SUMMER IN THE CITY From the natural wonders in our backyard to a culture exuding around every corner, the RVA region serves the south as the quintessential hub of summer jubilee. But what really makes our City great? In a city as green as Richmond, many would agree our top attractions are found outdoors. Some will tell you it’s all about the James River, host to a myriad of walkways and trails but also activities and events such as Whitewater Rafting on III and IV class rapids, as well as some of the top music festivals in the region. Some might also say it’s the close proximity of The Blue Ridge Mountains or the breathtaking views from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Others think it’s the expanding music and arts scene, with First Fridays every month and live shows nearly every night. We’re also partial to the eclectic food scene you’ll find here. Regardless, there’s a reason so many Richmonders love this city, and if you’re new to town, I encourage you to continue reading and learn more about what a summer in Richmond has to offer you.

RIVER CITY With waters that flow from the Appalachian, down to through the heart of Richmond, the James River offers it all. 348 mile in total to its natural terminus, the Chesapeake Bay, the various parks and trails attached to the James attracts many to its waters year around; boaters and fishermen; hikers and cyclists; conservationists and beer-sluggers, and my personal favorite: rafters. The James River is one of the few places in the world with the chance for urban whitewater trips, including class III-IV rapids running through downtown Richmond. So whether by solo kayaking or banding together with your friends in a raft, boating sports along the James is the cure to the somnolent heat of a southern summer. But don’t just take our word for it. We spoke with Patrick from RVA Paddlesports to better understand not only how to navigate the James’ rocky waters, but the necessary steps before setting foot in the river. Though only in business for about 5 years, Patrick has been in the paddling most of his life. What started as a high-school rafting trip along Oregon’s Deschutes River, turned into a passion that saw Griffin paddle around the world: Zambia and Uganda, Nepal and India, even Norway and the Czech Republic. Near the end of a five month trip along Australian waterways, Griffin returned to Richmond with purpose: to be it’s river guide. Griffin now the founder of RVA Paddlesports, which offers kayak instruction, rafting trips and swiftwater rescue training. And after all those years, he still recommends the James to anyone interested in water sports. “The James is always there, 365 days a year no matter what is going on. We are all so lucky not only for the river itself, but for all the access points and endless trails of the James River Park System that let us discover new parts of the river.”

For newer riders, myself included, starting out can be intimidating. That last thing many of us want to do is make a fool of ourselves on the open water, or worse, injure yourself or someone else. While Patrick admits there is an unwritten code on the water, that isn’t meant to intimidate you.

BEER-A-PALOOZA So many breweries, so little time. If you’ve hosted friends or family new to Richmond, you’ve probably heard this before: “So how about these great breweries we hear so much about?” What used to be something one could accomplish in a day or so now requires a plan of action. Richmond’s brew & bar scene has several hot spots throughout the city and without some forethought, you’ll miss a lot. Don’t take it personal, it’s not easy. That’s why I’m making a four day plan filled with all the spots we can hit, with plenty of time to spare for disc golf or whatever faux sport you put way too much money and effort into. I’m leaving the group lots of choices, and you can always add something if needed. Is it impossible? Maybe. Fun? Absolutely. All that said, make sure your plan includes a way to safely get around. Don’t hesitate to call an Uber or Lyft if you don’t already have a designated driver, because drunk driving will never be ironically cool. Cheers!

THIRSTY THURSDAY

We are kicking things off at Hardywood Park’s food truck court for brews and dinner. The court hosts various food trucks, from tacos to shawarma, giving options for every guest. Right around the corner is Castleburg Brewery that we will hit on the way to the other side of the Fan. Quick stop by Cannon and Draw to try their brews and some aggressive Nintendo 64 gaming, and then up to Cask Cafe to chill for a bit. Its close by PBR (not that kind of PBR) restaurant so we can stop by there and get late night grub and brews. It’s just Thursday, let’s save some steam for the next three days. On the way home we stopped by Strawberry Street Market for some nightcaps to enjoy at home. Hardywood → Castleburg → PBR → Cask Cafe → Cannon & Draw → Strawberry Street

FRIDAY (I’M IN LOVE)

Lunch at Legend Brewery is a must, with a riverside patio that offers striking overlooks to complement your classic OG RVA ales. Next door is Basic City, we can try some of their brews before heading across the river to Shockoe Bottom. See what the group is feeling here, but we have a stop at Shiplock Brewing Co. followed by the Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery tasting room which we can hit on the way to Stone Brewery. The group gets the chance to pick up some swag at Stone Brewery, and we get some beers to-go so we can hit up the disc golf course at Gilles Creek Park across the street. Once we’re tapped out on the disc golf we can go right up the road to the Triple Crossing location in Fulton Hill. There is a chance of getting stuck at Triple Crossing for a bit longer than planned because of their Falcon Smash IPA, but if we are quick we might be able to hit Dorey Park for another round of disc tossin’. On the way out of Fulton Hill we hit up Station 2 Restaurant back in the Bottom for brews and burgers. We’ll probably go through Church Hill hitting up Union Market for some beers and snacks to go on the way to check out Tabol Brewing for the first time. While still going strong on our Friday night we stop by either The Camel, The National, Broadberry or Capital Ale Music Hall for some local live music depending on the band or how we’re feeling. SATURDAY (ARE WE THERE YETI?)

Starting Saturday off right, we fuel up with some brunch. We can hit up Scott’s Addition and pick a spot that works for us all I’m thinking En Su Boca, Boulevard Burger & Brew or Lunch /Supper. Luckily, once finished scarfing down some grub, we are already in the thick of the beer scene that is Scott’s Addition. Let’s start off this leg of the trip at The Veil where we can make a plan on all the spots we want to hit over some IPAs. Vassen Brewery will be a good choice for some sour and strong brews, Three Notch’d for some collaboration beers and more IPAs, Strangeways for a plethora of creative brews and unique sours, Isley for the classics and that oh-so-yummy Choosy Mother Peanut Butter Porter (Try saying that three times fast). Black Heath Meadery can be a stop if we want to mix it up and get into the mead game. We end at Ardent Brewery for some top notch flights and call a ride for our trip up Broad Street to Mekong. Mekong. Duh. That’s the obvious plan for dinner on this beer extravaganza. Post dinner we will go directly next door to the The Answer’s patio where we will savor some of the Andalls and juicy IPA’s. This is the part where we could get stuck, however we need to power on so it’s probably a good idea to grab some to take home. Calling in another ride we head back to Scott’s Addition. At Bingo Beer Company we’re looking to set some high scores and get way into to ping pong over some, you guessed it, more IPAs. With the heat of competition still on our palates, we hop over to Circuit Arcade Bar to settle who is the best at Street Fighter and try out beers from their tap wall. Final stops of the night are Tang Biscuit for some shuffleboard, snacks and brews, then to the Hoffeinmer for a rooftop party till they make us leave. Kidding, don’t be that person.

SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY

With a headache that could crack the moon and never enough time to sleep, we nurse our wounds at Capital Ale House for brunch and beers. This Sunday is no rush, as some will be making the trip home for the dreaded Monday. After brunch we hit up Carytown to visit Garden Grove which is a perfect time to dive into their process of wine and beer. For those that want to check out popular shops for gifts Carytown is perfect with World of Mirth, Plan 9 Records and One Eyed Jacks just to mention a few. On the way out of Carytown we hit up Ellwoods for the last togo beers and healthy snacks. We make our way to Lakeside to hit up Bryan Park for a final round of disc golf. Right down the road from the park is Original Gravity Brewing Company where we can end our big beer weekend with a good spot to chill. DEVIL’S BATHTUB: Featured in the heart of Appalachia, the Devil’s Bathtub has in recent years become more a pilgrimage than a swimming hole. Nested a mile and a half into the Devil’s Fork 7 mile loop, travelers must trek through an old-growth hemlock and rhododendron forest filled with rock formations, intense elevation change, and several stream crossing to reach the sacred sandstone tub. The water travels out from soft sandstone veins running through the fork and reaching the stone luge, fills into a pool of blue-green water. Even in the worst summer heat, the Devil’s Bathtub stays splendidly cold and clear, and has earned the trail international renown for its beauty and year-around elegance - just bring your water shoes and follow the yellow stripes.

LAKE ANNA: Lake Anna isn’t a swimming hole, but it’s not just a lake either. Painting over 13,000 acres of crystal Virginia blue, the lake is massive, one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in state. Bordering the lake is a beach and around 3,000 acres of well-plotted forest that constitutes the state park. The beach is breathtaking and the water is almost always at a cool 63 degrees. The park is also stuffed with activities: fishing ponds accessible to children and the disabled, a bathhouse-concessions complex and even a boat launch. The sheer size of the water is perfect for your kayaks or a pontoon ride for anyone like me who doesn’t want the arm workout.

Overnight stays include campgrounds, cabins, and lodges, with some boasting lakeside views. DAY TRIPPER POCAHONTAS STATE PARK: A good introduction to Virginia outdoors is one close to Richmond and my personal favorite, Pocahontas State Park. The park is located about 20 miles outside the city, in Chesterfield county, and is composed of nearly 8,000 acres of scenic woodlands. Activities offered include hiking along the 64-plus miles of trails, nature and history programs, an Aquatic Center with a toddler pool, fountain wet deck, three-foot and five-foot-deep leisure pools, an activity pool and yes, water slides. The three lakes within the park each offer plenty of spots for fishing, and boat rentals are available seasonally by the 225acre Swift Creek Lake if you don’t already have one (because who buys boats anymore?). Pocahontas’ bike trails, along with the James River Parks Systems trails, were recently given the IMBA bronze level statusadding its more than 25 miles of directional mountain bike trails including traditional single-track and hand-cycle friendly trails, to one of the top mountain biking destinations in the country. So bring your bikes. The park also offers cabins and campsites for overnight guests, as well as two dining halls which may be rented for meetings, weddings and special events. Rustic group facilities with primitive overnight cabins (bunkhouses) are available seasonally for larger groups . The park’s also utilizes its 2,000-seat amphitheater for the Pocahontas Premieres, a series of concerts and family-friendly entertainment.

CROZET: A pleasure of living in Richmond is how easily you can go someplace completely different. Not far from the city are beaches and mountains, small towns, raw nature and grand gardens, early history and the gateways to space. Even if you’re crunched for time or gas money (been there), there a plenty of great spots an hour away. While everyone’s go to for an hour trip is Charlottesville, there’s much more to say about the sleepy town right outside the oversaturated wino town. 75 miles northeast and at a population of barely breaking 6500, Crozet, Virginia is the year-round destination of your dreams. The town sits at the base of the Blue Ridge, hosting a high number of vineyards, orchards, and valley parks. Crozet is also home to Wintergreen, a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders but also open during the summer to families and friend groups, with activities like zip lining, tubing, and local music. WILLIAMSBURG: For our next trip suggestion, head east to Williamsburg, Virginia. For many native Virginians, Colonial Williamsburg is forever stinged in our hearts for its rich smells of tobacco, straw, and realistic horse manure. But beyond the historic grounds, there is a lot more Williamsburg has to offer. Ride your bike on the scenic Colonial Parkway or take a horse to sightsee York River State Park and hike miles of fabulous trails. The waters around Jamestown and York River State Park offer kayaking, canoeing, swimming, and fishing, as well as shark tooth fossil hunting along the York River. THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO CATCH A CAT The James River brings some of the best freshwater fishing on the east coast right here to our backyard. Simply grab a pole, some basic lures or bait and head out to a decent fishing spot. You can catch a number of types of fish including small mouth bass, shad, rockfish, catfish and a number of other species. I’m really here to talk about what I know, and that’s catching some nice big, blue catfish. Right along the James is one of the best places in the world to catch these big blues. I like easy fishing with lines out, bells on the poles sitting by the river and enjoying some music and good times with friends, so let me give you a basic setup idea, as well as a few spots you can enjoy this without too much effort. SETUP: POLE & REEL: Just make sure it can handle something big if needed. Spinning reels are my go to and you can get cheap ones that can handle a large cat at most places. LINE: 20 lb test line should do it though if its lighter your probably fine unless you hook a monster. HOOKS: Get circle hooks from 4-6 gauge, they are basically self setting. If you get a hook with leader (line) already on it you just loop over hook to attach. SWIVELS / SINKER SLIDES: Ball bearing swivels with snap are a must have as they can easily attach your hook and weights. Attach your line before the bearing part, and the weight to the snap. Loop in the hook and leader and your ready to go. Sinker slides are better for live bait, but also work well in a pinch. BELLS: Buy bells for your poles, sit down and enjoy the wait for the bell to ring. There’s nothing like being in mid conversation and hearing that bell. WEIGHTS: For the James River, it’s important you have a good weight. Especially if the tide is up and the current is moving with a purpose. You will really need a decent weight between 4 oz - 7oz KNOTS: Look up the Trilene Knot and Palomar Knot if you need help putting everything together on your line. BAIT: So you can use hotdogs, worms, chicken livers (with pantyhose to hold on), various blood baits and about anything for these hungry fish. But TRUST me for real action get live eel or shad, as they stay on the hook forever and you can portion yourself. 26 26

PRO TIP: Use a pipe cutter to cut pieces of Eel, it may seem like overkill but it works well. And always bring a towel, in all situations. And twizzlers. Never leave the house without them. WHERE TO GO: Let’s keep it simple: check online for incoming tides, prep your stuff beforehand and find a spot to fish a few hours into the tide. Bring some music, chairs, drinks, snacks and a friend. Here are a few quick spots that you can find more about online: ANCARROWS LANDING: The boat launch located in Manchester down from Plant Zero. Fish either side of the launch, and try to hit the middle of the river for deep pockets. DUTCH GAP: Twenty minutes outside the city in Chesterfield you’ll find Dutch Gap which is a good spot for a long night and plenty of privacy. There are plenty of spots after the boat launch to the right, and you can go venture quite for a great spot. RIVERSIDE DRIVE SPOT (UPPER JAMES): After Maymont Bridge take Riverside Drive until you hit Evelyn Byrd Road where you can find parking. There is river access down a hill to the railway tracks where you’ll find paths to the river and a spillway. Fishing the spillway is usually good as the catfish can sometimes get trapped in this area (It’s also a good hang out spot). WALKERTON BRIDGE (MATTAPONI RIVER): A bit of a trip here of about an hour or so, but the bridge has a great fishing pier and has produced well for me quite a few times. You can also fish off the little bridge headed to the pier and that’s a good spot as well. THE BEERS OF SUMMER Here are our personal picks for local beers to have on a nice summer day. All are canned as we don’t want to use any glass outdoors, and so we can be good boys and girls and recycle. These will be good for any outside event, trip, BBQ or camping escape. Most of these can be found in stores or at the brewery itself, and are a great refreshment in even the worst summer heat. With Richmond boasting such a strong craft beer scene it’s easy to leave some good ones out you may enjoy, so this is by no means a “best of” list - just what I’m feeling! I do hope you get to enjoy some of these great Richmond and Virginia brews this summer! HARDYWOOD Capital Trail Pale Ale is a great American Pale Ale with 5.6% ABV and notes of pine and citrus, a perfect complement to a day of long biking and camping plans. Plus any purchase of the beer also supports the VA Capital Trail Foundation, which restores parks and paths across the state. They also have their Suncrush series with different fruity flavors and low Abv for the hot summer days. LEGEND Loving their new Berliner Weiss brew, had a few variants as well at their 25th Anniversary. Great for season with a bit of tart for those sour lovers (me!). Look for them in cans soon. TRIPLE CROSSING Find Falcon Smash and hide it from your greedy friends. This beer, adorned in blue and yellow Captain Falcon insignia, is regularly distributed yet impossible to find. If you don’t know by now, well don’t even worry about it. See if Amazon delivers, I guess?

LICKINGHOLE CREEK CRAFT BREWERY Some of these are special to the city location - from Nine Mile IPA to Redneck High Society, there’s a brew to sensuate anyone’s palate. Look for special can releases, the artwork on them is amazing and definitely Instagram worthy. STONE BREWERY RVA An essential for any camping supply list, Stone Brewery doesn’t just make IPAs - they curate them in the spirit of west-coast style. The classic IPA and its lighter counterpart the Ripper are just two of my favorites. With a distinct flavor and aroma, Stone has brought San Diego here to Richmond and left it on tap. If you’re looking for something even stronger but still cut with some juicy flavor, I recommend the Fear Movie Lions.

THE ANSWER Any IPA on tap, on the fly - their mission is in the title. The brewery offers a myriad of brews, including Tuesday Joose releases. It’s easy to swing by and pick up a 2/4 Growlers to take with you on a trip. HOT NIGHT OUT The sun is setting on the city and it’s time to get sexy. The great thing about Richmond is it’s a place with something for everyone, and if it’s a hot night out on the town you’re after we’ve got you covered. Keep it cool and let us lead this dance. FIRST STOP: Start off by wetting your appetite with a sunset cocktail at the Quirk Hotel rooftop bar. With a South Beach vibe and plenty of personal lounge areas this is sure to set the mood for the night. We suggest starting off with a crisp, clean cocktail such as mojito or ole’ fashioned over an intimate conversation as the sun goes down. SECOND STOP: Take the elevator to the Quirk lobby and stroll over to Bar Solita directly next door. Take your time selecting some small plates to share, and pair, with your extra dirty martinis shaken not stirred. If possible grab a booth to keep eye contact high and the mood relaxed because this night is just warming up. THIRD STOP: Following dinner, take the ten minute walk down Franklin Ave towards Downtown passing by the fountains of Capitol Square Park and landing at the newly renovated Tobacco Company Restaurant. Head towards the back of the where you’ll find the second bar which is usually less crowded and offers a warm ambience. Don’t get to comfortable though because you can feel it coming in the air tonight. FOURTH STOP: With the night breeze beckoning you head over to your second rooftop of the night at Kabana. While there may be a line, it’s worth the patience because what waits ahead is a panorama of the Richmond city lights. Have a drink, have a dance, hell, have a kiss and enjoy music and dancing as your night comes to a close.
