Hi everyone, How has everyone’s winter been going? Mother Nature isn’t cooperating very well with giving us snow, but we will work with what we have. The 4th Annual Pink Ribbon Ride was in Lake Metigoshe this year. Even though the weather didn’t cooperate we had a great time. There were a few brave souls that rode snowmobiles with the wind chill being 37 degrees below zero. The Ridge Runners did a great job preparing the lunch and Twin Oaks did a great job like they always do. Last year we raised $40,000 for breast cancer patients. This year
Hello fellow snowmobilers. I am really struggling with something to write about. No snow equals not much going on equals not much to write about. Tough combination. I look around the room here, which is ďŹ lling up with prizes we have been collecting for the state ride. Seems we have pretty much everything ready, the food, the band, lots of great prizes, just need some more snow! I guess we will just have to buck up, make some adjustments to our routes (more snow to the north), and make the most of it. When Perry and I threw our club into the running for the state ride, we had been to about ďŹ ve state rides between us. Most of our committee has not been to one. We decided it was just basically an overgrown fun run and that’s how we are running it. Hopefully you were at the State Ride and you can tell me how good or bad of a job we did. After we got the ride, we came back to the club and asked who wanted to be on the committee. We really have a great club, lots of hands went up. So we set up a committee and off we
we surpassed that. This is AWESOME! The state ride has come and gone. Congratulations to the people that won the rafe. I will give you an update next month on how the ride went.

went. We have sent and received a lot of emails the last few months. How did anything get done before email? The committee has been great and I thank all of you for volunteering your time. I know between jobs, kids, sports and life, time is limited and I appreciate you all. We will also have the 2013 state convention on this side of the state in December. It will be in Grand Forks on December 7. The convention has been in Bismarck, Minot and Rugby the last 10 years, so I, for one, am glad to get it back out this way. So once the State Ride is over, I will be helping Keri and Atari with the convention plans. We are looking into factory tours like they did back in ’01. Should be lots of fun. Let’s see if we can’t generate some excitement for the sport of snowmobiling! The end of June is the end of our biennium. That means we will be working on budgets this spring. With the registration numbers down, there will be cuts coming. The lack of snow has hurt us in many ways, the least

OFFICER’S NOTES
March/April 2012
My how time ies! Seems like yesterday we were getting ready for the State Convention and here we are with the end of the season almost in sight. We have driven and ridden many miles and seen many signs again this winter. The amount of snowfall was again the topic of many telephone calls, text messages and emails this year. The low snow years make it difďŹ cult to generate excitement for trail signing and trail prep. My praise goes out to all of you who work to make our trail systems great, especially that small core group in every area that does 90 percent of all the work. You know who you are! The Pink Ribbon Ride in the Peace Garden system was again a success. The weather was cold, but we did have three groups of riders that went out and enjoyed the
snow. It was a bright sunny day with temps below zero all day. Many riders managed to put on around 100 miles in the beautiful Turtle Mountains. As I write this we are looking forward to the state ride in Fordville in a couple weeks. The SND and ND Parks and Recreation staff spent some time in the Lake Metigoshe area working on and ďŹ lming Public Service Announcements dealing with snowmobile safety. We took some sunrise footage of a groomer in action along with various snowmobile trail riding scenes. The actors and Parks staff worked very hard acting in the various skits and scenes. It was an interesting week helping with equipment, looking for
Tod
areas to ďŹ lm in and helping stage for the actual ďŹ lming. We can look for these to be aired on television and radio next season. It has been an enjoyable season and I look forward to another next fall. Hope this ďŹ nds everyone safe and well!

North Dakota Park’s & Recreation Erik ietrich D Hey Snowcatters! This winter has been less than plentiful as far as snowfall is concerned! It has been better than last season but still not what any snowmobiler would like! The State Ride wrapped up in Fordville on February 16. Glad to see everyone there! 4
I am going i to talk lk about b riding idi on the h ice. That’s right, lakes, rivers, creeks and slews. These are places that a lot of snowmobile enthusiasts like to ride on but should also know some of the hazards associated with these bodies of water.
tracks going out onto the water, don’t tracks because it is probably not being driven on for a reason. NDPRD and SND recommends that the ice be at least eight inches thick it to be safe for you to take your snowmobile out on. A good rule to go by is if you see ice houses out on the lake or river, it is probably safe to ride on.
Ice iis a funny f thing, it could be 20 inches thick on one side of the lake and on the other side it could be two inches thick or have open water! Remember, be very careful when driving on bodies of water and never completely feel safe on the ice! Always be watchful of where you are going!! If you have any questions or any stories you would like to pass on, please feel free to call me at 701-3285357. Be safe and enjoy the snowmobile season! I’ll see you on the trail

OFFICER’S NOTES Sometimes in life we are faced with decisions on our next step in life. Each day I wake up I remind myself of one thing, “I’m going to live as if today is my last day!â€? Call it optimism; call it unrealistic; I’ll call it MY LIFE! Life happens and it creates who we are without us even realizing it at times. Of course, losing my Dad and my bud shaped who I am today and a big reason why I live my life for every moment. So the point to my preaching is knowing what you have and being thankful for every moment. It’s why when I received a call last October from another state snowmobile program requesting my application for employment to run the state snowmobile trails, I couldn’t look back and applied. It’s not every day you have someone knocking on your door asking for you to come work for them. I waited anxiously to ďŹ nd out if I was worth an interview and low and behold the call came in December. Then the call came that I got the job! When I applied, I didn’t know if I was worthy of the position. Sometimes I think applying just reassures us of being an intelligent employee that can handle the job. My conďŹ dence has deďŹ nitely grown during my term as Program Manager for Snowmobile North Dakota but I believe it’s because I’m convinced I can always do better and am always willing to learn more. I was just hoping others would see this. The toughest part about this entire process was leaving the great state of North Dakota and this Awesomo 5000 organization! I told myself I wasn’t going to worry about this unless I had to, well I had to. I’m thankful for the Board of Directors listening and I’m extremely thankful for the opportunities they have provided. It helped make a tough decision, not so tough and help me
realize where I belong. It wasn’t until I went through this entire process that I realized just how amazing the ND snowmobile trail program has become! I promised myself one thing when I did the interview, “Sell myself and sell what I do!â€? However, I didn’t forget one important piece, turn the interview on them! Now it was their turn to sell why I should work for them. Needless to say, the company failed miserably. When I turned down the position, they asked why? My response was easy; the ND snowmobile trail program is a leader in the snowmobile trail and safety industry including success in conducting the ďŹ rst Field Test to test grooming mechanics, production of snowmobile safety videos, a snowmobile publication and e-magazine, raised more than $150,000 for the Pink Ribbon Riders Patient Assistance Program and is a leader in groomer training. Yes, the ND snowmobile trail program is Awesomo 5000 and I’m ecstatic to except the Executive Director position for Snowmobile North Dakota as we all continue to set great examples in the snowmobile trail industry. As I write this article, I’m reminded of why I choose to live as if today is my last day. Social media has been blowing up for several days straight wishing prayers for Caleb Moore. I’m praying his life gets to experience many more jumps, twists and turns as he manhandles his ATV and snowmobile into
amazing tricks. You have provided many X Games and Hay Days fans with entertainment and left us in pure amazement. We love your show Caleb and wish you and your family the best! I also want to give a shout out to your sponsor and mechanic, Bikeman Performance and Joey Strub. Cheers to you guys, we wish you the best as you come home from X. Cheers to the summer of 2013!

By Keri Wanner The Ridge Runners snowmobile club of Fordville, ND took a chance and hosted its first State Ride on February, 16th. Weeks leading up to the event we all patiently waited for snow to take over the Red River South trail system, so those of us snow catters’ could take a trip on what this system has to offer. When the system finally received enough snow, it didn’t take much to get this troop rallied and out on the trails. Working day in and day out they opened up sections of trails, grooming daily making sure to have the best trails around for those willing to take a rip at this year’s State Ride. The Red River South trail system has some great hidden jewels along the trail system. Numerous times during the event, I heard one common saying from Board members and visitors; “I had no idea there were so many draws and valleys in this area, it’s really pretty and very cool!”
ǁǁǁ͘ũŽĞƐƐƉŽƌƚĐĞŶƚĞƌ͘ĐŽŵ
I even had the opportunity to ride with one lucky certified 12 year old as he ventured out on the trail for the second time since getting his certification. I had a blast watching him enjoy his snowmobile certification rights as he had a blast enjoying the trails and riding. The event was packed full of everything you could imagine. Food, Fun, Displays and of course Family and Friends! The vintage snowmobile show was held right on the street in all the festivities. Circling all this action were pickups and trailers, as the riders were out enjoying the trails. A couple riders road from Grand Forks to Fordville and were ready to register by 10 am. But this isn’t the craziest rider story. SND President Laura Forbes brought the pickup and trailer to Fordville so her husband Dean and son Mark could ride from Minot to Fordville.
They left at 7 a.m. on Friday morning and road trails all the way to Fordville. They pulled into town at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon with rosy cheeks and stories about their adventures. Next time you see Dean, make sure to ask him just how he got his helmet packed full of snow. I was told their favorite section of the trail was near Adams through the coulee. Saturday night as the evening celebration got under way, we relaxed to pulled pork sandwiches and homemade salads as the Ridge Runners started handing out over $5,000 in door prizes. Plus they distributed 100% payout from the 300 registrations. There were some happy cash winners that night! They closed the evening with a dance to Tripwire that rocked the house! The lead singer played eight instruments while he jammed on stage. These guys are extremely talented and led us all into the wee hours of the morning. Special thanks to the Ridge Runners for hosting a great event and Rockin’ the Ridge! We’ll see you on the Northeast Trail at the 2014 State Ride!

When did you ďŹ rst start riding? I got my ďŹ rst snowmobile when I was 4 years old. Who would win in a race between you and your Dad (Gabe)? Me hands down! Haha- I wish‌.. of course, My DAD! What are your goals for this snowmobile season? Finish the seven clan’s I-500 in the top 3 How do you manage both school and racing? It is hard. I put my time in from 8 to 2 at school and then I get to work at the Bunke Racing shop from 4-9pm. If I have extra time I will work out or work on home work. It is usually homework though. What’s your favorite type of sled? 2013 Polaris Rush Pro R 600 Who do you look up too in the snowmobile industry? Levi LaVallee, Ross Martin and my Father (Gabe Bunke) What’s your favorite part about racing? Pushing myself to catch and pass the guy ahead of me, and then run down the next guy. During the summer do you ride dirt bikes or ATV’s? If so, what kind? In the summer, I ride a 2000 Honda 250 2 stroke dirt bike. During the snowmobile race season we met some new friends, the Croakers from Kindred, ND. Mitch Croaker told us how they sold their cows to start snowmobile racing with his son Mayson and in the summer he was going to turn his pasture into a killer dirt bike track. He did and we helped him and now we go out there as much as we can and rip it up. That track really beneďŹ ted me with cross country racing! Out of all the pro snowmobile racers in the industry, is there one rider you were excited to meet or still looking forward to meet? I have been very fortunate. I have had the opportunity to meet many great Pro snowmobilers and legends. I guess if I could pick anyone in the world and time wasn’t a factor, it would be my grandpa Jerry Bunke! I would love to sit down and talk about snowmobiles and set-up. That would be a dream come true! What is your favorite type of terrain to ride and why? Well, we started out ice racing and that was fun, because it’s very technical and you need to have your sled set-up spot on and you need to know what you are doing. I’ve learned a lot from my dad. But, I also like a mildly rough Cross country course, because people tend to drive over their heads and make mistakes and I’ve learned to drive safe and ride smart. What is your favorite food? It’s a toss-up between pizza and a good bowl of chili. What is your riding gear of choice? Klim of course! It is awesome! Reliable, comfortable and stylish, who wouldn’t love to be sporting KLIM. What rider accessory (gloves, lucky coin, lucky underwear, etc.) can you not live without? Klim’s tactical shorts How do you prepare yourself before a race? I just try to be more prepared than the next guy both mentally and physically.

UPDATE U PDATE ffrom rom R Region 2 Hello, It is all about the weather. We have received enough snow to groom. After Todd Thronson was in our area, we had some additional signing that needed to be addressed. We have completed that. Jared Gefroh, Trail Coordinator, from Northern Exposure has been working with members on additional signing and on a schedule with his crew of groomer operators. Tri-County Snow Duster’s member Mike Bachmeier has been in constant contact with LRSC’s Larry Spidahl about grooming the trails on the east side of Lake Region Trail Association. With snow amounts varying, our area has had riders from as far as St. Cloud and Elko Minnesota. Where there is snow, people from across the region will travel there to ride their trail systems. Tourists have inquired about trail passes and did not know about being able to register for passes online. I have informed them that this is done by using North Dakota Parks and Recreation’s website.

I’ve heard other clubs say they are getting under way with their events. So some things are starting to happen. We might have to slam our winter into two months. Hopefully it will keep snowing. Some things are happening legislatively dealing with gas taxes so hopefully we don’t get hurt there. Plus we need to remind people to get the sleds registered. People just don’t realize what this does to us. I’ve seen people that don’t do So please people, get after it. It’s never to late to register the sleds. On the racing side... our crosscountry circuit is going take this, it’s fun watching hard charging racers go at it. Keep thinking snow,

UPDATE PDATE E fr from rom Region 5 My wife and I went out for a ride this weekend with some friends. Being that our trail system doesn’t have enough snow to open our trails, we loaded the sleds and hit the road. We got to our destination, and were ready to gas up and go. Stopped at a gas station and asked for a map of the local trail system. “Sorry, we don’t have any maps.â€? Well... this was our fault for not planning ahead and getting a map earlier. Well, we can hit the trails and stop in at a few places and pick up a map while we ride. So we unloaded and hit the trails. That is when the second thing became apparent, the signing was incomplete. We hit intersections where we could only go one way, because there were no signs going the other way, corners weren’t marked and with the wind that blew in the trails a little, we were off the trails looking for the next trail markers that weren’t there. By luck, we found a warming house. They must have a map. And they did‌from 2001. We tried to follow that, but it became apparent that the trail system had changed since then. With the help of a phone with GPS and map reading skills, and a little bit of luck, we found our way around for the rest of the day. The good news is that we were out riding and all had a good time. The bad part was is that this is an area that we may not go to again because of the frustration that it caused while we were out riding. This was a good reminder for me. Sign the trails so someone who has never been there before can follow your trails, and get those maps out when you open your trails. Ride Safe,
Troy Klevgard

Lake Region Snowmobile club Greetings from the eastern side of Region 2! As hard as it is to imagine, the time is upon us for the season to soon come to a close. Will March come in like a lion or a lamb? It is difficult to predict. Regardless, things just keep rolling along. The club kept busy with monthly meetings, planned 3 XVR Vintage Oval Races, a January Vintage Ride, Sweetheart/Lanny Riggin\Roger Perske Memorial Ride, a Joint Club Fun Run with Nekoma Trailblazers,Tracy Walter Memorial Radar Run, Ice Drags and are beginning to line up construction for the new 24 X 24 warming house. Thanks to SND for the $1,200 our club received from grant and aid to begin this exciting project. We continue fundraising with raffles through out the year. A late mention of our youth safety course. The youth safety course was held Monday, December 10 at Lake
Region State College. Thanks to Matthew Gardner! As always, you instruct a great class and cultivate enthusiasm for the sport of snowmobiling. Club members were on hand to meet the new riders and parents as well as sponsor pizza and milk for participants. Michael Kraft of Munich won a $100 gift certificate courtesy of Lake Region Snowmobile Club, James Uhlenkamp and Damon Sobolik won youth helmets sponsored by Yamaha Motor Corp, t-shirts, a hat and mug were donated by Radio Works. Thanks also to Greg at The Pizza Ranch! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! LRSC would like to recognize and thank some local actors that assisted in the production of public service announcement videos for SND/ND Parks and Rec. Breanna Frelich, Chris Fixen, Matt Bisenius, and Neslie Christofferson are active in the Playmakers at Lake Region
State College. LRSC made a donation to help with purchasing manuscripts for a future play production. Thanks also to Mrs. Jeanette Kenner for coordinating with these students and Matthew Gardner. Despite all the activities, there has been time for some fun. On Jan. 27 a small group for LRSC rode up into part of the northeast riding up to Fairdale, Adams, Milton, Nekoma, Edmore and Webster. Few photos to capture the fun. Rebecca Olson
Gasman Coulee Cruisers WIND CHILL ADVISORY! That is not enough to scare away the members and friends of the Gasmann Coulee Cruisers. As the season continues on, with a lack of snow the GCC members have had no problem getting riding in, many trips west have been made and a few more I’m sure to come. As a fact, in the middle of February there will be 20 members heading out on our yearly club trip to Idaho.
Planning has begun for meals, who’s riding where, and of course who’s bringing what games for night time at the cabin. Can’t wait to tell you all about the fun we have. With only a few meetings left, I’m sure there will be lots to keep you updated on, Safe Riding and Happy Trails! williston trail riders Hello from the Northwestern portion of the state. The Williston Trail Riders have had a busy fall and winter. Most recently we held our annual Snowmobile Races on February 3 in our home turf of Williston. We were crossing our fingers for good snow this year as last year our races were held on dry ground. Unfortunately wasn’t the best as the snow was pretty scarce. Definitely a huge change from two winters ago where we had more snow than we knew what to do with. Races included a wide variety of classes including vintage and kitty kat races. During the races we sold concessions and raffle tickets were available for purchase. After the completion of the races we held a closing feed and drew the winner of our raffle drawing. Money raised from the raffle and races goes to supporting our club as well as supporting local entities through donations. This year we have donated money to
Relay for Life, to a local resident who was injured in a severe vehicle accident, to a memorial for a local teen killed recently in a snowmobile accident, to Christmas for Kids and we provided two scholarships to local Williston State College students Derek Anderson and Megan Telehey. We continue to look for ways we can give back to our community. Our yearly club ride to the Big Horn Mountains was also held in February. This fun filled event was held on February 15-18 and is something we all look forward to. Getting out of the craziness that has become Williston, and burning off some steam, or should I say cruising through some powder, in the beautiful Big Horn Mountains is just what we all needed! In November our club participated in Williston’s annual Light Up Harmon Park Parade. This light filled parade is a big
event in Williston, which hi h is i held h ld to t kick ki k off ff the Christmas Season. Our snowmobile themed float won First prize in the parade. Not too shabby for our first time entering. December brought a family club Christmas party. We would all like to say thanks to all the club members who stepped up to freshen up the clubhouse and make it festive for the holidays. Everyone who attended had a great time and all the kids went home with a gift from the club. As winter continues to drag on we are all doing our best snow dance in the hopes of a little more snowmobiling fun. Katie Peterson
northern exposure Snowmobile Club Hello fellow crazy people who call themselves SNOWMOBILERS! I say this because as I sit at home writing this article its -25 degrees outside with wind chills down to -55! So the only explanation I can come up with for any of us wanting to live here, let alone ride snowmobiles; is that we are all completely crazy, nuts or at the least have a couple of screws loose! It was actually so cold here today that politicians had their hands in their own pockets! It’s been so cold my car won’t start running and my nose won’t stop! I mean you know it’s been a cold stretch when having a fever sounds nice! Why is it when the weather man says it’s going to be 80 and sunny he is never right but when he says it’s going to be -20 he is spot on every time? I guess that’s why they say you’re better off with a broken clock in your house then a weather man; at least the clock is right twice a day! Well it’s been another winter without a lot of snow. We have be lucky enough to get all our trails groomed even though a few stretches could use some more snow accumulation but for the most part our trails look good. Even with the lack of snow we still managed to have a few
mishaps where the groomer got stuck, but it wouldn’t be fun if everything went according to plan now would it. Naturally it was below zero when we got stuck because let’s be honest, nobody gets stuck when it’s warm out, I mean that would just take all the fun out of it, right?
be selling and drawing for our annual cash raffle prizes that night. Tickets are $5 and you can win one of 5 prizes. Cash prizes are $600, $400, $300, $200 and the last prize is a $150 prepaid gas card! I hope to see you there, for more info “like us on our Facebook page under Northern Exposure Snowmobile Club.
Our snowmobile club will be putting on a kid’s fun day on Saturday, March 16 in Bisbee, ND. As of right now all the details are still being worked out but I can tell you we will be having lunch at noon at the Bisbee city hall, a ride for the older kids out to and back from the warming house, where there will be refreshments during the day. For the younger kids and kids without snowmobiles we will have sledding and ice fishing at the Bisbee Dam. (Bring your own sled and fishing gear, we will have an ice auger on hand to drill holes for you if need be) we will have refreshments on the ice also. We will then be having a supper back at the hall around 5. We will then sign all the kids up for door prizes, we will have a silent action on both kids and adult snowmobile helmets, and for a grand prize we will be giving away a snowmobile jacket and bibs. We will also
I would also like to thank all the volunteers and members in our club. With your help we have turned our club around from almost closing down three years ago to a healthy strong club again! I am proud to say that every year for the past three years we have at least doubled memberships from the year before and this year alone we have doubled our family/personal memberships and are close to quadrupling our business/ associate memberships! It is because of all you volunteers and your hard work that this is all possible. Again, thank you very much for all the hard work.

rough riders snowmobile club
Hello fellow snowmobilers from the Roughriders! Well here we go again; Mother Nature seems to just want to tease us. Gives us just enough snow to get excited then warms up to melt what we have. Then on top of all that we have hardly any snow and throw us in the deep freeze! Come on already. Having two meetings a month making plans to do all sorts of events only to cancel them. I commend the club members and Gold sponsors on hanging in there. If we only had snow to work with we would be so busy with events planned. Now we are busy canceling events. Spending money on advertisements for functions that never happen, so depressing. Hang in there everyone! Right before Christmas we had a club meeting at one of our Gold sponsors, Planet Powersportz. We welcomed new Owner Dennis Drengson and the 509 touring semi. A very nice turn out for this sponsor and I think a lot of Christmas gifts were bought. I would like to see more club meetings at our dealers/Gold sponsors when there may be an opportunity like this touring 509 semi; these types of events bring enthusiasm to our sport and also a chance for the dealers to show off the product and possibly sell it. Now that the holidays are over, all should be enjoying the very nice gifts and family/
friend time had. And paying the bills for all the fun! We should also be enjoying riding our sleds here at home, but for us hard cores this means loading up truck and trailer and heading to the mountains. I do very much enjoy these trips, getting away, seeing the sights, riding deep powder and being with great friends. Oh and getting some very good laughs in, I would tell but most may be my mistakes. I made a trip to Island Park, Idaho right before New Year’s Eve; hooked up with Dennis Hulm or should I say they had an open spot on the trailer and were nice enough to offer me the spot. Had a great trip, made no junk or I should say I didn’t at least. What goes on in the mountains stays in the mountains is what they say, but until my friendship dues are received I may tell! We had a Gold sponsor’s demonstration day planned for the early part of January; everything was in place, we even had snow on the ground to use. Again, Mother Nature was not nice, with wind temps in the – 20s and lower and supposedly winter storm warning. We had to cancel; can you believe that, cancel an event because of snow or cold? I think the millions spent on equipment and software that the news stations use could be used for much better things like charities. Heck, just go ask the farmers and get just as close as they are. We as snowmobilers could have still had the event, but we were thinking of the people that wanted to partake in a free ride and the gold sponsors standing in the cold. So, now to re-plan the demonstration day.
Even though we canceled the demonstration day we got some club members together for a ride on the Heart River that Sunday. Weather man said high of -6 and 20 mph winds. Well so what? Let’s ride! It was a little chilly but man did we have fun! About 90 percent of the riders had never ridden the Heart River so it was a real treat for something new to ride and not always the ditches. By the way the trails are still not open so really we were not to ride our trails. Again, wish we had more snow here at home as it is so much fun to ride with the club members. Just back from my second trip to the mountains, 400 miles on my new sled and enjoying the heck out of it and my great snowmobile buddies. Our Community emergency response team (CERT) trained and qualified members will be taking CERT CPR/AED at our local Burleigh county sheriff’s department January 22 as this is needed for our continued education certification. Thanks to Tom Schroeder and all Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department members. Next planned event for the club will be a club ride in South Dakota and take in the ISOC race February 1 and 2. Plans are on hold for our fun runs until we get some snow and as stated before to re-plan demonstration day for our Gold sponsors. Ok I feel like I am getting a little winded here, so I hope all are getting a chance to go for a ride or planning a trip. Do not give up hope! 131 Racing Nabs Podium First Time Out At Soo I-500 Virginia, Minn. (February 4, 2013) Just days after his first cross-country Pro podium won in ditches and on the rivers of Oslo, Minn., Bobby Menne picked up and headed to the Soo I-500 enduro and qualified the team’s Soo sled a solid 15th in a field of 42 riders. Team 131 assembled an experienced crew led by 1994 race winner Ivan Hansen who helped put together a top pit crew including a former race director
for the event. Indy 500 winner (1973, 1982) Gordon Johncock was the special guest of the team for the weekend and also waved the green flag to start the race. To complete star crew, builder Larry from Larry Motorsports also on hand oversee the power plant.
the allengine Rugland Rugland was to help team’s
The Soo is just part of almost a week’s worth of racing on the 1-mile ice oval, and
leading into Saturday’s big race Menne won the Rookie Roundup Thursday morning and Thursday night raced the Woody’s Challenge Pro-Am race and finished 6th, beating a handful of more experienced teams and staying on the snow flaps of the Top 5 the entire 20lap race. While much shorter than the I-500, one thing the team knew after running the Rookie Roundup and Woody’s Challenge is they were set up and ready for the big show.
Saturday morning marked the start of the 45th Soo I-500 and from the time Johncock waved the green flag to start the prestigious 500-mile race on the historic 1-mile Soo ice oval Menne and his corider Mike Babcock put the Team 131 machine up amongst the frontrunners, running Top 5 most of the day. At one point Menne was three laps down (but still just behind the frontrunners in the running order), when Hansen, sensing the race could get away from them, went back to the trailer and grabbed a big orange hammer from the toolbox. During a yellow flag he stood on the bank and made pounding motions with the hammer to Bobby, signaling him to “put the hammer down” to which Bobby gave a “thumbs up” gesture. After that, Menne began pushing and within 100 laps he had gotten the three laps back and was on the
lead lap with 50-laps to go. Hansen and team manager Bob Menne discussed if they should hold the third position or push for the win and Menne made the decision to go for it. But, before Menne could begin a push for the lead the race was called with 46laps to go due to poor visibility. “I got my first Pro podium and first Soo I-500 podium within one week,” said lead rider Bobby Menne. “Our team worked hard to get my sled ready and keep me and my co-rider Mike Babcock at the front all day and I can’t thank them enough.” A Soo rookie, Bobby Menne rode 250-laps for the team and Team 131 was part of a Bunke Racing podium sweep at the Soo. “When we decided to race the Soo with our own team we knew with Bobby,
Mike Babcock and Ivan Hansen’s crew we had the right people to put the sled at the front,” said Team 131 Team Manager Bob Menne. “Our first time out we got a podium finish and we ran laps late in the race that were a half-second faster than anyone else. We proved we had what it took to at least challenge for the win had the race gone the full distance. We are happy to be part of the Bunke Racing effort.”
Twice As Sweet: Bunke Wins Second Straight Soo I-500 Moorhead, Minn. (February 4, 2013) - Only four riders have won the prestigious Soo I-500 enduro race twice in a row. Kadlec, Bunke Find Podium At USXC Seven Clans I500 was far down on the time charts in 14th. Pro Women rider Jen Fuller blew a belt and then lost a bunch of time when she had an off and had to flip her sled back over.
Moorhead, Minn. (February 12, 2013) Mere days off one of the most grueling races in snowmobiling, the Soo I-500, the Bunke Racing team traveled straight to an equally grueling 500-mile race, the USXC Seven Clans I500. While Bunke Racing swept the podium and took its second straight win at the Soo, the USXC I500 would not be as kind to the team, but they still locked down two podium finishes. Gabe Bunke led the field out on the Day 1 of the three-day race which began Thursday, February 7. Racers left Seven Clans casino in
Thief River Falls, Minn., and set out on a series of three loops that brought them to the gas stop in Plummer, Minn. Forced to break trail most of the day, Bunke had the 10th fastest time. Bobby Menne did a little better, setting the 9th fastest time, while Spencer Kadlec had a cylinder go down and
“You never know what kind of a start you’ll get for the I500 with the random draw starting order,” said Bunke. “Though I drew the No. 1 starting spot and we were blessed with a fresh 4-6” of snow for the start for the race, the slower pace through the fresh powder might have been the best and worst thing for our Bunke Racing sleds. The heavy pulling in the snow was slow,
but it was also some of the best riding I’ve had in years!” The next day things started to go Bunke Racing’s way. Day 2 sent the riders on a course that brought them to the fuel stop in Goodridge, Minn., and the day’s results proved much different for the team. Bunke set the second fastest time on the day, Menne set the 4th fastest and Kadlec set 5th fastest. That put Bunke riders 4th and 5th overall in Pro 600 and moved Kadlec up to 13th. “Track conditions were
awesome on Day 2 and a couple small sled setup changes from day one proved to be the right thing to do,” said Bunke. “I am really happy with how our sleds are running and handling right now. Our Walker Evans suspension is spot on and the new RipsawII Camoplast tracks we have been running are working awesome in both powder snow and hardpack conditions.”
mist in the air. Not good for cross-country racing.
After two days of clear skies, sun and good visibility, Day 3 dawned gray, with a freezing
That moved Menne into fourth position, but Menne crashed in the poor visibility and lost a bunch of ground, limping his sled into the finish on one cylinder in 11th position. Menne also finished 8th in Pro Open.
Riders left according to combined race time so they would be racing for position on the course, which brought them to the fuel stop in Warren, Minn. Bunke moved his machine into third place on the first leg, but lost his engine on the second leg and went out of the race.
Kadlec recovered from
a depressing Day 1 and his fast runs on Day 2 and Day 3 put him 8th overall in Pro 600 and landed him a third place podium finish in Semi-Pro 600. “Day 3 is always go day, if you want to win and you’re not in the lead going into the day it’s time for you to start taking chances,” said Bunke. “Unfortunately, I ran too close to the edge trying to find victory and lost my motor. Before that I passed the third place rider and things were going good. I don’t think I could have caught the second place rider since he was five minutes ahead and that’s a lot to make up, but I was in a solid third place. I just know it was a real bummer to lose the engine when I had a podium finish going.” Jen Fuller crashed in the flat light on Day 3 and dropped out of the race. Taylor Bunke finished an almost flawless three days of racing in the Trophy 600 class, claiming a third
place podium finish. Eric Christensen also had a clean four days of racing and nabbed a 4th place finish in the Masters 40+ class. “I knew I had to just put my head down and ride as hard as I could after Day 1,” said Kadlec, Bunke Racing’s top Pro class finisher. “I was in 14th place and 12-minutes behind first place. But anything can happen in this race and you just have to keep going. I’m pretty happy with 8th place in Pro 600 and a podium in Semi-Pro 600!” “When Gabe went out I knew I had moved up to 4th,” said Menne. “I had a lot of time to make up to catch the 3rd place rider but I think it was do-able, but it was so hard to see in that flat light and my goggles were icing I crashed hard. I was lucky to finish!” But I have to say the performance up to then and for the rest of the Bunke Racing team was awesome all week. I have to thank our sponsors for
giving us the ability to make these sleds this competitive. Pure Polaris Fuels and Lubricants have been the anchor behind our engine and driveline performance.” “We didn’t get the results we wanted but I’m proud of our team,” continued Bunke. “ “Everyone worked hard, no one quit and ultimately we salvaged some pretty decent finishes. I’m really proud of Taylor finishing his first I500 too. He did a great job and rode like a veteran.”

Defying Gravity By Keri wanner Over ten years ago... ...I remember popping in a VHS tape into the VCR making sure to not miss out on one minute of fun. Young’ns Google VHS and you’ll soon understand what I’m referring to. This was the time snowmobiling started to fill a few airwaves on TV but you made sure to record it because it played at all hours of the evening. I couldn’t wait till the next night after school, when I could replay the excitement and sit down with Dad to laugh and cheer on our favorite riders. This tradition carried on for years and then my dream came true. A race
came close enough to my hometown and I got to witness the excitement first hand. I packed my trusty bag so my friends and I could head to Deadwood, SD to attend the WSA (World Snowmobile Association) sanctioned snocross race. It was then I witnessed then semi-pro riders Tucker Hibbert and Levi Lavalle fighting for their own rights to fill a spot on the pro starting line. I still remember Levi finishing first and darting over in front of the stands to please the crowd with a handstand on the seat of his snowmobile.
These were the days Tucker crossed the finish line doing the world famous heel clickers revving up the crowd even more. Mike Island’s show will never be forgotten as he tumbled out of the whoop section. I think his sled completed 8 full turns before coming to a stop and I’m pretty sure Mike did too! However, he still ran to his sled at full speed ready to start it and keep going. And no one can forget the glory days of Blair Morgan ruling the track. He set the pace for snocross and is still a rider that is looked up to throughout the snocross industry. Man, these were the days and I couldn’t get enough of them.
Over time the races didn’t come close to home making it harder to get to them and then my bud that faithfully watched the recorded races on VHS with me, left too soon. I lost my interest in snocross but it never left my mind. I started becoming interested in other snow sanctioned races such as RMSHA (Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hillclimb Association) to fill my adrenaline need and I always made sure to keep up with Winter X Games snowmobile events. Then a couple years ago, ISOC (International Series of Champions) brought a snocross to Fargo, ND and I couldn’t miss out. I was all in and if it wasn’t for the -30 temps, I would have stayed for the whole thing. But it was then; I had to start following the race circuit again. So I was 100% pumped when I found out ISOC was coming back to Deadwood, SD. I couldn’t wait to experience the excitement all over again and even catch up on some of my
favorite racers. We took in everything we could from the races to the trailers and even the autograph session. I had the privilege of taking one of my small buddies through the session and it was fun to chat with the racers. I can tell you one thing, I know why Levi is so Awesomo 5000! His personality he exudes on TV comes through even in person. I was pumped to personally congratulate him on two Winter X Game Gold’s and telling him to heal up so he can get back out and ride. Plus I got to visit with Colby Crapo, rider for Leighton Motorsports. Colby was a fun rider to watch and even more fun to chat with during the autograph session. I have a feeling he’s going to do some great things in the snocross industry. Garth Kaufman also impressed me with his personality and was an excellent rider. Truthfully I could go on and on because all of these guys
are physically fit and can do amazing things on a snowmobile. Needless to say I’m hooked again! These guys put on an excellent show. They work hard all year to make sure they are in the best possible shape they can be when they hop on their snowmobile and hit that throttle. Throwing the machine over whoops and table tops and darting for the hole shot, all the while putting up with roost. If you are looking for excitement, definitely check out the Amsoil Championship Snocross governed under ISOC. In Deadwood, SD , I found out I still have that favorite snocross racer and am always excited to watch these guys defy gravity!
update from the
Dakota Trailblazers
Hello lovers!
snowmobile
It is hard to believe that winter is already coming to an end for this year. It has been a quiet snowmobile season for many this year due to low snow amounts. Every week it seemed we would get 2 or 3 inches of snow, but just not enough for a good base to groom. The last month it finally accumulated enough to make a good base. Local clubs all their fun runs
had and
participation has been good. The snow up at Lake Metigoshe has been good all winter so a number of us have been able to enjoy the trails and back country up there. Our club will have our last meeting of this season with the election of new officers. This means that this is my last official article. I would like to thank all of our current officers for their hard work this past year. LaDona Malachowski did a great job as president and Denise
Sherman Pladsen Dakota Trailblazers
Norsby was an excellent secretary/treasurer. I know our entire club is very appreciative of all the hard work that both of you have put in this past year with all of the club activities and duties. Thanks again! Hope everyone had a safe and fun winter, and maybe we will get lucky and still have a snowstorm yet this season! I also hope that everyone has a great summer and that it will lead to a snowy winter next year!
Learn to Ride rasmussen style By Keri Wanner I’ll never forget that trip. The night we arrived was full of meeting new faces and trying to remember names but I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to ride when Jody McKay, the Executive Director of the Pink Ribbon Riders, said be in the parking lot 9 a.m. if you want to ride. Of course, we were not going to pass
up this chance to have some fun before all the activities began to start. I remember sitting on my short track snowmobile feeling extremely intimidated as I was surrounded by long tracks and paddles for what seemed like miles. What I didn’t know is Corey was feeling the same way on his 144”. It was now are never, so I hit the throttle and off we went. There were about 20 people in our group so I choose to stay towards the back in fear I would hold someone up but as we entered the valleys and hills, the throttle got the best of me and I gave
my short track the ride of its life. I remember smiling inside my helmet and telling myself, I may not be able to take your track but I’ll get to where you are at. Just watch me! But all of the sudden I had to stop; stop and enjoy my surroundings because I was living life. It was during this stop, I realized I was surrounded by crazy people that were going to hurt themselves on their snowmobiles. I’ll never forget, sitting in this small clearing as an Arctic Cat zooms by $ % # was like lightening and then the unthinkable happened. I remembered getting ready to open my mouth to yell stop and that was % # crazy snowmobiler on the Arctic Cat tipped up his snowmobile on its side, seriously all I saw was track, drove between two trees which wouldn’t have been cleared otherwise and then dropped the machine to carve the next path. I was in awe thinking to myself, did this really happen? My eyes wouldn’t rest as they watched this snowmobiler dart from hill side to hill side, carving through trees and literally switching directions 90 degrees treading powder downhill.
I ended my ride that day, knowing I didn’t know who it was but I just witnessed something cool! Later that day, Jody introduced me to this crazy and amazing rider. It was none other than Bret Rasmussen who rocked my snowmobile world. For the next two days, I would be surrounded by Bret as he played and what started out as rider appreciation has since grown into a great friendship. Bret is that guy that is so down to earth, you wouldn’t think of him as a well-known rider. He’s that guy that goes the extra mile to help you out. [

Tucker Hibbert wins his 9th Pro Open main (out of 12) of the season in convincing fashion while NY’s Jake Scott doubles up in Pro Lite SALAMANCA, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2013) Western New York’s snowmobile-friendly atmosphere lent itself to an even larger crowd on Saturday for the Seneca Allegany Air Force Snocross round of AMSOIL Championship Snocross, presented by Traxxas and hosted by Seneca Allegany Casino. Thousands up on thousands of snowmobile racing fans spilled out from the packed grandstands and lined the sides of the wide oval track and climbed up into the
nearby mountainside to watch the world’s top snocross racers put it on the line at round 12 of the 16-round series. Two familiar faces would grace the top rung on the podium again at Seneca Allegany Casino as Tucker Hibbert (Monster Energy/ Arctic Cat) and Jake Scott (Mystik Lubricants/Loctite/ Polaris) complete their sweeps of the Pro Open and Pro Lite class races, respectively, and added to their leads atop the overall
point standing in each of the classes. Pro Open When the start light flashed green to open the Pro Open main event at Seneca Allegany Casino it was, for the second night in a row, Kyle Pallin (Mystik Lubricants/ Loctite/Polaris) who nailed the Stud Boy Holeshot. And nearly getting bounced out of the first turn - from his No. 1 qualifying spot and gate pick - was Hibbert, who managed to hold things together and got out of the first
turn in 4th place. Pallin’s lead would again be shortlived as Ross Martin (DuPont/Jack Links/ Polaris) blasted up front as the green flag flew on lap two of the 24-lap contest. But what looked to be a race that was shaping up between Hibbert and Martin soon turned into another clinic as Hibbert cracked the throttle and, in one fell swoop, launched past both Pallin and Martin on an outside line through the rhythm section and into the lead - a lead he’d never relinquish. “That was another wild ride. The track’s demanding and the pace was unreal,” said Hibbert. “But I’m pumped to be up here again ... it was a great weekend for us.” With checking
Hibbert out the
battle for the final Pro Open podium spots got interesting quick. Defending Pro Open champ Tim Tremblay (Scheuring Speed Sports/ Rockstar/Ski-Doo) had been flying all day, and by lap seven he was up to 4th place and pressuring Pallin. At the race’s midway point (lap 12) Hibbert was up by eight seconds on Martin and Kody Kamm (Polaris/ Monster Energy/ Hentges Racing) had moved up to 5th. By lap 17 Tremblay had since got by Pallin and was closing on Martin - who he passed with seeming ease as it appeared Martin began to slow in the later stages of the race. Pallin would then pressure Martin for 3rd, but went down in his effort between turns three and four. Martin slowed even further - running a 40-second lap late
in the race when 25 to 26-second laps had been the norm. Kamm would also pass Martin as well and made the final podium spot, with Tremblay in 2nd for his second podium finish of the weekend. “The first couple of laps it got crazy rough,” said Kamm. “But I capitalized on whoever fell off (Pallin) on the back part of the course when they were battling for 2nd and 3rd - and I was able to get up here.” Added Tremblay: “It was a good race. I worked my way up to 2nd place. The roost got really bad there at the end, but it was a good race overall. The fans from New York here were great.” With the win Hibbert increased his Pro Open championship points lead to 73
points over Tremblay, 489-425. Pro Lite Overcoming a high speed get-off that left him limping off the track in an afternoon qualifying race, Jake Scott again proved his mettle in front of his hometown fans, pulling another spectacular start out of the bag to open Saturday’s Pro Lite final at Seneca Allegany Casino, then riding a near perfect race to the checkers to complete the weekend sweep. Scott, in his pursuit of his first overall Pro Lite championship, would also get another boost in the points as David Joanis (Royal Distributing/SkiDoo), who was tied in points with Scott heading into this weekend’s racing, was black flagged for what ISOC officials deemed “overly aggressive riding”
in the Pro Lite main when Joanis collided with New York racer Corin Todd (Polaris) and knocked Todd off his sled. This would prove to be a huge blow to Joanis’ championship hopes. “He (Joanis) was riding too aggressively and clearly took Todd out,” said ISOC’s Carl Schubitzke, President of Racing and Operations, on the black flag on Joanis. With the potential 2nd (Todd) and 3rd (Joanis) place finishers now out of the running for the podium spots behind Scott, Andrew Carlson (Polaris/Carlson Motorsports) and Renaud Alexandre (BOSS Racing/Jimmy John’s/Ski-Doo) would each move up a couple notches and round out the podium in the crazy Saturday Pro Lite
main event at Seneca Allegany Casino. With the victory and Joanis’ subsequent black flag Scott takes a 19-point lead in the Pro Lite overall championship points chase to the penultimate round of AMSOIL Championship Snocross - the Ram Pro National - at Buffalo River Race Park outside Fargo, N.D.
