A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

DAZZLING ORANGE COUNTY Forever summer. That is the O.C. no matter the season— whether it’s snowing in the nearby mountains, the bougainvillea and jacaranda are blooming or a fall breeze is gently sweeping the landscape, which in Orange County might pass for weather. For visitors and residents, it’s a vacation yearround, with all the freedom and sunshine, play and relaxation, unwinding and recharging that implies. Consider one of the world’s most renowned luxe lifestyles, both sophisticated and laid-back, America’s most successful and pleasurable shopping destinations, a thriving arts scene and some of the finest dining in Southern California, and you get some idea of why I love Orange County. Welcome to paradise and everything it has to offer. Your hotel is the perfect place to start. Some things I love about Orange County are timeless—notably the more than 40 miles of photogenic and fantastically varied beaches and coves. Some things only get better. The Happiest Place on Earth, for instance, gets more magical.

I love HangTime (actually, I’m petrified) and all the other coasters at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park. The summer nights are forever, too. I love the cocktails and sunset views from the rooftop lounges along the coast and the cool clubbing at STC Anaheim GardenWalk and the Triangle in Costa Mesa. I love that our rock history includes Dick Dale, Gwen Stefani and Social Distortion—and that we can hear Ariana Grande at the Honda Center. I love that so many of the county’s finest restaurants are in shopping destinations and hotels, big pluses for visitors. There are reasons celebs such as Justin Bieber and sports legends Kobe Bryant and Teemu Selänne have homes here; you’ll likely discover many of those reasons during your visit. In fact, you might consider extending your stay. Enjoy your summer here in the O.C., whatever season the rest of the world thinks it is. I hope that this time and next, you’ll find it all as amazing as I do.

Beaches

Orange County’s coast is among the world’s most beautiful. Half a dozen cities—from Dana Point and San Clemente at the south end to Seal Beach in the north—present an array of beach experiences, from intimate coves to sandy expanses, many visible from Coast Highway. Laguna Beach features distinctive beaches such as Victoria Beach, which has a tower fit for Rapunzel; Thousand Steps Beach actually has 200-plus steps, and they offer plenty of exercise. Huntington

South Coast Plaza

Dubbed the ultimate shopping resort, the center is the nation’s highest-grossing planned retail venue. It also has its highest concentration of shopping’s iconic names—you’d be hard-pressed to name elite retailers that aren’t here. At 3 million square feet, it includes high-end anchors such as Bloomingdale’s and hundreds of boutiques, among them Givenchy, new Zimmermann, left, and a spectacularly redone Louis Vuitton. More than 30 restaurants include renowned dumpling destination Din Tai Fung and new Knife Pleat for contemporary French. Bowers Museum

Bowers develops blockbuster exhibitions with renowned venues around the world, among them the Shanghai and British museums. The county’s largest museum is also its most diverse. More than 130,000 artifacts and works of art make up collections of pre-Columbian art, Asian art, art of the Pacific, art of Africa and Orange County history. Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands and Ancient Arts of China: A 5,000-Year Legacy are ongoing. The world’s indigenous peoples, and cultural art, remain the focus, yet many consider the California-themed exhibitions to be the highlight. 2002 N. Main St., Santa Ana, 714.567.3600, bowers.org

“If you can dream it, you can do it,” Walt Disney once said; the Imagineers dreamed up Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for Disneyland, and it’s Disney’s most ambitious and impressive themed land expansion ever. Sleeping Beauty Castle shimmers anew. Adjacent sister park Disney California Adventure unveiled Pixar Pier and its heart-stopping Incredicoaster. Guardians of the Galaxy—Mission: Breakout! is another recent addition; Soarin’ Around the World and spectacular light-and-water show World of Color never get old. Mission San Juan Capistrano

Listen to the mission bells. View museum exhibits. Take any of a number of tours, including audio tours downloadable to your smartphone. The jewel of the California missions, the birthplace of Orange County, was founded by Spanish padres in 1776, the seventh of the state’s 21 missions. The Great Stone Church was begun in 1796, completed in 1806 and destroyed by an earthquake in 1812. The Serra Chapel is the oldest church in California. You can visit all of those sites, as well as the padres’ quarters, soldiers’ barracks and cemetery, and wander about 10 acres of lush gardens and fountains. A few descendants of the indigenous Juaneño tribe still work at the mission. 26801 Ortega Hwy., San Juan Capistrano, 949.234.1300, missionsjc.com

Segerstrom Center for the Arts

The center offers the best in the performing arts. This season, Segerstrom Hall, its largest venue, offers Broadway shows including Mean Girls and A Bronx Tale and dance troupes such as the American Ballet Theatre. The Cesar Pelli-designed Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall is home to the Pacific Symphony and its music director, Carl St.Clair; touring ensembles and instrumentalists presented by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County; and the Pacific Chorale and new artistic director Robert Istad. There’s jazz in both halls. More intimate presentations—cabaret and chamber music—take place in the Judy Morr and Samueli theaters. The striking Julianne and George Argyros Plaza offers free outdoor performances year-round. 600

Fashion Island

The outdoor coastal center offers the most relaxed and sophisticated shopping experience as can be imagined. Boutiques such as Piajeh for eveningwear, stunning Hyde Park Jewelers and Rodd & Gunn for men complement anchors Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. Swimwear options are impressive, among them ViX by Paula Hermanny and SwimSpot, the nation’s largest dedicated swim retailer. Best of all? A complimentary personal shopper—no obligation and no tips (see page 26). Sushi Roku and Fig & Olive make it a fine-dining destination. The Lot, a luxury cinema, offers dining options, too. getting personal Fashion Island personal shopper and stylist Sara Aplanalp.

LEISURELY STROLL around a sophisticated alfresco shopping center is a highlight of the good life in Newport Beach. With its SoCal sunshine and ocean breezes, and impeccably curated selection of brands and boutiques, there may be no better such destination than Fashion Island—especially for those who enjoy browsing and buying. But what if you’re one of those among us who is acquisitionally challenged—who finds shopping a chore, doesn’t know Chanel from Shinola, and wears go-to garments that predate Google? No worries. Sara Aplanalp—Fashion Island’s lead personal shopper and stylist for six years— makes wardrobe updates easy for the retailreluctant. And her services, which are complimentary, are a perfect fit for fashionistas, too. The charming Aplanalp dedicates herself both to longtime clients who come in like clockwork and one-time clients with a fashion emergency— such as the executive who split the seat of his suit trousers on his way to a day of back-to-back meetings and needed a new pair within the hour. Aplanalp took his information over the phone, ran to a Fashion Island store to purchase pants that would coordinate with his jacket, had the store sew a temporary hem to his measurements, and drove in the rain to deliver them before the man’s first meeting. “You really saved my behind,” he told her as she delivered the goods.

Resolving such sartorial crises is a crucial component of the service, Aplanalp says, “but the majority of my clients live locally and visit Fashion Island frequently. “It’s wonderful to work with long-term clients who have trusted us for years, from their prom through their bridal shower to buying a dress as mother of the bride—and all the seasonal wardrobe updates in between.” She also helps visitors staying at nearby hotels and resorts who want to fit in with stylish locals. “Our signature ‘coastal chic’ look is an effortless but still pulled-together style,” she says. “Fashion Island has more than 100 boutiques and brands available to put together this look. Some visitors gravitate toward boutiques and California-based brands; others prefer larger stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s or Nordstrom.” Aplanalp has been in fashion her entire career, which has included working in New York with fashion magazines and designers. Gaining access to her savvy aesthetic is simple: Call her. “The first step is a consultation to go over details and gain a complete understanding of what items or looks the client is seeking,” she says. That generally includes the budget. “I present options within those guidelines, but it’s also my job to encourage clients to step outside their comfort zones by suggesting different options and exposing them to up-and-coming brands and trends.”

The next step is to meet Aplanalp at one of the stores or boutiques she suggests. There, she’ll have set out in the fitting rooms a few well-put-together looks in the sizes that the client has provided. It’s an unhurried and stress-free experience. It’s also a VIP experience. Aplanalp knows the managers, so clients receive immediate and enthusiastic attention. It’s like being a preferred customer, even for those who’ve never been to the store, let alone bought anything there. Hate shopping? The process is greatly expedited by having preselected items in correct sizes ready to be tried on. Love shopping? Though Aplanalp recommends at least two hours for a session, she can also arrange a longer retail adventure exploring the center’s shops, boutiques and department stores. “Our personal shopping service accommodates groups, too—including families or friends vacationing together,” she says. “Our clients often put a day of shopping and lunch on their itinerary.” A personal shopper can recommend makeup, hair, beauty and other services available at Fashion Island, too. “Everything is at your fingertips,” Aplanalp says. “I also make dining recommendations and book reservations.” Did we mention it’s all free? Except the clothes, of course. And there’s no minimum that must be spent to use the service. “I love to see my clients leave with a smile,” Aplanalp says, smiling herself. “Curating memorable experiences makes me happy.”

A SELECT GROUP OF COMMUNITIES ACROSS AMERICA —New

York’s Upper East Side, Palm Beach and Beverly Hills come to mind—are iconic expressions of luxury living. In Orange County, Newport Beach has that reputation as an exclusive enclave, especially on the coveted Balboa Peninsula. The closer to the waterfront, the more lavish the homes. ¶ One sleek, glass-clad residence sold for just over $35 million as we went to press, edging out the previous record for a Newport Harbor home, that of actor Nicolas Cage more than a decade earlier. ¶ Coldwell Banker agent Tim Smith considers the 12,710-square-foot, four-level East Bay Avenue home the best built in the county during his 25-year career. ¶ “You dream about having a listing like this one,” Smith says. “It’s my Super Bowl of listings.

“There are more billionaires living on Newport Bay than any other place,” he says, noting how rare it is to find a 90-foot triple-wide waterfront lot like the one accommodating this residence. New construction in the neighborhood is also rare, given the arduous process of municipal entitlements and state Coastal Commission approvals. The home, completed in 2018, defies the odds and represents the ultimate in peninsula living. At a time when the overall luxury market was softening, Smith says, bayfront homes continued to command top dollar. “There’s a connection to the ocean you experience when you live on the harbor that you can’t get anywhere else,” Smith says. The veteran agent reports a migration of super-affluent buyers to the harbor side of the peninsula, which he dubs “Billionaires’ Bay.” Smith generated unprecedented publicity for this Newport Beach listing when he released a music video

titled “Teach Me How to Duffy.” A Duffy is an electric cruising boat ubiquitous in Newport Harbor; the song was a riff on the 2010 single “Teach Me How to Dougie” by rappers Mr. Swag and Smoove da General of Cali Swag District. Both of those artists appear in the video, and Smith himself was coaxed into performing for the production, which went viral. “About 50 national media outlets picked up the video immediately,” recalls Smith, who claims that in seven months it had been viewed 11.7 million times. “This film blew every metric. When marketing is done effectively, selling is superfluous,” he muses, reflecting on the value of online efforts in today’s real estate industry. The residence was designed by architect Robert Sinclair, well known for opulent residential commissions in Beverly Hills, Bel-Air and along the Orange County coast. It was constructed by Patterson Custom Homes, a

builder with an impressive portfolio of Orange County luxury residences; interior design was by county-based Blackband Home & Design. Sinclair eschews a signature style, demonstrating instead versatility with both traditional and modern styles. His designs respond to a priority for privacy by high-net-worth individuals. “We want to provide the qualities of an estate, whether it’s 5 acres or a small beach house lot,” he says. “It has to be positioned so you can’t see your neighbors.” This home, built for real estate developer Craig Atkins and his active family, is a modern structure with clean lines and expansive glass but not the kind of minimalist glassand-concrete box that has become so popular along the county’s coast. Atkins has fond memories of summers in Nantucket, Massachusetts; he wanted the nostalgia and warmth of that locale as well as modernity. “This home is transitional, with traditional elements that transcend into a cleaner, crisper style,” Sinclair says. The house has restrained yet generous exterior detailing; interior materials create the connection to New England. “The client put so much energy, passion and money into the project,” Sinclair notes. “This is the kind of client you come across only once in a decade.” In addition to Atkins and his wife, Sinclair credits builder Andrew Patterson and interior designers Wendy and Greg Blackband for making the process rewarding. Patterson, who has built 365 custom homes, commends Atkins for getting the most out of his talented design and construction team. “The client made this project special,” the builder says. “He’s the most inspiring person I’ve ever come across.” Both Sinclair and Patterson describe the team as willing to leave egos at the door. Virtually every decision was made collaboratively, at regular meetings at the site throughout the three-year process of design. Patterson describes his own approach: “My philosophy is to let the architect and designers be creative, while my staff handles the minutiae of coordinating with the city, soils consultants and structural engineers,” he says. Notoriously hands-on, Patterson is known not only for a keen sense of design but also for a practically super-

natural intuition at the construction site. He is frequently found on the scaffolding checking details. Wendy Blackband, lead interior designer, confirms her colleagues’ portrayal—of a collaborative team of veteran designers executing the vision of a super-engaged client who acquired an eye for design through his own career in real estate development. “One challenge was harnessing that energy and understanding that every single thing we do has an effect on everything else,” recalls Blackband, who dedicated herself to maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. “The inspiration for our design was ‘Bel-Air meets Newport Beach’ and the idea of blending city sophistication with the comfort and casualness of living by the sea. “Another challenge was incorporating the essence of New England yet keeping the home modern, which required a balance of two very different styles.” She cites the selection of metallic Ann Sacks tiles— which one would not expect in a conventional Cape Cod home—on a bar-front in the great room. With their chevron pattern evoking tradition, the contemporary tiles achieved the desired balance of disparate styles. Another successful fusion of styles is represented by the dining room fireplace, a honed Zimbabwe granite element whose flush, minimalist design is decidedly modern but warmed à la New England through the application of shiplap around it.

Blackband cites the sheer size of the home as yet another factor complicating the project. “In a house this large, space planning is critical, and if you don’t get the scale right it will envelop you,” she explains. A critical part of the process in any commission is getting to know the clients; the Atkins family had much in common with her own, says Blackband, a native of Balboa Island. “We developed a relationship, getting to know how they live as a family and how they entertain.” One of the home’s more dramatic architectural features is a glass-ensconced, under-lit floating staircase ascending from the great room. Near that dazzling element, a 1,200-gallon saltwater aquarium that suits the home’s waterfront location adds another wow factor. Created and installed by L.A.-based Infinity Aquarium Design, the custom tank features state-of-the-art technology; its sophisticated life-support system is backed up by the home’s Tesla batteries. The aquarium project was inspired by the homeowners’ love for travel. “We utilized photos from their time spent scuba diving in the Caribbean to recreate some of their best moments underwater,” Infinity co-founder Nic Tiemens explains. Regarding the choice of materials, he says, “the acid-washed stainless steel blends the organic, interior design elements of the home with an exotic window into the underwater world.” Large skylights flood common areas with light; beamed, whitewashed ceilings and hardwood floors reinforce a flavor of New England that seamlessly harmonizes with the Newport Beach vibe. This being Southern California, boundaries between indoors and out are blurred, sometimes obliterated. When its expansive glass panels are withdrawn, the great room entirely opens up to outdoor living and dining spaces that overlook a saltwater infinity pool—one with underwater music, of course—constructed on a sea wall. A sandy beach and dock that can accommodate four sizable vessels (or eight Duffy boats) further connect this home to the carefree peninsula lifestyle. The kitchen is monochromatic, with white walls, cabinets and a massive faux marble island with waterfall edges, illuminated by a series of circular cage pendants. The glistening white island is paired with a second island whose contrasting stained-rift oak finish creates warmth and character. The kitchen’s backsplash is custom-cut Thassos marble; appliances are Miele and Sub-Zero, some hidden behind custom white panels.

9/18/19 12:18 PM

A second fully equipped kitchen, mobilized for entertaining the large numbers of guests this home easily accommodates, is in an adjoining room. Over the table in the nearby dining space hang a pair of large globe pendants, whose unique composition of metallic-rimmed circular pieces of recycled glass also embody both traditional and modern sensibilities. Blackband, who enjoys mixing up lighting styles, reports that nearly 50 different sources were used for fixtures throughout the house, ranging from midcentury Sputnik-inspired chandeliers to mobile-style constellations evocative of the work of Lindsey Adelman. Illuminating the Ann Sacks tile-adorned bar are a pair of glam beaded pendants from Ro Sham Beaux, a brand that promotes its eclectic style as “Charleston, South Carolina, meets Venice Beach, California.” Three bedrooms, an office and a massive master suite—complete with two fashion-boutique-sized walkin closets, luxurious bath with skylights and spa fea-

tures, sitting room, sunroom, and expansive terrace—are on the second level. The third level accommodates a bedroom suite with kitchenette and bar as well as a deck providing stunning views. This home is one of the few in the neighborhood to offer a fully improved basement—a tricky engineering feat on the peninsula—which encompasses a plush theater, game room, gym and another bar clad in blueand-white concrete tiles. Listing agent Smith reports that the home—currently the largest on the peninsula and the highest priced for new construction—appeals to Fortune 500 CEOs, international entrepreneurs and celebrities, as both a party house and family residence. “This is a one-of-a-kind project,” says architect Sinclair, citing its 90-foot water frontage, multiple levels and corner location as elements that are highly unlikely to ever come together again in Newport Beach. Do you know how to Duffy?

A MOVING EXPERIENCE

photographs by ANNE WATSON

introduction by BENJAMIN EPSTEIN

The sprinkling of salt, the drizzling of juice from a squeeze of lemon, the balletic pouring of sauce, the placing of a microherb for aesthetic impact.... The preparing and presenting of food is never static, yet until recently, food photography featuring movement seemed a novelty. Great photos always involve both art and technique, but nowhere are they such equal partners as when capturing motion—when movement is suspended, a moment is frozen, and otherwise imperceptible details become perceptible. The moment seems stretched: One gleans what comes before and immediately after. Capturing the art on a plate is one thing; capturing the art that goes into the art on the plate is another.

afternoon, locals and out-of-towners gather in a modest, colorfully decorated tasting room, sipping wines with evocative names such as Summer Breeze, Kiss of Life and Old Black Magic. Some nibble on artisan popcorn, others on charcuterie and cheese. All are engaged by what’s in the glass, which comes from Jason McClain’s boutique winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, on California’s Central Coast—unusual in that his McClain Cellars tasting room is in Laguna Beach in Southern California. McClain had his reasons and, after one year in business, the reasons have proved sound. “Laguna Beach gives me a tight-knit community in which to grow,” he says. “Laguna Beach gives me the ability to be distinctive and different.” McClain and his family—he and his wife, coproprietor Sofia, have three daughters—also live nearby in Coto de Caza. The tasting room’s location in Laguna Canyon has proved ideal. It’s on one of two roads in and out of the city, nestled among the summer art festivals and an easy stroll to the downtown “Village” and Main Beach. McClain Cellars is part of the Hive, a small but hip culinary, retail and creative center that has become the hub of canyon life. Also at the center are top-tier Italian restaurant Oliver’s Osteria next door, Laguna Beach Beer Co. and that most valuable of assets in a busy beach town: free parking! The tasting room features live music on weekends; special events include tapas pairings with local restaurants and blind tastings. Staffers act as concierges for visitors, arranging tables at restaurants such as acclaimed Harley that offer discounts to tasting room patrons. Above all, McClain says, “we help you experience and understand the difference between OPPOSITE: JASON M CCLAIN, PROPRIETOR OF M CCLAIN CELLARS AT THE HIVE IN LAGUNA BEACH

a cab, a petite syrah and a petit verdot.” Finding McClain wines you love is highly likely. Purchases can be delivered to a visitor’s hotel, packaged for travel as checked luggage or shipped home. The McClain Cellars vision is based on family as well as wine. “When you get married, there’s wine. If you have a child, there’s wine. When you meet with good friends, there’s wine,” McClain says. “Wine is alive. It’s always growing. It’s always getting better. No other spirit, no other beverage, has the joy and love of a 6,000-year relationship with human beings like wine has.” A passionate and charismatic speaker, McClain seems a natural for the screen or as a coach or motivational speaker. Been there, done that, it turns out. A successful 30-year career in dot-coms included several startups; McClain also served as consultant and life coach to leaders of many more. The serial entrepreneur’s projects have included a digital marketing agency, a design firm and even a do-it-yourself divorce website and app. He had a contract on the table for a television show on Amazon Prime. “At the time, I thought, ‘I’m successful. I’m at the top of my game ... but I’m not happy,’” he says. “I’m not doing something I truly love. “So ... I quit.” McClain turned down the lucrative TV contract, sold his companies and focused on something he was passionate about: wine. “I went into an industry I knew nothing about.” Well, not exactly nothing. According to McClain, he and Sofia had bought a plane so they could explore hidden corners of Napa Valley and the Central Coast. “We’d land at tiny, little airstrips, do some wine tasting, buy and fly cases back,” he recalls. The McClains made an enormous leap of faith: They founded their own winery. They bought 5 acres in the Santa Ynez Valley where they could grow their grapes, hired winemaker Dean Guzman (whose résumé includes Fess Parker and Terravant) and partnered with other growers to contribute to their proprietary blends.

That was in 2016. They made 1,500 cases of wine the first year—and were told they were crazy to produce so much. “I wasn’t worried about producing too much,” McClain says. “I just needed to make a great wine.” Was it great? He went on Facebook to invite people to come and taste it, which proved a savvy bit of digital marketing. “We had 150 people show up on our doorstep,” he says—by which he means literally on his doorstep. That first tasting and many that followed were held at the McClains’ home. “That was June 27, 2018: our first tasting, our first sales, our first wine club members and our first reviews,” McClain says. “By December, we’d grown our wine club to hundreds and were planning to open our first tasting room.” McClain Cellars debuted Feb. 29, 2019. It was an instant hit. “We went all in,” he says. “I want to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life is one of my favorite quotes, by Henry Thoreau.” He switches to life coach mode. “People don’t embrace change,” he says. “It’s a fundamental flaw in the human character. We don’t make change a priority. I made change a priority for my own life.” More tasting rooms are planned, including one on Balboa Island, where the harbor ferry picks up and drops off cars and passengers. As for the aforementioned evocative names of the McClain wines, every one has a story. “‘Summer Breeze’ is the 1976 song that was playing on the radio when I first fell in love,” McClain says. “‘Kiss of Life’ is the 1991 song by Sade that was playing when my wife and I had our very first kiss. My dad once sang ‘Old Black Magic’ on television.” And he wants every one to inspire a story. “Our lives are shaped and formed by significant emotional events,” McClain says. “When guests come to McClain Cellars, we want them to have an amazing experience. They take that home in a bottle of wine. When they open that bottle, it might be 30 degrees and snowing outside, but that experience comes rolling back. They remember how great Laguna Beach was— and how they can’t wait to come back.”

HATEVER YOU DO WHEN YOU set foot in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Disneyland’s new land, don’t—we repeat, don’t—ask anyone where you can build your own lightsaber. Though this is one of the most talked-about and fun experiences you can have at Galaxy’s Edge, the endeavor carries the risk of being discovered by the villainous military dictatorship the First Order; members of the rebel Resistance who run the venture suggest instead pretending you’re seeking to acquire scrap metal. Such role-playing is a hallmark of Galaxy’s Edge, which was inspired by the hugely popular Star Wars franchise, first introduced to the moviegoing world by creator George Lucas in 1977. The land, like the films, is set “a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away”—but on a planet called Batuu that has not appeared in any Star Wars movie, giving longtime fans and newbies alike the chance to discover a brand-new realm. Disneyland cast members interact with guests as Batuu residents; they were even given the opportunity to make up their characters’ backstories. Are they supporters of the Resistance or the First Order? And which are you? Don’t be surprised if a Stormtrooper or bounty hunter tries to find out where your allegiance lies. “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is, in a word, epic,” says Scott Trowbridge, Portfolio Creative Executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, which designs the Disney theme parks and additions worldwide. “It is the most authentic, the most immersive, the biggest single-land expansion we’ve ever done in Disney Parks’ history. It completely immerses you in the world of Star Wars.” (Walt Disney World in Florida also recently opened Galaxy’s Edge.) Epic, indeed. Galaxy’s Edge spans 14 acres—larger than 14 football fields—increasing Disneyland’s visitor capacity by 20 percent. The center of the action is Black Spire Outpost. The settlement is named for the petrified remains of trees that have experienced some sort of cataclysmic event, the nature of which is left for each Batuu visitor to imagine; the spires rise as high as 130 feet. A remote trading port on the edge of wild space, Black Spire Outpost has become a gathering place for smugglers, traders and adventurers as well as home base for the First Order. The terrain is rugged and barren—but visually compelling. The rock work, more than 200,000 square feet of it, is handcrafted and hand-painted. More than 7,000 props add color, texture and detail. “When our guests come to Galaxy’s Edge, I hope

they’ll feel they’ve walked straight into a real Star Wars location, filled with real Star Wars characters and real Star Wars adventures, and that they feel that invitation to not be just a spectator, but ... an active participant, to really live their own Star Wars story,” Trowbridge says. A shining—or rather, a seen-better-days—example of such participation is provided by the land’s Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction, a flight-simulator ride like Tomorrowland’s Star Tours ... to the max. Famously called “the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy” by Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), the battleship once piloted by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is now used to smuggle goods in an arrangement between Chewbacca and the pirate Hondo Ohnaka in exchange for supplies for the Resistance. Ohnaka, seen in the animated television series Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, was chosen for the attraction because Imagineers felt he would be more familiar to younger viewers. Groups of six riders—two pilots, two gunners and two engineers—work together in the cockpit as a team. One pilot steers left and right, the other up and down; the gunners fight off artillery; the engineers work to keep the ship functioning. The ship’s interior has been recreated meticulously from the films—an Imagineer traveled to London to tour the set of the Falcon used in Star Wars: The Force Awakens—and guests can pose for photos on board. Here, as elsewhere in Galaxy’s Edge, visitors hear music

by the Star Wars films’ composer John Williams, who created new themes and suites for the new land. Another attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, features a battle between the Resistance and the First Order in multiple settings traversed by multiple vehicles. Imagineers promise another epic, immersive experience, this one in the ruins of an ancient civilization where the Resistance has established encampments and is recruiting new fighters. Now, back to that lightsaber—er, scrap metal. At press time, the hand-built items cost $200 each plus tax to make. Reservations up to 14 days in advance for Savi's Workshop are strongly encouraged; builders number no more than 14 but can bring up to two guests each. Inside, participants choose from one of four themes— elemental nature; peace and justice; protection and defense; and power and control. Each utilizes different building materials: for elemental nature, for example, they include brylark tree wood, Rancor teeth and Cartusian whalebone, all taken from the Star Wars saga. The construction process takes about 20 minutes; there are about 120,000 variations possible. Guests can also build their own droids at the Droid Depot, for $99 plus tax, no reservations needed. Indeed, Galaxy’s Edge is a mecca for Star Warsinspired merchandise, much of it in the Marketplace, based on the open-air markets Imagineers visited in Morocco and Turkey. You can take home the galactic creatures known as loth-cats and Kowakian monkey-

lizards, or Jedi robes inspired by those worn by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Elsewhere in Black Spire Outpost, Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities offers exotic jewelry and crystals and preassembled lightsabers. All that shopping and First Order-fighting demands refreshment. The unquestionable drinking and snacking highlight is Oga’s Cantina. The cantina is the only public place in Disneyland that serves alcohol; if the droid in charge of music looks familiar, it’s because he’s the former Starspeeder 3000 pilot from Star Tours. Reservations can be made up to 14 days in advance. The outdoor Ronto Roasters offers wraps including a signature version with roasted pork and grilled sausage; Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo presents a variety of choices including chicken, shrimp and pork ribs. Wherever your Galaxy’s Edge visit leads, you’ll be enjoying an experience that’s innovative yet, in its own way, part of the grand Disney theme park tradition. Says Trowbridge, “When Disneyland first opened its doors, it gave guests an opportunity to do something they’d never had before: to step into these worlds of fantasy and imagination. “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is an extension of that same idea, that same vision Walt Disney had, about giving guests an opportunity to believe they were having these real experiences and believe they were becoming part of their favorite worlds. “I hope that if Walt were around today, he’d be proud of what we accomplished.”

Neighborhoods

ANAHEIM Disneyland put Anaheim—and Orange County—on the global map. Now it’s gone galactic! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is Disney’s largest-ever single-themed land expansion. California Adventure shares the spotlight, thanks to attractions such as new Pixar Land and the Incredicoaster. Between the parks is pedestrian eatertainment zone Downtown Disney. Nearby is STC Anaheim GardenWalk, an eatertainment center boasting the House of Blues, and the Anaheim Convention Center. The Anaheim Packing District includes dining at the Anaheim Packing House food hall and the Center Street Promenade. Angel Stadium is home of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball; the Honda Center hosts Anaheim Ducks ice hockey and pop acts such as Ariana Grande.

BUENA PARK Roller-coaster, fried-chicken and boysenberry-jam enthusiasts flock to Knott’s Berry Farm, above, which predates Disneyland as the nation’s first theme park. Its Ghost Town recently turned 75. What started as a berry stand along Highway 39 now centers on attractions for thrill-seekers— notably the Xcelerator coaster and new HangTime—as well as Camp Snoopy. Enjoy chicken dinners just outside the park. Fall brings Knott’s Scary Farm, summer the water park Soak City. Also along Beach Boulevard are family entertainment venues such as Medieval Times and Pirate’s Dinner Adventure and new eatertainment center the Source. Buena Park Downtown includes the enclosed Buena Park Mall.

COSTA MESA The county’s premier performingarts venues, some of the region’s finest dining destinations—including the county’s two Michelinstarred restaurants—and one of the nation’s most successful retail centers arguably make Costa Mesa the county’s heart and cultural soul. South Coast Plaza’s several hundred stores and boutiques represent the highest concentration of elite retailers anywhere. The center’s owners donated the land and most of the millions to build Segerstrom Center for the Arts—home of Segerstrom Hall, Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, Samueli Theater and future home of the Orange County Museum of Art—and South Coast Repertory theater. Isamu Noguchi’s California Scenario sculpture garden is nearby. The city’s other retail and dining draws include SoCo and the OC Mix; the Lab, above; and, opposite the Lab, the Camp.

DANA POINT Among the most picturesque cities in California, Dana Point combines Cape Cod style with a surf and yacht lifestyle. It’s best known for its harbor, above—2,500 yachts are in its two marinas— and as a departure point for whale- and dolphin-watching excursions, sport-fishing expeditions and trips to Catalina Island. Doheny State Beach is popular, too. The town and spots such as the Killer Dana surf break are named for 19th-century seafaring writer Richard Henry Dana, who described the headlands in his book Two Years Before the Mast. Classes at the Ocean Institute take place aboard a replica of the tall ship Pilgrim, on which Dana sailed. The dining scene has the wind at its back of late.

FULLERTON Fullerton used to be the city that visitors passed through on their way to Disneyland; these days, they might pass through Disneyland on their way to Fullerton. Music spills out from bars and breweries such as Bootlegger’s, above; dining options are many and varied; the shopping is distinctive and vintage. The city blends historic architectural styles and a savvy vibe, thanks to its university and city college. Plummer Auditorium presents concerts and shows. Fullerton Museum Center offers intriguing exhibits, including one devoted to native son and electric-guitar pioneer Leo Fender. Fullerton Arboretum is the county’s largest botanical garden. To the north is the beautifully renovated Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda.

HUNTINGTON BEACH Surf City USA has a surfer statue, a quirky surfer museum and a surfer walk of fame and hosts the U.S. Open of Surfing every summer. Pacific Coast Highway has undergone a spectacular transformation, thanks to luxe hotels and the Pacific City shopping and dining destination, above—but the beachy vibe remains. Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach are two of the cleanest beaches in California. The pier is one of the longest on the West Coast; nearby is the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, a bird-watching paradise. Main Street intersperses restaurants and surfwear shops. There are more attractions inland: Its Central Park and library are among the county’s finest; Bella Terra is a Tuscan-themed shopping destination; 5 Points Plaza is a winning neighborhood center.

IRVINE Irvine Spectrum Center, where the 405 and 5 freeways meet, is a shopping, dining and entertainment magnet with Moorish architecture that claims more visitors per year than Disneyland; you can’t miss its giant Ferris wheel, above, from the freeways. You’ll find more dining options at the Los Olivos Marketplace and Trade food hall. Irvine has been the nation’s safest city for a decade and its largest planned urban community, all of it impeccably manicured. Diamond Jamboree is an enclave of Asian eateries. Look for the tethered orange balloon to find the Orange County Great Park, whose other attractions include the state’s largest iceskating facilities. The University of California’s Irvine campus is also huge.

LAGUNA BEACH The beaches and coves along this stretch of the coast are stunning, chief among the lures that first drew artists to the now sophisticated village. The city boasts the county’s most expensive real estate—Justin Bieber owns its priciest parcel—but art remains its soul. Galleries are everywhere. Laguna Art Museum offers provocative exhibitions. Crowds jam the town each summer as they head to the art festivals along Laguna Canyon Road. At the Pageant of the Masters, volunteers remain motionless to re-create artistic masterpieces. Laguna Playhouse presents theater fare from comedic to profound. Fine restaurants and one-of-a-kind boutiques abound.

ORANGE Plaza Square, the picturesque traffic circle—actually an oval— is at the center of Old Towne Orange, bustling with antique shops. Older buildings are steadfastly preserved, so the historic district appears often in movies and commercials. Homes date from the late 1800s to the 1940s. Chapman University, founded in 1861, offers the on-campus Musco Center for the Arts, above, and the off-campus Hilbert Museum of California Art. To the west is the Outlets at Orange, where the likes of Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue have upscale discount venues. Farther west, in Garden Grove, is spectacularly renovated Christ Cathedral. To the east is the equestrian neighborhood Orange Park Acres.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO Orange County’s birthplace reveals a vast panorama of history: the Shoshone tribe of Indians; the founding in 1776 of the jewel of California missions by a Spanish expedition; the Mexican rancho era in the 19th century; the area’s development in the 20th century into an agricultural center that preserved its heritage; and the charming, sophisticated but still laid-back burg of the 21st century. Los Rios Street, above, is much as it was two centuries ago, and the original families still own many of the homes. Downtown retains the distinctive flavor of the rancheros. Homes in the $10 million-plus range and lavish horse stables dot the hills above downtown. FOR WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY,   SEE WHERE TRAVELER ORANGE COUNTY   MAGAZINE OR SOCALPULSE.COM

SANTA ANA Long known primarily as the county seat, the city now has a hip factor and a vibrant night scene. It’s dedicated to the arts: Bowers Museum mounts blockbuster exhibitions in collaboration with museums around the world; downtown has a thriving contemporary art scene amid its restaurants and bars. Colorful East End Promenade along 4th Street includes the Yost Theater, a live-music venue. The Civic Center’s Old County Courthouse has been used in dozens of movies. MainPlace is a million-square-foot shopping center. The Discovery Cube science center, above, is nearby. Santa Ana is Orange County’s only city with its own zoo.

NEWPORT BEACH A harbor lined with gorgeous homes with docks for yachts ... wide, sandy beaches ... huge homes on the bluffs and hills with endless ocean views.... Newport Beach is an oceanfront paradise. Balboa Peninsula and seven manmade islands house the rich and often famous. Summer beach visitors along the Newport peninsula number more than a million. Relaxed and sophisticated Fashion Island, one of the county’s premier retail destinations, and Corona del Mar Plaza are in Newport Center. Find other distinctive shopping experiences along the coast in Lido Marina Village, on charming Balboa Island and in lovely Corona del Mar. To the south are the beaches and trails of Crystal Cove State Park, above, and, near affluent Newport Coast, dining and shopping at Crystal Cove Shopping Center.

PROVENANCE Chef-owner Cathy Pavlos’ menu is inspired by Italy and translated through the clean and fresh prism of California. Though the restaurant’s décor suggests a contemporary Napa Valley farmhouse, its reclaimed wood comes from a 19th-century barn in Pennsylvania and the dining tables were handmade by Amish craftsmen. Adjacent to the patio is a spectacular raised-bed garden that provides not only inspiration but much of the produce, notably in the hyper-fresh salads. The scratch kitchen uses local, organic and natural products as well as protein sources raised wild or cage-free; seafood is sustainable. The wine list features California boutique properties as well as Old World appellations; the bar program highlights seasonal creative cocktails. L (Tu-F), D (Tu-Su), Br (Su).
