Welcome to Center Theatre Group We’re kicking off 2019 with two productions that explore what it means to be human in very different ways. At the Ahmanson, Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s Come From Away tells the story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland during the days following the attacks of September 11, 2001. Due to the uncertainties at the time, all American airspace was shut down and all planes in the air were forced to land at the closest airport. Gander, population 9,651, unexpectedly was forced to welcome close to 7,000 international passengers on the morning of the attacks, and over the ensuing days housed and fed them all. Quite simply, it’s the story of a town that didn’t hesitate to invite thousands of strangers into their homes and become part of a shared community at a time of great crisis. The story, told dramatically and theatrically, is completely uplifting and life-affirming, and arrives here at a perfect moment for us all, as Americans, to reflect on its message. Uplifting and life-affirming are not words you’re going to hear come out of the mouth of Wheeler, the man at the center of Linda Vista. But as created by Tracy Letts, Wheeler is an indelible character on his own very funny, thought-provoking journey to figure out what his time on earth has meant and where he’s going next. Our audiences loved seeing Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County at the Ahmanson fresh off its 2008 Tony Award® and Pulitzer Prize, and we’re extremely happy to have this great American playwright making his Taper debut now. When did you figure out why, how, and which kinds of theatre moved you? Our new, free program for high school students—Teen Theatregoers—is bringing a group of young people to Center Theatre Group productions to see live theatre, talk about it, and learn more about their own taste in art with theatre professionals over the coming months. Our inaugural cohort kicked the experience off at Dear Evan Hansen.

Center Theatre Group’s LGBTQIA and WomenIdentified Affinity Groups—two of our spaces designed to give staff of similar backgrounds an opportunity to connect with one another—co-presented a very funny and soulful performance of Shakina Nayfack’s one-woman rock musical Manifest P*ssy at The Music Center Annex in the middle of Trans Awareness Week, on November 14, 2018.
Congratulations to the five new L.A. County elementary schools participating in the 2018/19 Disney Musicals in Schools program with Center Theatre Group and Disney Theatrical Productions: Breed Street Elementary, Cantara Street Elementary, Saturn Street Elementary, Tulsa Street Elementary, and Wild Rose School of Creative Arts. Their 17-week musical theatre residency will culminate in a Student Share Celebration at the Ahmanson in the spring.

Are You Bringing Something From Mexico? Returns in English In 2017, Center Theatre Group and Off the Tracks Theater Company presented a Spanish-language reading of Mexican playwright Daimary Sánchez Moreno’s Are You Bringing Something From Mexico? in Boyle Heights libraries. Because this story of reallife undocumented immigrants felt so important right now, we asked Off the Tracks Artistic Director Juan Parada to translate the play into English and bring it back for a return library engagement.

NURTURING L.A. ARTISTS AND HONORING THEIR CHAMPIONS

THIS FALL, THE CENTER THEATRE GROUP FAMILY, AND THE LOS ANGELES ARTS COMMUNITY, LOST A LONGTIME CHAMPION WITH THE DEATH OF DOROTHY SHERWOOD. To honor her contributions, we are renaming our Richard E. Sherwood Award—which Dorothy established in memory of her husband, the longtime President and Chairman of the Center Theatre Group Board of Directors—the Dorothy and Richard E. Sherwood Award. This $10,000 award is given annually to nurture innovative and adventurous theatre artists working in Los Angeles.
“My mother was an avid supporter of the arts in Los Angeles. She was particularly devoted to Center Theatre Group, where she and my father enjoyed the best of contemporary theatre for decades,” said Ben Sherwood. “She was deeply interested in young theatre artists and championed innovative and adventurous new work, which is why she first established an award in her husband Richard’s name to encourage and support emerging theatre artists with exceptional talent. My sister Elizabeth and I hope to honor this legacy with the Dorothy and Richard E. Sherwood Award that will now carry both of their names.” Twenty artists—including playwrights, directors, producers, designers, and multimedia artists—have received the Sherwood Award since 1996. They have gone on to push the boundaries of theatre in Los Angeles and around the country ever since, including here at Center Theatre Group, where we continue to collaborate with many of them. The award is designed to honor a local artist at a catalytic moment in their career, with a focus on innovation, experimentation, craft, and a distinct artistic voice.
The 2019 Dorothy and Richard E. Sherwood Award winner will be announced at the LA STAGE Alliance Ovation Awards on January 28, 2019. The three finalists are performer, Watts Village Artistic Director, and Cornerstone Theater Company Associate Artistic Director Bruce A. Lemon Jr, director Marike Splint, and performance artist, comedian, and writer Kristina Wong. We are proud that the Sherwood Award also features a professional fellowship for an emerging and aspiring arts professional. Our Sherwood Fellow aids in the administration and coordination of the award, receives a mentorship with our staff, and is exposed to contemporary work around L.A. in the process. The award reflects the generous spirit of the Sherwood family; Dorothy Sherwood was deeply involved in the curation and selection process, hosting salons at her home for many of the artists, traveling to theatres around Los Angeles to support new work, and ensuring that the award would truly help recipients. “This gift is somewhat unique in Los Angeles in that it gives artists funds to do whatever they want or need; it supports their vision, without parameters or restrictions, at a crucial point in their careers,” said Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “We are grateful to the Sherwood family for their generosity, which will allow us to continue to make an impact on Los Angeles theatre in the memory of two people who devoted so much of their lives to our community.”

In 1980’s New York, five African American and Latino teenagers were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were unjustly convicted of an attack in Central Park only to be exonerated through DNA 13 years later. After over a decade in prison, they had to rebuild their lives. Davis’s opera is a passionate story about a case that rocked America and its longstanding battle with racial stereotyping and how the young men affected moved on.

“Block Party celebrates the spirit of adventure and exploration that is the hallmark of theatre in Los Angeles.” —Kitty Swink, Antaeus Theatre Company Block Party 2019 kicks off with Theatre of NOTE’s production of For The Love Of (or, the roller derby play) by Gina Femia, directed by Rhonda Kohl (onstage March 7–17, 2019). It’s the story of a young woman who joins a roller derby team and must decide how much she’s willing to risk to follow her heart. With an all-female cast, creative, and design team, For The Love Of “has a cultural makeup that we feel represents greater L.A.,” said Theatre of NOTE Artistic Management Committee Member Alexis DeLaRosa. “This production’s inclusion and representation are what we all should aspire to.” Added Artistic Management Committee Member Lynn Odell, “We are thrilled to be able to present our production to a much larger audience.” DeLaRosa and Odell, along with Bill Voorhees, Sierra Marcks, David Wilcox, and Fiona Lakeland, comprise Theatre of NOTE’s Artistic Management Committee, which leads this democratic ensemble of L.A. theatre artists, who operate out of a black box theatre in the heart of Hollywood. The company was founded in 1981, and is dedicated to creating work that challenges its ensemble and audiences and to telling culturally diverse stories that accurately reflect L.A. Next up is Skylight Theatre Company’s production of Rotterdam by Jon Brittain, directed by Michael A. Shepperd (onstage March 28 – April 7, 2019). “Every day we hear debates over human rights, conversations about including/ excluding, who belongs and who doesn’t,” said Executive Director Sandee Grossman. “The right to affirm one’s identity is at the forefront of those debates.” Co-Artistic Director Tony Abatemarco added, “Rotterdam reveals some of the challenges faced by a person who is transitioning and explores how that transition affects those close to them.” For over 33 years, Skylight has been developing and producing new work for their Los Feliz stage and expanding the boundaries of mainstream theatre. “We are always looking for new artists and compelling contemporary works that take the pulse of our time and our city, stories that help reveal what it means to be human,” said Producing

Artistic Director Gary Grossman. “We’re hoping to gain new audiences through being a Block Party participant, but we also hope to expand our capacity to launch the plays we develop into more theatres regionally and nationwide.” The third and final Block Party 2019 run is Antaeus Theatre Company’s production of Native Son by Nambi E. Kelley, adapted from the novel by Richard Wright, and directed by Andi Chapman (onstage April 18–28, 2019). Set in 1930s Chicago, it is the story of a black man’s longing for social justice that eventually ignites his rage. “Antaeus is a classical theatre ensemble, used to doing Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Shaw—but we’re thrilled to present a modern, cinematic adaptation of the classic American novel Native Son that reimagines what a ‘classic’ can be,” said Co-Artistic Director Bill Brochtrup, who leads Antaeus alongside Co-Artistic Directors Rob Nagle and Kitty Swink. Participating in Block Party is a homecoming of sorts for Antaeus, which is based out of the newly opened Kiki & David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Glendale. The company was founded as a project of Center Theatre Group in 1991 and remains an actor-driven company. “Block Party celebrates the spirit of adventure and exploration that is the hallmark of theatre in Los Angeles,” said Swink. “We’re excited to be a part of it!” Center Theatre Group is excited and honored to be bringing these companies and productions to our audiences, who may not be familiar with them, as well as to new audiences who perhaps aren’t familiar with us.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM Training & Mentorship for Emerging Technical Production and Artistic Professionals
LET’S SAY YOU’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THEATRE. You think you might want to make a career out of working behind the scenes. You may have some experience with university theatre productions; you may have some experience in a different kind of work setting. But you don’t know anyone who’s done a job like the one you think you want to do. What’s next? We wanted to find a way to help people at this key point in their work lives figure that out, so this fall—with support from SoCalGas, a member of our Corporate Circle—we launched the Center Theatre Group Apprenticeship Program. It’s a paid opportunity for people with no background in professional theatre to get hands-on training in technical production and artistic careers. Our first four Apprentices joined us for the World premiere of Quack at the Kirk Douglas Theatre (onstage October 21 – November 18, 2018) to shadow staff members, sit in on the production process, and learn and practice the skills necessary to work in their chosen fields over 100 hours. “There are a lot of opportunities available for people who are already in graduate school or already have more experience, but we’re trying to get people in the door earlier,” said Center Theatre Group Next Generation Initiatives Director Camille Schenkkan. “It’s really about where they are in their careers and where they’re going.”
Our four Quack Apprentices fell in love with the art in different places, at different times in their lives, and come from very different backgrounds and perspectives, yet they all share a desire to take the next step into the world of professional theatre. Technical Direction Apprentice Rex Harrison is a Marine Corps veteran who was introduced to working in theatre over the summer, with Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles’ production of Henry IV. “I really liked doing theatre work and really liked the people I was working around. I didn’t know I’d have interest in working behind the scenes,” he said. As an Apprentice, “I’ve been looking more into what stage managers and assistant stage managers do, and I really enjoy that aspect of it. And I’ve enjoyed doing all the technical production as well, building the sets and designing stuff and solving problems, which I’ve always been kind of good at.” But what he’s appreciated most has been getting to be a part of a group of “really good people,” he said. “You become like a family and work closely together for this production, and you build really good relationships.” Continues on page 18

Relationships have also been a key part of the experience for Directing Apprentice Annie Barker. “What I love about this program and working on Quack is that I’m learning from [the director,] Neel [Keller], [the playwright,] Eliza [Clark], from stage management, and from the actors. The actors have all been amazing,” she said, explaining that they’ve sat down with her individually to offer their insights. “I’m getting a chance to understand the role of director in all its capacities.” She’s also grateful for the opportunity to work on her craft while moving her career path forward. “I’m a young career director. There’s not a lot of concrete things to do. Unlike being an actor, where auditioning is your job, there is not that same task at hand for young directors to get into it,” she explained.
An important component of the program is a diversity requirement: Apprenticeships are intended for people who self-identify as a member of a group currently underrepresented in theatre production and artistic careers. “Applicants had to think deeply about why they were underrepresented in their field,” said Schenkkan. Considering everything from gender and age to experience and background “opened up the possibilities for applicants instead of narrowing it,” she added. Production Management Apprentice Crystal Hui grew up in Hong Kong and graduated from college in May with a theatre degree. “The experience opened my mind as to what American professional theatre is and how the work gets done,” she said. She learned a great deal about the importance of time management. And she was impressed with the attitude and demeanor of her mentors when she witnessed a set piece malfunction during technical rehearsals. “I could see how the production team fixed the problem and managed to keep things going on but not make them any worse,” she said. “That was a really great reminder to myself to stay calm and move forward in the chaos.”
Staff members also appreciated the opportunity to take a step back from their day to day. “For me to work with someone at the very beginning of their career and try to teach them makes me think of the art of what I do again,” said Production Manager Christopher Reardon. “I have to explain what I do and why I’m making the choices I’m making.” Assistant Production Manager Katie Chen added, “I get excited about mentoring someone else because I’ve learned a lot just by doing it.” The Apprentices have also received individualized professional development opportunities, including resume and cover letter assistance and the chance to make connections with local mentors outside the company. We want them to enter the world of professional Los Angeles theatre with both experience and confidence—which will benefit not just them but the theatres where they work. This is one reason why this program aligns with SoCalGas’ charitable giving in the community. “SoCalGas has provided clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Southern California for more than 150 years,” said Sharon Tomkins, Vice President of Customer Solutions and Strategy at SoCalGas. “We are also a long-time partner of Center Theatre Group and are proud to support education and workforce development programs, such as the Production Apprenticeship Program, that provide members of underrepresented groups with opportunities in STEM fields and various trades.”

Hello, Welcome to the Rock! When we traveled to Newfoundland in September 2011 on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we had no idea that our journey would take us across the United States, to our home city of Toronto, eventually landing on Broadway. We spent a month in Gander, Newfoundland and the surrounding communities meeting with the locals, returning flight crews and pilots, and returning “come from aways” (a Newfoundland term for a visitor from beyond the island) who gathered to celebrate the hope that emerged from tragedy. We didn’t know what we were looking for, but thankfully the people of Newfoundland are incredible storytellers. As we heard numerous tales of ordinary people and extraordinary generosity, it became clear that during the week of 9/11, for the 7,000 stranded passengers and people of Newfoundland, the island was a safe harbor in a world thrown into chaos. We laughed, we cried, we were invited over for dinner and offered cars. We made lifetime friends out of strangers, and we came home wanting to share every story we heard. Through this journey, we’ve learned it’s important to tell stories about welcoming strangers and stories of kindness. It’s important to honor what was lost and commemorate what was found. DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 29 season at Center Theatre Group. He is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network, and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. In May 2013, Doug received the Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award. TH
JEFFREY UPAH (General Manager, Ahmanson Theatre) has worked in management at Center Theatre Group since 2006 on more than 50 musicals, plays, and special events including both pre-Broadway productions and Broadway tours. Some of his favorites include Follies, God of Carnage, and The Black Rider (having previously worked on Robert Wilson productions in Boston, Houston, and Sao Paulo, Brazil). The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has its own dictionary. The province’s language and dialect are so diverse, different communities spread throughout the island often have their own, unique accent. Newfoundland has no crickets, porcupines, skunks, snakes, or deer. It does, however, have over 100,000 moose. They were introduced over 100 years ago. Distance from Gander to the nearest Starbucks: 4 hours, in St. Johns.
The first known European presence in North America was not Christopher Columbus, but rather the Vikings. They arrived at L’Anse aux Meadows, located at the very northern tip of the island, which is believed to be the location of a Viking colony. It was discovered in 1960 and it is believed that the settlement was founded around the year 1,000. Newfoundland used to be an independent country. In 1907, Newfoundland was given dominion status by the U.K. along with New Zealand, Australia, and Canada and remained so until 1949 when it joined the Canadian confederation. Gander International Airport boasted Newfoundland’s first 24-hour liquor license and the province’s first escalator. Nearly all of Gander’s streets are named for famous aviators, including Amelia Earhart, Alcock and Brown, Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, Marc Garneau, and Chuck Yeager. Newfoundland and Labrador was named one of the top 10 friendliest cultures in the world according to Maclean’s magazine.
