The Sunshine Boys Ahmanson Theatre Sept 24–Nov 3, 2013

Center Theatre Group is Los Angeles’ preeminent non-profit theatre company. On our three stages — the Ahmanson Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas Theatre — we present the highest quality and broadest range of theatre: groundbreaking new works, explosive productions of the classics and hit Broadway plays and musicals. In the most current seven seasons alone, a total of 131 productions has been selected for presentation, including 30 world premieres. Fifteen productions have gone on to be produced in New York. At the 2006 and 2007 Tony Awards, three CTG productions received a total of 25 nominations, more than any other theatre company in the country.

Stein Family Foundation Supports Theatre for Social Justice For Center Theatre Group donor Judie Stein, director of the Stein Family Foundation, theatre is best when it fights for social justice and awareness. It’s no surprise, then, that Judie has lent her support to The Scottsboro Boys, the second CTG production so distinguished. The foundation previously endorsed Parade, the musical based on the true story of the lynching of Leo Frank, a Jewish factory manager in Atlanta. Like Parade, The Scottsboro Boys draws its inspiration from a shameful travesty in American history to create a brilliant, unsettling and provocative piece of musical entertainment. Judie believes good theatre should entertain audiences — uniquely, thrillingly and unexpectedly. In her view, a play becomes memorable and significant when it inspires the highest instincts and greatest insights, while rousing audiences with its music. Judie Stein.

Judie’s love for this kind of special entertainment has informed her long and varied career in the arts, including performing and creating for theatre, film and television. She is also a devoted advocate for animal rights and a leadership partner for The Humane Society’s Equine Protection Department. Judie dedicates her support for this production of The Scottsboro Boys to the memory of her parents and her husband, Dr. Ira Friedman, who shared this passion for social justice. n

The Space Between Audience and Artist “Most of all, what excites me about this gesture is that these patrons felt the urge to reach out through the very space between audience and artist, to communicate their belief in us, all for a story and a production they want to see succeed.” —Marco Ramirez

l to r: Marco

Ramirez, Joni and Miles Benickes.

It takes a village to produce a play, says playwright Marco Ramirez, and his new work, The Royale, has been no exception. The production premiered at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in May, culminating a partnership between Ramirez and Center Theatre Group that began in 2010, when he joined CTG’s Writers’ Workshop.

Kelley Kirkpatrick, associate artistic director and producer for The Royale, immediately shared the good news with Ramirez, who was moved by the Benickes’ gift.

“It might come as a surprise,” Ramirez says, “but in most productions, an American playwright also has to worry about everyday practical concerns, from fundraising to finding a performance space to painting sets. But because CTG has such an amazing infrastructure, I can leave the producing to trained producers and the set construction to people who know what the heck they are doing.”

“Once in a while, you’re given a real gift, something above and beyond a positive audience reaction. … I’ll always remember the confused sixth-grader who told me I couldn’t have written a play, because plays are supposed to be boring. I’ll remember the woman in the audience who blurted out, ‘No!’ when a character onstage made a wrong but inevitable decision. And I’ll remember when Kelley informed me that some enthusiastic patrons offered to help The Royale any way they could.”

This support allowed Ramirez to focus his energy entirely on the script, a gift he says he does not take for granted. “If the play is any good, I’ll gladly take a bit of the credit, but I also owe thanks to the many brilliant minds at work at CTG. Their diligent work has made it easier to refinish, rewrite and mount this thing.”

A writer, he says, often works in solitude, and knowing his efforts resonate with others feels very gratifying.

For the Benickes, giving generously to the theatre and this production in particular is not only about giving back to an art form that has enriched their lives for decades, but also about ensuring the future of theatre and its vital impact in our community.

In February, the village behind The Royale reaped the benefits of this collaborative spirit after the play’s first public reading. Among the attendees were Joni and Miles Benickes, co-chairs for the Artists & Educators Forum, a group of donors who make generous commitments to CTG’s education and new play development programs.

“Our daughter, Erika, has branded us ‘CTG’: Compulsive Theatre-Goers,” Joni says. “And it’s true. For us, nothing compares to the thrill of seeing live performance in an art form that helps us better understand our world and ourselves.

A few days after the reading, the pair told CTG the play impressed and inspired them. They offered to provide additional support to the production.

“And Marco Ramirez is right,” she continues. “It takes a village to make that thrill possible. We are honored to be a part of that village.” n

“Helping CTG fulfill its commitment to presenting new work is a large part of what attracted us to the Artists & Educators Forum,” Miles says. “Providing support to a play like The Royale and the work of Marco Ramirez is a privilege.”

Volunteer Murray Heltzer Motivated by Lifelong Love for Theatre Murray Heltzer grew up in the Bronx and moved to Los Angeles at 14. A “frustrated song and dance man,” he says his early exposure to Broadway productions hooked him for life. The memory of riding the New York subway, coming up to the sidewalk, and entering the spectacular expanse of a Broadway theatre to see High Button Shoes still lights up his face many decades later.

“I’ve been a subscriber almost as long as I’ve been married.” Murray met his wife, Gail, in ninth grade. They were married after graduating from UCLA and will be happily celebrating their 49th anniversary in June. The couple shares an appreciation for the arts with their family: their daughter, Dena, and son-in-law, Jay; their son, Jay, and daughter-in-law, Fatima; and their grandchildren, Max and Zeki.

Gail and Murray Heltzer.

“Volunteering with CTG gives me an opportunity to give back to something that has given me joy over the years.”

The day after Murray retired last year, he called Center Theatre Group’s deputy director of development, Patrick Owen, to discuss volunteering at CTG. As longtime subscribers and donors, Murray and Gail have met several CTG staff members and artists at the organization’s events over the years. These opportunities, he says, allowed him to see the impact of his support firsthand, and he was eager to do more. Since that phone call, Murray has become a member of CTG’s development team, bringing more than 50 years of legal and financial industry experience to his role as an administrative volunteer, and assisting staff with a variety of donor cultivation activities. His professional and positive demeanor is a welcome and valuable presence in our offices, where his appreciation and understanding of the current theatre landscape is quite evident. When asked about recent memorable theatre experiences, he said he enjoyed CTG’s production of Tribes, particularly its inventive use of the stage and its projections with words and images. What excites him most, however, is seeing new plays and new voices brought to the stage in Los Angeles.

“There are just so many young, good writers.” Though a classic Broadway musical sparked his love of live theatre, his appetite for new work and his positive outlook on the future of the theatrical form deeply inspires all of us at CTG. n

Director Phylicia Rashad discusses August Wilson’s work.

Phylicia Rashad Discovers the Heart of an August Wilson Masterpiece Director Phylicia Rashad’s marathon day of rehearsal would end at midnight — just one more in her deepening relationship with August Wilson’s work. In a few short days, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone would begin previews before opening to critical acclaim at the Mark Taper Forum, but for now the focus was on the playwright: his lyrical language and his unique understanding of the human soul in all its complex variations. Rashad was speaking to Center Theatre Group donors during her dinner break at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, where the company of Joe Turner had ventured to meet their patrons. Hosted by Artists & Educators Forum member Vicki King, the event celebrated Wilson’s legacy — his 10-play Century Cycle chronicling AfricanAmerican life in the 1900s. This achievement, Rashad said, earned Wilson the sort of reverence typically reserved for Shakespeare or the Greeks.

“I had seen productions of this play before, but when I began to read it, just putting everything else out of my mind, I could hardly get through the first few pages,” Rashad said. “I laughed so hard I thought I must be getting this wrong.” But playing Aunt Ester in Gem of the Ocean taught her firsthand that Wilson’s moves as a writer were always intentional.

“Every day is a discovery for us — certainly for me — about this play, about what it is, and what it holds …”

“When we talk about contemporary playwrights, it’s ‘you know, the actors can do a little ad lib here, a little breath or run over there.’ You don’t want to do that with this writing. If a word is dropped, if a word is changed, even if the audience doesn’t know it, you feel it … there was something that was missing.”

With the ultimate goal of honoring Wilson’s timeless language, Rashad began rehearsals determined to let her amazing company of actors and the perfect script become her “teachers.” Together, they learned about the Great Migration of the early 20th century, when many African-Americans traveled north searching for opportunity and a place where they could live, laugh and love with dignity. In Joe Turner, these journeys converge at the Holly boardinghouse, where Wilson’s characters reveal themselves through layers of pathos and unexpected humor.

“He would come into the rehearsal room, and he would sit very, very quietly, and he would close his eyes,” Rashad said. “It would look like he was sleeping, but he wasn’t. … He was listening. And then the next day he’d come back in … and a passage that had been two pages long would be condensed to a phrase, and within that phrase there would be the entire experience of what had been written in two pages the day before. It was amazing.” Rashad encouraged her cast to lose themselves in Wilson’s poetic text, which in her view perfectly captured the rhythms of his characters’ hearts. When you fall into his rhythms, she said, the character becomes real, and “acting” goes away.

“Every day is a discovery for us — certainly for me — about this play, about what it is, and what it holds … how it sings and how it dances,” she said. “But always, beneath all of these things, is coming to understand in a clearer fashion the playwright’s intention. That is manna from heaven.”

Center Theatre Group is grateful to Artists & Educators Forum member Vicki King for making this memorable event possible and to the company of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone for sharing this experience with our donors. n

CTG Honors 5 Innovative Theatre Educators Center Theatre Group donors gathered May 8 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to celebrate the opening of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and five extraordinary Los Angeles teachers. CTG Board member Diane Morton and Stan Fineman.

CTG’s director of Education and Community Partnerships, Leslie K. Johnson, introduced guests to the 2013 Theatre Educator Fellows, who will each receive a stipend that supports their professional development and artistic revitalization. This year’s honorees — Alicia Wollerton, David Levine, Elizabeth Rubino, Juan Carrillo and Melissa Weber Bales — will each receive up to $5,000 to explore how theatre might help students achieve academic goals, whether using sketch comedy to reduce bullying or rehearsal techniques to teach dramatic literature.

Dorothy Mason, CTG Corporate Circle member Aja Elyce Baker and April Blue.

The educators each received trophies commemorating their achievement. The director of Joe Turner, Phylicia Rashad, then made a surprise appearance to discuss the show and her personal connection to August Wilson’s work. She acknowledged the five educators for their important role in bringing arts education to their students. “I began my experience in theatre as a child in the public schools of Houston, Texas, because of people just like the ones you’ve honored here tonight,” she said. After Rashad’s moving remarks, donors walked to the Mark Taper Forum to see the opening performance of this iconic drama.

Rainbow Cast Adds Color to Artistic Director’s Circle Event On Sunday, April 7, visitors to Maggy and Jack Simon’s home found their own special pot of gold when the End of the Rainbow cast dropped by to meet members of Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Director’s Circle. Donors and performers mingled throughout the late spring afternoon, enjoying tray-passed hors d’oeuvres and a live band playing outdoors. Maggy and Jack Simon chat with Tracie Bennett after she gives an impromptu performance at their home.

They later moved to a tented setting, where the cast, including understudies, participated in a talkback with CTG Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. Ritchie began by explaining that End of the Rainbow wasn’t initially a story about Judy Garland. Tracie Bennett, who had worked in repertory theatre for 30 years, had auditioned for a play about an aging musical theatre artist who had difficulty performing. “The audience kept saying that there was a Judy Garland thing that was echoing within them,” Bennett said, as she explained how the audience’s reaction helped shape the production.

Michael Ritchie with Artistic Director’s Circle members Laura and Jamie Rosenwald.

As the Los Angeles cast began rehearsal, they acknowledged that their reactions to the evolving script weren’t immediately positive. “I discovered that there’s something about it that works better onstage than on the page,” said Michael Cumpsty, who played Anthony. “There is something about it that transcends the page purely in terms of its dramatic structure.” Later in the evening, the discussion explored how audiences received End of the Rainbow in different cities. “In England, we don’t have legends and icons like you do,” Bennett said. “This show was in England with an all-English cast … you didn’t get the Jersey thing. How would they know?” The cast agreed that Los Angeles audiences seemed to understand the production best. The evening concluded with hostess Maggy Simon and Tracie Bennett singing a duet of Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland’s unforgettable performance of “Get Happy” and “Happy Days Are Here Again.” n

This Artistic Director’s Circle event was unique in that every cast member, including understudies, attended the event. Several of the cast shared their opinions about the importance of the understudy. “A lot of the job consists of sitting on your ass reading books. But when someone is sick, god forbid … you have to kick it into gear and be ready to perform,” said Gregory Linington, understudy for the role of Mickey Deans.

“They are the unsung heroes. They really are. … It means everything to us to know that it’s safe in their hands,” said Tracie Bennett. “Michael’s role is really difficult because he really gives two performances. He has a performance that he is speaking with Tracie and he has a performance at the piano. … I’ve had to learn what he learns in addition to what he says at the piano. It’s been a healthy and fun challenge,” said Mark Capri, understudy for Anthony.

When Opposites Create An Interview with Anna D. Shapiro by Lynne Heffley

“If you knew in advance exactly what was going to happen in your life, and how everything was going to turn out, and if you knew you couldn’t do anything to change it, would you still want to go on with your life?” —Bee, in A Parallelogram by Bruce Norris

in the darkly comic environs

of his domestic drama A Parallelogram, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park) raises large questions about the reality that we create for ourselves in order to live our lives, and about our vulnerability to cracks in that reality. Is Bee, the young woman in Norris’ play, truly receiving visitations and visions from a foreboding future? If so, can she change her destiny and live with the far-reaching consequences? Or is something entirely different going on?

The answers won’t be given away here. Audience members must decipher the signposts for themselves in this head-spinning narrative, written by a playwright known for the ferocity and wit of his politically incorrect subject matter — racism, child abuse, hypocrisy on the right and the left, the base truths that lurk beneath society’s civilized veneer. (“There are no pure acts, no altruistic gestures, and certainly no heroes in Norris’s theatrical world,” wrote Tony Adler in Chicago magazine. “He is the bard of unintended consequences — every attempt to do right becomes its own punishment and nobody but nobody comes away untainted.”)

“You tend to get that label if you’re writing about the people who are sitting in the audience — writing about them, rather than for them,” she said. Not that Norris spares himself from his expertly incised societal exposés. He is “very aware of who his audience is,” Shapiro says. “And he is a member of that audience.” A Parallelogram, with its unsettling view of existence, can be seen as something of a departure, however, in part, because unlike Norris’ previous social satires, A Parallelogram is “more about love, than life and death,” Shapiro said.

Shapiro has been the apparent yin to Norris’ yang.

Norris’ work has been presented at the Mark Taper Forum, Playwrights Horizons, Lookingglass Theatre, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Staatstheater Mainz

“Provocateur” is an apt description of Norris’ role as playwright, said Anna D. Shapiro, who directed the 2010 premiere run of A Parallelogram at noted Chicago-based theatre company Steppenwolf, and who is helming Center Theatre Group’s current remounting of the play at the Mark Taper Forum.

“So much of what happens in Parallelogram is about human foibles around love and wanting to be good and do right. I think everyone can identify with that. And watching stuff fail,” she added, “can sometimes be just as funny as it is heartbreaking.”

and at other theatres in the United States and Europe, but Steppenwolf is the mother ship. Most of Norris’ plays — The Infidel, Purple Heart, We All Went Down to Amsterdam, The Pain and the Itch, The Unmentionables and A Parallelogram — have premiered there. Shapiro directed nearly all of them. (Norris’ Pulitzer, Tony and Olivier-winning Clybourne Park came to the Mark Taper Forum in 2011 after its off-Broadway premiere at Playwrights Horizons and before its Broadway run. Los Angeles Times theatre critic Charles McNulty called that skewering of middle class race relations, a “smart, abrasively funny and fiendishly provocative play.”) A Steppenwolf ensemble member who won the 2008 Tony Award for her direction of the company’s production of Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County, and who heads the Graduate Directing program at Northwestern University, Shapiro has been the

apparent yin to Norris’ yang. Her close creative partnership with Norris began in 1995 when she founded Steppenwolf’s New Play Lab, where Norris “kind of relaunched himself” as a playwright, she said. Norris’ vocabulary as a playwright “is getting ever wider, and that’s exciting,” Shapiro said, “because he has great and interesting ideas and I like watching him apply them to different scenarios.” Encompassing Norris’ hallmark linguistic twists and turns, those scenarios are notably varied. In addition to Clybourne Park’s satiric riff on Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and A Parallelogram’s time-bending construct, they include, in part, exploitation and illusory American benevolence in small-town Africa (The Unmentionables), a family’s unspeakable secrets (the controversial The Pain and the Itch) and a dissection of love and loss with a razor edge (Purple Heart).

August: Osage County, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, at the Ahmanson Theatre.

Whatever the subject matter, getting a Norris play from the page to the stage can be challenging for a director, Shapiro said, referring to the playwright’s active involvement in the rehearsal process. “A lot of the time, a director might be anxious about having the writer in the room because it messes with their authority,” she said. “And in a certain sense it does…and it should. Because the original voice matters and that should be part of the conversation. Once we have figured out through that conversation what [Norris is] trying to do,” she said, “the arc of rehearsal is usually conversations about what does that thing better. “The dust ups — and there’s nothing wrong with a good dust up here and there,” Shapiro said, “are about what accomplishes that better, what human behavior tells the audience that story better. And because Bruce and I are really different as human beings, that’s when we have the most fertile and interesting and sometimes volatile conversations.”

(“Oh, you can’t shut me up. I’m like a secondary director,” said Norris in an interview with American Conservatory Theater artistic associate Beatrice Basso, reposted by Theatre Communications Group. Because of his work with Shapiro, he said, “I just got very comfortable shooting my mouth off in rehearsals.”) A Norris play can present unusual challenges for actors as well, and that is true of A Parallelogram, with its wild, loop-de-loop, existentialist narrative. “Gosh, yes,” Shapiro said. “All of his plays have a challenging rhythm.” Usually, she said, when an actor looks at a script and sees “a large block of language that belongs to them, it means ‘I start in one place and end up in a different place.’” In a Norris play, she said, a character can start in one place and take “a very long circuitous route all the way back to the place they started, as lost as they were when they began.”

“A lot of the time, a director might be anxious about having the writer in the room because it messes with their authority. And in a certain sense it does… and it should.” — Anna D. Shapiro

Norris uses language “to communicate paralysis,” Shapiro observed. “Most dramatists use language to communicate motion. And that is just a really, really different way to use your muscles as an actor. It can be maddening until you figure it out.” What resonates with Shapiro most keenly in Norris’ plays, “what makes me want to come back,” she said, is that like the fiercely observant playwright, Shapiro is intrigued by the “kind of emotional paralysis” that Norris explores, and by his recurring themes that echo her own interest in “who we say we are, versus what we actually do.

photos by craig schwartz.

“I’m interested in the genuine crises and pain that that contradiction engenders in people and in a society,” Shapiro said, “and I think that I like being in a world where those questions and contradictions are being pressed.” Premiere productions of two more Norris plays are slated for this year: The Low Road at the Royal Court Theatre in London and Domesticated at Lincoln Center Theater. l to r:

Finding His Voice:

Lopez Takes Second at National August Wilson Monologue Competition

Pablo Lopez performs at the Los Angeles regional finals of the August Wilson Monologue Competition.

“I want people to know … that it’s worth fighting for your voice,” said Pablo Lopez, who placed second in the national August Wilson Monologue Competition on May 6 at Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre. After placing first at the regional finals at the Mark Taper Forum, he traveled to New York In the company of his fellow Los Angeles finalists, Rhyver White and Eliana Pipes, to deliver a powerful interpretation of Harmond Wilks from Wilson’s Radio Golf. His success at the national competition culminated a twoyear relationship with Center Theatre Group’s August Wilson Monologue Competition, through which he became an avid fan of the playwright’s works and themes.

CTG Affiliates Rorrie Zane, Linda Goldman, Marilyn Stambler and Diane Neubauer applaud participants in the August Wilson Monologue Competition at the Los Angeles regional finals.

that winning is ultimately less important than coming together as a community of performers.

Memories From the Los Angeles National Finalists

“The August Wilson Monologue Competition made my dreams come true. I got to perform on the Taper stage. I’m still floored by that fact.” —Eliana Pipes “I have never been surrounded by so many talented, driven people before, which made it seem less and less like a competition. ... We all came together to honor a legend in theatre.” —Rhyver White

“I’ve been around people who have not been able to share their voices,” said Lopez. “At the corner of my street … there’s like 10 homeless people who [sic] nobody knows. And I’m grateful for August Wilson to show that everyone’s voice is important.” Lopez’s sentiments echoed the value of ensemble building that characterizes the August Wilson Monologue Competition, which teaches students

Moments before Lopez earned first place at the regional finals, he received the Ensemble Award for his collaborative spirit, an essential quality to the theatre community. His fellow regional finalists selected him for this distinction. Lopez recently graduated from the Ramón C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts and plans to pursue a degree in business, diplomacy or foreign culture at the University of California, Davis. He aspires to help developing countries thrive.

This was CTG’s second year as the Southern California home for the national competition. CTG values the voices of all 86 students from 31 schools and 29 cities who participated this year. CTG’s August Wilson Program, which includes inschool residencies and the monologue competition, empowers students of all backgrounds to find their voices and to connect with Wilson’s works. “It was incredible.” Carol B. Pearson recalls the moment she held the first published folio of Shakespeare’s plays. Access to this rare book was but one of many great thrills of assisting scholars at The Huntington Library for the last 50 years. And when it came time to retire, it was access to all the delights of Pasadena – the museums, theatres and bookstores – that attracted Carol to Villa Gardens, a full-service retirement community that takes care of the mundane, so you can pursue the extraordinary.

A love of books transported her through the ages.

A love of Pasadena led her to Villa Gardens.
