DEAR FRIENDS,

As I reflect on the Institute’s countless successes throughout the past year, I feel deep pride in the tremendous quality and depth the program now holds.

Since its inception, the program scope has widened to encompass a college credit-bearing curriculum, which is continually updated and refined to include the most relevant material. Our reach has also grown significantly; each academic year, the Institute serves more than 500 young women from all 16 counties of our state.

Moreover, we recently built scaffolding to serve alumni long beyond their time in the program. Led by an Alumni Council, established in 2022, graduates have the benefit of online communities, newsletters, and events to aid collaboration with both peers and professionals. We are delighted to see our Olympia’s Leaders (OLs), as participants are called, bringing their post-secondary and post-graduate visions to fruition with lifelong support from the Institute.

My, how it has all come together to achieve precisely what we had hoped! With your help, we have created a continuum of opportunity for rising leaders across Maine.

We are especially grateful for our volunteer Olympia’s Leaders Advisors (OLAs), who lead each cohort of OLs through our core curriculum. By exploring their Values, Voice, and Vision with these trusted adults and their peers, OLs develop communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills while raising their confidence and aspirations. The program and mentorship make an immense difference as they progress through high school; enter college, the workforce, and Maine’s communities; and persist along a path that is meaningful to them.

Last school year, OLs had unparalleled opportunities as Institute offerings expanded. In one exciting new collaboration, we partnered with JMG, formerly Jobs for Maine Graduates, to offer the Maine Career Exploration Badge. By completing an online course and engaging in

40 hours of meaningful work experience through internships, job shadowing, informational interviews, and other professional connections, OLs can explore careers and industries of interest in Maine while still in high school.

Another fantastic benefit we provide is Institute Central, which OLs can access at any time through the Google Classroom platform. This portal contains a wide range of information about scholarships as well as job listings, internships, and mental and physical health resources. This school year, OLs have the option to participate in “Online with OSWLI,” a monthly deep dive into course content that gives them a chance to connect and foster relationships with their peers across the state. We look ahead with anticipation as this series blossoms in 2024!

The Institute also continues to facilitate scholarships for OLs after they have graduated from the program and from high school. We are ecstatic to share that nearly $800,000 in Institute-exclusive or Institutepartnered scholarships have been awarded to OLs in the past five years.

The inaugurated Alumni Council worked to strengthen connections between our 700 — and counting! — program graduates and the wider Institute network, opening avenues for further pursuit and support of leadership goals. The Institute hosted four events for alumni across the state, one of which led to an alum securing an internship at one of our Community Partners! In addition, we established the first Institute Alumni Chapter at the University of Southern Maine in 2023 and look forward to establishing charters at other Maine colleges and universities where significant numbers of alumni are pursuing degrees.

Throughout their lives, OLs will continue to be a part of our extraordinary network. Nowhere was this made more clear than at our dearly loved Fall Forum — which, because of the pandemic, I was able to attend for the first time since 2019. I was thrilled to see a sea of women smiling and feel the group’s energy surging once more. At the end of the day, more than 300 adults completely encircled the massive auditorium to surround

our OLs in a visible demonstration of the support we offer them. I left convinced that this organization is our shared lifetime achievement; no greater gift could exist for young women growing up in Maine.

The Institute culminated this fabulous year with our 9th Annual Leadership Luncheon in December. The phenomenal Darcie McElwee, United States Attorney for the District of Maine, recorded her keynote speech to share with OLs across the state, highlighting her rise from a girl picking potatoes in Aroostook County to becoming the state’s top federal law enforcement official. Her words of wisdom for each OL — to trust their authentic selves, to acknowledge that there is always more to learn, and to lead by listening — offered them a window into the thinking of an exemplary woman leader. In addition, two current OLs and one alum shared their thoughtful remarks on what the program has meant to them. I thank all who participated in this meaningful celebration of our future leaders!

With all that said, I must acknowledge that none of the Institute’s successes would be possible without the exceptional support of our remarkable Community Partners.

Without your commendable generosity keeping this program at no cost to OLs or their schools, the Institute could not have grown to hold such a vast selection of distinctive offerings and valuable benefits for our rising leaders.

THE PROGRAM

Girls’ confidence drops by 20% between the ages of 13 and 18.(1)

THE NEED:

A drop in girls’ confidence often leads to insecurity in math or science, withdrawing from school activities, and avoidance of new experiences or challenges. Studies show that, as early as middle school, girls are 25% less likely than boys to say they enjoy taking the lead.

Having a lack of confidence puts young women at a disadvantage, and the issue can continue into adulthood. The girl who did not raise her hand in class may become a woman who struggles to apply for a job, ask for a promotion or raise, network with new people, communicate effectively with colleagues, lead a team, make decisions, solve problems, innovate in her industry, or found her own company.

THE SOLUTION:

91% of girls believe higher confidence is directly related to mentorship. (1)

Each year at the Institute, roughly 200 women — business and community leaders from across Maine — volunteer as mentors. These OLAs are trained by the Institute and then devote three years to delivering our unique curriculum to more than 500 high school students at 37 Partner Schools spanning all of Maine’s 16 counties.

Cohorts of five OLs meet monthly with two OLAs for experiential activities, thoughtful lessons and debriefs, meaningful conversations, and goal setting. At the start and close of the school year, they also attend regional and statewide events with their peers and many guests from the Institute’s network.

By increasing interactions with successful adults — specifically through mentorship, role modeling, and networking — OLs can observe, emulate, practice, and grow confidence.

The curriculum intentionally explores leadership characteristics, skills, and tasks right as participants are getting settled in high school. Instead of letting them fall

behind, we help them get a step ahead and stand on their own, knowing they have mentors, peers, and the Institute’s entire network as support.

A PROGRESSIVE PROGRAM:

To deliver on its mission, the Institute has:

• Crafted a unique curriculum rooted in the themes “My Values” (10th grade), “My Voice” (11th grade), and “My Vision” (12th grade).

• Accredited its curriculum so OLs can earn digital badges and micro-credentials to apply at Maine and out-of-state colleges.

• Developed individual, paired, small group, and statewide activities to achieve seven key leadership outcomes, measured by regular surveys throughout the program.

• Devised protocols to select participants who have notable leadership potential but lack the confidence to act on it — and who reflect the range of diverse backgrounds within their schools.

• Planned for structured group agreements so individuals can participate authentically, establish deep relationships, feel safe, be brave, suspend judgment, and communicate and collaborate effectively.

• Designed an online platform, as well as regional and statewide events, to create a network of peer support.

• Trained women volunteers to facilitate three years of monthly meetings focused on personal development — who also role model and mentor along the way.

• Welcomed women and men business leaders from across Maine to tell their stories, network with participants, form a community, celebrate accomplishments, and share scholarly and professional opportunities.

ACCREDITATION

The Institute’s program is designed to help OLs acquire and hone the skills needed to be leaders in all aspects of their lives — particularly as they transition into post-secondary education and the workforce.

To provide tangible evidence of skill acquisition, the Institute sought program accreditation. Eastern Maine Community College, the school of record, awards digital badges to OLs who fully participate in the meetings, events, online assignments, and project presentations for each year of the program.

When all three badges — “My Values,” “My Voice,” and “My Vision” — have been earned, OLs receive the “Graduate” badge and a transcript for three college credits, the equivalent of a collegiate Business Leadership course.

OLs can transfer the credits to other Maine-based institutions and out-of-state schools. These credits can have a value of $350 to more than $2,500 depending on the school at which they are applied.

Digital badges are a visual representation of learning that detail acquired skills and can be featured on résumés, LinkedIn, email signatures, and social media profiles. They are easily verified and attractive to employers seeking candidates with specific knowledge, as they certify proficiency in certain skills.

The Institute’s program is vital to bettering Maine’s workforce and communities, because it prepares OLs to better themselves first. As they continue through the three-year program, OLs learn to persist through challenges, develop meaningful skills and goals, and encourage the growth of others. In the future, their leadership will result in personal achievement and will drive employee, organizational, and constituent success across diverse industries. The Institute is proud to prepare OLs to become leaders in the workplace and all areas of their lives.

The curriculum is designed to have OLs make progress toward seven key outcomes related to leadership. According to annual surveys, it is having a measurable and

One of the skills most sought after by employers is the ability for employees to collaborate and work in teams. In today’s interconnected world, that often means working alongside people from a wide variety of backgrounds. While we are all different, the Institute is intentional about how Partner Schools select cohorts. The goal is to have OLs who reflect the diversity of their school and community.

The benefit to this diversity is that it allows for difference in shared experiences, which challenges OLs’ preconceptions and leads to more creative and vibrant exchanges. Having diverse OL cohorts supports the acquisition of skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and thoughtful communication.

The Institute’s Leaders Network is a women’s networking group exclusive to individuals and organizations supporting the Institute financially.

It is comprised of almost 400 Maine women representing a wide range of industries and backgrounds. THE FINANCIAL LANDSCAPE

Despite significant inflationary pressures, the Institute’s finances remain favorable.

As a result of the hard work of an expanding development team and incredibly generous donors, the Institute exceeded its annual goals in all unrestricted operational fundraising areas: individual giving rose more than 24% from the prior year, while corporate and foundation support increased 12% and 3%, respectively. Our Community Partner network expanded with 75 first-time donors, and several multi-year commitments were made to help sustain the financial health of the organization into the future.

Additional development and program resources were allocated to support the ongoing growth of the organization and its continuously expanding donor and alumni networks. The Institute invested in infrastructure to enhance efficiency and broaden program offerings. A significant improvement was deploying a Student Information System to replace the manual entry of thousands of data points per year with automated processes.

Even with the impact of rising costs and new expenditures, the Institute’s team successfully met all financial objectives for the year.

The Marr-Anderson Family Foundation’s mission is to promote education, health, and offer compassionate support during times of crisis. The family has partnered with the Institute to reach high school seniors with goals of obtaining post-secondary education yet for whom financial barriers would prevent them from realizing this dream.

THE COLLEGE CLUB OF PORTLAND SCHOLARSHIP

When the College Club of Portland closed its operations, its leadership team selected local nonprofits with which to leave its remaining funds. The Institute was selected as a beneficiary, creating a one-time scholarship to make college more accessible for one young woman in the greater Portland area who demonstrated higher confidence, aspirations, and leadership skills during their time with the Institute.
