welcome
WELCOME TO CENTER THEATRE GROUP AND THE AHMANSON THEATRE!
We are beyond thrilled to bring you this production of Once Upon a Mattress, direct from Broadway, with a beloved trinity of stage and screen stars—Sutton Foster, Michael Urie, and Ana Gasteyer to LA for the holiday season! Many of you may remember Sutton from her utterly charming and endearing performance in The Drowsy Chaperone, which made its US premiere here at the Ahmanson in 2005, and Michael from his nothing less than iconic performance in Buyer & Cellar, which played the Taper in 2014. It’s great to have them back at CTG in what I feel, it’s safe to say, is the very first pea-themed musical at the Ahmanson.
A very big thank you to all our One CTG subscribers for joining us on this journey. Green Day’s American Idiot was a record-breaking success at the Taper thanks to your support and for that I am personally grateful to you. And now, we are so glad to welcome all our subscribers and patrons back to the Ahmanson this season with this delightful show.
2024 has been a memorable year on many fronts and I know the one constant I hold onto in times like these is the love of family and community. They are what the holidays are about for so many of us. I love this show because it is full of joy and laughter, and your joy and laughter is the greatest gift to all of us here at CTG. Thank you for joining us and supporting live theatre. On behalf of CTG’s Board of Directors, staff, and community of artists, we wish you and all your loved ones a happy and safe holiday season and new year.
Cheers,
Snehal Desai

Pillow Talk with Sutton Foster Michael Urie
THE STAGE AND SCREEN ROYALTY DISH ABOUT ONCE UPON A MATTRESS ’ BROADWAY RUN AND THEIR BEHINDTHE-SCENES MOMENTS.
By Jessica Doherty
Fresh off of their Broadway run, Sutton Foster and Michael Urie are returning to the Center Theatre Group kingdom for Once Upon a Mattress this December at the Ahmanson Theatre.
Foster first performed at the Ahmanson in Les Misérables in 2000 and later starred in The Drowsy Chaperone in 2005 preBroadway. Urie starred in Buyer & Cellar after its Off-Broadway run in 2014.
During Drowsy Chaperone in Los Angeles, Foster broke her wrist during rehearsals.
“We were doing one of our final run throughs and we were singing ‘Accident Waiting to Happen,’” Foster said. “I backed up and lost my footing, my feet went forward and I caught myself on my hands and I broke my right wrist.” Throughout the production, she was expected to do cartwheels and tricks—so she learned how to do them with one hand while her wrist recovered in a cast. “After I would do the number, I would exit the stage with my arm above my head, and everyone would be in the wings with their arm above waving,” she said. Rest
assured, Foster is “very excited to return—and there’s going to be no drama.”
Urie’s last run at Center Theatre Group was a lot smoother. “My six weeks at the Taper was by far the best of anywhere I did it,” he said. “It was a show biz show, so this town was so perfect. And I think that there’s something really special about bringing something right to CTG, because it is like the jewel of LA theatre and we’re...coming right from Broadway.”
Foster finds that December is the perfect month for Once Upon a Mattress. “It’s such perfect timing because it’s a show for everybody, it’s the perfect family show. When you’ve got everyone in town and you’re like, ‘What do we want to do?’
You come see Once Upon a Mattress!”
Before they arrived in Los Angeles, we asked Foster and Urie for some of their slumber party secrets from the Broadway run of Once Upon a Mattress and more.
Answers have been edited for clarity and length.
You two previously worked together on Darren Star’s Younger. How has your relationship changed and grown since then?
URIE: I feel like when we did Younger we were friendly, but I feel like now, I hope it’s okay to say that we became friends.
FOSTER: I was always so excited when [Urie] would come on Younger because it was always this breath of fresh air. [He] was so funny but he always played such a b*tch of a little character, he was such a little brat when he came on, but we loved him for it. In that show, [he] would come and go, so being able to spend so much time together and... given so much opportunity and license to make [Once Upon A Mattress] our own...with [Urie] has been awesome. And there’s still moments in the show where we say we mind meld, we just leap and [he] always catches me.
URIE: Being in a musical with Sutton Foster is like going swimming with Michael Phelps. It is extremely thrilling to be on stage with her. She’s like a supernova. The energy reminds me of when I was a kid and I would see shows at the Dallas Fair Park Music Hall, which was this massive place. And I remember occasionally a star would come through...we were always in the balcony, but I remember seeing their faces. And I feel that when I am up with [Foster], I feel like everyone in the back can see her face, she is sending it all the way out there to everyone...and I want them to know that’s really her, she’s giving her real self when she’s out there.
FOSTER: It’s exceedingly rare, but you don’t want to take any of these things for granted, like, when you have a scene partner where it is just effortless, [you] are going to treasure every moment you have.
Sutton, you worked with Once Upon a Mattress writer Amy Sherman-Palladino on Bunheads as well. What has it been like working with her again?
FOSTER: Bunheads is one of the things that brought me out to LA because it was shot in LA in 2012. I was such a big Gilmore Girls fan and it was really my dream come true to be able to work with her and to now call her a friend. When Lear deBessonet asked me to do Once Upon a Mattress, she was like, ‘Well, we should do a pass-through or punch-up of the script,’ and I immediately thought of Amy. So, I sent her a text and she said yes. What I think she did so delicately with this script was honor the script from 1959 and infuse it with newness, but not this massive departure. She made her Broadway debut as a writer and I remember on opening night her standing there with me on curtain call. She’s the type of
person where, if she asked me to do anything, whatever it is, I’ll do it. I would follow her anywhere.
What are some of your pre-show rituals?
FOSTER: We do a thing called Monarch of the Moment every Saturday night. So, every Saturday night, someone gets crowned—it’s sort of like Employee of the Week—but the person who gets the crown passes it to the next person. It's usually honoring someone, if somebody had a really hard week or really stepped up or was a really exemplary company member. We [also] do bagel Saturday—that’s a tradition I’ve done ever since Thoroughly Modern Millie. I buy bagels for the company every week on Saturday.
URIE: I mean, we count on bagels. I leave the house like, ‘I’ll have a bagel at the theatre.’
How do you and the cast stay connected?
URIE: Sutton [and Amanda] lead a warmup on two-show days. It’s a quick 15 minutes, move your body. But it’s really good to check in. I like doing it because I want to know where she’s at. Sometimes you end up on stage and you haven’t seen the person yet that day, and you look across like, ‘Oh, there they are. I wonder what they’re doing, I wonder if they had a good day or a bad day.’ Even though she doesn’t come on for half an hour, she hangs at places.
FOSTER: I come down in my sweatpants and my wig cap and say hi to everybody.
URIE: It’s nice because it happens a lot when you have a long run that you stop that. You just kind of see each other on stage and it’s a weird feeling. You see your collaborators on stage, because it's a fake life.
FOSTER: That transition from the rehearsal room to production—in the rehearsal room, we’re all there together, we’re all hanging out, and we get to the theatre and everyone’s in their own dressing rooms. But I feel like this company has done pretty well at finding ways to come together... The community that we have here feels like a family.
What’s your ideal bedtime routine?
FOSTER: I’m a big bath taker. I take a bath every single night.
URIE: A bath?
FOSTER: Yes, really. I don’t take showers, I only take baths, really. My mom used to take baths. It’s funny, I guess that’s what I grew up with. But I took a bath today, at 2:30 p.m. Sometimes I take them to reset.

BUILDING COMMUNITY WITH LIBRARY READINGS
Each year, Center Theatre Group commissions local Los Angeles playwrights and artists to create plays to be read at Boyle Heights libraries.
“Through Community Partnerships, we make theatre a part of people’s lives and it’s not always in a traditional theatre,” said Director of Learning and Community Partnerships Jesus Reyes. “We’ve been offering free play readings throughout Boyle Heights at three Los Angeles Public Libraries for the past ten years. What better place than a library–a repository of stories–to surprise people with live performance of a play written by a local playwright and performed by local actors and presented in English, Spanish, or a mix of other languages. Great stories leave an emotional mark on the reader, on the spectator, on an audience, and that’s what we attempt with every play performed on a stage or in a library.”
Learn more about some of the playwrights and actors from the Community Play Readings commissions this fall and winter.
El Árbol, or The Tree, was the first short play Josie Nericcio ever completed, through a class with Casa 0101 in Boyle Heights. Nericcio is originally from the border town Laredo, Texas. She usually sets her plays in Laredo, and this play is no exception—but it does take place in 1969. In the play, neighbors decide to cut down a tree in their front yard, testing the friendship of a group of women in the process. Nericcio was inspired by her long-time neighbor, who had a beautiful tree in her front yard. After the woman passed, the new neighbors cut it down, devastating Nericcio and the community. “All these little pieces from my life found their way into this story,” she said. “I’m just trying to show that the small moments in life are actually universal.”
Director Javier Balderas grew up as an artist thanks to his community in Mexico—people would come together for many different holidays on the plaza to perform and celebrate.
“We would try to bring art to those little cities and it was where I grew up as an artist with the community, in the streets, on the plaza, with the people I love in these places like libraries, places where the community is,” he said. He was working in Zacatecas before he came to Los Angeles for the first time at the suggestion of his longtime teacher, Julia Robles. But he has returned because of that spirit of community. “I come back to my country because my people is here, and it’s what I love, this experience of directing and the community,” he said. This community minded approach to theatre made directing El Traficante De Historias a fitting job for him, despite being more humorous than his work as an actor and director usually is. He was able to connect to a new community in Los Angeles, especially by the last performance. “The last day that we do [the play], it was a lot of people, I was not expecting that,” he said. “We live in a time that is day by day more hard to get people in art...if you put it art in libraries, you put it in community centers, you put it in senior centers, people are going to be there.”
P.C. Verrone frequently “twists” well known stories and fables. The Elves is no different—it is a modern retelling of the Grimms’ Fairy Tale, The Elves and the Shoemaker. But in this version, the elves are helping a struggling novelist write his magnum opus while he sleeps. Just when he makes it big, the elves unionize and demand fair compensation for their work, sparking a timely debate about the price of creative labor. “I’m very involved in the world of labor organizing and having seen the summer of labor organizing that happened recently and the fervor around talking about the importance of...compensating creative labor, this... community play reading felt like a marriage of what are really grassroots labor organizing philosophies and ideas in a fun and outrageous play,” Verrone said. He grew up attending many events and visiting Los Angeles libraries as
Diego de Los Andes was inspired by his 14-month-old daughter when writing El Deseo del Gigante, or, The Giant’s Wish. “Now that I have a girl, I started to see the world different,” he said. “I never could see until now how the world is going to be for her.” The solo Spanish show follows a girl trying to rescue her grandmother from a giant that emerges from the eastern Santa Monica mountain range on Christmas Eve. De Los Andes is from the Andes between Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. There was a large mountain called The Grandpa and another mountain called The Grandma that, at a certain time, created a face when you look at them and the stars. He grew up with stories about these mountains and also drew inspiration from local
Indigenous rituals celebrating and protecting the spirit of the Oaks in the San Gabriel valley. Through telling stories about the natural environment of Los Angeles, he hopes to touch upon the timely struggles of the city and its residents, especially when it comes to gentrification and rising rent costs. He hopes that, through the story, audiences can make the world offstage a better place for his daughter. “At least I can give her the tools to have a better society, to understand her position, and to explore,” de Los Andes said. “[And] it will become for all the little girls who don’t have many stories about [themselves].”
CTG Resident Teaching Artist Estela Garcia is writing a personal play with movement and masks in mind. Her parents grew up poor on a ranch in Jalisco, Mexico with little running water and electricity. Using some of her father’s and mother’s real stories, Hunger/Hambre will unpack the ideas of poverty, hunger, and sacrifice. While these stories are from a different time and place, Garcia sees how they can connect to Los Angeles residents who are facing the struggles of the
on page 34 a child and he wrote The Elves with the audience and space in mind. “When I was writing this, I was thinking about, as someone who both loved libraries and loved theatre growing up, what’s the kind of show I would be interested in seeing at that age?,” he said. “I like to make audiences look at those stories that they take for granted in a different light.”
“Great stories leave an emotional mark on the reader, on the spectator, on an audience, and that’s what we attempt with every play performed on a stage or in a library.”

Ruby Red Heels!
ALEX
EDELMAN’S
JUST FOR US A Basketball
Before winning a Tony and Emmy Award for his work, Alex Edelman brought his hit show Just For Us to the Mark Taper Forum for a special engagement! The show follows Edelman, who, in the wake of antisemitic rhetoric online, decides to go straight to the source; specifically, a meeting of White Nationalists in Queens. While covertly attending the meeting, he comes face-to-face with the people behind the keyboards. Fans who have followed Edelman’s journey with the show may recognize his love for basketball, specifically a “Little Tikes Basketball Hoop” which Edelman brought with him to shoot hoops before performing. It’s a lot of fun, so we recommend purchasing your own basketball hoop stand, to release some stress and have fun during the workday, or at home!*
*Depends how cool your boss is.
The classic story of The Wizard of Oz is transformed in this Mexican folk-infused musical that follows Dora, a contemporary Latiné teenager who struggles with her family’s ideas about tradition and dreads her impending quinceañera! But when she is swept to the magical land of Oz, she learns how to celebrate her unique rhythm and embrace her cultural identity! In honor of the production, we suggest gifting ruby heels! Start the new year off with style as you work every room you enter like it’s a runway! Though they may not take you home after clicking them, you’ll still be the ruby of the room!
CLUE
The board game, of course!
Fans of the cult-classic 1985 film were thrilled to see Clue live on stage at the Ahmanson Theatre! Clue is the ultimate whodunit that left our audiences dying of laughter and guessing until the final twist. Clue is based on everyone’s favorite childhood board game, which we recommend as the perfect holiday gift! Gather your friends and family and spend the holidays playing this nail-biting game!
Based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress is not the first show to come to CTG that draws inspiration from classic fables or farm-to-table favorites. Let’s take a look back at previous productions!

We wanted to share the sad news that our great friend and theatre lover Joni Benickes, wife of Board Member Miles, passed away on the morning of October 3. Joni and Miles have been coming to shows at CTG for more than 30 years and have been great advocates and supporters of our art and our artists, particularly the programs at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. As the daughter of a famous studio producer, Joni grew up on Hollywood studio lots before going on to run her own catering company and seeing just about every theatre and arts performance Los Angeles had to offer.
Our hearts go out to Miles who first met Joni as her tennis instructor before becoming her great life and adventure partner. We also share our sympathies with their children Allyn, Torrie, Erika, and Jason, as well as their grandchildren, who are all frequently seen at the theatre themselves, thanks to Joni and Miles passing down their love of theatre to them.
Miles, you and your wonderful family have the great support and love from all of us here at CTG during this difficult time. And Joni, love to you, always.
Sincerely, Center Theatre Group Leadership

A STRANGE LOOP MERCH
Hell-bent on breaking free of his own self-perception, A Strange Loop follows Usher, a young, gay, Black writer who hates his day job and spends his time writing a musical about a young, gay, Black writer who’s writing a musical about a young, gay, Black writer...you get the idea. The award-winning show arrived at the Ahmanson Theatre to enamored fans! In celebration, we recommend purchasing MERCH for A Strange Loop, which is available online! Fans of the show loved showing their pride for the show!
FUNNY GIRL A Vanity Mirror
Well hello, GORGEOUS!
The long-awaited revival of Funny Girl arrived at the Ahmanson Theatre earlier this year and had audiences on their feet with timeless classics such as “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” and “People.” The bittersweet comedy follows the story of real-life comedian, Fanny Brice, a Jewish girl from the Lower East Side who dreamed of a life on the stage and made it! As the show opens, Fanny is seen in her dressing room applying makeup in front of a vanity mirror. That’s why we recommend gifting a vanity mirror stand for your loved ones. If life is a performance, then you have to prepare your best with the best. Get every detail down with an up-close mirror that looks gorgeous in any room you place it. After all, anyone can be the greatest star, you just have to play the part.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
1973, 1990, 1999
William Shakespeare’s own spin on a classic fairy tale was produced twice at the Ahmanson and once at the Mark Taper Forum, with a script that featured pea-related puns spoken to the character Peaseblossom (an old word for the flower on a pea plant!).
Into the Woods
AHMANSON, 1989, 2002, 2017, 2023
We hope you find this guide useful, and that you spend the holidays with those you hold dear. Thank you for joining us here at Center Theatre Group! Happy holidays and happy new year! Now, enjoy the show!
Largely regarded as one of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpieces, it’s no wonder this perfect blending of fairy tale and veggie tale played at the Ahmanson four times. Into the Woods’ cast of fantastical characters had to fight against peril brought upon them by a beanstalk!
Once Upon a Mattress
AHMANSON, 2024-2025
Lifted up by its fanciful and foodie predecessors, Once Upon a Mattress is now at the Ahmanson following its successful Broadway run!
URIE: How long do you stay in?
FOSTER: Not very long. But I always light candles. I have two candles and I have big magnesium flakes I put in there and I have aromatherapy stuff and I sit in there for a while. I use it like a transition.
URIE: I mean I can sort of sleep anytime anywhere. I’ll sleep on the floor in my dressing room. My partner always jokes that we’ll decide to go to bed and we’ll get ready for bed and he takes longer and when he walks in the room I’m already asleep. But the great thing about this show is for opening night we got these eye masks. So I usually have that on and I usually play a rainstorm.
FOSTER: I love earplugs. Earplugs, sound machine, air purifier, darkness. And I have two dogs, they’re in the room and they make noise. They’re not allowed in the bed because one of them eats the covers.
URIE: We have a cat and a dog, and the cat stays in the living room because he sings at night. *Screeching cat noise.* He’s twenty. He’s a belter. And the dog will burrow, she’s a little dog.
Who is your favorite prince or princess? (Besides Prince Dauntless and Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, of course).
FOSTER: I’m old school, I love Belle. She read books. It’s interesting because fairy tales have changed. Being that I have a seven-year-old daughter, she doesn’t really care about princesses or princes. But what I love about the newer heroines that most of them isn’t about finding a boy, it’s about finding friendship or family or tradition. Like Moana is pretty cool.
URIE: I fell in love with musical theatre watching the old PBS Into The Woods. The Princes in that were so funny that I was like, ‘Hey, princes can be funny!’ I never realized that... princes are usually dull, it’s usually the princess’ story and the Princes were so funny and the actors were so incredible.
What are you excited for in LA?
FOSTER: In-N-Out Burger!
URIE: For me, it’s Mexican food.
FOSTER: And the food in general, I love the food in LA.
URIE: Grand Central Market is the best, it’s not far from the Ahmanson. I love going [there] because you don’t have to make a decision before you get there.
FOSTER: There’s a magical kingdom that I will probably have to go to out there. I do love Disneyland. I also like getting out and hiking and going for a run...being outside is going to be amazing.
“It’s a joyful show. There’s no cynicism in it. People like to call it a joy bomb.”
–Sutton Foster
What do you love about the show?
URIE: I think [audiences] think they know what the show is going to be and it’s much funnier, much sweeter, and much better than they think. When the overture starts and the curtain goes up all of a sudden there’s bright, beautiful lights and this lush score with this great orchestra, I think they are transported into this fairy tale and they really don’t expect it and I don’t think they expect how funny it’s going to be.
FOSTER: It’s a joyful show. There’s no cynicism in it. People like to call it a joy bomb. And you look out in the audience and then to hear the little kids laughing— that's the greatest thing, the little giggles.

current cost-of-living crisis.
“[When] my dad tells a story, it’s a tragic story, but he says it with so much love, he sees it as an act of love,” Garcia said. “So, I want to explore the love within poverty so that it is not just a tragedy.” Since these pieces will be told through puppetry and masks, Garcia has been developing what the faces of the characters will look like— and to have the audience feel reflected in the characters.
“There’s something about [puppetry] that suspends disbelief, suspends time and reality, in a different way than traditional theatre does,” she said. “I want [the audience] to experience the magic of seeing an object come to life.”

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES
Support from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors plays an invaluable role in the successful operation of The Music Center.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
As a steward of The Music Center of Los Angeles County, we recognize that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh and Chumash Peoples. We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants — past, present and emerging — as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters. We acknowledge that settler colonization resulted in land seizure, disease, subjugation, slavery, relocation, broken promises, genocide and multigenerational trauma. This acknowledgment demonstrates our responsibility and commitment to truth, healing and reconciliation and to elevating the stories, culture and community of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles County.
Janice Hahn Supervisor, Fourth District
Hilda L. Solis Supervisor, First District
Lindsey P. Horvath Chair, Third District
Kathryn Barger Chair Pro Tem, Fifth District
Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District
We are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these ancestral lands. We are dedicated to growing and sustaining relationships with Native peoples and local tribal governments, including (in no particular order) the:
• Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians
• Gabrielino Tongva Indians of California Tribal Council
• Gabrieleno/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians
• Gabrieleño Band of Mission Indians-Kizh Nation
• San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
• San Fernando Band of Mission Indians
