WELCOME

The start of the Bowl season marks the official beginning of summer for generations of music lovers across Los Angeles. This year, we celebrate the LA Phil’s 94th season and Gustavo Dudamel’s sixth as Music Director at the Bowl. The Hollywood Bowl holds special meaning for Dudamel, who made his U.S. debut at the venue ten years ago, at the tender age of 24, and marked his arrival as Music Director with ¡Bienvenido Gustavo!, a historic, daylong community concert. The Bowl has played host to his most beloved initiatives – from YOLA to Americas & Americans – ever since. This summer, Dudamel returns with Orff’s breathtaking Carmina Burana; an all-Mendelssohn program featuring the composer’s beloved Violin Concerto performed by Gil Shaham; and an all-Mozart outing with pianist Alice Sara Ott. Dudamel will also take his first-ever turn at the helm of our annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular – guaranteeing fireworks on and off the stage. We will also be joined by old friends Yuja Wang, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Bramwell Tovey. Following her stunning Bowl debut last season, LA Phil Assistant Conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will return with a program of Bernstein and Bizet. In the weeks that follow, Bernstein’s music will again be in the spotlight with a stunning program showcasing the talents of the American Ballet Theatre and six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald. Joining a roster of classical music’s finest performers are critically acclaimed artists from the worlds of jazz, world music, Broadway, and pop. We are also thrilled to welcome back Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Thomas Wilkins, as well as legendary musician Herbie Hancock in his sixth season as Creative Chair for Jazz. There is a particular brand of alchemy at work at the Hollywood Bowl. Warm summer nights, the natural beauty of the setting, a rich history of musical performance stretching back nearly a century – these qualities combine to make the Bowl a truly magical place. Thank you for joining us this evening; we hope you will enjoy many more music-filled evenings with family and friends at the Hollywood Bowl. Deborah Borda President and Chief Executive Officer Los Angeles Philharmonic Association David C. Bohnett Presidential Chair

12

The wait is over. The Hollywood Bowl Season is upon us. The promise of summer evenings, time with friends, and great music in this remarkable place, is at last fulfilled. This year, the Hollywood Bowl received its 11th consecutive Pollstar award for Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue and also received – for the first time – the Academy of Country Music Venue of the Year award. Never satisfied to rest on our laurels during the off-season, improvements to enhance your experience have continued in full force. Thanks to funding from Proposition A and the County of Los Angeles, renovations in the theater continued with the complete replacement of all of the boxes from the Pool Circle to the Terrace. As the seating area is one of the distinguishing historical elements of the Bowl, great attention is always paid to the architectural history. To that end, along with new aisle flooring and refurbished handrails, the concrete piers marking the seating aisles were rebuilt to their original 1950s form. As an added amenity the box tables and chairs have been replaced with newly designed furnishings for ease and comfort. These changes, along with new benches installed last season, mark the first complete renovation of the Hollywood Bowl seating area in its 94-year history. Behind the scenes, the newly designed and rebuilt Richard D. Colburn Orchestra Lounge creates a more comfortable and spacious environment for our orchestra members and guest artists. We offer our sincere thanks for envisioning and funding the creation of this wonderful space to Los Angeles Philharmonic Board member Carol Colburn Grigor and Dunard Fund USA. As always we extend our deep gratitude to all members of the County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. We recognize our corporate, foundation, and media partners, who provide wide-ranging support throughout the summer to help make possible all of the brilliant performances you see and hear on the Bowl stage. Whether your Hollywood Bowl tradition is generations old, or your tradition starts today, we thank you, our patrons, for joining us. Your passion and devotion make it all worthwhile, and we invite you to experience it again and again. Welcome back, and enjoy the show! WELCOME

A MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISOR SHEILA J. KUEHL This is my first opportunity as your new County Supervisor for the Third District to welcome you to our wonderful Hollywood Bowl and the Summer 2015 concert season, and I am so happy to do so. From the first moment of my election last year, I was privileged to assume the stewardship of the County’s many public facilities in my District. With a proud lineage and rich history stretching back to the early 1920s, the beautiful and iconic Hollywood Bowl is, without question, one of the jewels in our renowned collection of unique and celebrated arts venues. The Bowl we enjoy today includes a state-of-the-art shell that preserves and honors the historic Art Deco styling of its predecessors and adds the most up-to-date acoustic, lighting, and video technology. Whether, like me, you’ve been coming to the Bowl every summer for decades or it’s your first time, what can possibly compare to enjoying music under the California skies on a balmy summer evening? So, add to your storehouse of great Bowl memories by making some new ones tonight. And return for more and more of the rich, varied, and excellent programs here at the Bowl this summer. Thank you so much for your support. I am so proud and happy to join you here and grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent the District that contains your great Hollywood Bowl. Enjoy the program!

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL MUSIC & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL is defined by his untiring advocacy of access to music for all. As a symphonic and operatic conductor, his music making on four continents continues to inspire audiences of all ages. Currently serving as Music Director of both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, the impact of his musical leadership is felt internationally. While his commitment to these posts accounts for the major portion of his yearly schedule, Dudamel also guest conducts with some of the world’s greatest musical institutions. This season he returns to the Berlin Philharmonic, Berlin Staatskapelle, Gothenburg Symphony, Tonhalle Orchestra Zürich, and to the Vienna Philharmonic in Vienna and Salzburg as well as on tour through Europe and Asia. Dudamel made his first foray into composing for film with the major feature The Liberator / Libertador (the life of Simón Bolívar), for which he wrote the score and recorded it with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. The worldwide film release was in October 2014, with the soundtrack release in summer 2014.

18

Gustavo Dudamel is in his sixth season as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where his contract has been newly extended through 2021/22. In recognition of Dudamel’s deepened commitment to the institution, Artistic Director was added to his current title, making him Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Under his leadership the Los Angeles Philharmonic has expanded its diversified outreach through many notable projects, including Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), influenced by Venezuela’s widely successful El Sistema. With YOLA, Gustavo brings music to children in the underserved communities of Los Angeles, and also serves as an inspiration for similar efforts throughout the U.S. and in Europe. Now in his 16th season as Music Director of the entire El Sistema project in Venezuela and ushering this institution into its 40th anniversary season, Dudamel continues to lead the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, in Venezuela as well as on tour.

An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist since 2005, Grammy-winner Gustavo Dudamel has numerous recordings on the label, as well as many video/DVD releases that capture the excitement of significant moments of his musical life. One of the most decorated conductors of his generation, recent distinctions include the 2014 Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society from the Longy School, 2013 Musical America’s Musician of the Year and induction into Gramophone Hall of Fame, 2010 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT, 2009 Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people, 2008 “Q” Prize from Harvard, along with several honorary doctorates. Gustavo Dudamel was born in Venezuela in 1981. Access to music for all has been the cornerstone of Gustavo’s philosophy both professionally and philanthropically.

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC

The LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC, under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, is re-inventing the concept of the 21st-century orchestra. Both at home and abroad, the Philharmonic – recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras – is leading the way in innovative programming, both on stage and in the community, offering a diverse range of presentations that reflect the orchestra’s artistry and demonstrate its vision. 2014/15 marks the orchestra’s 96th season. More than 240 concerts are either performed or presented by the Philharmonic at its two iconic venues, the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, representing a breadth and depth unrivaled by other orchestras or cultural institutions. During its 30-week winter subscription season of more than 170 performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Philharmonic creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the symphonic music experience and delve further into an artist’s or composer’s work. The LA Phil’s commitment to the music of our time is also evident throughout the season programming, as well in the exhilarating Green Umbrella series and the LA Phil’s extensive commissioning initiatives. Praise for both the design and the acoustics of Walt Disney Concert Hall has been effusive, and the building embodies the energy, imagination, and creative spirit of the city of Los Angeles and its orchestra. As Time magazine noted, “With its curvaceous exterior and acoustically adroit interior, Gehry’s building bestowed on the city an important architectural landmark and proved that L.A. residents actually do go to the symphony,” while The Washington Post stated, “At last this orchestra has a hall worthy of its stature.” The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles also extends far beyond symphony concerts in a concert hall, with performances in schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its wide-ranging education initiatives is Youth Orchestra LA

20

(YOLA). Inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 600 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. In 2012, the LA Phil formed an innovative partnership with the Longy School of Music of Bard College. This bi-coastal alliance launched Take a Stand, a national initiative that supports social change through music by providing leaders with tools for growth through a series of conferences and workshops, as well as providing progressive and rigorous training for performing and teaching musicians. Always inspired to expand its cultural offerings, the LA Phil each season produces concerts featuring distinguished artists in recital, jazz, world music, songbook, and visiting orchestra performances, in addition to special holiday concerts and series of chamber music, organ recitals, and Baroque music. The Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to broaden its audience by touring worldwide, offering an extensive catalog of recorded music, and broadcasting concerts on radio and television. Thirteen concerts recorded during the 2014/15 season will also be syndicated nationwide, in partnership with the WFMT Radio Network. The 2014 series was nationally broadcast in 313 markets and reached over 3.8 million listeners. Through an ongoing partnership with Deutsche Grammophon, the orchestra also has a substantial catalog of concerts available online, including the first full-length classical music video released on iTunes. Rhapsody in Blue: Opening Night Concert and Gala was telecast as part of the PBS performing arts series Great Performances and garnered a 2012 Emmy nomination. In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel won a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of the Brahms Symphony No. 4. In 1974, the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta won an Academy Award for “The Bolero,” a 30-minute short subject featuring Maurice Ravel’s famous orchestral work. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a millionaire and amateur musician, who established the city’s first permanent symphony orchestra in 1919. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, ten renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodzinski (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (19781984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

MIDSUMMER MAGIC GUSTAVO DUDAMEL AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL The Hollywood Bowl and his weeks at the populist venue every summer are famously important to Gustavo Dudamel. He made his U.S. debut here ten years ago and the first concert of his tenure as Music Director of the Los Angeles was the monumental ¡Bienvenido Gustavo! blowout in 2009. Now Music and Artistic Director of the orchestra, with a contract extended until 2022,

in all of his music,” Dudamel says. “It is about feelings, about passion, it is about drama, about love, it is about craziness – all of that, you feel.” His program this summer is significant, with the attention all on Dudamel and the LA Phil. It begins with the Fifth Symphony. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth has been compared to Beethoven’s Fifth in its trajectory from tragedy

couldn’t be.” The program is capped by the 1812 Overture, with its now customary dazzling pyrotechnics and the blazing addition of the USC Trojan Marching Band. Earlier in the week, Dudamel conducts his first Carmina Burana in Los Angeles; his first anywhere, in fact, since a long ago performance in Caracas. On Tuesday and Thursday, July 21 and 23, he matches Carl Orff’s thunder-

he returns this summer for more milestones. On July 24 and 25, he conducts the annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular for the first time. One of the Bowl’s most beloved traditions, all-Tchaikovsky programs have long been mainstays of the summer repertory, even before fireworks were added in 1969. Tchaikovsky’s music is dear to Dudamel, something he has demonstrated in several well-received recordings with his other orchestra, the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, as well as in the TCHAIKOVSKYFest he did at Walt Disney Concert in 2014, and other performances. “Tchaikovsky has a lot of soul, and you feel it in this music –

to triumph, and it has served Dudamel well. He has recorded it to wide acclaim (with the Bolívars), and it capped his debut program here in 2005. After intermission come selections from The Nutcracker and Swan Lake; Dudamel’s astonishing complete Nutcracker was one of the 2013 highlights of the annual Deck the Hall holiday concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall. “Nor is it any surprise that Dudamel makes The Nutcracker irresistible,” Mark Swed wrote in his Los Angeles Times review. “He recognizes everything interesting in it. He overcomes pretty much all of the ballet’s problems that can be overcome, including a few that I thought

ing lusty score with two works by American choral master Eric Whitacre, a YouTube celebrity whose luminous works have become something of a specialty for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, which joins the LA Phil for these concerts, along with the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. The soloists are soprano Joélle Harvey, tenor Lawrence Brownlee, and baritone Brian Mulligan. The following week come two more magical programs, one devoted to Mendelssohn (Tuesday, July 28), the other to Mozart (Thursday, July 30). American virtuoso Gil Shaham, a longtime friend of the LA Phil, returns to play Mendelssohn’s ever-enchanting E-minor Violin

Concerto. Enchantment is also the theme of the second half of the Tuesday program, which features Mendelssohn’s complete incidental music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performance, which includes a narrator, the women of the MasterChorale, and two solo singers, is directed by Dudamel’s good friend Alberto Arvelo (director of several previous works with Dudamel and the LA Phil, as well as the film Libertador, which Dudamel scored), who has also created ambient background projections that will transform the shell of the Bowl. Mendelssohn’s shimmering Overture and joyous Wedding March are no strangers to Bowl programming, of course, but theatrical performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream also have a history here. Max Reinhardt staged a famously lavish production of the play – utilizing Mendelssohn’s music, with additions by Korngold – in 1934, with an all-star Hollywood cast that included Olivia de Havilland as Hermia and Mickey Rooney as Puck; they reprised those roles in Reinhardt’s film production for Warner Bros. the following year. More recently, John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra joined Pacific Northwest Ballet for George Balachine’s dance version of the play in 2002 and Esa-Pekka Salonen led the LA Phil in Mendelssohn’s score for a staged production at the Bowl by A Noise Within in 2004. Dudamel’s concerts this summer conclude with a delightful survey of some of Mozart’s greatest hits. German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott makes her Hollywood Bowl and Los Angeles Philharmonic debuts in the Piano Concerto No. 21, K. 467. One of Mozart’s masterpieces of the genre that he owned in the 1780s, the Concerto was – for one generation, at least – linked to 1967’s dreamy film Elvira Madigan, which found a central place for the Concerto’s sublime Andante. Dudamel opens the concert with the tuneful effervescence of Eine kleine Nachtmusik, illuminates some of Mozart’s vocal glories with a pair of singers, and closes with the irresistible sparkle of the German Dance known as “Sleighride” for its merry bells.

LA PHIL 2015/16 SEASON ANNOUNCED

In February Los Angeles Philharmonic Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and President and CEO Deborah Borda announced the orchestra’s 2015/16 season. Under the leadership of Dudamel, the orchestra’s 97th season weaves together myriad genres and artistic disciplines, offering audiences unique pairings of foundational works and adventurous explorations. Through innovative artistic vision and exemplary musicianship, the Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to occupy its place as one of the leading orchestras in the world. Subscriptions are still available, and Create Your Own packages (five or more concerts chosen from the full range of series and nonsubscription programs) go on sale July 14; single tickets go on sale Sunday, August 23. “The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2015/16 season is an expression of Music Director Gustavo Dudamel’s vision for the LA Phil as a diverse, modern, and collaborative leader willing to test disciplinary boundaries in the service of great orchestral music – it is quintessential LA Phil,” said Borda. “Dudamel

32

has always said that the LA Phil is invested in a tradition of the new, and 2015/16 embraces that sentiment with 12 commissions and world premieres; inspired pairings, from Mozart and Pärt to Ravel and Ars Electronica Futurelab; and our always deepening relationship with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. Dudamel’s sense of adventure, vibrant spirit, and profound commitment to education will once again resound throughout Walt Disney Concert Hall and beyond, touching the lives of our audiences here in Los Angeles and around the world.” “This season exemplifies true collaboration through the LA Phil’s commitment to contemporary work and to upholding tradition and creativity,” said Dudamel. “We will be performing repertoire I love from Mozart and Beethoven, as well as bringing life to new works by Andrew Norman, Arvo Pärt, and Louis Andriessen. Reuniting my two musical families, the LA Phil and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, in the Immortal Beethoven festival will be a complete joy. I am incredibly proud of the work we have

accomplished and will continue to accomplish together on stage and for the children of El Sistema and YOLA.” Season highlights include: Immortal Beethoven – Dudamel leads two complete sequential cycles of Beethoven’s nine symphonies shared between the LA Phil and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. This festival of complete Beethoven immersion further explores the legendary composer’s works through chamber music, plus educational initiatives including YOLA, Toyota Symphonies for Youth, and Take a Stand activities. City of Light – Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen spearheads a festival of 20th- and 21st-century French masterworks, including a multi-disciplinary installation for Ravel’s Mother Goose by the visionary Austrian collective Ars Electronica Futurelab and a semi-staged production of Debussy’s masterpiece Pelléas et Mélisande. Mozart & Pärt – Two of Dudamel’s beloved composers are juxtaposed in programs showcasing music from across the centuries.

FROM THE LA PHIL

Dudamel’s Contract Extended In March Los Angeles Philharmonic Association Board Chair Diane B. Paul and President/Chief Executive Officer Deborah Borda announced a contract extension for Gustavo Dudamel through the 2021/22 season. In recognition of Dudamel’s deepened commitment to the institution, Artistic Director was added to his current title, making him Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His original contract as Music Director commenced in the 2009/10 season for a five-year term and was extended in March 2011 to run through 2018/19. The March announcement was made from Tokyo during the orchestra’s first tour of Asia under Dudamel. Diane Paul commented, “In Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has a great treasure. In addition to his dynamic artistic leadership, he continues to expand YOLA, one of the great hallmarks of his tenure, modeled on the inspirational work of José Antonio Abreu. On behalf of the Board, it gives me enormous joy to know that we will continue to share the treasure we have in Gustavo with Los Angeles and beyond for at least the next seven years.” Deborah Borda added, “Gustavo’s passionate leadership has instilled a new sense of possibility among our musicians, our audiences, and our community. His all-embracing vision propels us forward to the LA Phil’s centenary celebration and beyond, and exemplifies the institution’s commitment to innovation and access for all.” Chairman of the Orchestra Committee Barry Gold stated, “We are absolutely thrilled that he will be our Music & Artistic Director through the 2021/22 season. The immediate camaraderie and respect from the beginning between Gustavo and the musicians has continued to grow over our years together, resulting in incredible music making. This is great news for all of us at the LA Phil.” Dudamel observed, “It has been ten years now since my debut in Los Angeles with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and my love for both orchestra and city has grown in depth and in intensity over this decade. We have an unparalleled situation in the world of classical music today: great musicians, a strong community base, a healthy organization with amazing administrative leadership, a hugely supportive board, innovative and game-changing educational programs, two iconic venues, and a growing shared history of musical performances. Conducting in the City of Angels is a magical experience, and I owe so much to so many Angels and Angelenos. As I look to the future and how I want to focus my work, it’s become clear that it is about a deepening of commitments to my two musical families – my beloved El Sistema, and this great orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic.”

John Williams Gala Released on DVD and Televised on PBS The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2014 Opening Night & Gala at Walt Disney Concert Hall was “A Celebration of John Williams.” Conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, it featured legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman, a jazz trio of Dan Higgins, Glenn Paulson, and Michael Valerio, the U.S. Army

Herald Trumpets, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, and projections designed by Netia Jones. That performance was recorded and is scheduled for release on DVD and Blu-ray by C Major Entertainment on June 30. After noting in his Los Angeles Times review the LA Phil’s long relationship with Williams, Mark Swed wrote: “Even so, Dudamel brings something new to the relationship. He is an unabashed Williams enthusiast who grew up, like all kids of his generation, on Star Wars films. When writing his film score for The Liberator, the Venezuelan Simón Bolívar biopic that opens this week, Dudamel turned to Williams for advice. “The evening’s program ended with music from Star Wars and included excerpts from Schindler’s List, played by violinist Itzhak Perlman, who performs on the soundtrack. But it also included other sides of Williams. “Most important was Dudamel’s revival of Soundings, the piece Williams wrote for one of the three opening programs of [Walt] Disney [Concert Hall] in 2003. It is a kind of soundtrack for a concert hall, telling the story of a venue’s awakening, glistening, responding, and rejoicing. A flute plays a motive, an unseen flute offstage responds. Sterling brass, glittering percussion, shimmering strings bounce melodic sparks off the walls. The space, as if it were a character in a coming-of-age film, comes alive. “On this occasion, the Hall had help it probably didn’t need from the British video artist Netia Jones. Still, her animated Disney images were lively and fanciful.”

“I can hear you when you sigh/Through the water in the sky.” To the crowd’s delight, Trey Anastasio sang those words on a Friday evening at the Hollywood Bowl last fall. For those who live in and love California, now in the grip of an historic drought, we have long wished that the sky would deliver enough water to ease the shortage we’ve all been coping with for several years. At the Department of Parks and Recreation, we partner with all Californians in our shared obligation to conserve this precious resource. We are proud to say that the Bowl is taking a leadership role in water conservation. Do you like the look of the landscaping on these beautiful grounds? Many of you may not know that the Bowl is one of 29 L.A. County parks watered by “smart controllers.” This technology collects real-time weather data, beamed down by orbiting satellites to a computer-based interface, and irrigates plants according to their specific moisture needs at an appointed time. Countywide, these controllers have saved 219 million gallons of water at our parks – enough water to provide 1,200 families with a year’s supply of water. It has now been eight years since we installed waterless urinals and low-flush toilets in the restrooms here at the Bowl, saving 3.5 million gallons of water – in the first year alone! While entering the Bowl tonight, you probably walked or drove past a great example of water conservation that is meant to go mostly unnoticed. Last November, we quietly replaced the grass that had long circled the Bowl marquee – otherwise known as our “front door” – and replaced it with a form of artificial turf that requires no water for maintenance. Whether the efforts are large or small, we must all pull together to help ensure that we confront this drought in a fashion that is environmentally responsible, and takes into account the quality-of-life need to do all we can to preserve and protect the outdoor beauty that is a hallmark of the Golden State. Until we meet again, I leave you with a few more words from the song that opened this note, which seem especially apropos as you prepare to hear some great music this evening: “Listen as she speaks to you/Hear the voices flutter through…”

LA Phil President Deborah Borda In Residence at Harvard Kennedy School In March the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School announced that Los Angeles Philharmonic President and Chief Executive Officer Deborah Borda will join its community as a Hauser Leader-in-Residence. Borda will be the first arts executive to hold the post. Her appointment begins in September, at which time she will take a four-month sabbatical from the Philharmonic. Borda is widely regarded as one of the most successful arts executives in the United States, and is known for her innovative approach to shaping the role of orchestras in the 21st century. She has led the LA Phil, which maintains the largest operating budget of any American orchestra, into an era of robust artistic and financial health. In partnership with the LA Phil’s lauded Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, Borda has developed a portfolio of influential artistic and educational programs, including such high-profile initiatives as the in/SIGHT series, the El Sistemainspired Youth Orchestra LA, and the most active commissioning program in the country. Her ambitious vision for the LA Phil, combined with her business acumen, has earned the organization an unrivaled reputation for artistic excellence and creativity worldwide. “This invitation comes at an opportune time for me, as I pause to reflect on the exciting adventure of the past 15 years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic,” said Borda. “It is a privilege to be asked to develop leaders of the future and to further explore the role of the arts in society and cultural entrepreneurism. I look forward to returning refreshed and filled with new ideas as we prepare for the celebration of the LA Phil’s upcoming centennial.”

Now that they have finally put winter squarely in the rearview mirror and taken to their outdoor barbecues, serious grillmeisters understand that putting the ideal char on the steaks and corn is not the only task at hand. There are thirsts to slake; I enjoy a good dry rosé when flipping the burgers. Dining outdoors does not mean dumbing down the wine experience, and there are a few easy steps anyone can take to enhance it. Do not fear the screwcap. Once thought to be the sign of an inferior wine, the screwcap turns out to be superior for many wines, especially crisp white wines. Many top producers have gone to the screwcap, even for their very finest wines. The list includes SonomaCutrer, Bonny Doon, Domaine Laroche, Baileyana, and most top-notch wineries in Australia and New Zealand. The screwcap is ideal for picnics because you never have to worry about forgetting the corkscrew! Don’t be afraid to chill the reds. Red wines served warm tend to be dull and lifeless, and sometimes harsh. Ten to 15 minutes on ice will freshen your reds and make them go down easier. Besides, on a warm day, something cold always refreshes more than something lukewarm. Avoid plastic stemware. Sipping wine from plastic often leaves a metallic taste on the palate. Glass is always better, unless the rules of the picnic area forbid it. If you are worried about breakage, use a sturdy water tumbler for the wine. You’re less likely to have breakage, and the tasting experience will be significantly improved.

world’s best pinot blanc – from Alsace and northeastern Italy – is anything but Burgundian. An under-performer domestically, pinot blanc in the right hands can be spectacular. Dutton Goldfield’s expression is that rare flash of brilliance for this grape on our shores. It exhibits Alsatian richness on the palate, with mouthcoating generosity and mouth-watering acidity; it’s floral and spicy with citrus aromas, and remarkably complex and rewarding. Surely this is one of the finest pinot blancs, if not the finest, in America. Rating: 96. Roth 2013 Sauvignon Blanc (Alexander Valley, $15): This warm-climate sauvignon is on the delicate side, with subtle melon and tropical fruit aromas that make it a perfect white for spicy Asian cuisine or summer tapas. Discoveries 2014 Pinot Grigio (California, $12): The Discoveries pinot grigio offers more richness and body than you might expect, but that’s because it’s blended with a healthy jolt (12 percent) of chardonnay. The end may very well justify the means: The result is a clean, crisp, refreshing summer white that shows attractive apple, melon, and lime aromas – at a very nice price. ABOUT THE

ARTISTS

As overnight successes go, 15 years is a hell of a long time to wait. While a fortuitous 1979 meeting in a student house in Cardiff would set Rick Smith and Karl Hyde on a collective career path for the next 35 years (and counting), it would be a decade and a half before they were heralded as the most important new band in Britain, with a “debut” album so groundbreaking, its ripple effects are still apparent now. In the years after meeting, bands came and went – the Screen Gemz, Freur, Underworld (Mk 1). A relocation to Essex, a curious ear to the country’s nascent club scene, and a meeting (engineered by Rick’s brother-in-law) with 19-year-old DJ Darren Emerson helped inspire total creative rebirth. Each would bring a unique contrasting vision to UNDERWORLD. Rick would explore the infinite possibilities of studio as instrument, and Darren would help inspire left turns in the creative process while Karl would trawl late night city streets documenting fragments of conversation that would eventually provide elliptical lyrics. A series of jaw-dropping singles by the trio followed. Tentative steps were taken under the guise of Lemon Interupt (Big Mouth, Dirty) before three releases under the reclaimed Underworld moniker (Mmm… Skyscraper I Love You, Rez, Spikee) paved the way for the band’s first album, released at the start of 1994 to unanimous praise. A glorious, mesmeric tumble of information, dubnobasswithmyheadman occupied a truly inimitable musical space – one where discombobulated phrases looped hypnotically and rolling lyrical travelogues stretched themselves out over an entirely new sonic architecture; a place where the narcotic haze of Studio One fused to the Europe Endless techno underground. In the 20 years since the release of dubnobasswithmyheadman, Underworld’s

P2

DNA has spread through both electronic music and popular culture in general – mutated and reimagined as the EDM soundtrack of the dancefloors of Las Vegas; acknowledged and acclaimed as the backbone to Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein at the National Theatre and his globally acclaimed Opening Ceremony to the London 2012 Olympic Games (where Smith and Hyde – back to a core duo after the departure of Emerson in 2000 – acted as musical directors to an inspired, hallucinogenic sprint through 300 years of British history). Their albums – from the gleaming futurism of Second Toughest In The Infants (1996) to Barking’s gleeful exploration of modern dancefloor sonics (2010) – effortlessly filtered modernist sounds into their own ever-expanding vision. On stage, they established and cemented a reputation as one of the most forward thinking, freeform electronic acts in the world; their gigs – whether in clubs, gig venues, or on festival stages – created a communal euphoria unparalleled in live ‘dance’ music. In the fall of 2014, Smith and Hyde re-released a deluxe version of dubnobasswithmyheadman and played a one-off performance of the record at the Royal Festival Hall. Demand for tickets saw the Festival Hall’s phone system melt down; in real terms, the gig sold out in the first ten seconds it was on sale. Proof then that 35 years after forming a band and 20 years after being heralded as the best new thing in town, it’s still possible to be an overnight success.

It’s the hottest day of the year. Slender bodies swaying in the heat haze. You’re on a beach, but it’s more than a beach – the colors are brighter, the sunlight warmer, the cool sea a more psychedelic shade of turquoise. And somewhere nearby there’s a band playing… This is where JUNGLE wants to take you. An infinite holiday, a place called bliss, a great escape from the grey and the everyday – because, as aesthetes from Oscar Wilde to Pharrell Williams knew, there is nothing so serious as fun and nothing as subversive as happiness. And behind the rising buzz – the BBC Sound of 2014 nomination, the four-million-plus plays of the “Platoon” video, the U.S. tour that sold out on the back of their SXSW appearance before Jungle even had an official record out

in America – it’s a DIY story. Working from their home studio in Shepherd’s Bush, the core Jungle duo known only as J and T set out their store long before they came on any label’s radar with a brace of handmade mini-classics. A couple of singles – “The Heat”’s supple 4am soul snap, the ice-cold search-and-destroy beats of “Platoon” – connected 2014 and 1974, London with Rio and New York, the feet with the unconscious mind. Now perhaps some explanation is in order. We can reveal that J and T are a pair of sound obsessives called Josh and Tom, sharp and meticulous West Londoners who each play “pretty much everything” and tend to finish each other’s sentences too. A brief spell in a mate’s band confirmed that the worn-out strictures of indie rock weren’t for them. Specifically it made them realize that if you’re going to make music at all, it’d better be your own – something that you can pour your heart and soul into, something that you can up stand for, something you’re proud of. “Jungle brought us closer together,” says J. “It made us realize why we’re best friends, and why we wanted to make music that’s fun and honest and true to itself.” So they threw themselves into finding a sound that only they could make. Something epic and rhythmic, euphoric, and sexual. “It’s always been visual for us,” explains the enthusiastic J. “We want the feel of a video game or a cartoon landscape, a hyperreal, colorful, surreal place. We want everything to be realer than real.” Half recorded at home and finished in the studios of their new label XL, where The xx made their own first album, Jungle’s intoxicating self-titled debut delivers all that and more. There’s technique and care in these seemingly weightless tracks but above all it feels effortless, a breath of fragrant fresh air, a touch of psychedelic sweetness for sour times.

ABOUT THE

ARTISTS

Blending soulful vocals with organic folk introspection and irresistible hip-hop hooks, ED SHEERAN is a genuine global phenomenon. The 24-year-old artist’s acclaimed second fulllength album x (pronounced “multiply”) went to No. 1 on the album charts in 14 countries around the world, and has since achieved platinum sales in 18 countries including the United States and his native United Kingdom, where it was the biggest selling album of 2014. With worldwide sales exceeding seven million, x is highlighted by a trio of smash singles – “Sing,” “Don’t,” and his biggest hit to date – “Thinking Out Loud,” which marks Sheeran’s first No. 1 single in the U.S. In February, Sheeran received one of the biggest ovations of the night for his performance of “Thinking Out Loud” at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, where he was nominated for three awards, including Album of the Year for x. Later that month, he took home the awards for Best British Album and Best British Male at the 2015 BRIT Awards. Most recently, Sheeran took home the coveted Songwriter of the Year trophy at the 2015 Ivor Novello Awards. An acclaimed live performer, Sheeran has played countless sold-out shows across the globe, including a three-night stand at New York City’s Madison Square Garden and four nights at London’s O2 Arena. This summer will see him perform his biggest headlining shows to date, including his just-announced, first NFL stadium show at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, and three sold-out nights at London’s Wembley Stadium.

P4

Along with his six Grammy nominations and four BRIT Awards, Sheeran has accrued an array of distinguished honors, including the 2012 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for “The A Team,” as well as trophies for Best Male Video at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards and Favorite Album and Favorite Artist at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards. Sheeran was also a five-time finalist at this year’s Billboard Music Awards in May. As if all of that weren’t enough, Sheeran was also named Spotify’s most streamed artist in the world in 2014. Sheeran’s 2012 breakthrough debut album, +, entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1 with the highest opening sales figures for a debut male solo artist ever and is now certified 6x-platinum. Fueled by international hit singles like “The A Team” and “Lego House,” + has enjoyed multi-platinum, platinum, and gold sales in nine countries around the world.

The first full-length album from RIXTON – the Manchester, England-based foursome whose debut single “Me and My Broken Heart” went platinum in the U.S. and hit No. 1 on the UK Singles chart in 2014 – Let the Road takes its title from a soulful, harmony-powered a cappella song that the band wrote in its earliest days. “We came up with ‘Let the Road’ years ago in a caravan in Danny’s back garden, when we were trying to make something happen with our music and nothing was working out,” says vocalist/rhythm guitarist Jake Roche, who formed Rixton with Charley Bagnall (vocals, lead guitar), Danny Wilkin (vocals, bass, keys), and Lewi Morgan (vocals, drums) in 2012. “It’s perfect to have that be the title track and the first song on this album,” Jake continues, “because it shows that you really never know where you’re going in life.” Produced by Benny Blanco (Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Rihanna, OneRepublic) and released via School Boy/Giant Little Man/Mad Love/Interscope Records, Let the Road serves as a prime showcase for the melody-fueled fusion of pop, rock, and R&B that’s propelled Rixton out of that backyard caravan and into the international spotlight. Along with “Me and My Broken Heart” and “Wait On Me” (Rixton’s second single, a reggae-tinged summer smash that landed on Billboard’s Mainstream Top 40 chart soon after

its July 2014 release), the album features both new material and songs revamped from dozens of demos the band’s assembled over the years. Those newer tracks include their haunting third single “Hotel Ceiling,” penned by Ed Sheeran to reveal a darker, moodier, more intense side of Rixton. Further proof of the group’s magnetic versatility, Rixton weave their breathtaking four-part harmonies and high-energy, liveinstrument-based brand of pop into tracks as diverse as the stripped-back party song “I Like Girls,” the aching piano ballad “Whole,” and the breezy but bittersweet breakup number “Beautiful Excuses.” The brother-like kinship that carried Rixton through Let the Road’s recording first began to form more than a half-decade ago, when Jake dropped out of school at 16 to dedicate his life to music and quickly joined forces with Danny (who’d recently quit college for the same reason). After three years of collaborating on songwriting and playing covers in pubs around Manchester, the duo crossed paths with Charley and recruited him as their lead guitarist. With Charley’s years of experience in pop-punk group Rio instilling an edgier vibe into their pop/R&B-influenced sound, the trio spent a year writing together before rounding out their lineup with the addition of Lewi (who’d devoted the past seven years to sharpening his drum skills by playing in a series of rock bands). With their live experience now including a summer 2014 headlining tour – as well as a June 2014 performance at London’s famed Wembley Stadium – Rixton are getting ready to head out as a supporting act for Ed Sheeran on his North American tour. “It’s a huge honor to open for Ed,” says Jake. “We’ve been big fans since day one, and we’ve become fairly close with him since ‘Hotel Ceiling’ came about. We can’t wait to hit the road and watch him perform every night.”

ABOUT THE

PROGRAM

The Sound of Music For what ended up being their last collaboration, the legendary team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II turned to Maria von Trapp’s account of her family’s odyssey in late-1930s Austria, The Trapp Family Singers. In 1924, Maria had entered the convent of Nonnenburg Abbey in the Austrian town of Salzburg (famous as Mozart’s birthplace and for its annual music festival). Two years later, she was dispatched to the household of Baron Georg von Trapp to care for his invalid daughter. In 1927, the baron and the former postulant married. The Trapp family made their debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1936, but left Austria in 1938 after the Nazis occupied the country and annexed it. After traveling through Europe, the family emigrated to the United States, and Maria, Georg, and their 10 children settled in Vermont in 1942. Georg died in 1947, and Maria published her family memoir two years later. Robert Wise’s 1965 film wasn’t the first version of the Trapp family’s story to hit the silver screen. In 1956, a German-language version of the story, Die Trapp Familie, was released in Europe and met modest success both there and in South America. Paramount took note, and decided to option the story with an English-language film starring Audrey Hepburn in mind. Paramount never made the planned picture; Hepburn kept herself busy with War and Peace, Funny Face, and Love in the Afternoon. The German film had, however, come to the attention of Broadway star Mary Martin, famous for creating the role of Nellie Forbush in another Rodgers and Hammerstein production, South Pacific (1949). Martin was enchanted by the film, and she and her husband tried to track down Maria von Trapp to discuss the possibility of turning her family’s story into a musical. Maria had been on a mission to, ironically enough, the south

P6

Notes by John Mangum

Pacific, and could not be found. After eight months of searching, Martin found her in Innsbruck, Austria, recovering from malaria. Though wary of allowing her life to be made into a Broadway play, Maria recognized how much money her participation could generate – money that she could use in her religious and charitable work.

A book was generated from Maria’s 1949 account and given to Martin. At this point, the idea was to use actual German songs sung by the Trapp family for the musical portions of the play. The producer also hoped that Rodgers and Hammerstein would contribute several songs as well. But the composer and lyricist thought that the work would be stronger if it were consistent. They would only participate if all of the songs were original. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway on November 16, 1959 with Mary

Martin as Maria. It ran for 1,443 performances, an overwhelming critical and popular success. For the movie version of the musical, the roles of the baroness (played by Eleanor Parker in the film) and Max (played by Richard Haydn) were reduced, and three songs – “No Way to Stop It,” “An Ordinary Couple,” and “How Can Love Survive” – were cut. Richard Rodgers composed two new songs for the filmed version of his musical. Maria and the baron’s “Something Good” replaced “An Ordinary Couple,” and Maria’s “I Have Confidence” was added to the film’s opening scene in Nonnenburg Abbey. The Sound of Music boasts some of the most famous numbers in musical history. Rodgers showed the breadth and versatility of his art with this score. The music ranges from the religious solemnity of the Psalm, Hymn, and Alleluia sung by the nuns’ chorus to the delights of numbers like “DoRe-Mi” and “My Favorite Things.” The abbess’ “Climb Every Mountain” never fails to rouse, and there are few tunes more moving than the baron’s “Edelweiss.” The work is, of all of the Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborations, the closest to Viennese operetta with its succession of numbers covering a wide emotional and musical range, an appropriate similarity considering its setting, if not its subject.

ABOUT THE

ARTISTS

BASEMENT JAXX are on top of the world. It’s a view these inveterate musical explorers have long embraced, ever since minting at the turn of the millennium the currently voguish, airwave-dominating pop-house sound. As they prepare to release Junto, their earthshaking, hip-shaking new album, that view is taking on added meaning. From Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton’s new studio in north London in a business-y space that’s now the biggest music hub in the city, they can see the transformation of Kings Cross down below. They can hear it too: the clank and whirr of hard-hatted workers toiling to transform these acres of onetime railway yards into a new travel hub, new town-within-a-city, new gateway to Europe. Right now there’s

out on their own after the completion of their decade-plus contract with XL. Now they’re working with Coop/PIAS to release via their own long-running imprint Atlantic Jaxx. So it’s the sound of freedom (not that XL kept them chained in a cellar and made them churn out sweatshop sing-alongs). And it’s the sound of ambition (not that the Glastonbury-headlining, triple platinum album-selling, Brit- and Grammy-winning maestros of global dancetronica have ever lacked ambition) and of Simon and Felix diving back into sunshine and the spotlight (not that they’ve been wintering in idleness and obscurity – they’ve written two film scores, produced an orchestral album, and last year they released two singles. They’re not on the new

no place they’d rather be and unlike their last studio near Brixton, this one has windows. Let there be light and tunes that hark back to the jump-around, era-defining likes of “Where’s Your Head At,” “Red Alert,” and “Romeo.” Junto is the duo’s seventh studio album. Two years in the making, it’s the first since they set

album. Basement Jaxx, blessed with collaborators and ideas, had too many other crackers competing for slots on the tracklisting). The spirit of the album is there in the title. Junto means together in Spanish. It’s definitely not to be confused with the name for a despotic Latin American regime. And Simon and

Felix wear their heart on their record sleeve: the cover of Junto features a new logo based on “clouds and nature and sacred geometry,” which was created by the winner of a design competition the duo ran a couple of years ago. “With this album we wanted to do something that felt more at one with the world,” says Felix. “…which is partly to do with my awakening after I saw a UFO from the studio.” But let’s not go there. Not today at least. (“He talks about the UFO every day!” exclaims Simon, half-skeptical, half-believing “He’s evangelical about it!”) Let’s talk instead about the album’s most hardcore dance song, the heavy, grinding, throbbing “Buffalo.” “In the car I was listening to some jungle on a pirate station,” says Felix by way of explaining the track’s genesis, “…and I was thinking, ‘wow, this sound really fresh again…’.” “And we were partly inspired by ‘Harlem Shake’,” adds Simon. The pair are as much the enthusiastic students of dance music’s everevolving shapes and genres as they ever were. “So we thought it would be a good idea to do a drum and bass trap song.” Vocals are by transgender rapper Mykki Blanco. Well, some of them are. “He’s pretty out there,” nods Felix, and this is truer than they initially imagined. Blanco vanished before they could finish the track with him – he’s currently they think really out there in the desert. It all adds to the cheerfully inventive, explosively enjoyable vibe of an album written and finessed over the last couple of years. As they’ve always been, Basement Jaxx are both diligent and instinctive, forever alert to the creative possibilities offered by new talent. Forget this-or-that Big Name Guest Star – what can a fresh voice bring to the party? So Junto features walk-on vocals from singers they met in the car park of their studio (Niara, big-lunged singer of “Power to the People”), on the street at the Edinburgh Festival (Scottish rapper Patricia Panther, who’s on the sexually gobby “Summer Dem”), and from amid the ranks of their carny-style “Jaxx family” touring party (Shakka, who toplines the World Cup samba-party vibes of “Rock This Road”). And that’s about, oh, half the tracks and only a fraction of the guests and players and ideas on this bold, boisterous, brilliant album. Summer is almost here, and the Jaxx are back. Let’s get this party started. Let’s get Junto.

WILLIAM EARL “BOOTSY” COLLINS was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 26, 1951. His big career break came at age 15 at King

and Funkadelic. “Give Up the Funk”, and the No. 1 Billboard R&B singles “Flashlight” and “One Nation Under Groove” were a few of their many hit songs. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 as a member of Parliament Funkadelic, and he won a Grammy for Best Music Video in 2002 for “Weapon of Choice.” Two gold award certifications from the RIAA have been awarded to Bootsy Collins as a solo artist. His single “Bootzilla” hit No. 1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. He performed vocals on “Groove Is in the Heart,” the gold single by Deee-Lite. Beyonce sampled Bootsy’s hit single “I’d Rather Be With You” on her 2004 song, “Be With You.” In 2011 Bootsy released Tha Funk Capital of the World, which made the Billboard R&B albums chart. Companies that have contracted Bootsy include the NFL, Nike, and Warner Brothers. VH1 had Bootsy perform in 2012 on the show “Divas” and in 2013 he was featured in their documentary, Finding the Funk. His music has appeared in numerous films, including Friday and Moneyball. HBO had Bootsy appear in their 2014 James Brown documentary, Mr. Dynamite.

TUXEDO is Grammy-nominated Renaissance man Mayer Hawthorne (Aquarius) and Grammy-nominated producer Jake One (Taurus). They are descendants of the one-word moniker family of funk, where you will find groups such as Chic, Shalamar, Plush, and Zapp. The Tuxedo collaboration began with an exchange of boogie-funk mixtapes back in 2006. “They had a lot of the same songs on them.” said Jake. “I couldn’t believe there was another person in the world that cared about this style of music.” The fruits of a long-standing kinship were three tracks that mysteriously showed up on internet doorsteps nearly two years ago. In between Mayer’s solo albums, and Jake’s productions for Drake, fun., J. Cole, etc., these three tracks became a full album’s worth of Tuxedo. The album was mixed by original disco don dada John Morales at his home studio in South Plainfield, New Jersey. “I flew out there,” Mayer says. “John made me spaghetti and everything.” On March 3, 2015 the duo released Tuxedo on Stones Throw Records, which also marks Mayer’s return to the label since his debut release of A Strange Arrangement in 2009.

Records, when he played bass in James Brown recording sessions. Bootsy and his brother, Phelps “Catfish” Collins subsequently toured worldwide with James Brown as part of his band, The JB’s. Bootsy’s bass playing was featured on hit records by James Brown, such as “Get Up (I feel like being a) Sex Machine.” Bootsy joined the bands Parliament and Funkadelic after working with James Brown. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded nine gold records and three platinum records to Parliament

ABOUT THE

PROGRAM

Great Scott! After 30 years we find ourselves being sent Back to the Future. This time the re-entry is in the concert hall, bringing a new sense of excitement through gifted musicians all around the world. Unlike Doc Brown, I could never have dreamed that I would have the opportunity to set the time circuits back to 1985 and have the chance to relive the excitement of the arrival of Back to the Future. “Where we’re going, we don’t need roads…” With a timeless film, and a timeless machine known as an orchestra, we can go anywhere. — Alan Silvestri

In his ongoing, decades-long career as a composer, ALAN SILVESTRI has scored some of the most iconically revered and profitable films in Hollywood history, amassing over a hundred credits to the tune of two Oscar and Golden Globe nominations, two Emmy awards, as well as three Grammys. While stylistically diverse, the unifying voice of Alan’s work is an unmistakable rhythmic melody whose themes continue to embody movie excitement and drama for generations of moviegoers. Born in New York City and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey, Silvestri first thought of becoming a bebop jazz guitar player. After spending two years at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Silvestri hit the road as a performer and arranger. Landing in Hollywood at the age of 22 and armed with film scoring books and a sense of adventure, Silvestri found himself successfully composing the music for 1972’s The Doberman Gang. A sequel, The Amazing Dobermans, was followed by several low budget but successful films further cementing Silvestri’s place in the world of film composing. The 1970s witnessed the rise of energetic synth-pop scores, establishing Silvestri as the action rhythmatist for TV’s highway patrol hit CHiPs. This-action driven score caught the ear of budding filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, whose 1984 hit film Romancing the Stone was the perfect first date for the composer and director; its success became the basis of a decades-long collaboration that continues to the current day. Their numerous collaborations have taken them through many fascinating landscapes and stylistic variations, from the Back to the Future trilogy and the jazzy world of Toontown in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to the tension-filled P12

rooms of What Lies Beneath and Death Becomes Her, from the cosmic wonder of Contact to the emotional isolation of Castaway, and from the Wagnerian brawl of Beowulf to the magic of The Christmas Carol and Polar Express, whose song “Believe” garnered an Oscar nomination. But perhaps no film partnership defines their creative relationship better than Zemeckis’ 1994 Best Picture winner, Forrest Gump, for which Silvestri’s gift for melodically beautiful themes earned him an Oscar nomination and the affection of film music lovers everywhere. Though the Zemeckis / Silvestri collaboration is legendary, Silvestri has scored well over 100 films of every imaginable style and genre. His energy and experimentation has brought excitement and emotion to the hard-hitting orchestral/percussion scores of Predator, Judge Dredd, and James Cameron’s The Abyss, and lent thrills to the effects-driven scores for The Mummy Returns and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. His ethnic rhythms for Soapdish and The Mexican segue to the raucous fun of family entertainments like Stuart Little 1 and 2 and Disney’s Lilo and Stitch as well as the Night at the Museum trilogy. The gripping tension of Blown Away and Identity yield to the romantic film noir of The Bodyguard, while edgy comedies like Mousehunt and romantic comedies like The Father of the Bride 1 and 2, Parent Trap, and What Women Want bring heart-felt warmth. But Silvestri has also

proven adept at riding the Western range of Young Guns 2 and The Quick and the Dead while also providing thrilling macho muscle for Van Helsing and The A-Team. Alan’s talent for a dynamically heroic sound has helped propel such Marvel superheroes as Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers to spectacular world-wide success, even as he provided the restrained, anguished sound for the alcoholic pilot of Robert Zemeckis’ Flight. Silvestri’s rambunctious orchestral cheer has also helped to create the hit caveman family film The Croods. In 2014 Alan won two Emmy awards for his work on “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.” The new Cosmos updates Carl Sagan’s original series with the latest discoveries about the universe we live in and combines those facts with spectacular visual effects and animation. Most recently, Alan has composed the music for Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk. The film is the story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit’s attempt to cross the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1974. The film will be in theaters in October 2015. Alan Silvestri and his wife Sandra are longtime residents of California’s central coast. They are founders of the local branch of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Monterey branch and have served in many capacities through their long relationship with the organization since their son was diagnosed as a young child in 1992. They are also the founders of Silvestri Vineyards. Their wines show that lovingly cultivated fruit has a music all its own. “There’s something about the elemental side of winemaking that appeals to me,” he says. “Both music making and wine making involve the blending of art and science. Just as each note brings it own voice to the melody, each vine brings its own unique personality to the wine.” Whether in his studio or the vineyard, Alan continues to find inspiration and passion for music, film, family, and wine.

DAVID NEWMAN is one of today’s most accomplished creators of music for film. In his 30-year career, he has scored over 100 films, ranging from War of the Roses, Matilda,

Bowfinger, and Heathers, to the more recent Tarzan and Serenity. Newman’s music has brought to life the critically acclaimed dramas Brokedown Palace, Hoffa, and Frank Miller’s The Spirit; top-grossing comedies Galaxy Quest, The Nutty Professor, Throw Mama from the Train; and award-winning animated films Ice Age and The Brave Little Toaster. He holds an Academy Award nomination for his score to the animated feature Anastasia. His most recent score is for the Morgan Freeman / Diane Keaton movie 5 Flights Up, which opened in May 2015. Newman is also a highly sought-after conductor and appears with leading orchestras throughout the world. He has led subscription weeks with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall and regularly conducts the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl. In July 2011, he premiered West Side Story (Film with Live Orchestra) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and has conducted the work with numerous orchestras in the U.S. and abroad, including the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago,

Sydney, and Boston symphonies. Newman has also conducted the annual movie night at the Hollywood Bowl since 2007. Newman’s most recent performances took place in Lucerne, Switzerland, with the 21st Century Orchestra premiering the Film with Live Orchestra version of Back to the Future. Newman has spent considerable time unearthing and restoring film music classics for the concert hall, and he headed the Sundance Institute’s music preservation program in the late 1980s. That work continues while serving on the board of the American Youth Symphony since 2007. The son of nine-time Oscar-winning composer Alfred Newman, David Newman was born in Los Angeles in 1954. He studied violin and piano from an early age and earned degrees in orchestral conducting and violin performance from the University of Southern California. From 1977-1982 he worked extensively as a violinist in the motion picture and television industry. He is married to wife Krystyna and is the father of two girls, Diana and stepdaughter Brianne.

ABOUT THE

PROGRAM

The July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular explores the musical heritage of the United States, including Broadway, film, and marches this summer. Legendary R & B icon Smokey Robinson joins conductor Sarah Hicks and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a stirring set of his classic hits to celebrate our country’s 239th birthday. This concert opens with the rousing Overture for a Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) score that was not among his notable successes when it opened on Broadway in 1956. Candide was a complicated collaboration that was revised many times, but one of the few parts of the show that has survived more or less intact is the Overture. It encapsulates the excitement and verve of Voltaire’s fanciful story, bringing together such favorite tunes from the show as “Glitter and Be Gay” and “Make Our Garden Grow.” Vermonter Edwin Eugene Bagley (18571922) began his protean entertainment career at the age of nine as a singer and comedian with a touring troupe. He soon picked up the cornet, later adding the trombone. He worked in Boston at the Park Theater, with the Bostonians opera company, and even the Boston Symphony, where his older brother Ezra was principal trumpet in the early 1880s. He is best known as a march composer, however, for his family band. National Emblem, his most famous work, was composed in 1902, published in 1906, and recorded as early as 1908. Incorporating the beginning of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” it was a favorite of such march authorities as John Philip Sousa and Frederick Fennell, and one trio section became the traditional music in the U.S. military for color guard ceremonies.

John Williams (b. 1932) is indisputably one of the most prolific and popular composers of our time. He is the vastly influential and popular dean of American film composers, of course, but his works for the concert hall also have met with acclaim from both critics and audience – Soundings, composed for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s inaugural festivities for Walt Disney Concert Hall, was a great success, and it joined a long list of works commissioned by leading orchestras and soloists around the world. The epic Main Title from Star Wars is instantly recognizable the world over, and the score for the 1977 film that launched the franchise won Williams his third Oscar. Californian Carmen Dragon (1914-1984) was a highly successful composer, arranger, and conductor. Trained at San Jose State College, he worked as a nightclub pianist, and then as an arranger in Hollywood. He eventually scored more than 30 films, as well as television and stage shows. He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl many times in the 1950s and ’60s, recorded prolifically with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony, and served as music director of the Glendale Symphony for many years. His evocative arrangements — here of the powerful 1895 patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful” by Samuel Augustus Ward (18471903) — are still performed by orchestras and choirs around the world. Robert Lowden (1920-1998) served in the U.S. Army Band during World War II and went on to compose and arrange for Claude Thornhill’s big band and for 101 Strings. His Armed Forces Salute gathers the songs and marches of the branches of the United States military, with allusions to other patriotic music in the

transitions. The earliest version of the Army’s song was the “Caisson Song,” written by three lieutenants stationed in the Philippines in 1908. In 1917 John Philip Sousa was asked to adapt it as a march for the Field Artillery, and in that form it became a huge popular hit. “Semper Paratus” (Always Ready), the official song of the U.S. Coast Guard, was composed by Coast Guard Captain Francis S. Van Boskerck while stationed in Alaska in 1927. The “Marines Hymn” gradually acquired anonymous lyrics in the 19th century. The tune now used is based on the Gendarmes Duet from Jacques Offenbach’s operetta Geneviève de Brabant, which premiered in Paris in 1859. “The United States Air Force” – also known as “Off we go into the wild blue yonder,” its first line – was written by Captain Robert MacArthur Crawford as the “Army Air Corps Song” in 1939, and won a competition organized by the Air Corps, with a $1,000 prize from Liberty magazine. (In 1947 the words “United States Air Force” replaced “Army Air Corps” in the title.) “Anchors Away” is the fight song of the U.S Naval Academy, and was composed in 1906 by Lieutenant Charles A. Zimmerman, then bandmaster at the Academy. John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was known the world over as a bandleader and the composer of dozens of marches, as well as of operettas, orchestral suites, and songs. The three marches on tonight’s program are American classics. The Washington Post was completed by Sousa in 1889, a commission for the Washington Post newspaper award ceremonies for promising journalists and essayists. Sousa penned Semper Fidelis in 1888. The march takes its title from the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps: Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful. It was dedicated to those who inspired it – the officers and men of the United States Marine Corps. In Sousa’s own words: “I wrote Semper Fidelis one night while in tears, after my comrades of the Marine Corps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico.” It became one of his most popular marches, and Sousa himself considered it his best. The Stars and Stripes Forever! was written in 1896 while Sousa was aboard ship from England to the United States. Notes compiled from Los Angeles Philharmonic archives.

ABOUT THE

ARTISTS

Once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s “greatest living poet,” acclaimed singer-songwriter SMOKEY ROBINSON has a career that spans over four decades of hits. He has received numerous awards including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, Honorary Doctorate (Howard University), Kennedy Center Honors, and the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States. He has also been inducted into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson founded The Miracles while still in high school. The group was Berry Gordy’s first vocal group, and it was at Robinson’s suggestion that Gordy started the Motown Record dynasty. Their single of Robinson’s “Shop Around” became Motown’s first No. 1 hit on the R&B singles chart. In the years following, Robinson continued to pen hits for the group, including “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Going to a Go-Go,” “More Love,” “Tears of a Clown” (co-written with Stevie Wonder), and “I Second That Emotion.” The Miracles dominated the R&B scene throughout the 1960s and early ’70s and Robinson became Vice President of Motown Records, serving as in-house producer, talent scout, and songwriter. In addition to writing hits for the Miracles, Robinson wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats, including The Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye, and others. “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” “You Beat Me to the Punch,” “Don’t Mess with Bill,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” and “My Guy” are just a few of his songwriting triumphs during those years. John Lennon of The Beatles made countless remarks regarding Robinson’s influence on his music. The Beatles had recorded Robinson and The Miracles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” in 1963 and in 1982 another popular British group, The Rolling Stones covered the Robinson and the Miracles’ hit “Going to a Go-Go.” He later turned to a solo career where he continued his tradition of hit making with “Just to See Her,” “Quiet Storm,” “Cruisin’,” and “Being with You,” among others. He remained Vice President of Motown records until the sale of the company, shaping the label’s success with friend and mentor Berry Gordy. Following his tenure at Motown,

P16

he continued his impressive touring career and released several successful solo albums. During the course of his 50-year career in music, Robinson has accumulated more than 4,000 songs to his credit and continues to thrill sold-out audiences around the world with his high tenor voice, impeccable timing, and profound sense of lyric. Never resting on his laurels, Smokey Robinson remains a beloved icon in our musical heritage.

Noted in The New York Times as part of “a new wave of female conductors in their late 20s through early 40s,” SARAH HICKS has secured her place in “the next generation of up-andcoming American conductors.” In October of 2009 she was named Principal Conductor, Pops and Presentations of the Minnesota Orchestra; in addition to conducting most Pops and Special Presentations, she has been instrumental in creating new Pops productions while also heading the innovative classical series, “Inside the Classics” with which she recently completed a Microcommission Project with composer Judd Greenstein. Hicks concurrently holds the position of Staff Conductor of the Curtis Institute of Music. Throughout her career she has collaborated with diverse artists, from Jaime Laredo and Hilary Hahn to Josh Groban and Smokey Robinson; during the summer of 2011 she was on a two-month tour with Sting as conductor of the final leg of his Symphonicities Tour. In June of 2012 she conducted the opening concert of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, and a program featuring Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Sumi Jo, and Jackie Evancho. Hicks has guest conducted extensively both in the States and abroad, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the National Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, and the Prime Philharmonic (Seoul, Korea) and the Orchestra of la Teatro Fenice. She has led the Los Angeles Philharmonic in July 4th concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in 2012 and 2013; upcoming concerts include return engagements in San Francisco and Philadelphia as well as debuts with the Boston Pops, Pittsburgh Symphony, and Cincinnati Pops. Hicks’ past positions include Associate Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony,

Associate Conductor of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Resident Conductor of the Florida Philharmonic, and Assistant Conductor of the Philadelphia Singers, the chorus of the Philadelphia Orchestra, which she has led in radio broadcasts heard nationwide. She has also been Music Director of the Hawaii Summer Symphony, an ensemble she founded in 1991 in her hometown of Honolulu and which she led for five seasons. A committed proponent of the performance of new music, Hicks recently completed a Microcommission Project (the first of its kind) with the Minnesota Orchestra in which hundreds of people made micro-donations to fund a major new work by composer Judd Greenstein. Her recording project with the Vermont Symphony, “Triple Doubles,” featuring music of Richard Danielpour and David Ludwig with soloists Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson, was recently released on the Bridge label. She has also conducted performances with Composers in the Shape of a Pear (Cleveland) and the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble. Sarah Hicks was born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Honolulu, HI. Trained on both the piano and viola, she was a prizewinning pianist by her early teens. She received her BA magna cum laude from Harvard University in composition; her AIDS Oratorio was premiered in May of 1993 and received a second performance at the Fogg Art Museum the following December. She holds an Artists Degree in conducting from the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with renowned pedagogue Otto-Werner Mueller. In her spare time, Hicks enjoys running, yoga, her German Shepherd, cooking (and eating) with her husband, traveling, and sketching.
