GREETINGS

THE OPENING NIGHT COMMITTEE CHAIRS

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl! Tonight’s concert kicks off the LA Phil’s exciting season at Southern California’s most iconic venue, and we are delighted to share this momentous occasion with an audience of generous supporters of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have the multi-talented singer, songwriter, and pianist John Legend return to the Bowl’s stage this evening, performing with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins. The concert will also feature student musicians from the LA Phil’s signature education program, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). YOLA students made their Hollywood Bowl debut 10 years ago and they have been wowing audiences here every year since. The program is the centerpiece of the LA Phil’s robust suite of learning and community engagement initiatives that annually

serve more than 150,000 children and families across Southern California. Together, we are realizing Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s vision of an orchestra that touches the lives of everyone in our community. Your attendance at Opening Night helps make this work and so much more possible for the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl. We hope you enjoy this special evening, as we embark on another summer of unforgettable nights under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl! Sincerely, Kawanna Brown Andrea Chao-Kharma Jonathan and Monique Kagan Joseph Plascencia Opening Night Committee Chairs

WELCOME TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

Simon Woods

Welcome to Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl! For many of us, this beloved annual tradition marks the beginning of summer and the start of another great season of music under the stars. This year, the inimitable John Legend joins us for an evening we’re sure to remember with affection and awe for years to come. He is one of only 15 artists ever to win Emmy®, Grammy®, Oscar®, and Tony awards, and he will kick off the summer with style, accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Thomas Wilkins, plus a sensational fireworks display. Proceeds from Opening Night benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Learning and Community programs, which serve more than 150,000 children and their families each year. Taking pride of place among these programs is YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s

signature initiative, and a program that is beloved by everyone in the LA Phil family. We’re thrilled that students and alumni from YOLA are joining us on stage tonight, performing alongside the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The LA Phil’s commitment to young people is a central important part of our mission, and we are so grateful to you for coming out to help us continue this important work. Thank you for supporting great music and the LA Phil as we launch our 98th season at the Hollywood Bowl. We hope to see you many more times throughout what promises to be another extraordinary summer. Simon Woods Chief Executive Officer Los Angeles Philharmonic Association

at the Getty Villa

Written & Directed by Aaron Posner Music by Cliff Eberhardt A reimagining of Philoctetes by Sophocles Co-Produced by Round House Theatre

A bold new version of Sophocles’s timeless tale of hurting—and healing. The wounded Philoctetes (Phil) has suffered alone on a desert island for years, stranded there by Odysseus. But now Odysseus needs Phil’s magic weapons to win the Trojan War and enlists Achilles’s daughter Nia to help make peace. Director/adapter Aaron Posner creates an irreverent, spiritual, musical exploration about the wounds we carry, the ones we cause, and the redeeming power of human connection.

FUTURE BOUND

YOLA’s Graduates on What the Program Means to Them

Tonight, more than 30 players from Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) will perform side-by-side with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. These talented young players represent a small fraction of the more than 1,200 students who now participate in Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s signature initiative. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. The future of classical music in the United States is being shaped by the students of YOLA and programs like it across the country. YOLA’s alumni attend music programs and conservatories including Oberlin College, the Peabody Institute, Eastman School of Music, and UCLA.

Students who do not choose to pursue music are attending two- and four-year universities around the country at an extremely high rate. Many of them are first in their families to do so. A handful of YOLA’s recent graduates shared with us their hopes for the future: Madison Centeno, a YOLA at HOLA oboist will study oboe performance at Cal State University, Long Beach next year: “I have learned many things that I could talk about all day, but something YOLA has really instilled in me is the ability to be open-minded, positive, and determined. Before joining YOLA, I used to be very timid and reserved, but throughout my nine-year commitment with YOLA, I have learned that stepping out of my comfort zone is beneficial. Today, I express what I believe, approach people, and seek out opportunities that help me become a better person.”

Emperatriz “Magy” Hernandez, a YOLA at EXPO Center violist, will attend The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University next year to study viola performance. “When I attend music camps, I’m excited to get out to meet new people, expand my musical skills, and get out of my comfort zone. The longer the music camp, the better I become acquainted with the musical world outside of YOLA. It shows me my flaws and makes me want to improve my playing and my personality. Peabody is like a four-year summer camp and a new chapter of my life, which I’m ready to begin. But most of all, I am ready to encounter the hard repertoire! It’s very rewarding when we can enjoy the fruits of our hard labor.”

Diana Meza, a YOLA at EXPO Center violinist, will attend Harvard University next fall and major in environmental Science and Public Policy, with a secondary in Social Studies. “YOLA has really taught me how to find purpose in what I do. I first entered the program set on being a mechanical engineer, but through the years, I’ve witnessed my peers’ passion for classical music, assumed mentorship roles for younger violinists, and broadened my own curiosity and creativity through music. My experiences at YOLA have helped me recognize how multifaceted everything is and the great impact that anyone’s actions can have. As I head off to college now, I’m much more aware of my own potential to bring about positive change in the world and that I must always be mindful of who my work will affect and how.” To learn more about YOLA, please visit laphil.com/YOLA. YOLA is a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Harmony Project, Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), the EXPO Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility, Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and Beyond the Bell. Leadership support for the LA Phil’s Learning and Community Initiatives is provided by The Peggy Bergmann YOLA Endowment Fund, Andy & Bill Concerts LLP, Anonymous (2), The Walt Disney Company, Los Angeles Philharmonic Committee, Rob Lovelace and Alicia Miñana, Lee and Hope Landis Warner YOLA Student Fund, Max H. ABOUT THE ARTISTS

JOHN LEGEND Ohio-born John Legend is a critically acclaimed, multi-award-winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter. His work has garnered 10 Grammy® Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe® Award, and a Tony® Award, among many others. He earned an Emmy® for his performance in the title role of NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, making him one of only 15 “EGOT” winners in history. While in college, Legend was introduced to Lauryn Hill, who hired him to play piano on her track “Everything Is Everything,” and shortly thereafter he began to play shows around the Philadelphia area, eventually expanding his audience base to New York, Boston, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. After college, Legend was introduced to then up-and-coming hip-hop artist Kanye West, who quickly signed Legend to his G.O.O.D. Music imprint and hired him to sing vocal hooks on some of his music. Legend started gaining momentum through a series of similar collaborations with established artists, adding vocals to an impressive list of chart-topping hits including West’s “All of the Lights,” Jay-Z’s “Encore,” and back-up vocals on Alicia Keys’ 2003 song, “You Don’t Know My Name.” Legend’s debut album, Get Lifted, was released in December of 2004 through Columbia Records. The critically acclaimed album spawned the artist’s first hit single,

“Ordinary People,” and scored Legend multiple Grammy Awards in 2006, including Best R&B Album, Best New Artist, and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. The follow up was 2006’s platinum-selling Once Again, which brought Legend another Grammy (Best Male R&B Performance), for his single “Heaven,” and included collaborations with Kanye West, will.i.am, and Raphael Saadiq. Legend’s next release was 2008’s Evolver, led by the hit single “Green Light,” featuring Andre 3000. His 2010 collaboration with the Roots, Wake Up, won the Grammy for Best R&B Album a year later. Legend’s highly acclaimed fourth studio album, Love in the Future, features “All of Me,” Legend’s highest-selling and charting song to date, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on both Mainstream Top 40 and Rhythmic charts. In 2015, Legend won his first Academy Award, first Golden Globe Award, and won the 2015 Critic’s Choice Award for his song “Glory,” which he wrote and performed with Common, for the film Selma. Soon after, he won his first Tony for Jitney for Best Revival of a Play. In 2016, he released his fifth studio album, Darkness and Light, which he toured to sold out audiences around the globe. Produced by Blake Mills, the album received rave reviews and featured collaborations with Chance the Rapper and Brittany

Howard. Most recently, Legend recorded his first holiday album, A Legendary Christmas, released on October 26, 2018. Throughout his career, Legend has worked to make a difference in the lives of others. In 2007, he launched the Show Me Campaign (ShowMeCampaign.org), an initiative that focuses on education as a key to break the cycle of poverty. The 2010 BET Humanitarian of the Year Award, the 2009 CARE Humanitarian Award for Global Change, the 2009 Bishop John T. Walker Distinguished Humanitarian Service Award from Africare, and the 2011 Harvard Foundation Artist of the Year Award recognize Legend’s efforts and leadership in this arena. In 2015, Legend initiated the #FREEAMERICA campaign; a campaign designed to change the national conversation of our country’s misguided policies and to make a change in America’s criminal justice system. Legend also serves as one of the principles for Get Lifted Film Co., a film and television production company based in Los Angeles. Get Lifted Film Co. served as Executive Producers on the HBO documentary Southern Rites, Pop Network docu-series Sing It On, WGN America’s series Underground, and feature films such as Southside with You and La La Land.

YOUTH ORCHESTRA LOS ANGELES Through Gustavo Dudamel’s YOUTH ORCHESTRA LOS ANGELES (YOLA) program – inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema – the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to more than 1,200 students from vulnerable communities, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. YOLA provides each student, from the ages of 6 to 18, with a strong musical and social foundation through participation in 12-15 hours of programming each week. With YOLA sites in South L.A., the Rampart District, East L.A., and Westlake/MacArthur Park, YOLA engages students from more than 200 schools in L.A. County. Music study is complemented by leadership development opportunities, parent workshops, and performances – both in the community and in world-class venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.

Located in South Los Angeles and founded with the Harmony Project in 2007 as the first YOLA site, YOLA at EXPO Center is a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Harmony Project, and the EXPO Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility. YOLA at HOLA is located in the Rampart District, one of L.A.’s most densely populated and diverse neighborhoods. Founded in 2010, this program is a partnership of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA).

Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall; in many other locations throughout Southern California; on national and international television broadcasts; and alongside the greatest artists. YOLA at Camino Nuevo, located in the Westlake/MacArthur Park area of Los Angeles, is the first in-school YOLA model, allowing the LA Phil to bring music instruction into the school day and extend it afterschool. Launched in 2017, this program will serve all students in grades K-12 at the Kayne Siart Campus and Miramar Campus of Camino Nuevo Charter Academy.

With major support from Supervisor Hilda Solis, YOLA at Torres began in 2014 and engages children in the County’s First District in East L.A. YOLA at Torres receives logistics and infrastructure support from the East L.A. Performing Arts Magnet and Beyond the Bell. YOLA’s young musicians have performed on great stages all over the world, including the LA Phil’s two iconic venues – the Hollywood
