Peter and Beverley kneel as Dean David Monteith blesses them during their marriage service at Leicester Cathedral on 11th May
Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue What an amazing day May 11th 2019 was! Peter, our Opera ons Manager, married his long me friend and colleague Beverley at Leicester Cathedral and The Very Revd David Monteith, Dean of Leicester led the Service. The Cathedral was packed and by the start of the proceedings at 2.00pm there was standing room only. Mary and I had arrived early and found a good vantage point to watch the happy event. The atmosphere bristled with an cipa on as the organist played Te Deum Prelude and Beverley entered the Cathedral with her two page boys and three bridesmaids. The congrega on hushed as the service began. There were hymns by Charles Wesley, George Herbert and others, music from Johann Sebas an Bach with spectacular singing from the Leicester Cathedral Choir, readings from James Salt and Marian Davies and prayers from the Revd Clive Wa s. The homily was given by the Bishop of Loughborough and a erwards there was Prosecco and cake for all served in the Cathedral. Invited guests then re red to St Mar n’s House for the Wedding Feast. I said to Mary a erwards, “I’ve never been to such an amazing wedding! There were two bishops, a Dean, and I bet more than a dozen reverends!” The food was splendid and we sat on a table with Beverley’s friends from Yorkshire, who were lovely people. The speeches were given, the feast consumed and the guests le with hugs, handshakes and a few happy tears. A handful of hardy stragglers had a pint in a private room in Wygston’s House including Mary & I, Bride & Groom and the Bridesmaids before we caught our Kinchbus home. Now, that’s what I call a celebra on!

arch or an arbour can divide your garden into one or more rooms, a trick that makes your garden seem larger and more interes ng. Chosen carefully, arches and arbours are good looking and a feature in their own right, and if you clothe them with climbers you are adding to their appeal. Plus, those climbers with the added ingredient of scent, like some of the rambling or climbing roses, or honeysuckle or jasmine, can totally transform the whole garden with their wa ing perfume.
The area around an arbour in a sunny spot with fairly free draining soil can be planted with lavenders, so you can enjoy both the way it looks and the perfume and aroma c leaves a er a stressful day. Did you know that Soar Valley Life magazine has been voted as the Page 19 Best Community News publica on in Leicestershire for 2018 by SME News magazine?
Nicky Morgan MP I suspect many Soar Valley Life readers and their families will sadly have been affected by cancer. There are many excellent chari es offering support to those facing a devasta ng diagnosis. Research is also very important and that’s why events such as the Cancer Research UK Race for Life are so cri cal. I was honoured to hand out the medals at the finishing line at the Loughborough Race for Life in early June.

Many families contact me about the educa on and support needs for their children who have special educa onal needs. We have the fantas c Ashmount School in Loughborough but it is clear that more specialist provision to deal with a wider variety of needs will be necessary in the future. So, I’m delighted that Leicestershire County Council is proposing to expand its SEND provision across the county, including at Hind Leys in Shepshed. The Department for Educa on also recently announced it would fund the building of a further 50place special free school for pupils with Social Emo onal and Mental Health needs on the Iveshead campus in Shepshed. The Treasury Select Commi ee in the House of Commons, which I chair, recently published a detailed report on the access to financial services by vulnerable consumers. Financial inclusion is a key goal in ensuring everyone is able to manage their money and feel in control of their lives and I was really pleased to be able to highlight the issues and barriers faced by vulnerable customers. I recently heard more about the Leicestershire and Rutland Blood Bikes. This dedicated group of volunteers provide a free, “out of hours” courier service to public health bodies in Leicestershire & Rutland. They are not an emergency service but work with the hospitals to fulfil their transport needs in a mely manner. Ge ng to the des na on safely is very important. The group also provides support to the local Air Ambulance, delivering blood for use on the aircra . If you need a speaker for an event or if you’d like to raise funds to support their work then find out more at www.lrbloodbikes.org.uk

Sweet Recipe Just Great Music!
Crème Caramels
Makes 6 Ready in 1 hour 10 minutes, plus overnight chilling
Just a few cheap ingredients are needed to make this classic French dessert. Served with fresh fruit it’s an impressive finale to a special meal.
1
To make the caramel, place the granulated sugar in a medium heavybased pan with 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, s rring, un l the sugar has dissolved in the water to form a clear syrup. Increase the heat and bring the syrup to the boil, without s rring, un l it turns a deep golden caramel colour. Swirl the pan occasionally to prevent hotspots forming and the caramel burning.
2
Remove the pan from the heat and carefully pour the hot caramel into six individual ovenproof dishes (see TIP). Place the dishes in a roas ng n. Preheat the oven to 140C/fan 170C/gas mark 3.
3
Whisk the eggs, yolks and caster sugar together in a large heatproof bowl. Pour the milk into a clean pan and bring to simmering point, then whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture. S r in the vanilla extract then strain the mixture into a large jug and divide between the dishes.
4
5
Tip
Pour enough boiling water into the roas ng n to come halfway up the sides of the dishes. Bake for 1822 minutes un l just set. Remove from the oven and leave to cool, then remove from the n, cover and chill for 4 hours or overnight. To serve, run the p of a knife round the edge of the set custard. Invert each one on to a small plate. Serve decorated with orange slices, grapes and raspberries.
Ingredients: • 150g granulated sugar • 4 medium eggs, plus 2 medium egg yolks • 100g caster sugar • 600ml whole milk • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Orange slices, grapes and raspberries, to serve

Inheritance Tax Just Great Music!
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has reported a new record high for Inheritance Tax receipts in the 2017/18 tax year, with around £5.2 billion being received. This is an increase of £400 million (approximately 8%) compared to 2016/17. The increase in Inheritance Tax receipts is despite the introduc on of the ‘Residence Nil Rate Band’ (RNRB) which was introduced in April 2017. This relief is only available if you leave your main residence to your direct descendants. Furthermore, the property must be your main residence either at the date of your death or at some point during your life me.
The RNRB relief is worth up to £150,000 for individuals and up to £300,000 for spouses/civil partners for tax year 2019/20. This allowance is in addi on to the Nil Rate Band which is currently £325,000 for each individual and up to £650,000 for spouses/civil partners. Therefore, there is the poten al for a couple to pass on £950,000 in the current tax year without incurring an Inheritance Tax charge. The last 8 years have seen steady increases in Inheritance Tax receipts, mainly as a result of rapidly rising property prices, and insufficient tax planning prior to death. Many estates have also failed to claim the RNRB relief, and HMRC will only apply it
automa cally if they have enough detail on the Inheritance Tax returns to know that it applies. You should ensure that your Will is up to date to ensure the availability of the RNRB relief. Should you wish to review your Will please contact Moss Solicitors on 01509 217770 for advice. Furthermore, if you have not had a professional assessment of the poten al Inheritance Tax liability arising on your death and considered methods of mi ga on then we recommend that you contact Anna Sidat on 01509 635467 at Woodgate Financial Planning for a free review of your financial posi on.

The Time of Your Life “Ge ng older a privilege denied to many,” so the saying goes…
We're a community – residents and carers united by our shared joy for life
And at Cedar House Care Home on Sta on Road, Rothley, a privilege it certainly is. I recently visited the care home which is situated on the corner of the road to Thurcaston, just 300 yards from Rothley Great Central Railway Sta on. A more idyllic spot to spend the Autumn of one’s life I could not imagine; the sound of steam trains in the near distance every weekend, and on many weekdays in the summer, taking the mind back to olden days when life was, perhaps, simpler. At Cedar House life is made simple and easy under the cedar boughs for those who live there, with every need catered for. But this doesn’t mean an inac ve life at all; here you can be as ac ve and joyfully engaged as you want to be and with me for peace and quiet when you need. It’s a wonderful place for families to meet up and then spend a splendid day out in our wonderful Soar Valley, with dozens of things to see and do.

We think people deserve to be as inspired in old age as they were in their youth Everyday life at Cedar House feels like living at home, but with friends around to help, all in a caring and comfortable community. Even though the ra o of staff to residents is high, you’ll never feel overwhelmed or stuck in an inflexible regime. At all mes you are made to feel wanted, cared for and treated as an individual with all the choices you would want to have as if at home. Everyday there are different ac vi es to get involved with if you want to: if you take a look on their website www.cedarcare.cc you will see how many things there are laid on for you. I counted more than 50 different categories of ac vi es in the photo gallery from boat trips to pet handling. There are visits from local nursery schools where residents help the infants with all sorts of amazing stuff, especially the recent raising of chickens from eggs to hatchlings and then caring for them un l they’re ready for their lives on the freerange local farm. Of course, food and dining are a most important part of life here. There are different dining rooms, making
it easy to find the right company and likeminded friends with whom to enjoy your meal mes and a erwards three different si ng rooms to relax in. The menus are varied and relevant, and all residents are consulted regularly on what they like to eat. Food is cooked on site each day in their own kitchens using local fruit, veg, meat and bread brought in fresh. Birthday cakes are made by their very own chef, or bought from Rothley’s popular delicatessen, North’s, which is almost next door. From me to me as a special treat, cake and biscuits, cooked by their own residents, are enjoyed. This li le ar cle can hardly do jus ce to what’s on offer at Cedar House Residen al care home a care home without the nursing so I’ll end by extending an offer that’s made on their web site: “Come and have a cup of tea and a chat with us, we’ll all make you feel very welcome!” Call Lisa, Karen or Kate on 0116 230 3066.

Astronomy Just Great Music!
Einstein’s Predic on in NASA’s CubeSat General Rela vity Theory Launch Proven 100 years ago On May 29th 1919, astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington verified Einstein’s Predic on in his general theory of rela vity by observing the apparent deflec on of stars from their normal posi ons during a solar eclipse. This happens because, according to Einstein’s theory, the path of light is bent by gravity when it travels close to a massive object like our sun. Later that year – on November 6, 1919, in London – England’s Astronomer Royal, Frank Dyson, presented the results at a joint mee ng of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Society. Dyson said, “There can be no doubt that measurements made during the May 29th 1919 solar eclipse “confirm Einstein’s predic on.” And so Albert Einstein was catapulted to rock star fame, to a status in popular culture he has retained ever since.

Special Events Calendar for July and August 2019 July: Moon, Mercury & Mars—on the 4th at 9.45pm low in the twilight in the Northwest, you’ll see the thinnest crescent Moon with the two planets just below it. 9th Saturn is at its brightest and closest to Earth, but is s ll 10 mes fainter than brilliant Jupiter which is close by and they form a triangle with the red supergiant star Antares on the 13th. 16th The Moon displays a par al lunar eclipse as she rises at 9pm already partly obscured, with maximum eclipse occurring at 10.35pm with 65% of the Moon in shadow. August: 12/13th Perseids meteor shower maximum; all but the brightest will be washed out by the light from the nearly full Moon. 23/24 watch the waning crescent Moon, which rises at 1am, occult (pass in front of) several of the stars in the Hyades cluster. Watch this through binoculars to get the best effect. For me (Steve) this was one of the first and most inspiring sights I have s ll ever experienced from my own back garden. It really brings the stars and the moon alive as you see the mo on of the Moon switch off each star one by one!

Disposals to family members – beware of the ‘market value’ rule The calcula on of a capital gain or loss on the disposal of an asset is rela vely straigh orward – simply the difference between the sum received for the sale of that asset and the cost of acquiring (including associated costs etc). However, as with all rules there are excep ons, and par cular care needs to be taken when disposing of an asset to other family members. Transfers of assets between spouses and civil partners are deemed to be that which gives rise to neither a gain nor a loss. The effect of this rule, which is very useful for tax planning purposes, is that the transferee simply assumes the transferors base cost – and the transferor has no capital gain to worry about. Where two persons are connected (i.e. sibling, child, parent), the actual sum paid, if any, is ignored and instead the market value of the asset at the me of the transfer is used to work out any capital gain or loss. This may give rise to an unexpected tax liability so it is always wise to check with a tax adviser before such a transac on takes place. Caroline Dinsmore – Principle CP Accountancy

Children's brains are designed to forget! It's been known since the 1880's that forge ng starts as soon as learning happens. Pets By Ann Haldo Just Great Music!
Healthy Summer Rabbits Although rabbits are generally viewed as lowerprofile pets when compared with cats and dogs, they have specific needs and require lots of care and a en on to make sure they thrive. With this in mind, the heat of summer introduces the risk of your rabbit suffering two par cularly nasty and poten ally fatal diseases. Fly strike Fly strike is a serious condi on that affects rabbits in the warmer months. Flies lay their eggs close to your rabbit’s back end, and within a couple of hours the eggs hatch into maggots that feed on the rabbit.
Page 44
The sheer speed of fly strike means you need to be alert, and check twice a day that your rabbit is clean. It’s also advisable to disinfect the hutch at least weekly, and not to overfeed them. If your rabbit lives outside, you can also protect them from fly strike to some extent by fixing mosquito ne ng around their hutch. Myxomatosis Myxomatosis is usually fatal for rabbits, and is caused by fly, flea, ck, or mosquito bites. It can also be carried between rabbits on infected bedding and straw. Myxomatosis is a highly infec ous virus that causes the mucous membranes around the eyes to swell, but there is a vaccine that typically lasts for 12 months.
The vaccine doesn’t remove the risk of this awful disease en rely, but if your vaccinated rabbit is infected by the virus it can increase its chances of survival if treatment is also administered as an emergency. www.vet4life.co.uk/flystrike www.kingsteigntonvetgroup.co.uk /blog/summerrisksto rabbits.shtml

Leg Ulcers Leg ulcers are breaks in the skin allowing air and bacteria to get to the underlying ssues. • Venous disease is the main reason for over two thirds of all leg ulcers. • The reduced flow of blood back to the heart is commonly due to valve and calf or foot muscle pump incompetence • Affects around 1 in 50 over the age of 80 Most ulcers caused by artery disease or diabetes occur on the foot rather than the leg. They can be really painful but some mes no pain – especially in diabe cs where neuropathy hides the pain. There is NO self help – seek immediate help from your Podiatrist or GP who will have specialist nurses able to provide a range of treatments. Most venous ulcers can heal in 3 to 4 months when treated with compression therapy.

The Cat & Wickets Pub Company Just Great Music!
The Company was founded in 2016 by cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney, alongside awardwinning licensee Dan Cramp of the Larwood & Voce Pub and Kitchen situated at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground. They have set themselves the challenge of rejuvena ng historical pubs in our local communi es. Following the success of their first country Inn, The Three Crowns at Wymeswold in August 2016, they opened the Tap and Run in Upper Broughton (formerly the Golden Fleece) in September 2018 a er a substan al £350k renova on.
Harry Gurney at Trent Bridge
As you might expect, Dan takes care of opera ons; Harry, who is an economics graduate as well as a first class cricketer, looks a er the books while Stuart provides ideas as well as the marke ng reach and PR that an interna onal sportsman can bring. Stuart explains the team dynamic: "My view on it is that Dan's the expert. He has been in the trade for a long me. For me he has the biggest vote. Harry is the money man and I pick at everything and play devil's advocate." Dan laughs: "The only me we fall out is when those two get behind the bar and try to pull a pint – you should see the wastage!" For those who don't know their cricket, Stuart is one of England's most successful bowlers. Only James Anderson has more test wickets. Like Stuart, Harry began his professional career with Leicestershire and is now in his eighth season playing for No nghamshire. Harry also has 12 England caps to his name and now plays T20 cricket all over the world, including Australia’s Big Bash and the IPL (Indian Premier League). While Harry and Stuart are unlikely to bring your meal to your
table they have input in all areas. It's interes ng to watch the two bowlers and Dan discuss the value of doing two courses for £15.50 or worry about being perceived as expensive (typical bowlers). They see The Three Crowns as their smaller more in mate pub: homemade sausage rolls on the bar, sport on the TV, a menu of pub classics, with tradi onal and cra beers, wines and spirits. The Tap and Run on the other hand they see as more of a country gastro pub with a large car park and more extensive menu. They have recently launched a new lunch me and earlybird set menu at the Tap and Run, with two courses for £15.50 and three for £18.50 which they hope will drive midweek trade. Harry concludes: “We hope to welcome you to one of our pubs soon and if you see one of us in there please don’t hesitate to say hello, we don’t bite I promise!” See page 50 for more details. The Independent Traveller Just Great Music!
For a change I am wri ng this from Rwanda! So, ‘Why are you in Rwanda?’ might be a reasonable ques on. When we started the company over 40 plus years ago, which most of you know as The Independent Traveller, we actually mainly ran trips for farmers. While today most of our bookings are with the general public, we do s ll work with farming groups. One group that we work with is World Jersey Ca le Bureau (WJCB). This group are Jersey cow farmers from around the world that meet once a year to visit a par cular country. This year we have organized their trip to Rwanda. But that is only part of the story: In a longterm project in Rwanda, the Jersey cow is making a real difference in raising people out of poverty. This aid is corrup on free which is great and it also involves some research work which will bring medium term aid to other areas of Africa. As part of this event we have set up a mee ng for 150 people to look at these programmes in Rwanda to see how they can impact on the rest of East Africa. The quali es of the Jersey breed have been much prized by dairy farmers all over the world and the Jersey cow can now be found grazing fields in over 100 countries. The adaptability of the Jersey to a variety of different
environments ensures that the breed will thrive in climates where another dairy breed might struggle. As I return, we will be leaving our current offices, where we have been for the last 22 years, and moving on the 8th July to what was the old Stuart Westmoreland premises in the Ca le Market. We
feel this office will be er serve the changing face of retail in Loughborough. In September we will be having some special events to mark this move so look out in next edi on for full details including some great special offers. Come and see us, the coffee pot is always on!

Trade Directories While listing a county’s cities, towns and villages, usually alphabetically, they generally include places of worship, schools and often describe major industries - even sometimes their productivity, e.g. amount of coal cut p.a. Early directories say when the mail coaches arrived, and later recording the growth of railways. Local carriers, usually running between inn yards and specific villages, may be found even in the 20th century. Most trades, with their practitioners, are listed alphabetically, generally followed by a street directory, showing residents’ names. As people paid for inclusion, some showed their social standing by being listed – but not everyone could afford it, so don’t be disappointed if you can’t find your ancestor. Remember, people may have moved house more than once between censuses, so checking more streets may be necessary. Even if you don’t find what you were seeking, you could find another useful nugget of information instead! The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.

A UKFirst as Kinchbus Leads with Contactless
Our Soar Valley bus company, Kinchbus, is rolling out the UK’s first truly tapon tapoff contactless payment for their region’s bus travel. Kinchbus is inves ng in the tapon tapoff terminals a er trialling the system with pioneering UK provider Ticketer on the Skylink Derby route’s 11 vehicles. During the twomonth trial, one in five customers opted to pay with their contactless debit or credit cards. Customer research by Kinchbus found that 80 per cent of customers have a contactless card. With more than 3.2 million customer journeys each year, a similar 20 per cent take up across the Kinchbus network’s 37 buses would see an average of more than 1,750 contactless payments made each day. Kinchbus managing director Jeff Counsell said: “One in five is a huge number annually, but we only expect contactless to increase its share of payments over me. “This is especially true for our system which, uniquely for a UK bus company, automa cally charges the lowest possible fare given where customers get on and the stop they get off at. This beats the flat charge levied by other operators. “With daily and 28day caps too, our customers will have confidence that they are ge ng the best possible value for money every me they tap on and off a Kinchbus service.” Kinchbus services will see contactless rolled out across its fleet this summer. Using the GPS tracking on board each bus, the
system was developed by Berkshirebased technology firm Ticketer with the help of Kinchbus. John Clarfelt, managing director of Ticketer, said: “We are delighted that the trial of our tap on tapoff terminals, working together with Li lepay, was such a huge success for Kinchbus. “Our cket machines are the first in the UK to guarantee passengers pay for their actual journey rather than a prepurchased cket; they are so easy to use, passengers simply tap on with their contactless credit or debit card, then tap off as they disembark. “They no longer need to state their des na on or cket type to the driver. We are so pleased that yet another of our innova ons is making it easier for everyone to travel by bus.” Jeff Counsell said: “For decades we’ve been at the forefront of developing innova on in bus travel, including the vehicles, the allround experience, the real me informa on, a rac ve branding and outstanding levels of service by friendly drivers. “By adding contactless in this more sophis cated and customer “I'd rather go by bus.” – Prince Charles
centric way, whilst s ll accep ng other methods of payment, we are crea ng more choice. It is innova ons such as this which will encourage more people to choose bus travel.” Customers who travel contactless will be able to see their journey history, trip charges and how close they are to their day and 28 day cap through the Kinchbus websites. Kinchbus was founded in 1987 by former Leicester City Football Club director Gilbert Kinch trading as GK Kinch and based in Barrow Upon Soar. In the early 1990s Kinchbus began to expand with services around Leicestershire and No nghamshire. In 1998 Kinchbus was sold to the Wellglade Group; the Kinchbus name was retained and Loughborough con nued as the base for its opera ons. Kinchbus now operates 7 services across Derbyshire, Leicestershire and No nghamshire, including the 24hour Skylink service which connects East Midlands Airport to Derby, Loughborough and Leicester. See the Kinchbus advert on the back page.

Short Story By Jackie Brewster Just Great Music!
Penny Falls “We’ve got another one, Sandra,” Debbie called to her colleague in the kiosk at the beach amusement arcade. “Another what?” Sandra looked up from sor ng a tray of keyrings, and raised her eyebrows. “Oh, another one of them.” Both women watched as a man in flipflops and a long raincoat wove carefully between the penny falls machines towards them. He was flushed and grun ng, clearly straining with the heavy load he was concealing beneath his coat. As he reached them, with one final effort the man opened his coat and heaved his burden onto the kiosk counter. “Can you help me with this?” he said, gasping for breath. “I didn’t want anyone else to see it.” “Of course, we can ducky, you’ve come to the right place,” Debbie said, inspec ng his precious belonging with a cri cal eye. “How long have you had it on the go?” “Nearly eighteen months,” he said proudly. “Credit where credit’s due,” Debbie said, “I don’t think I’ve seen one as big as this.” “I’ve had to carry it all the way from the car park,” he said, glad to have finally met someone who understood. “It kept slipping out of my hands.” “You can’t be too careful with a big one like that,” Debbie said. “It’d make an awful mess on the beach. Am I right in thinking that now you’ve got it stuck?” “I’ve tried pping it upside down and shaking it,” he said, “but nothing shi s it.” Debbie gingerly turned it around to look at it in a be er light. “I

can’t see any obvious obstruc ons,” she said. “Can you, Sandra?” “No, but some mes they’re sneaky,” Sandra said, pu ng on her spectacles. “Do you remember that one that had a Fox’s Glacier Mint in it?” Debbie nodded. “Rock solid it was, and virtually invisible.” She looked up at the man. “Do you have any kids or pets?” “No,” he said, finally ge ng his breath back, “it’s just me on my own.” “That’s promising then,” Debbie said, “I always advise folks to never leave these things una ended.” Sandra nodded empha cally with her arms folded across her chest. “We found a glass eye in one once,” she said. “Queer one that.” She peered down the top of the object. “Especially as the eye was bigger than the hole.” She looked back up at the man. “How do you figure that out?” “I honestly can’t,” the man said nervously. “I don’t suppose you’d be happy to just tap a small hole in it?” Debbie said. “We’ve got a toffee hammer knocking about.”
“I’d rather not if you don’t mind,” he said sheepishly. “It has sen mental value.” “In that case there’s only one thing to do,” Debbie said decisively. “Sandra, we need your special pokey s ck, the big bucket and a squirt of washingup liquid.” “Washingup liquid?” the man asked in alarm. “It’s just a bit of lubrica on, ducky,” Debbie said and pa ed his arm. “Works a charm, trust me.” Sandra was already brandishing a longhandled wooden spoon. “Is there anything I can do to help?” the man asked anxiously. “When the me comes, I’m going to ask you to turn it upside down and shake it vigorously,” Debbie said with authority. “Do you think you can do that for me?” “I can try,” the man said, rolling up his coat sleeves. “Let’s do it.” “We’ll get every twopence piece out of this whisky bo le, ducky, just you wait and see,” Debbie said as Sandra handed her the bo le of washingup liquid. “You’ll be shovelling them into the penny falls before you know it.”
