Thank you for being part of Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl. As spring gives way to summer in Los Angeles, it marks an opportunity for relaxation and time with family. We know that picnicking and listening to music under a Southern California sunset is an annual tradition so many of you pass down for generations and share with newcomers to our city, and we are grateful to be part of your summer. Tonight, as part of his 100th-birthday celebration, we are thrilled to pay homage to the incredible legacy of Henry Mancini. The musical mind behind hundreds of film and television scores, Mancini earned 20 Grammy Awards and four Oscars for his inventiveness, melodic gifts, and remarkable ability to capture emotion in sound. He was a longtime favorite performer on this very stage, appearing as a conductor more than 25 times, and he was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl were a Mancini family tradition as well. Ginny Mancini watched her husband conduct for decades at the Bowl and became a constant and beloved supporter of the LA Phil. A steadfast believer in music education, Ginny served on the LA Phil’s Board of Directors for 25 years and, in 2015, became an Honorary Life Director, a title reserved for our most dedicated philanthropists, advocates, and leaders. Fitting with the Mancini family’s musical legacy, proceeds from tonight’s concert and festivities will go to support the LA Phil’s work on our stages as well as our Learning and community programs. Thank you again for your support and for being here tonight. We hope you enjoy this incredible evening.

YOLA MUSICIANS FORGE NEW PATHS IN MUSIC AND BEYOND
This evening, the Hollywood Bowl lights up to celebrate Henry Mancini’s centennial, honoring not only the composer and conductor’s timeless music but also his commitment to philanthropy and music education.
In tribute to that legacy, we shine a spotlight tonight on the LA Phil’s YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) program, which offers comprehensive music education to more than 1,700 young musicians across Los Angeles.
From its modest beginnings in 2007 with 80 students in South LA, YOLA has blossomed into a vital force in music learning, with thriving orchestra sites across the city as well as its YOLA National programs, which engage hundreds of students, teachers, and community leaders every year through regular convenings, touring opportunities, and our annual summer music festival here in Los Angeles: the YOLA National Festival.
YOLA continues to see its high school musicians graduate at a 100% rate, with all 49 seniors from the class of 2024 set to attend college. Nearly 90% of YOLA’s alumni are the first in their families to do so.
The program nurtures musical careers in addition to fostering
academic success; on average, 20% of its alumni pursue further musical studies, and this year, 28 seniors have enriched their talents and professional aspirations through the YOLA Institute, a specialized program of study that includes master classes, audition and recording support, travel stipends to attend college auditions, and other special opportunities like international touring.
Not only are YOLA musicians pursuing study and careers as musicians, but they are also finding roles connected to music that address broader societal needs. One such inspiring student, senior Mary Elizalde, has been with YOLA for 10 years since starting her violin journey in 2014. Elizalde reflected: “YOLA has been instrumental in showing me

the vast possibilities within and around music. Growing up, we didn't talk much about how music affects our mental health. This inspired me to co-found Classically Imperfect, which provides a platform to address musicians’ mental health and wellness.”
Classically Imperfect conducts interviews with accomplished musicians and educators and hosts workshops for YOLA students and in local libraries, emphasizing the importance of dialogue around these issues. Elizalde will continue this work as she pursues undergraduate degrees in psychology and music at the University of Southern California next year.
As we celebrate Henry Mancini’s 100th birthday, the connection between his philanthropic legacy and the success of programs like YOLA is palpable. Philanthropist and longtime LA Phil Board Member Ginny Mancini generously supported YOLA and the creation of its first permanent home, the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood (BYC). Mrs. Mancini attended the Center’s ribbon-cutting ceremony just a few weeks before her passing in October 2021.
Each note played at the BYC and around the world by YOLA’s young musicians echoes Ginny and Henry Mancini’s enduring influence in fostering the arts and supporting the next generation of musicians. We hope you will join us in our work to empower youth through music. Find out more at laphil.com/yola.
HENRY MANCINI
Henry Mancini (1924–1994) was among the first arrangers from the big-band-jazz era to break into the rarefied world of movie scoring. Along the way, he expanded the role of the film composer into one of popular songwriter and in-demand pops conductor in the 1960s and beyond.
Mancini won four Oscars and 20 Grammys over four decades of writing music for movies, TV, records, and the Broadway stage. Many of his tunes have gone on to become standards, recorded not just by Mancini but also by numerous popular singers and bandleaders— songs like “Moon River,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” and “Two for the Road,” as well as instrumental themes like “Peter Gunn” and “The Pink Panther Theme.”
Mancini was born in Cleveland, OH, on April 16, 1924, the son of Italian immigrants. His family settled in West Aliquippa, PA, where the boy took up flute and piano and began arranging while still a teenager. He won a scholarship to The Juilliard School before he was drafted into the military, spending most of World War II in an Army Air Corps band. Following military service, he played piano with Tex Beneke’s big band and wrote arrangements for radio, clubs, and records.
In 1952, he began a seven-year stint as a staff composer-arranger at Universal-International studios, where he learned the craft of film scoring by working on more than 100 films ranging from It Came from Outer Space to Creature from the Black Lagoon It was while working at Universal that he received his first Oscar nomination, for The Glenn Miller Story (1954), and scored the Orson Welles classic Touch of Evil (1958).
The years 1958 to 1961 changed Mancini’s life. Producer-director Blake Edwards called on him to write the music for a half-hour private-detective TV series called Peter Gunn (1958). Its driving, small-combo jazz score became a sensation, generating as much fan mail as the show’s star, Craig Stevens, and sending its soundtrack album to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. That LP won the composer the first Grammy ever awarded for Album of the Year.
Scores for popular Edwards films followed, notably the song “Moon River” for Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn as eccentric socialite Holly Golightly. Mancini won his first Oscars—for song and score— for that plaintive harmonica theme with memorable lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The soundtrack
itself won five Grammys, including Record and Song of the Year.
The partnership with the poetic Mercer continued on title songs for such films as Days of Wine and Roses (1962), Edwards’ powerful drama about alcoholism starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick; and Charade (1963), the Stanley Donen comedy-mystery with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Later, Mancini and Mercer would write the haunting song “Whistling Away the Dark” for Julie Andrews as part of the song score for Edwards’ World War I spy adventure Darling Lili (1970). Oscar nominations followed all of these efforts, with a win for “Days of Wine and Roses.”
The Pink Panther (1963) was a seminal moment in Mancini’s career. Edwards’ film, starring Peter Sellers as a bumbling French police inspector named Clouseau, sported a stealthy theme for the cat burglar played by David Niven. Mancini again called upon Mercer to supply lyrics for his Italianflavored, tongue-in-cheek love song “It Had Better Be Tonight.” The main theme took on a life of its own as the sole unifying device among six of Edwards’ subsequent Panther films. A livelier version for the animated series, featuring a smartaleck feline and a jazzy saxophone solo by Plas Johnson, helped Mancini’s melody become iconic.
When asked to choose a favorite song from that era, Mancini often cited the theme for Two for the Road (1967), which Audrey Hepburn, its star, personally asked him to write. It was another Stanley Donen film, shot on location in France and chronicling the roller-coaster history of a 12year love affair. Leslie Bricusse, another favorite Mancini lyricist, penned the words.
Mancini’s commercial and critical success throughout the 1960s made him the first American film composer to become a household name. He conducted pops concerts around the country and, in 1969, received his first commission from a major American symphony, The Philadelphia Orchestra. For it, he wrote the autobiographical suite Beaver Valley ’37; “Strings on Fire!” is from the same album, a virtuoso piece spotlighting the orchestra’s string section.
Two of Edwards’ non-Panther projects were also brightened by Mancini scores and songs, both of them Oscar-nominated: 10 (1979), about a songwriter (Dudley Moore) in the throes of a midlife crisis, for which Mancini and lyricist Robert Wells penned “It’s Easy to Say”; and That’s Life!, a 1986 film starring Jack Lemmon that produced the touching “Life in a Looking Glass” (with a Leslie Bricusse lyric).
Both composer and director enjoyed a huge success with Victor/Victoria, the hilarious 1982 film in which Edwards’ wife, Julie Andrews, played a down-on-her-luck entertainer who pretends to be a man pretending to be a woman.
James Garner also starred as the gangster who falls in love with her, Lesley Ann Warren as his dim-bulb moll, and Robert Preston as the savvy nightclub entertainer who becomes her manager. Andrews, Warren, Preston, and Edwards were all nominated for Academy Awards, and Mancini won his fourth and final Oscar (shared with lyricist Bricusse) for the film’s song score (including such tunes as “Crazy World” and “Le Jazz Hot”).
Mancini returned to the small screen, where his commercial success began, with a series of TV assignments in the 1980s. He penned themes for such popular series as Newhart, Remington Steele, and Hotel and wrote an Emmy-nominated score for one of the most popular miniseries of all time, The Thorn Birds (1983), based on the Colleen McCullough bestseller about an Australian priest (Richard Chamberlain) torn between the church and his love for Meggie (Rachel Ward) as their lives intertwine.
The Boston Pops commissioned him to write “Overture to a Pops Concert” for its 1985 centennial, and it became a staple of Mancini concerts—and other pops concerts around the country—for the rest of his conducting career. He notably made more than two dozen appearances at the Hollywood Bowl between 1960 and 1993.
Mancini died of cancer at the age of 70, on June 14, 1994. Over a 50-year career of making music, he recorded more than 90 albums, wrote 95 complete movie scores, and even more for television.
But Mancini’s lasting legacy is greater than all the statistics: He took the movie song to sublime new levels, adding at least a dozen entries to the Great American Songbook. And at a time when American popular music was in transition, he demonstrated conclusively that a composer with a strong melodic sense and inherent theatrical instincts could elevate a film both musically and dramatically, making the soundtrack as important and enduring as the film for which it was written. —Jon Burlingame

HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is composed of approximately 65 regular players, an international mix of classically trained musicians who are among the best studio musicians in Los Angeles. Many spend their days on Hollywood’s scoring stages. There is no overlap between the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and those of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra—an indicator of LA’s tremendous pool of musical talent.
YOLA
Through YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), inspired by Gustavo Dudamel’s own training as a young musician, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 1,700 young musicians—aged 6 to 18—empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. Seventeen years ago, the LA Phil and its community partners

She began singing early on as a member of the Henry Mancini Chorus, which led to a successful career in Los Angeles studios, where she appeared on countless film scores and recordings with such notable artists as Plácido Domingo, Quincy Jones, and Michael Jackson. Her debut album, Monica Mancini, accompanied her PBS television special, Monica Mancini: On Record. Her fifth album, I’ve Loved These Days, is a collection of classic ’60s songs featuring collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Jackson

To celebrate the release of the USPS Henry Mancini Commemorative Postage Stamp, Mancini kicked off a 60-city tour, followed by sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, and Tanglewood with John Williams and the Boston Pops.
The New York Times has described Mancini’s rich, expressive voice as “the glamorous vocal equivalent to diamonds flashing.”
John Williams writes: “Monica Mancini brings her talent, musicality, and most of all, love to the music, and proves that the passage of musical genes didn’t stop with the Bachs, Strausses o r Ellingtons!”
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra reappeared in 1991, under the auspices of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and led by Principal Conductor John Mauceri. In 2008, Thomas Wilkins began an appointment as Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and became the orchestra’s Principal Conductor, a position he currently holds, in June 2014.
From Mozart to Motown, the repertoire of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is as diverse as Hollywood itself. In essence, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra does it all.
musicians have performed on great stages, from the LA Phil’s iconic venues—the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall—to national and international television broadcasts, and alongside the greatest artists.
On October 15, 2021, the Los Angeles Philharmonic opened the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by Gehry Partners, LLC, the first permanent, purpose-built facility for YOLA.
