rindell Roberts Gottlieb, one of Center Theatre Group’s most generous donors, hosted a fabulous “starry” night at her home, The Milton. This evening was a thankyou to significant individual donors to CTG whose support is recognized through the Artistic Director’s Circle and the Artists & Educators Forum, as well as to major corporate and foundation funders. Gottlieb transformed her home into the streets of New York for the featured performers, Joe Iconis and Family. Iconis is an up-and-coming Broadway lyricist and composer, and thanks to Gottlieb’s generous support, CTG presented the world premiere of his latest musical, The Black Suits, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre last month. The evening also generated more than $800,000 in major giving to CTG over the next five years.

When this CTG Board member isn’t in the courtroom, she’s courtside with her husband, Rodger — the managing partner of Landau, Gottfried & Berger LLP — watching their kids play sports. As the Corporate Circle’s chair, she works behind the scenes to form new partnerships for CTG, and will lead its 44 members toward raising nearly $500,000 this year for youth arts exploration and emerging playwrights.
Your favorite CTG experience? A magical moment sharing War Horse and CTG’s Young Audiences Program with my children. What CTG education program do you wish you could have experienced as a young adult? The August Wilson Program. The opportunity to stand on the Taper stage and speak the words of one of the country’s best playwrights — simply phenomenal. What’s your must-see show this season? Harmony. Because who doesn’t love Barry Manilow? What is your idea of the perfect play? Anything that consists of rich dialogue, that makes me think, and that taps into the human condition. And if I’m moved to tears, all the better. What show would you love to see at CTG? Wit at the Mark Taper Forum.

Landau Makes the Case for Arts Education What playwright would you trust to write your life story? Who would you cast as yourself? Wendy Wasserstein would have been perfect because she understood the dynamic of Jewish households. And I would cast Idina Menzel because her voice is extraordinary. What character from a play is most in need of legal advice? Sweeney Todd. Why does Sidley Austin support theatre in Los Angeles? Theatre is a critical part of the culture of Los Angeles. I’ve loved theatre since I was a child, and I am proud that Sidley supports my involvement with CTG. With approximately 1,700 lawyers in 19 offices worldwide, Sidley Austin LLP has built a reputation as a premier legal adviser for global businesses and financial institutions. For the third consecutive year, Sidley received the most first-tier national rankings of any U.S. law firm in the 2013 U.S. News — Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” survey. ®

Miranda Wright Receives 2014 Sherwood Award photo by ryan miller/capture imaging.
SHERWOOD AWARD
Center Theatre Group | Education & Community Partnerships
Honoring Innovation M
eet Miranda Wright, a Los Angeles-based theatre producer and this year’s Sherwood Award winner. As executive director of Los Angeles Performance Practice, a producing organization and artists’ network comprised of independent artists and companies, Wright has contributed to groundbreaking theatre through new approaches to collaboration, technology and social engagement.
Production values “I’ve been ‘producing’ since I was a small child,” Wright says. “I would gather the neighborhood kids together to watch Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre on VHS and then organize everyone into roles for replicated performances on the community lawn.” With the support of the Sherwood Award, Wright looks forward to projects that embrace this same collaborative spirit. “My favorite part of what I do is actually talking with artists about their ideas, and helping them think through ways to bring those ideas into reality,” she says. “The artists I work with never stop surprising me.”
Fusing genres, uniting audiences One of Wright’s proudest career moments was producing Deborah Asiimwe’s Cooking Oil with director Emily Mendelsohn. The piece explored women’s access to education in Africa, aid distribution, and the role of the arts in social change, all while challenging the traditional
boundaries between performer and audience. Throughout the play, everyone present sat in a circle while food was prepared onstage. After the final scene, the food was passed from performer to audience. The piece began in 2010 in the playwright’s native Uganda and appeared at L.A.’s ATX / Art + Innovation in June — a journey emblematic of the values that permeate Wright’s work: building relationships between artists across national borders, pushing aesthetic boundaries and encouraging audiences to discuss timely issues. Throughout 2014, Center Theatre Group will learn more about Wright’s creative vision, introduce her to other artists and support her work with a $10,000 award. She hopes that by fusing art, theatre, film and music, her projects will unite audiences and create new experiences for all. Originally created in 1996 as an annual fund to support innovative, adventurous theatre artists, the Sherwood Award was established in memory of Richard E. Sherwood, president and chairman of Center Theatre Group’s Board of Directors from 1980-1993. The award is endowed by the Sherwood family and honors his passionate commitment to theatre. For more about Wright’s work, visit TheGrid. CenterTheatreGroup.org and search “Sherwood Award winner.” To learn more about this program, visit CenterTheatreGroup.org/Sherwood.

Groundbreaking!” —
T
he people of China have long held that their magnificent culture was a gift from the heavens. Art was primarily a means to explore the connection between humankind and the higher universe. Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of genuine Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty, purity, and tremendous energy leave audiences greatly uplifted and deeply inspired.
“Absolutely beautiful... One big poetic event. So inspiring, I think I may have found some new ideas for the next Avatar.” — Robert Stromberg, Oscar-winning production designer for Avatar
CTG_WRAP_1213.indd 15
A Shen Yun performance features 100 world class performers, over 400 sets of exquisite hand-made costumes, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops – creating a spectacular performance beyond imagination. Shen Yun cannot be seen in China today, where traditional culture has been nearly lost. Yet the nonprofit Shen Yun has become an international phenomenon, bringing the wonders of 5,000 years of civilization to millions across the globe. Experience divine culture! Experience Shen Yun!
“I probably have reviewed over 3,000-4,000 shows, none can compare to what I saw tonight. Five Stars! ‘Mind-blowing’!”
“Really out of this world! There is no word to describe it... if I had to, the words might be ‘divine,’ ‘reborn’ and ‘hope.’ You have to see it to believe it.”
“I just wish there is a way I could cry out to mankind, and say they owe it to themselves to experience Shenyun!”

BACKSTAGE TOUR
Center Theatre Group | Donor Benefits
Theatrical Pond Hopping Bringing the Boys to LA
W
hen The Sunshine Boys’ production stage manager, Barclay Stiff, escorted donors on a backstage tour, the challenges of moving a production from London’s 700-seat Savoy Theatre to the big house of the Ahmanson Theatre became readily apparent.
A 3-hour tour (and then some) The set took a 3-week boat ride from London to Los Angeles. Just before it set sail for the U.S., the designers reassembled all the pieces one last time to make sure everything was there. After breaking it down again, they carefully packed it for shipment.
Push it under the rug The set uses all the props and stage pieces from the London production except the rugs and lamps. Those items were withheld due to customs regulations. Fortunately, this all happened weeks before the government shutdown, or else the set may never have made the voyage to the New World.

Put a plug in it London set designers excitedly re-created 1972 Americana for their production. However, when the set was reconstructed in L.A. a few of the finer aspects of American culture were lost in translation. One of the most obvious errors: The London designers created electrical outlets that looked like the kind in England. Second City, Re-Loaded
The Return of a ‘Twisted’ Christmas Carol
C
enter Theatre Group is pleased to present The Second City’s A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens! at the Kirk Douglas Theatre for the Director, Marc Warzecha photo by craig schwartz second year in a row. According to Director Marc Warzecha, audiences can expect more of the unexpected this time around. What makes this show different from other Second City performances? Improvisers usually create their own material. This process was more like traditional theatre — we use a script written by people who aren’t in the show, although there is improvisation within the show.
What can we look forward to this time around? A few new scenes as well as more improvisation have been added, based on the reactions from audiences last year.

into the action — made the show much more adult. There were some shocking admissions that created some really great moments.
What challenges did you face when creating this show? Staging this was a challenge as moving set pieces and keeping track of props and costumes are not as common in the improv/ sketch comedy world, where these things are often pantomimed.
What was your favorite moment last year? Richard Simmons did one of the celebrity cameos last year. That portion of the show was supposed to be scripted, but Richard got out of his seat, got the audience out of their seats and then just took over. It was tremendous.
What surprised you about performing at the KDT? The show is relatively clean — probably PG-13. However, the audience participation element — in which audience members wrote “the worst thing they ever did” on a piece of paper in the lobby before the show, and then the actors incorporated it
“Twisted” memories like Richard Simmons’ cameo would not be possible without the support of Center Theatre Group’s nearly 6,000 donors. This holiday season, CTG wishes to thank them for their important role in the art on our stages.

heatre pieces find their way to Center Theatre Group in many different ways. With Rodrigo Garcia’s You Should Have Stayed Home, Morons, that path began in Bogotá, Colombia, when Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller and Director of New Play Production/Associate Producer Diane Rodriguez attended El Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro in 2010. Director Manuel Orjuela’s site-specific staging of You Should Have Stayed Home, Morons and his unique aesthetic immediately caught Keller and Rodriguez’s attention. The piece, performed in Spanish and then titled ¡Haberos quedado en casa, capullos!, took them to various locations around Bogotá: in front of an apartment entrance, on the streets, in a bar and into Orjuela’s apartment. When she returned to Los Angeles, Rodriguez approached New York-based Andrea Thome to translate Garcia’s text into English with the goal of bringing this immersive piece to local audiences. This new version took audiences to four sites in downtown Los Angeles and raised important questions about parenthood, education, and individual social responsibility. This project was presented as part of Radar L.A., an international festival of contemporary theater presented by REDCAT and CalArts in association with Center Theatre Group. You Should Have Stayed Home, Morons was made possible by funding from The Andrew W. Flight of Imagination “Although it was based on a children’s book, we never thought of it as a show for children.” —Alex Timbers
Peter and the Starcatcher is a play about flight. No, not flying, which is almost incidental to the piece. It’s about the flight of imagination taken by the creative team in crafting the show, and by audiences that open themselves up to the magical journey. Based on the children’s book Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, the play, written by Rick Elice (co-author of Jersey Boys), ingeniously connects their novel in ways large and small to the original Peter Pan by James M. Barrie. The directors, Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, present Peter and the Starcatcher as story theatre, with actors taking on multiple roles and providing narration. The set is barebones, with locations cleverly suggested rather than defined, requiring audiences to use their mind’s eye to see. “We’re asking people to join in, like listening to the radio where everybody has their own image in their heads,”
said Roger Rees, who co-directed the show with Alex Timbers. Rees originated the role of Nicholas Nickleby in the 1980 Royal Shakespeare Company production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, and his involvement in that landmark work is precisely why Thomas Schumacher of Disney Theatricals brought Peter and the Starcatchers to him. “It was the summer of 2007, and Roger was running Williamstown Theatre Festival at the time,” said Elice. “Tom called him and said, ‘You’ve got this great theatre, and I’ve got this great property. Maybe you can take this book and do a Nicholas Nickleby kind of play with it.’ There was no commitment made; he was just handing a novel to Roger.” With limited time on his hands, Rees invited Timbers, who was at Williamstown developing the musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, to work on the piece with him. “There were certain important things we knew for the first workshop,” said Timbers. “Although it was based on a children’s book, we never thought of it as a show for children. We knew we wanted to indicate a world, and let the

audience fill in the blanks. We knew there would be no pirate ships onstage. We knew we wanted to use the same few props over and over to tell the story. And we knew it was going to be a play with musical elements.” Unlike most shows, Peter and the Starcatcher began with a concept but without a script. “They went to the prop shop and grabbed what was laying around,” said Elice, “which was a few sticks, a length of rope, a bucket and a stuffed bird. Everything else was physical and psychological invention. They spent a week developing some sections of the novel. Then Tom came to Williamstown with Ridley Pearson and some people from Disney to see what Roger and Alex had wrought.” It generated enough interest to lead to a second workshop later that year in New York. This time, Rees and Timbers felt they needed proper text, and they asked Elice to write it. “At this point, nobody knew whether there was going to be a play,” Elice said. “But they needed words, and they wanted the play to have an adult sensibility.”

“I thought it would be challenging to take a classic Hero’s Journey story in the Joseph Campbell vein, and divide the hero into two characters.” —Rick Elice
Elice wrote a couple of scenes for the second workshop that had nothing to do with the novel. Dave Barry was so impressed that he turned to Schumacher and said, “Is this guy going to write the play?” Although there had been no discussion, Schumacher answered, “Yes.” “Tom, Dave and Ridley gave me, rather courageously, permission to do whatever I wanted,” said Elice. “And I thought it would be fun to invent as much connective tissue as I could between this contemporary novel and Barrie’s original play. I tried to emulate stylistically all of the verbal tricks that James Barrie used in 1903: high comedy, low bawdy humor, puns, alliterations, anachronisms, songs, verse, verbal hijinks, sentiment balanced by irreverence, and artifice balanced by contemporary references. “In terms of the plot, I wanted to link all the mythology that James Barrie created and what we know about Peter Pan from the musical or the Disney animated movie, to the action of Dave and Ridley’s story,” he continues. “But I didn’t take any of the mythology as written in stone. I was a bit of an anarchist. I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to discover how Captain Hook really lost his hand? Wouldn’t it be interesting to know where Peter’s emotional attachment to his shadow comes from? Wouldn’t it be gratifying to learn why the dog who looks after the kids in Peter Pan is called Nana?’ There were dozens of connections, small and large.” P 6 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE
CTG-AHM_PROG_1213-Peter Star Catcher.indd 6
The play was done in its entirety for the first time at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, as part of the theatre’s developmental Page to Stage program. “You rehearse for four weeks and perform for three weeks, and after every performance the audience stays for a talk back,” said Elice. “Every day, people would tell us what worked, what didn’t, what was clear, what was puzzling. The feedback became part of the blueprint for the new draft of the play, which we worked on for New York.” “The La Jolla production was a great first step,” said Timbers. “But the design was a bit rudimentary, and there were still aspects of the script that felt very child-like, such as a talking porpoise. We began cutting back on some of the kiddie-leaning material in the script and decided to go for a grittier, more downtown aesthetic visually.” A considerably revised version premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2011, before moving on to Broadway the following year. “One of the things I’d learned at La Jolla was that nobody’s really interested in a hero who is the hero from page one,” said Elice. “So I eliminated the youngest and most feral Lost Boy, the one who was afraid of his own shadow, and gave his qualities to this boy who, by the end of the play, would become truly heroic. And the only way he would be able to do that would be through a chance
encounter with a female character, who in the novel and the original version of the play was a sidekick, as female characters often are. I thought it would be challenging to take a classic Hero’s Journey story in the Joseph Campbell vein, and divide the hero into two characters. One would be the boy, Peter, and one would be the girl, the Starcatcher — a smart, spiky kid with the DNA of Scout Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird and Jo March from Little Women; these highly active, very empowered, super-bright, hypercurious girls who are kind of isolated because they’re so special.” Even the title of the play expresses this dualhero approach — which explains how the novel, Peter and the Starcatchers, lost a letter to become Peter and the Starcatcher on stage. Through all the changes, the one constant has been the concept: an innovative use of time-honored stagecraft to stimulate our imagination. “I think we excite the library in everyone’s minds, and that’s a good thing,” said Rees. “Theatre doesn’t need the descriptive elements that are used so often, when you have real objects, real things. You don’t need any of it. That’s the beauty of language, the power of ideas. It’s an adult way of looking at theatre, and it’s endlessly interesting for audiences. It’s also a lot of fun.”

rather than defined, often with little more than a piece of rope and savvy lighting. (Lighting designer Jeff Croiter and sound designer Darron L West also received Tony Awards for their work.) However, the one defined space is the proscenium, which serves as an entry into this fantasy world. “We felt we needed a framework, like a portal, to tell the story,” said Werle. “In the Peter Pan story, there’s a window. The proscenium serves that purpose here; it puts us in a recognizable, Victorian musical hall. And we created the proscenium with trash.”
One Person’s Trash is Another Person’s Tony Award Designing for the Future THAT MAY BE AN EXAGGERATION, BUT NOT BY MUCH. Both scenic designer Donyale Werle and costume designer Paloma Young received 2012 Tony Awards for their inspired work on Peter and the Starcatcher, in which they repurposed discarded objects, items that had outlived their usefulness and, yes, rubbish, to create a magical, environmentally friendly ambiance for this vibrantly original show.
Werle is a leader of the Broadway Green Alliance, which educates the theatre community about making more sustainable choices. “It’s really uncommon for Broadway to think this way,” she said. “Who uses trash on Broadway? You have the money to build a brand new set. What the Broadway Green Alliance tries to say is there are so many different ways to think about what we put on stage.”
“Costume designers have been salvaging things for years,” said Young. “We don’t throw things out at the end of every show. But sets wind up in landfills. So what Donyale is doing is amazing. She’s raising consciousness about the environment within the scenic community.”
Recycled and sustainable materials have long been integral to Werle’s set designs, and she uses them in delightful ways in Peter and the Starcatcher, a show, she said, that is “about creating something out of nothing.” It’s a celebration of the imagination. A dozen actors take on more than 100 characters. Locations, like a ship or an island, are suggested
The Broadway proscenium includes more than 3,500 corks, 800 bottle caps, and 300 pieces of cutlery, as well as toys, ropes, beads, cooking timers and tools, tops of cans, zippers, CDs, vinyl records, bamboo sticks and mannequin arms. “We searched for things and collected things,” said Werle. “Through the Broadway Green Alliance, kids collected bottle caps and donated their little plastic toys. I didn’t start with a particular vision. I rely on the materials that we find and the artists that I work with to create a piece.” Cork is used to line the shape of the proscenium in place of Ethafoam, an expensive thermoplastic that eventually ends up in landfills and does not biodegrade quickly. But many of the items on the proscenium are not environmentally friendly. “I love plastic, and plastic is awful,” said Werle. “But I don’t purchase plastic; I find it. By using things like CDs — which we found in a trash bin — and bottle caps, we’re keeping them out of landfills.” With each incarnation of the show from New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) to Broadway to off-Broadway to the national tour, most everything was recycled. There is a transom seen on tour that first appeared in the NYTW production. “We were driving around one day in a Zipcar on a trash run, and there was a bodega that had smoke coming out of it,” said Werle. “The doors had been removed and put on the sidewalk because they were scorched, and we thought they would make the perfect transom. They were still warm from the fire when we grabbed them, and for the entire first run of the show, there was a smell of charred wood.” PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P 7

The first act takes place on two ships, The Neverland and The Wasp, and culminates in a storm-induced shipwreck. The second act is set on an island with a mountaintop, a jungle and a grotto. There are no realistic physical manifestations of any of these places, yet they are vividly clear thanks to some well-chosen props, lots of rope, and virtuoso lighting. The Neverland and The Wasp are represented by toy boats made out of popsicle sticks, bottle caps, corks, tongue depressors, cardboard and snaps. The island that rises at the end of Act I is simply a piece of silk, dyed and painted with a hint of sparkle. Most of the locales in Act II were made out of fabrics and screens left over from the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid that were donated by “ecologically minded” Disney Theatrical, one of the show’s producers. By sheer coincidence, Act II of Peter and the Starcatcher opens with a scene featuring some peculiar-looking mermaids, courtesy of Young’s hilarious costumes made up of recycled odds and ends. “The costumes reflect the sense of play that is in the show,” said Young, “the way in which the show celebrates a child’s imagination. As adults, we remember when our entire world was our house, and we used things that were in our house to imagine great worlds. The mermaid costumes are decorated with old domestic objects and items you’d find in boxes at a yard sale. There are a lot of old kitchen tools: strainers, steamers, colanders, wooden spoons, metal spoons, pie servers, hand juicers. There are dirty sponges and copper scrubbers, toys with grime all over them, doll parts, old soda cans and bottle caps.”
“Peter and the Starcatcher is about creating something out of nothing. It’s a celebration of the imagination.” —Donyale Werle
The costumes for the lost boys were inspired by photos of 19th century orphans — and punk. “There’s an individuality that exists in the punk world,” said Young. “Because we were making ensemble costumes, and because our actors also become part of the set at times, there had to be some sort of similarity between the costumes that could make them all one at certain points. Within the punk community there is a very tight color palette and very specific textures. But at the same time, their look is individual in the ways that they’ve chosen to express these

very controlled colors and textures. So each costume is inspired by the actor and the character he plays. The costumes have morphed slightly for each production, based on what the new actor brings to the show. The costumes are made almost entirely of cotton and wool; in all my work, I am very much a fan of natural fibers and things that are more environmentally friendly.” On Broadway, about 90 percent of the set in Act II was made of recycled items. That is not the case on tour, where the rigors of moving from city to city require more durable material. “Salvaged materials have a shorter life span,” said Werle, “which means that it’s more sustainable to use new, green material.”
used in the show. “Those kids could then come with their families to see the show,” said Young, “and they would see their old teenage mutant Ninja turtle in the proscenium, or the bottle caps they collected in the crown of a mermaid. I think it’s very empowering for a child for their effort to be seen. Some of what they collected is being used on the tour. So this little bottle cap that a kindergartner collected a few years ago is now going to be touring the country and seen by thousands and thousands of people. I think that embodies what this show does. It celebrates performing and the imagination, and how far a small gesture can go.”
Both Werle and Young are especially pleased that children were involved in gathering many of the items that are PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P 9

BEHIND THE SCENES
Center Theatre Group | DouglasPlus
From the Page to the Stage DouglasPlus Celebrates Solo Artists
F
or the past three years, members of Center Theatre Group’s Inner Circle have ventured to the Ojai Playwrights Conference to see new works in their early stages of development. With DouglasPlus, donors had a chance to see how two of these works — St. Jude and Uncle Ho to Uncle Sam — evolved over time.
C
enter Theatre Group is Los Angeles’ preeminent nonprofit theatre company. On our three stages — the Ahmanson Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas Theatre — we present the highest quality and broadest range of theatre: groundbreaking new works, explosive productions of the classics and hit Broadway plays and musicals. In the most current eight seasons alone, a total of 133 productions has been selected for presentation, including 33 world premieres. Fifteen productions have subsequently been produced in New York.
“Luis Alfaro’s St. Jude was the highlight of the 2012 Ojai Playwrights Conference. It was a work in progress, the first part of Alfaro’s memoir of growing up Hispanic in California and dealing with his father’s life-threatening illness. To have seen the full version at its opening night — with its wonderful mix of love, respect, honor and humor — was a special thrill. Watching an exceptional artist like Alfaro take his work from page to workshop to stage is what makes the adventure of theatre so exciting.” – Miles Benickes, Artists & Educators Forum Co-Chair
To learn how you can get closer to the creative process through giving to CTG, contact Donald Jolly at 213.972.3149.
A History of Excellence
toP to bottom: Luis Alfaro in St. Jude. Trieu Tran in Uncle Ho to Uncle Sam. Roger Guenveur Smith in Rodney King.
The same high standards that we apply to our stages extend to our education and community outreach programs. Through special performances, residencies at schools, discount tickets and educational materials, we reach each year over 19,000 students, educators and community members who would not otherwise experience professional theatre. We are proud to continue our 46-year tradition of contributing to the culture of our city and to the enrichment of the national theatre community, and we are grateful to our subscribers, donors and board whose generous support makes our work possible.

This time of year provides many ways to reflect on who we are and what we have accomplished during the past year. It is a time in which we celebrate the New Year and wish each other health and happiness. We spend these months celebrating our faith, our families and our friends. It is also a time to think of others and about giving to organizations that we know do great work in our community. The list of charitable organizations seems to get longer each year. Our challenge, as we each think about giving, is to help as many people in our community as we can and for National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles to make those donations go as far as possible. As you make your choices on where to give, please consider giving to the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates that strive for social justice through the direct services we provide. We are a determined group of women and men who continue to serve our community as long as there is need. NCJW/LA serves over 19,000 individuals each year along with providing thousands of pieces of free clothing for those in-need and at-risk. We continue to fill in gaps of service for Los Angeles through our Women Helping Women Community Counseling & Support Services and Women Helping Children Art & Literacy Programs for Youth. You can give through our website www.ncjwla.org or through donations of goods to our Council Thrift Shops. Very few people like to ask for donations, but if we do not ask we will not receive the donations needed to support the many programs and services NCJW/LA provides in our community. It takes just a little bit from everyone to help a lot of people. If each of you reading this gives a few dollars or donates goods to Council Thrift Shops, you will know that you are helping your neighbor, a friend or someone in your community. What better way to celebrate the holidays this year. Your support of our Los Angeles community through your generosity in donating to Council Thrift Shops and support of the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles has an enormous and positive effect on the lives of so many individuals. Wishing you and your families a healthy and peaceful holiday season.

Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf and Elizabeth Hofmann. They’re all here at Villa Gardens. From literary lectures and political discussions to evening concerts, Elizabeth found a rich new quality of life, a warm welcome, and the peace of mind that comes from living in an award-winning continuing care retirement community. And that was just the beginning. She now leads a tai-chi group, sharing a long-held interest with her new friends. And she’s a mentor, too, introducing new Villa Gardens residents to the stimulating, supportive community she loves. And with Pasadena’s restaurants, shops, plays, museums, and her daughter all close-by, Elizabeth is right at home.
