Soar Valley Life Just Great Music!
You don’t know what you’ve got ‘ l it’s... I guess you can fill in the last word yourself? Of course it’s from that famous song by Canadian singer/song writer Joni Mitchell— Big Yellow Taxi—like the one here that took us to the airport on our way home from a beau ful family wedding on Vancouver Island. Normal life for Mary and I was suspended upon our arrival by car back in Sileby from Heathrow at 5pm on Sunday 19th August. We pulled up on the grass in front of our house in order to unload the cases. As soon as we’d done that, I went to open the back door to let in some fresh air and realised that our home had been broken into. The only evidence, at first, appeared to be the broken lock, but as soon as we went upstairs the extent of our predicament began to unfold. The contents of bedroom drawers were strewn over the floor; in Mary’s office there was sta onery and papers on the carpet and in my study the cupboard door was open with items of li le worth on the floor. We phoned 999, gave an account of what we had discovered and, within an hour, two police S.O.C.O. arrived and began dus ng for prints upstairs and downstairs. Our Ford van key was not in the fruit bowl in the kitchen where we’d le it, so I went round to look in our car park no van. Over the next hour and a half we discovered many items of sen mental, emo onal and material value had been stolen. There was a mounted gold sovereign on a long gold belcher chain. The actual sovereign had been a 21st birthday present to
Mary’s mum from her grandfather; there were rings and necklaces handed down from Mary’s aunts. There was a jewellery case I had bought for my late wife in the 1990s containing all sorts of keepsakes from that life: wedding rings, a lock of hair, a golden heart necklace, etc. Going out on foot for a pint and a takeaway a er the police had le , it dawned on Mary that the spare Kia car key had been in her mother’s jewellery case which was also missing, so we decided it would be a good idea to move the car elsewhere. On the way home, I went to the Chinese takeaway and Mary went to the chippy. Mary got back before me and went to look in the car park to make sure the car was okay. She walked round to the house and was unlocking the front door when she no ced a male person loping past wearing a black hoodie pulled well forward over his face. She went into the kitchen and was pu ng plates out for our meal as I got back. ‘The car’s okay, I just checked,’ she said. I picked up the car keys saying I would move it before we ate. But, unbelievably, when I went round to the car park, it had gone! I rang the police straightaway and they quickly located it in Loughborough and gave chase. A er hi ng a lamp post the
occupant fled. He was caught and spent 24 hours in police custody. The case is s ll under inves ga on. We have since learned, on the grapevine, who this person is: a nasty piece of work , a local thief and convicted criminal. There was a box and a half of Soar Valley Life magazines in the van which must have been dumped somewhere. Please let us know if you spot them—the ones with the cricketers on the front. As each day has unfolded we have found more and more items that aren’t with us anymore. Strange how you don’t no ce something is missing un l you want it… We have been overwhelmed by a great many offers of help and support . People have sent us flowers, lent us their cars and offered all kinds of prac cal help with our business. And all this in our Autumn magazine deadline week! So we sincerely apologise for this being a thinner magazine this me, but it has been one of the most tes ng weeks we have ever known. We’ll be back to some sort of normality for the next issue and hopefully we’ll have put an end to the growing list of our possessions that are well, here it is then, that missing word—GONE!

VAT CHANGES – 1 OCTOBER 2019 Reverse charge for construc on services From 1 October 2019 the Domes c Reverse Charge comes into effect and is a major change as to how VAT is collected in the construc on industry. If the type of work you are undertaking is a specified service within the scope of CIS and your customer is registered for both CIS and VAT but is not the “end user” then the domes c reverse charge will apply to you. A subcontractor will need to obtain confirma on from their customers if they are the end user or an intermediary supplier and if the reverse charge will apply. A contractor will need to review their contracts with sub contractors and decide if the reverse charge will apply. If the service you are supplying is zerorated or you are not VAT registered then the reverse charge will not apply to you. This new VAT change has not had as much publicity as Making Tax Digital so it is likely to come as a surprise to a lot of CIS workers, don’t get caught out on 1 October 2019!! Caroline Dinsmore

Nicky Morgan MP This is a me of year when students will have received their exam results and moved on to the next stage of their lives – perhaps to the next part of their educa on or to an appren ceship or a graduate role. I want to wish everyone in that posi on well, and also to salute the support and hard work given by teachers, families and others. Every year I a end one of the gradua on ceremonies at Loughborough University and they usually start with the graduates being invited to applaud those who’ve supported them. Life as Loughborough’s MP is always varied – from unveiling a new parcel postbox, asking ques ons about Loughborough business, Intelligent Energy in the House of Commons or raising a cons tuency case with the Prime Minister, to raising awareness about pensioner benefits. Un l recently I was Chair of the AllParty Parliamentary Group on Heritage Rail. We recently published a report on what the disappearance of coal would do to the sector. There is a great deal of focus, quite rightly, on how the UK can get to a net zero carbon figure by 2050. But the end of fossil fuels such as coal, while welcome in many ways and providing an opportunity for development of and investment in renewable energy, also has implica ons. As we know from the fabulous Great Central Railway in Leicestershire people visit heritage railways to see steam and, for now, they need coal to produce it. Our new report (available on www.nickymorgan.com) looks at this and discusses what can be done to tackle the issue now. Much to my surprise the new Prime Minister offered me a role in his Cabinet as the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports. This is an extremely interes ng and diverse role and touches on issues of real importance to our lives – the role that technology has in driving economic growth, the dangers and opportuni es of the online world and how it could be regulated, the importance of art, culture, music, theatre, sport and so much else in enriching our lives, the development of youth policy outside schools and how we tackle loneliness.

Seborrhoeic Keratosis These domed or platelike growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells...
Extensive seborrhoeic keratosis
A er removal using advanced electrolysis
Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several cen metres across and some mes they can become sore or itchy.
Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with makeup is rarely successful. At one me they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare
as these benign growths are considered only to be a cosme c issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves li le or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and so .

Pelvic Girdle Pain PGP, formerly known as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunc on affects 1 in 5 pregnant women and symptoms can occur at any stage during or following pregnancy. PGP causes pain and s ffness in the pelvic joints, and difficulty walking, climbing stairs and turning in bed. The shape and flexibility of the pelvis/pelvic joints changes in pregnancy due to the weight of the developing baby and hormones released during pregnancy which increase laxity of the pelvic ligaments. Osteopathic treatment of the pelvic joints and so ssues is safe and effec ve during and a er pregnancy. Osteopaths can advise pregnant women on strengthening exercises for the pelvic floor as well as gentle treatment to alleviate back and pelvic pain experienced throughout pregnancy. The Difference between Eczema and Psoriasis Eczema is a kind of derma s; causes are unknown but associated with environmental factors triggering flareups. It’s red, itchy, flaky, looks like extremely dry skin, and can have lesions that ooze and bleed. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder which causes cells to behave abnormally. Plaque psoriasis is the most common form, called such because of the thick, white patches that develop. Nails may become ‘pi ed’ o en confused with fungal nails. Typically occurs in adults. Eczema usually results from things that irritate your skin, like soaps, disinfectants or some foods. Psoriasis shares some of these triggers, also stress and infec on if your skin is injured: sunburn, scratches. Treatment: In mild cases treated with a steroid cream, in more severe cases drugs like methotrexate. Psoriasis o en combines this with light therapy. Self help: Use a cream specially forma ed to help these condi ons without steroids such as Laufwunder Sensi ve Balm containing pure micro granules of silver (naturally an microbial) and no urea, colours or perfumes.
Tracing Your Family History Workhouses Amongst places listed in trade directories are local workhouses. Parishes were made to provide for their poor since the 1600s but an 1834 Act of Parliament required them to combine into groups to run Union workhouses. Parishes contributed towards the construction of the building, then to running costs depending on how many of their parishioners were inmates. Later, workhouses were instructed to add an infirmary and these were often the only source of medical care for ordinary folk, with some becoming early NHS hospitals. The National Trust’s workhouse at Southwell, Notts recently opened its infirmary to visitors after a 5 year restoration scheme. Surviving workhouse registers are usually kept in county archives and are subject to the 100 year rule. There may be gaps in records or you may even find a photo of an inmate. Learn more at www.workhouses.org.uk The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church hall, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start. Is it me for a new (school) year resolu on? “Back to school” means so many different things. Your child may be star ng a new school, moving up a year, entering the first or second year of GCSE’s or Alevels, or perhaps even facing retakes if this summer’s exams didn’t quite go to plan. How will they approach these challenges? If they lack confidence, a program of individual tui on could make a world of difference to their academic a ainment, and they will reap the benefits of a newfound “growth mindset” for years to come. Our tutors love to work onetoone with individual students, and to see them develop to their full poten al, so why not take a posi ve step and pick up the phone for a chat to see how we can help? We are a local company, employing local tutors to help children at Key Stage 2 and 3, GCSE, AS and A level, to be the best they can be at Maths, English, Sciences, Languages any subject. SEN inquiries welcomed. Great tutors always required. Call us on 01509 767007 to arrange your free consulta on. www.tutordoctor.co.uk/loughborough

Pets By Ann Haldo Just Great Music!
Eyes Eye health issues are generally easier to spot, as redness or soreness becomes fairly obvious. Your cat may rub their eyes to relieve itchiness, or squint to avoid the light and ease soreness.
Health Check Your Cat Although your cat needs a check up with the vet once a year, you can also carry out your own health check at home. Here are some of the main areas to keep an eye on so your feline friend stays as healthy as possible through the year. Skin and coat Check for any lesions or scaling as this could indicate a skin condi on or infesta on of fleas/mites. Their coat should be shiny and glossy with no bald patches or dandruff – cats typically shed in autumn as well as spring me, so it’s a good idea to groom them regularly.
Page 46
Ears Although you shouldn’t examine too far inside your cat’s ears, you can look for any dirt, redness, or other signs that they might be infected. If your cat shakes its head or holds it to one side, they could have an ear problem and your vet will be able to examine them more closely.
Mouth Good dental hygiene is important for cat health and you may already brush your cat’s teeth regularly. If you no ce they have bad breath or red/swollen gums, or are saliva ng more than normal, it’s advisable to take them to the vet as they could have tooth decay, gum disease or a diges ve problem. www.purina.co.uk/cats/ healthandnutri on/ groominganddaily care/generalcathealth ps

The Independent Traveller Just Great Music!
What are my op ons for some winter sun? Seems strange to be wri ng this on the ho est ever day in the UK. However, we know that all too soon we will be reaching for warmer clothes. The simple answer to finding winter holiday heat is in the Southern Hemisphere or as close to the equator as possible. However you need to sort out in your mind how hot do you want it to be? Southern Europe will be warm but not hot. If you want real heat then you have to travel further. For shorter breaks or long term stays (46 weeks) southern Spain has a lot of a rac on although you can s ll get some colder snaps. Tenerife and Madeira have always been popular with Brits as they do offer nice accommoda on and also numerous op ons for ac vi es. Cape Verde became very popular for a while and is a great op on if you only want to be in the sun; although there are other ac vi es such as walking or golf for instance. Malta is also good with lots to do in terms of sightseeing but again you can get the odd short colder spell. The long haul des na ons that we see as being popular during our winter are Australia, New
Zealand and South Africa plus of course the Caribbean. Longer flight mes but the sun is virtually guaranteed! South Africa has a lot of advantages: • No jet lag • The pound is s ll quite strong against the South African rand. • Fantas c accommoda on at a fair price. • World class safari. • Full range op ons, fly drives, train journeys or escorted tours. • Very warm welcome. Now is the me to pop in to our new offices in the Ca le Market near the Town Hall in Loughborough. We have a full range of brochures and experienced staff to help you decide based on your needs and budget.

Astronomy Just Great Music!
In 1978, I (Steve) joined the No ngham Astronomical Society—the NAS I became a commi ee member the following year and we began fundraising for the proposed new observatory which was to be built on land leased to the society from Severn Trent Water, which was one of the darkest sky sights in the East Midlands, on the No s/Leics border near Owthorpe, off the A 46. But then life intervened, I got married, had two children, moved away from the area to work and my membership lapsed. I have retained my interest in Astronomy, and especially since 2014, with
The 24 inch Newtonian telescope of the No ngham Astronomical Society which is available for members to use
Page 52
this page in Soar Valley Life. Meanwhile, as they say, life went on and in 2001 the Society obtained a grant from the Heritage Lo ery Fund ‘Awards for All’ scheme. Added to dona ons from Society members past and present, the Awards for All grant enabled them to order the large telescope from Beacon Hill Telescopes. It was installed in the dome in the summer of 2004. The following year, members constructed a raised floor in the dome. On 13 May 2006, sixty years a er the Society was founded, the Observatory was declared open by Prof. Michael Merrifield of the University of No ngham. The ceremony was a ended by present and past members of the Society and guests. Thanks to the construc on and maintenance work carried out by the Society’s members and friends over more than three decades, they now have an opera onal observatory. Out of the blue, on a Friday a ernoon in early July, I had a phone call whilst I was in my garden from the secretary of the society, who lives in East Leake and receives Soar Valley Life, asking if I would be interested in having the NAS as sponsors to the Soar Valley Life Astronomy page. “Absolutely!” was my response. I shall be renewing my ac ve interest in Astronomy forthwith and will a end their monthly mee ngs, held on the first Tuesday of every month, except August, in the Gotham Memorial Hall just off the northern end of
The Observatory of The No ngham Astronomical Society at Owthorpe just off the A46 on the No s and Leics border
our area. So, this month’s astronomy page is very different, but if you go to our website and follow the link to the NAS you will find a more comprehensive set of sky notes and astronomy informa on. You can of course go direct to the Society’s website: www.no nghamastro.org.uk Our new look, enhanced and improved Astronomy Sec on will be launched with our next issue, in the mean me... Short Story By Jackie Brewster Just Great Music!
A Nasty Case of the Whiffs “What a nasty pong!” Lisa said, winding up her window. “They must be muckspreading these fields.” Gareth had no ced the smell a few miles back, but had chosen to say nothing. Diane, Lisa’s sister, had picked them up from the airport. He was red a er a long flight, and uncomfortably squashed in the back of Diane’s coupé with Lisa’s pink suitcase on the seat next to him. He strongly suspected that the smell was coming from inside it. “Wind your window down again, babes,” Diane said. “It’s not coming from outside.” Lisa hurriedly wound her window down and gasped the fresh air. “I can’t smell anything,” Gareth lied. “Perhaps your air con filters need cleaning, Diane?” “I had the car serviced last week. I’m pulling over,” Diane said, indica ng. “It’s like something died in here, I can taste it.” “It’s like someone boiled old socks in milk,” Lisa added. Gareth groaned as Diane pulled into the layby, and Lisa pped her seat forward so that he could climb out. He looked at the suitcase ruefully. It was just a ma er of me before his guilty secret would be exposed. He stood on the grass verge with his hands buried deep in his pockets while Diane sniffed inside the car thoroughly. Straightening up, she slammed the car door and announced, “It’s Lisa’s suitcase.” Lisa’s mouth dropped open. “I put all my dirty clothes in a plas c bag.” She blushed crossly. “I don’t have anything smelly.”
Page 56
“The suitcase has to come out,” Diane said, folding her arms. “It absolutely s nks, and I’m not driving another second with that in my car; I will never get the smell out of the upholstery.” “We’re not just leaving it here,” Lisa protested, “all my holiday gear’s in it.” Gareth rubbed his eyes wearily. “Alright,” he said, “I think I know what’s making the smell.” “What?” Lisa snapped. “Have you put something in my suitcase?” “No.” Gareth sighed. “If I tell you, promise you won’t get angry?” Diane snorted. “We’ll see,” Lisa said, rolling up her sleeves. Gareth took a deep breath and pulled out the offending suitcase. “Yuck!” Diane shrieked. “Don’t get it near me.” “I just want to say that my heart was in the right place,” Gareth said, unzipping the case. “You know that bo le of designer perfume I gave you last night?” “What about it?” Lisa asked suspiciously. “Well, a bloke outside the resort was selling them for a frac on of the price,” Gareth said. “I figured it was a fake, but,” he swallowed, “I didn’t think you’d no ce the difference.”
Diane and Lisa gasped in unison. “The bo le must have leaked,” Gareth finished, then added unnecessarily, “Obviously they didn’t get the smell quite right.” “Quite right?” Lisa said. “It smells like the barnyard of death.” “I always said you were a cheapskate, Gareth,” Diane mu ered spitefully. “Just get the bo le out,” Lisa said sternly. “I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed.” She was angry, Gareth decided. Holding his nose he gingerly opened the lid of the case. “What’s that?” Lisa peered at the contents. “That isn’t my beach towel.” “You’re right,” Gareth agreed in surprise, li ing up the faded towel, “it isn’t.” As he did, something large and white slid out and fell onto the grass. “Good grief.” Diane stepped back in terror. “That s nks, what is it?” Gareth kicked it with his toe. “It’s a wheel of very ripe Camembert,” he decided. The he looked up at Lisa. “You’ve picked up the wrong suitcase from the airport carousel.” “Who’s got my case then?” Lisa wailed. “Someone who really likes cheese?” Gareth offered, unhelpfully.
