rindell Roberts Gottlieb, one of Center Theatre Group’s most generous donors, hosted a fabulous “starry” night at her home, The Milton. This evening was a thankyou to significant individual donors to CTG whose support is recognized through the Artistic Director’s Circle and the Artists & Educators Forum, as well as to major corporate and foundation funders. Gottlieb transformed her home into the streets of New York for the featured performers, Joe Iconis and Family. Iconis is an up-and-coming Broadway lyricist and composer, and thanks to Gottlieb’s generous support, CTG presented the world premiere of his latest musical, The Black Suits, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre last month. The evening also generated more than $800,000 in major giving to CTG over the next five years.

When this CTG Board member isn’t in the courtroom, she’s courtside with her husband, Rodger — the managing partner of Landau, Gottfried & Berger LLP — watching their kids play sports. As the Corporate Circle’s chair, she works behind the scenes to form new partnerships for CTG, and will lead its 44 members toward raising nearly $500,000 this year for youth arts exploration and emerging playwrights.

Your favorite CTG experience? A magical moment sharing War Horse and CTG’s Young Audiences Program with my children. What CTG education program do you wish you could have experienced as a young adult? The August Wilson Program. The opportunity to stand on the Taper stage and speak the words of one of the country’s best playwrights — simply phenomenal. What’s your must-see show this season? Harmony. Because who doesn’t love Barry Manilow? What is your idea of the perfect play? Anything that consists of rich dialogue, that makes me think, and that taps into the human condition. And if I’m moved to tears, all the better. What show would you love to see at CTG? Wit at the Mark Taper Forum.

Landau Makes the Case for Arts Education What playwright would you trust to write your life story? Who would you cast as yourself? Wendy Wasserstein would have been perfect because she understood the dynamic of Jewish households. And I would cast Idina Menzel because her voice is extraordinary. What character from a play is most in need of legal advice? Sweeney Todd. Why does Sidley Austin support theatre in Los Angeles? Theatre is a critical part of the culture of Los Angeles. I’ve loved theatre since I was a child, and I am proud that Sidley supports my involvement with CTG. With approximately 1,700 lawyers in 19 offices worldwide, Sidley Austin LLP has built a reputation as a premier legal adviser for global businesses and financial institutions. For the third consecutive year, Sidley received the most first-tier national rankings of any U.S. law firm in the 2013 U.S. News — Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” survey. ®

Miranda Wright Receives 2014 Sherwood Award photo by ryan miller/capture imaging.

SHERWOOD AWARD

Center Theatre Group | Education & Community Partnerships

Honoring Innovation M

eet Miranda Wright, a Los Angeles-based theatre producer and this year’s Sherwood Award winner. As executive director of Los Angeles Performance Practice, a producing organization and artists’ network comprised of independent artists and companies, Wright has contributed to groundbreaking theatre through new approaches to collaboration, technology and social engagement.

Production values “I’ve been ‘producing’ since I was a small child,” Wright says. “I would gather the neighborhood kids together to watch Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre on VHS and then organize everyone into roles for replicated performances on the community lawn.” With the support of the Sherwood Award, Wright looks forward to projects that embrace this same collaborative spirit. “My favorite part of what I do is actually talking with artists about their ideas, and helping them think through ways to bring those ideas into reality,” she says. “The artists I work with never stop surprising me.”

Fusing genres, uniting audiences One of Wright’s proudest career moments was producing Deborah Asiimwe’s Cooking Oil with director Emily Mendelsohn. The piece explored women’s access to education in Africa, aid distribution, and the role of the arts in social change, all while challenging the traditional

boundaries between performer and audience. Throughout the play, everyone present sat in a circle while food was prepared onstage. After the final scene, the food was passed from performer to audience. The piece began in 2010 in the playwright’s native Uganda and appeared at L.A.’s ATX / Art + Innovation in June — a journey emblematic of the values that permeate Wright’s work: building relationships between artists across national borders, pushing aesthetic boundaries and encouraging audiences to discuss timely issues. Throughout 2014, Center Theatre Group will learn more about Wright’s creative vision, introduce her to other artists and support her work with a $10,000 award. She hopes that by fusing art, theatre, film and music, her projects will unite audiences and create new experiences for all. Originally created in 1996 as an annual fund to support innovative, adventurous theatre artists, the Sherwood Award was established in memory of Richard E. Sherwood, president and chairman of Center Theatre Group’s Board of Directors from 1980-1993. The award is endowed by the Sherwood family and honors his passionate commitment to theatre. For more about Wright’s work, visit TheGrid. CenterTheatreGroup.org and search “Sherwood Award winner.” To learn more about this program, visit CenterTheatreGroup.org/Sherwood.

Groundbreaking!” —

T

he people of China have long held that their magnificent culture was a gift from the heavens. Art was primarily a means to explore the connection between humankind and the higher universe. Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of genuine Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty, purity, and tremendous energy leave audiences greatly uplifted and deeply inspired.

“Absolutely beautiful... One big poetic event. So inspiring, I think I may have found some new ideas for the next Avatar.” — Robert Stromberg, Oscar-winning production designer for Avatar

CTG_WRAP_1213.indd 15

A Shen Yun performance features 100 world class performers, over 400 sets of exquisite hand-made costumes, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops – creating a spectacular performance beyond imagination. Shen Yun cannot be seen in China today, where traditional culture has been nearly lost. Yet the nonprofit Shen Yun has become an international phenomenon, bringing the wonders of 5,000 years of civilization to millions across the globe. Experience divine culture! Experience Shen Yun!

“I probably have reviewed over 3,000-4,000 shows, none can compare to what I saw tonight. Five Stars! ‘Mind-blowing’!”

“Really out of this world! There is no word to describe it... if I had to, the words might be ‘divine,’ ‘reborn’ and ‘hope.’ You have to see it to believe it.”

“I just wish there is a way I could cry out to mankind, and say they owe it to themselves to experience Shenyun!”

BACKSTAGE TOUR

Center Theatre Group | Donor Benefits

Theatrical Pond Hopping Bringing the Boys to LA

W

hen The Sunshine Boys’ production stage manager, Barclay Stiff, escorted donors on a backstage tour, the challenges of moving a production from London’s 700-seat Savoy Theatre to the big house of the Ahmanson Theatre became readily apparent.

A 3-hour tour (and then some) The set took a 3-week boat ride from London to Los Angeles. Just before it set sail for the U.S., the designers reassembled all the pieces one last time to make sure everything was there. After breaking it down again, they carefully packed it for shipment.

Push it under the rug The set uses all the props and stage pieces from the London production except the rugs and lamps. Those items were withheld due to customs regulations. Fortunately, this all happened weeks before the government shutdown, or else the set may never have made the voyage to the New World.

Put a plug in it London set designers excitedly re-created 1972 Americana for their production. However, when the set was reconstructed in L.A. a few of the finer aspects of American culture were lost in translation. One of the most obvious errors: The London designers created electrical outlets that looked like the kind in England. Second City, Re-Loaded

The Return of a ‘Twisted’ Christmas Carol

C

enter Theatre Group is pleased to present The Second City’s A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens! at the Kirk Douglas Theatre for the Director, Marc Warzecha photo by craig schwartz second year in a row. According to Director Marc Warzecha, audiences can expect more of the unexpected this time around. What makes this show different from other Second City performances? Improvisers usually create their own material. This process was more like traditional theatre — we use a script written by people who aren’t in the show, although there is improvisation within the show.

What can we look forward to this time around? A few new scenes as well as more improvisation have been added, based on the reactions from audiences last year.

into the action — made the show much more adult. There were some shocking admissions that created some really great moments.

What challenges did you face when creating this show? Staging this was a challenge as moving set pieces and keeping track of props and costumes are not as common in the improv/ sketch comedy world, where these things are often pantomimed.

What was your favorite moment last year? Richard Simmons did one of the celebrity cameos last year. That portion of the show was supposed to be scripted, but Richard got out of his seat, got the audience out of their seats and then just took over. It was tremendous.

What surprised you about performing at the KDT? The show is relatively clean — probably PG-13. However, the audience participation element — in which audience members wrote “the worst thing they ever did” on a piece of paper in the lobby before the show, and then the actors incorporated it

“Twisted” memories like Richard Simmons’ cameo would not be possible without the support of Center Theatre Group’s nearly 6,000 donors. This holiday season, CTG wishes to thank them for their important role in the art on our stages.

heatre pieces find their way to Center Theatre Group in many different ways. With Rodrigo Garcia’s You Should Have Stayed Home, Morons, that path began in Bogotá, Colombia, when Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller and Director of New Play Production/Associate Producer Diane Rodriguez attended El Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro in 2010. Director Manuel Orjuela’s site-specific staging of You Should Have Stayed Home, Morons and his unique aesthetic immediately caught Keller and Rodriguez’s attention. The piece, performed in Spanish and then titled ¡Haberos quedado en casa, capullos!, took them to various locations around Bogotá: in front of an apartment entrance, on the streets, in a bar and into Orjuela’s apartment. When she returned to Los Angeles, Rodriguez approached New York-based Andrea Thome to translate Garcia’s text into English with the goal of bringing this immersive piece to local audiences. This new version took audiences to four sites in downtown Los Angeles and raised important questions about parenthood, education, and individual social responsibility. This project was presented as part of Radar L.A., an international festival of contemporary theater presented by REDCAT and CalArts in association with Center Theatre Group. You Should Have Stayed Home, Morons was made possible by funding from The Andrew W. Notes from the Playwright

Dunne family photo courtesy of Sebastian Barry.

T

he Steward of Christendom is part of a series of plays looking for the lost, hidden or seldom mentioned people in one Irish family. In a way, the approach to my greatgrandfather, Thomas Dunne, was the most worrying, because he was, according to whispered family history, the last Catholic head of the Dublin Metropolitan Police before its change in regime in 1922. In the folklore of Dublin working-class life and Trades Union history, he hardly holds an enviable place. He was the man with responsibility for Dublin Castle, the very heart of British rule in Ireland. Yet he was a countryman, whose father was the steward of an old estate in Wicklow. His tastes were simple. He was a big strong person in his heyday. It was only when I began to think of him as an old man, and placed him alone in the county home in Baltinglass, boggy in the head and thinner and unpredictable enough to have his grandchildren kept away from him, that I was able to overcome a certain fear of his life and reach the man himself. I’ve had to recreate him from hints and largely imagine him. He is never going to be a comfortable ancestor. But he could not be denied his place among the plays for all that. –Sebastian Barry, 1995

The World of Thomas Dunne by Amy Woodson-Boulton

T Michael Collins.

©Sean Sexton Collection/CORBIS

Michael Collins: Irish

republican, statesman and military strategist who helped lead Irish forces to victory against Britain and then led the Free State Army in the Irish Civil War. Collins participated in the Easter Rising of 1916 and was a leader of the Dáil Éireann, the new Irish legislature that revolutionaries established in 1919. As head of the Irish Republican Army during the Anglo-Irish War, Collins helped lead the Army to victory and became a hero to nationalists. Collins helped negotiate the Anglo-Irish Treaty that ended that war and became a minister in the Provisional Government of the new Irish Free State: the outgoing British administration handed over Dublin Castle to him in 1922. However, a faction of nationalists led by Collins’ former comrade de Valera never accepted the treaty and rose in armed rebellion against the new state. Collins went on to lead the Free State Army during the Irish Civil War and was assassinated on August 22, 1922. Many grieved at the loss of Collins as a leader who might have helped to stabilize the new government, to heal the fractured republican movement, and to eventually reunite with Northern Ireland.

he Steward of Christendom begins in 1932, in the wake of decades of radical change in Ireland. The Irish Free State was finally established in 1922, after centuries of struggle against British rule and the Protestant aristocracy that had ruled over the Catholic majority since the 16th century. However, independence came with a high cost, achieved only through war with Britain and a bitter civil war between Irish nationalists themselves. Most Catholics celebrated national independence, but for Irish loyalists it was a time of profound dislocation and loss. The character Thomas Dunne, Chief Superintendent of the Dublin police force and a Catholic loyal to the British crown, was responsible for maintaining the established order in a time of revolution. Here are some of the people, places and events that marked his life.

Dublin Castle. photo by artur bogacki. @rognar.

Dublin Castle: Symbol of British rule in Ireland for over 700 years. First built by an English king in 1204, it developed into a complex containing the offices and living quarters for the British Crown’s government in Ireland, including the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Irish nationalists derisively referred to Catholics who worked there as “Castle Catholics.” The character Thomas Dunne, as a police superintendent, was given living quarters in the Castle for himself and his family.

Ireland in the First World War, 1914-1918: Britain delayed giving Ireland its own government and called on the Irish to volunteer to serve on the Western Front. Just after Britain agreed to the goal of limited independence for Ireland, the Empire was plunged into the Great War. Over two hundred thousand Irishmen would ultimately freely enlist and serve during the war, fighting alongside the British soldiers known as “Tommies.” Among nationalists, enlistment was bitterly controversial; some chose to enlist and were condemned by others for taking up arms for the Empire. Easter Rising, 1916: Short-lived Irish Republican Brotherhood uprising that fanned the flames of nationalism. In the hopes of inspiring a national rebellion through a grand action — or even martyrdom — about 1,200 armed Irish nationalists seized control of Dublin’s General Post Office and other sites in Dublin and proclaimed the Irish Republic. Fighting lasted for five days, April 24-29, 1916. Initial reaction to the Rising was generally unsupportive, but after government forces summarily executed 15 leaders, public outrage created support for the participants’ cause. Key organizers, including Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera, survived and became important leaders in the wars to come. Anglo-Irish War, 1919-1921: War for Irish independence between the Irish Republican Army and British forces. After the First World War ended and Britain still delayed granting independence to Ireland, nationalists decided to take matters into their own hands. In 1919, the nationalist political party Sinn Fein established an independent government with its own legislature (the Dáil Éireann), its own elected president (Eamon de Valera) and its own military force (the Irish Republican Army or IRA). The IRA began a guerilla war against Crown police forces; in response, the British government bolstered those forces by recruiting WWI veterans, who became known as the “Black and Tans.” Soldiers fresh from the brutality of the trenches, the Black and Tans gained a reputation for ruthlessness, which furthered public support for the IRA. The war ended with the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which created the independent Irish Free State but was deeply controversial among nationalists because of continued close relations between Ireland, Britain, and the British Empire. The Irish Civil War, 1922-1923: War between Irish nationalists over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Although most of the Irish population as a whole supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty, a majority of the IRA rejected it and joined ranks to oppose the new Irish state, igniting a civil war. Like the Anglo-Irish War, this was a guerilla war, but this time it was between families, former comrades and close friends. The streets of Dublin became, briefly, a battlefield, and the conflict left around one thousand people dead,

James Larkin: In 1913,

fiery labor union leader James Larkin organized a general strike in Dublin that led to a fatal confrontation between workers and the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Larkin was an inspired orator, famous for his use of the line, “The great appear great because we are on our knees: Let us rise.” When Larkin’s speeches inspired a wave of unionization, business leaders responded with a “lock out,” barring all union members from employment. In response, Larkin and the union called out other workers to join a general strike, inspiring 20,000 workers to leave their jobs. On August 31, 1913, at a workers’ rally on Sackville (now O’Connell) Street, the Dublin Metropolitan Police Force charged the crowd, killing two men. In the play, Thomas Dunne ordered the attack, fearing for the city if the crowds got out of control.

Robert Emmett: Early rebel and martyr for Irish independence. After the creation of the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland in 1801, numerous Irish movements arose seeking to gain independence from Britain and to break the power of the Protestant elite. Emmett was one of many such failed militants; he planned to take Dublin Castle in 1803, but when his plot was discovered he fled to the Wicklow Mountains, and he was later executed. His final speech became a rallying cry for Irish nationalists: “When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth, then and not till then, let my epitaph be written.”

including Michael Collins, ambushed by his former followers and soldiers in County Cork. After a period of chaos and bloodshed, the pro-treaty Irish Free State defeated the IRA. Eamon de Valera: Irish republican, statesman, President of the first independent Irish legislature and leader in postindependence Ireland. De Valera commanded troops during the Easter Rising of 1916, for which he was sentenced to death, but he was reprieved in part because he was born in the United States. After the Dáil Éireann elected de Valera as its first President, he came into conflict with his close friend and ally Michael Collins, who directed the Irish Republican Army’s guerilla war against the British while de Valera left to raise funds in America and to try (unsuccessfully) to obtain official U.S. recognition for their new nationalist government. This breech was exacerbated when de Valera sent Collins to negotiate the treaty ending the AngloIrish War, making Collins the target of the inevitable controversy that followed. Collins and de Valera finally broke over the treaty, with de Valera leading the anti-treaty side of the Irish Civil War. Although de Valera’s side lost the Civil War, in the years after the conflict, de Valera went on to lead the Irish Free State: he would have been Prime Minister in 1932, the time of the play.

Humewood Castle. photo courtesy of national inventory of architectural heritage.

Humewood Castle: A large country estate in Kiltegan, County Wicklow, property of the Hume family since the 15th century. In the play, Thomas Dunne’s father is steward of the estate. From at least the 17th century onward, the Protestant landowning class, often “absentees” who spent most of their time and money in more fashionable places like Dublin or London, relied on “stewards,” estate managers, often native Catholic Irish. These men became the face of their landlords, responsible for collecting rents and negotiating with tenants. When those duties included raising rents and carrying out evictions, tenants could see the stewards as enemies and collaborators. ○

BEHIND THE SCENES

Center Theatre Group | DouglasPlus

From the Page to the Stage DouglasPlus Celebrates Solo Artists

F

or the past three years, members of Center Theatre Group’s Inner Circle have ventured to the Ojai Playwrights Conference to see new works in their early stages of development. With DouglasPlus, donors had a chance to see how two of these works — St. Jude and Uncle Ho to Uncle Sam — evolved over time.

C

enter Theatre Group is Los Angeles’ preeminent nonprofit theatre company. On our three stages — the Ahmanson Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas Theatre — we present the highest quality and broadest range of theatre: groundbreaking new works, explosive productions of the classics and hit Broadway plays and musicals. In the most current eight seasons alone, a total of 133 productions has been selected for presentation, including 33 world premieres. Fifteen productions have subsequently been produced in New York.

“Luis Alfaro’s St. Jude was the highlight of the 2012 Ojai Playwrights Conference. It was a work in progress, the first part of Alfaro’s memoir of growing up Hispanic in California and dealing with his father’s life-threatening illness. To have seen the full version at its opening night — with its wonderful mix of love, respect, honor and humor — was a special thrill. Watching an exceptional artist like Alfaro take his work from page to workshop to stage is what makes the adventure of theatre so exciting.” – Miles Benickes, Artists & Educators Forum Co-Chair

A History of Excellence

The same high standards that we apply to our stages extend to our education and community outreach programs. Through special performances, residencies at schools, discount tickets and educational materials, we reach each year over 19,000 students, educators and community members who would not otherwise experience professional theatre. We are proud to continue our 46-year tradition of contributing to the culture of our city and to the enrichment of the national theatre community, and we are grateful to our subscribers, donors and board whose generous support makes our work possible.

This time of year provides many ways to reflect on who we are and what we have accomplished during the past year. It is a time in which we celebrate the New Year and wish each other health and happiness. We spend these months celebrating our faith, our families and our friends. It is also a time to think of others and about giving to organizations that we know do great work in our community. The list of charitable organizations seems to get longer each year. Our challenge, as we each think about giving, is to help as many people in our community as we can and for National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles to make those donations go as far as possible. As you make your choices on where to give, please consider giving to the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates that strive for social justice through the direct services we provide. We are a determined group of women and men who continue to serve our community as long as there is need. NCJW/LA serves over 19,000 individuals each year along with providing thousands of pieces of free clothing for those in-need and at-risk. We continue to fill in gaps of service for Los Angeles through our Women Helping Women Community Counseling & Support Services and Women Helping Children Art & Literacy Programs for Youth. You can give through our website www.ncjwla.org or through donations of goods to our Council Thrift Shops. Very few people like to ask for donations, but if we do not ask we will not receive the donations needed to support the many programs and services NCJW/LA provides in our community. It takes just a little bit from everyone to help a lot of people. If each of you reading this gives a few dollars or donates goods to Council Thrift Shops, you will know that you are helping your neighbor, a friend or someone in your community. What better way to celebrate the holidays this year. Your support of our Los Angeles community through your generosity in donating to Council Thrift Shops and support of the National Council of Jewish Women/Los Angeles has an enormous and positive effect on the lives of so many individuals. Wishing you and your families a healthy and peaceful holiday season.

Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf and Elizabeth Hofmann. They’re all here at Villa Gardens. From literary lectures and political discussions to evening concerts, Elizabeth found a rich new quality of life, a warm welcome, and the peace of mind that comes from living in an award-winning continuing care retirement community. And that was just the beginning. She now leads a tai-chi group, sharing a long-held interest with her new friends. And she’s a mentor, too, introducing new Villa Gardens residents to the stimulating, supportive community she loves. And with Pasadena’s restaurants, shops, plays, museums, and her daughter all close-by, Elizabeth is right at home.

Elizabeth Hofmann

“It feels like coming home again. You just have to walk out your door to find people who are happy to see you.” Find home. Find new friends. Find it all. – Voted Best Place to Retire in Pasadena – 842 E. VILLA STREET
