GREETINGS

WELCOME FROM THE OPENING NIGHT COMMITTEE CO - CHAIRS We could not be more thrilled to welcome you to Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl—a celebration 100 years in the making. A century ago, Southern California music lovers gathered together under the stars to inaugurate the first summer-long orchestral music festival in the country. Today, we keep the tradition they started alive and well, at what has grown to become one of the world’s most iconic concert venues. We are delighted to share this momentous occasion with an audience of generous supporters of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, who make everything we do on stage and in the community possible. And the talent on display this evening speaks to the incredible community of

musicians and artists who love the Bowl just like we do: Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gwen Stefani, Branford Marsalis, Eric Revis, Matthew Howard, María Dueñas, Roberto Bolle, Tiler Peck, Let It Happen, the UCLA and USC marching bands, and, of course, extraordinary players from YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles). Dudamel’s signature initiative and the centerpiece of the LA Phil’s Learning and Community Engagement programs, YOLA provides 1,500 musicians ages five through 18 with free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic support, and performance opportunities across Los Angeles and around the world.

Your attendance at Opening Night helps make this work—and so much more— possible for the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl. We hope you enjoy this special evening, as we embark on our second century of unforgettable nights under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl! Sincerely, Opening Night Gala Co-Chairs

WELCOME TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL!

Chad Smith

Thank you for joining us as we launch the celebration of the Hollywood Bowl’s 100th season. Tonight’s incredible program pays homage to the storied history of the Bowl, with nods to the broad range of artists who have built this LA icon’s legacy. But tonight is also about looking forward: to both the next century of music on this stage and the next generation of music leaders who participate in the LA Phil’s learning programs including YOLA, which this event will help to support. The creation of the Hollywood Bowl and The Ford amphitheaters is indebted to visionary women: Artie Mason Carter and Christine Wetherill Stevenson, respectively. Carter tirelessly fundraised— even selling her diamond ring—to finance the first Bowl stage, which from its humble origins would go on to host the likes of

Igor Stravinsky, Roland Hayes, Jascha Heifetz, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and even The Beatles. Carter envisioned the Bowl as a musical gathering place for all audiences, saying, “People must first learn to sing together, and then they will learn to work together.” That sentiment is still at the heart of our mission at the LA Phil and Hollywood Bowl. The LA Phil is proud of its long partnership with Los Angeles County, and the Bowl is not just our summer home, it is a stage for all of Los Angeles. Thank you again for being here tonight. We hope you enjoy the show. Chad Smith Chief Executive Officer David C. Bohnett CEO Chair Los Angeles Philharmonic Association

FIFTEEN YEARS OF YOLA A decade and a half ago, the first class of 80 students in the LA Phil’s new Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) program gathered in the Expo Center in South LA. Guided by the vision and experience of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel growing up in Venezuela’s El Sistema, YOLA is a youth development and music instruction program that provides free instruments and intensive instruction in communities where it often wouldn’t otherwise be available. Fifteen years in, YOLA now serves more than 1,500 young musicians at five sites, leading Gustavo Dudamel to say, “It has been one of the highlights of my career to watch YOLA grow from a simple idea to something that impacts so many young musicians’ lives.”

BECKMEN YOL A CENTER OPENS IN INGLEWOOD After years of planning, fundraising, and construction, the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center opened its doors last year, welcoming its first class of young musicians. The 25,000-square-foot center features world-class acoustics and spaces that serve both as the home of YOLA’s fifth site as well as a gathering place for students from existing and future YOLA sites. In addition to its youth programming, the Beckmen YOLA Center is a space for music educators from across the U.S. and around the world to collaborate and learn. “We’re really excited to be in Inglewood,” said Camille Delaney-McNeil, who is the Director of the Beckmen YOLA Center. “This is a new area not only for YOLA but also for the LA Phil. We’re not just coming here to pop up shop; we’re building roots and trying to make a resource for the community by highlighting young people in the arts.”

An example of that outward-facing mission came together in May when YOLA partnered with the Getty and CARS (Community Arts Resources) to host the Getty 25 Celebrates Inglewood community festival, during which the Beckmen YOLA Center opened its doors to host performances. Opening for classes last fall, the YOLA at Inglewood program at the Beckmen YOLA Center contains more than 130 young musicians. The center will grow to support more than 500. Dalanie Harris grew up in Inglewood and is a YOLA alumnus who was in the program from 7th grade up until college. Harris said she is excited by the open design of the building that invites passersby to see into the windows. “A big part of it is representation,” she said. “People can see in as they walk by, and [it’s important] for people to not only see an orchestra in their community but an orchestra that looks like the community.”

ahead of Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood was a rare opportunity. Conducted by Thomas Wilkins with music direction and arrangement by Derrick Hodge, musicians from YOLA accompanied gospel duo Mary Mary in a moving performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The performance marked the second Super Bowl appearance by YOLA, the first being the 2016 halftime show performance with Coldplay, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. YOLA musicians performing at SoFi Stadium also got tickets to watch the game. “It really was a moment to celebrate their accomplishments and hard work as young musicians,” said Director Delaney-McNeil.

YOL A AT THE SUPER BOWL Musicians of YOLA are no strangers to big stages, with YOLA musicians joining the LA Phil on international tours. Even still, performing for a TV audience of 100 million in the pre-game festivities

GWEN STEFANI

A three-time Grammy® Award winner, Gwen Stefani has achieved global success as a songwriter, performer, charismatic frontwoman of No Doubt, and multi-platinum solo artist. Throughout it all, Stefani has remained a trend-setting music and fashion icon with an impressive array of honors—four MTV Video Music Awards, two Billboard Awards, an American Music Award, and a BRIT Award. To date, Stefani has sold more than 60 million units worldwide, including her four-time platinum debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., which delivered the hit singles “Rich Girl,” “What You Waiting For?,” and the Pharrell Williams-produced No. 1 hit “Hollaback Girl.” Her sophomore album The Sweet Escape featured the Billboard Hot 100 top-10 single “Wind It Up” and the unforgettable anthem “The Sweet Escape.” Her latest album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. The critically praised album includes her powerful No. 1 single “Used To Love You.” In 2020, Stefani had two No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with husband Blake Shelton: “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.” Stefani also spent five seasons as a coach on the Emmy®-winning NBC series The Voice. One of pop culture’s most magnetic style icons, Stefani is one of the first artists to brilliantly merge music stardom into a series of global lifestyle brands, including her fashion-forward clothing line, L.A.M.B., sister label Harajuku Lovers, and her eyewear line gx by Gwen Stefani. Stefani continues to make giving back a focus in her life. She donated a portion of the ticket sales for her Las Vegas-headlining residency Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl to Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, a Las Vegas-based nonprofit organization that provides medical treatment to children who are facing a number of life-threatening conditions.

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL

Gustavo Dudamel is driven by the belief that music has the power to transform lives, to inspire, and to change the world. Through his dynamic presence on the podium and his tireless advocacy for arts education, Dudamel has introduced classical music to new audiences around the world and has helped to provide access to the arts for countless people in underserved communities. As the Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, now in his 12th season, Dudamel’s bold programming and expansive vision led The New York Times to herald the LA Phil as “the most important orchestra in America—period.” Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dudamel has committed even more time and energy to his mission of bringing music to people across the globe, firm in his conviction that the arts play an essential role in creating a more just, peaceful, and integrated society. A landmark event was the highly anticipated launch of Symphony, a touring virtual reality project in collaboration with “la Caixa” Foundation that features Dudamel and 101 musicians from 22 countries in a stateof-the-art, immersive VR film experience. The free touring exhibition, housed in two mobile pop-up cinemas, launched in Barcelona and will travel to hundreds of towns across Spain and Portugal in order to allow tens of thousands of people to have access to the power of symphonic music. In April 2021, it was announced that Dudamel would join the Paris Opera as its next Music Director, for six seasons beginning in August 2021. Dudamel has led more than 30 staged, semi-staged, and concert productions across the world’s major stages, including five staged productions with Teatro alla Scala, productions at the Berlin and Vienna State Operas, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and 13 operas in Los Angeles, with repertoire ranging from Così fan tutte to Carmen, from Otello to Tannhäuser, from West Side Story to contemporary operas by composers like John Adams and Oliver

1

F

Knussen. As part of his inaugural season as Music Director of the Paris Opera, Dudamel is conducting performances of Puccini’s Turandot and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Following his U.S. debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005, Dudamel became the orchestra’s music director starting with the 2009/10 season, and, under his direction, the LA Phil has secured its place as one of the leading orchestras in the world. Inspired by El Sistema, Dudamel, the LA Phil and its community partners founded YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) in 2007, now providing 1,500 young people with free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic support, and leadership training. In fall 2021, YOLA opened its own permanent, purpose-built facility: The Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry. One of the few classical musicians to become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon, Dudamel conducted Bernstein’s iconic score for Steven Spielberg’s new adaptation of West Side Story. His extensive, multiple-Grammy

Award®-winning discography numbers 57 releases, including Deutsche Grammophon LA Phil recordings of the complete Charles Ives symphonies and Andrew Norman’s Sustain (both of which won the Grammy Award® for Best Orchestral Performance), and, most recently, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand” (winner of the 2022 Grammy for Best Choral Performance). Dudamel’s advocacy for the power of music to unite, heal, and inspire is global in scope. Shaped by his transformative experience as a youth in Venezuela’s immersive musical training program El Sistema, he created the Dudamel Foundation in 2012 with the goal “to expand access to music and the arts by providing tools and opportunities for young people to shape their creative futures.” For more information about Gustavo Dudamel, visit his official website at gustavodudamel.com and the Dudamel Foundation at dudamelfoundation.org. “The rare classical artist to have crossed into pop-culture celebrity.” —The New York Times’ Zachary Woolfe and Laura Cappelle

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, presents an inspiring array of music through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. Both at home and abroad, the LA Phil—recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras—is leading the way in groundbreaking and diverse programming, on stage and in the community, that reflects the orchestra’s artistry and demonstrates its vision. 2021/22 marks the orchestra’s 103rd season. More than 250 concerts are either performed or presented by the LA Phil at its three iconic venues: the Frank Gehrydesigned Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Ford, and the famed Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with approximately 165 performances, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the audience’s experience of orchestral music. Since 1922, its summer home has been the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all genres of music. Situated in a 32-acre park and under the stewardship of the LA Phil since December 2019, The Ford presents an eclectic summer season of music, dance, film, and

family events that are reflective of the communities that comprise Los Angeles. The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond its venues, with wide-ranging performances in the schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its influential and multifaceted learning initiatives is YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music instruction, and leadership training to nearly 1,500 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. In fall 2021, YOLA opened its own permanent, purposebuilt facility: the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry. The orchestra also undertakes tours, both domestically and internationally, including regular visits to New York, London (where the orchestra is the Barbican Centre’s International Orchestral Partner), Paris, and Tokyo. As part of its global Centennial activities, the orchestra visited Seoul, Tokyo, Mexico City, London, Boston, and New York. The LA Phil’s first tour was in 1921, and the orchestra has made

annual tours since the 1969/70 season. The LA Phil has released an array of critically acclaimed audio recordings, including world premieres of the music of John Adams and Louis Andriessen, along with Grammy® Award-winning recordings featuring the music of Johannes Brahms, Charles Ives, Andrew Norman, and Gustav Mahler. Deutsche Grammophon released a comprehensive box set in honor of the orchestra’s Centennial. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a wealthy amateur musician. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, 10 renowned conductors have served in that capacity. Their names are Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodziński (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present). “So far ahead of other American orchestras that it is in competition mainly with its own past achievements.” — The New Yorker’s Alex Ross

New Orleans-born Branford Marsalis is an award-winning saxophonist, band leader, classical soloist, and a film and Broadway composer. In the process, he has become a multi-award-winning artist, with three Grammys and a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three decades-plus of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band’s latest release, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul. But Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford

After a year of community college, he transferred to the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music Percussion Department, studying with Erik Forrester. The following year, Joseph Pereira and Jim Babor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic became his full-time percussion faculty at USC. For his master’s degree in Percussion Performance, he studied with Will Hudgins of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Immediately after graduating in 2015, he was offered a fellowship with the New World Symphony for up to three years.

Featuring over 300 passionate students from nearly every major, the TMB is a prominent representative of the university with over 300 engagements each year. The band has not missed a USC football game, at home or on the road, since 1987. As “Hollywood’s Band,” the TMB has appeared in films including The Naked Gun and Forrest Gump, television series such as Carpool Karaoke and The Tonight Show, and both the Grammys and the Oscars. The band has also performed at the Olympics, Super Bowls, and in 19 countries.

NOVENA CARMEL

Novena Carmel was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, surrounded by her mother’s record collection, classical music books atop her piano, and a deeply rooted musical legacy. Her father, Sly Stone of Sly & The Family Stone, instilled in her the love of the funk and the brilliance of “everyday people.” Her family’s decades-long connection to Brazil, along with her Japanese-bilingual elementary schooling, further expanded Carmel’s worldview. Inspired by the guidance of one of her best friends and mentors, her grandfather, she moved to Los Angeles at 18 to attend UCLA, and graduated with degrees in Mass Communications and African-American Studies. She has been a proud LA resident ever since, with a deep

appreciation for the city’s contributions to the global cultural landscape. For 14 years, Novena worked in entertainment, booking for Temple Bar Concepts, which has owned and operated live music venues and cultural havens throughout the LA area including famed Temple Bar, Zanzibar, The Virgil, and Townhouse & The Del Monte Speakeasy. She has also been a member of multiple music groups, leading to the opportunity to perform at Lollapalooza, Warped Tour, Abbey Road, and Coachella. She launched her DJ career seven years ago, which quickly took off, fueled by her lifelong love of sharing the music she loves with people, and her infectious energy and ability to read a room. As a DJ, she has worked with Natural History Museum, “The Squad,” California African American Museum, the Underground Museum, Soul in The Horn, The Academy Museum, Dublab, Stones Throw Records, Ace Hotel, Amoeba Records, and many others. In

2018, Novena was invited to join the DJ team at KCRW and quickly became popular through her joyous spirit and expansive personalized music collection, and she now co-hosts KCRW’s flagship show Morning Becomes Eclectic along with Anthony Valadez. She is currently not in a band, but enjoys singing with her soul and jazz choir, The Voices of Creation.
