The idea that education – lifelong learning – is for everybody is important to us.

ay “arts education,” and adults are likely to think of it as a kids-only concern. Center Theatre Group is out to cast a wider net, beyond age limits and classroom walls. “We are growing the ways that people of all ages can better connect with CTG, deepen their theatre-going experience and explore their own creativity and ideas,” said Leslie Johnson, director of Center Theatre Group’s Education and Community Partnerships department. “The idea that education – lifelong learning – is for everybody is important to us.” As Johnson and her department have worked to establish ways to expand and deepen the reach of education at CTG, however, defining what “Community Partnerships” could mean in relation to this large arts institution, and shaping programs around that definition, has been “a bit of a struggle.”
“You can contact a college for an intern, you can contact the school district to find out what schools to partner with,” Johnson said. “With ‘community,’ where do 8 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

you begin? What does that mean, how does that work, what should programming look like? And how can you foster a sense of community if there’s no place to commune? Place is important.” As it turned out, CTG didn’t need to look any farther than its own neighborhood for a community that had not previously been on its radar: the historically arts-rich and primarily Latino community of Boyle Heights, located just east of downtown – where CTG has its 9,945 square-foot costume and prop shop. When a colleague suggested that the shop could double as a community hub, something clicked, Johnson said. Behind the walls of this warehouse facility in a Boyle Heights industrial area are the tools of the theatrical production trade, and an eye-popping trove of fabrics, trims and accessories, paints, building materials, and some 50 years worth of costumes, props and set pieces. With a seed grant from the “A-ha! Program: Think It, Do It,” funded by the MetLife Foundation and administered by Theatre Communications Group, The Shop launched in 2013 as a major pilot initiative. “It was an exciting way to connect with a community that is so close geographically to Center Theatre Group, but terribly underrepresented in our audience demographic,” Johnson said. The opportunity to collaborate with CTG’s production team to demonstrate the skills, craft and care “that go into what you see on stage” was another plus. Facilitated by CTG Program Manager Jesus Reyes, a long-time Boyle Heights resident and Creative Artistic Director of East LA Rep, The Shop concept began with one question: “What does it mean to be a good neighbor?” “If I moved into your neighborhood,” Johnson said, “what might you do, what might I do? You might come over to my house and welcome me with some oranges from your backyard. I might have an open house and say, ‘why don’t you come over’”? With that neighborly perspective, and with the help of theatre artist and community liaison Estela Garcia, The Shop’s initial pilot phase began at four Boyle Heights libraries with several weeks of bilingual and Spanish-only play readings produced by CTG and three smaller local theatre companies: East LA Rep, Casa 1010 and Off the Tracks Theater Company. Librarians set out books related to the plays and their themes and growing audience interest sparked increasingly lively post-show discussions. Conversation-starting costume displays from CTG productions (Parade, The Cherry Orchard, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and Zoot Suit) reflected Jewish, Russian, African American and Latino communities with historic ties to Boyle Heights. CTG teaching artists led costume design workshops and staff collected emails and addresses from the participants, distributed flyers about The Shop at schools and farmers’ markets, attended Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council
meetings “and we literally walked and papered two housing projects across the street,” Johnson said. “We even bought a Penny Saver ad,” Reyes noted. When The Shop opened its doors to the public at a March kick-off event, more than 100 people toured the facility and participated in art-making activities – felt flower making, paper masks, hats and bow-tie making, puppet making and stenciling. Following the March event, creative workshops were held in maskmaking, fabric dyeing, furniture painting and upholstery, acting and creative writing. “I met a cabinet maker, construction workers, people who sew, people doing these things that are so directly related to theatre,” Garcia said, “but that they would never have realized were alike.” Children took part, but adults were the primary focus, because the crux of the program is that creativity is for everyone. “A lot of parents are willing to sacrifice for their children,” Garcia said, “but they don’t give themselves some time to learn something new, or to just spend an afternoon being creative.” Reaching those people “was a challenge for us,” she said, “but once they came, it was the most rewarding part.” During a fabric painting workshop, Garcia recalled, one woman said that it transported her to her childhood. “She said it wasn’t ‘because as a child I got to paint, but because I didn’t.’” Other new ventures that further redefine what education means at CTG are a pilot expansion of post-show discussions at the Ahmanson, and The Grid, a recently launched online informational resource designed for CTG patrons and donors, teachers and community members at large to “enrich the theatre-going experience,” said Johnson. “To make it more than just ‘I bought a ticket and sat in the audience,’” she said. “We wanted to give folks more insight into all things CTG: more information about our shows and about our programs that aren’t on our stages, more information about our impact in the community, whether we’re sending something to Broadway, or we’re doing a writers' workshop.” A separate “Educator Hub” offers resources for teachers. (Eventually, Johnson said, The Grid and CTG’s main website will become one.) PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 9

In 2008, in the wake of shrinking arts programming in Southern California schools, the role of CTG’s Education department was given a substantial makeover, led by arts and education programming expert Johnson, who had just recently come on board. It was at that time, to underscore the renewal and expansion of CTG’s educational and outreach mission, that the department added Community Partnerships to its name. Since then, “education” has become an institution-wide conversation and it is ongoing, as is the revitalization of CTG’s signature theatre arts programming for primary and secondary students, its training of teaching artists, and enrichment and networking opportunities for drama teachers and young emerging artists. Stand-alone programs at CTG, including the Direct Access Theatre Experience (Project D.A.T.E.) services for visually impaired and deaf or hard-of-hearing patrons and the Richard E. Sherwood Award, a $10,000 grant offered to early career artists, are now under the Education and Partnership umbrella. Among other programs that are carrying CTG’s education banner: “Front and Center,” a partnership with other arts organizations that supports the Culver City Unified School District in providing comprehensive theatre education; and the August Wilson Monologue Competition and August Wilson In-School Residency Program that expose teens to the late playwright’s work and spark their own creative efforts, while sustaining Wilson’s legacy and his close association with CTG. Johnson has also overseen the establishment of new educational parameters for CTG’s Internship Program for university and college students or recent graduates. “This is our vehicle to develop the arts leaders of the next era,” she said. Eligibility is not based on age, but on experience. “You don’t have to be a 19-year-old to need an internship,” said Program Manager Camille Schenkkan. “By expanding the places where we do outreach, by ensuring that the internships are paid and keep to set hours a week – we are really strict about that – we hope to increase the kinds of students and diversity of students who are able to consider careers in theatre.” The Shop is now a full-fledged CTG program. Up next, in addition to a continuation of the library partnerships in Boyle Heights, it will include two participatory arts engagement projects for adults and families, funded by a $600,000 grant from the Irvine Foundation: The iconic El Teatro Campesino will bring its Mayan creation myth-inspired Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven project to The Shop as a Boyle Heights-based version of the theatrical pageant that the company presents in Central California. Participants will make masks, costumes and large-scale puppets and the project culminates in a performance by community and ETC members at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles. Among the artists-in-residence at The Shop: ETC’s Producing Artistic

“ This is our vehicle to develop the arts leaders of the next era...” Director, Kinan Valdez (son of Luis Valdez, whose play Zoot Suit had its ground-breaking premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in 1978). The Irvine grant will also extend CTG’s new vision for community outreach by funding Through the Looking Glass for residents of Leimert Park and Montebello, created and facilitated by performance artist Jerry Quickley. It will have participants from each community meet separately to explore cultural stereotypes and write “autobiographies” of their counterparts in the other community workshop. When the groups meet, “We’re going to have them reimagine, restate and redraft their views of the other as we work on closing the gap between what’s imagined, what’s real, what messages social groups send and how they are received,” said Quickley, who initially created Through the Looking Glass with students at Stanford and incarcerated youth. “At the end of the day, it’s an effort to find out more about ourselves by exploring the others around us.” The program will culminate in staged readings of a theatre piece performed by the community members and created by Quickley from the participants’ work. Making a meaningful commitment to reach out to the diverse communities that lie within CTG’s area of service – while at the same time furthering the institution’s long-established and growing educational mission – is “huge,” Johnson said. “But we’re a big organization,” she said, “and we can do more than one thing. I think we have a responsibility to do both.” ○

T
o kick off the school year, over 150 donors, board members, government leaders, school district leaders, principals, teachers and Center Theatre Group youth program alumni gathered on September 27 at the stunning home of CTG Board member Norris Bishton and Education Committee member Debra Bishton. Guests enjoyed the gorgeous views of Los Angeles while connecting with fellow arts education practitioners and supporters. The program began with a warm welcome from Norris Bishton, who let his guests in on a little secret: They were consuming wine that had been made from grapes grown on the Bishtons’ property. Guests then heard powerful testimonies from past program participants of the Young Audiences Program, CTG Student Ambassadors, CTG Student Body and the August Wilson In-School Residency Program. To top the evening off, 2014 August Wilson Monologue Competition national finalist Mykaela Sterris treated everyone to a moving performance of her winning monologue from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. ○

A Tale of Conviction The Blue Ribbon Helps Bring Rebecca Gilman’s Luna Gale to the Stage
W
ith an Evening Standard Award, a Harper Lee Award and a Pulitzer Prize nomination, Rebecca Gilman is one of the most celebrated playwrights working in the American theatre today. Thanks in part to The Blue Ribbon (see sidebar on page 18), Los Angeles audiences can now see the world-premiere production of Gilman’s latest work at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Called Luna Gale, this unforgettable tale of conviction and passion showcases the playwright’s bold, courageous voice.
INSPIRATION KNOCKS Creativity can spark in the oddest places. In the case of Luna Gale, Gilman’s inspiration traces to a minor hiking injury and her subsequent visit to the emergency room, where she encountered a young, meth-addicted couple. “The woman was talking on her cell phone in what sounded like a drug deal,” Gilman says. “Then she got a call — I think it might have been her mother — and suddenly she was giving instructions about her children. Her demeanor changed; she seemed competent and together. I looked at her and thought, ‘Is it possible you’re a good mother? Despite the fact you’re a meth addict and your boyfriend is completely passed out next to you?’” The unexpected contradictions in the young woman’s behavior helped crystallize a play Gilman had been thinking about for 10 years. TACKLING DIFFICULT ISSUES No stranger to controversial topics, Gilman has explored class, political correctness, sexism and racial identity in her work. With Luna Gale, she examines the plight of a child born to drug-addicted parents and caught in a dysfunctional social services system. continues on page 18
Center Theatre Group is profoundly grateful to The Blue Ribbon for its generous support of Luna Gale at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Luna Gale premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, where its director, Robert Falls, also serves as artistic director. 16 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

THE BLUE RIBBON CELEBRATES LUNA GALE You might remember first visiting The Music Center as a guest of The Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival, an annual admission-free program specifically designed for fifth-graders. Chances are you were greeted by members of The Blue Ribbon, dressed in their red, white and blue pinafores, welcoming young minds to experience the exuberance of the performing arts. Since 1970, The Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival has served more than 800,000 children in Los Angeles County. Members of The Blue Ribbon dedicate their time and resources to the event’s planning, funding and staffing.
continued from page 16
“Rebecca uses strong social situations as backgrounds, and then she transcends them,” director Robert Falls says of his fourth collaboration with Gilman. “I think she’s among the best, if not the best writer to be in a room with because she’s practical and extremely unsentimental. She knows exactly what she wants.” Caroline, the play’s protagonist, is a veteran social worker determined to save baby Luna Gale. But what seems like a “typical” case is shadowed by hidden motives, long-held secrets and moral ambiguity. “Not everyone gets an equal opportunity from birth,” Gilman says. “Whenever I see people whose lives have been shut down early because they simply weren’t given the basic tools to succeed, I think that’s kind of criminal. … You can really judge how well a society functions by how its most vulnerable members are treated. If we can’t take care of our children, we are failing. We’re not doing our job.” ○

But that’s not all The Blue Ribbon does for Los Angeles' downtown performing arts center. Since its founding in 1968, this women’s membership group has raised more than $72 million to support The Music Center and its resident companies. In November and December, they lend their support to Center Theatre Group’s presentation of the Goodman Theatre’s world premiere production of Luna Gale — just one more example of their commitment to bringing exciting theatre, music, opera and dance to the L.A. community. ○

rowing up in New York, Misty Widelitz began her love affair with the theatre at an early age. She fondly remembers being in school plays and studying acting at New York University before meeting her late husband, Milton. They met on Thanksgiving, which remains Misty’s favorite holiday — a wonderful time to celebrate with family, give thanks and help others, Misty said. After moving to Los Angeles with their three young sons, Misty continued to fulfill her love for the stage as an audience member and by getting involved with many organizations that support arts education. When Center Theatre Group announced its plans for Blithe Spirit starring Angela Lansbury at the Ahmanson Theatre, Misty did not hesitate to align her Artistic Director’s Circle support with the production. She had recently met the actress at Career Transition for Dancers’ annual gala, which honored Lansbury for her contributions to the arts. Misty admires Lansbury’s lifelong passion for theatre, a passion she shares and hopes to commemorate through her support of Blithe Spirit. She also wanted to play a small part in bringing Lansbury’s captivating performance as Madame Arcati to Los Angeles. Had she continued a career in the theatre, Misty imagines she’d be an acting teacher. Arts education, she says, benefits children and families

in many ways, and that’s why she donates to organizations like Center Theatre Group. The hardest thing in her life was losing her beloved husband of 62 years, Milton. However, she reminds herself to stay positive and finds strength through the many lifelong friends she has met through The Blue Ribbon, the Children’s Burn Foundation and Center Theatre Group. Misty counts her blessings every day that she is in the position to help others, and hopes that her gift can inspire everyone to give a little. In addition to enjoying theatre performances, Misty loves traveling the world, seeing her grandchildren and walking her darling pooch, Camelot. ○

Know Your KDT Season Donors Gather for Inaugural Event
Donors listen to highlights of the 2015 Douglas Season.
I
n honor of the Kirk Douglas Theatre’s 10th birthday this year, Center Theatre Group launched a brand-new donor event called Know Your KDT Season. Inspired by our popular Season Preview — in which Artistic Director Michael Ritchie shares how a CTG season comes together — this new annual tradition focused on the eclectic mix of work at CTG’s Culver City venue.
including the upcoming productions of Chavez Ravine (January 27-March 1, 2015) and Girlfriend (July 12-August 9, 2015). DouglasPlus offerings include a work in progress (Throw Me on the Burnpile and Light Me Up in May 2015) and a CTG commission performed in an unconventional space (How to Be a Rock Critic in June 2015).
Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez and Literary Manager Joy Meads began by asking donors to name the Douglas productions they found particularly memorable. With works like Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (2008), Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (2009) and The Nether (2013) on donors' minds, the discussion ultimately celebrated the Kirk Douglas Theatre’s identity as L.A.’s home for innovative, thought-provoking and adventurous theatre.
In May 2015, CTG will also partner with 24th Street Theatre to present Walking the Tightrope, a sweet and funny story about a grandfather who, while trying to tell his five-year-old granddaughter that Grandma is gone, builds a beautiful new relationship with her.
Rodriguez and Meads also discussed how nontraditional models of creating new work are reshaping American theatre, including what audiences will see at the Douglas this year. CTG’s Artistic Development Program contributes to these efforts by commissioning not just traditional playwrights but also ensembles and artists who devise their work through improvisation and experimentation. Audience and community members often participate in this process by attending readings and workshops. The pair then previewed the diverse selection of plays and musicals by local and national playwrights appearing at the Kirk Douglas Theatre this season,
The event ended with a lively question-and-answer session about what donors have appreciated at the Kirk Douglas Theatre over the years, and how we can strive for more diverse and daring theatre in future seasons. ○
Contributions from theatre-lovers like you enable the organization to delight, educate and inspire diverse audiences through the power of theatre. In appreciation of their support, CTG brings its donors closer to the magic onstage through events like this. To learn more, contact Donor Relations at 213.972.7564, or email DonorRelations@CenterTheatreGroup.org.

Noël Coward
The Impossibility of Love I
t all began with the actress Joyce Carey. On May 2, 1941, she took a train for Portmeirion in North Wales. She’d had one of her plays, Sweet Aloes, produced in the West End and was now working on another based on Keats and Fanny Brawne. As a travelling companion, she took her great friend Noël Coward. When they returned to London six days later, Joyce was still wrestling with Fanny Brawne. Coward had the completed manuscript of Blithe Spirit. “For some time past an idea for a light comedy had been rattling at the door of my mind,” said Coward, “and I thought the time had come to let it in and show it a little courtesy…. Beyond a few typographical errors, I made no corrections, and only two lines of the original script were ultimately cut.” The play opened only a month later on June 16 in Manchester, and then at London’s Piccadilly Theatre on July 2. It ran for 1997 performances, outlasting World War II (a West End record until The Mousetrap overtook it). Some early critics were skeptical of the subject matter. How could audiences be expected to find death amusing in the middle of a war? Yet, clearly they did. The Daily Mail summed it up as “fantastic fun” and, paraphrasing Shelley, concluded:
Hail to thee, Blithe Spirit, Bird thou’ll never get.
And it never has, even though it’s one of the most revived of his plays. Coward gave the play the subtitle “An Improbable Comedy” but Harold Pinter sensed a deeper meaning, common to many of Coward’s major plays. When he directed a revival of Blithe Spirit at The National Theatre in 1976, Pinter insisted to his cast at the start of rehearsals that he considered the play to be neither improbable nor a
comedy. He had already realized from a study of Private Lives that “a character could stand on a stage and say one thing and the audience would know he actually meant something else!” Pinter would elaborate on that insight in his own work ever after. Comedy was always Coward’s way of making a serious point. “I am light-minded. I would inevitably write a comedy if – God help me! – I wanted to write a play with a message.” Perhaps it was his deliberate intention to appear trivial, never to wear his heart anywhere near his sleeve. What he might have said was that he realized that comedy and tragedy are essentially two sides of the same coin. With the 20-20 clarity of hindsight, however, it becomes clear that beneath the brittle carapace of witty words, much of his work had as its unifying theme the tragic impossibility of love. In Private Lives, Elyot and Amanda cannot live with each other or without each other. In their struggle, which will go on after they steal away and the play ends, they leave the debris of everyone who comes near them, and will go on doing so, for this is not an ending but an intermission. They are unconscious killers. The same thing happens in Design For Living for Gilda, Otto and Leo. The secondary characters who cross their paths are irrelevant to their selfish needs and casually discarded as they work out the variations in their romance-à-trois. Others must clean up the emotional mess. In Fallen Angels, Julia and Jane have settled for predictably boring marriage until the prospect of a visit from the Gallic lover they had once shared suggests the possibility of an old flame rekindling the odd ember. In Blithe Spirit, Charles Condomine is, for the purposes of the play, a bigamist. As played by Cecil Parker in the original production, he is a conventional middle-aged man, comfortable, if not ecstatic, in his second marriage to Ruth. Then the shade of his first wife, Elvira, returns,

If Love were all, I should be lonely –Bitter Sweet
reminding him of the lows and also a few of the highs of what once was. But Blithe Spirit is only incidentally about ghosts and the hereafter. It’s really about marital discord in the present continuing for all time. The impossibility of love, doubled. Coward’s expressed view of love and marriage was consistent from very early on. It may end in tragedy as in The Astonished Heart or Bitter Sweet, or in futility, as in Easy Virtue. At its most romantic, love is something that nearly but never was and now never will be, as in Brief Encounter. Never was and therefore able to endure as romance unsoiled in the minds of Laura and Alec. In the minds of the audience too, which is presumably why The Guardian recently placed Brief Encounter at the top of its poll for the most romantic film of all time. Casablanca and Gone With The Wind were second and third respectively. Over the years and through his plays, poems and songs, Coward conducted a constant debate about love through his characters. “Tell me, tell me, tell me, what is Love?” asks the young Sari in Bitter Sweet. “Is it some consuming flame / Part of the Moon, part of the Sun / Part of a dream barely begun?” Later in the same 1929 play, Manon, the café chanteuse, expresses what has come to be seen as Coward’s considered conclusion:
I think if only Somebody splendid really needed me, Someone affectionate and dear, Cares would be ended if I knew that he Wanted to have me near. But I believe that since my life began The most I’ve had is just A talent to amuse. Heigh, ho, if love were all.
A later verse captures a more realistic, if more disappointing, realization. I am no good at Love. My heart should be wild and free I kill the unfortunate golden goose, Whoever it may be, With over-articulate tenderness And too much intensity. I am no good at Love. I betray it with little sins, For I feel the misery of the end In the moment that it begins And the bitterness of the last good-bye Is the bitterness that wins. In Blithe Spirit, Charles Condomine lives to love again. But what are his chances? Does anyone in a Coward play live happily ever after? In a late life television interview, Coward is asked to sum up his life in one word. “Well, now comes the terrible decision as to whether to be corny or not. The answer is one word. Love. To know that you are among people you love and who love you. That has made all the successes wonderful – much more wonderful than they’d have been anyway. And that’s it, really.” So perhaps the answer is not romantic love, but loving. ○ Barry Day Editor of The Letters of Noël Coward

Winter 2014 This time of year provides many ways to reflect on who we are and what we have accomplished during the past year. It is a time in which we celebrate the New Year and wish each other health and happiness. We spend these months celebrating our faith, our families and our friends. It is also a time to think of others and about giving to organizations that we know do great work in our community. The list of charitable organizations seems to get longer each year. Our challenge, as we each think about giving, is to help as many people in our community as we can and for National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles to make those donations go as far as possible. As you make your choices on where to give, please consider giving to the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates that strive for social justice through the direct services we provide. We are a determined group of women and men who continue to serve our community as long as there is need. NCJW/LA serves over 15,000 individuals each year along with providing thousands of free clothing for those in-need and at-risk. We continue to fill in gaps of service for Los Angeles through our Women Helping Women Community Counseling & Support Services and Women Helping Children Art & Literacy Programs for Youth. You can give through our website www.ncjwla.org or through donations of goods to our Council Thrift Shops. This year Council Thrift Shops celebrate 90 years of service to the Los Angeles community. Very few people like to ask for donations, but if we do not ask we will not receive the donations needed to support the many programs and services NCJW/LA provides in our community. It takes just a little bit from everyone to help a lot of people. If each of you reading this gives a few dollars or donates goods to Council Thrift Shops, you will know that you are helping your neighbor, a friend or someone in your community. What better way to celebrate the holidays this year. Wishing you and your families a healthy and peaceful holiday season.

ACCENTURE JOINS THE MUSIC CENTER IN A 50TH ANNIVERSARY SALUTE TO THE SPIRIT OF VOLUNTEERISM

Sada Juma, Accenture VSO beneficiary and member of the crab farming Kisasasaka Women's Group, Tanzania, with proof of her success.
The Music Center is pleased to spotlight Accenture, one of the world’s leading management consulting and technology services companies, and a Music Center corporate partner. Active in 56 countries, Accenture has offices and operations in more than 200 cities around the world, including here in Southern California. Accenture has worked with 16 of the 25 largest public companies in Los Angeles and two-thirds of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the Southland. As a statement of its commitment to the Los Angeles community, this fall Accenture partnered with The Music Center to sponsor a special 50th Anniversary Volunteer Appreciation event saluting the numerous volunteers of both The Music Center and its resident companies. This tribute, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, followed a Civic Rededication ceremony for The Music Center, also supported by Accenture. In celebrating its 50th Anniversary, The Music Center acknowledged Dorothy Buffum Chandler’s entrepreneurialism and extraordinary drive, which inspired many in the community to support her dream of a permanent home for the performing arts in Los Angeles. Thanks to the many volunteers and donors who embraced Mrs. Chandler’s goal, The Music Center was built, and
MCDEV_1214.indd 4
history was made. Today, the spirit of volunteerism is pervasive at The Music Center, from the Symphonians who guide visitors through its four venues, to the donors who support arts education and special programming. Accenture has a long history of giving back to the community through volunteering. Through its corporate citizenship initiative, Skills to Succeed, Accenture aims to equip more than 700,000 people around the world with workplace or entrepreneurial skills by 2015. One example of this commitment in action is the company’s work with Voluntary Services Overseas. This program makes it possible for Accenture employees to take a leave of absence to volunteer their time and professional skills to help local communities in the developing world. Accenture employees in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and many more locations have applied their business skills to make tangible contributions in challenging environments. In turn, they acquire new skills and find their experience both personally and professionally rewarding. Here in Los Angeles, Accenture also supports local arts and culture, recognizing their positive role in both economic development and societal enrichment. In addition to its partnership with The Music Center, Accenture has teamed with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on LACMA’s new Art +Technology Lab, a cutting-edge technology exhibit space that promotes innovation and collaboration across disciplines and industries. The company also partners with the California Science Center, Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens, and KCET Public Television on a range of programs designed to enhance the community. According to Accenture’s Southern California Managing Director Trey Thornton, “It was our pleasure to be a part of The Music Center’s 50th Anniversary and to recognize the many volunteers who are key to sustaining it as a premier arts destination. Much like those who support The Music Center, the energy and expertise of Accenture’s team members enhances our community volunteerism," he added. The Music Center honors Accenture for its visionary leadership in creating initiatives that make a meaningful and sustainable difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities across the Southland and around the world and is grateful for Accenture’s support.
