WELCOME FROM THE OPENING NIGHT COMMITTEE CHAIRS
On behalf of the Opening Night Committee, welcome to the 2013 Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl, which kicks off the LA Phil’s 92nd season at the city’s most beloved and iconic venue. We are delighted to share this occasion with an audience of loyal and generous supporters. This year the LA Phil will celebrate an evening with iconic rock legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, versatile vocalist and entertainer Patti Austin, and critically-acclaimed recording artist John Legend. On this special evening our inductees will grace the stage with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Wilkins. The Youth Orchestra of LA (YOLA) will complete the evening with an inspirational music performance. This evening we also honor our Opening Night patrons, who have generously supported the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its education programs. Your support enables us to serve more than 120,000 children and their families annually through such programs as Symphonies for Schools, SummerSounds, and Gustavo Dudamel’s signature effort, YOLA. Thank you for your support and dedication to the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl. We hope you enjoy this dazzling evening under the stars. We wish you many more memorable nights this summer at the Bowl! Sincerely, Barbara and Jay Rasulo

WELCOME TO
OPENING NIGHT AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL Each year the LA Phil kicks off its summer season by inducting performers who embody the spirit of the Hollywood Bowl into the venue’s Hall of Fame. We honor those individuals whose contributions to the world of music and appearances on stage and screen, in recordings, and at the Hollywood Bowl have made them a part of the fabric of American culture. You would be hard pressed to find artists more American or more esteemed than this year’s inductees, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Patti Austin, and John Legend. As co-founding members of Aerosmith – “America’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band” – the songwriting team of Tyler and Perry has sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, received countless awards, including the prestigious ASCAP Founders Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Having made her Apollo Theater debut at the age of four, Patti Austin has been contributing to the American songbook for more than 50 years with hits spanning the worlds of jazz, pop, and R&B. Austin took home the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for her recent album Avant-Gershwin, and she shows no signs of slowing down her recording schedule or her philanthropic efforts. Another artist whose charitable endeavors are as rich and varied as his musical output, American singer-songwriter John Legend is the recipient of nine Grammys and the Starlight Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Legend has given us such chart-topping classics as “Ordinary People” and collaborated with every major hip-hop and soul act of today, including Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and The Roots. LA Phil Chairman David Bohnett and I had the privilege of seeing Legend electrify an international audience at the White House last year. We are thrilled to celebrate his accomplishments here tonight. Each of our inductees will be joined on stage by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Principal Guest Conductor Thomas Wilkins. As we celebrate their contributions to American music and the much-anticipated annual ritual that is the Hollywood Bowl summer season, we are also ensuring that tomorrow’s Hall of Fame artists and devoted music fans are cared for and nurtured. Proceeds from this evening’s concert benefit the LA Phil’s education and community engagement programs, which serve more than 120,000 children, teachers, and adults each year. Tonight we honor the role music plays in our lives and the life of the community, and in doing so, we invest in its future. Your patronage is helping to provide unparalleled music learning opportunities, mentorship, and resources to children who might not otherwise have access to them. Thank you for your support of music education and for helping us usher in the LA Phil’s 92nd season at the Hollywood Bowl. Enjoy the concert.

YOUTH ORCHESTRA LA (YOLA) STUDENTS IN LONDON: A TOUR IN JOURNAL ENTRIES Samantha: They were really excited to meet us and Gustavo. They thought we went surfing after school! I had an epiphany during rehearsal: I need to go to a music school. I just love rehearsing and playing music. I can’t stand being in a school with no music. I just know that I want to be a musician.
YOLA students and chaperones in London Samantha Rosas, 14: Today I saw snow for the first time. I liked how it slowly fell onto our heads. It’s insane to think that just yesterday we were in L.A. For many of the ten YOLA students who traveled to London in March 2013, it was their first time on an airplane, let alone outside of the United States. But once these young musicians, most of whom had been YOLA students since the program began in 2007, played alongside London musicians of all ages, they realized that a shared passion for music allowed them to transcend geographic and cultural boundaries. These YOLA students went to London to take part in Future Play, an international symposium on music education presented by the LA Phil and the Barbican Centre. The symposium culminated in “Discover Dudamel,” an orchestral collaboration between ten YOLA students and 90 young musicians from London, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. The YOLA students documented their trip in journal entries. Their London journey began with a day of music workshops, allowing YOLA students to experiment with music that falls outside of the classical repertoire. Samantha: Today was tiring! We had breakfast and headed toward the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to have an improvisation workshop. We composed a song together based on a Japanese fisherman folk song. Afterwards we went to a secondary school and worked with some kids from a program called “Drum Works.” Abdiel Lopez, 16: During the Drum Works workshop I learned how to let loose. All my life I’ve lived as if I was being critiqued by some sort of audience. But the people at the Drum Works workshop were extremely helpful. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this much comfort among a crowd of strangers. The YOLA students ended their long day of workshops with a rehearsal of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. Though the students had practiced the piece for months, this rehearsal was special: this was the YOLA students’ first time meeting the 90 London student musicians with whom they would perform in the open rehearsal with Gustavo Dudamel.
10
Samantha’s musical ambition is one shared by many of her YOLA colleagues. The morning after that first rehearsal, YOLA student Miguel Ortega, 16, spoke on a student panel, discussing his intention to start his own El Sistema program in Oaxaca, Mexico. Miguel reflected on his own past, recalling the path he was headed down when he found the clarinet. To put it most simply, Miguel said, “Music saved my life.” As the culminating event of the Future Play symposium, the YOLA students performed in the open rehearsal with LA Phil Music Director Gustavo Dudamel. After working on Romeo and Juliet, the orchestra played their encore. Samantha: We ended with “Nimrod” [from Elgar’s Enigma Variations]. I fell in love with that piece. Gustavo made us really feel it. He brings the best out of everyone. He’s extremely passionate about what he does. Playing with kids from the UK was an experience. It’s amazing how people can talk about what they love with people from a completely different continent. On their last day in London, the YOLA students traveled to In Harmony Lambeth, an El Sistema-inspired program outside of London. Raymond Chavez, 15: In Harmony Lambeth was a lot like YOLA – young children eager for musical knowledge. I soon noticed the eyes of the student next to me, looking at me as I played my clarinet. He had only been playing clarinet for a week. He wanted to play music, but he hadn’t been taught yet. So I decided to change that. I decided to take him out of the rest of the orchestra and work with him one-on-one. I felt as if I needed to, as if it were my responsibility. I began with the very basics: breathing. After busy days on the other side of the world, the students headed to Los Angeles to share the lessons and stories of their trip with their friends, families, and colleagues back home. Raymond: This trip was a great way to meet teachers and the YOLA family in a different way and form stronger friendships. I really hope one day, when we have a professional YOLA orchestra (or sooner!), we can do this again. Now, off to LA to continue our normal lives. The students’ experiences in London echo YOLA’s position in a growing international movement. As YOLA continues to reach deeper into its communities, the inspiration of El Sistema extends around the world.

Embodied in the Future Play symposium was the fulfillment of the aspirations of so many: the YOLA musicians, who believe that a devotion to music can strengthen communities at home and abroad; the LA Phil and its Take a Stand partners, who seek to build a network of individuals and institutions passionate about the future of music education; and all those who believe that music has a social power that can unite people from other sides of the world. Tonight, those aspirations are brought onstage, as those ten YOLA musicians, alongside their colleagues, bring their talent back home to Los Angeles to ring in the new season at the Hollywood Bowl. 12
Leadership support for the LA Phil’s Educational Initiatives is provided by the Peggy Bergmann YOLA Endowment Fund, the Lee and Hope Landis Warner YOLA Student Fund, Norma D. Kayser Trust, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, Rose Hills Foundation, Max H. Gluck Foundation, Anonymous, William Randolph Hearst Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, Walt Disney Company, and Toyota Motor Sales, Inc. Additional support is provided by the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation through the League of American Orchestra’s Getty Award program.
What is YOLA? YOLA, the LA Phil’s pioneering music education initiative, is modeled after El Sistema, the revolutionary Venezuelan music education program that has nurtured thousands of young musicians, including Gustavo Dudamel. Like El Sistema, YOLA provides free instruments, intensive music training, and ensemble performance opportunities to children throughout Los Angeles who would not otherwise be able to afford them. YOLA’s impact extends beyond the musical: with the support of the YOLA community, students are empowered to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. YOLA programming is possible because of the work of extraordinary partnerships. At YOLA sites, all partners share program design, management, and financial responsibilities for the program. YOLA at EXPO, founded in 2007 in South LA, is a partnership of the LA Phil, Harmony Project, and the EXPO Center, a Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility. YOLA at EXPO has grown to include 300 students, ages 8-18, comprising 3 orchestras.
Harmony Project is supported by generous grants from the John W. Carson Foundation, the Roth Family Foundation, the Green Foundation, the Ray Charles Foundation, the Herb Alpert Foundation, the Jay & Rose Philips Family Foundation, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and Howard and Jackie Banchik. The EXPO Center Youth Orchestra is supported by the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, The Friends of EXPO Center, the Tuffli Family Foundation, the Ahmanson Foundation, the Green Foundation, the Walmart Foundation & California Advisory Council, Betty Anderson, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, LA Medical Center, and the Rotary Club of LA. HOLA’s youth orchestra program is made possible by the Weingart Foundation, the Ziering Family Foundation, the W.M. Keck Foundation, the Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rosenthal Family Foundation, the Jerry & Terri Kohl Family Foundation, the Flora L. Thornton Foundation, the Colburn Foundation, the Philip and Muriel Berman Foundation, the Walt Disney Company, the CAA Foundation, and the Thomas and Dana Riccard Family.
YOLA at HOLA, founded in 2010 in Rampart, is a partnership of the LA Phil and Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA). YOLA at HOLA has grown to include 250 students, ages 5-17, in 3 ensembles.
Through the Take a Stand partnership, the LA Phil, Bard College, and the Longy School of Music of Bard College support ongoing networking and learning for those involved in El Sistema-inspired projects through fieldwide conferences and symposia, professional development workshops, and an M.A. in Teaching in Music degree program at YOLA at HOLA.

HOLLYWOOD BOWL
HALL OF FAME
2000 – Garth Brooks and John Williams It has been home to musicians, maestros, singers, dancers, actors, and composers, ranging from Igor Stravinsky to Frank Sinatra, from Bella Lewitzky to the Beatles. Its presentations of operas, ballets, plays, rock and jazz concerts, and symphonic masterpieces have touched the lives of generations. Through nine decades, the Hollywood Bowl has held esteem as a legendary venue for artists of every sort. Performing at the Hollywood Bowl is regarded by many as an honor in itself, but the luminaries we honor this evening are further distinguished by their induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Founded in 2000, the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame celebrates those consummate creators and performers who, through their talent and effort, have established themselves as true superstars – with appearances on screen, stage, recordings, and at the Bowl – whose contributions to the arts have made them part of the fabric of American culture. After inducting the first set of honorees – musicians John Williams and Garth Brooks – in 2000, the Hall of Fame expanded in 2001 to include five new cultural icons: operatic marvel Marilyn Horne, pop music superstars Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Wonder, musical theater luminary John Raitt, and the illustrious comedy troupe Monty Python. In 2002, the roster of honorees included Kathleen Battle, Bernadette Peters, Randy Newman, and George Harrison. 2003’s inductees were star of stage and screen Nathan Lane, Broadway great Patti LuPone, beloved comedy duo the Smothers Brothers, rock legend Roger Daltrey, and famed past maestro Leopold Stokowski. In 2004 we welcomed three more great musicians – Sarah Chang, Henry Mancini, and Brian Wilson – to the Hall of Fame. We inducted pop icon Frank Sinatra, master violinist Joshua Bell, and country star Trisha Yearwood in 2005. In 2006 we added pianist André Watts – a favorite with Bowl audiences and a regular here at the venue – and the multi-faceted guitarist Carlos
14
Santana, who first appeared here in 2003. In 2007, acclaimed tenor Plácido Domingo – who made his Bowl debut in La traviata in 1971 – and conductor John Mauceri, Founding Director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, were inducted. For 2008, we inducted flute wizard Sir James Galway, who made his Hollywood Bowl – and his U.S. orchestral – debut in 1978; Broadway and film diva Liza Minnelli; and bluesmaster B.B. King (Hollywood Bowl debut 1973). For the tenth annual Hall of Fame celebration, we inducted legendary soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, who made her Hollywood Bowl debut in 1975, and singing sensation Josh Groban, who first appeared on a Hall of Fame gala in 2003 and became a spokesperson for the LA Phil’s music education programs. In 2010 we added pop culture icon Donna Summer, who made her Hollywood Bowl debut in 1979; the Carpenters, who won three awards at the 1966 Hollywood Bowl “Battle of the Bands” to launch their career; and world-renowned pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who made his Bowl debut in 1989. In 2011 Grammy- and Emmy-winning singer/musician/actor Harry Connick, Jr., who made his Hollywood Bowl debut in 1994, and seventime Grammy-winning pop music superstar Gloria Estefan, who made her Hollywood Bowl debut in 1988, were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Last summer, Reba McEntire, the best-selling country artist of all time, who made her Hollywood Bowl debut in 2007, and ten-time Grammywinning singer/songwriter Chaka Khan, whose Bowl debut came in 2005, were added to the Hall of Fame.
2012 – Reba McEntire and Chaka Khan This year we are proud to honor Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of the iconic rock band Aerosmith, which first performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 1999, versatile vocalist/entertainer Patti Austin, who made her Bowl debut in 1991, and acclaimed recording artist John Legend, who first appeared on the Bowl stage in 2006. Their addition to this growing roster of great performers recognizes their contributions to the history and the musical legacy of the Bowl.

PATTI AUSTIN INDUCTEE
Since breaking through to solo success in the mid 1970s, Grammy winner PATTI AUSTIN has become one of the world’s most popular and versatile vocalists. A mainstay on the Billboard charts, she has 19 solo albums to her credit and has performed her awardnominated hit songs on both the Grammys and the Oscars. The ultimate jazz/R&B/pop crossover artist, Patti received a Grammy in 2008 for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her critically acclaimed Avant Gershwin, a Top Five hit on the Billboard Jazz chart. She shows off her versatility in the R&B/pop/gospel-styled 2011 release titled Sound Advice. Later this year, The Excellence of Ellington will be released as a Patti Austin vocal tribute to The Duke. She will also release a very “funky” take on some of the world’s classic fairy tales.
18
The goddaughter of musical legends Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington, Patti made her stage debut with Washington at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem at the age of four. During the 1970s she was the undisputed queen of the New York session scene; her voice was heard behind everyone from Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, James Brown, and Joe Cocker to Bette Midler, Roberta Flack, Luther Vandross, and Diana Ross, as well as on countless memorable commercial jingles. At the beginning of the 1980s, she earned a wider audience through her performances on a series of albums with Quincy Jones, including his best-selling Stuff Like That, his Grammy-winning classic, The Dude, and From Q With Love Vols. 1 & 2. A major highlight of Patti’s career is her special relationship with her fans in Asia. She has traveled to the Philippines and Japan throughout the years and recently has developed an excellent following in China. She even sings several songs flawlessly in the Mandarin language to the delight of her fans in China. Patti also has performed with the legendary Francis Yip for Chinese fans in America. She is a gifted songwriter and performer whose early solo career resulted in the chart-topping, Grammynominated hit “Baby Come to Me,” a now-classic duet with James Ingram; the R&B smash “The Heat of Heat”; and the Oscar-nominated “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” A later stint at GRP Records produced 1991’s Carry On, followed by Love Is Gonna Getcha (featuring the across the board hit “Through the Test of Time”), That Secret Place, and Patti Austin Live (recorded at New York’s Bottom Line), which showcased her amazing standup comedic skills and brilliant impersonations. Her 1998 album In and Out of Love spent almost two years on the contemporary jazz charts. In 1999-2000, she recorded On the Way to Love, a superb Warner Brothers album, produced by Paul Brown. Patti continues her commitment to social issues through her work to end domestic violence and gives countless hours to her mentoring work through The Over My Shoulder Foundation, which she co-founded. As she continues to thrill audiences with her recordings and concerts, Patti Austin remains one of the entertainment world’s treasures.

JOHN LEGEND
INDUCTEE
JOHN LEGEND is a nine-time Grammy-winning recording artist, critically acclaimed concert performer, and philanthropist/social activist, and he was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. Legend’s debut album, Get Lifted (2004), sold more than three million copies worldwide and earned an astounding eight Grammy nominations with three wins for Best New Artist, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B album. Legend’s follow-up album, Once Again (2006) earned RIAA platinum certification and a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. High off the success of his third consecutive Top 10 album, Evolver (2008), Legend embarked on an extensive world tour with an 11-piece band – his largest traveling show to date. Inspired by the monumental 2008 presidential election, Legend teamed up with The Roots to release the socially conscious album Wake Up! (2010). The album was nominated for five Grammys and won Best R&B Album, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B song (for “Shine” – an original composition also featured in Academy Awardwinning director Davis Guggenheim’s documentary film Waiting for Superman), along with two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Album and Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration. In 2007, Legend launched the Show Me Campaign, a nonprofit organization fighting poverty around the world. Legend also sits on the Boards of The Education Equality Project, Teach for America, and the Harlem Village Academies. Legend has been honored several times for his activism, including the 2010 BET Humanitarian of the Year Award, the 2009 CARE Humanitarian Award for Global Change, and the 2009 Africare’s Bishop John T. STEVEN TYLER & JOE PERRY OF AEROSMITH INDUCTEES As co-founding members of Aerosmith – America’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band – the songwriting team of STEVEN TYLER and JOE PERRY have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are the recipients of countless awards, including four Grammys, eight American Music Awards, six Billboard Awards, and 12 MTV Video Music Awards, among many other honors. With scores of multi-platinum albums, Aerosmith continues to inspire generations to get their wings, to get a grip, and to just push play. It’s no wonder their songs remain relevant to this day and they’re one of the most beloved bands of all time. The band’s 15th studio album, released in 2012, Music From Another Dimension! features songs penned by both Tyler and Perry, who also served as producers on the CD. Tyler and Perry are the iconic songwriters of Aerosmith. Tyler is considered one of rock’s most recognizable and dynamic frontmen, and Rolling Stone called him “one of the greatest singers of all time.” As the electrifying lead guitarist of Aerosmith, Perry has achieved permanent iconic stature in the pantheon of rock, as he was immortalized in 2008 when Aerosmith made history and created a cultural firestorm with the Activision-released Guitar Hero: Aerosmith.

Their productions on behalf of a variety of philanthropies have helped raise more than $30 million. They created the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame on behalf of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.
