Do we need more sunshine in Southern California? Always! What we really want is more of the optimistic sunshine that Little Orphan Annie brings to everyone she meets. Just when we need her, Annie comes to the Center in February. It’s one of the best-loved musicals of all time and now it’s arriving in a new production, but it’s still just as you remember it. What a great way to start the new year.
“It’s one of the best family musicals ever penned,” says the Chicago Tribune Broadwayworld.com agrees, saying, “Annie wraps up everything good about humanity into a beautiful gift given to generation after generation.”
“This production is an extremely satisfying revival,” says onstagecolorado.com. “Annie shows no sign of aging. It’s a highly polished production that will appeal to both young and not-so-young theatergoers.”
Annie is the always-hopeful orphan living in a gruesome, horrendous orphanage during the Depression years. It’s run by the malevolent Mrs. Hannigan, but Annie dreams of her parents— who she is sure are still alive—coming to rescue her. Annie is chosen to spend Christmas with the extremely rich “Daddy” Warbucks, who she asks to find her parents, and he puts up a large reward for information. Returning to the orphanage, Annie is now the target of criminals connected to Miss Hannigan who hope to kidnap Annie and claim the reward, but they are found to be fakes and arrested. Although Annie discovers her parents passed away when she was a baby, everything ends happily when Daddy Warbucks misses the fun and joy she brought to his home and adopts her.
“There are showstoppers aplenty, easy on the ears and eyes thanks in part, respectively, to a marvelous live orchestra conducted by Andrew David Sotomeyer and choreographer Patricia Wilcox,” says the Chicago Sun-Times. “Wilcox’s choreography delivers one gem after another. The percussive stomping of ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’ is an all-orphan banger.”
This has always been a great show to enjoy with family. “The opening night crowd was full of families, some with rather small children, and
they gave a positive energy to watching the show,” says MusicCityReview.com. “A small part of the musical that got a huge reaction was the presence of a dog, Seamus, to play the part of Sandy, Annie’s rescue. The entire audience made a huge ‘awww’ sound when he appeared, and every interaction with him always got applause.” Good dog!
Little Orphan Annie originated as cartoon strip serial in 1924. She has aged well, but what does Annie do when she grows up? This production is directed by Jenn Thompson, who played one of the orphans in the original 1977 Broadway production. She acted alongside the original Annie, Andrea McArdle. McArdle received a Tony nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her role as the title character, but she lost to her co-star, Dorothy Loudon, who played Miss Hannigan. McArdle’s career as a singer and actress continues to this day.
Probably the most famous Broadway Annie is Sarah Jessica Parker, who went on to have success in a little television series called Sex and the City. It seems like her television character might have been channeling a bit of Annie as “Carrie Bradshaw,” who seemed to find the best in everyone.
Annie remains a celebration of family, optimism and the American spirit, the ultimate cure for all the hard knocks life throws your way. Don’t wait until “Tomorrow,” it’s time to get tickets for Annie today.

Alonzo King’s new interpretations
Alonzo King LINES Ballet returns to the Center to share its artistry and creative expression. King created the company with the mission and purpose of touching hearts and stirring minds through dance, and he collaborates with composers, musicians and visual artists who share his passion to connect audiences and alter the way we look at ballet today.
“The talent, the expertise and the intent of this stellar company is incomparable!” says Broadwayworld.com. “The technique of every member of the company, with every movement they make, will fill you with awe.” The New York Times praises the “astonishing originality” of King’s vision.
There are two works being presented; both
are Southern California premieres.
King has been mesmerized by Alice Coltrane’s music since he was a child—he choreographed one of his very first pieces to her work. He now returns to her body of work to create Ode to Alice Coltrane as part of “The Year of Alice,” a nationwide tribute to her legacy.
Coltrane was an American jazz musician, composer, bandleader and, later, a Hindu spiritual leader. She was married to famed saxophonist John Coltrane for four years until his death. Alice joined in John’s quartet just as jazz music was shifting from existing conventions and reaching for new ideas. That suited Alice, who was experimental with her music. She was an accomplished pianist but didn’t hesitate to incorporate other instruments: Who else used

a full-sized harp in jazz? “The music is in your heart, your soul, your spirit,” she said, and she personified that in her music and life.
The engagement will also feature King’s recent collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony. Here the LINES Ballet dancers delve into the enchanting world of Maurice Ravel’s 1912 suite Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose), infusing the musical storyscape with a new interpretation. “I’m not trying to recreate Mother Goose fairy tales,” says King. “My intention is to unearth the deeper allegorical meanings beneath the fairy tales and illustrate those with dance.”
The celebrated contemporary dance company has been guided since 1982 by the unique artistic vision of King. He creates performances that alter the way we look at ballet today. More than four decades of outstanding, multi-disciplinary collaborations for the stage place LINES Ballet at the forefront of artistic innovation in ballet. King’s unique artistic vision adheres to the classical form with a commitment to cultural collaborations which enthrall audiences and draw on diverse traditions with new expressive potential.
Beautiful and glorious on stage, this is a must-see performance for Center dance fans.

Claybourne Elder: “You have to have talent and luck”
Anyone who wants to make it on Broadway will be performing in a Stephen Sondheim production at some point. For Claybourne Elder, that opportunity came early in his theatrical career when he got a part in Road Show, an early Sondheim musical. That led to more Sondheim productions, including three different productions of Sunday in the Park with George, Passion, Sondheim and Sondheim, and Company with Patti LuPone. He has been in nine professional productions of a Sondheim musical, putting him firmly in the Sondheim club.
For his Center Cabaret Series appearance, Elder will almost certainly include some of the Sondheim hits as well as favorites from the Great American Songbook. In If the Stars Were Mine he’ll also share stories about being a gay, ex-Mormon dad and partner, as well as adventures in theater land. It’s sort of part cabaret and part stand up.
“Performing in cabaret is truly one of my favorite things,” Elder told broadwayworld.com. “Getting the chance to be with an audience, to
talk and joke with them live is so thrilling, scary and fulfilling.”
Elder was raised in Utah in the Mormon church, and at home he and his brother, who is also gay, liked to put on musicals for their siblings. He performed in one or two musicals in high school (as well as playing a hedgehog in a third grade play) and also spent a lot of time watching old movie musicals from the 1940s and ’50s, which his mother rented for him.
Elder attended BYU until he was asked to leave because of his sexual orientation. As he stepped back from the church, he moved to University of Utah and earned a degree in dramaturgy and directing. He then took some time traveling the real world before returning to New York City to conquer the Broadway world.
“To ‘make it’ in New York theater really means having an unlikely crossing of talent and luck,” says Elder. “Everyone at auditions is talented.” But Elder had that incredible luck, and no shortage of real talent. A review in britishtheatre.com comments on “Elder’s fine, mellifluous vocals …”
It wasn’t long before Elder was starring in Broadway productions and television series. Perhaps you saw him recently in The Gilded Age? (Think Downton Abbey in 1880s New York City.)
In his cabaret shows he can sometimes be a bit risqué, but Elder says his “risqué” is much lighter than many actors. “Having been raised a gee-golly-willikers Mormon kid just stuck with me,” he says.
“I love Broadway and performing on a big stage, but it’s so nice to have moments that are in contrast with those times. Smaller performances are where you can connect on a much closer level.”
There is no question that Center cabaret audiences will happily connect with Elder.

Twyla Tharp: Celebrating decades in dance
Birthdays and anniversaries abound at the Center this season. In February we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Twyla Tharp Dance, the company founded by Tharp. The company will present a new piece danced to music by Philip Glass. It will also perform Tharp’s take on Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, one that the composer would probably approve of.
Growing up, Tharp’s mother put her in classes for just about everything. Piano, dance of all types, violin and viola, painting, shorthand, French and German. It was the dance that stuck with her. After college she joined Paul Taylor Dance Company but left two years later to start her own.
It was the “anything goes” ‘60s and Tharp was eager to demonstrate her choreographic talents. She was the first to create what was called “crossover ballet,” a mix of ballet technique with regular movements like walking and skipping, and modern dance. It was in Push Comes to Shove that she created what many believe to be the best example of crossover ballet. The piece starred Mikail Baryshnikov with a bowler hat in a dance that was groundbreaking and brought the mega-famous classical ballet dancer into the world of contemporary dance. The music is a mix of Mozart and rags by Scott Joplin, an interesting combination for the time.
Today, Tharp is considered one of the greatest dance artists of our time. She has been awarded a Kennedy Honor and a MacArthur Fellowship as well as a Tony Award. Her art goes
across the board, with films and Broadway shows showing off her work, and she has written several books.
For the Center, the company will present Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. This is another crossover piece that combines the beauty of this classical piece of music with dance that changes from ballet to jazz, to modern, with unexpected bits of social and street dance for good measure. The music tempos and styles change throughout, and the dancers are put through their paces but make every step look smooth and effortless.
The second piece is a reimagining of Glass’ Aguas da Amazonia. The score is augmented with new music and accompanied live by Chicago-based Third Coast Percussion, who perform on a unique collection of customdesigned percussion instruments. The music is very soft and melodic, perfectly suited to the bells and marimba sounds of this group.
This evening will showcase Tharp’s use of music, ballet and streetwise nonchalance that can be humorous and edgy, or lyrical and expressive. And it will certainly be different.
“The only thing I fear more than change is no change,” Tharp says. “I would rather not work than feel repetition is the order of the day. I have to feel that each thing I’ve learned I can push to another point next time.”

Quartet plus one
When is a quartet not a quartet? When it’s the Takács Quartet inviting an extra player to join for a quintet piece. In this case, the renowned cellist David Requiro joins the group for Schubert’s Cello Quintet in C Major. A longtime favorite ensemble of Segerstrom Center audiences, the quartet will also play works by Haydn and Britten.
It’s not unusual for a quartet to play a quintet with an invitation extended to an additional musician, but in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when this piece was composed, the viola was the favored extra instrument. This piece is the only quintet Schubert wrote in his short life. The question remains: Why did Schubert write for two cellos? According to Guide to Chamber Music, author Melvin Berger writes, “The explanation probably lies in the vastly expanded range of sonorities that Schubert was able to elicit from the two cellos, and which he exploits to the fullest, particularly in the ever-changing pairings and combinations of instruments.”
Unfortunately, Schubert died in 1828 two weeks after he finished composing the quintet and he never heard it played. It was forgotten and didn’t premiere until 1850.
Requiro is making a big sound in the classical music world. He’s winning competitions and has joined the faculty at University of Colorado at Boulder. He is also a co-founder of the Monterey Chamber Music Workshop. In 2018 he performed this Schubert piece with the Takács at Lincoln Center. “We could not contain our admiration between pieces … especially after the raucous scherzo which seemed to be enthusiastically and rhythmically driven by Requiro; he only let the vigor of the piece relent in his mournful and reluctant duet with his fellow cellist,” says picturethispost.com.
The world-renowned Takács Quartet is now entering its 50th anniversary season, and while the line-up of musicians has changed (only one original member remains), it continues to be a leading influence in chamber music. It was the first string quartet to be inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame and in 2021 won its fourth Gramophone Classical Music Award for Chamber Music.
The members of the Takács Quartet are Christoffersen Fellows and artists in residence at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The quartet members are also associate artists at London’s Wigmore Hall: They were the first string quartet to be awarded the prestigious Wigmore Hall Medal.
“What has always been one of the fascinations of the quartet’s interpretations is how their four musical personalities are always distinct yet combined into such an overwhelming whole,” says the Guardian, while BBC Music magazine concludes, “One thing is certain: You will not hear better string quartet playing anywhere in the world today.” What better reason to see—and hear—them again.

Working together for healthier communities
New year, new you. It’s the year you’ll go to the gym every day, make delicious—and nutritious—home-cooked meals, and finally finish that novel. We all start the year with high expectations. Many resolutions are made, but it can be hard to keep them. That’s why having a support system with a trusted partner can help you stay on track.
“We are honored to join Segerstrom Center in spreading the arts throughout Orange County. Collectively, we know that arts in all forms, be it enjoying Broadway musicals, admiring the ballet, or simply dancing in a class on the Plaza, can bring a smile to your face,” says John Stratman, senior director, communications and public relations for Kaiser Permanente Orange County. “Kaiser Permanente is proud to be the official Health and Wellness partner for Segerstrom Center for the Arts. I feel that the vision set forth by Henry and Hal to bring the arts to Orange County aligns perfectly with the vision of Kaiser Permanente, in improving the health of the communities we serve.”
Since the opening of the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza in 2017, the Center has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors to more than 400 free and low-cost events, including wellness workshops, movie nights, dance classes, family events, cultural festivals, and an annual summer concert series.
With the start of the new year, check out tips to stay healthy and mark your calendar for upcoming events at the Center to enjoy with your family and friends.
Get specific. Avoid generic resolutions, such as “work out more,” and instead set clear goals. “Work out more” then becomes “walk for 30 minutes, 4 times a week.”
Find a friend. Tell your friends and family about your goals and ask them for encouragement. Having a support system in place can be a great way to keep bad habits in check.
Root & Rise Yoga is a new series on the Plaza that will focus on yoga and restorative movement. Classes will be scheduled for the second Sunday of the month, April through June.
Tuesday Night Dance is fun, upbeat, and designed for all ages and abilities, with no dance experience required. It runs every Tuesday evening March through September and focuses on learning a different type of dance every month.
Summer Sounds is a free, all-ages, sunset concert series happening Friday nights in June and July. This specially curated program brings some of Southern California’s most unique and eclectic artists to the Plaza.
Segerstrom Center for the Arts’s partnership with Kaiser Permanente extends the Center’s mission and programing focused on wellness to our local community and beyond.

Share your love of the Center: become a Docent
When you love something, you’re keen to share it with others. Your favorite restaurant, favorite beach, favorite performing arts center…
At Segerstrom Center for the Arts, you can be part of the Center Docents, the volunteers who will show you one of their favorite places and bring the Center’s magic and history to life. From the Fire Bird sculpture and grand staircase in Segerstrom Hall to the Baccarat chandelier and Gillespie pipe organ in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, there’s a whole world to explore at the Center beyond the stage!
Michelle Foley joined the Center Docents in 2019 after being a guest on a tour of the concert hall.
“I love being a part of the docent team,” says Foley, who has children in high school and college. “I get such pleasure seeing the amazed expressions of our guests when they enter an empty theater or get to walk on stage. It is such a unique experience, and I find joy and happiness every time I get to tour with them!”
The Docents lead over 100 tours each year: That’s more than 2,000 guests! Docents engage with groups of all ages. It could be schoolchildren who ask how the scenery is put on stage, or a group of seniors who have attended shows for years and want to know more about the campus and how it has grown. We have foreign visitors to Orange County curious about our landmarks and homeschooled children who can use our campus tour for a lesson.
Join us in inspiring the next generation of performing arts lovers by becoming a Center Docent. Tours are primarily scheduled in the mornings, so daytime availability is essential. Each 90-minute tour includes several flights of stairs, so volunteers should be comfortable with a moderate level of physical activity. Our
next training session begins on January 27, 2025. Over six weekly sessions, new volunteers will learn to navigate the tour routes, memorize key information to confidently lead tours without notes, and lead a “graduation tour” on March 3.
“I was so afraid that I would not be able to learn all the information,” says Cindy Ramirez, who has been a Docent for 13 years. “But becoming a Docent has been one of the best things that I’ve ever done for myself.” When she and her daughter took a tour, their docent suggested to Ramirez that she might like to join the Docents. “I’ve made friends, have more confidence, and met so many wonderful people. Every tour is different because every show is different. It’s so exciting to see the sets, props, costumes and everything else that gets loaded in with each production.”
Along with regular membership meetings, volunteers enjoy a range of benefits, including social outings and luncheons, behind-thescenes information about the latest Broadway show or artist, priority insight into missionbased programming and upcoming education initiatives and community events. Docents also have opportunities to join field trips to other cultural venues. There is a great comradery among the Docents and long-time friendships have been made.
“The staff, our docent group, the security team, and especially our guests are part of the reason why I love volunteering at the Center. They make it feel like home,” says Ramirez
“I have always loved how the performing arts can touch my soul emotionally every single time I am in the audience,” says Foley. “Sharing a piece of my experience is a delight!”
