Goodbye, August.

Hello, September. Written by Gabrielle Irvin The time to bid farewell to sun-kissed summer days and welcome the slow greeting of crisp fall days is upon us – autumn is near. Although it may be too soon to don your favorite burgundy knit cardigan and indulge in a much yearned for warm pumpkin spice latte (it is, after all, nearly 90 degrees in pockets of Northern Nevada), it’s certainly not too soon to learn about, and embrace, the first day of fall. Thursday, September 22 marks the first day of the fall season, also known as the autumnal equinox. “There are only two times during the year when the Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in a ‘nearly’ equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes,” according to the National Weather Service. This twice-yearly event is referred to as an equinox, which is derived from two Latin words – aequus (equal) and nox (night). The days become longer at the higher latitudes because it takes the sun longer to rise and set. Therefore, on the equinox and for several days before and after the equinox, the hours of the day will nearly equal the

hours of the night (both day and night being nearly 12 hours long). “The ‘nearly’ equal hours of day and night is due to refraction of sunlight, or a bending of the light’s rays that causes the sun to appear above the horizon when the actual position of the sun is below the horizon,” according to the National Weather Service. The change in the Earth’s tilt causes the change in seasons, with the Northern Hemisphere slowly moving from the warmth of summer to the chill of winter. From this point, the days will gradually become shorter as we approach the winter solstice. So, this month, keep an eye out for subtle hints of fall, and appreciate the beauty of Northern Nevada’s slow-changing leaves, golden landscapes and brisk evening air.

“ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS associated with grains has nothing to do with anything inherently bad within the grain itself, but in what we do to the grains before we eat them.” Sprouting grain is another way to enhance its nutritional benefits. Historically, humans ate grain in a partially germinated form without even realizing it. Whole grains that were left standing in stacks in open fields would often begin the sprouting process before they were taken into storage. Sprouting grains increase their vitamin B content, especially vitamins B2, B5 and B6. Sprouting neutralizes enzyme inhibitors that can make grains difficult to digest; instead, numerous enzymes that aid in digestion are produced. It also neutralizes phytic acid, a substance that is found in the bran of all grains, which inhibits the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc. Sprouting inactivates aflatoxins, potential carcinogens

found in grains as well. Sprouted grains are best eaten lightly steamed, but can be added to breads or baked goods too.

Another ancient method of enjoying grains is fermentation. Sourdough breads made with traditional sourdough starters are good examples of fermented grain. Ethiopian injera made from teff and Japanese amazake made from rice are other good examples. The fermentation process facilitates the creation of lactic acid, which helps maintain beneficial flora in the digestive tract.

People who are sensitive to gluten foods may find that they are better able to tolerate these foods in a whole, sprouted, soaked or fermented form; while some folks are still better off staying away from gluten foods altogether. Thankfully, there are many delicious grains including buckwheat, amaranth, quinoa, millet, teff and rice that are gluten free. Instead of eating stripped and denatured grains that put undue stress on the digestive system, consider bringing back some of these ancient methods of preparing and enjoying grains. And most importantly, choose real grains over processed grain products!

Soaking grains overnight before cooking is another way to make them more easily digestible. By letting grains such as rice, oats, amaranth and quinoa soak, good digestive enzymes are activated, and starches that are difficult to digest are broken down. Be sure to pour off the water the grains have been soaking in, and to rinse them thoroughly before cooking. You will find that it takes less time for your grains to cook, and that they will be softer and more flavorful.

DISORDERS

GETTING TO THE UNDERLYING MECHANISMS Written by Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.n.B.

THIRTY PERCENT OF THE AMERICAN POPULATION

experiences clinically diagnosed chronic anxiety. About 70 percent of patients who walk into our office experience anxiety. Anxiety is defined as an excessive fear response and/or worry that interferes with functioning or causes significant distress. This is – according to the Diagnostic Statistical Manual, Volume 5 – the gold standard textbook for psychiatrists. In their world it’s a psychiatric disorder. But Dr. Ted Carrick, the developer of the discipline of functional neurology, feels it’s more important to emphasize the role of the abnormal functioning of the basal ganglia as the underlying functional causal mechanism as the personality disorder diagnosis label of “anxiety.”

The basal ganglia is a processing unit deep in the brain that decides whether we can have an action-like movement. It decides whether we can move our eyes, or have an emotion. When the basal ganglion is functioning well, technically, we are calm. However, when the basal ganglia starts to break down due to one of a variety of causes, tremors of the hand, restless leg syndrome or Tourette’s syndrome can occur. Anxiety is the result of some neurological phenomenon, except that a different part of the basal ganglion is involved in creating the disorder. There are two types of anxiety – productive and non-productive anxiety responses. An example of a productive anxiety response would be the frail

grandmother who sees her grandchild trapped in a dangerous situation – i.e., the child pinned under a car. Without thinking, she runs over to the car, lifts the car off her grandchild and saves the day. This represents a productive action, and occurred because Grandma’s fear-based response flooded her system with stress hormones that allowed her to produce a maximum muscular contraction effort far beyond what would be expected of a senior citizen under normal circumstances. Chronic fear-based anxiety responses are not productive. This is the person who has nothing fearful impending, and yet they’re constantly worrying about the future and what might happen. These are maladaptive fear-based responses and are not productive. continued on page 10

anxiety is defined as an excessive fear response and/or worry that interferes with functioning or causes significant distress. Panic attacks are neurologically similar in nature to anxiety. They too are not psychological, but are in fact fear-based physiological problems. Panic attacks occur when they are least expected (making it difficult to legitimately classify them as a psychological disorder). This unexpected panic reaction in turn creates more fear. You get hit with a sudden “panic attack” and your heart races above 100, you begin to sweat, you have chest pain and you’re worried you’ve just had a heart attack. The reason these symptoms occur is that there are imbalances in the fear processing circuits in the brain and there is excessive activation of the amygdala (the fear center of the brain). When you’re presented with a fearful circumstance, the amygdala sends different signals through the rest of your brain activating your fight/ flight response. A response that is primarily intended to be a “survival” mechanism. This response is the igniting and causative factor of both anxiety and panic disorders. It’s an over-firing fear center in the brain that, in the panic attack/anxiety sufferer, is more hyperactive and more sensitive to normal stimuli than in the average person’s brain. These igniting stimuli can be light, sound, exercise, autoimmune responses, surgeries, traumas, overwhelming infections and more. If your amygdala is over reactive, these stimuli can create sensitivity and, once it is stimulated by an emotional response, the fear-based attacks become chronic. Emotional or physical traumas can make the amygdala oversensitive. Traumas stimulate the amygdala and make it grow, thus increasing its ability to create fight/flight response at the drop of a hat. Back to the basal ganglion and its relationship to anxiety and panic attacks. Your frontal lobe has many functions. One of its most prominent functions is associated with thoughts and emotions. These can be positive emotions or fear-based emotions. To have these

10

BASAL GANGLIA emotions, the frontal lobe must get its command from the basal ganglia. One of the neurological pathways of the basal ganglion shuts off unwanted thoughts, and is dependent on frontal lobe functions as well. In anxiety and panic disorders, this frontal lobe function becomes abnormal and loses its ability to help the basal ganglion put the brakes on the amygdala fearbased response. The frontal lobe itself becomes overactive and there we are, we have anxiety and panic attacks better known in the functional neurological and functional metabolic world as an overfiring frontal lobe. So in summation, you have a brain that has been set up to be over reactive due to past emotional traumas enlarging your amygdala, that is then set off by one of the many triggers mentioned above that then overstimulate an already vulnerable amygdala, all of which overwhelms your frontal lobe which, along with the basal ganglion, loses its ability to put the brakes on the amygdala – and now you have anxiety and panic attack “disorders.” This same mechanism plays into generalized anxiety disorders, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders and phobias.

The standard approach in today’s world is drugs. But what the functional neurologists realized is that if you go deep into the brain and exercise and strengthen the weakened structures of the brain (frontal lobe, basal ganglion) then they become far more able to shut down these fight/flight responses (overactive amygdala) before they occur. Functional medicine came to realize that, by dealing with the major metabolic components of brain chemistry and normalizing them (blood sugar, Hashimoto’s, inflammation, food sensitivities), you could also decrease the above outlined neurological mechanisms and chemical responses to fear-based stimuli and reduce panic attacks and anxiety. Although counseling and drugs can be good short-or long-term solutions to both, it would appear that the functional approach of getting the brain to work better on its own without medication is a superior long-term approach relative to not creating many of the side effects associated with “psych” drugs, and allows the person suffering from “anxiety” or “panic disorders” to also avoid the stigma of being labeled with psychological “problems.” For more information, call Dr. Rutherford or Dr. Gates at 775-329-4402 or visit PowerHealthRenoNV.com See ad on page 9.

THRIVE

DOCUMENTARY A Review of the Video and Website Created by Foster and Kimberly Gamble By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

F

oster Gamble is a direct heir to the Proctor & Gamble fortune. He was raised with “power and privilege” but unlike what we might expect from such wealthy individuals, he and his wife have spent years researching why there is such a wide discrepancy between the haves and the have-nots on this planet. They want to know why billions have nothing and live in squalor and misery on less than a dollar a day while a tiny number at the top of the wealth pyramid live lives of incredible luxury, taking in more money each week than they could possibly spend in a lifetime. As a result

of their research, Foster and Kimberly have become convinced that there is an elite group of people working very hard to control the rest of us. As they followed the trail of money and control, they came upon a story of power and manipulation unlike anything they could have imagined. Their documentary shines a bright light on the activities of the families behind the big banking institutions, such as the Rothschilds, Rockefellers and Morgans, and how they and their corporations have manipulated and influenced almost every area of our lives,

from commerce and politics to media and food production. Guest experts explain in simple terms how these wealthy and powerful families brought about our fractional banking system; how their banks create money out of thin air then loan it to us and expect us to spend the rest of our lives paying it back, which we are well programmed to do. The video explores subjects such as the suppression of cures for cancer and other diseases, as Big Pharma focuses on developing chemicals only for treatments, not for cures. Why? Because when someone is cured they don’t need the meds any more. But when you’re just treated, you need the meds for the rest of your life, creating a flow of billions into the bank accounts of the pharmaceutical industry. This documentary and the supportive website (www.thrivemovement.com) cover 13 subjects, including Free Energy technology, economics, science, spirituality, media, justice, liberty, health, environment, education and even exopolitics. Some of the top scientists, inventors, doctors, authors, activists, visionaries and business leaders explain why their research as well as their own experiences have shown them that something is terribly wrong with the way things are going, not only in America,

Alternative to Lupron for Prostate Disease Cruciferous vegetables may help reduce risk of prostate cancer Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D. Most men who are taking the drug Lupron (or one of its close relatives) hate it. The reason is it turns men into women (hormonally). It is used to block the testosterone receptors that promote the growth of prostate cancer cells. Fortunately there is a supplement (and dietary intake) that can offer an alternative. The cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage and broccoli, are particularly rich sources of compounds such as indole-3-carbinol, which have been associated with reduced tumor occurrence in both humans and experimental animals. This chemical is found in vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, collards, mustard greens, radishes, watercress and turnips. DIM (Diindolylmethane) is the principal breakdown product of indole-3-carbinol in the body once it is absorbed through the digestive system. It has been shown in scientific studies to reduce the risk of prostate and other hormone-driven cancers by helping the body to make a better balance of the hormones. According to Michael Zeligs, M.D., author of “All About DIM,” a recent study of Seattle men showed that three or more servings of cruciferous vegetables a week can reduce prostate cancer risk by almost half! Androgen (testosterone) receptors control growth, proliferation and differentiation in the prostate and are expressed in nearly all human prostate cancers. Studies have shown that DIM represses androgen

expression and responsiveness as a part of an anti-growth effect on the cancer cells. These studies have shown that DIM not only slows the growth of human prostate cancer cells, it directly kills or promotes the death of these cells. Besides being the active phytonutrient promoting beneficial estrogen metabolism, DIM has recently been shown to actually treat breast cancer in animals! DIM appears to work in several ways. First it facilitates the conversion of estrogen to a less cancer promoting form. Second, it partially blocks the bad effects of estrogen and testosterone on cells. Third, it directly kills or inhibits cancer cells. And fourth, it reduces levels of free radicals, which can promote cancer by damaging DNA. All this and no side effects of any sort are seen when pure DIM is used, even in huge doses. Even when a usual dose of 40mg/day is increased to 450mg/day in human subjects!

but all over the world. After years of researching these subjects and interviewing experts, Foster and Kimberly Gamble have become convinced, along with a growing number of thoughtful citizens that a shadowy elite international group is well along on their agenda of total control. Before you dismiss this as a “conspiracy theory” be aware that you have been programmed by the corporate media to do just that. The video (which you can watch for free online) contains the basic information while the website adds to the knowledge in all subject areas, moves it forward and keeps it current, offering monthly seminars and lectures. Sixty-five million people have watched the documentary online; as a result of the positive intent of the message, many inventors and visionaries have contacted Foster and Kimberly with the hope of connecting with others who are working on solutions to the same problems. They have brought together more than a thousand people or groups who are now working together, either in person or over the internet. Examples of some seminar titles are

“What Does It Take to Stand Your Ground?” “Plant Medicine Journey”, “Who Owns Your Body?”, “Today’s Problems Become Tomorrow’s Solutions-Let’s Get Well!” and “How to Share Difficult Information without Losing Friendships”. There are also extensive archives which you can peruse for subjects in which you are particularly interested. This website is a gold mine of information, and documents everything that was shown in the video. Burying our heads in the sand and being described as “sheeple” is no longer an option. People are waking up. If you’ve been harmed by the housing collapse, the slow economy and the resultant lack of good jobs, you’re experiencing the American part of the global takeover plan. If you’re aware of how unusual this run-up to the 2016 election is, you know how many millions of Americans are mad, sick of the politicians and of the entire status quo and are trying to take charge of their own lives again. The answer is knowledge. Know what’s going on! This documentary and the fascinating full-of-info website is an excellent place to start.

Heart Problems Let me be clear – we love our cardiologists! They read our echocardiograms to look at heart structure and function and do the angiograms, which are the gold standard for finding blockages in our heart and neck arteries. Difficult high blood pressure patients and hearts out of rhythm are routinely treated with a broad spectrum of drugs. However, the underlying cause of many heart problems may be overlooked and treatments using nutrients, enzymes, herbs, homeopathic, isopathic, chelation and neural therapies have not been taught to them, and these integrative treatments frequently resolve heart issues and avoid more invasive and potentially toxic drug and surgical intervention.

Cayenne Pepper Of all the tools in our herbal emergency kit, herbal grade cayenne pepper is at the top of our list for heart, circulation, bleeding and seizure disorders. Cayenne is an herbal anticoagulant

and circulation normalizer. It can calm chest pain, angina, from coronary artery narrowing by the count of 10. Simply open a cap of cayenne and pour into a little warm water and drink – it can relieve symptoms quickly. TIA symptoms, little strokes or pre strokes, with visual distortion or flashing lights in the vision may also respond within a few minutes. Of course if symptoms persist go to the ER, but cayenne can help many vascular symptoms including high or low blood pressure and acute bleeding from the nose or other areas.

Hardening of the Arteries Chelation therapy is used to remove calcium and heavy metals from our body such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, aluminum and others. Recent studies have found it very helpful to reduce reoccurrence and death after heart attacks and strokes. 1 There are many chelating agents. Chelation comes from the Greek word “chelos,” the claw to grasp or bind. We have been using EDTA chelation therapy for over 40 years to improve circulation

Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

and open up arteries in the heart, legs and head. It binds with these metals and takes them safely out of the body to clear the load we all have. Plaquex, intravenous phosphatidylcholine (liquid lecithin), also sweeps out blockages in the arteries of the heart and body to open up circulation. These treatments are given by intravenous drips and by oral capsules and other routes. We have patients who have reversed serious heart damage with chelation therapy and others who chelate on the occasion of chest pain. Many of our patients have reversed carotid artery disease in the neck, reducing the likelihood of stroke with chelation therapy.

Heart Out of Rhythm There are many arrhythmias of the heart. Atrial fibrillation, an irregularly irregular heartbeat, has received much attention because of its tendency to cause strokes. Tachycardia, rapid heartbeats, heart blocks, missing beats, PVCs, premature ventricular contractions and uncomfortable hard

beats causing chest discomfort are also very common. Drug treatments for these disorders are more or less toxic depending on the drug; however there are numerous integrative and homeopathic treatments that may be effective. Magnesium is the one mineral that is deficient in the standard American diet and is very important for regulation of the heart rhythm. Magnesium glycinate is our favorite form of magnesium, but all forms are helpful for heart rhythm. It is a very important component for relaxing the blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.

Adrenal health and stress reduction is always important. If the adrenal is weak from any stress, then adrenalin and cortisol are pumped into the blood stream and cause rapid, irregular heart rates and the accompanying anxiety. Bio-identical progesterone rubbed into the forearms can slow down or stop the adrenalin reaction in a few minutes.

Homeopathic Remedies for Arrhythmias One of our favorite remedies for arrhythmias is homeopathic Digitalis. 2 This is not the same as the regular drug digitalis used for heart failure and also

rapid heart rate. This remedy is used in dilutions from 6C (diluted 1-to-100 six times) to 200 C, 1M (one-to-1,000) or much higher depending on how the patient tests on our homeopathic testing computer. It has relieved many cases of rapid heart rate and atrial fibrillation. Crateagus (Hawthorne berry) either in the herbal form or homeopathic dilution is great for arrhythmias and chest pain as is Cactus grandifloras, which relieves band-like chest pain. There are scores of homeopathic remedies that relieve heart symptoms. continued on page 18

Blood Thinners Over thickening of the blood is very common in heart disease. Many agents are responsible for sticky blood. As I mentioned in July’s Healthy Beginnings Magazine, root canaled teeth release scores of bacteria into the blood stream, which cause clotting. We can help evaluate root canal and other teeth responsible for heart disease, strokes, leg clots and lung clots. Regulat from Germany is a probiotic that thins the blood. Lumbrokinase, enzymes from earthworms, thin the blood as does nattokinase from fermented soy. Isopathics, fungal remedies originating in Germany, also normalize blood coagulation. Cayenne has already been mentioned as an anticoagulant.

Heart Failure Heart failure causes shortness of breath, inability to sleep flat down in bed, swollen ankles and fatigue. Mercury can be found 20,000 times higher in a heart failure heart than in healthy young individuals. Silver fillings contain 50 percent mercury, which outgasses into the saliva and breath every time one eats hot food

E VIL ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF

PT 1

Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

his article is the first in a series addressing the topic of evil. It is important for all people, I believe, to strive to give some accounting to evil – what is it, why does it exist, what is its role in our lives, how can we protect ourselves from it, etc. For unpleasant though the subject may be, evil is an ever-present and powerful part of life. There is no legitimate sidestepping the issue of evil, though various strategies are sometimes used to try and do this very thing. Here are some examples: “Evil is just an

artificial category developed by organized religion(s) to define and promote their own arbitrary moral code.” “Good and evil are spiritual constructs that have no place in a rational, scientific discussion of reality.” Or, “Life just happens. It is essentially random, without any rhyme or reason, good or evil behind any of it.” Even within the field of psychology the issue of evil is sometimes deflected on the supposed grounds that it is the proper domain of the priest or pastor rather than the psychotherapist.

We may deny the existence of a spiritual reality in our heads, but that only ensures that the same reality will eventually kick us in the butt (to put it lightly) later on. The choices we make, the values we live by, the beliefs we adopt all have an effect on what comes our way in life.

The reality, however, is that all psychological perspectives and interventions affect the spiritual life of the individual, and all spiritual and religious beliefs have ramifications for the psychology of the individual. For instance, an atheistic worldview is sometimes driven by unresolved anger, disappointment and loss in the individual’s life. Conversely, the ardent religious fundamentalist may be motivated more by self-righteous arrogance and psychological projection than by any real knowledge or relationship with his/her deeper self or God.

and progress of evil in itself. We may deny the existence of a spiritual reality in our heads, but that only ensures that that same reality will eventually kick us in the butt (to put it lightly) later on. The choices we make, the values we live by, the beliefs we adopt all have an effect on what comes our way in life. Jungian psychologist Morton Kelsey summarizes the issue well in his book, “Discernment: A Study in Ecstasy and Evil”:

becoming more conscious of your own attitudes and issues and how they trip you up, attention and caution regarding the different ways evil may enter your life seems to offer protection above and beyond the specific actions you take. It is as though evil shows respect for those who respect it. Those who ignore, deny or trivialize evil are more likely to be paid an eye-opening visit. What Is The Vampire FaceLift®?2

Facelift® Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Technology and the Art of Sculpting a Beautiful Face

Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

In our introductory, exciting episode titled “The Vampire Series,” in the August, 2016, issue of Healthy Beginnings Magazine, we introduced the concept extracting stem cells via Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as a means of stimulating new collagen, blood vessels and fatty tissue generation to “repair” maturing skin, hair and hormonal decline. PRP was developed, as many medical breakthroughs are, from scientific experimentation resulting from everyday seemingly innocuous events. In the case of PRP, we noticed that, several days after scraping a knee or elbow following a fall, a yellow “goo” will form around the scab.1 The “goo” consists of multi-potent stem cells, containing growth factors, 8 to be exact, sentinels lying dormant, waiting to be called upon to repair damaged tissue.

22

The Vampire FaceLift® combines our extracted platelet rich fibrin matrix with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, our preference is Juvederm, to deliver a youthful, naturally fresh new face. How Does the Vampire FaceLift® Work? In restructuring the human face we look to the master of masters, Leonardo da Vinci and his 15th century concepts of the ideal human. Based on the “Golden Ratio,” da Vinci’s theories are as relevant today as they were 500 years ago. The “Golden Ratio” is a mathematical progression defining facial proportion and symmetry. Simply stated, a symmetrical face, based on the “Golden Ratio,” is an attractive face.3

Study of the physiological progression of the wound from the moment of injury to completed healing renders us capable of replicating Mother Nature, essentially creating our own “goo.” Starting with a simple blood draw, we can extract, via a proprietary centrifugation technique, the essence of our own innate healing properties, i.e. the “goo,” technically known as platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), to grow new skin, collagen, fat, nerves and blood vessels. Healing open wounds exhibit a 5-fold increase in calcium concentration versus normal tissue. After isolating the platelet rich portion of the upper watery portion of a blood sample, we infuse calcium into the concentrate activating the growth factors to stimulate latent stem cells to create new, youthful tissue in the face, scalp, breast, sex organs, and joints and muscles. Though they sound “scary” or exotic, “The Vampire Series” are simply our way of taking Mother Nature’s healing properties from your own blood, hence the “Vampire” moniker.

When analyzing a patient for the Vampire Facelift®, we map the foundation of the face based on the “Golden Ratio.” We place hyaluronic acid fillers, i.e. Juvederm, to create a “scaffolding” or frame for our desired form. Next, we strategically inject the PRFM calcium infused “goo” into the voids left by aging and fat loss. The end product is a younger, fresh-face you. Skin quality, color and texture are noticeably improved. A youthful, natural beauty emerges without the pain, inconvenience, expense or downtime of surgical intervention. Surgical Facelift versus Vampire Facelift® Though surgical intervention is still the gold standard for lifting and tightening loose, sagging skin, it is not a cureall for the aging face. A surgical facelift still contributes to the underlying collapse and does little to improve skin quality. The Vampire Techniques lifts the face from the bone, improving volume, texture, color and integrity. The Vampire Facelift® is the perfect compliment to our proprietary Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Program, recently presented to more than 3,000 physicians at the May 2016 Academy of AntiAging Medicine’s 24th World Congress in Hollywood, Fla.

Blueberries are packed with vitamin C. One serving of blueberries delivers almost 25 percent of the daily requirement of vitamin C. The body needs vitamin C to form collagen in bones, cartilage, muscle and blood vessels, and vitamin C helps maintain healthy gums and a healthy immune system. Vitamin C has also been linked to improvement in mood, as people who have vitamin C deficiency often feel fatigued or depressed. Blueberries also contain a small amount of vitamin K, which plays a key role in helping the blood clot and preventing excess bleeding.

Blueberries are an excellent source of manganese and other minerals. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase, and plays an important role in bone development and in converting proteins, carbohydrates and fats into energy. Blueberries also contain minerals like potassium, copper, iron and zinc. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Copper is required for the production of red blood cells, and iron is required for red blood cell formation.

diabetes. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that's found in the fats in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. Although the body needs sodium to function properly (sodium helps maintain the right balance of fluids in your body and influences the contraction and relaxation of muscles), high-sodium intake can increase your blood pressure and your risk for heart disease.

Dietary fiber is best known for its ability to prevent or relieve constipation. However, a high-fiber diet also helps maintain bowel health, lowers cholesterol levels, controls blood sugar levels and helps in maintain a healthy weight.

Blueberries are low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. Household maintenance: Reduce your exposure to dust or pet dander by vacuuming regularly (use a fine filter), washing bedding, curtains and stuffed toys in hot water, and maintaining low humidity. Mold thrives in damp environments, so reduce moisture in your bathroom and kitchen by using ventilation fans or humidifiers.

Are you suffering from watery eyes, a runny nose and a boisterous, recurrent sneeze? You may have fallen victim to seasonal allergies, and you’re not alone. More than 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance, such as pollen. “When you have allergies, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen as harmful, even though it isn’t,” according to Mayo Clinic. “When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system’s reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system. The severity of allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor irritation to anaphylaxis — a potentially life-threatening emergency. While most allergies can’t be cured, a number of treatments can help relieve your allergy symptoms.” When it comes to fall allergies, weeds, pollen and molds are the main triggers. Hay Fever – an allergy caused by pollen or dust – and mold allergy symptoms can include: •

Sneezing

Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth

Runny, stuffy nose

Watery, red or swollen eyes (conjunctivitis)

Coughing or wheezing

Other solutions: When pollen is high, stay inside and keep windows and doors closed. Wear a mask when gardening, mowing the lawn or engaging in any outdoor activity.

references: If you’re tired of clearing your itchy throat and hauling around a giant box of tissue, try these home remedies and find relief this season: Saline solution: Create your own saline nasal solution and rinse out your sinuses using a Neti Pot or speciallydesigned nasal squeeze bottle. Rinsing your nose with a saline solution will help keep the nasal passages open by washing out thick or dried mucus. However, improper use of a Neti Pot or other device can lead to infection, according to Mayo Clinic. Rinse your irrigation device after each use with distilled, sterile, previously boiled and cooled, or filtered water and leave open to air dry.
