CTG to Center Theatre Group and the Mark Taper Forum
Ten years ago, I was invited to a show presented by Deaf West Theatre at Inner-City Arts here in Downtown LA. The show was the talk of the town. I had never thought of musical storytelling through a Deaf perspective before and I didn’t know quite what to expect. Within seconds I was transfixed, and by the end of the performance I was seeing the world and my day-to-day existence in a new light. That is what great theatre can do—create a world where anything is possible; one where, through storytelling, we can be collectively inspired, empowered, and uplifted.
American Idiot seemed like the ideal musical to revisit this fall as we head into a pivotal election year and face “another turning point” in our country’s history. I was looking for something that would be a bold new production to launch CTG’s 57th Season, while also acknowledging our legacy of collaborating with other LA theatres. I was also interested in taking a transgressive form, like punk rock, and transgressing against what have become customary ideas of what it is and who can experience and represent it. Our hope with this production is to bring together a diverse community of hearing and Deaf actors to create a new rock symphony composed of movement and voice with ASL and spoken English. In doing so, we revisit Green Day’s iconic album, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, anew in a way that is reflective of and in conversation with our world and experiences today.
It took many stars aligning at exactly the right moment to bring this show to you. I want to, first and foremost, acknowledge our friends at Deaf West, with whom this is CTG’s fourth collaboration—and particularly my colleague DJ Kurs for his partnership and leadership. A big thank you to this fearless company of artists who helped bring this production together, as well as CTG’s hardworking and dedicated staff and Board of Directors. And, finally, a very big thank you to all of you for joining us on the One CTG. One LA. journey this year—and for celebrating the return to regular season programming here at the Taper. From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of everyone at CTG, Deaf West, and our inspiring American Idiot company, thank you for joining us tonight. We hope you have the time of your life.
Sincerely,
Snehal Desai

"Los Angeles is 72 suburbs in search of a city."
—Dorothy Parker
Welcome to the edge of everything. Tonight, you’re not just here to watch a show—you’re stepping into the heart of a beautiful mess. This isn’t where you come for neat narratives or tidy endings. This is where the raw and unapologetic truth spills out, where the world doesn’t ask for permission to exist. It’s chaos. It’s a primal scream that shakes the very structures we’ve been told to fit into—but never could. Sign language becomes an act of rebellion, a visual and emotional force that disrupts the narrative as much as it drives it.
American Idiot was born in the aughts, but its pulse beats louder today. By including Deaf people—individuals who are driven to create spaces for themselves where society has not—this story feels even more vital. Our world has always existed on the margins, but through the rise of social media and digital platforms Deaf creators have redefined what it means to be heard. They’ve shown that music is not just something you hear—it’s the vibration in your chest, the pulse in your veins, the energy of a crowd moving as one.
In this production, sound, gesture, and story converge upon a meeting place where worlds smash into one another. Every sign is
The new production of Green Day’s American Idiot at the Mark Taper Forum this fall is Center Theatre Group’s fourth collaboration with Los Angeles’s Deaf West Theatre. Founded in 1991, Deaf West has created theatre and other artistic media inspired by Deaf culture which weaves ASL and spoken English together. As a Los Angeles theatre company, their work has been seen on stages across the city and beyond: Spring Awakening transferred from Inner-City Arts to The Wallis and then to Broadway in 2015, where it earned three Tony Award nominations.
DJ Kurs has served as Artistic Director of Deaf West Theatre since 2012, overseeing Spring Awakening and many other productions over the past 12 years. But Kurs’ history with Deaf West starts earlier than that; he grew up attending Deaf West productions with his family ever since he was 13-years-old. “When I saw lines of patrons snaking out of the Mark Taper Forum for our production of Big River, I
saw that this art could have a profound impact, so I approached the founding Artistic Director, Ed Waterstreet, about working at the company,” Kurs said. He went on to write a play for young audiences and “earned his chops” as an ASL Choreographer for many productions. When it was time for Ed to retire, Kurs was asked to take his place.
“I am obsessed with moments that go beyond language,” Kurs said of the spirit of Deaf West productions. In a co-production of a modernized Cyrano de Bergerac with the Fountain Theatre, Kurs recalled a scene in which actor Troy Kotsur signs a poem “so deeply rooted in in American Sign Language (ASL)” to fellow actor Paul Raci. “[Raci] makes a valiant attempt to interpret it, but the true essence lingers unspoken, hovering in the air,” Kurs said. “As a native ASL speaker, what I see and feel in that moment transcends anything words could capture.”
"Mostly I just kill time," he said, "and it dies hard."
—Raymond Chandler, The Long Goodbye
a punch, every gesture a scream, as powerful as any chord or beat. Nothing feels more punk than that–forging connections, finding common ground through the shared experience of music, emotion, and story. In a world that feels more divided than ever, American Idiot reminds us that when Deaf and hearing communities come together, signing and speaking, we create something far greater than the sum of its parts.
This American Idiot isn’t about fitting into a genre or following a formula. Our cast, a fearless mix of Deaf and hearing artists, have thrown themselves into this project with the kind of abandon that only comes from living on the edge.
Our production is about losing yourself in those moments where everything feels like it could fall apart and realizing that maybe that’s exactly where you’re meant to be. Sort of like coming to terms with LA.
Deaf West is honored to produce this show with our friends at Center Theatre Group, an enduring partnership that could only happen here, in our city. The resilience of our theatre companies—and of your support—defines this moment, and we hope you’ll celebrate the beautiful chaos of it all.
Thank you for being here, for bringing your energy into this space, and for being part of something as unapologetic and untamed as Los Angeles.
Los Angeles is where Deaf West belongs. On the edge.
With fire and love,
DJ Kurs Artistic Director, Deaf West Theatre
With over thirty years of history, Deaf West Theatre continues to inspire generations of Deaf artists.
By Jessica Doherty
This sensation is central to Deaf West’s ethos to bring Deaf culture to the forefront of their storytelling.
“About 90% of Deaf children are born to hearing parents and about 70% of those hearing parents do not learn sign language or communicate with their children through language,” said Deaf West’s Managing Director Jeff Perri. “It’s important to Deaf West to show that positive mentorship through performance, through services, through being present.”
Perri is a CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults) and brings his connection to both the Deaf and hearing communities into his work with Deaf West. “Deaf West is a unique company where we really do believe in the partnership between the Deaf and hearing communities and it is a space where we come together—we are creating art and projects and programs in its purest form and that collaboration I think has been one of the keys to our longevity as a company,” he said.
How a Chinatown restaurantcreated a
That night, the multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning band Green Day performed at the venue’s outdoor Nokia Plaza, electrifying thousands of rock fans who attended a one-nightonly free concert. The show featured a set list comprised of some of the band’s biggest hits, such as “Minority,” “Know Your Enemy,” “Holiday,” and “Welcome to Paradise.”
But, in the early days of punk here in Los Angeles, the stages were not quite so big—and local bands struggled to find a place to perform at all. That is until a Chinese American woman by the name of Esther Wong turned her struggling Chinatown restaurant on the other end of downtown into one of the most important landmarks in this city’s vibrant history of punk rock. If you were to walk to Chinatown from the Mark Taper Forum, you could be there in less time than it takes to listen to Green Day’s “Jesus of Suburbia,” a song clocking in at just over nine minutes. That’s how close you are currently sitting to punk rock lore.
In 1978, Southern California became the birthplace of hardcore punk, thanks to the emergence of bands such as Black Flag, Germs, Fear, and Circle Jerks. While the city’s young music enthusiasts welcomed this new movement with open arms—along with mosh pits and banging heads—the local proprietors of clubs and other traditional music venues, such as the legendary Troubadour in West Hollywood, were quick to ban punk rock from their stages. This was, of course, due to the rebellious and frenetic nature of the music—and, more specifically, its live shows. There are countless stories of punk rock concerts leading to destruction of property, violence, and
arrests. As a result, local punk rockers of the 1970s had to get creative and be open to new and unusual venues as hosts for
While this punk movement was exploding, Madame Wong’s Chinese Restaurant was barely hanging on. So, when Paul Greenstein, a local music promoter, met Esther Wong, they began to cook up something other than chow mein. They had an idea that would change the course of punk rock in Los Angeles. The heart of Chinatown, known for its colorful buildings, hanging lanterns, pagoda roofs, and endless storefronts, was about to attract an entirely new kind of customer. Together, Wong and Greenstein decided that they would use Tuesday nights to test out this bold, new experiment. Within a year, Tuesday nights at Madame Wong’s became the best night of the week for punk rock in all of Southern California. In fact, this new punk venue became so popular, Wong soon opened a second location in Santa Monica so she could also serve punk devotees on the west side of town.
Although business was booming, the run would only last so long. Pick a saying—“good things never last,” “history repeats itself,” “this is why we can’t have nice things”—and it certainly applies here. Sure enough, over time, Esther Wong grew tired of the unruly and disorderly crowds, the nightly fist fights, and the gradual destruction of the restaurant she so lovingly built and created. So, in the 1980s, she changed course once again and opened Madame Wong’s to other kinds of music. Soon, local punk bands were relegated to the backseat in favor of up-and-coming new wave acts. Over the years, some of LA’s hottest bands would go on to play the Madame Wong stage, including The Knack, Guns N’ Roses, Oingo Boingo, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Esther Wong’s decision to steer clear of traditional punk rock from that moment on meant that local hardcore acts were left, once again, without a place to call home. In an interesting twist, they would find a new one just 100 feet away from Madame Wong’s—directly across Central Plaza in Chinatown.
punk movement in LA
By Brett Webster
A man by the name of Barry Seidel saw an opportunity and created a new space for punk rock in Downtown LA. He called his venue Hong Kong Café, and soon, bands like The Plugz, Nervous Gender, and The Alley Cats were tearing up its stage. And if the bands happened to tear up any other part of the venue while they were at it—then money was taken out of the band’s cut that night; a policy to get around the destruction that took place across the way at Madame Wong’s. The policy worked initially, but eventually, Hong Kong Café would close its doors in 1981, less than two years after it opened.
“The Chinatown Punk Wars,” as they are referred to today, ended up being a fleeting moment in time; as short and as fast and as furious as a Ramones song. But the legacy they built, and the story behind two of the most unlikely of music venues, would live on as part of LA punk history forever.
Esther Wong, remembered today as the “Godmother of Punk,” passed away on August 14th, 2005, the day after her 88th birthday. The original Madame Wong’s closed two decades earlier in 1985 after a fire ravished the building. It was one final act of destruction on the Chinese restaurant that will forever be known as LA’s original haven for punk rock.

Green Day’s American Idiot at the Taper this fall is a timely revitalization of the 2010 Broadway musical and 2004 rock album of the same name. In collaboration with Deaf West Theatre, the story will speak to Deaf and hearing audiences alike about the experience of being a young American in the election year of 2024. It is also particularly timely for Center Theatre Group—American Idiot is not only Artistic Director Snehal Desai’s directorial debut with the company but it is also the first show in the venue to be produced by CTG after a yearlong hiatus.
“We knew we wanted to open with a musical, and I wanted to make sure we did a new production that was representing LA and also CTG history,” Desai said. The production hopes to speak to the richness of the different demographics and communities throughout the city. Deaf West is no stranger to musical collaborations with CTG, with three different musical productions and at all three of CTG’s venues. But the added layer of a rock opera makes this production unique and timely.
“[American Idiot ] is almost all sung through, there are very few scenes and most of the story is told in movement,” Desai said. “I think it’s the most dance-heavy production Deaf West has done.”
ASL Choreographer Colin Analco, Associate ASL Choreographer Amelia Hensley, and Choreographer Jennifer Weber are the team bringing that side of the story to life.
“As a choreographer, I usually work alone, so it’s great to have other people to bounce ideas off of...and [work] on how to find the bridge between our worlds,” Weber said. “There’s just unlimited capacity for storytelling in all humans.”
But Analco and Hensley’s work also involves some differences to Weber’s work. “Dance choreographers work dance-to-music, with its own language, its own world...to make sure that is conveyed on stage,” Analco said. “An ASL Choreographer has a similar type of job—it has its own language, its own rules...so we are able to bring those features to the stage to match with whatever the Dance Choreographer has done, to match the music, to match the beat...to convey the meaning that we’ve created between all three choreographers.”
This work began with a translation of the text into ASL before teaching the actors how to sign the lines. From there, Analco said the work is similar to that of a vocal coach—working with the actors on how to adapt the movements and expressions to their bodies and personalities.

“English is very different than ASL and we are expressing it in different ways, we are going with the subtext and the underlying meaning of the words...and fit with the beat,” Hensley said. She added that there is no right way to approach the work, like how there are many ways to sign love with the added context and tone needed for the moment. There is also not one right way to be a part of the Deaf community, explains Assistant Director Sarah Tubert. “What’s amazing about this production is the ability to be able to see different types of Deaf people in this world and that’s what our community is about—welcoming all different types and how there is not one right way to be Deaf in this world.”
Here's how to sign "AMERICAN IDIOT"
The endeavor of connecting Deaf and hearing communities through art is at the crux of Deaf West’s work and the production’s story. “American Idiot speaks to the disillusionment and frustration that many feel in today’s world—emotions that resonate deeply with both Deaf and hearing individuals,” Deaf West Artistic Director DJ Kurs said. “The themes of rebellion, identity, and the search for meaning are universal, and the raw energy of the music mirrors the intensity of these experiences.”
Desai hopes all audiences of American Idiot can feel these universal feelings during the show. “For us at Center Theatre Group, we view ourselves as LA’s theatre company,” he said. “We want all Angelenos to feel welcome, and I think that’s why I’m so proud that we are starting this season with this show and this collaboration.”

What’s up, rockers? If you’re reading this, you’re probably ready to jam out at this performance of Green Day’s American Idiot! You’re in for an incredible time, but before you go on that journey, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and talk about other productions at CTG that embrace the spirit of rock and roll! So, grab your guitars and let’s hit the road for a one-of-a-kind world tour of CTG history!
SEX, DRUGS, ROCK & ROLL
MARK TAPER FORUM, 1991
Performing a series of monologues spewed by an array of characters from a subway panhandler to a hypocritical rock star, Eric Bogosian’s Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll showed Mark Taper Forum audiences the highs and lows of the complex society around them. Through comedy, Bogosian immortalizes the state of American culture in the 90s.
AHMANSON THEATRE, 1997
The Ahmanson Theatre was home to the Los Angeles premiere of Rent, the classic rock musical that tackles the AIDS crisis and poverty in the early 90s. With a company lead by the iconic Neil Patrick Harris, this musical arrived to LA audiences after its West Coast premiere at La Jolla Playhouse! Rent was due, and the City of Angels paid up!
13: THE MUSICAL
MARK TAPER FORUM, 2007
You may not immediately think of 13: The Musical as a rock musical, but with a band composed entirely of teenagers, we must give a shoutout to this iconic production! Before heading to Broadway and giving Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies their professional debuts, the all-teen musical made its world premiere here at the Mark Taper Forum! The production was later adapted to film by Netflix in 2022.
continues on page 18
AHMANSON THEATRE, 2008
Keeping the spirits of teenage angst going, Spring Awakening explores the tumultuous reality of puberty and coming-of-age with a rock score to accompany the storytelling. The Tony Award-winning musical has forever ingrained itself into the playlists of theatre kids across the country (including yours truly!).
BLOODY, BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON
KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE, 2008
Before there was Hamilton, there was Jackson. Kirk Douglas audiences had a firsthand look at this historical rock comedy that explores the founding of the Democratic Party and the legacy of Andrew Jackson. The production held its world premiere in the heart of Culver City and went on to receive two Tony nominations upon its transfer to Broadway!
NEXT TO NORMAL
AHMANSON THEATRE, 2010
KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE, 2013
Scattered among the drums and guitars are the hopes, dreams, angst, and rebellion of a new generation screaming to be heard. Joe Iconis, largely known for his work on Smash and Be More Chill held the world premiere of his rock musical The Black Suits at the Kirk Douglas Theatre! The show follows four teenage Long Island misfits who band together to escape Garden City, conquer the world, and most of all, be cool.
When mental health was not commonly discussed in the mainstream, Next to Normal tackled grief, depression, and loss and brought them center stage. With an electrifying rock score that draws on the heavy themes of the show, the Broadway production was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and took home three, including Best Original Score. The show then toured the country, allowing Ahmanson audiences to experience the passion and fire behind the production firsthand.
AHMANSON THEATRE, 2012
Did you just get deja vu? In 2012, Green Day’s American Idiot arrived at the Ahmanson Theatre straight from Broadway, bringing a “rabble-rousing pop-punk show” that had “the same intensity as a full throttle concert” (LA Times)! The production differentiates itself from the 2024 version, which is a collaboration between Center Theatre Group and Deaf West Theatre and brings Deaf actors center stage to the story. All that to say, you’re in for a good time.
GREEN DAY'S
KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE, 2015
Following the life of legendary music writer and critic Lester Bangs, How To Be A Rock Critic adapts Lester’s personal writings to showcase his life, work, and death during the 20th century. The production held its world premiere at the Kirk Doulgas Theatre and was written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen.
THE BLACK SUITS ROCK CRITIC HOW TO BE A GIRLFRIEND
KIRK DOUGLAS THEATRE, 2015
This coming-of-age rock musical follows two teenage boys living in Nebraska in the 90s, one who’s a social outcast and the other a jock, as they explore a relationship in a summer of self-discovery following their high school graduation. The musical embraces small town vibes, feeling different, and the thrills and terrors of first love, all with a sick beat.

GREEN DAY ( Music ) - vocalist/guitarist BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG, bassist MIKE DIRNT, and drummer TRÉ COOLwere kids from working-class backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released two records prior (1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994's Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, which won the 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold "Know Your Enemy," which was the first song ever to top Billboard's Rock, Alternative, and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously; and the doubleplatinum "21 Guns," which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. Later that year, Green Day collaborated with Tony Award winning director of Spring Awakening, Michael
Mayer, for the stage musical of American Idiot. The play bowed at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009 and set attendance records during its limited engagement. The play went on to Broadway and ran for a year at the St. James Theatre and won two Tony Awards Green Day's highly anticipated album trilogy kicked off with the release of Green Day ¡Uno!, (September 25, 2012) followed by Green Day ¡Dos! (November 13th), and Green Day ¡Tré! (December 11th). The band recently completed the Soundwave Festival in Australia. For more info visit greenday.com.

Perri worked on the marketing for the 2018 Broadway revival of Children of a Lesser God. His father knew Kurs from when he lived in Los Angeles and connected the two. Perri eventually started working with Deaf West four years ago, in the throes of the pandemic, and has served as the Managing Director for two.
"While theatre is in our title, [Deaf West Theatre is] more than just a theatre company,” Perri said. “We really try to get involved in all facets of entertainment and provide services to the industry that can better not only those companies or projects, but the entertainment community at large.” As a company, they have worked in a variety of creative capacities with companies like Disney and Google in both creative service and consulting capacities.
Deaf West worked with Capitol Records on a music video for Calum Scott’s American Sign Language cover of his song, “Biblical.” Otis Jones IV and Giovanni Maucere, both in this cast of American Idiot, starred in the music video that Deaf West generated the concept, ASL translation and script, and talent for.
Other cast members in American Idiot are no stranger to Deaf West’s previous work. Daniel Durant played Moritz in Deaf West’s production of Spring Awakening in 2015. “[Durant] got his start at Deaf West and we have worked closely together over the years. It’s been incredible to see his growth as an artist,” Kurs said. “He brings an authenticity and depth to his roles that truly embodies the spirit of our company.”
Both Durant and Kotsur starred in the Academy Award-winning CODA in 2021, which Kurs feels was a watershed moment for Deaf representation. “It underscores the importance of creating more opportunities for Deaf artists to share their experiences and talents on the world stage,” Kurs said.
inaccessible to our world? We are humans, after all, and music is a surprisingly effective vehicle that brings us in
Kurs and Perri hope that Deaf West can continue to support the next generation of Deaf artists, both on stage and in other mediums, through their work.
“Accessibility is a loaded word, it can mean what we do at Deaf West or another community,” Perri said. “[But] that needs to happen at the moment of creation and...as a part of the conversation when a project, a musical, a play, is being created and it doesn’t have to be specific to a Deaf theme.”
But this work also goes beyond Deaf West. Kurs hopes for a future in which ASL and Deaf culture are seen as “integral elements of storytelling, rather than afterthoughts.”
“Ultimately, I want Deaf West to remain a place where the Deaf community can see their stories reflected and where hearing audiences can experience the richness of sign language and Deaf culture,” Kurs said. “I envision a future where theatre is truly inclusive, where Deaf artists are not only represented but are leaders in shaping the direction of the art form.”

The rise of social media and proliferation of ASL translations and interpretations of popular music and slang also play into the artistic vision of American Idiot. “For Deaf West, this production is rooted in the growth of music as a vehicle of expression within our community, which is a development that has been accelerated by the rise of social media,” Kurs said. “What brings us towards music, an art form that is seemingly

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES
Support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors plays an invaluable role in the successful operation of The Music Center.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As a steward of The Music Center of Los Angeles County, we recognize that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh and Chumash Peoples. We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants — past, present and emerging — as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters. We acknowledge that settler colonization resulted in land seizure, disease, subjugation, slavery, relocation, broken promises, genocide and multigenerational trauma. This acknowledgment demonstrates our responsibility and commitment to truth, healing and reconciliation and to elevating the stories, culture and community of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles County.
