EDITOR’S NOTE
“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”
HEALTHY BEGINNINGS
— F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
Gabrielle Irvin
Happy October, Northern Nevada! I’m loving the warmth of this picturesque, crisp fall season. Embrace the chill of October and explore the gorgeous, golden landscape of the Great Basin. Stroll down the Truckee River to enjoy the fiery, red fall leaves and visit a local tea or coffee café to warm your hands, heart and belly (that’s what I’ll be doing this fall). October not only provides us with dancing trees of golds, reds and oranges, pumpkin spice lattes and warm, cozy sweaters, but also provides us the opportunity to support and celebrate those affected by breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us to rally behind raising awareness and funds to advance research, promote prevention and aid those affected. This October, our goal is to elevate this cause, and to shed light on wellness information to help combat the more than 100 types of cancer that can plague our bodies. I truly believe that this quote, provided by the World Health Organization, can never be shared enough:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” We’re here to provide you with the knowledge and resources to help elevate your mind-body balance and optimize your health – you deserve a life of vitality and wellness. In this issue, we feature Moms on the Run, a local nonprofit organization that provides support to those suffering with breast and gynecological cancers in our community – a truly incredible organization. We identify the benefits of vitamin C in targeting cancer stem cells, we examine the dreams of a dying woman and we learn about thermography, a new technology that promotes natural, non-invasive breast screening. We also highlight healthy eating habits to aid in the fight against cancer, we introduce intravenous curcumin as a new pain relief alternative for cancer and chronic diseases, and we provide knowledge and insight into the natural causes of cancer. Next month, I pass the Healthy Beginnings Magazine editorial torch to Kevin MacMillan. Kevin manages various publications in our community, including Tahoe Magazine. He previously worked as the managing editor of the Sierra Sun and North Lake Tahoe Bonanza newspapers in North Tahoe-Truckee. To connect with Kevin, please email kmacmillan@swiftcom.com. Please connect with us if you have questions, comments or ideas. Follow us and engage with our social platforms and content. And, of course, we wish you a warm and cheerful October. Cheers,

An exciting new study at the University of Salford, Manchester has shown that vitamin C is more effective at killing cancer stem cells than six other substances. A team of scientists at the university concluded that vitamin C is “up to ten times more effective at stopping cancer cell growth than pharmaceuticals such as 2-DG”. The research, published in Oncotarget, is the first evidence that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can be used to target and kill cancer stem cells (CSCs), the cells responsible for fueling resistant fatal tumors. Dr. Michael Lisanti, professor of Translational Medicine at the University of Salford, said, “We have been looking at how to target cancer stem cells with a range of substances but by far the most exciting are the results with vitamin C. Vitamin C is cheap, natural, non-toxic and readily available so to have it as a potential weapon in the fight against cancer would be a significant step.” Cancer stem-like cells are thought to be the root cause of chemotherapy resistance, leading to treatment failure in patients with advanced disease and the triggers of tumor recurrence and metastasis (spread). Vitamin C has previously been shown to be effective as a non-toxic anti-cancer agent in studies by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling, and was recently shown to reduce mortality by 25 percent in breast cancer patients in Japan. However, its effects on CSC activity have not been previously evaluated. In this context, it behaves as an inhibitor of glycolysis (fermentation), which fuels energy production in these cancer cells.
Getty Images
VITAMIN C IS EFFECTIVE IN TARGETING CANCER STEM CELLS
The other major concept behind High Dose Intravenous Vitamin C (HDIVC) is that it is used as a pro-drug for the production of hydrogen peroxide in the extracellular space, which can generate free radicals that are damaging to the cancer cells. It does this by stimulating certain cells to produce internal peroxide. Normal cells can reduce the peroxide to water and oxygen. Emerging data indicate that there are additive effects of ascorbate (vitamin C) with other neoplastic (anti-cancer) agents. A review of available data in 2008 summarized multiple existing cancer therapies and their effect in combination with ascorbate and found all agents were either not affected or enhanced by ascorbate. Newer data published between late 2011 and 2012 also reveal only positive additive effects using HDIVC in combination with existing cancer treatments. The evidence continues to mount that vitamin C can play a valuable role in the defeat of this vicious disease. For more information, contact Reno Integrative Medical Center, 6110 Plumas St., Ste. THE DREAMS OF A DYING WOMAN,
PART V By Andy Drymalski, EdD
Getty Images
One challenge in determining if a particular dream relates to the approaching death of the dreamer is the fact that the psyche treats death much the same as it treats any other major life transition. Death and rebirth imagery is used in both cases. Death of the body is treated by the psyche no differently from the more symbolic deaths we pass through in the course of a lifetime, such as the death of one’s dependency on parents in adolescence, or the death of a familiar role/identity at midlife. The psyche does not treat physical death as something final. It portrays it as another stop in the ongoing process of psychological development. The following dream occurred 9 months – almost to the day – before Lila (not her actual name) died of cancer, and 7 months before she knew she was ill.
Xavier (Lila’s boyfriend of many years) and I are on an ‘outing’ in a desert setting. We go to where there is a group of people honoring ‘new life’ outside. Most of us
8
are in long coats – muted colors of grays, brown and black. The wind is blowing. We are huddled in little lines like pews in a church. There are three priest-like men leading this group in the dedication of a special plant, which has to be tough to be planted out here. It is about 4 feet tall and bushy. They are going to film this dedication and they want someone to assist in the ritual. Everyone backs away from me a little, even Xavier. But he is still close by. The tallest of the three men came up to me while everyone backs away. Everyone had gloves on. I was not scared because there was an atmosphere of fun and joy. There were three mammals on the ground that they also wished to film. The creatures were possum-like and had intense black eyes. They stayed together as they walked by us in a straight line. Xavier and I were there by ‘accident’ and I thought they should film one of the regular people there. Everyone was quiet but joyful. The film crew kept changing their minds on how and where to film this event and what direction. The three mammals would go by in a straight direction
and they would look at me. At every film direction we seemed to wait a long time after the main man would walk me there by holding my gloved hand. The group of people would turn and walk accordingly. The man who reminded me of Father C took my gloved hand and said they’d better get it right this time, and he smiled and gave me a small laugh. The three mammals go by again, the sun is shining and it is still windy. It all seemed church-like and I felt compelled to tell this man that I was not Catholic. He laughs at me and tells me it is ok. The plant was dedicated, Xavier was with me. Everyone is happy and we all start leaving. This is a strange dream. Whether it related to her coming death is uncertain but worthy of consideration. Lila reported that the night before the dream she had spoken with a friend who encouraged her to marry Xavier (her boyfriend of many years) rather than just live with him. Lila wondered if perhaps the dream referred
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
to a potential marriage between herself and Xavier. Certainly the image of a joyful gathering presided over by a priest resonates with the feeling of a wedding ceremony. Counter to this perspective, however, are a couple key points. 1) The people are wearing long coats of dark hues – brown, gray and black. That is clothing more evocative of a funeral than a wedding. 2) The other people are backing away from Lila, including her boyfriend. This suggests something she is doing by herself; she is not joined by Xavier until after the ceremony is completed. Interestingly, a theme that frequently appears in the dreams of people who are approaching death is that of a “death wedding.” The unconscious links the images of a wedding with death because it views death as a new beginning and a union of opposites – e.g., the masculine and the feminine, the finite and the eternal, ego consciousness with the soul. Amplifying this theme is the fact that in ancient Greece, the innermost chamber of the coffin was called the thalamus, or bridal chamber. Similarly, the walls of Etruscan tombs communicated the sense of a wedding celebration through scenes of music, dancing and feasting.
A bush is being planted in the desert. Lila is involved in a ritual, a dedication and commemoration of new life. Vegetation is a common symbol in the iconography of death, often appearing on gravestones and tombs, for example. Jungian psychologist Marie-Louis von Franz states that:
Vegetation represented the psychic mystery of death and resurrection… all vegetation is characterized by the fact that it draws its life directly from so-called dead, inorganic matter, from light, air, earth and water. For this reason it is an especially appropriate symbol for the miracle that out of “dead,” gross substances new life can arise. Now, man’s dead body also consists of inorganic matter only, and indeed—or so one hopes—a living “form” could arise from it again, as the vegetation imagery indicates. Three animals and three priests lead the ceremony. The priests symbolize guides to the spiritual realm and the animals to the instinctive. The dream may be suggesting that a healthy negotiation of the death/rebirth process involves both spirit and instinct.

Psychotherapy Services For: DEPRESSION ANXIETY PERSONAL GROWTH LIFE TRANSITION ISSUES DREAM ANALYSIS
It is interesting that the whole event is being filmed, with repetitions of the dedication ritual until it is just right. Is the psyche helping Lila prepare for the central role she will be playing in her own death/rebirth drama? Her memorial service was led by a pastor wearing black and involved family and friends sitting in rows, honoring and celebrating the life she lived. Interestingly, Lila died on Easter, a Christian holy day associated with spring, renewal and life after death. Two weeks later, her ashes were placed in the desert soil of a Nevada cemetery. And as for the filming of the ritual, perhaps Lila’s unconscious anticipated the retelling of her psychological journey of death and rebirth through this series of articles. FIBROMYALGIA:
CHILDHOOD ABUSE AND STRESS HORMONES AS A CAUSE By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P., and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.
Getty Images
In reviewing a few thousand fibromyalgia cases, there appeared to be four main components – autoimmunity, digestive bowel issues, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and stress hormones. Unfortunately it took a while to realize that the reason our patients weren’t responding to a variety of stress relieving herbs and strategies was because they weren’t just getting stressed – they were in PTSD/fight-flight, chronically – and most of the time it was due to incidents of childhood abuse. It became obvious the adrenals – known to most practitioners as the “stress glands” – were the wrong target. The right target was the brain.
10
In a 2010 article in the Journal of Pain on fibromyalgia, the researchers noticed the phenomenon of central sensitization, which is when the central nervous system (mainly the brain) goes through a process called windup and gets regulated into a persistent high state. We call this phenomenon central pain syndrome. And, in short, your brain is continuously telling your adrenal glands to create stress hormones. Many studies since then have found that the pain nerves in the fibromyalgia patient, as a result of central sensitization, were firing too much in proportion to normal stimuli. In other words, someone gives the fibromyal-
gia sufferer a hug and it’s very painful. What the studies found was that stress hormones can help to sensitize the pain nerve endings of the body and up-regulate these pain transmission cycles. The more stress hormones, the more your pain nerves start to transmit pain signals. The studies opened a Pandora’s box on what kind of stresses throughout life could be causing the pain in fibromyalgia sufferers. Even stressors that moms went through when the fibromyalgia sufferer was in utero (because the stress hormones can be passed through to the fetus) were evaluated.
They also evaluated premature birth stresses, surgeries (which increase stress hormones 20-30 percent) as well as the topic at hand – childhood abuse. The studies showed that all of these entities can cause chronic stress hormone cycles. As a result, on our intake forms and oral interviews, we began to ask about all of these possible chronic stressors. The question on childhood stress and trauma was alarmingly positive – meaning the majority of our fibromyalgia patients had experienced this emotional trauma (80 percent of a few thousand). Whether it is by
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
physical, emotional or sexual abuse, or some horrific circumstances later in life (being raped, watching somebody die, divisive divorce, alcoholic spouse) frequently, shortly after these traumas occurred, the eventual fibromyalgia sufferer began to develop pain. How does this happen? As a child, the child’s brain is not really well-developed until approximately 19 years old. Think of a teenager. They don’t always make the best decisions. That’s because the frontal lobes – which act as the brake pedal on the human stress response – are not fully myelinated or developed yet. When a child is exposed to severe trauma, their fear center (amygdala) starts to light up like a firecracker. As stated, that fear center is meant to be kept in check by the frontal lobe. But since the frontal lobe is not strong enough yet, the fear center gets programmed into a height-
ened state of activation for a long period of time (central sensitization). This mechanism has been shown to be present in many studies whether it relates to IBS, depression, anxiety or fibromyalgia, and for individuals who are exposed to that childhood trauma later in life, they are predisposed to their condition because their stress responses are abnormally high and sensitive 24 hours a day. Frequently this “condition” remains active for the traumatic childhood stress sufferer for the rest of their life – even after the frontal lobe myelinates and the event is long gone. So if your fear center is programmed and your stress hormones are sensitized from childhood trauma, the eventual “fibro” sufferer becomes a compromised host and vulnerable to numerous stress related immune and digestive triggers. So this person may
go through a marital breakup and the stress level is 50 percent higher, or it could be that their “natural” daily stress hormones are 20-30 percent higher when they’re not even in any stressful situations, and suddenly the stress hormones damage many physiological functions when “triggered”. Triggers include a further stress, infection, delivering a child, surgery, a car accident, moving from one home to another, etc. The physiological results of these triggers of excessive stress hormone response from childhood traumatic hyper activation of the fear center include struggles sleeping, short-term memory loss, brain fog, can’t find words, migraines, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, chronic sinus infections, asthma, ulcers, H. pylori, leaky gut, SIBO, gallbladder and pancreas dysfunction, food sensitivities, chronic constipation, chronic cystitis, chronic

This mechanism is the major component of fibromyalgia. It was for me. And it must be dealt with, preferably without drugs. Until this mechanism in the fibromyalgia patient is effectively dampened, it has been our experience that treating most of the aspects of the condition result in minimal, temporary or no results. THE ANGELS AMONG US A piece provided by Laura Peppard, Reno Psychic Institute
Getty Images
A moment in time when despair turns to hope and possibility. What is that grace? Maybe a word or touch, a moment of insight, which sets our dark delusion right. The angels among us are those unseen and unsung until revealed in the moment of need. Just what we need, delivered as visitation, inspiration or through a person, it is the energy of a wisdom and compassion beyond the norm. As humans, our path is a series of challenges designed to reveal our true nature. To reveal your true nature to yourself. How else would you truly know yourself without the testimony of choices that challenge ego with something that transcends it? The darker the night, the more brilliant the light when it comes. But when we have gotten lost, forgot that darkness and despair are illusion, somehow there is grace, amazing grace! When it is most needed, least expected and never by conscious demand. Angelic rescue brings you to a moment of innocence where you are cleansed of layers of lies you thought were true. A place like the eyes of a child. A moment where you are allowed to glimpse the light of the immense glory of the bigger picture. The underlying, universal reality that we are creatures of love and immense comprehension. That we are all on a path to our true unique, just right glorious nature. Find the angel within you to play in the God realm. Experience the joy of creating in alignment with the will of evolution. Where problems are reduced to their secondary importance and the true importance of simple virtues are revealed. Every negative feeling and action considered is an opportunity to choose otherwise. Unconditional love is the default under the release of all judgement. Then the ability to see, hear and act with sight and love from above is yours. The magic of healing yourself is the healing of those you touch. An angel whispers in your ear that all is not lost, that growth and a somehow better you has arisen from the ashes. The proof of angels is that you are here now, not there. For more information, call the Reno Psychic Institute at 775-324-2872 or visit www.RenoPsychicInstitute.com

IMPROVE YOUR MOVEMENT AND IMPROVE YOUR LIFE AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT WITH THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD By Carole Bucher, BA, GCFP Submitted by Carole Bucher
Students lying comfortably on mats listen to a quiet voice guiding them to raise their knees, gently stand their feet on the ground and move their heads slowly from side to side, to notice where their weight shifts, how their body responds to the motion of the head and to follow these subtle sensations. So begins another Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement class, the group movement instruction developed by engineer/physicist/martial artist Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais more than 70 years ago as he recovered from debilitating injuries; he later became known by many as the grandfather of neuroplasticity. Today, to become a certified Feldenkrais practitioner requires nearly 4 years of training. Carole Bucher has taught Feldenkrais in Reno since 2009 and is the only guild-certified Feldenkrais practitioner offering classes year-round in Nevada. She teaches people to reconnect with their natural ability to move, explore and learn as children do, and to let go of the compulsion to achieve. Students learn to work at their own level, whatever their age or condition, whether they are physically fit or physically challenged.
•
Sometimes people choose to take private Feldenkrais lessons called Functional Integration, tailored to individual movement, problems and goals. Athletes, equestrians, musicians or performers who want to move beyond plateaus may seek out the Feldenkrais Method to expand their potential, as do people who simply want to recover more vital connections to themselves and the world around them.
•
You’ll feel these differences quickly. Most people notice changes after or during the first session or class. And like all practice, the more you do it, the more you will improve.
For information about classes and lessons, contact Carole Bucher, BA, GCFP, Reno Feldenkrais, at 775-240-7882 or renofeldenkrais@gmail.com; please also visit www.RenoFeldenkrais.blogspot.com for videos of classes and more.
What is Feldenkrais (rhymes with FEL-den-krise)? Feldenkrais is a neuromuscular education system that teaches you how to learn from your own body in movement. In classes, you are verbally guided through unique and non-habitual movement sequences that help you observe and sense your movement patterns and open to new possibilities. •
The Feldenkrais Method works by teaching students to develop sensation and attention in movement. This focus acts directly on the skeletal and nervous systems, making your neurons fire, activating your neural pathways; in effect, you are re-wiring your body’s brain mass, rather than focusing on your muscles or on achieving an external form.
•
You become aware of where resistance and ease occur in your body; you sense the relatedness of the parts of your entire body to the whole.
•
Skeletal alignment improves and movement is more comfortable and coordinated. People feel lighter and stand taller, breathing becomes easier and tensions disappear.
•
Efficiency and performance in all your other activities increase as your reorganization improves.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there is an exciting new technology for breast screening that is compression free, pain free and without harmful radiation. Thermal imaging (thermography) offers a new way for women to have their breasts screened for risk of cancer utilizing major advances in thermal camera technology. How does it work? Angiogenesis is new blood vessel growth, which precedes the formation of tumors in the body. This increased blood flow emits a heat signature that extremely sensitive infrared cameras detect. A thermologist, a doctor trained in the interpretation of infrared thermal images, much like a radiologist trained in reading X-rays, is able to see this abnormal heat signature, which appears years before a tumor forms. Unlike structural imaging (MRI, mammogram or ultrasound), which looks for a structure that has already formed, a thermogram looks for heat patterns, which show blood vessel development, increased circulation and even hormonal imbalances in the body.
“Receiving a thermogram is no different than having your photo taken, as the camera receives information from the heat distribution within the breasts throughout the imaging process without the output of harmful radiation or compression of the tissue.” Due to the unique powers of thermography, women who have been reluctant to receive a mammogram due to sensitive, dense breast tissue or augmentative surgery now have a safe and pain free solution to be proactive about their health. Receiving a thermogram is no different than having your photo taken, as the camera receives information from the heat distribution within the breasts throughout the imaging process without the output of harmful radiation or compression of the tissue. Many doctors across the country that are on the forefront of breast cancer research have endorsed breast thermography as a breakthrough for women’s health. Nationally known Carson City medical doctor Dr. Frank Shallenbeger utilizes thermography in his clinic, which specializes in anti-aging, preventative medicine and cancer treatment. Robert Elliot, M.D., Ph.D., founder and director of the Elliott-

Elliott-Baucom Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Center (one of the largest in the United States), and president of the American Mastology Association states, “The use of computerized medical infrared imaging for breast cancer detection and as a high risk and prognostic indicator leads to both earlier detection of breast cancer and increases the overall survival of breast cancer patients.” Vital Thermal Imaging is now open in Incline Village, Nev. on Tahoe Boulevard. The local owner, Carol Fowler, a certified thermographic technician, is excited to bring this powerful and pioneering technology to the Lake Tahoe area and encourages women to be proactive about their breast health and receive a screening during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. DOES POOR ORAL HYGIENE LEAD TO CANCER? By Dr. Shane Sykes, DMD
Getty Images
The link between periodontal disease and heart disease is extremely well documented, and there is emerging evidence of the connection between various types of cancer and poor oral hygiene.
11/1/17
Proving such a connection requires more research, but an increasing number of research studies are supporting this claim. One study followed almost 50,000 male health care professionals (whom we can assume have better-than-average oral hygiene) and found a statistically significant link between gum disease and lung, kidney, pancreatic and blood cell cancers, along with other types cancer. One can assume that the cancer connection would be even more significant in people with poorer oral hygiene habits. A recent trend suggests that there is a connection between the increased risk of oral cancers when infected with human papillomavirus (HPV), the same virus that causes cervical cancer. We know that there are a few strains of cancercausing HPV that can affect anyone, but some studies suggest that people who rate their oral hygiene as “poor” or “fair” are at a substantially higher risk for contracting oral cancer when compared to those who rate their oral hygiene habits as “good” or “excellent”, regardless of smoking history or number of sexual partners. Many people are infected with HPV, and most will never develop cancer because of it; but neglecting oral health increases cancer risk. There are also connections between smoking and dental/overall health. People who smoke typically have poor oral hygiene and are at an increased risk for various cancers, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tuberculosis and more. Clearly, the decision to quit smoking can have a profoundly positive impact on a person’s health.

Marijuana is now legal in Nevada, among other states. While it is not a new product, the legalization of marijuana will lead to an increased use of the substance, and will open the door for more research. So far, we know that marijuana use can lead to several oral problems, including the development of severe “dry mouth” and a dramatic increase in cavities. Additionally, irritation, edema and redness of the oral tissues have been detected. A few studies have linked marijuana use and the increased risk of gum disease. As far as a link to the development of oral cancer, the high intraoral temperature from marijuana smoking can cause changes in oral tissues and cellular disruption. Although these changes likely could lead to oral cancer, the link has not been proven yet. Clearly, we have a lot to learn. This is just a sampling of some of the current views and research on the connection between oral hygiene, cancer and other health concerns. Ultimately, poor dental hygiene leads to poor overall health. Taking good care of your oral health has no downside, and the upside may be years of extra life and vitality.
Brushing Your Teeth: Your How-To Guide Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your brush should fit your mouth, allowing you to reach all areas easily. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Gently move the brush back and forth in short (tooth-wide) strokes. Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of the teeth. To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down strokes. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth. Floss daily, and eat a balanced diet! These tips were provided by the American Dental Association.

BEATING CANCER WITH FOOD By Melvin Ibarra Nario, M.D., H.M.D.
In the fight against cancer, the usual treatments that come to our minds are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. With the complexity of this disease, we always run toward the so-called “big guns”, for the chaos that cancer brings to one’s physical, mental and emotional state makes us panic and forget about a safer and more preventive strategy in relation to its cure. Approaching this problem should be associated with less side effects, and should be practical for one’s budget. Now, it all starts and ends with what we eat, which leads us to the important issue of food that we put in our bodies that may kill or fuel cancer. In breaking this down, we must understand which food groups are “friends and foes”, for it may make a difference between life or death. Let us start with examples of our “foes”, just to name a few: 1. Deep fried foods. Cooking food in temperatures between 350- 370 degrees Fahrenheit, especially with polyunsaturated vegetable oil such as canola, corn and soybean oil, promotes oxidation that will produce carcinogenic aldehydes and acrolein, which may contribute to the growth of cancers (such as in the pancreas and lungs). Animal meat is known to produce heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons when cooked in high temperatures. Same for carbohydrate-rich foods, especially potatoes that were turned into French fries, which can produce acrylamide. 2. Beef Polyomaviruses has been detected in burger meats. It must be noted that hamburger meats are composed of various types of meats from different animals combined in a patty, which makes the viral contribution mountable. It was also seen in a study on meat workers who were constantly exposed to raw meat processing, as well as the viruses revealed increased risk in mortality to esophageal, lung, bladder and bowel cancer. Cooking can only kill the viruses if cooked at greater than 70 degrees Celsius, thus “medium” and “rare” cooking techniques are ineffective. 3. Eggs An intake of even one egg per day produces a two-fold risk increase toward prostate cancer. The reason for this is the choline contained in eggs. It is converted into
Getty Images
trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in the gut that is absorbed systemically, which leads to generalized inflammation thus powering cancer. Choline uptake is so evident that you can do a body scan to detect cancer cells in the body, for they concentrate heavily in them. As mentioned in the examples above, we can now see that the “foes” are part of our usual diet. For years, we perceived these foods as normal and healthy until we understood how they affected our health. And now let us discuss the “friends” in our fight against cancer. 1. Nuts Nuts are known to contain phytochemicals, protein, healthy unsaturated fats and vitamins such as B6, niacin and folic acid. They can induce cancer cell death

and prevent metastasis. Walnuts and pecans have dominated the nut family in terms of its antioxidant content where it carries a vitamin C load that is more than 100 oranges. Their anti-cancer effects were tested on the liver, colon and in breast cancer. To reap the maximum effects of walnuts, consumption should involve the whole nut and not only the oil or the skin. 2. Fruits Fruits are rich in vitamin C and anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants with high anti-cancer properties. In chronological order, these are the most anti-cancer fruits when tested in liver cancer cells. a. cranberries b. lemons c. apples (unpeeled apples have greater anticancer activity) d. strawberries e. red grapes f. bananas g. peaches h. grapefruit Oranges, pears and pineapples are part of the most common fruits that we consume daily but, unfortunately, they only have minimal effects on cancer cells.
3. Vegetables The most effective sources are in the cruciferous family (e.g. kale, cabbage, broccoli) and in the allium family (e.g. garlic, onions, leeks) to affect the majority of the cancer cell lines. Garlic is the most effective in the allium family, which is also specific in attacking the cancer cells only and spares the normal ones. Bok choy is the least effective in the cruciferous family. Potatoes, carrots and tomatoes are part of the most common vegetables that we consume daily, but were found to have minimal effects on cancer proliferation. Understanding our food choices in the prevention and treatment of cancer is a must. By summing up the “friends” food category, we can conclude that the secret weapon is being on a plant-based diet. As we open our eyes, we can now convert our diet toward these selections, which we usually neglect or consume minimally. Essential oils have been used for centuries for many uses, and now there are some enormous advantages to using them before, during and after cancer treatment. Several studies have found that aromatherapy oils, the truly pure oils that have not been modified, diluted or chemically made, can provide amazing results and relief for cancer patients that are going through traditional or allopathic cancer therapies. These oils can help maintain quality of life and help prevent the debilitating side effects of cancer treatments including excessive sedation, anxiety, loss of muscle
French physician Dr. Anne-Marie Giraud-Robert presented a study of her findings from more than 1,800 cancer patients at the 7th Scientific Aromatherapy Wholistic Conference in San Francisco in 2009. In her study, Essential Oils, Cancer, Degenerative and Autoimmune Diseases, patients received allopathic treatments concurrently with essential oils, and had much higher survival rates than patients with similar cancers and treatments that did not receive the essential oils. There were no undesirable drug interactions, just an improved quality of life. In Dr. Giraud-Robert’s study, she found that the oils not only helped improve quality of life, but also helped improve natural defenses and drain toxins from the liver and kidneys. Many oils have multiple effects on the mind and body. Some of the oils that Dr. Giraud-Robert found to be particularly useful include:

Cinnamon: Cinnamon helps reduce physical and mental debility, thus helping to elevate the patient’s self confidence. It also helps with depression, reduces anxiety and promotes better sleep. Helichrysum: Helichrysum is extremely useful after surgery, as it helps improve healing and prevent scarring. It also works as an anti-inflammatory, and helps with pain and the emotional shock associated with breast reconstruction. Myrrh: Myrrh helps drain toxins from the kidneys before, during and after chemotherapy. By stimulating the nervous system, it also helps with depression and balances the entire person’s psycho-neuro-endocrine-immunological systems. Melaleuca quinquenervia: Melaleuca quinquenervia can be mixed with massage oils to help reduce lymphatic edemas. It has strong anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-infectious qualities, which help to boost the immune system and prevent additional infections. Recently, a new cream (known as terpene cream) has emerged to help breast cancer patients with pain, swelling, depression and anxiety. It works on many other issues that we are just beginning to tap into. Terpene cream helps alleviate arthritis, injuries from falling, psoriasis, bad discs, sore muscles, headaches, pain and swelling from poison oak, and many other ailments. With soothing organic coconut oil, raw honey and beeswax with added essential oils (terpenes), it is great for moisturizing and calming the skin. Essential oils continue to emerge in many professional toolboxes, as all-natural oils help provide remarkable relief to many.

MOST PEOPLE NEED MORE STOMACH ACID… NOT LESS! By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D. Getty Images
Indigestion (dyspepsia) with heartburn is experienced by an estimated 60-70 percent of the general population over 50 at some point in their lives. Excluding specific causes such as ulcers, infection or cancer, the vast majority of these people, if they are seen by a doctor, are treated with medication to decrease the acid production in the stomach. There are a number of problems that this presents and has the very real possibility of making things worse. First of all it is known that there are specific cells in the stomach that produce hydrochloric acid for some very good reasons. As a result, the stomach lining is designed to be able to handle these acid levels without normally causing any problems. It is also known that the esophagus (the tube we swallow things through into the stomach) is not built to handle any of this acid. Normally, acid is prevented from entering the esophagus by the closing of the cardiac valve (a muscular valve) at the top of the stomach that closes quickly after whatever you swallow passes into the stomach.
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
The way that deficient acid can cause heartburn is that the cardiac valve is pH (measure of degree of acidity) dependent. Low acid levels cause the cardiac valve to not close properly or fast enough and some acid leaks up into the esophagus.
that cut down on the amount of acid secretion in the stomach. Besides causing trouble with the above normal functions of the acid, the drugs also work to stop the heartburn… as long as you are taking the drugs!
Stomach acid is so important that it is regulated by four positive modulators of acid release and only one negative modulator.
As soon as the drugs are stopped however, the heartburn returns. The drug literature says, “not to be used for longer than 3 months”. It is not uncommon for people to be prescribed these drugs for years at a time!
Adequate acid levels are primarily important for proper protein digestion and absorption. In addition, a low acid environment is linked to reduced absorption of key micronutrients such as calcium, iron, folic acid, vitamins B6 and B12. Also, since gastric acid helps to eliminate harmful ingested microorganisms and hinders bacterial overgrowth in the stomach and small bowel, low acid levels can increase the risk for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Conventional medicine routinely treats heartburn with a prescription for one of a number of drugs
Unfortunately, many people these days suffer from improper or poor digestion. When you combine that with a poor diet, it is a perfect situation to eventually develop some form of “disease”. What to do? That is coming in next month’s article. For more information, contact Reno Integrative Medical Center, 6110 Plumas St., Ste.B, Reno, NV 89519, at 775-829-1009 or visit www. POSSIBLE TRIGGERS AND TREATMENTS FOR HEADACHES By Dr. Tony C. Jensen
Getty Images
Headaches are one of the most common medical complaints. There are 150 different types of headaches, and most people will experience one or more in their lifetime. They can affect anyone regardless of age, race or gender. The International Headache Society (HIS) categorizes head pain into three types: 1. primary headaches, 2. secondary headaches and 3. cranial neuralgias, facial pain and other headaches. Common primary headaches are illnesses caused directly by an over activity of the pain sensory of the head. This includes the blood vessels, muscles,
22
chemical activity in the brain, and nerves of the head and neck area. Primary headaches include: a. Tension headaches, which are the most common primary type. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 20 people in the developed world suffer with a daily headache. b. Migraines, which are the second most common primary type, and are most common in women after puberty and tend to run in families. Most children and teens (90 percent) that have migraines have other family members who get them. When both parents
have a history of migraines, there is a 70 percent chance that their child will also have them. If only one parent has a history of these headaches, the risk drops to 25-50 percent. c. Cluster headaches, which are more common in men in their late 20s. Secondary headaches are usually a symptom of an injury or an underlying illness. Different factors that can cause secondary headaches include: • •
Hangover Arterial tears (carotid or vertebral dissections)
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Brain tumor or aneurysm (a bulge in one of your brain arteries) Blood clots Bleeding in or around the brain “Brain freeze” Carbon monoxide poisoning Chiari malformation (structural problem at the base of the skull) Concussion Dehydration Ear infection (middle ear) Glaucoma Teeth-grinding at night or dental problems High blood pressure Medications to treat other disorders Meningitis (inflammation of the membranes and fluids surrounding your brain and spinal cord) Monosodium glutamate (MSG) Influenza Overuse of pain medication, known as rebound headaches (the most common cause of secondary headaches) Panic attacks Sinus infection Stroke
People often get headaches because of illness, stress, environment (including secondhand tobacco smoke), strong smells from household chemicals or perfumes, allergens and certain foods. Pollution, noise, lighting and weather changes are other possible triggers. The pain you feel during a headache comes from a mix of signals between your brain, blood vessels and nearby nerves. Specific nerves of the blood vessels and head muscles switch on and send pain signals to your brain, but it’s not clear why these signals turn on in the first place. Home treatment for headaches can often help reduce the severity of pain and decrease duration and length of time. In most of the research and articles available, the most common ways to treat headaches are with drugs and rest. Depending on your headache type, treatments can include over-the-counter medications, prescriptions, antidepressants, oxygen therapy and Botox. Also mentioned is acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, herbal and nutritional health products, hypnosis, staying hydrated, decreasing your stress, using heat or ice to the neck and head area, and meditation. What surprised me was they never mentioned chiropractic care. In over 20 years of providing care to patients, I have seen people with headaches that get great relief, and sometimes get rid of their headaches for good. Not all types of headaches respond to this type of care, but a lot do. Research shows that spinal manipulation – one of the primary treatments provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck. A 2014 report in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) found that interventions commonly used in chiropractic care improved outcomes for the treatment of acute and chronic neck pain, and increased benefit was shown in several instances where a multimodal approach to neck pain had been used. Also, a 2011 JMPT study found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, improves migraine and cervicogenic headaches. Headaches can be a symptom of a serious condition. If they become more severe, are regular, persistent and different form your normal pattern, or, if they occur after a head injury or fall, it’s important to seek medical advice. Over the Truth, gives a thorough review of the history and treatment of cancer. Be Nice to Your Mitochondria Mitochondrial respiration depends on oxygen. Getting oxygen into the cells depends on healthy cell membranes, which are made of good fats. Damaged oils, fatty acids, inhibit oxygen transport into the cells. Commercial oils have been damaged by high heat, solvents and herbicides. One hundred years ago, 3 percent of Americans died from cancer, and now the number is over 40 percent. More than 1,600 Americans die daily from cancer. What happened? All commercial GMO soybean oil and canola oil have been highly processed and contain 14-16 times more glyphosate (Round Up) than organic oils. We recommend, yes, fatty acids, which contain primrose oil, flaxseed oil, safflower oil, coconut oil and pumpkin seed oil to rebuild cell membranes. Mitochondria process lots of oxygen and in its many reactions throw off damaging free radical oxygen, which needs to be neutralized by antioxidants. The list of nutrients that benefit mitochondria is long, and some of the principle nutrients include vitamin C, thyroid hormone, magnesium, manganese, zinc, chromium, boron, vitamin E and all of the B vitamins. Anti-inflammatory herbs and foods help the mitochondria.

Chronic pain is a problem impacting approximately 100 million Americans, more than those affected by diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Increasing awareness is turning to the opioid crisis in America with medications commonly being the front line treatment for chronic pain. The goal of most prescription pain medication is to reduce pain sensations through the use of painkillers, muscle relaxants and anti-depressants. The concern is significant harm may result in using these medications long-term with risk of dependency or addiction, increased mortality rates and disability. But why do we try to avoid the experience of pain? If you think about pain, it serves a needed function by alerting us to injuries such as a broken bone or a wound. Emotional pain alerts us to feelings of anxiety, and when we may need to flight or flee or do something to improve our mood. Often, physical chronic pain is viewed as solely a physical sensation, but there are psychological aspects as well. As a clinical psychologist I often hear, “If I could just get my pain to go away and
go back to the way I was before, I would be okay.” Essentially, that is the goal of modern medicine – to find the procedure, surgery or medication to “cure” or reduce pain and possibly restore the person to optimal functioning. But for some people this is not a realistic option because, in many cases, people have a condition or injury that is not “curable” but rather something the person must learn to live and cope with. So if we cannot get rid of pain altogether, how do we live a life WITH pain? How do we adapt or cope with our new normal? Leading us to the question of, what do we want our lives to be about? If pain has been the focus for so long we can alter our lives in ways to avoid the experience of pain in hopes of becoming pain free. As a result, we tend to stop doing pleasurable activities, lose intimate relationships, become more isolated and may feel depressed and anxious. The more we attempt to avoid pain and the related thoughts, emotions and activities, the more constrained our lives become. Often, getting rid of the pain is not the realistic answer, but instead expanding

There is no doubt that pain hurts physically and emotionally, but it isn’t the pain itself, but rather our response to the pain, that contributes to increased suffering. Trying to avoid our thoughts about pain by suppressing them often can strengthen the pain we are experiencing versus diminishing it. I wrote about mindfulness a few months back, but this approach involves practicing how to redirect our attention back to the here and now. Think of your thoughts as a radio. You don’t want to try and turn the radio off, you want to change the way you listen or tune into the radio. Our thoughts may come across the radio loud and clear, but we can learn how to turn down the volume by changing the way we listen. For example, to begin the practice sit down in a chair and ask
yourself, what are you experiencing in this moment? What thoughts, feelings and physical sensations (even pain) are you experiencing right now? Allow yourself to observe and describe these feelings without trying to change them. During this experience, you might want to bring your sensations to your breath. Maybe say to yourself “relax” on each outward breath. Finally, expand your awareness to you feeling your whole body breathing. If you are feeling pain, something strong, maybe say to yourself, “Okay, just let me feel this no matter how hard it is.” Allow yourself to breathe with these feelings, and if your mind wanders to your thoughts or your pain just acknowledge and let go of them and bring your attention back to your breath. Learning to turn into our pain, instead of turning away, can help us face difficult parts of our lives without losing sight of
the things that are most important to us. Don’t lose hope, you don’t have to let pain define you, and there is always hope to live the life you want WITH pain.

INTRAVENOUS CURCUMIN:
A PAIN RELIEF ALTERNATIVE FOR CANCER AND CHRONIC DISEASES By William Clearfield, D.O. cancer and chronic, debilitating pain. Armed with flashy charts and slick promotional items, she confidently stated that there was no upper limit to the amount of opioids one could prescribe and, to drive home the point, she used language, surely taught to her in “training” sessions, meant as a threat to every physician on her call list. “It is malpractice to allow a patient to remain in pain,” she said. The magic word in doctorland is “malpractice.”

After medical school and residency, much of what passes for continuing medical education to physicians in the field is presented by bright young representatives of the large pharmaceutical companies. Armed with lunches and, in the old days, circa 1982, trips to Florida, Hawaii and the like, pharmaceutical representatives were not so exactly educational contacts, but rather providers of propaganda and infomercials. One such person presented to my Wilkes Barre, PA. office in the fall of 1995. Bright and cheery, she showcased a newly formulated, long acting opioid for the relief of

Moreover, thus began the opioid epidemic. Local, state and federal government official and health experts fomented the opioid crisis. A mandate went out to every physician in the country. State medical boards across the country, using their dictatorial powers, “coincidentally” stated that to retain licensure “proper pain management” would be studied by all physicians. The bottom line: the sky is no limit to the amount of opioids prescribed as long as the patient complained of pain. We physicians were assured there was no addiction potential for a patient truly in pain. Pain was designated the “fifth vital sign,” along with blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate and temperature. In 2000, the Joint Commission, an organization that accredits health care organizations, required health care organizations to prove that they were assessing and treating pain. From 1999 to 2015, more than 183,000 people died in the U.S. from overdoses related to prescription opioids. So, true to form, after (mostly) creating the problem, the powers that be turned to “correct” the problem, and they mostly created and decreed opioids as public enemy number one. (I am not saying opioids are not an enemy. The point: the same public health geniuses who told us cholesterol was bad – ushering in the diabetes and obesity epidemic of the 1990s – and that iodine was a poison – leading directly to the hypothyroid autoimmune crises of the early 50s – were at it again.) Now, listening to the politicians and pontificators on television, every patient on an opioid is an addict and every prescription written is a criminal act. Every year, state medical boards across the country mandate certain, usually politically correct, education requirements, to maintain licensure. 2016’s (re)education camp was about the dangers of highly addictive narcotics. When confronted about what to do with addicted patients, the usual answer from these armchair “experts” writing their rules for society from their ivory towers? Shrug their shoulders. What to do? Somewhere in the world, there has to be a substance or combination of substances nearly as potent as morphine without the addictive and central nervous system depressing effects.

From the Indian Ayurvedic tradition, turmeric, or curcumin, interrupts multiple cell signaling pathways and, when combined with Bioperine, black pepper, powerfully inhibits the inflammatory chemicals responsible for deeply seated arthritis and neuropathic pain.
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
Intravenous curcumin acts centrally and on the same pathways as opioids. The same antagonists for opioids, naloxone and naltrexone, block the effects of curcumin. Curcumin inhibits morphine’s reward-facilitating effect and attenuates morphine’s tolerance and dependence effects. It is a viable adjunct for those on long-term opioid treatment to stop addiction. Long-term use of morphine can damage brain cells and cause oxidative stress. Curcumin protects brain cells from oxidative stress and apoptosis (cell death) damage. Curcumin exhibits protection against leukemia, lymphoma, gastrointestinal diseases, genitourinary cancer, ovarian cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, lung cancer, melanoma, neurological cancers and sarcoma. Intravenous curcumin is effective against a variety of inflammatory diseases including chronic pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel disease, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer, gastric inflammation, vitiligo, psoriasis, acute coronary syndrome, atherosclerosis, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic microangiopathy, lupus nephritis, renal conditions, cholecystitis, hepatic conditions, chronic arsenic exposure, alcohol intoxication and chronic bacterial prostatitis. Side effects of curcumin include nausea and vomiting, usually relieved with fiber or psyllium, dizziness, a transient euphoria or high lasting 2-4 hours, a temporary sensation of heat in the hands, feet and chest, skin rash (reversed with IV hydration) and allergic reactions. Contraindications include known gallbladder disease, thought to be the etiology of nausea and vomiting associated (rarely) with curcumin, those with bleeding disorders or on blood thinners, and any allergy to turmeric or curcumin. Intravenous curcumin requires a 2 hour minimum for a 500-milliliter solution. Rapid infusion may lead to vasodilation and a drop in blood pressure. A test dose is mandatory. Tragically, a 30-year-old woman passed due to anaphylactic shock in March 2017 from intravenous curcumin. (Tragic as this was, it pales in comparison to the greater than 15,000 yearly deaths due to opioid addiction.) Her reaction to the infusion was almost instantaneous. The first treatment for anyone is no more than 1 mg/kg of body weight. No other medications, vitamins, minerals, herbs or other additives should be mixed with curcumin. In summary: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Intravenous curcumin acts in the same manner as opioid narcotics to inhibit pain. Intravenous curcumin reduces dependence on opioid painkillers. Patients are relieved at lower and lower doses of narcotics and many can discontinue them completely. Intravenous curcumin reverses opioid induced damage to brain cells. Intravenous curcumin possesses anti-neoplastic properties, protecting the body against a wide variety of neoplasms and inflammatory diseases. Psyllium 5-10 grams or Cholestyramine 2-4 grams are given the night before and after treatment to reduce GI side effects. Contraindications include gallbladder disease, bleeding disorders, those on anticoagulants and allergy to curcumin or its ingredients. A test dose, 1 mg/kg, is mandatory for all patients.

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: MOMS ON THE RUN Submitted by Moms on the Run Moms on the Run is a non-profit organization in Reno, Nevada that was formed in 2000 to raise money to assist local women with breast cancer. Barbara Pinocchio, President of Moms on the Run, lost her sister, Debra, to breast cancer. While going through this difficult time with her family, she realized the financial burden that comes with this terrible disease. Co-founders Barbara and John wanted to do something for other women in the community who were going through this difficult time. As co-owners of the local restaurant “Pinocchio’s”, Barbara wanted to hold a little run from Pinocchio’s Restaurant so that they could give one local woman struggling with breast cancer $1,000. They brought in $100,000 that first year and, 17 years later, Moms on the Run has raised over $4 million dollars, and 98 percent has all gone back into the Northern Nevada community. Funds raised are donated to specific needs of patients with breast and gynecological cancers in Northern Nevada such as rent, gas, transportation to treatments, utility bills and other financial necessities that patients are unable to provide while in treatment. The main event every year is a 5K/10K run, which is held every Mother’s Day. Moms on the Run exists now to support women with all women’s cancers during a very difficult time in their lives. Due to the severity of the subject, Moms on the Run strives to portray a very goofy and light-hearted image. This positive mentality allows people to come out and celebrate women in their own lives who have either survived or lost the battle with this terrible disease. Thanks to John and Barbara Pinocchio and a small board of 10 members, it is a day of celebration in our community and has become a Mother’s Day tradition for many. In addition to our main event on Mother’s Day, we also raise funds through other annual events. Runway for Life is a fashion show put on by LoDo Loft Store owners Ashley Machado and Amanda Werbeckes. The show highlights our survivors. We also host Ride for the Tatas, which is a motorcycle poker run. Thanks to the community, individuals and companies have their own fundraisers that benefit Moms on the Run, especially during the month of October! Fundraiser ideas range from Casual Pink Fridays, donation of a percentage of home mortgages lent in the month of October, automatic paycheck deductions, purchasing Moms on the Run clothing, “torturing” trainers with burpees at gyms, pink yoga classes, workplace door decorating contests, hosting golf outings… The list of creative ideas goes on and on! We could not do what we do without our wonderful community coming together!

CONFIRMED NATURAL CAUSES OF CANCER WITHIN THE BODY AND MIND HOW YOU CAN HEAL YOURSELF OF CANCER By Van Harding, LAc
Most of us are already aware of the known causes of cancer such as nuclear radiation (Hiroshima, Chernobyl), chemical carcinogens (cigarette smoke, asbestos, gasoline, red Getty Images dye #40) and electromagnetic fields (aka EMFs) of high frequencies (X-rays, gamma rays). As well, we know that the United States government’s implementation of OSHA (Occupational Safety Health Administration) has been a huge success in reducing incidents of cancer due to our exposure to those external carcinogens and, today, we have confirmed that previously unknown causes are natural and lay within our own body and mind: inflammation and emotions. How is that possible – that our own body’s inflammation or our own emotions can

cause cancer? First let’s look at what we know about inflammation. Decades of research uncovered that inflammation can damage the DNA in a cell, thus causing it to mutate (become cancer). Recent decades of research have uncovered the causes to inflammation: high consumption of animal protein (meat, dairy casein), gluten intolerance, high levels of stress and more. Let’s be clear – it is not the meat, dairy casein or the gluten that damages cell DNA, it is our own immune system’s response to the protein that causes the inflammation that damages cell DNA. Because each person’s physiology, health and food intolerances can vary, those individual factors will determine the extent that those foods or stressors will trigger the production of inflammation. And, because of this variance, there will be a variance to the production of cancer cells. As to our emotions being a cause to cancer, here’s what’s happening. It has been well Causes of Inflammation established through scientific studies that • High consumption of animal stress and/or our emotion interferes with protein (meat or dairy casein) the immune system’s ability to promote • Gluten intolerance the production of cytotoxic T cell and • High stress levels natural killer cell activity, which are our defense against cancer cells. Hence, we have our own militia every moment of the day that eliminates cancer when our immune system is intact and functioning well. Another aspect of emotions – they affect on our own chemistry. Again, research over several decades has confirmed that our emotions affect our brain and bodily physiology and, because of this dynamic impact upon our internal chemistry, we are vulnerable to the manifestation of cancer cells anywhere in the body. More profoundly, research has also confirm that certain personality types need only a very difficult, highly acute dramatic and isolating emotional shock (HADIES) to tip the scales physiologically, and cancer cells emerge. Such acute emotional shocks include the tragic unexpected death of a loved one, loss of career, finances, family or social standing, and more. Within 2 years of that triggering emotional shock, the cancer is detectable. The name of this new cancer paradigm is ‘Psycho-Oncology’ and there are many oncology medical practitioners who have documented thousands of cases whereby the diagnosis was preceded 2 years by a HADIES. Two such practitioners are Dr. Douglas Brodie of Reno Integrative Medical Center and Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, founder of German New Medicine. To quote Dr. Brodie, “The typical cancer personality has lost the ability to cope with these extreme events, because his/her coping mechanism lies in his/her ability to control the environment. When this control is lost, the patient has no other way to cope. Major stress causes suppression on the immune system, and does so more overwhelmingly in
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
the cancer-susceptible individual than in others. Thus personal tragedies and excessive levels of stress appear to combine with the underlying personality described to bring on the immune deficiency which allows cancer to thrive.” To quote Dr. Hamer, “There are very specific signs which clearly distinguish the ordinary conflicts and problems in our daily lives. From the very first moment of a DHS (psychoemotional trauma), you would experience continuous stress on the sympathetic nervous system. The symptoms would include cold hands and/or feet, loss of appetite, weight loss, sleeplessness and dwelling day and night on the conflict content. This situation will only change when the conflict has been resolved. In contrast to normal everyday problems, we see the patient falling into a lasting stress phase that will cause specific symptoms and a growing cancer.”
Cancer Susceptible Personality Traits 1. Being highly conscientious, caring, dutiful, responsible, hardworking and usually of above average intelligence. 2. Exhibits a strong tendency toward carrying other people’s burdens and toward taking on extra obligations, and often “worrying for others.” 3. Having a deep-seated need to make others happy. Being a “people pleaser” with a great need for approval. 4. Feelings of rejection by one or both parents and/or lack of closeness to parents (justified or not) that originated in childhood. 5. Lack of closeness with spouses and others with whom close relationships would normally develop. 6. Harbors long-suppressed toxic emotions, such as anger, resentment, hostility and other emotions deemed inappropriate. The cancer susceptible individual typically internalizes such emotions and has great difficulty expressing them. 7. Reacts adversely to stress, and often becomes unable to cope adequately with such stress. The patient is not able to cope with this HADIES or series of events, which comes as a “last straw” on top of years of suppressed reactions to stress. 8. Has an inability to resolve deep-seated emotional problems/conflicts, usually beginning in childhood, often even being unaware of their presence.

I witnessed my father have two separate events with cancer. He had a personality susceptible to cancer, had been a smoker and ate an inflammatory diet. The first event occurred in his mid-40s when he lost the company he’d built and lost his personal financial security. Within 2 years he had malignant bladder cancer, surgically removed. He fortunately had built another company and retired at age 50, traveling the U.S. with his wife and spending time with grandchildren. Twenty-eight years would pass after this episode, when he then learned that his most darling eldest daughter, the apple of his eye, had lied to him for years. After this, my siblings and I noticed Dad had changed – he no longer had anything positive or nice to say of his darling eldest daughter. Within 2 years of learning of the lies, he was diagnosed with cancer – pancreatic, liver and small cell throughout. He underwent traditional chemo and radiation therapy and within a few months he was gone. With everything we know today, the diagnosis of cancer is no longer being consigned to helplessness and powerlessness in the face of the unknown – gone are the days of mystery. We do KNOW what causes cancer, how to protect ourselves and we have many options for harnessing the resources for healing, being the boosting of the immune system via engineered monoclonal antibodies or nutrition, reducing inflammation by diet and lifestyle changes or doing the inner work of healing our emotional world. Even when external carcinogens are the cause of cancer, the natural causes need to be addressed because, when excluded, they can advance and sustain cancer cell proliferation. For information on Psycho-Oncology and healing cancer with natural medicines, contact Van Harding of Tahoe Neuro Healing at 530-536-5084 or email van@tahoeneurohealing.com.

AI CHI: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? By Healthy Beginnings Staff
The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for bodily functions when we are at rest: it stimulates digestion, activates various metabolic processes and helps us to relax, according to PubMed Health. What are the benefits of Ai Chi? Ai Chi is a beneficial exercise program that promotes movement, flexibility and strength, and increases energy. Ai Chi also helps reduce muscle weakness and joint stiffness, as the warm water (about 86-90 degrees) allows for “slow, relaxed movement and increased blood flow to joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments,” according to Aqua for Balance. “You can get the joint to move without any force or any effort,” Starr said. “So, it’s very therapeutic for frozen shoulder, it’s very therapeutic for people who have had sports injuries, etc.” Ai Chi is also known to help minimize symptoms of anxiety, fatigue and depression, and, because Ai Chi promotes breath and movement, can have a beneficial effect on those with chronic pain, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes and balance impairments.

What is Ai Chi? “Ai Chi is a water-based total body strengthening and relaxation progression that bridges East and West philosophies, and integrates mental, physical and spiritual energy,” according to the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD). It combines Tai Chi and Qi Gong concepts with Shiatsu and Watsu techniques, and is performed in shoulder-depth water using a “combination of deep breathing and slow,
broad movements of the arms, legs and torso,” according to NCHPAD. “When you take that deep diaphragmatic breath (in Ai Chi), and you slow it down, and you’re mindful to that breath, and you pay attention to that breath, you stimulate or activate the parasympathetic nervous system,” Starr Nixdorf, owner of Paradise Salon Spa and Certified Aquatic Rehab Trainer, said.
Where can I learn more about Ai Chi? Starr, also a certified Ai Chi Trainer with special emphasis on people with spinal fusions and scoliosis, as well as wounded veterans, teaches Ai Chi classes daily at Paradise Salon Spa. Garlic – the potent, vampire-repelling and romancekilling herb – has a long history of being used as a powerful illness-fighting therapy. But, does drinking garlic tea or garlic cough syrup truly battle sore throats and flu-like symptoms? Or, does this question just continue to bolster regurgitated, unsubstantiated folktales?
GARLIC: A MEDICAL MARVEL? By Healthy Beginnings Staff
“Research suggests that garlic has earned its place in the modern medicine bag.” Researchers at Washington State University found that a compound in garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting Campylobacter bacterium, one of the most common bacterial causes of food-borne illness in the United States. The compound – diallyl sulfide – was more effective than erythromycin and ciprofloxacin, antibiotics used to treat norovirus and other bacterial infections with symptoms of abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. The research was published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Garlic also contains allicin, which has been found to exhibit antibacterial activity against various bacterial agents. One study published in by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that individuals who ingested a capsule of an allicin-containing garlic supplement, once daily over a 12-week period, had significantly fewer colds than individuals who did not ingest an allicin-containing garlic supplement, indicating that an allicin-containing supplement can prevent attack by the common cold virus. While eating garlic is a generally healthy practice, researchers and scientists remain divided on garlic’s ability to combat bacterial illness, flu and cancer-causing agents. However, there’s no question that garlic is rich in manganese, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and vitamins B6 and C, and has immune-boosting and antiviral effects, which can help reduce inflammation, boost immune function and improve cardiovascular health. After all, garlic has been prescribed since prebiblical times (an ancient Egyptian medical listing from 1550 B.C. recommends garlic as a remedy for 22 ailments, including headaches, bites, worms, tumors and health complications), according to an excerpt in Rodale’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs. If you’re looking to take advantage of garlic’s immuneboosting properties this flu season, try this soothing, garlic soup:

WINTERIZE YOUR GARDEN, LAWN AND LANDSCAPES FOR FERTILE SPRING GROWING By Farmer Craig Witt, Full Circle Owner, Soil Enthusiast
In this article, we’re going to examine the best practices for “winterizing” your garden, lawns and landscapes. Taking minimal efforts before winter sets in can pay off with big results come spring. Winterizing your growing areas is about providing nutrients to the soil and protecting it from harsh temperatures, wind, snow and the winter’s dry frigid air. BOOST Nutrients While you may be preparing your soil for bed, it’s not as if the soil will be asleep and inactive the entire winter. Healthy soils are alive and active all winter, deep beneath the surface. There’s an army of microbes in the ground that continue doing Mother Nature’s work even in the chilly months while little or nothing may be growing above ground. By supplying trace nutrients to your growing areas late in the fall, you’re allowing the microbes to sustain themselves through the winter, which means your soil will remain lively and be plant-ready come spring. Nevada soils crave specific minerals and nutrients, as Nevada soil ecology is much different than in other parts of the country. An all-natural soil amendment, like Full Circle’s BOOST, comes packed with mineral packages that provide food and sustenance to the hard-working microbes. The BOOST mineral and nutrient package is extensive, including premium compost, gypsum, limestone, soft rock phosphate, magnesium sulfate, manganese sulfate, molasses, trace rock powder minerals, humates, mycorrhizae, liquid fish, sulfur, vermicompost, compost tea, kelp, feather meal, iron sulfate, shrimp meal and yucca powder. For gardens, lawns and landscapes, adding nutrients is simple: top your soil with ¼ inch of BOOST (or similar nutrient-rich soil amendment) and water in. No digging or tilling necessary. Providing nutrients in mid-to-late fall will make your soil flush with fast-release organic matter, allowing active microbes to eat nutritious food all winter and create a rich environment your spring plants will love.

PROTECT Your Soil With all the activity happening below the soil, you’ll need a layer of protection to keep the microbe-nutrient dance going. We recommend two options: planting a cover crop, or placing a layer of mulch. When considering which option is best for you, the rule of thumb is that gardens get mulch and large grow plots get cover crops. Your lawns are perfectly fine with neither because your grass will hibernate and remain on the surface, acting as a nice cover itself. You wouldn’t want to mow through wood chips next season if you used mulch in an effort to protect your lawn. Some gardeners choose to plant a cover crop and till the biomass into the soil come spring. If you’re doing this and it’s working for you, we say keep it up! For the most part, only large-scale farmers use cover crops while gardeners simply spread a protective blanket of mulch over their fertile soil. To continue feeding your garden’s soil through the winter, we recommend a composted mulch, like Full Circle’s PROTECT. Composted mulches provide slow-release organic matter that will break down slowly and feed your soil throughout the winter months. Mulch is a great insulator and protector of extreme temperatures (cold and warm) that suppress the microbial activity down in the soil. As an added benefit, mulch helps retain soil moisture so everything below stays alive and hydrated throughout the winter. You’ll be pleased in the spring when you feel the soil beneath the mulch and find a rich, fertile environment ready for incoming plants. Cover crops work similarly to mulch. Farmers have long used cover crops on expansive fields to keep nutrients from escaping, replenish nutrients, protect the soil from harsh winds and temperatures and improve soil tilth (which is the quality and range of pore size found in the soil). Outside of protecting the fertile soil below, cover crops that can survive the winter months are very effective because they push the energy of the sun into the soil through the roots (take some time to research “nitrogen fixation” to learn about free nitrogen fertilization through cover crops). Popular cover crops include: • Cereal rye fall – Reduces nitrate leaching, grows well in acidic soils, grows faster than wheat, root system promotes drainage in compact soils. • Cereal wheat winter – Doesn’t grow as fast as rye, but can be planted late, provides substantial biomass.
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
• Vetch, hairy – Protects against soil erosion, improves soil tilth (again, the quantity and range of pore sizes in the soil). • Clover berseem – Produces considerable biomass, grows quickly, short roots that won’t reach the deeper nutrient banks your spring plants will use. • Clover alsike – Grows where other clovers won’t; it’s known for its ability to grow well in marginal soils. • Ryegrass annual gulf – Dense growth provides excellent soil protection, works well with compact soil, reduces nitrogen loss. In large grow plots, farmers choose to terminate the cover crops come spring and then either remove the biomass or till it into the soil, based on what they’re planting and what they used as their cover crop. Worms and Spores It’s a common misconception that everything dies in the winter, when there’s actually quite the party going on beneath the soil. Besides the active microbes mentioned earlier, we also have to consider two other groups of friends: earthworms and mycorrhizae spores. Gardeners already know and love the first group, earthworms. A layer of soil protecting on the surface is imperative in helping sustain the activity of the earthworms all winter long. You want to keep the soil temperatures above freezing to keep our worm buddies active in the soil and doing their own composting. The second group of friends you want at your soil party – mycorrhizae spores – are somewhat less understood, but are certainly invited. These spores are among the most valuable organisms in fertile soil. These fungi form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, helping create connective chains of filament that reach farther than the roots themselves ever could. These connective chains help plants better mine for nutrients beneath the soil. In exchange, the roots provide the fungi with the tasty glucose they crave. It’s a win-win. However, in soils
that are unprotected throughout the winter, these spores cannot survive and be ready in abundance come spring. If you do not have or do not know if your soil has mycorrhizal fungi in it, do not worry because mycorrhizae spores are added to Full Circle’s BOOST. You will get amazing mychorrhizae in every application. What About My Perennials? We talked lawns, gardens and large farm plots, but what about the trees and shrubs you want to provide with the same winter care? The idea is the same: BOOST the soil around your trees and shrubs with nutrients in mid fall and make sure you’ve placed a level of protection for the soil they grow in with some composted mulch. Perennial plants are clever buggers. They translocate nutrients from their branches and stems down into their roots for winter storage. This activity keeps their branches and stems from freezing in the winter. It also recharges the soil so the plants can grow again in the spring. You can help keep nutrients flowing all winter long with the same practices used to BOOST and PROTECT your garden soil. See, soil works somewhat like a battery. It exerts itself in the summer months, providing energy to the plants above. Then, in the winter, it needs to recharge. Help recharge your soil and have it spring-ready by following the simple steps covered in this article. If you’ve never taken the steps to “winterize” your growing areas, you’re going to be thrilled with the results when you again get your hands dirty come spring. ASTROLOGY AND CANCER By Robert Ayres
None of us are perfect yet. We all have negative karmas or spiritual issues in consciousness that we have brought into this lifetime with the intention of healing. This healing is part of the work we must do in order to evolve our consciousness to the state of enlightenment. We are here to unfold our full potential, which is unbounded. But most psychologists and psychiatrists tell us that most of us are only using 5-10 percent of our mental potential. What is going on with the other 90-95 percent of our awareness? This is the aspect of our being that is the soul (if I use a more spiritual term) and it is the aspect of our being that is the subconscious mind (if I use a more scientific term). It is our destiny to unfold 100 percent of our mental potential, so it is incumbent upon us to transform the subconscious into conscious awareness. One aspect of the soul or subconscious mind is that it is the storehouse of memories. This is where all of our memories of past lives and our karmic patterns reside. We must make these negative karmic patterns conscious so that we can heal them. The opportunity for us to become aware of our negative habit patterns of thinking, feeling and action is in crisis situations – including health crises. Otherwise we are unconsciously controlled by these negative patterns. Crisis is Nature’s way of creating the opportunity for change to the Light. Crisis is opportunity to change. The negative pattern has created the crisis in order for us to become conscious of it so that we can change it for the better. This is one

What is astrology’s perspective on cancer? Astrology works from a very different perspective or paradigm on health and disease than conventional materialisticbased medicine. Astrology would remind us that we are primarily spiritual beings of consciousness that are incarnate in a physical body to master the physical dimension and express ourselves through our thinking, feeling and action. In a simplistic way we can think of ourselves as constituted of spirit, which is the principle of wisdom that expresses through our thinking, soul, which is the principle of love that expresses through our feelings and emotions, and body, which is the principle of will that expresses through our actions. We are spiritual beings here on Earth to express our thinking and feeling in action. This is the realm of action. The word “karma” is Sanskrit, which means “action”. We are evaluated and we evaluate ourselves based upon our actions. Karma is the law of cause and effect – “as you sow, so shall you reap”. Our present lives are conditioned by and are the result of our past life karma. The person’s karmic patterns can be known from their birth chart. The birth chart clearly shows our negative karmas, their cause and how to fix them.
of the roles that negative karma plays in our lives. A deeper understanding of our physical body is that it is a precipitation into matter of our spirit and soul. Our physical bodies are a manifestation of our personal and family karmas. We are all familiar with the idea that death is inevitable just like taxes – as the ancient adage tells us. But the truth of the matter is that we were not designed to die. This physical dimension in which we are now based at the present time is cosmically known as the realm of death. It is our experience that everyone and everything dies here. We are now entering into a new time in human evolution where the polarity and duality of life and death are going to change to the real possibility of physical immortality. This will be the result of unfolding our full potential in consciousness. We are here to conquer death. Cancer is a disease that is a major cause of death. If we look more deeply into the phenomenon of cancer from an astrological perspective we will discover that one of the 12 signs of the zodiac is named Cancer. The violation of the laws of consciousness of Cancer is what results in the disease cancer. Cancer is a cardinal water sign whose consciousness equation is emotional will power. The generic keyword for Cancer is “I Feel”. It is the most feeling and emotional sign of the zodiac. Feelings and emotions are the language of the heart and soul and are sourced out of the principle of love. Our life of feelings and emotions is very important to us. We need to realize that we need to grow our capacity to give and receive love. As the Beatles told us, “All you need is love”. But a lot of us have very negative feelings and emotions. These negative feelings
Healthy Beginnings | October 2017
“The best way to heal ourselves of this negative state of being is to address the root cause of disease and ill health. This is based in our sense of separation from Source, which makes us feel alone and fearful. When we establish conscious awareness of our connection with Source then these negative patterns fall away as the darkness flees with the dawning of a new day.” and emotions have a corrosive, destructive effect on our physiology and health. Of these negative feelings and emotions, the ones that most significantly affect the root cause of cancer are fear and anger. Most of us are conscious of our fear and anger and, when these emotions come to significantly affect our lives, we are more susceptible to getting cancer. Everyone has fear. It is part of the human condition. Anyone who says they don’t have fear is either lying or unconscious. Humanity’s fear is based on a sense of separation from Source. We are always connected with Source, but very few people live in this state of consciousness of connection with Source. When we don’t have conscious awareness with our connection with Source then we are in a state of fear. In this state, our reality is us against the world, which can be very scary and overwhelming. Most people live their lives controlled by fear. This is the breeding ground in soul and body for the gestation of cancer. The planet Saturn, which is the planetary ruler of the sign Capricorn – the opposing sign of Cancer – is the planet of karma which manifests in our lives as fear, anxiety, worry, doubt, depression, sadness, loneliness and feeling stuck. When we feel fear we freeze up like a deer in the headlights. Saturn is also the planet of death. To the degree that we don’t heal our negative karma, we die and have to come back here again until we do. Restriction and contraction of the life force over time results in aging and death. Our body can begin to shut down as a result of fear.
Cancer is telling us that we need to do some internal work on cleaning up our thinking and feeling life. In the bigger picture, mankind is now at a phase of its growth where we can’t proceed in our evolution of consciousness into the Light without cleaning up our internal life of negative, self-sabotaging, self-destructive patterns of thinking, feeling and action. This is why cancer is so widespread at this time. The best way to heal ourselves of this negative state of being is to address the root cause of disease and ill health. This is based in our sense of separation from Source, which makes us feel alone and fearful. When we establish conscious awareness of our connection with Source then these negative patterns fall away as the darkness flees with the dawning of a new day. We live in this state of conscious connection with Source as a result of daily spiritual practice of yoga and meditation. We must learn to heal ourselves. All of this information is contained within the individual’s birth chart. It is all in the stars. For more information, call Astrological Alchemy at 530-550-1118 or visit www.AstrologicalAlchemy.com.
The planet Mars, the planet of action, drive, motivation and courage, is the antidote to fear. Courage is the virtue that overcomes, deals with and heals fear. Mars rules Aries the warrior whose generic keyword is “I Am”— the awareness of being an individualized expression of Divine Consciousness. Mars embodies that drive and motivation to acknowledge and face our fears. Then we must work through our fears and come out the other side healed and empowered. In a very personal way cancer is a disease that creates the situation where we must face our fears and have the courage to live our life authentically and fully. If we continue to live our life based in fear and Mars and courage are not a strong enough influence, then that builds up within us as anger. Anger is the emotion that arises as a result of blocked self-expression. If we don’t have the courage to live our life authentically in terms of who and what we really are as a spiritual being, then anger is the result. Most people project their negative feelings onto others and don’t take responsibility for them. It is always everyone else’s fault. In that way, the person chooses to live unconsciously and not take responsibility for their own negative state of being. Anger energetically stimulates the physiology to action, but if action is not taken to break out of our self-imposed prison, then it builds up inside of us. An internal war begins to ensue between fear and anger. Anger will result physiologically in a state of inflammation of the body tissues that can be the cause of many diseases. When the hot driving energy of Mars is turned inward, which is anger with ourselves of not doing what we should be doing, then it results in stimulating cell activity to grow excessively. The hardness and stuckness of Saturn’s fear makes it take the form of tumors.

ASK THE PHYSICIAN: DO YOU SUFFER FROM FREQUENT HEARTBURN OR GERD? By Michael Murray, MD, FACS
Getty Images
What is GERD? Frequent heartburn, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder) occurs when the one-way valve between the esophagus and stomach loosens and stops functioning properly. This can result in the “reflux” of the stomach’s contents into the esophagus and a sour or bitter liquid feeling in the throat or mouth. Heartburn is described as a fiery feeling in the chest.
avoid and other prevention measures, such as losing weight, if needed, and waiting a few hours before lying down after meals. If GERD is chronic, medications may be required, often throughout the rest of one’s life.
What are the common symptoms and treatments for GERD? The most common symptom is heartburn, but others can include regurgitation, hoarseness, belching, sore throat, asthma-like symptoms, chest pain or discomfort, excessive throat clearing, persistent cough, bloating and burning in the mouth or throat. If left untreated over time, GERD can cause permanent changes to the esophagus lining that can lead to cancer.
If you feel you may be a candidate for surgery, talk with your doctor about EsophyX™Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF). This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that creates an anti-reflux valve where your stomach and esophagus connect. The procedure is performed in under an hour, in most cases, and typically requires just one night in the hospital. Most patients feel fine by the next day. Best of all, after about 4 weeks, many people stop experiencing heartburn completely. There are no incisions, and patients can usually get back to normal activities within days. *
In many cases, GERD can be relieved through diet and lifestyle changes. Talk to your doctor about foods to

Can I benefit from therapeutic intervention? Surgery may be an option for those who do not respond well to medications or as an alternative to a lifetime of taking medication.
Meet the Physician Michael Murray, MD, FACS, is a general surgeon and is board certified in anti-reflux surgery, breast and endoscopic surgery and general surgery. He is the first physician in our community to offer the TIF procedure. While growing up in Philadelphia, he knew he wanted to become a doctor. After excelling in science, biology and anatomy, Dr. Murray went on to study medicine at Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and interned at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He has made Northern Nevada his home for 17 years and enjoys spending much of his free time hunting and enjoying the great outdoors.
