Center Theatre Group’s new Artistic Director looks to celebrate the Los Angeles community onstage in its next act.

What does Snehal Desai look forward to as he joins Center Theater Group as its third Artistic Director?

“We are in this incredibly multicultural city that has a rich history and legacy,” he said. “L.A. covers a large, diverse geographic region with many cultural enclaves embedded throughout. What we came to miss over the last few years are the spaces where all our different communities can come together in person. It is this opportunity to bring us all together through storytelling that celebrates our shared humanity that I look forward to the most as CTG’s next Artistic Director.”

As Snehal Desai joins Center Theatre Group, he hopes to explore what this means for the many communities and stories that can be found throughout the city. “How can we support local artists and uplift stories that are uniquely L.A.?,” is a question that has been top of mind for him as he makes his transition to CTG.

Desai is the first Artistic Director of color for Center Theatre Group and his experience as both a queer man and a person of color have helped him bring new perspectives to the institutions he has worked with. In all of his work, he thinks of the community it serves. “I view myself as a community builder through the arts and by producing artistic works that create a dialogue on the larger issues and questions of our times. What has brought me the most joy as an artistic leader is introducing audiences to artists whose work inspires, challenges, and moves us in new and innovative ways.”

He is assuming the helm of Center Theatre Group at an inflection point in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Desai believes that this is a critical time for the company to stay committed to programming and developing bold work that is responsive to the times we live in but also centers laughter, joy, and

community. “Whether you love musicals, classics, new works or more family-friendly shows, we will present a diverse body of work that we hope will appeal to all Angelenos whether you go to the theatre once a week, once a month, or once a year.”

Desai’s studies and work have since taken him across the country and overseas. He grew up in Pennsylvania, lived in Atlanta when he was an undergraduate at Emory University, lived in New Haven while attending the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University, and later worked in both New York and London. In 2013, he moved to Los Angeles and three years later became the Artistic Director of East West Players (EWP), the nation’s oldest and largest Asian American theatre company. Over his seven seasons at EWP, he produced and directed the Los Angeles premiere of Allegiance with George Takei in association with the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, critically acclaimed productions of Next to Normal and Assassins, and new works including Anna Moench’s Man of God and Inda Craig-Galván’s The Great Jheri Curl Debate He also led collaborations between East West Players and Center Theatre Group including Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord which was presented at the Kirk Douglas Theatre earlier this year as well as the world premiere of David Henry Hwang’s Soft Power in 2017.

“As a hyphenated American, what I have always been interested in is that collision—between eastern and western traditions that are embodied in us and our lives as Asian Americans,” he said.

While at East West Players, Desai and the company were “trying to break apart the monolith of the diaspora,” and “constantly asking ourselves, who have we not heard from our stage? Whose story has not been told and what communities have not been invited into our space?”

Compared to the theatre scenes in other regional markets, he finds that the close-knit nature of the Los Angeles theatre community allows the opportunity for more collaboration and cross-pollination of the audiences and artists from the myriad of companies. In addition to Center Theatre Group, he worked with Pasadena Playhouse, Rogue Artists Ensemble, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, The Robey Theatre Company, The Fountain Theatre, API Rise, the Japanese American Cultural Community Center, and TAIKOPROJECT.

Desai also finds that the city is becoming a hub for the intersections of many industries—especially with the expansion of film and television into streaming. And, in the coming years, those industries will only continue to grow along with the city’s global impact. Center Theatre Group’s 60th anniversary falls between the years in which Los Angeles will host the World Cup and the Summer Olympics and Paralympics.

“We are about to have the attention of the world focused on Los Angeles in the next few years,” Desai said. “I’m really excited for the ways we are going to uplift and celebrate L.A. and the honor and privilege it is to be an Angeleno.”

DEAR DIRECTORIAL DEBUT AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP

In Alexis Scheer’s Our Dear Dead Drug Lord , four high school girls find each other through the ‘Dead Leaders Club,’ in which they attempt to summon dead leaders, like Pablo Escobar, through seances and blood sacrifices in a treehouse. This group ends up being a pivotal way for these young women to cope with the grief and lack of control in their lives. For Lindsay Allbaugh, as a high schooler, she found her people while sneaking out of class and into the theatre department and staying after school to dance onstage to Cirque du Soleil and Broadway musicals while no one was watching.

“The theatre department was an escape from the horrors of high school,”” she reminisced. “I felt very alone until I found this group of overly dramatic and deliciously weird kids. We didn’t fit in anywhere else— this was the first time I felt like I could really, truly, be my full self.”

Our Dear Dead Drug Lord resonated with Allbaugh immediately. “There’s something inherently magical about the setting, about how Playwright Alexis Scheer puts us in that treehouse, and all the feelings of nostaliga and youthful possibility it implies, combined with the way that they speak to each other. It takes me right back to my high school days with my best friends and all of the deep feelings, angst, rage, and desire we were feeling,” she said.

Allbaugh is tapping into her high school experiences as she directs Our Dear Dead Drug Lord at the Kirk Douglas Theatre this summer. But she also brings with her the wisdom of her many years working in Los Angeles theatre, and right here at Center Theatre Group. The production will mark her directorial debut with the company—after 19 years of working here.

Allbaugh began working at Center Theatre Group as an assistant to the Managing Director. Outside of work, she became heavily involved in the 99seat theatre scene in Los Angeles. She joined the Elephant Theatre company, founded by alumni of California State University Long Beach, her alma mater, and became a Co-Artistic Director during her ten-year tenure there. She directed and produced work across Los Angeles, and eventually shadowed former Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. As an Associate Artistic Director, Allbaugh was able to bring her experience at Center Theatre Group and beyond together to start the Block Party program, in which companies from smaller theatres in Los Angeles would have their work produced at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

But it’s not as though Allbaugh’s high school self has ever really left—she believes a part of our teenage selves still lives in us all.

“I still have a little bit of that shyness or awkwardness that I had as a teenager, I still feel like I live within this group of ragtag thespians because in a sense, we’re all still some version of our younger selves,” she said.

The characters in Our Dear Dead Drug Lord are discovering the untapped power within themselves. Allbaugh finds this as another common experience of adolescence—laying claim to power after years of living by the established rules of family, school, and the world. Allbaugh herself had a brief Wiccan phase, which she feels was a way for her to try and “find my own voice and some control in my life.”

Allbaugh has always been drawn to stories about young people, especially young girls becoming women. She is particularly fascinated by what it means to wrangle with one’s identity, outside of the many external factors that can influence it.

“Society tells you what to do as a young girl, what you are and what you’re capable of,” Allbaugh said. “And you may feel differently inside about who you feel you are and what you are capable of.” There is also the added layer of how the patriarchy impacts our society and institutions which can help explain why these young women are so drawn to the male leaders their club attempts to resurrect.”

Allbaugh as a director and Scheer as a playwright ask the actors and audience alike to wonder about what happens when women tap into the dangerous parts of themselves suppressed by the patriarchy.

Although this play is set just 15 years ago, in 2008, Allbaugh considers this a period piece. The play’s characters have drastically different political views, illustrating the beginning of much of the political polarization seen in the United States today.

But despite this story being about adolescent experiences, the journey of self-discovery is lifelong.

Allbaugh said that these characters ask the audience a multitude of questions: “What does it look like to be feminine and brutal? What does feminist power, rage, and grief look like? And at what point do you, as an adult, start to think for yourself?”

No matter the age of the audience, Allbaugh finds that this play will frighten and shock everyone in the house. “What if the scary things in the world, are actually us?,” she said. “The monster under our bed is actually the monster inside of us.”

Blissfully boring and bra-less with my husband, Dan, and dog, Sagan. We’d go to Flour Bakery, the dog park, and an estate sale or three (we LOVE estate sales).

Have you ever encountered a ghost? Only once. She was a super friendly ghost in my apartment my sophomore year of college!

FARCES ON STAGE!

Deck the Halls with loose wires and falling hazards, Peter Pan Goes Wrong has officially opened here at the Ahmanson Theatre. The Mischief Company has our audiences cackling in their seats, but how do they do it?

Peter Pan Goes Wrong is a prime example of a farce, a comic dramatic piece that uses highly improbable situations, stereotyped characters, extravagant exaggeration, and violent horseplay. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and explore other farces that have shocked audiences at Center Theatre Group.

The Most Happy Fella (1991)

This musical tells the story of a blossoming romance between an older man and a younger woman using music and dance to move audiences through this musical comedy! When Tony makes a mail order marriage proposal, his bride-to-be mistakes the photo of a young, handsome foreman to be her intended husband. When she finds out the truth, their relationship is on course to end before it begins. But through the goodness that shines through him, Tony manages to enchant and win the love of his city bride.

THE MOLIÈRE COMEDIES: The School for Husbands AND The Imaginary Cuckold (2002)

This double-bill production gave audiences an inside look into the world of Molière in one jaw-dropping, laugh-inducing night. The first of the two, The School for Husbands follows the whacky suitors Sganarelle, who is controlling and overbearing of his intended wife-Isabella, and Arise, Sganarelle’s older brother who treats his intended wife Leonor more as an equal. The Imaginary Cuckold follows Sganarelle, who appears in many of Molière’s works. The story focuses on the consequences of jealousy and hasty assumptions in a series of misunderstandings and arguments that involve Sganarelle, his wife, and the young lovers, Celie and Lelie.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1971)

Though this was shown at the Ahmanson for some reason (picture it:“I’m gonna go watch A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum at the Mark Taper Forum!), this musical by the legendary Stephen Sondheim was inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright, Plautus. The show follows Pseudolus, a slave who attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. A farce wouldn’t be complete without the classics-puns, slamming doors, your typical mistaken identities-and A Funny Thing... surely delivers. The original 1962 Broadway production won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was later produced into a successful movie adaptation with the stage musical's original lead, Zero Mostel. Just be careful whenever you go and watch a production of the show, a funny thing could happen.

A Flea In Her Ear (1982)

This production marked the Taper’s 15th Anniversary Celebration and was a part of The Repertory Festival. The play was written by Georges Feydea in 1907, at the height of the Belle Époque era in France—characterized by optimism, peace, and economic prosperity. The show follows Raymonde Chandebise, who questions her husband’s fidelity. With the help of her old friend, Lucienne, she hatches a plan to forge a letter penned by an ‘anonymous admirer’, inviting her husband to a rendezvous at the Hotel Coq D’or. The show was first performed in Paris and was reviewed as “a piece for which we need to invent a new description” by critics, for it was so explosive and comedic that “the audience cannot catch their breath for even a second.”

Measure for Measure

(1985)

Often cited as one of Shakespeare’s iconic problem plays, Measure for Measure features comedic elements such as wordplay and irony, as well as tragic elements like executions and soliloquies, which has made it difficult to categorize the piece. The play features Duke Vincentio of Vienna, who steps out of public life to observe the city’s affairs under the governance of his deputy, who abuses the power of his office. Having originally been performed in 1604, the piece has been adapted into multiple forms of media and continues to be one of Shakespeare’s successes.

On Friday 8th May Robert Grove will take his 400 electric fans down on from the park to Cornley Retirement Home to perform an avant-garde twist on his one-man literal adaptation.

We would like to pay tribute to Nadia our ten-foot Nile crocodile who sadly passed away shortly after arriving in the UK during preparation for the production. When she arrived in the UK from her native country of Kenya she was loaded onto the back of a large wagon and driven through the night towards the rehearsal room when Nadia arrived at Cornley and we tried to feed her the alarm clock (which we had covered in Water Buffalo meat). Unfortunately the sedatives she had been given wore off and she burst free from her shipping crate and from the vehicle containing her hospitalising all three of her handlers and Mr Harwood esteemed head of Design Technology at Cornley University.

Nadia roamed the Cornley quad for four hours while students and lecturers hid inside the classrooms and locked the doors. Nadia was finally killed by armed police at 4:36pm outside the Cornley Science Block.

O ur thoughts are with Nadia and all those injured on that dreadful day at Cornley University. The role of the crocodile will now be played by Max Bennett.

( Authors) met while training at LAMDA. Their first show, The Play That Goes Wrong (Best New Comedy, Olivier Awards), opened in the West End in 2014 and on Broadway in 2017. Other credits include The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, Magic Goes Wrong (co-created with Penn & Teller), Groan Ups and the BBC series The Goes Wrong Show. Their work has appeared in over 40 countries worldwide.

JM BARRIE (Original Story) was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, in May 1860. When their parents died, Barrie became guardian to three boys whom he had met in Kensington Gardens in 1897. The boys are thought to be the inspiration for the creation of Peter Pan. Peter Pan first took place in 1904 and remarkably Barrie gifted the copyright to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London in 1929, later extended for perpetuity in the U.K. JM Barrie died in 1937.

RICHARD BAKER (Co-Composer) is a composer, music director and improviser. He has worked with Mischief since 2013 including for Good Luck, Studio, and Mischief Movie Night. SNEHAL DESAI (Artistic Director, he/him). Prior to being named Center Theatre Group’s new Artistic Director, Snehal Desai was the Producing Artistic Director of East West Players, designated an American Cultural Treasure by the Ford Foundation and the nation’s largest and oldest Asian American theatre company. A Soros Fellow and the recipient of a Tanne Award, Desai was in the Inaugural Class of Theatre Communications Group’s (TCG) “Spark” Leadership Program and the Inaugural Recipient of the Drama League’s Classical Directing Fellowship. While at East West Players, Desai produced and directed the three highest grossing and most attended shows in EWP’s fiftyseven-year history including the post-Broadway premiere of Allegiance starring George Takei. During his tenure at East West Players, Desai led co-productions with Center Theatre Group, Pasadena Playhouse, Rogue Artists Ensemble, the LA LGBT Center, Robey Theater Company, The Fountain Theatre, API Rise, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center (JACCC) and TAIKOPROJECT, to name a few. East West Players’ collaboration with singer/songwriter Daniel Ho was nominated for a 2022 Grammy Award. As an artistic leader, Snehal has sought to raise awareness on social issues that affect Angelenos through impactful and empowering storytelling. Desai has served on the boards of the Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists (Caata), Theatre Communications Group (TCG), and Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts (LFCSA). He currently serves on the board of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT); is a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab; and was a literary fellow with London’s Royal Shakespeare Company. Most recently, Snehal was on the faculty of USC’s graduate program in Arts Leadership where he taught Executive Arts Leadership. He is a graduate of Emory University and the Yale School of Drama.

MEGHAN PRESSMAN (Managing Director/CEO, she/ her) joined Center Theatre Group in 2019. Previously, she served as Managing Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (D.C.), Director of Development for Signature Theatre (N.Y.), and Associate Managing Director of Berkeley Rep. She is a graduate of Yale School of Drama/ Yale School of Management, and serves as a mentor in the Theater Management program. Meghan has served as the Vice-Chair for the Theatre Communications Group Board of Directors, and is a member of the Broadway League.

DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director, he/him) joined Center Theatre Group in 1990. Doug is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers (ATPAM). In 2013, Doug received the Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award.

GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

Clue (2024)

Okay, have we done this one officially? Well...no... but it’s coming! Clue is a prime example of a comedic, dramatic piece. How many times have you and your friends laughed and fought as you worked to find the murderer in this nostalgic board game? Now, you will have the opportunity to relive those moments live in the theatre! This show follows a detective who has been tasked with solving a murder that has occurred in a mansion with various guests. Through comedy, the group uses various clues (no pun intended.... actually, it probably was intended) to solve the murder! But they can’t do it without your help! Will you be there to find out who did it? Or will they get away with it....?
