailments, including headaches, bites, worms, tumors and health complications), according to an excerpt in Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs.

If you’re looking to take advantage of garlic’s immuneboosting properties this flu season, try this soothing, garlic soup:

GARLIC (AND WE MEAN GARLIC) SOUP RECIPE 26 garlic cloves (unpeeled) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) organic butter (grass fed) 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder 1/2 cup fresh ginger 2 1/4 cups sliced onions 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 26 garlic cloves, peeled 1/2 cup coconut milk 3 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth 4 lemon wedges Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl. Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, thyme, ginger and cayenne powder and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted garlic and 26 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes. Add vegetable broth; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until smooth. Return soup to saucepan; add coconut milk and bring to simmer. Season with sea salt and pepper for flavor. Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve. Serves 4. Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
