KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE
Jun 18–Jul 16, 2023
PRODUCED IN ASSOCIATION WITH SPRINGHILL
In the days leading up to one of Cassius Clay’s most anticipated fights, the heavyweight boxing champion forms an unlikely friendship with the controversial Hollywood star Stepin Fetchit. With a rhythmic script by award-winning performer and playwright Will Power and direction by Emmy Award® winner, Debbie Allen, Fetch Clay, Make Man explores the improbable bond that forms between two drastically different and influential cultural icons. This true story is as powerful and poetic as Clay himself, while also humorous and irreverent like Fetchit’s signature act.

“ JOYOUS PHYSICAL COMEDY AND DISASTER!”
IT TAKES TWO
By Jessica Doherty —Stephanie J. BlockSebastian Arcelus and Stephanie J. Block’s love for theatre is rather literal. Not only are they two renowned actors, but they have become a powerful team as husband and wife, both offstage and onstage in Into the Woods at the Ahmanson Theatre this month.
“We are living the word ‘marriage’ in the truest sense,” Stephanie said.
Stephanie and Sebastian met during the first national tour of Wicked, where they played Elphaba and Fiyero, respectively. Stephanie was fresh out of a 10-and-a-half-year relationship, but Sebastian called his mom just a few days into their relationship to say that he had found the one. After the tour, Stephanie realized what an “extraordinary human” Sebastian was, and that was that. A lot of life has happened between then and now—they are celebrating their 16th year of marriage and have an 8-year-old daughter together, who has joined them on this tour.

“We are living the word ‘marriage’ in the truest sense.”
While The Baker and The Baker’s Wife seek to start a family, Stephanie J. Block and Sebastian Arcelus bring theirs on the road.(l-r) Stephanie J. Block and Sebastian Arcelus in the Broadway production of Into the Woods . Photo by Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman.
continued from page 7
Stephanie said that touring as a family is “not for the faint of heart.” Between the logistics of packing, traveling, and homeschooling their daughter before shows, their days often start early and end late. But the source material makes it worth all the while.
Into the Woods is the acclaimed musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, which has previously graced the stage at Center Theatre Group in 1989, 2002, and 2017. Sebastian plays The Baker, while Stephanie plays The Baker’s Wife. The two venture into the woods to break the curse upon their family so that they can have a child. Stephanie said that these two roles, “resonate with us in such a deep and meaningful way—these two characters, working hard to have a child—that was our story.”
Sebastian said that Stephanie describes The Baker as “a mirror and a window” into himself and his anxieties and hopes. Stephanie feels The Baker’s Wife is a beautifully flawed warrior who is tempted, but, ultimately, sacrifices for her family.
The lines between life offstage sometimes blur with the character’s life onstage. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The two already know what has happened during their day before the show. The work and “sweet agony” of living feeds into the work onstage.
“He covers me. He protects me. He pours love, lifts me up, and makes it work,” Stephanie said of Sebastian.
This is often done without words—a worried glance when a cart hits her leg, or a squeeze of the hand to signal that they want to cut a note off early together.
The chemistry between them is palpable. Even when glimpsing at them through a shared Zoom call window, the two look at each other with an incredibly clear sense of care. Stephanie said the audience often comments on their chemistry in the show.
“Of course, it is woven into the fabric of who we are as people,” she said. “It is literally decades in the making and 10 minutes fresh before we
step on stage—so they’re getting our whole story in the language of Lapine and Sondheim.”
At times, they’ve been encouraged to tone down their affections onstage, to better reflect the couple’s growth and connection over the story.
“Act One of Into the Woods is individual journeys— we’re all going for our specific thing, goal, wish,” Sebastian said. “Act Two, this group is now working as a team, a collaboration, a unit. Making art again...it is about work[ing] together to make something happen.”
This production’s timing was serendipitous for their family, after the isolation and challenge during the pandemic on theatre and education and the ideal time in their daughter’s life. The tour has allowed their daughter to experience the culture and history across the United States and find a new sense of community in the company.
“The company has embraced our child and touched me as a mother in ways I can’t explain,” Stephanie said. “She has been welcomed in so many beautiful ways and the way she recognizes how she belongs is such a beautiful thing for an eight-year-old.” Their daughter has her own dressing room, costume, and makeup, and company members have even joined her in her interests—like a Pokémon trading card party. Los Angeles is the last stop of the engagement, which makes the performance for both Stephanie and Sebastian even sweeter. “[We’re] savoring this extraordinary experience in an extraordinary place,” Stephanie said. “It’s all baked in there.”
For Stephanie, who grew up in Southern California, returning to the Ahmanson Theatre is like returning home. She grew up attending shows at Center Theatre Group and has performed there previously in productions like 9 to 5 before its Broadway run. “Talk about hallowed ground, [Center Theatre Group] was a temple for me,” Stephanie said. “This is the genesis of who I am.”
As for their daughter, Stephanie said her first show at the Ahmanson Theatre, “will be seeing her mom and dad on stage.”
“The company has embraced our child and touched me as a mother in ways I can’t explain...she has been welcomed in so many beautiful ways and the way she recognizes how she belongs is such a beautiful thing for an eight-year old.”
“[We’re] savoring this extraordinary experience in an extraordinary place,” Stephanie said. “It’s all baked in there.”
DUKING IT OUT Will Power
Debbie Allen & WITH
By Jessica DohertyFetch Clay, Make Man started with a photograph of Muhammad Ali and Stepin Fetchit in the window of Oakland’s Afrocentric bookstore, Marcus Books.
“You need plays and movies to explore one aspect of Muhammad Ali’s life,” Playwright Will Power said. “Muhammad Ali is just one of those epic figures, and here’s a chapter that people don’t really know much about.”
Fetch Clay, Make Man is about the unlikely friendship between champion boxer Muhammad Ali and actor Stephin Fetchit. Allen finds that the play is a “wonderful exploration” of not only these two men, but of the sociopolitical spirit of the times they lived through.
Muhammad Ali, formerly known as Cassius Clay, was one of the most recognized and lauded figures of boxing, winning gold in the 1960 Summer Olympics. Stepin Fetchit was a Hollywood actor in the 1930s, and one of the first African Americans to become a millionaire. But he was a controversial figure—he often played harmful and stereotypical roles in white films, and, by the 1960s, his career was over. While Ali was on the rise, he and Fetchit became friends.
Their relationship serves as a testament to the complexities of the Black experience in Hollywood and sports. The play also touches upon the racial justice movement of the 60s, especially after the assassination of Ali’s former friend, Malcom X.
Power also said that the entire play feels like a “chessboard with only kings and queens” because of how each character has a certain level of notability and depth. This comparison applies to the production’s company as well, with Debbie Allen at the helm directing film and television stars Ray Fisher, Edwin Lee Gibson, and Alexis Floyd.
Allen has had a prolific career that has spanned decades on both stage and screen. As an actress, she starred as Anita in West Side Story and won a Golden Globe for her role as Lydia Grant in Fame. She is not only a recurring role as Dr. Catherine Fox on Grey’s Anatomy, but an Executive Producer of the show as well. As a choreographer, she has worked with stars like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Lena Horne, Dolly Parton, and more. And Allen has directed episodes of hit televison shows like Insecure, Scandal, and Empire. Her sister, Phylicia Rashad, directed Blues for an
The duo are working together to tell the story of two unlikely friends at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
Alabama Sky at the Mark Taper Forum last season. Now, it’s Allen’s turn to direct at the Kirk Douglas Theatre with Fetch Clay, Make Man.
Allen actually met Ali when she was younger, when she and her mother attended one of his first poetry readings in Houston, Texas. “What I remember the most was the excitement of everyone when he walked into the room,” she said. “And I remember drinking champagne, when no one was looking!”
A core component of the play is rhythm. Power’s background in rap and classical verse influences his work greatly— and is part of the reason why he is considered one of the founding writers of hip-hop theatre. Dance serves as a metaphor and reality for boxers, as they “dance” about to not get hit.
Allen agrees, and her proximity to the worlds of dance and sports helps her draw that connection further. Her husband is former NBA Lakers player Norman Nixon, and the two run the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Los Angeles, which trains students ages four and up.
Despite taking place in the past, both Power and Allen feel that Fetch Clay, Make Man speaks to audiences in the present. “Fetch Clay, Make Man deals with sexism, racism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam,” she said. “With the divisiveness going on in our country right now, it speaks to the challenges...for people who are considered minorities, who are on the rise.”
Power, too, finds that Fetch Clay, Make Man is timeless, despite taking place in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1960s. “It deals with...public persona—who is that person or those personas that you want [the public] to see and what are the complexities in all of us?”
Allen finds that Ali, especially, speaks to the ever-changing political climate. Ali was known for trash-talking during his matches, often pushing the limits of his opponents. Allen said he is similar to the ways people on both sides of the political spectrum are pushing against the status quo.
“People are walking lines of political correctness on one side, and blatantly tearing them down on the other,” she said. “It’s a great American saga, if you will. Come [to Fetch Clay, Make Man] ready to share and learn.”
“Fetch Clay, Make Man deals with sexism, racism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam...With the divisiveness going on in our country right now, it speaks to the challenges...for people who are considered minorities, who are on the rise.”
—Debbie Allen
with Stephanie J. Block
The Tony Award-winning actress shares the itinerary of her perfect weekend in SoCal.
By Jessica DohertyStephanie J. Block is returning home to Southern California, where she was born and raised, for the final stop of the exclusive engagement of Into the Woods. We asked her what her ideal weekend in Southern California would look like with her family— when it’s between “72 to 75 degrees without rain the entire time,” of course.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Saturday
We’re going to Disneyland, y’all! We’re doing Disneyland as a family. The first thing we always do is we ‘jump’ into Disney. We close our eyes, and we go, “woosh!” and we pretend like we’re kids again. My first ride is always It’s a Small World. Second, we’ll go on something fast—probably Space Mountain. Then we’ll go to Carnation Plaza, and we’ll do snacky-snacks, whether that’s a big-ass pickle or popcorn, maybe [my daughter] will get cotton candy. She’ll probably want a snack again, so we’ll get a Dole Whip and go to the Tiki Room to sit for a hot second. And we’ll be trading pins the entire time there. And then we’d do Pirates of the Caribbean, and Haunted Mansion. Then, Haunted Mansion again because she shut her eyes the whole time. Then Splash Mountain, then watch a parade, and figure it out from there. I’d love to stay at the Disney resort Saturday night.
Friday
We’re going to wake up at Shutters on the Beach Hotel in Santa Monica. We’re going to have a delicious breakfast or brunch on the beach, get our feet in the sand, and poke around and collect shells. And then we might do a little shopping. I’m going to take them to El Coyote and have Mexican food—legit Mexican food. Then we would go back to the beach and spend the night.
Sunday
We’d do something a little quieter on Sunday, like visiting friends. We’d have people meet us at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Gardens in Pasadena, where there are such gorgeous gardens and art, for a low-key sitch. And then we’d have to get [our daughter’s] wiggles out. So, we’d take her to a great park. Somehow, we’ve got to get to Laguna Beach, where Sebastian can try to learn to surf.
