t is hard to believe that fall is officially here and we are fast approaching the busy holiday season. For many of us, the holidays represent the time of year that is extra jam packed with events, family obligations and entertaining. During this busy time of year, it is extra important to find time each day to care for yourself. Making a point to momentarily remove yourself from the hustle and bustle and the pressures of your “to do” list will help to reduce stress. Take a few moments of mindfulness to stop and quiet your mind. You can clear your head by focusing on your breath. These few moments can renew your energy and help to lower stress.
Take a look at this month’s articles on the benefits of being in nature to support your effort to create mindfulness. In addition, we are continuing our series of articles on the thyroid with more valuable information about the importance of a healthy thyroid. This month, we are pleased to welcome our new Editor, Kippy Spilker. We are fortunate to have Kippy’s expertise to help continue our mission of providing valuable content about health for all aspects of your body, mind and soul. You can reach Kippy at Editor@hbmag.com Check out the Healthy Beginnings Facebook page for daily tips on health and well being. We would love to hear from you on Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram. Here’s to a Happy, Healthy October!

A Little Sweet,
Blackberry-Jalapeño Jelly Submitted by Kippy Spilker
B
lackberries are my favorites of all the berries. In our backyard we have what I lovingly call our, “Feed me, Seymour!” blackberry bush – every year it consumes more and more of the yard, which means all our friends and family are getting blackberry-jalapeño jelly for the holidays this year.
1. Put blackberries in a pot with about 2 cups of water. Cook over low heat until the berries begin to soften and mash easily with a wooden spoon. Remove from heat and strain through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, reserving all the liquid. You want to end up with about 4 cups of blackberry juice.
High in antioxidants, blackberries can also help keep your brain alert and the Vitamin K level has been known to aid in muscle relaxation. They are rich in Vitamin C, low in calories and high in fiber, all of which make them a great choice for diabetics or anyone trying to lose or maintain weight healthfully.
2. Pour the juice back into your pot (after rinsing it to remove any pulp loosened by the heating) and mix in the pectin and jalapenos with ½ cup of sugar. Bring this mixture to a full boil for 1 minute. Add the remaining 3 cups of sugar and return to a rolling boil until the sugar has dissolved, which usually takes about 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat and continue to stir for about 3-4 minutes, to diminish the amount of bubbles or foam. If you skip this step, it doesn’t hurt anything, this is purely cosmetic.
The capsaicin in jalapeños is a great anti-inflammatory, and has also been shown to help clear the sinuses and block the neuropeptide known as Substance P, which transmits pain to the brain. The result is, studies have shown, jalapeños might be able to help you with your headaches. In addition, the flavonoids and Vitamins C and A in these peppers are great for lowering blood pressure.
1.75 oz powdered low-sugar pectin
3. Ladle into sterile jars, leaving about ¼” of space at the top. Seal, and place in boiling water (make sure the water comes to about 2” above the top of the jars) for about 10 minutes. Remove from water and let cool on your counter. You should hear the popping as the jars cool and the lids pop down. Be sure to refrigerate any jars after you open them.
3.5 cups sugar
VARIATIONS
3-4 jalapenos, seeded and finely minced
Replace the sugar with your favorite sugar substitute. I like Xylitol, which is naturally found in blackberries anyway.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED About 8-9 cups of fresh blackberries
7 half-pint canning jars with lids and rings
There are other ways to de-seed blackberries, including a Foley Food Mill, which doesn’t require cooking the berries prior to making your jelly. If you choose not to de-seed, you can go through the first part of step one, and then just mash up your berries and make jam instead. Last year I used whole berries to make 2-ingredient preserves: just blackberries and raw honey. Delicious, but for me the seeds were a bit much. Whatever way you choose to use them, enjoy those big, beautiful fall berries. Stop by HBMag on Facebook and tell us your favorite uses. We’d love to see your photos, too! REMOVE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS FROM
Any Scene Or Memory
Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR
D
o you have negative scenes or memories that are renting space in your mind and seem to be something you can’t evict? Embarrassing or hurtful scenes that may be holding you back and causing you to “settle for” a less-thanachievement-filled life? Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between real and pretend. So if you’re regularly thinking about those negative scenes, running them as an unending tape loop, a part of your mind thinks that experience actually happened to you today and gives you the emotions to match. Those negative emotions are not what you need in order to move forward. They’ll block you at every turn. Acupressure (no needles, just gentle tapping on certain acupoints on your body) can help remove those negative emotions. Combined with the right words, you will soon find that the offending scene or memory has morphed into another scene altogether, a much more pleasant scene. And when the scene changes in your mind, so do the emotions. AND there’s another bonus to removing negative emotions. We know that all traumas settle in the cells somewhere, not just in our minds. As the scene and emotions change, the place where that trauma has settled in your body … leaves. Sometimes you can even feel it leave, or you may feel tingly or lightweight, like you were going to float out of your chair. This change in emotion is not a temporary thing – it’s permanent. You still have the memory, but it no longer means anything. All the emotional charge will be gone.
8
And most of the time, the memory itself, with no emotions to anchor it, simply fades away, leaving you free as if that embarrassing or hurtful thing never happened. Dr. Fred Alan Wolf, a quantum physicist featured in the documentary What the Bleep Do We know? Says, “The world is malleable, infinitely changeable; not only are we capable of changing the present, but also the past.” That’s hard to wrap your mind around, but if perception is everything, and we have removed the negative emotions from a memory, that is indeed “changing the past.” He may have meant changing the past in a physics understanding, but everything is energy, and physics is just one way to explain how energy works. Emotion is energy in motion. It‘s an energy in itself, just like our thoughts are. We were never taught that our thoughts had an effect on anything, but we now know that thoughts have their own vibrational frequency, like a radio signal. They affect everything and everyone around us. They cause certain emotions to surface; those emotions drive our words and actions, which make up and define our life. So if we can control our thoughts, we can control our life. We are both transmitter and receiver. Haven’t you met someone you instantly disliked? Your subconscious mind picked up the vibrational frequencies of their thoughts, attitudes and intentions; picked up their state of being, and gave you an impression. You were also sending out vibes of who YOU are. It would be immensely helpful if these vibes

A Young Woman’s Experience with
Archetypal Evil Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
A
24 year-old woman experienced the following events, which I am fortunate to share in her own words:
In the fall of 1972 my mother, a retired university professor, was making a relocation to live in La Paz, Baja California. She packed up her Chevy Blazer, and one of her freshman English students, Tom, and I went with her. We were driving down the route of the Baja 1000 which at that time was mostly unpaved, camping along the way. After several days we arrived at the town of Guerrero Negro (Black Warrior), which is on the west coast near Bajia Escamon—famous as the wintering

place of grey whales. There are extensive salt pans attached to the bay. These shallow artificial lagoons cover miles and are enclosed by earthen dikes barely one car wide. According to a map we had it looked like we could drive out across the salt pans and get a look at the bay, so we gave it a try. Unfortunately, after going what seemed like many, many miles, losing sight of actual land, everything was flat and featureless, sun glaring intensely off ominous dark water all around. At times only inches of crumbly
dirt was keeping the Blazer from falling in and all we could see was a thin straight lane stretching to the horizon. We realized the likelihood of achieving the destination of our side trip was pretty remote, also it was getting late. Luckily we found a place to turn around and did not have to back-up the whole return trek, which was spooky enough driving forward. Finally off the salt pans, with the sun already setting, we drove up a small

Dr. Simeons’ Transformative Discovery Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
A
n interesting approach to the epidemic of obesity is reviewed in Dr. A.T.W. Simeons’ paper Pounds & Inches, A New Approach to Obesity. (hcgdietinfo.com)
Dr. Simeons was born in London and graduated summa cum laude at the University of Heidelberg. Early in his career he became engrossed in the study of tropical diseases and joined the School of Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. In 1931, he went to India, where he stayed for 18 years. He was awarded the Red Cross Order of Merit by the Queen of England for discovering the use of an injectable remedy for malaria, and a new method of staining malaria parasites, now known as the “Simeons stain.” During the Second World War he held several important posts under the government of India, conducting extensive research on bubonic plague and leprosy control. In 1949 he moved to Rome, treating patients at the Salvator Mundi International Hospital. During his career he authored several medical books and contributed to many scientific publications. Dr. Simeons, M.D., was regarded as one of the top research doctors in Europe. Traveling the world, Dr. Simeons became fascinated with the unique and rare condition known as obesity. Until this time in history the majority of people that were slightly overweight, fat, or obese were the rich. (Please read his paper listed above and the The Weight Loss Cure by Kevin Trudeau for the complete historical evolution of his search for the cause of obesity.) After many false starts into the cause of obesity including psychological and hormone issues, he stumbled across scientific papers which led him to believe that the source of problems for the obese patient, which defied all attempts at permanent weight loss, resided in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus resides deep in the brain and gives instructions to the pituitary gland on how to regulate all the body’s hormones, thyroid, adrenal, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. With Simeons’ HCG program, this regulation is achieved by injecting very small doses of HCG, human chorionic gonadotrophin, the substance made in the placenta of pregnant women. Pregnant women produce one million units of HCG per milliliter of blood and his treatment regimen uses only 125 units per day, a very small amount.
12
October 2015 • Healthy Beginnings
The program also features a very strict 500 calorie per day diet which Simeons claims is easily tolerated without hunger due to the HCG injections and can usually result in a one pound per day weight loss, slightly more in men than in women. Organic foods are recommended and must be studied extensively before undertaking the HCG program, with food intake being very strictly controlled during the program’s duration. Simeons found that HCG helps many health issues and is particularly helpful in removing areas of stubborn, deep fat without depleting protein, protective joint or organ supportive fat, and doesn’t cause anemia or nutritional deficiencies. Modern authors such as Trudeau suggest a period of detoxification prior to the program for a more successful outcome. This program should definitely be supervised by a physician experienced with the protocol.

n Part 1 of “ Patient Mysteries, Are You Thyroid Deficient?” we reviewed two cases illustrating common clinical presentations of thyroid disease, the anatomy and physiology of the thyroid gland, symptoms of low thyroid output and common misunderstandings about the cause of thyroid disease. In Part 2, “Patient Mysteries, Are You Thyroid Deficient?” we reviewed diagnostic techniques and offered treatment modalities for a variety of thyroid maladies including medication, supplements and dietary advice. In Part 3 we explore the root causes of thyroid disease. An estimated 12 percent of the population of the United States will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime. 1 Of those, 90% by some estimates are autoimmune in nature.2 Autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system confuses our own body's tissue as a foreign invader, attacking itself in a mistaken attempt to protect itself. The incidence of autoimmune thyroid disease, Hashimoto’s (hypo) Thyroiditis, and Graves' (hyperthyroidism) Disease doubled from 1932 through 1976. From 1976 through 2010 it went from a relatively rare, 10% of all cases of thyroid disease, to an estimated 90% of all cases of hypothyroidism. 2 I turn to my two wise, elderly, street smart aunts, Freida, age 89, and Audrey, age 83, for a practical explanation. Aunt Freida, G-d love her, with thinning hair, poor eyesight, a beautiful singing voice, wisdom from the old country, and more than a little dementia, (at age 87 she plowed her 1987 Chevy Citation into a legally parked $80,000 BMW 750i. A week later she asked, “Where is my car?” “You wrecked it.” “ I did?”), after another calamity in my life, would shake her bony index finger at me, ala Bill Clinton and proclaim, “You are the cause of your own trouble.” Aunt Audrey, age 83, a little less forgetful and just as outspoken, summed up my worldly troubles thusly: “You dumb boy, you.” In a nutshell, Aunt Freida and Aunt Audrey, in their own way, summarized the root cause of thyroid disease better than any Harvard based researcher. The thyroid attacks itself, causing its own troubles. It attacks itself, falling for the same insincere “line” over and over again, because it is dumb. The major root causes of autoimmunity in the thyroid gland are 1) gastrointestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome), 2) heavy metal toxicity, 3) infectious diseases, 4) adrenal insufficiency, or “burnout,” 5) iodine and 6) nutrient deficiency.
14
DEFIC Part 3 The Root Cause of Thyroid Disease While each is a seemingly disparate entity, the mechanism of action in every instance, be it a GI, toxic metal, infection, adrenal, iodine or other nutrient issue, is essentially the same. Molecular mimicry is the term used when one set of tissues closely resembles another totally different set of tissues. Thyroid molecules, unfortunately, closely resemble, in one form or another, all of the above “disease” entities. When the brain detects that circulating thyroid is low, it instructs the pituitary gland, via Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, to instruct the thyroid to produce more storage hormone (T4) and usable hormone (T3). However, if there are chemically similar, but foreign invaders present, the thyroid will utilize them, thinking it is producing thyroid hormone. The body eventually realizes it does not have the proper amount of thyroid hormone on board to function properly. It then signals the brain to produce more (false) hormone. Eventually the immune system is alerted, rushes to protect the body from these invading entities, causing inflammation and end organ damaging. Therefore, following the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and American Thyroid Association, standard treatment of hypothyroidism, replacement with levothyroxine,4 and its companion declaration, “Any treatment of thyroid disease other than desiccated T4 (levoxyI, levothyroxine, or Synthroid), is outside the realm of medicine,”5 is patently ridiculous. Without treating the root cause, the disease entity will continue ad infinitum. A 55 gallon drum of synthetic thyroid replacement hormone would never be sufficient treatment. (We covered synthetic versus natural hormone replacement in Part II.) In the case of the gastrointestinal tract, gluten, lactose and

night shades damage the intestinal lining, leading to improper nutrient absorption. Food particles are misinterpreted as foreign bodies. The immune system reacts by creating antibodies, setting up the dysfunctional autoimmune scenario cascade. Mercury, in sushi and dental fillings, perchlorate in fireworks and fertilizer, and nitrates in fertilizer and processed or cured meats like hot dogs and bacon, are the main molecularly similar heavy metal and toxic players. Infectious disease mimics include Herpes, Ebstein-Barr (Mononucleosis), and Hepatits C viruses, Yersinia enterocolitica (food poisoning), and H. pylori (stomach ulcers) bacterial infections.
CIENT?
Excess cortisol is the body's response to chronic stress leading to “burnout” or adrenal fatigue. Cortisol signals the brain to lower the production of other hormones until the stress passes. In this day and age we are never far from stress, often creating it if none exists (you are the cause of your own problems). Thyroid hormone is produced on the same pathway as cortisol and is thus unwittingly lowered. In addition, the thyroid hormone that is produced is in the form of the inert, or reverse, T3 we spoke of in Part II. Iodine, a member of the halogen family, is necessary for the production of T4. Fluoride, found in toothpaste; chlorine, found in swimming pool water; and bromine, found in flour, (a gluten-halogen double whammy) are also halogens. They mimic iodine, causing displacement and thyroid dysfunction. Lastly, a deficiency in a variety of nutrients, including selenium, magnesium, and zinc among others, can cause molecular mimicry and autoimmune dysfunction. In future issues, we will exam examine in depth, each root cause and provide suggestions for remedies. In the interim, take note that while the root causes are different, the thyroid interprets each insult in the same manner.

hen medicines have failed, BioPhotonic Therapy or Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation has been shown to provide benefit. It was first discovered and utilized in the United States over 80 years ago and has been used to treat over 1 million patients with significant results and little or no side effects. Over 200 medical studies have been published showing the ability to super charge the immune system and kill bacteria, viruses, and spirochetes in the blood. It has also been proven to improve circulation and oxygenation of the tissues, increase metabolism of cholesterol, uric acid and glucose, cut inflammation and reduce tissue pain. The American Cancer Society says of this type of treatment, “clinical trials look promising for the treatment of immune system diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and rejection of transplanted organs.” Published medical reports show its use in asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis and wound infections, as well as viral infections such as acute and chronic hepatitis, shingles, polio, mumps, measles, mononucleosis, HIV and Lyme disease. Circulatory conditions such as thrombophlebitis, peripheral vascular arterial disease, diabetic ulcers, non-healing wounds and even toxic blood infections have all been helped with this treatment. More recent research has proven that intravenous light therapy triggers deactivation/elimination of toxins, increased oxygen saturation, activation of antibody production, reduction of inflammation, increased energy production in the cells and improved elasticity of the red blood cells.

Photochemistry studies have revealed the fascinating interaction between light and the biological world. It is not just light, it is light of very exact frequencies (colors) that create very specific effects. The clinical effects of light therapy stem from the activation of photoreceptors in the cells that possess unique light absorbing structures. Following light stimulation (exposure), the electrons within the unique photoabsorbing structures become excited. Electron excitation modulates the physiology of the photoreceptor, which in turn, affects all biochemical pathways directly and indirectly connected with the photoreceptor. Light specificity observed in biology shares similarities with the photoelectric effect seen in solar panels, which describes that certain metals, when exposed to specific wave lengths (frequencies) of light, will emit electrons. Pathogens (bacteria, viruses and spirochetes), which are much smaller than normal cells, absorb up to 5 times as much photonic energy. The healthy cells remain intact while the diseased cells are killed. Before this, there has not been a non-drug therapy that is so simple to use and has a positive effect on so many disorders. When Spine Surgery is Necessary, Can New Innovations in Technique and Technology Speed Recovery? Article provided by James J. Lynch, MD and Edward C. Perry, MD
I
n most cases, flare ups of back or neck pain will not require spine surgery. The majority of spine conditions can be treated non-surgically with anti-inflammatories, injection therapy and physical therapy to help relieve pain. In addition to pain relief, patients who attend physical therapy learn specialized stretching and strengthening exercises that can make the spine stronger and more resistant to future occurrences. If conservative treatments fail to relieve back or neck pain symptoms and spine surgery is necessary, new innovations and techniques have pioneered better ways for the surgeon to access the spine.
In contrast to traditional open spine surgery that requires a large incision causing more damage to muscles and tissues, minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS) has become the leading way to treat spine conditions. Benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery over traditional spine surgery include: • Shorter hospital stay, (many procedures can be performed as outpatient or 23 hour stay), • Less post-operative pain and blood loss, • Faster return to work and activities, • Lower risk of infection

Moreover, if spine surgery is necessary it is important to be informed about your options. Unfortunately, there are surgeons that may use the term "minimally invasive spine surgery" in marketing to attract patients. But in fact, the patient may end up with a traditional, open spine surgery. While beneficial for patients, minimally invasive spine surgery requires a great deal of additional training for the surgeon to become proficient. SpineNevada has been performing minimally invasive spine surgery techniques since 2002. The neurosurgeons are fellowship-trained in spine and considered regional leaders in minimally invasive spine surgery and outpatient spine surgery.

the benefits of being in Written by Ashley Aarti Cooper
N
ot long ago, people young and old lived attuned to one another and to the rhythms of nature. Over the last century or so, life has sped up faster than ever before. People now live most of their over-scheduled lives plugged in, indoors and out of touch. There is a quiet revolution, however, as people begin to yearn for the great outdoors and connection once again. A growing body of research is taking root across the planet as we rediscover what is now aptly called ecotherapy. Ecotherapy exists alongside Nature Deficit Disorder, a phrase coined and spread by Richard Louv. The notion is that our modern lifestyles and our tendency to become driven to distraction keep us from fully experiencing our worlds and our own potential by robbing us of the benefits of time spent in nature. These benefits permeate all levels of our existence from childhood through old age. Being outside helps us recover from mental fatigue and restores our ability to process information. By decreasing our mind’s over activity,
20
nature helps our thoughts become clearer, sharper and more creative. Taking easy advantage of these benefits, progressive “forest schools” schedule classes out of doors to enhance student performance, and homes for the elderly utilize horticultural therapy to increase quality of life. Nature even heals us. In the 1980s, Japan began formalizing the practice of “forest bathing,” or shinrin-yoku. Shinrin-yoku is the slow, meditative experience of walking in nature with directed focus on the elements and senses. Studies held in the lab and outdoors, as well as in prisons and hospitals, have discovered nature’s benefits begin immediately and last for several days after exposure. These benefits include: reduced blood pressure, reduced stress levels (as measured in salivary cortisol), improved mood (perhaps owing to a friendly dirt bacteria which causes the brain to produce serotonin), increased energy levels (thanks to trees’ essential oils), and boosted immune systems. The latter occurs because trees give off organic compounds that encourage the body’s production of natural killer cells which fight abnormal
cells and speedup recovery time after surgery or illness. As the studies continue to come out, the facts echo what we already know intuitively: being in nature feels good physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. When in nature, the brain quiets down a bit and we become more curious about the world around us. The world comes alive, and so do we. Introducing for Acute and Chronic Pain Written by Dr. William N. Cleafield, D.O.
T
uesday, July 18, 1995 was a typical hot and humid day in Northeast Pennsylvania. With children, Matthew 11 and Jamie 9, we tended a backyard garden before work (for me) and camp (for them.) Despite poor growing conditions due to excessive moisture including a near-flood that summer, our crops flourished. Unlike our neighbors who struggled that summer, Matt and Jamie had the good fortune to have a father who was one of only two physician acupuncturists in the area. Our "experiment" was to place acupuncture needles in the stems of half of the crops. I'd somewhat made a name for myself, in the physician acupuncture community earlier that year with the publication of an article "Form Follow Function, Treatment of Head and Neck Injuries With Medical Acupuncture," in the journal "Medical Acupuncture." 1 It was so successful, I taught workshops of the technique, was nominated to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and elected Secretary of that organization. Acupuncturing the garden was an act of desperation. In the winter of 1995, our Reiki Master Judith H. left two tubs of impatiens to my care while she traveled two weeks to India. Three days in, both sets of flowers were near death.
Hoku, LI 4, the point on the web between the thumb and index finger, buzzed up a storm. I looked at my hand, then the dying plants, then my hand, then the dying plants. I recalled a story from an old time Wilkes Barre, (Pa.) gal. She grew up on an apple orchard and when one of the trees was dying, her father would take a nail and hammer it into the trunk. "Saved many a tree that way." Nothing to lose, I shrugged. I ran the point finder up and down the plant stems and viola, there was electrical activity in several spots. With my trusty #30 1/4 inch DBC Korean Needles I stabbed the "points" on every other stem. That was on Friday. Sunday, two days later, something caught my eye in the window where I'd left the plants. The needled stems were standing at attention, and by the morning of Judith's return, buds had formed. On the last day in February, the 28th, in Northeast Pennsylvania, without a greenhouse, Judith's impatiens bloomed. Matt, Jamie and I were so excited we couldn't wait for summer. Every year we grew a garden of tomatoes
I had ordered and received, that week, an electronic point finder. I tried it on myself.

(beef steak), zucchini, squash, pumpkins (that grew up the side of a fence), watermelons whose vines stretched from the garden all the way across the back lawn, and giant sunflowers.
the above protocol, we treat acute and chronic neck, back, and extremity pain and strains, and with a few modifications, migraine headaches and pre and post op pain.
While tending the garden that morning, I received a phone call from Walter Reed Army Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. "Colonel Richard Niemtzow, U.S. Air Force wishes to speak with you."
A brief word about libido. We have successfully lessened poor sexual desire and performance, using a modified protocol. This is especially helpful to bridge the gap for those beginning bioidentical hormone therapy, as it can take 3-6 weeks to get adequate blood levels. It also enhances sexual fulfillment.
Military? A Colonel in the U.S. Air Force wants to speak to me? Uh, oh. What did I do now? "Dr. Clearfield?." Authoritative, but not menacing. "I've read of work and would like to spend time observing you." Eh, sure. Far be it from me to refuse a request from the U.S. Military.
Acupuncture acts by down regulating (diminishing) Cytokine proinflammatory markers IL-1b, IL-2, IL-6, IL-12, Il 17, IFN-g, and TNF-a, and up regulating anti-inflammatory markers IL-4 and IL-10. 5
Colonel Niemtzow in full dress uniform presented himself that summer. Instead of the stern, snarling grunt, as depicted by Hollywood, Dr. Niemtzow was a soft spoken man, with a gentle touch and an extreme, almost embarrassing humility. The kids liked him, too. Fast forward twenty years, the pupil has far outperformed the teacher. Dr. Niemtzow took the role as editor of the journal "Medical Acupuncture" and turned it into a world class publication. He is a world leader in innovative medical acupuncture in both the civilian and military worlds. His signature achievement, "Battlefield Acupuncture," revolutionized on-the-spot (hence "Battlefield") treatment of soldiers injured in combat. At home, Dr. Niemtzow adapted his technique for all types of acute and chronic pain syndromes. It delivers significant relief in minutes with relief lasting hours, days, weeks, and even months depending on presenting pathology and the duration treatment. Battlefield therapy, like all acupuncture, is cumulative. 2 The more it is performed, the more effective it becomes and the longer it lasts. Our instruments include small ASP gold needles, electrical stimulation and cold laser. As his original teacher, I take no credit but am proud to present his work. Battlefield Acupuncture Points 3 For an experienced acupuncturist, the technique is simple. Beginning with the dominant hand side, gold ASP semipermanent needles are inserted in the above designated points in the order listed below. 4 The first needle is placed in the cingulate gyrus of the dominant hand ear. The patient ambulates for a minute to determine pain attenuation. If none, a second ASP needle is inserted into the cingulate gyrus on the opposite ear. The patient is again ambulated. A pain level of 0-1 (out of 10, ten representing the worst pain imaginable) is the goal. If pain remains, a third ASP needle is placed in the anterior thalamus in the ear that produces the most pain attenuation. The patient ambulates once more. ASP needles are placed in a sequential manner into omega 2, Shen Men and point zero, stopping when the desired (0-1) pain level is obtained. I have used all five points on both ears exactly twice. Battlefield techniques create a pain free, narcotic free, side effect free, method of rapid pain relief. With

Neuropeptides, Substance P, Neurokinin A, VIP, Bradykinin, and Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide are all positively affected by acupuncture. 6 Battlefield Acupuncture is a technique that is simple and effective. No clothing need be removed as the outer ear is readily accessible. There is no danger of overdose or narcotic dependency. I am proud to introduce Dr. Niemtzow's technique to the Reno area and know it will find widespread use for a variety of conditions. For More information, contact Dr. William N. TOMATO-BASIL BISQUE
T
his is by far my most frequentlyrequested potluck dish. It’s the first to disappear at work luncheons and soup parties, and thankfully isn’t all that difficult to make. There is a lot of room for variation, based upon dietary needs, and this is a perfect use for that end-of-season tomato harvest. We pressure can huge batches of this soup to use throughout winter and to give as gifts. It’s always great to have home-canned soups on hand to deliver to sick friends or to help fill up a gift basket. This recipe will feed about 6-8 people. INGREDIENTS • 1/2c butter • 2T minced garlic • 1c cooking sherry • 1/2c roughly chopped fresh basil
• 2T Better Than Bouillon soup base • 102 oz. canned whole peeled organic tomatoes (or about 7.5 pounds of fresh tomatoes, blanched and peeled) • 1T cayenne pepper • Optional: 1c heavy cream* DIRECTIONS Melt the butter on medium heat and add the garlic. Let it cook for a minute or two, but don’t let it brown or it’ll lose its sweetness. Add the sherry and basil and let cook for about another 5 minutes. Stir in the soup base and dump in the entire can(s) of tomatoes (including the liquid). If you’re using fresh garden tomatoes, add enough water for the tomatoes to float. Stir in the cayenne
pepper. Cook on medium heat (low boil) for about 20-25 minutes. Transfer (in stages, because it’s way too much to fit all of it into the blender at once) to the blender and puree until all the chunks are gone. Then pour in a bit of the heavy cream and blend again. After you blend it all, strain it with a very fine strainer to get rid of the seeds. Make sure to put all of the soup back into one big container and stir, because even though you’ll try to keep everything even, some mixtures will have more liquid, and some have more tomato, and some will have more or less cream, so you have to mix it all together to make it consistent. *Please note, if you are canning this soup, do not add the cream. I actually prefer the taste without it, but a lot of people like the thicker, creamier texture.
CREAMY BUTTERNUT SQUASH BISQUE I never knew how much I loved squash until I tasted them in soups. This recipe is quick and easy to make, especially if you can find pre-cut squash at your local market. INGREDIENTS • 2 C cubed butternut squash • ½ or 1 whole onion, largely chopped • 2T Better Than Bouillon soup base • ¾ - 1 cup heavy cream • 1-2 T nutmeg • ½ - 1 T white pepper DIRECTIONS Put the squash and onion in a pot with just enough water to cover it. Add the
26
nutmeg and pepper. Bring slowly to a low boil and continue until the squash is easily cut with a fork, about 20 min from start to finish. Add the soup base and cook for a minute or two more, until it's well mixed in. Remove from heat and put half in the blender, blend until smooth. Add half the cream. Pour into a serving dish, and then repeat with the remaining ingredients. For an extra little treat, garnish with fresh shredded Parmesan.

VEGAN CURRIED BUTTERNUT SQUASH BISQUE WITH CASHEW CREAM Recipe by Lauren Keating of Healthy Delicious, www.healthy-delicious.com INGREDIENTS • 1 medium butternut squash • 1 tablespoon olive oil • ½ onion, chopped • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tablespoon hot Madras curry powder • 4 cups reduced sodium vegetable stock • ¼ cup loosely packed fresh cilantro, • chopped (for garnish) For the Cashew Cream • 1/3 cup cashews • 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk (or other non-dairy milk) • 1 tablespoon lime juice • ½ teaspoon olive oil • 1 generous pinch sea salt DIRECTIONS Heat the oven to 400ºF. Cut the squash in half, length-wise, and scoop out the seeds. Place on a baking sheet, cut side down. Roast the squash for 30-40 minutes, or until it's very soft and the skin starts to bubble. Remove from the oven and let cool. Peel away the skin. Heat the olive oil in a soup pot. Add the onions and garlic; cook 4-5 minutes, until soft but not brown. Stir in the curry powder and cook one minute. Add the squash and vegetable stock. Cook 5-10 minutes, or until heated through. Transfer to a blender and blend until smooth. Serve topped with cashew cream and chopped parsley. FOR THE CASHEW CREAM Soak the cashews in 1 cup of water for at least 30 minutes. Drain. Add the soaked nuts, almond milk, lime juice, and oil to your blender; blend on high until smooth. Season to taste with salt.
Curry powder, a blend of several spices, boasts many heath benefits, from improved digestive health to reduced inflammation to anti-cancer properties. Probably the most valuable spice found in curry powder is turmeric, which contains curcumin. In recent studies, curcumin has been found to reduce the plaque deposited in neural pathways of the brain, by free radicals. It stimulates the immune system, eliminating the amino acids that make up the plaque, reducing cognitive decline and the chances of Alzheimer’s disease. While there is no direct correlation at this time, the rate of occurrence of Alzheimer’s in India is significantly lower than many other countries.

Follow Healthy Beginnings on Pinterest Nature shows us what it means to let go and trust in the seasons. And this is our nature as well, there is in each of us a rhythm of growth, letting go, deep rest, and newness. Many times what keeps us from fully experiencing this cycle is our resistance to letting go. It’s our human nature to ‘keep the leaves’ on until our new desire is reached, however we must let go of that which we no longer desire to prepare ourselves to receive that next great thing. Suppose that we have a desire; we have a clear picture of what it is that we want. For example, we want to experience greater health, prosperity, loving relationships, freedom, or joy. In the Cosmic Intelligence each of these desires are expressing simultaneously and infinitely, they are already present in the blueprint of life, if they were not, we would not be conscious of our desire. It’s through our Self-awareness that we seek this greater experience, and that is Self with a capital ‘S’, meaning it is the universal Self, the Higher Self, or God Self. This Higher Self is always seeking expression for greater good for it knows no opposite. The trees don’t worry about their leaves falling to the ground or about the dark of winter, they know that spring will come again and summer will fruit. There is tremendous freedom in this faith, there is wisdom in leaning into the fall, our personal
fall, and releasing the old patterns and beliefs that hamstring what it is that we want to emerge. If, for example, you are seeking greater financial freedom in your life, most of our outer experience tells us; save your money, cut back on your spending, and work harder. But the spiritual reality of life is that it is wildly abundant, infinite, and eternal, life does not know lack, it doesn’t speak the language of cut backs, budgets, and savings accounts. It only knows evolution, sustenance, flow, and creation. To tap into the creative power, the one creative power within ourselves, it requires that we ‘let go,’ we drop the outer idea of financial freedom and invite into our consciousness the spiritual reality; life is abundant! Eric Butterworth in his book, Spiritual Economics says, “You are an expression of the creative flow, entitled to as constant support as the lilies of the field.” We must shift our thoughts from thinking that we are undeserving to we are entitled. Entitlement might seem like a very big jump for some, but in truth we live and breathe and have our being in Spirit, so as an arm is to the body and is entitled to all the sensorial benefits of the body, we are to Spirit and entitled to all the aspects of good experiences in all life inherent to Spirit. So what needs to be dropped? What is it that can be let go of to serve as compost for the growth we want to know? What do we need to shed to welcome the season of what we desire most?

Quantum Touch The Power to Heal By Richard Gordon Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR
Q
uantum Touch explains how to use your body’s natural energy system to heal yourself and to assist others in their own healing. Many well-known doctors feel that Energy Healing is the medicine of the future. Richard Gordon has been using this system to heal himself and to assist others for decades. He understands that the body has its own innate knowledge of how to heal; that it has a template, or blueprint of perfection, and is always trying to get back to that blueprint. The practitioner in this system is just that – a person who has taken the training and has the intention and knowledge to assist the client in his/her own healing process. The client is the healer. Richard understands that we cannot heal anyone except ourselves. The body knows how to heal, and, with some assistance in the form of directed high frequency energy from another person, can do just that. This author understands that each organ, system and cell in our body has its own vibrational frequency. We don’t have to know what that frequency number actually is. But in order to help others heal we have to approach the situation with the highest vibrational frequency possible. He calls the highest frequency love. Other frequencies such as joy, empowerment, freedom and appreciation have the same high frequency. By raising his/her frequencies to the highest level possible through Quantum Touch techniques, the practitioner, through touch, intention, easy breath work and a feeling of love or appreciation can cause the client (the healer) to raise their frequencies to a healing level. The client’s lower frequencies then entrain (match) the practitioner’s higher frequencies, and healing takes place. Energy again. Everything is energy. There’s a German invention called ONDAMED that has been on the market for years. The word is pronounced on-dahmed. This device has been programmed with the vibrational frequencies of each organ of the body. A wand attached to the machine is held over the organ needing healing, sending waves of the desired vibrational frequency into the dysfunctional organ, entraining its frequency to rise. That’s how the healing takes place. The Quantum Touch process uses the same idea – higher vibrational frequencies heal. The difference is, instead of machine-to-person, it’s person-to-person (or person-to-animal, in case your pet needs healing). If we realize how much time we spend in the

lower frequencies of fear, guilt, powerlessness, insecurity, grief, criticism, jealousy, anger and blame, it seems clear that we may be causing many of our own ailments. If we can feel the emotions of joy, empowerment, freedom, love and appreciation and exude a passion for life, enthusiasm, positive expectation, optimism, eagerness, hopefulness and contentment, well…..it makes sense that we would be much healthier. As practitioners around the world practiced these procedures, many of them developed more advanced techniques. As Richard continued to teach and practice, he also came up with easier techniques that worked faster. The second book in this series is Quantum Touch 2.0 (Discovering and Becoming the New Human). This second book explains how to do the healing remotely. Since everything is connected, and reality is beginning to be seen as a hologram, it is as easy to assist with healing from across the room, across town or across a continent as it is to be actually touching the client. The author has seen that children can learn to do these healing procedures as fast as or faster than adults. He writes with clarity, caring and love. His explanations are easy to understand and to apply. The illustrations are excellent. One can learn how to do Quantum Touch by reading the book, by attending a weekend course, by purchasing a video program or downloading the instruction program to your computer. People using this healing system have learned through all these different ways. There are free videos on the quantumtouch.com website which explain these ideas and procedures in detail, and give examples as well as testimonials of healings. Dr. Jim Oschman, a respected and well known author of books detailing the scientific basis for Energy Healing, says: “Richard Gordon has an unsurpassed ability for explaining Energy Healing to novices and professionals alike. He shows us how to activate the most profound levels of healing, masterfully weaving together the story of his discoveries of Quantum Touch with exceptionally clear illustrations that make it easy for anyone to learn this inspiring new technique. This book is invaluable to all health professionals.” Richard Gordon has a goal. In his dedication he says,” I dedicate this book to the universal awareness that healing is not only real, but the easiest of skills to learn. With the awareness that life-force is undeniable and tangible, I offer this book in support of the creation and establishment of a new branch of science based on the study of life-force energy: “Life-Force Science.” I believe that someday LifeForce Science will bring the dimension of consciousness to our understanding of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and psychology. I gratefully dedicate this book to our shared future.” This excellent ground-breaking book is available locally or online.

T
here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.
