Before the Autumnal Equinox emerges this month, take an extra long stroll through Idlewild Park or savor the cool, refreshing splashes of Lake Tahoe’s blue waters. September kisses our souls with the final fruits of warm, bright, long summer days – soak in these final days of summer lovin’. This September, our goal is to provide you with information to help you achieve mind-body balance and preserve your youthfulness, naturally. bodies are responding to those belief systems. We frequently forget or don’t realize that we can create a healthy body at any age, and that we are not at the mercy of outside influences. It does help, of course, to know how. Let’s get started. Step One: Learn To Access Your Subconscious

We access our subconscious by managing our brain waves. The brain emits electrical activity displayed in the form of brainwaves. The four categories of brainwaves you need to understand are: beta, alpha, theta and delta waves. Beta waves are present when we are consciously alert, thinking, speaking, Delta Brain Waves Frequency: 0.5Hz - 3Hz Unconscious Mind tense or afraid. Alpha waves are present Occurs in deep sleep, unconscious in deep relaxation. Step Two: Learn To Speak The Language Of The Subconscious Your subconscious does not distinguish between “reality” and “imagination.” Whatever information you send it while in the alpha/theta brainwave state will be accepted as true. Therefore, be very mindful of what you tell yourself. Like a small child, your subconscious will believe everything you say! The subconscious speaks in symbols, likes repetition and is powered by emotion. It is very important that you visualize in detail with positive emotion as if what you desire is already manifested. The subconscious is very literal. It does not use words to communicate with you, unless the word is a symbol. If streams of words or stories are going through your head, you are operating in beta or you are listening to your ego and not your inner guidance. At this point it is very important to breathe paying attention to your breath until your mind calms into a quiet space. When you feel yourself entering the alpha state, you can ask your body questions. It will answer you in symbols or a sense of knowing. The more you practice this, the more you will come to trust its accuracy, and the stronger your intuitive guidance system will grow.

“Neuroscientists now tell us that up to 95 percent of what we do every day is motivated by our subconscious programming.” Step Three: Have Patience With Your Subconscious Your subconscious is terrified of change. To the subconscious, change represents death. That is why when we dream of dying, it usually represents going through a big change in our lives and almost never an actual death. The comfort zone of the subconscious is what it already knows. When we do what the subconscious already knows how to do, we experience a sense of pleasure. When we try to do something our subconscious has never done before, it experiences pain and tries to stop us. It will literally find a way to sabotage your positive changes. Stay alert and persist lovingly. Learning to deliberately move your brainwaves (consciousness) up and down the scale from alert, to deep relaxation, to sleep is a powerful skill. You can then use that skill to strengthen your immune system, improve the quality of your sleep, heighten your senses, increase your pain threshold, increase your coping skills and enhance your intuition to name a few. Who knew, the fountain of youth is within you.

Exercise: Close your eyes, take three deep breaths feeling yourself relax more with each exhale. Now imagine or visualize yourself walking in your favorite outdoor environment, feel the air on your skin, hear the sounds around you, notice the quality of light and the fragrances in the air. In your imagination find a comfortable spot to recline. Notice the sense of peace you feel growing inside of you. Now imagine each one of your cells glowing with healthy, healing, energizing light. Feel the balancing energy from the earth flowing up into your body and the light from diving intelligence flowing down into the top of your head meeting and circulating throughout your body. Imagine with each breath your body’s own intelligence is balancing all systems for optimal health and longevity.

HEALTHFUL AGING:

THE BEST GAME IN TOWN AGING IS MOTHER NATURE’S WAY OF RECYCLING US By Michael Gerber, M.D., H.M.D.

brittle and subject to fracture. One may peruse www.FluorideAlert.org for many hours of reading on this topic. Aluminum is a toxic metal that is used to treat our tap water; it causes dirt to come out of solution during processing. Table salt contains aluminum to avoid caking – it is better to use natural sea salt. Many medications and injections contain aluminum. In the literature, aluminum is related to dementia, high blood pressure and diabetes. Aluminum is a nerve toxin and, with our epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease, is best filtered out of our water. Water filtration is important for many reasons. Public water supplies contain medical drugs and synthetic hormones, which are also hidden toxins. Many wells in Northern Nevada are toxic with arsenic, an awful poison that causes dreadful fatigue, anxiety and crushing depression. Mercury from our mining past is another neurotoxin. High lead levels abound in mining workers. A simple hair analysis can accurately screen for these heavy metals, and chelation agents can remove them safely from the body. I have been a chelating physician for over 40 years. Chelating can also remove excess calcium from the arteries and joints and is a wonderful technique for life extension. Toxic pesticides and herbicides are poisoning our environment and bodies. Eating organic foods has never been more important than now. All commercial corn (high fructose corn syrup) and soy is GMO and contains 14-16 times more glyphosate (Roundup) than nonGMO products. California has just passed a law to label Roundup weed killer as a probable carcinogen. Studies have found that 76 percent of rainwater contains glyphosate.

Our natural instincts guide us to survive as long and healthfully as possible. Advances in longevity abound and, frequently, many important ones are glossed over due to economic and philosophical issues. The standard advice is to lose weight, don’t smoke and exercise regularly. While this advice is important there are many other powerful habits and techniques to assist us. Our Environment is Toxic Tap water contains chlorine – a great public health advancement to control bacteria in the water – but, it also causes increased risk of cancer and heart disease. Thankfully, Washoe County avoided water fluoridation in the last legislative session, but many foods that are processed outside our county have toxic levels of fluoride. Gerber’s white grape fruit juice, for example, has nine parts per million of fluoride, far above the one part per million recommended for tap water. There are no chemical reactions in the human body that use fluorine. It increases the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures among many other negative health effects. Fluoride toothpaste should be avoided, as it makes bones

Plastics, hydrocarbons, PCBs, dioxins, food dyes and thousands of other toxic byproducts of manufacturing and food production bombard us continuously. Water filtration is a great protection from many of these environmental pollutants and routine sweating in saunas, or better, far infrared saunas, is one of the only ways to purge our bodies from these modern scourges. Our Bodies Rust as We Age We have a complex relationship with oxygen. Obviously, our cells need it to make energy, but the wrong forms of it ages us prematurely. Free radical oxygen, a byproduct of our metabolism, is the culprit, and it is neutralized by antioxidants. It eats holes in our cell membranes. Inadequate dietary forms of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, enzymes, herbs and foods cause the rusting effects to accelerate as we age causing chronic disease. The list of antioxidant nutrients is very long. Vitamin C is one of our body’s principle antioxidant and by a quirk of nature we don’t make it, almost all other animals do in their liver. I have written about this in previous columns. It is good to recall that a goat that weighs 150 pounds makes 14,000 mg of vitamin C daily and we make none. It is life preserving to take as much vitamin C as possible until the bowels get a little loose and then back down. Acetyl-L-Carnitine and CDP choline are fatty acids that stimulate memory by increasing acetylcholine, our memory neurotransmitter. There are many supplements that improve memory.

Optimizing these hormones with bioidentical (just like our body makes) hormone supplementation is a great help with the aging process. Lab tests frequently misidentify hormone deficiencies such as thyroid, which has been frequently described in these pages. Adrenal hormone balancing with natural hydrocortisone, DHEA, pregnenolone and progesterone are very valuable to revive stressed out patients.

Sex hormones such as testosterone, estriol and estradiol (always balanced with natural progesterone) are very safe in the proper dosages and promote youthfulness and reduction in chronic disease. Human growth hormone therapy has been taught by anti-aging medicine organizations for the last 30 plus years. It increases bone and muscle strength, skin tone and mental acuity. People have used it for millennia from deer antlers and, lately, by injection. Circulation Blood flow is life. Chelation therapy removes calcium from arteries and improves blood flow on several levels. Plaquex, intravenous phosphatidylcholine, rinses the plaque out of arteries. Many herbs and enzymes play roles in keeping the blood from clotting, as does removing chronic infection (such as from infected teeth). It is a blessing for longevity if you work with health professionals who have a broad approach to healthful aging. HARVEST GARDENING TIPS TO KEEP YOUR GARDEN PLENTIFUL – EVEN THROUGH WINTER By Rail City Garden Center and Healthy Beginnings Staff

Why bother with fall annuals? Many people question the wisdom of planting fall annuals – why bother, when winter is quickly approaching? Well, there are many benefits to adding new flowers and foliage to your garden and flowerbeds in autumn. • Staying active in the garden throughout the fall will encourage you to keep up with weeding, composting and other care that will keep your garden in top shape all year. • Fall annuals are often on sale for great prices, providing plenty of gardening enjoyment even on a small budget, and it’s a great time to stock up on other gardening equipment too. • Fall wildlife such as migrating birds and butterflies can take great advantage of fall flowerbeds and gardens to help them survive falling temperatures and changing seasons. Getty Images

The end of summer doesn’t need to mean the end of beautiful flowerbeds and bountiful crops. Although the end of summer sparks the beginning of harvest season – the time of year garden vegetables are ripe and ready to be gathered and enjoyed – it’s a great time to plant fall annuals, spring perennials and other crops to make the most of the autumn gardening season.

The Feldenkrais Method

When is it time to plant? The exact timing to plant fall annuals will vary depending on local climate, weather patterns, soil temperature, moisture levels and daily temperatures. As summer wanes but before the first leaves have begun to show their hidden colors, it is time to plan fall annuals and get ready for their planting. The nights should be chilly, but the days still warm and the soil moist and warm to carefully shelter roots so plants can thrive. Fall annuals should be snug in the ground several weeks before the first frost, and if they are well established, hardy fall flowers and plants will extend the growing season long past the beginning of autumn. What types of annuals should I plant? A wide range of plants is ideal for fall planting, depending on your soil chemistry and local climate. Popular plants that thrive in fall include asters, chrysanthemums, marigolds, ornamental kale, pansies, purple fountain grasses, rosemary and sage. Along with planting fall annuals this September, it’s also time to plan October’s garden tasks. In October, it’s important to winterize your garden and continue planting for spring harvest season. This September and early October, plan to: • Plant hardy perennial bulbs. Sturdy bulbs can be planted in fall to ensure a bright flowerbed as early as possible in spring. Tulips, daffodils, alliums, irises and crocuses can all be planted in October for a stunning spring display.

• Dig up delicate bulbs. Delicate bulbs that could be damaged or killed by frost, such as begonias, dahlias and gladiolas, should be dug up and stored appropriately before the first freeze. They can be replanted in spring after freeze danger has passed. • Provide adequate mulch. As temperatures drop, a thin layer of mulch can help keep plants warmer without stressing them from sudden temperature changes, helping plants harden off their roots for winter. A thicker mulch layer can be applied as soon as overnight freezes begin. • Plant trees. So long as the soil is still warm through September to November, it’s not too late to plant trees including apple, pear and peach trees. In fact, planting trees in fall when they are already dormant lessens the transplant shock and allows the trees to focus on root strengthening and growth so they will become established more quickly.

Healthy Beginnings | September 2017

• Rake, mulch and compost leaves. Leaves are falling in October, and it’s best to mulch them into small shreds to return their nutrients to the lawn, or use mulched leaves in the garden or compost pile to help enrich soil. Keeping up on this task throughout the month will make it easier. • Keep weeding. Weeding is a never-ending task, and it is easier to keep ahead of the weeds rather than let them grow fast and furious in fall. October weeding will ensure there are fewer weeds to compete with tender new plantings or seeds in spring. • Keep watering new plants. New plants, including trees and shrubs, should be thoroughly watered until the ground freezes. This will help reduce winter stress and keep the plants healthy through their first winter. The exception is grass, where watering should gradually be reduced in fall. • Finish the harvest. As October winds down, it is time to finish the fall harvest and freeze, dry or otherwise preserve the bounty before frosts and overnight freezes destroy the produce. And don’t forget herbs when closing the garden – they can also be dried or frozen for winter use. Even though harvest season tends to mark the end of the year’s gardening tasks, much can be done to preserve your harvest and even continue gardening well beyond October. If you’re interested in preserving your food by canning this fall, visit the National Center for Home Food Preservation’s website for a comprehensive how-to canning guide. If you’re ready to enjoy fresh, local vegetables year-round, head to Rail City Garden Center to purchase a copy of Eliot Coleman’s “The Winter Harvest Handbook”. In his

book, Coleman (who is recognized as one of America’s most innovative farmers ) shares that it’s possible to achieve year-round vegetable production in even the coldest climates using organic techniques and unheated greenhouses. “What people don’t understand, is they can have fresh vegetables 365 days a year,” Pawl Hollis, owner of Rail City Garden Center, said.

Although fall harvest season will be in full force and your hands will be full of colorful vegetables, take time to do some research and continue your garden throughout the winter months. Many vegetables thrive in well-prepared soil throughout the winter. Add these vegetables to your autumn garden planting list – you might have a bumper crop (a crop that has yielded an unusually productive harvest) to enjoy early next year: • • • • • •

Beets Broccoli Brussels sprouts Cabbage Carrots Cauliflower

• • • • • •

Garlic Kale Lettuce Mustard greens Peas Potatoes

IS YOGA THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH? By Reverend Dr. Kathaleen Martin Midcalf

According to many studies, yoga facilitates healthy aging. It can positively affect the heart, nervous system, brain and skin – turning back the effects of time. In comparison with medications, medical appointments and surgeries, yoga is both inexpensive and effective. Can yoga truly be the fountain of youth? In yogic philosophy, there is a belief that each of us is born with only so many breaths to take. Once those breaths have been taken, we die. This correlates with what we know about stress-related illnesses. When we undergo ongoing and chronic stress, we tend to breathe more quickly, more shallowly, and use more of our accessory breathing muscles (chest, shoulders and neck). In other words, we are using up a lot of our allotted breaths very rapidly. This ages the body, moving us toward death more quickly. Aging is also associated with changes in the nervous system and brain that decrease cognitive performance and may eventually cause dementia. One study found that yoga could reverse age-related degeneration affecting the heart, brain and nervous system, restoring them to “normal or near-normal levels of function.”

According to this study, participants who practiced yoga improved their heart health and displayed more balanced levels of brain activity and hormones, including reduced levels of cortisol and epinephrine (often called stress hormones.) Every Body Finds A Home In Our Community

Yoga has been shown to improve cardiometabolic function, as well. Yoga can increase levels of a protein called “brain-derived neurotrophic factor” which affects memory, brain plasticity and mood. Low levels of BDNF are associated with lowered cognitive functioning, as well as depression, dementia and even Alzheimer’s disease. A separate study looked at skin appearance as a primary indicator of aging. It found that the effects of both asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) have been shown to correlate with a reduced inflammation response and improved metabolic function of cells and tissues, including skin’s appearance. Tao Porchon-Lynch is the world’s oldest yoga instructor. She was born on August 13, 1918 and, at the writing of this article, was still a practicing yoga teacher. She has been practicing yoga on a regular basis since she was a youth (although many studies suggest that yoga can improve one’s health no matter how old they are when they take up the practice). When you see pictures of Tao, she is a beautiful woman who definitely does NOT look her age and is photographed taking challenging poses such as “scales.” If yoga is Ms. Porchon-Lynch’s fountain of youth, it can also be yours! WHY DO WE DRUM? By Liz Broscoe

Current research shows that specialized group drumming provides many health, wellness and therapeutic benefits. Experiencing steady, rhythmic drumming improves cognitive brain function – increasing our ability to hold attention and focus. This is so good for both kids and adults, especially as technology pulls our attention everywhere. Drumming increases cancer-fighting white blood cells in the immune system and decreases stress, anxiety, blood pressure and pain. It is a “Whole Brain” activity that provides the rare experience of activating and balancing both sides of the brain simultaneously. Consequently, drumming can benefit people dealing with cancer, Parkinson’s, stroke, PTSD and many other conditions. In her book, “When the Drummers Were Women”, Layne Redmond expressed that it is our primordial desire to get back to our roots of drumming. Archeological findings confirm that many cultures have drummed since ancient times.

Submitted by Granlibakken Tahoe

We drum because it’s fun! That is a given. There is something very rewarding about the sound, feel, effort and the unifying experience created within a community drum circle. I am a long-time professional drum set player, but this all-inclusive communal drumming that I am referring to is very different than playing in a band focused more on entertainment.

Drumming is fascinating to me. As a professional drummer of nearly four decades and an educator/facilitator for the last 20 years, I am continually inspired and motivated by helping my students gain a deeper understanding of themselves through drumming. From at-risk kids to adults, whether I facilitated in schools, juvenile treatment centers or at corporate team building events, I continue to enjoy the challenge and rewards of bringing folks together collectively and communally in mind, body and spirit through drumming. From a science point of view, our ancestors did not understand why they drummed, but they certainly knew intuitively. Drum on! MISTLETOE AND WORMWOOD

POWERFUL CANCER FIGHTERS MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

Getty Images

These two unique herbs are gaining notoriety as being among the safest natural remedies for treating cancer – each boasting a solid, evidence-based track record of success. Mistletoe has long been used throughout Europe and other areas as a medicine to treat cancer. Only just now is it starting to make its way to North America for this purpose. Wormwood is the herb used in the distillation of botanical absinthe that the Bible mentions as being symbolically representative of one of God’s holy judgments. In the past it has also been used to eliminate intestinal parasites. The extract of sweet wormwood, which scientists have dubbed “artemisinin,” contains powerful anti-cancer compounds that have long been used throughout China and elsewhere to naturally keep cancer at bay. Both mistletoe and artemisinin are currently at the forefront of modern holistic cancer research. They function complementarily when it comes to how they target and destroy cancer cells. One modulates the immune system in order to better destroy cancer cells. The other essentially tricks cancer cells into accepting a nutrient they need for survival… only to then present them with a hidden “Trojan Horse” killer that stops the cancer cells dead in their tracks. Mistletoe is actually poisonous when consumed improperly, but is powerfully medicinal when used appropriately. It grows on a variety of host plants such as pine, fir, spruce, apple, oak and poplar. Over 1,200 varieties are found in nature.

14

The ancient Greeks used mistletoe to treat all sorts of health conditions ranging from menstrual cramps to organ damage. Because of its exceptional ability to survive harsh winters, the Celtic Druids, as far back as the 1st century AD, looked to mistletoe as being a sacred symbol of vivacity and fertility. Mistletoe contains certain lectins, or proteins, that are selectively cytotoxic (toxic) to cancer cells. They basically inhibit other proteins that, if left unchecked, will trigger cancer cell replication and the formation of tumors. Sweet wormwood (artemisinin) has been used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat conditions such as hemorrhoids, intestinal parasites and malaria. When it is used in combination with iron, it has been found to be a potent anti-cancer remedy. When artemisinin is exposed to iron it releases a cascade of free radicals that are deadly to cancer cells. As it turns out, cancer cells contain considerably more iron than normal cells. This potential is further amplified when iron is administered just prior to the artemisinin. These two plants, when used in combination with other holistic/natural therapies, offer an even more powerful approach to defeating cancer than we have had in the past without the bad side effects of conventional therapies. Wild-caught oily fish (like salmon): Marine fat is loaded with omega-3s and omega-6s, healthy fats that, ironically, can keep you from gaining weight. Enjoy low-mercury, wild-caught fish, such as salmon, cod, steelhead trout or halibut, 2-3 servings per week, to upgrade your body. It lowers your cortisol levels, increases lean body mass and improves vagal tone as measured via heart rate variability, as well as raises DHA and vitamin D levels, both of which are good for the skin and the mind. Whole grains: Like everything else in your body, the brain cannot work without energy. The ability to concentrate and focus comes from an adequate, steady supply of energy – in the form of glucose in our blood to the brain. Achieve this by choosing whole grains with a low glycemic index (such as barley, oats, bulgar, quinoa), which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping one mentally alert throughout the day. Avocados: Are extremely nutrient dense (which is good). The avocado is rich in an array of vitamins and minerals including calcium and magnesium as well as vitamins A, C and B. It contains more potassium than bananas and boasts the highest protein content of any fruit! According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, good fats are those that can lower bad cholesterol levels and are beneficial when consumed in moderation. Avocados contribute good fats to one’s diet, providing 5 grams of monounsaturated fat and 1 gram of polyunsaturated fat per 50g serving. Tomatoes: Foods high in lycopene, like tomatoes, can help protect you against prostate cancer and may help prevent lung cancer, too. Cooked or processed tomatoes (like in juice, paste and sauce) may be more effective than raw ones. Researchers believe that heating or mashing tomatoes releases more of the fruit’s lycopene.

Kale: Kale is more than just an addition to your salad or smoothie. As a nutritional and antioxidant powerhouse, it is considered one of the healthiest foods in the world. In conjunction with a healthful diet, it may help reduce cancer risk and lower cholesterol levels. In addition, kale supports your body’s natural detoxification system and is well known for its anti-inflammatory effects. Nuts: Nuts contain Omega-3s, unsaturated fats (that’s the good kind), fiber, protein … nuts are heart-healthy nutrition in the palm of your hand. Shoot for five 1-ounce servings per week. Broccoli: The anti-inflammatory properties of sulforaphane, one of the isothiocyanates (ITCs) in broccoli, may be able to prevent (or even reverse) some of the damage to blood vessel linings that can be caused by inflammation due to chronic blood sugar problems. Broccoli is great for heart health as it contains fibers, fatty acids and vitamins that help regulate blood pressure in the body. This also helps in reducing bad cholesterol, hence leading to a healthy heart. Broccoli helps protect blood vessels from damaging as well. Stephen M. Tann, MD, FACC, FSCAI, is an interventional cardiologist who has treated thousands of patients for cardiovascular disease. Instead of intervening late in the course of the disease when stents and bypass are the only options, Dr. Tann has chosen to refocus on prevention and root cause reversal of heart disease. Dr. Tann will soon be accepting patients at The Change Place in Carson City. For more information, call 775-283-0699 or email info@thechangeplace.net.

10 REASONS WHY SUGARING MIGHT BE A LITTLE SWEETER THAN WAXING By Healthy Beginnings Staff What do you think of when you hear the word “sugaring”? Are you picturing lightlysugared strawberries? Perhaps, sugar-sprinkled cookies? It might be safe to assume hair removal may not have been top of mind. However, hair removal just might be sweeter than your favorite sugared treat. The term “sugaring” is defined as a hair removal treatment that uses a combination of sugar, lemon and water to naturally remove hair. “Sugaring is the natural alternative to waxing,” Greer Kukuk, owner of White Sage Reno, a studio for skin, said. “You’re removing hair by the root. It’s relatively new, I feel, to the States, as it’s still kind of making its place here. But, it’s actually an ancient technique that the Egyptians discovered.”

Submitted by White Sage Reno

Greer has been practicing sugaring since 2010. Thanks to her love of facials and selfcare regimes, she learned not only the importance of maintaining healthy skin, but also its connection to internal health and well being. She decided to pursue her passion and attend an esthetics college that focused on holistic skin care treatments. And, after practicing sugaring in Portland, she moved to Reno and opened her studio in March 2017 to exist in an environment that encourages and promotes self-care.

“Self-care is important,” Greer said. “It doesn’t have to be painful or scary. Even hair removal can be a relaxing, feel-good service.” Aside from being able to actually EAT the sweet self-care, honey-like paste (this is not recommended), here are 10 reasons why sugaring might be sweeter than waxing: 1. Sugaring is a natural process for hair removal – it’s a honey-like mixture composed of sugar, lemon and water, and does not contain resins that can be found in wax. 2. Sugaring is applied by hand – there are no sticks, no strips. The sugar is molded onto the skin, and then is pulled up and off the skin with a flicking motion. The same piece of sugar is used during the hair removal process. Sugaring is much more sanitary than waxing, as there’s no opportunity to double dip. There’s also less waste. 3. Sugaring is applied and removed opposite of wax, so the sugar goes on against the direction of hair growth. And, you remove the hair with the direction of growth, so there’s less opportunity for breakage and ingrown hairs that many people experience with waxing. 4. The sugar doesn’t stick to live skin cells like wax can, so sugaring causes less irritation, which is beneficial for those with sensitive skin. And, because the sugar does not stick to live skin cells, you can go over an area more than once, which makes the process more thorough than waxing.

ahc

5. The sugar is very sticky, so it does a better job of picking up the shorter, finer hairs. 6. You can sugar almost every body part, with the exception of a man’s beard or mustache. Beyond that, any body part is fair game, from the brow area to the bikini line. 7. Sugaring is known to be less painful, and the sugar is kept in warmers to make the mixture pliable and keep the sugar warm, generally at room temperature. 8. The sugar is water-soluble. So, if there’s any leftover residue on the skin, it can be removed gently with warm water. 9. If shaving is part of your current hair removal routine, allow for 10 days of hair growth prior to your first sugaring session. Generally after a sugaring session, you can expect to stay hairless for about 4-6 weeks. 10. Sugar is exfoliating, as it adheres to the dead skin cells. After a sugaring session, the skin will feel smooth and exfoliated with minimal redness and irritation. For more information about sugaring, or to contact Greer at White Sage, call 775-683-9200 or visit www.WhiteSageReno.com.

LOOKING TO ALLEVIATE CRAMPS, CELLULITE, FINE LINES AND WRINKLES? ADD THESE ESSENTIAL OILS TO YOUR BEAUTY REGIMEN By Elaine Brooks

What would you say if I told you that many of our issues can be relieved with just a whiff of an essential oil? I am speaking to you, ladies. From cramps to pregnancy to stubborn cellulite, all can be alleviated with a pure, therapeutic essential oil. Many oils on the market have added ingredients and/or synthetic additives that cause the oil to lack ‘life force’, which decreases the benefits of pure essential oils. Many oils contain synthetic chemicals and, although they may smell similar to pure essential oils, our bodies can tell the difference and not respond to them. This might be the reason that so many do not believe in the healing powers that pure oils give to our bodies, minds and emotions. This life force can only be found in pure living things. So, let’s get some life force into our bodies by using therapeutic, pure essential oils. Cramps Studies show that cramps have been decreased from 82 percent to 51 percent after using eucalyptus and lavender oil before cramps are expected. The combination of clary sage and geranium have been shown to act as a great anti-spasmodic (place 20 drops in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil and massage into the lower abdominal area for 10 minutes). Oils during pregnancy are not recommended until the second or third trimester. Combine a few drops of lavender and vitamin E oils into your carrier oil and massage gently onto the stomach to support your growing belly. Add a kit of clary sage, frankincense, lavender, Roman chamomile and Mandarin oils to your hospital bag checklist. These oils disperse in the air and help normalize childbirth and increase the satisfaction for the mother, making for an easier, more relaxed experience for both mother and child. Please avoid these essential oils during pregnancy: peppermint, clary sage, cedarwood, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme and wintergreen. Skin Health Essential oils help reduce cellulite and tone and ease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A combination of rosemary (4 drops), pine (4 drops), cinnamon (3 drops), thyme (2 drops) and ginger (5 drops) added to 4 teaspoons of a carrier oil will help smooth dimply and bumpy skin (if worked deeply into the skin area). Other essential oils that promote skin health include: Jojoba or coconut oils: Help hydrate the skin. Lemongrass oil: Helps purify the skin. Geranium oil: Acts as a healthy toner and eases the appearance of fine lines. Frankincense or patchouli oils: Soothe the skin and provide healthy cellular support. For angry skin, combine patchouli (2 drops), tea tree (3 drops), lavender (3 drops), geranium (1 drop) and 1-2 tablespoons of colloidal silver gel and lightly smooth into your skin for relief. Always remember to use pure essential, organic and wild harvested oils. And, if using essential oils on the skin, add a carrier oil or cream to help the skin absorb the oils more easily.

6 SIMPLE WAYS TO GET COOKING…

AND KEEP YOUR KITCHEN STOCKED WITH LOCAL, HEALTHY FOODS By Denise Clodjeaux Getty Images

Love to eat, but hate to cook? Tired of spending all that money eating out or ordering in? The good news is that it’s never too late to learn to cook. And, you don’t need to go to a fancy culinary school to master the craft. In fact, many highly successful celebrity chefs, including Rachel Ray, Jamie Oliver and Ina Garten, are mostly self-taught. And while you most likely won’t land a cooking show, maybe you’ll be inspired to learn to confidently prepare a great tasting meal for your family. We put together some ideas to get you started: Like so many other things, there’s an app for that! Many cooks, from novice to professional, use apps for cooking tutorials. Check out apps and websites from Big Oven, All Recipes Dinner Spinner, Cookpad and Food Network. You can also find great cooking tutorials on YouTube. Taking a class is another great way to learn. Lara Richie, owner of Nothing to It Culinary Center in Reno, believes that mastering a few skills such as dicing and slicing is a good way to start, and then move on to cooking techniques such as sautéing and roasting. You can often find a variety of cooking-related courses at your local community college. An online search could turn up several options in your community. Consider investing in a few good tools. The right ones can make the job much easier. Start out with a good knife, a couple of good pots and pans, and maybe a meat thermometer. You can often find deals on high-end products in discount stores in your area. A good pan can make a world of difference when you are sautéing, and a good knife will make it so much easier to make clean slices.

You can find a list of local farmers markets and farms at www.NevadaGrown.com or on page 47 of this issue. Remember – cooking can be fun!

Keep a well-stocked pantry. It should include plenty of canned goods such as tomatoes, beans, broths and tuna, plus dry starches like pasta and rice. Don’t forget the condiments and your favorite dried herbs and spices.

Remember to keep it simple. Don’t try to recreate a fancy restaurant meal right away. Focus on basics. When looking at recipes, search out those with five ingredients or less. Don’t stress, and don’t fret about making a mistake or two. Even the best chefs have their off days in the kitchen.

A final but important consideration. Buy local when you can, it will be the freshest and tastiest. Charlie Abowd, chef/owner of Café at Adele’s in Carson City, recommends shopping at your local farmers market and asking the grower how they like to prepare a particular fruit or vegetable. He says that the best meals always start with the best ingredients.

THE DREAMS OF A DYING WOMAN, PART IV By Andy Drymalski, EdD

Getty Images

About 3½ months before her death and 1½ months before her diagnosis of cancer, a woman in her early 70s had the following dream:

I enter a large barn. It is empty except for an older, maroon-colored car, similar to one I used to drag race back in the 60s. It must have been restored for it is in great shape. Some women come into the barn. They seem to have some authority over it. They decide the car needs to go. They will have it moved outside because they want to use the barn for something else. I am upset by their decision for I feel the car is a classic and ought to be preserved.

The maroon car brings back fond memories for Lila (not her actual name). It takes her back to a happy and exciting time in her life. Symbolically, the car reflects the conscious beliefs and values that carried her through life. But now it is being put outside, like a horse put out to pasture. It has served its function and is now viewed as no longer being of use. It signals the end of an era, a worldview and period of time representative of Lila’s life. Around the same time as this dream Lila had another dream:

I’m walking up a desert road on a slight incline, which was like a trail. The hillside is kind of yellowish-orange sand with sagebrush. I notice a large hole in the side of the hill to my right. It is the size a badger or coyote might make. I’m surprised it is so close to the road. As I get alongside it I see a large, well-preserved snake skull. It is caramel color with brown tones. As I get close it starts coming out of the hole and moves to go up the hill on that side of the road. It has a very wide snake-like body with rattles. It is as wide as a badger’s body and about that long. It is not a threat to me as it just moves up the small hill. I was very surprised it had a live body and just an empty skull for a head. The whole thing seemed somewhat sinister. For several months Lila had been experiencing digestion problems. Having had similar symptoms before, she assumed that they were just “stress-related,” for she had been worried about her boyfriend who was dealing with a serious medical condition. Lila sensed something ominous about the dream. She wondered if perhaps it was warning her of her boyfriend’s future death. Such was not the case, however. The dream was a harbinger of her own death. A snake is a common symbol of the psyche (total personality), for like a snake we outgrow our skin – that is, we go through psychological transformations – many times in a lifetime. Combining the snake symbol with that of the skull suggests that a death process, or transition, is occurring. Lila intuitively grasped this idea but misunderstood its reference. BACK TO SCHOOL DENTAL HYGIENE TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD’S MOUTH HAPPY AND HEALTHY By Dr. Gregory B. Carman, DMD Getty Images

As summer comes to a close and our kids all return to an exciting new year of school, it’s important to not forget some implications this might mean for our loved ones. School is a bustling time for children and parents alike, filled with daily emotions of stress, joy and responsibility… it can also mean a time for potential dental pitfalls. With school regulations that essentially don’t allow children to brush after lunch or snacks, good dental hygiene practices become ever more important. Decay, infections and high dental bills can hit families hard, both from an emotional aspect as well as a financial one. Preventing this is absolutely paramount, and remarkably easy! Snacks. Everybody loves snacks. Frequent, small meals throughout the day are also a terrific way to balance blood sugar levels, maintain concentration and given our kids the energy they need to tackle the day’s challenges. It can also have some significant repercussions for our dental health. Every meal, the acidity level in our oral cavities decreases, increasing our susceptibility to decay and dental infection. Juices and sugary snacks heighten this risk greatly and can quickly lead to decay without proper oral hygiene. Fruit snacks, juice, candies… we all know the culprits. So what is a parent to do? Healthy alternatives such as fruits, veggies and unrefined carbohydrates in the form of whole grains are a terrific place to start. Speaking as a parent, that can be a hard sell to a little one, so it’s important to pick fruits and veggies that kids tend to be more amenable to in the first place! Carrot sticks, whole apples, rhubarb… hmmm, forget that last one. When push comes to shove, those healthy alternatives will also give our kids overall better nutrition and even more energy levels! Improving our children’s diet during school time is of absolute importance in maintaining dental and overall health, but there are other things we, as parents, need to do to protect our little ones from dental mayhem. Brush and floss. It’s such an easy statement, but it can be downright difficult with kids! Brushing AND flossing after breakfast gives our

CC CLEAR CREEK DENTAL, LLC Our team provides education and tips for better dental health practices.

kids a beautiful smile and clean start to their day. All too often, I hear from parents that they make their kids brush right when they wake up or get dressed… and then they have their breakfast. The sugars in that breakfast will remain in their teeth all day, feeding and supplying the oral bacteria with everything they need to cause damage to their oral health. At the end of the school day, after snacks and lunch, one of the best things a parent can do is help them brush right when they come home. Ideally, brushing right after lunch would provide their already susceptible dentition with less food source for bacteria, increased fluoride contact and uptake, and good oral hygiene habits. Parents with children who are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment – this is incredibly important, as food caught between the orthodontic brackets can give rise to unsightly “white spots” or outright decay in very visible areas. Following dinner, brushing and flossing right before bed is a downright necessity. Fluoride. The knight in shining armor that protects the oral cavity from nasty invaders such as Streptococcus mutans and other detrimental bacteria. Some schools provide fluoride programs where children are given fluoride gels and/or tabs during the course of the day to aid in dental health. If your school provides such a program, it is my hearty recommendation to do it! Minimal cost, but the gains are undisputed! Most importantly, I hope you and your loved ones have a tremendous school year full of learning, fun and friends! While the stresses and daily rigors of life can get pretty intense during the academic year, it’s always important to remember that these times come and go more quickly than we care to realize. CAR SEAT MISUSE IS A DANGEROUS MISTAKE By Rachel Ching, LCCE, PCD (DONA), CLE, CPST

• Using after market toys, strap covers, blankets and heavy jackets. Products that did not come in the box with your car seat have not been crash tested with your seat, and your manufacturer asks that you please do not use them. This includes products that tout their safety on their packaging. There are no regulations requiring safety testing for these products, and most car seat warranties are void when anything is placed between the child and the straps. During winter months, take heavy jackets off before strapping the child into the seat. If you have to adjust the straps to accommodate the jacket, it is too thick.

Alternatives: Use the head rests and strap covers that come with the car seat. One exception is rolled up receiving blankets placed beside the baby’s head to keep them from rolling side to side. And, please use a blanket that is separate from the seat for warmth. • Do not wash your webbing or car seat straps in the washer. Most car seats come with a cover that can be removed and machine washed for convenience. The straps and buckles, however, cannot be subjected to this kind of motion, and you may cause the buckle to malfunction in an accident.

Alternatives: Use a baby wipe or mild soap and water to wipe down dirty straps, and be cautious of using harsh chemicals, which can degrade the flame retardants and physical integrity of the straps.

Getty Images

It is estimated that 80 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly. This number shocked me on my first day of training to become a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician. I knew I would be the exception to this rule… I was pretty smug, I knew a lot about my car seats! I whizzed through the first 3 days of the class. I had it going on! And toward the end of day 3, the instructor pulled out the exact model of seat I had installed in my car and showed me how 3 out of 4 of my seats were installed incorrectly. Humbling, to say the least. I am more aware now that car seats are misused often and in more ways than I knew possible. Does this seat fit my child and my vehicle? Are the straps too loose? Clips too low? Should I use the latch or the seatbelt? Am I getting a tight enough install on the base? With so many details, there are so many ways to make a mistake. Here are the issues I found the most shocking, and most have nothing to do with travelling in the car. • Using your car seat as a baby carrier or sleep surface. When an infant is placed prone in a car seat, their small airways can easily be compromised. This lowers the level of oxygen in their blood. In general, car seats are not a safe place for babies to sleep or be transported when not in motion in a vehicle.

Alternatives: Wear your baby in a carrier or wrap, create a safe sleep space for your baby in your home and pick your baby up when you arrive at your destination. • Placing the infant carrier on the top of a shopping cart. Every year, babies are injured and die from shopping carts tipping and their car seats crashing to the ground. Even when you hear a click, your baby is not safe. Shopping carts tip easily in general, and with the added weight of baby up high, this creates a high center of gravity and any bump can cause the cart to tip.

Alternatives: Wear your baby in a carrier or wrap, place the car seat in the cargo area of the cart and, if needed, grab a second basket for the big shopping trip.

“When an infant is placed prone in a car seat, their small airways can easily be compromised. This lowers the level of oxygen in their blood. In general, car seats are not a safe place for babies to sleep or be transported when not in motion in a vehicle.” While using and installing your car seats may seem like a no brainer, reading both the owner’s manual from your car and the manual from the car seat itself is helpful in getting clear and correct information regarding the specifics of your actual seat and car you are using. If in doubt, contact The Nurturing Nest for a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and additional resources in the community. CARE GUIDELINES FOR AN INTACT BABY BOY By Rachel Ching, LCCE, PCD (DONA), CLE, CPST

Circumcision rates in the U.S. are dropping as more parents opt out of genital surgery on their newborn baby boys. Unfortunately, this has left a vacuum of proper care information from the previously circumcised generation. Many parents and caregivers (medical providers included) do not know much about the male foreskin, and that can cause harm to your child.

Healthy Beginnings | September 2017

A boy’s foreskin will become retractable between the age of 2 and puberty, and sometimes even beyond. During the separation process, there can be signs and symptoms that are startling to the uninformed caregiver. One sign of separation is smegma, this occurs when cells that have connected the foreskin to the head of the penis start to dissolve and slough off. These cells can clump together looking like white specks or pearls. Smegma only needs to be rinsed off with water (just as we would do with young girls who go through a similar developmental stage). Some boys will have ballooning of the foreskin as they pee. This is a normal process, and as long as they can pee without pain there is no need to be alarmed. A boy should be the only person to retract his foreskin prior to sexual activity. Once it has retracted on its own, he should be instructed to pull it back and rinse with warm water only. No soaps or harsh chemicals needed, as they disrupt the normal genital flora. If a rare infection were diagnosed, the use of antibiotics and anti fungal creams would be the first line of treatment. All less invasive options should be considered before a circumcision is recommended. Getty Images

A boy’s foreskin (prepuce) is fused to the head (glans) like your fingernail is fused to your finger. There is no special care required, you only need to clean what can be seen and wipe it like you would a finger. Problems arise when parents and medical providers retract or pull the skin back, causing microscopic tears and exposing the internal structures to bacteria. This can lead to infections and over time scar tissue, which doctors may want to fix with a ‘medical’ circumcision. As long as a boy can pee, he has no medical need to retract his foreskin, even if a catheter or other intervention is required.

The foreskin is an important part of male sexuality and has many functions. As we learn more about normal male anatomy, we can be assured it is completely safe to leave our babies as perfect as the day they were born, just as nature intended. WHY A GLUTEN-FREE DIET IS NOT A FAD AND WHY YOU SHOULD TEST FOR GLUTEN INTOLERANCE By Van Harding, LAc

The top 24 emerging autoimmune diseases in the industrial world are connected to gluten intolerance. What do those countries have in common? They consume U.S. exported processed foods that contain hybridized grains and gluten.

Getty Images

Why is this happening today? Our food has changed too quickly for our immune system to adapt to the ‘new proteins’ that are in our hybridized grains. A quick review of farming practices and our immune system will explain how we got here. At the end of World War II, U.S. grain farmers had a huge challenge. Europe’s food supply system and farming was decimated, and therefore had no ability to feed itself. Subsequently, the U.S. had to rapidly increase grain production to prevent starvation and chaos on that continent. That demand lead to repeated hybridization of grains to increase the harvest quantity per acre.

It is estimated that 40-60 percent of the U.S. population are gluten intolerant and this leads to and/or contributes to many chronic illnesses, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders and neuro-psychological issues. Gluten intolerance is also a suspected contributing factor to cancer and heart disease. The identification of intolerance requires specific testing, and confirmation requires major dietary changes to address healing at the root cause and those changes are more complicated than just eliminating gluten. What is gluten? Gluten is a term loosely used to label a group of 12 proteins that are in wheat, rye, barley, spelt and any grain with the name wheat. Gluten first hit the medical headlines two decades ago because of the emergence of Celiac’s disease, which is a disease where the person has a genetic coding for their immune system to produce antibodies that destroy the intestines when the intestines are exposed to Alpha-Gliadin-17 (one of the 12 proteins). Today, we have a new disease that does not require a genetic coding, and it is called Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS), a.k.a. gluten intolerance. With NCGS, the immune system is reacting to any of those 12 proteins causing inflammation and/or antibodies that can damage many parts of the body and how the body functions. The food manufacturers and restaurants use the powdered form of gluten (extracted from wheat and other grains) and add it to many processed foods to make breads and pastries fluffy, make gravies more creamy, prevent salad dressings and condiments from separating, thicken soups and more.

Many Non-Celiac gluten sensitive patients will have developed neurological issues or autoimmune diseases before the onset of significant gluten intolerant symptoms.

26

What is hybridization? It’s like two people producing a child, the offspring of two grains (or people) will have many similar traits along with its own unique features, and with that comes a different DNA sequence. (Note: GMO is a laboratory process of hybridizing grains.) It is this different DNA sequence that can be incompatible for a person’s immune system. Think of your immune system as having soldiers who have been given orders to ‘seek and destroy’ the Gluten intolerance can enemy that are wearing blue-colored contribute to the developclothing: Hat, shirt, pants, shoes and ment of cancer because it scarf. While on patrol, they discover increases inflammation, and a group of enemy troops wearing blue-colored hats, shirts, pants, shoes inflammation can ‘turn on’ and red scarfs. What will the soldiers cancer genes. do? If they are ‘hyped up’ (sensitive/ intolerant), they will destroy that group because “4 out of 5 traits matched, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.” In our bodies, if the immune system is intolerant to gluten, it can produce antibodies (soldiers) that misidentify and destroy cells, tissues, glandular secretion, brain tissue, blood vessels and more. If I’m gluten intolerant, will non-gluten foods be eliminated from my diet? If you are gluten intolerant you will need to eliminate oats, corn, rice, yeast and cow’s dairy. Eliminating these foods is necessary because of gliadin cross-reactivity, which causes a gluten intolerant immune system to misidentify the proteins in oats, corn, rice, yeast and cow’s dairy to be gluten and then react the same way (produce inflammation and/or antibodies) as if those foods were gluten. About 50 percent of people who are gluten intolerant are experiencing this type of confusion, and therefore those foods are eliminated because it is “better to be safe than sorry.” The requirement of a gluten-free diet is not only the elimination of grains that contain gluten, but also includes those gliadin cross-reactive foods.

Healthy Beginnings | September 2017

Scientific research studies have confirmed the following diseases can be exacerbated or caused by gluten intolerance: Acid Reflux, GERD, Alzheimer’s Anxiety, Asperger’s, Autism Cancer, Cerebral Palsy, Crohn’s Depression, Dementia Diabetes (Autoimmune) Hashimoto’s, Heart Disease Infertility, IBS, IBD Multiple Sclerosis Myasthenia Gravis Parkinson’s Vascular

Why gluten-free products are not safe for the gluten intolerant. If you are gluten intolerant there are two reasons why gluten-free products are not safe. First, the food manufacturers stopped adding wheat-derived gluten to some products in response to the Celiac’s disease population. About a decade ago the general scientific understanding was that the problem was solely confined to the protein in wheat, and so the food manufacturers substituted gluten from other grains. Today, we now understand that the gluten reaction is not limited to wheat, but the food manufacturers have not updated their products. Therefore, a label that states “gluten free” only indicates that the product is “wheat gluten free” and as such gluten intolerant immune systems can react. Secondly, the “gluten free” products may contain the gliadin cross-reactive foods (oats, corn, rice, yeast and/ or cow’s dairy) and the gluten intolerant immune system has a 50 percent chance of reacting. What is the best test to identify gluten intolerance? At my clinic, we utilize the laboratories that test both IgG and IgA reactivity. Most laboratories only test IgG reactivity and therefore can miss if the individual person is IgA reactive. As well, if you are gluten intolerant, it is important to test for other food sensitivities and allergies that maybe contributing to inflammation, and those foods need to be temporarily eliminated from the diet until the immune system calms down.

Foods that typically contain gluten: Baking mixes Canned beans Condiments Cream sauces Gravy mix Packaged and processed meats Pastries Pie fillings Salad dressings

THE PDO “NON-SURGICAL” THREAD LIFT

THE 30-MINUTE FACELIFT: YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED By William Clearfield, D.O. “The Botox and fillers look great,” Barb said. Sitting in our treatment chair, she looked side to side, admiring herself in a handheld mirror, but with a slight frown on her lightly freckled face. You do this job long enough; you know that look. “More lift,” I said. “Especially in the neck and jaw line.” Barb took her index and middle finger, placed it on the angle of her jaw and pulled the skin back toward her ear. She performed her very own, temporary neck lift. Barb is a great patient. She came to us almost in desperation suffering from hot flashes night sweats, irritability and problems sleeping. After our first evaluation, she began a Bioidentical Hormone Replacement regimen. Soon after, she became her old self again. “You fixed my insides, Dr. Clearfield,” she said. “Now it is time for the outside.” Getty Photos

After balancing her hormones, we Botoxed the frown lines between and around her eyes, and added dermal fillers to raise her cheekbones, enhance her lips and improve her skin tone using our Vampire Facelift. “I think you look great, Barb,” I said. Barb shook her head. “No,” she said, tugging the loose skin under her neck back toward the angle of her jaw. “This needs a hiking.” Barb flattened both sides of the offending skin with her index finger and middle finger. “I have got something new for you,” I said. “No surgery,” she said. “I have to work. I can’t afford downtime.” “No surgery,” I replied. “I have these new threads. They create a true lift.” “Eh,” she said. “Threads? I did them 10 years ago.” She pointed to a messy scar behind her ear. “Those were ‘permanent’ sutures,” I said. “They were inserted behind your ear and tied together, breaking easily leaving one side uneven. These are different. These are called polydioxanone or PDO threads. PDO fibers dissolve after 4-6 months and require, at most, only a minute pea size, less than 1/10 of 1 milliliter, of anesthetic. They are not needles, so there’s no cutting. We thread them into place, advancing them over your skin like a curtain rod over a curtain.” “What about the ties?” She replied. “You will have a terrible time getting through those scars.” “No ties,” I said. “When we have them in place, we smooth the threads engaging the underlying dermis. If there is excess thread, we cut them in a downward motion burying them under the skin. You will not know they are there. These threads work great on the cheeks, brow, jawline, neck, nasolabial folds, marionette lines and on sagging arms, hands, thighs and abdomen.”

28

Healthy Beginnings | September 2017

“You know, I lost all that weight awhile back on your Paleo Cleanse Diet and I have gobs of loose hanging skin. Can we use PDO threads for that?” She asked. “Not only on loose hanging skin,” I said. “We can even place them in the middle of the forehead.” “Wow,” Barb replied. “I’m up on everything cosmetic. Why haven’t I heard of this?” “PDO threads are popular in Asia, the Philippines and Korea,” I said. “They are relatively new here, but are catching on fast. Not only do we get a bit of instantly gratifying skin tightening and lifting, but long term, the texture of the skin continues to improve.” “Once they are in, they are in, no?” Barb asked. The threads agitate the tissue directly underneath the surface creating micro-traumas. The body responds by kicking into gear its normal regenerative processes, specifically the migration of fibroblasts. As the threads dissolve, the fibroblasts produce collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, structural components of the skin. “The threads absorb in about 6 months creating new collagen layers by creating a selective inflammatory response. The result is a controlled healing. The skin holds in place for up two years. We insert the sutures under the skin to tighten and lift problem areas. For skin tightening in the cheeks, under the neck, the jiggly part of your arms, hands, abdomen or legs, we use smooth fibers in a Tic-Tac-Toe-board or hashtag-like pattern. For a lift of the nasolabial folds, marionette lines or neck, for example, we use “barbed” or “cog-like” filaments to grip the skin. Once in place, we pull them both up and out, instantly repositioning the skin to where it was before the ‘fall.’” “You are sure, no cuts?” Barb asked. “I promise,” I replied. “No cuts. The skin tightening hashtag threads are tiny needles, inserted parallel to the skin, in the subdermal layer. When they are in place, all 5-7 needles are pulled out leaving the threads behind.” “And the longer ones?” She asked. “Those are cannulas, blunt-edged,” I said. “We use our less than pea sized local anesthetic here to create a tiny opening, then we insert them under the skin. When they are in place, we pull them back, smoothing the wrinkles and lines along the way. The ‘barbs” or ‘cogs’ catch the skin pulling it in the direction we want. We then cut the sutures, burying them under the skin. No knots. No skin bumps. The sutures themselves dissolve in 4-6 months all while stimulating collagen growth. The skin stays in place up to 2 years or more.” “So, how does this new and improved thread lift hold up against fillers?” She asked. “The thread lift will last anywhere from 18 months to a few years, and additional threads can be added anytime as maintenance. The cogs and barbs stimulate collagen continuously, resulting in continuous improvement over time.” No need for fillers anymore?” Barb asked. “When we combine procedures, we see even better results. We often use the absorbable suture lift in combination with fillers, Botox, PRP and our so-called Vampire Facelift creating a synergistic effect. Instead of 1+1=2 we get 1+1=5. The results can last many years and with maintenance, theoretically, will never wear off.” “And they are safe? ” She asked. “35 years of heart valve experience with these very same threads,” I replied. Barb settle back in the treatment chair. “Thread me, doc.” To find out if the PDO Thread Lift or any other facial and body rejuvenation treatments are right for you, call Clearfield Medical Group at 775-359-1222 or email doctrbil9@gmail.com.

ASK THE EXPERTS Q&A: WHAT IS PHYSICAL THERAPY? A DISCUSSION WITH DR. PARLEY ANDERSON, DPT, OCS By Healthy Beginnings Staff Q. What is physical therapy? A. I’ve been practicing since fall 2003, and I still don’t really have a great definition of what physical therapy actually is. Is it exercise? Is it stretching? Is it education? Is it mobility? Is it strengthening? Is it restoration of function? It’s a little bit of everything, depending on what the patient needs. At Active Physical Therapy we don’t utilize a lot of the traditional physical therapy modalities that many clinics use, such as ice, heat, ultrasound or electrical stimulation. We focus on education, exercise and manual therapy. Dr. Michael Spevak and myself specialize in orthopedics. We are both board certified in orthopedics and we treat a variety of musculoskeletal skeletal disorders [that involve the] knee, shoulder, spine, hip or ankle. We’ll also see individuals with vertigo and headaches, [and] we’ve done some post-stroke rehab. Q. What does a physical therapist do? A. Let’s say a patient comes in with an injury, or a problem with their shoulder. At the first exam, we evaluate shoulder motion and shoulder strength, and then perform a special test to help figure out what the diagnosis is for the patient. From there, we will try to figure out what the patient first needs to do to help themselves. So, let’s say they have a lot of pain when they try to lift their arm up over their head. We will try some different testing and movements to try and figure out what makes it easier for the patient to lift their arm up. Whatever that movement or motion or stretch or force is, we teach it to the patient and then have them do it consistently. That’s how a physical therapy evaluation and home exercise program are started. We offer machines and equipment tables where the patient Getty Images

“Soreness, stiffness, weakness and imbalance are keywords that indicate that you might need a physical therapist. Balance is like a muscle, if you challenge it, if you train it, if you work it, it gets stronger. If you neglect it, it atrophies, weakens and eventually fails.” can do their therapeutic exercises. Now, I may decide that I’m going to do some manual therapy on that shoulder as well, meaning I’m going to stretch or push or pull or tug or mobilize the shoulder in different ways to help restore motion, decrease pain and help with functional movement of the shoulder. Q. Why should a patient consider going to physical therapy? A. If someone suffers from an injury, a fracture, a tear, a sprain or a strain they may need to go to a physical therapist to regain functional movement, to regain motion and strength, and to get rid of pain and stiffness to that injured body part, area or region. In that case, they may be referred to a physical therapist by a doctor or a surgeon. Historically, if a patient is suffering from joint pain, is having balance problems or can’t get rid of neck pain, they’ll go to their doctor who will assess and then decide what to do from there. Most of our patients that end up here are referred by some sort of primary care practitioner, surgeon or orthopedist. However, more and more insurances are saying that you don’t need to go to your doctor first. If you hurt your shoulder, you can go straight to your physical therapist. It’s becoming more and more prevalent over the years. Right now, I’d say about 20 percent of our patients come to us without a referral. If you look at therapy around the world, in most modern developed nations, if you hurt yourself you go to a “physio” (a common term for physical therapist).

Q. Does insurance cover physical therapy? A. It’s really easy to call and make a physical therapy appointment. At the time you call the receptionist, front desk attendant or office manager, they will ask you if you have insurance, and then they will contact your insurance company to figure out what your physical therapy benefits are. You can also always pay cash – each clinic has a cash pay rate. 5 Reasons to Make an Appointment with a Physical Therapist 1. You’ve lost function. 2. You have pain. If pain lingers, especially after rest, call a physical therapist. 3. You’ve been in a car accident or other traumatic event. 4. You suffer from arthritis and/or joint problems. 5. You suffer from dizziness or chronic headaches. Active Physical Therapy is the outpatient physical therapy clinic of Dr. Michael Spevak and Dr. Parley Anderson. Active Physical Therapy specializes in a variety of orthopedic injuries as well as the spine. Common injuries treated include neck and back pain, running injuries, shoulder pain, knee pain, sports performance, post-surgical rehab, pre-surgical rehab, injury prevention/ wellness, motor vehicle injuries and more. Healthy aging. In 1948 the World Health Organization defined health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Being in an optimal state of health is something we have to work toward and maintain. As we age, we have to be flexible and learn to change our routines in order to maintain a state of health throughout the various stages of our lives. The same practices that kept us healthy in our twenties and thirties will most likely not work when we get into our forties, fifties and beyond. To understand what will work, we must pay attention and practice mindfulness. Maintaining our health requires that we adapt as the days and years go by. Instead of working toward an optimal state of health, our society seems to be obsessed with reversing aging, a concept that is actually not possible. A report by BBC researchers titled “Anti-Aging Products and Services: The Global Market,” states, “the global market for anti-aging products and services is expected to grow from $281.6 billion in 2015 to $331.3 billion in 2020.” This number includes everything from topical creams to plastic surgery. All for something that is not possible, age reversal. Sure, we can tuck this and nip that and use creams to keep the skin hydrated, but in the end we all have the same fate, we age. So, perhaps instead of trying to avoid an unavoidable fate, we can instead embrace it. Here are some tips you can try that will contribute to a more wonderful aging experience.

Healthy Beginnings | September 2017

1. Keep your attitude positive. If you think of your age as a means to wisdom and find excitement in gaining that wisdom, then you will have a much better experience with the aging process. 2. Pay attention to your diet. The only thing medical professionals seem to be able to agree on these days is that everyone needs to eat more vegetables. Whether you follow a paleo or vegetarian diet, almost everyone needs to increase their intake of vegetables, especially vegetables rich in color, low in carbohydrates and high in fiber along with a decrease in the amount of meat and sugar in the diet. Doing this will decrease the amount of advanced glycation end products, which actually accelerate aging.

3. Exercise regularly. Muscle is lost rapidly as we age, but exercise, and resistance exercise in particular, can help increase mass and strength well into the golden years. Plus, regular exercise can decrease the chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease by 25 percent. 4. Stay social. According to a study published in PLOS Medicine, those with strong social ties were shown to have a 50 percent higher chance of living longer than those with insufficient relationships. 5. Get regular sleep. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Not only does regular sleep help reduce the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes, it also releases a growth hormone that helps keep the skin healthy by restoring collagen and elastin, which are the essential building blocks of young healthy skin.

8 WAYS TO HELP YOU ACHEIVE BEAUTIFUL SKIN… AT ANY AGE By Michelle Czarka

As much as we would like to, there is no halting the aging process. It’s a fact of life and a fact that, instead of dreading, we should celebrate. But, it’s a lot more fun to celebrate when you look fantastic. Until the fountain of youth is discovered, here are a few tips to have amazing skin at any age: 1. Live healthy. Drink your water, eat your veggies, don’t smoke, don’t overdrink, limit unsaturated fats, carbs and dairy, and workout. 2. Always wear sunscreen. You’ve been told this your entire life, so it should come as no surprise that sun damage is a leading cause of aged skin. Always use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. 3. Cleanse gently. Never go to bed mad, and never go to bed with a dirty face. Always wash your face every night before bed to remove dirt and impurities, but do so kindly

as soaps and washcloths can be damaging to sensitive skin. To feed your skin while cleaning away the day, use the Oil Cleansing Method: a natural skincare method that breaks the drying cycle found with soap. During OCM, the oil cleanser massaged into your skin dissolves pore-clogging oils and breaks down makeup, while also allowing your skin to absorb the hydrating nourishment it needs. The cleanser is then gently steamed off with a warm washcloth. 4. Exfoliate. Your skin is composed of layers of skin cells, and often dead skin cells remain bound to the skin causing your skin to appear dull or damaged. Exfoliating weekly removes dead skin cells and reveals new skin cells, which allows skin layers to turn over faster. The result is a younger and more glowing complexion. 5. Moisturize. Daily moisturizing is vital for healthy skin and regularly using a healthy moisturizer should be a part of any good skin care regimen. Choose a lotion with plenty of antioxidants and vitamins to protect new skin and fight skin damage. Our favorite powerhouse, green tea extract, has anti-inflammatory and anti-growth qualities to reduce the appearance of puffiness, wrinkles, fine lines and large pores, and boost cell reproduction. It also has a strong antioxidant effect that protects the skin from the damaging effect of free radicals and it contains methylxanthines, which stimulate skin microcirculation to positively influence the tone and health of the skin. 6. Repair. As skin matures, it’s gradually depleted of essential nutrients, which can cause skin to become dull, parched and less resilient. Repair serums work to reverse the signs of past damage by boosting skin cell reproduction, reducing the appearance of fine lines, lightening age spots, and revitalizing skin toner and texture. Apply nightly.

7. Sleep sweetly. Now that your face is clean and hydrated, drink a glass of water (and place a full glass next to your bed) before tucking yourself in for a peaceful slumber. During deep sleep, the rise in growth hormones allows damaged cells to become repaired. Without the deeper phases of sleep, this doesn’t occur, allowing daily small breakdowns to accumulate instead of being reversed resulting in more noticeable signs of aging. If you have trouble dozing off, try brief meditation to quiet the mind and welcome in Dreamland. 8. Embrace your age. There are endless methods and tricks for turning back the clock, but it is impossible to avoid the aging process altogether. And let’s be honest, it’s better to grow old than to not. Instead of fighting against age, embrace it. Your skin has been there for every second of your life. Every wrinkle comes with a story. Enjoy the memories your body has lived through, endured and rejoiced. Treat yourself kindly and show your appreciation for all you have accomplished. Love yourself and love your age. NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: SIERRA NEVADA JOURNEYS

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES MAKE CHILDREN HEALTHIER, COGNITIVELY BRIGHTER By Megan Duggan, Marketing and Communications Director for Sierra Nevada Journeys

Exposure to environment-based education also significantly increases student performance on standardized tests, according to the National Wildlife Federation. Schools are experimenting with environment-based education by bringing children out of the classroom and into nature, or by encouraging more recess throughout the school day. TODAY reported on an elementary school in Fort Worth, Texas that has been inspired by Finland’s education system, which produces students who get the best scores internationally in reading, math and science. They are allowing kindergartners and firstgraders to have four 15-minute breaks throughout the school day, three times longer than they are used to getting. Initially, teachers were nervous, however, the results have been astonishing. One teacher reported that her students were less fidgety and more focused in the classroom. They are listening with more intent and solving problems independently. Sierra Nevada Journeys knows first-hand the power of getting children outside to observe and interact with nature. In our Classrooms Unleashed program, our teachers go into the classroom three times to introduce science concepts that are aligned with state standards. They then take students on a field trip outdoors. This is where we see students most engaged in learning with their peers and critically thinking about their surroundings. Fifth and sixth-grade students get an extended outdoor classroom experience during our overnight outdoor school program at Grizzly Creek Ranch near Portola, Calif. Due to spending more time with our team, we see improvements in students who typically struggle in their indoor classroom setting. Sierra Nevada Journeys’ Residential Program Director Megan Hollenbeck was a middle school teacher prior to getting into outdoor education. She once had a student who struggled in school and fought with his peers. After a rough school year, he had the opportunity to go on an outdoor education field trip.

Getty Images

“While sitting in a circle under a large pine tree, this boy introduced himself with a big smile on his face,” said Hollenbeck.

Submitted by Sierra Nevada Journeys

Sierra Nevada Journeys uses the power of outside experiences to make science learning fun and engaging for children and to help them develop critical thinking skills, while inspiring them to be good stewards of our natural resources. Those outcomes alone are positive, but studies show that getting youth outside also offers a host of health benefits. For example, National Wildlife Federation reports that the outdoors has numerous health benefits for children including body, mind and spirit. Spending time outside raises the level of vitamin D, helping protect children from future bone problems, heart disease and diabetes. Exposure to natural settings may be widely effective in reducing Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHA) symptoms, and children’s stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces.

WORK HARD

.

As the week went on, he became highly engaged with his instructors and educational activities. “He was excited about learning,” said Hollenbeck. “I was so proud and happy for him that being in the outdoors was impacting his learning and social experiences.” Outdoor education can be a turning point for students. When students’ mind, body and soul are aligned, it is more than likely you’ll begin to see improvements in school performance. Take the opportunity to bring your children and students outdoors and experience the benefits first hand. Sierra Nevada Journeys invites you and your family to attend SNJ ScienceFest on Sept. 23 at Washoe County’s Bartley Ranch Regional Park from 4-6 p.m. Register for free at bit.ly/SNJSCIENCEFEST.

THE POWER OF ENZYMES AND MITOCHONDRIA IN PROMOTING HEALTHY AGING By Glenn A. Hausenfluke, ND

In order to start the process of achieving optimal health, you first must know what you are up against. Avoiding environmental toxicity and oxidative stress, as well as embracing healthful eating habits, are key in keeping your immune system razor sharp. So, what are the viable nutrients that you need to keep your metabolism in check and protect you from ill health as you age? To learn, become a citizen scientist – meaning study and learn – or call your local naturopathic or homeopathic doctor, who have extensive experience in this area.

Enzymes

One of the key ingredients that assists with the elimination of toxins in the body includes enzymes. Enzymes are energized protein molecules that assist your body in breaking down food in preparation for digestion, metabolization and elimination. In their primary role, enzymes are catalysts, which are substances that accelerate and precipitate the hundreds of thousands of biochemical reactions in the body that control life’s processes.

“Antioxidants and phytonutrients promote healthy aging by fueling the mitochondria and providing the body with the metabolic function to keep the body systems working optimally.” As we age, the amount of enzymes in our system are gradually used up and need to be added nutritionally. A quality digestive enzyme is an invaluable asset to digestion and elimination. While the body manufactures a supply of enzymes, it also can and should obtain enzymes from food. Raw food will produce the most benefit as heat destroys enzymes.

Mitochondria

Oxidative stress leads to aging and system breakdown. But, what is oxidative stress? The term can be broken down into three basic categories: infections, toxins and biological factors that disrupt the body’s homeostasis. When your body is out of balance (homeostasis), oxidative stress and inflammation occur. Inflammation and free radicals damage the RNA and DNA contained in every cell in your body. This leads to mitochondrial damage (mitochondria is the energy-producing portion in every cell in your body). When the mitochondria are damaged, the cell can no longer efficiently produce energy for itself, it reverts to an inefficient method of energy production called “glycolysis,” which causes the body to depend on sugar for fuel. This is why so many people have a sugar addiction – their body is out of balance and crying for fuel! In this condition, the organs and body systems can no longer work properly. This will lead to more DNA damage, less energy (a common complaint) and the conversion of normal cells to cancer cells, as cancer loves sugar.

So, what to do?

Start building healthy mitochondria. Simply put, eat more fruits and vegetables. The Mediterranean-vegetarian diet has been shown to produce the most health benefits. Research has shown that the antioxidants and phytonutrients in fruits and vegetables will build and protect your mitochondria. Antioxidants and phytonutrients promote healthy aging by fueling the mitochondria and providing the body with the metabolic function to keep the body systems working optimally. The old adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is actually true, but it takes more than one apple in our current environment to maintain healthy mitochondria. So, what are you waiting for? Get on a health kick and be at your best! Dr. Glenn A. Hausenfluke, ND, has been practicing alternative medicine for more than 40 years. He is the founder of Mitochi’s MitoMungo, an all-natural dietary supplement that provides several pounds of fruits and vegetables in a 1-ounce liquid shot. “BRAIN CARE” – IT’S WHAT OUR CURRENT MODEL OF HEALTH CARE NEEDS TO MOVE TOWARD, HERE’S WHY

By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P., and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B. Unfortunately, “brain care” is not part of the common healthcare paradigm in either conventional or alternative medicine. In both branches, “health care” is a neck down practice despite the fact that current research acknowledges that the brain is one of the most fragile and susceptible organs to imbalances caused by poor diets and chronic stress. Evolving understanding in current neurology literature indicates that poor brain function is involved with, or is the cause of, many of our “incurable” chronic conditions. Yet, practitioners are not being trained to look for, recognize or manage poor brain function relative to the growing problems of degeneration and/or its relationship to many “common” conditions such as IBS, GERD, constipation, chronic UTIs and much more. Current awareness of brain function is relegated to recognizing these conditions only after they have progressed to the pathology stage, and are past the point of therapeutic return.

Getty Images

When poor brain function is identified, early lifestyle strategies can be implemented that not only impact the potential progression of such diseases as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, but can be efficacious in resolving a garden-variety of poor brain healthrelated symptoms such as sleep disorders, brain fog, mild depression, moodiness and anxiety. Increased age alone is a major risk factor for all neurodegenerative diseases and general brain symptomatic decline (fatigue, brain fog, poor endurance). The future practicing clinicians must develop the ability to recognize that most of the chronic symptoms and conditions that their patients present with have a brain-related component to them. The clinicians must also endeavor to learn the already established principles of neuroplasticity in order to improve brain function in all of their patients and change the expression of their disorders. We know that genetic and environmental factors play an important role in brain aging and function. An increasing body of evidence indicates that environmental factors such as nutrition, diet and lifestyle (stress) can actually influence the expression of genes, including those involving brain aging and function. Brain degeneration (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, specifically) is a progressive condition and any hope to make significant change lies in early identification. Again, most healthcare professionals are not trained in, and thus cannot recognize, the early signs of brain degeneration. Thus, there will be countless patients that they will not be able to serve beyond providing late intervention with pharmaceutical management to “improve quality of life” to a mild degree while the patient continuously declines. The incidence of brain disorders is officially on the rise. Not only do 1 in 8 senior citizens develop Alzheimer’s these days, but also 1 in 8 children are diagnosed with brain developmental disorder such as autism, ADD and ADHD. Anxiety disorders, learning disabilities and depression are much more prevalent today while “gardenvariety” symptoms of poor brain health such as sleep disorders, brain fog, mild depression and moodiness have become commonplace. Antidepressants are now the second most commonly prescribed medication in the country.

“Again, most healthcare professionals are not trained in, and thus cannot recognize, the early signs of brain degeneration. Thus, there will be countless patients that they will not be able to serve beyond providing late intervention with pharmaceutical management to ‘improve quality of life’ to a mild degree while the patient continuously declines.” The increasing rate of neurodegenerative and brain-related diseases and symptoms is alarming, and the sad part is that it’s controllable. Among the controllable risk factors causing these disorders are altered methylation, liver detoxification abnormalities, environmental pollutant exposure, abnormal blood sugar levels, essential fatty acid

imbalances, leaky gut, impairment of brain neurotransmitter activity, poor brain circulation and over-activation of the brain’s separate immune system. Sounds complex. It is and it isn’t. And it should be the clinician’s role, once early signs of brain dysfunction present themselves or when they appear part of the clinical picture of another more all-encompassing condition (think fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue), to develop a strategy to improve the patient’s brain health so that the patient’s overall health can improve and the patient then can maintain that higher quality of life. Though the tools are out there to accomplish this task, largely without medications, the fact remains that again “brain care” is simply not a part of the conventional health care paradigm in either conventional or alternative medicine practice. Pharmaceutical management and herbal adaptocrines do not constitute brain care. Brain rehabilitation exercises performed by a board-certified chiropractic neurologist based on precise findings from a comprehensive neurological evaluation have proven to be quite effective in improving brain function. Combined with the functional medicine approach to handle the inflammation, poor blood sugar responses and oxygen demands that a healthy brain requires (and that are negatively affected by the previously mentioned controllable risk factors), substantial improvement in brain function, reduction of brain symptoms and improvement of brain-related conditions is a consistently realistic expectation in most properly selected patients. Your teeth and gums need extra attention as you age. Today, three-quarters of people over 65 retain at least some of their natural teeth. However, people 65 and older also suffer higher rates of oral cancer, gum disease, dental decay and tooth loss. Here are some tips to help you keep your mouth happy and healthy at any age.

Dental decay can affect teeth of any age. Normally, the body has a natural mechanism for reducing the occurrence of dental decay. The saliva keeps debris from accumulation on the teeth while neutralizing acids and delivering nutrients to the outside of the tooth. As we get older, different medications that may be necessary can cause a reduction in salivary flow, eliminating the natural benefits of saliva for the teeth. It is important to offset these changes by using neutral pH mouth rinses, non-abrasive tooth pastes with a soft toothbrush and attending frequent professional dental visits. In cases where persistent dry mouth is seen, there are over-the-counter oral moisturizers, xylitol sprays and lozenges that help stimulate saliva production and help lubricate the mouth for comfort.

Gum Disease Gum disease affects over 50 percent of the adult population. Inflammation, bleeding and tenderness in your gums leads to loss of teeth and has been tied to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and other systemic conditions. It is important to have you teeth professionally cleaned at least two times per year, and if advanced gum disease is detected, have it addressed at an early stage. Daily maintenance at home is vital to maintaining gum health. This includes brushing and flossing at least two times per day. Electric toothbrushes, water flossers, plastic flossers and picks make it easy to keep you gums healthy at home.

"As you get older, don’t let your oral health be neglected. Proper treatment and maintenance is vital to reduce expensive and frustrating dental problems." Oral Cancer Since the average age of oral cancer diagnosis is 62 years old, it is vital to have any sores and white or red patches on your lips, tongue and cheeks evaluated and monitored by a dental professional. Early stage detection and treatment saves lives and will help maintain a high quality of life.

Loss of Teeth/ Missing Teeth Many people believe that they are too old for dental implants; however, this is not the case. Age alone does not play a role in a successful dental implant. The increase use of dental implants has opened up whole new treatment modalities for replacement of single teeth to a whole mouth of teeth. Being able to eat, laugh and smile without embarrassment or feeling self-conscious directly results in an increased quality of life.
