GREETINGS
Vern Evans
WELCOME TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL! Welcome to our 97th season at the Hollywood Bowl, and the conclusion of Gustavo Dudamel’s ninth season as our Music & Artistic Director! Gustavo will be conducting three weeks this summer, with programs including a continuation of our Bernstein 100 Celebration, Rachmaninoff’s beloved Second Piano Concerto with sensational pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, a concert performance of Verdi’s operatic masterpiece Otello, two nights with guitar wizards Rodrigo y Gabriela, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Itzhak Perlman, and a Shakesperean Tchaikovsky Spectacular with actors and fireworks. As always, we bring a huge diversity of musical genres and styles to our Hollywood Bowl season. Highlights this season include a striking range of dance – Bon Iver & Tu Dance, tap master Savion Glover, and Wynton Marsalis’ “animal ballet” Spaces with Lil Buck and Jared Grimes; an expansion of our films-with-live-orchestra offerings; and we pay tribute to John Williams on the 40th anniversary of his Hollywood Bowl debut. We also host our first-ever night of norteño in celebration of Mexican Independence Day, with musicians from our Youth Orchestra Los Angeles joining Los Tigres del Norte. We’re thrilled to welcome back Thomas Wilkins, now in his 11th season as Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, with programs including Opening Night with Diana Ross; the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular (with The Go-Go’s and the LA Phil); Jennifer Hudson with Orchestra; Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and Christopher Cross with Orchestra; Seal with Orchestra; Charlie Wilson with Orchestra; and The Pink Panther – in Concert. We thank all members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the County Chief Executive Office, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. The Hollywood Bowl is one of Los Angeles’ most iconic and beloved venues, and it takes support from many people to bring you these many glorious evenings of entertainment and inspiration each summer. Lastly, I salute our foundation, corporate, and media partners, and all our donors, who provide such immense support to us and enable us to bring such exciting programs each year to the Hollywood Bowl stage. I wish you many happy evenings under the stars!
I am delighted to welcome you all to our wonderful Hollywood Bowl. The summer 2018 schedule is jam-packed with a wide assortment of exhilarating performances, chosen to entertain the tastes of the wide variety of people who live in and visit our eclectic and diverse County. The Hollywood Bowl is the largest natural outdoor amphitheater in the country and one of the prized treasures in the County’s world-renowned collection of arts venues. For nearly a century, residents and visitors have gathered at the Hollywood Bowl to experience incredible performances under the stars, hike to the top of the Bowl to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood sign, or catch an early morning orchestra rehearsal. I am the proud steward of many great public institutions throughout L.A. County, but the Hollywood Bowl is especially near and dear to my heart. For as long as I can remember, I have been coming to the Bowl each summer to enjoy good food and great music with friends and family. There are few things I enjoy more than a summer night at the Bowl. So, whether you are a long-time or first-time concertgoer, add to your collection of Hollywood Bowl memories by making some new ones tonight. Believe me, they will last you a lifetime! Thank you so much for being part of the Hollywood Bowl audience. I am proud and grateful to have the opportunity to represent and serve the Supervisorial District that can call itself home to this great Los Angeles icon! GUSTAVO DUDAMEL As an internationally renowned symphonic and operatic conductor, Gustavo Dudamel is motivated by a profound belief in music’s power to unite and inspire. He currently serves as Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the impact of his leadership extends from the greatest concert stages to classrooms, cinemas, and innovative digital platforms around the world. Dudamel also appears as guest conductor with some of the world’s most famous musical institutions. In 2017/18, he tours Europe with the Berlin Philharmonic, and takes the Vienna Philharmonic on a tour of the Americas, with concerts in New York’s Carnegie Hall, Mexico City’s Bellas Artes, Bogotá’s Teatro Mayor, Santiago de Chile’s Teatro Municipal, as well as Buenos Aires’ famed Teatro Colón. This season also sees Dudamel’s return to the opera house, conducting a new production of Puccini’s La bohème at the Opéra National de Paris. In 2017, he was the youngest-ever conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert, watched annually by over 60 million people in 90 countries. Dudamel is now in his ninth season as Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the orchestra has dramatically expanded the scope of its community outreach programs, including most notably his creation of Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), influenced by the philosophy of Venezuela’s admired El Sistema, which encourages social development through music. With YOLA and diverse local educational initiatives, Dudamel brings music to children in underserved communities of Los Angeles. These programs have in turn inspired similar efforts throughout the United States, as well as in Sweden (Hammarkullen), Scotland (Raploch), and around the world. Now in his 19th year as Music Director of the El Sistema project in Venezuela, Dudamel remains committed to his vision that music unites and transforms lives. He advocates the combination of music and the arts as essential to the education of young people around the world. Dudamel’s
commitment to young people and music is fueled by his own transformative experience in Venezuela’s El Sistema, a program initiated by José Antonio Abreu in 1975. Further afield, he has worked on numerous occasions with El Sistema Japan, and with the Sendai Youth Philharmonic in the wake of the 2011 tsunami. He actively supports projects such as Big Noise in Scotland, Vienna’s Superar program, SerHacer in Boston, and El Sistema Sweden, with which he initiated an international “Orchestra of the Future” comprising young people from five continents, to perform together on the occasion of the 2017 Nobel Prize Concert. Recordings, broadcasts, and digital innovations are also fundamental to Dudamel’s passionate advocacy for universal access to music. Dudamel has independently produced an all-Wagner recording available exclusively for download, a complete set of Beethoven symphonies for digital learning, and a broadcast of two Stravinsky ballets with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra in cooperation with the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall.
Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most decorated conductors of his generation. He received the Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award in 2016, and the 2014 Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society from the Longy School of Music. He was named Musical America’s 2013 Musician of the Year, one of the highest honors in the classical music industry and was voted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame. Access to music for all has been the cornerstone of Dudamel’s philosophy both professionally and philanthropically. Inspired by his early musical and mentoring experiences, the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation, a registered charity, was created in 2012 with the goal of promoting access to music as a human right and catalyst for learning, integration, and social change. For more information about Gustavo Dudamel, visit his official website: gustavodudamel.com. You can find more about the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation at dudamelfoundation.org.

Packed with striking scenes, frenzied emotion, and choral songs of great power and beauty, Bacchae endures as one of Euripides’s greatest surviving works. Dionysus, the god of wine, ritual madness, fertility, and theater, arrives in disguise to his birthplace in Greece. As revenge for a personal slight, he begins to spread his cult among the people of Thebes. King Pentheus, fearing the ensuing disorder, imprisons him. This misguided attempt to thwart divine will leads to catastrophe.

Hollywood Bowl, Summer Home of the LA Phil
LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, presents an inspiring array of music, through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. Both at home and abroad, the Philharmonic – recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras – is leading the way in groundbreaking programming, both on stage and in the community, offering a diverse range of programs that reflect the orchestra’s artistry and demonstrate its vision. 2017/18 marks the orchestra’s 99th season. More than 250 concerts are either performed or presented by the LA Phil at its two iconic venues: the Frank Gehrydesigned Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season, with approximately 165 performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the symphonic music experience and delve further into certain artists’ or composers’ work. Since 1922, its summer
home has been the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all genres of music. The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond symphony concerts in a concert hall, with performances in schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its wide-ranging education initiatives is Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). Inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and leadership training to nearly 800 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them through multi-year engagement to be college-ready and on a path to becoming vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. The orchestra also undertakes tours, including regular visits with partners in New York, Paris, and Tokyo, among others. The Philharmonic has been an International Associate at London’s Barbican Centre since 2009. The orchestra’s very first tour was in 1921, and the Philharmonic has
made annual tours beginning with the 1969/70 season. The orchestra has a substantial catalog of concerts available online, including the first full-length classical music video released on iTunes. In 2017, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen were nominated for a Grammy for Best Classical Compendium for their live recording of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a millionaire and amateur musician, who established the city’s first permanent symphony orchestra in 1919. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, ten renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodzinski (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

A DECADE OF HIGHLIGHTS Thomas Wilkins’ Tenth Anniversary Season This summer marks the tenth anniversary season for Thomas Wilkins as Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. As the ensemble’s first titled leader since Founding Director John Mauceri retired in 2006, Wilkins has become an audience favorite, leading the HBO in programs featuring such varied artists as The Muppets, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sir James Galway, Bebel Gilberto, Chris Isaak, Jewel, Seu Jorge, Bettye LaVette, the Peking Acrobats, Pink Martini, Todd Rundgren, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Donna Summer, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and the Simpsons. “Every year seems to be a highlight,” Wilkins says. “Earth, Wind & Fire (2010 and 2013) and Chicago (2016) are among my fondest memories. The Beatles night (2010) was really spectacular. We did ‘Hey, Jude’ and everybody was waving their glowing cellphones – it was a stunning evening.” Wilkins made his Hollywood Bowl debut conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic in
the annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular in 2007 and then led the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra with guests Pink Martini in the Fireworks Finale. This summer, he leads the HBO in eight performances, featuring a bounty of stellar singers, from Opening Night with Diana Ross (June 16) through two shows with Jennifer Hudson (July 6, 7) and two evenings with Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and Christopher Cross (July 13, 14), to Seal (July 18) and a weekend with Charlie Wilson (August 3, 4). “I work at the pleasure of the soloist,” Wilkins says. Knowing when the singer wants to breathe, where they are in their register, whether they want to push ahead – these are all things Wilkins studies and is constantly listening to. “You are accompanying – it is your job to make their life as easy as possible at the moment.” Wilkins also has a rather different challenge on his plate this summer: The Pink Panther – in Concert (August 8). singers phrase freely, a film is remorseless in its progression. “This was something I had to learn, working at the Bowl,” says Wilkins. “You have to pay attention to your instincts about phrasing and not get carried away; it’s a little confining. “The first time I worked with a click track, I took my earpiece off to welcome the audience. And then, as I turned back to the orchestra to begin, I heard it beeping, lying on the music stand. It was quite a scramble to get it back on. “So, that is my important advice: make sure you keep your earpiece on!” Wilkins also works regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This summer, he conducts that orchestra in the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, featuring The Go-Go’s (July 2, 3, 4). “We had The Go-Go’s on Opening Night a few years ago (2014),” Wilkins remembers. “That was something of a surprise to me. The audience was mammoth [the program also featured Pink Martini and Kristin Chenoweth] and The Go-Go’s came and just knocked it out of the park!” For the LA Phil’s Centennial season continued on pg. 54

TOUR TRIUMPHS! Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic hit the road for two weeks in April and May, taking a striking range of music to major venues on the East Coast and in Europe. Tour stops included Symphony Hall in Boston; the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; two dates at David Geffen Hall in New York City; three concerts at the Barbican in London, where student musicians from Youth Orchestra Los Angeles joined the orchestra in its third International Associate Residency; and two concerts at the Philharmonie in Paris. continued on pg. 26

Gustavo Dudamel – who trained as a young violinist – faces off with LA Phil Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour before the concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
“Much more, though, is to come out of the alto-flute solo and shimmering tensions at the start of Amériques, still a masterpiece with the capacity to astound nearly a century after it was composed. Dudamel held a line through the fragmentary early stages, and the orchestra wrought its magic at every turn, with amazingly precise and brilliant Latin flares from the violins. The final thrash, all screams and lunges, was simply stunning.” — David Nice, theartsdesk.com

Gustavo Dudamel with LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen, whose new Pollux – an LA Phil commission – was part of the tour repertory.
“What defines the Los Angeles Philharmonic? Is it the music and artistic director Gustavo Dudamel’s exciting performances of symphonies central to the repertory? Or is it the risks the orchestra takes on rarities and new pieces — including what feels like a Year of 1,000 Commissions for its centennial next season? (O.K., not quite that many. But it’s a lot.) “The fact that the answer is, truly, ‘both’ is a testament to the Philharmonic’s excellence on more fronts than almost any other ensemble.” — Seth Colter Walls, The New York Times
Looking out at Symphony Hall in Boston from a percussion perspective during rehearsal.
“Dudamel’s impassioned reading of the [Shostakovich Symphony No. 5] was captivating in a different way…The shadows that lay across even a cheery carousel-like waltz stemmed from just how big the sound was; when facing off with something that vast, one has no choice but to feel small and surrounded, like a child lost at a parade. The Largo stretched towards tenderness, and a quiet glimmering passage for harp and flutes was arrestingly intimate in comparison to the onslaught that had preceded it. Dudamel ripped through the beginning of the final movement at a Bernstein-esque speed, but reined in the final march, and between the insistent quavers and beats of the strict rhythm seemed to lie carefully compressed rage about to shake loose.” — Zoë Madonna, Boston Globe

THE LATEST FROM THE LA PHIL SALONEN SONY CATALOG RELEASED
Bach transcriptions to Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, from Haydn symphonies to Bernard Herrmann’s film scores, from Marsalis’ jazz oratorio All Rise to John Corigliano’s Red Violin film music, and from imposing collections of Stravinsky and Nielsen (seven discs each) to generous samplings of his contemporary colleagues Magnus Lindberg, Anders Hillborg, and Kaija Saariaho.
ITURBI FOUNDATION SPONSORS JULY CONCERT LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen is one of the most strikingly multifaceted artists working in classical music today, as renowned as a composer of intricately beautiful works as he is as a conductor of astonishing range and depth. Released in May, Esa-Pekka Salonen: The Complete Sony Recordings offers a compelling measure of Salonen’s creativity in a 61-disc box set. Salonen was Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 17 years, and that partnership is represented on 23 discs. These include a Mahler Fourth Symphony of “overriding accomplishment” (Gramophone) with soprano Barbara Hendricks, the renowned Das Lied von der Erde with tenor Plácido Domingo, Sibelius’ enormous, dramatic Kullervo (“The Los Angeles Philharmonic plays as if it has the work in its blood…this is an issue to treasure.” – BBC Music Magazine), the four Lutoslawski symphonies (including the Grammy-winning Third), the Bartók Piano Concertos with Yefim Bronfman (which also won a Grammy), and three of Salonen’s own works, including the groundbreaking LA Variations. Other long-term collaborations featured in the set include 12 discs with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra (where he was Principal Conductor in 1985-1994) and 14 discs with the Philharmonia Orchestra (where he has been Principal Conductor since 2008). In addition to Hendricks, Domingo, and Bronfman, Salonen’s soloists include Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Gidon Kremer, Wynton Marsalis, and Dawn Upshaw, among others. The repertory ranges from
José Iturbi and Frank Sinatra relaxing in dressing room and reviewing evening’s set list before their concert at the Hollywood Bowl, August 14, 1943.
For four decades, world-famous concert pianist and conductor José Iturbi (1895-1980) headlined sold-out performances at the Hollywood Bowl. This summer, Iturbi returns in spirit as the José Iturbi Foundation (JIF) sponsors “Dudamel Conducts Rachmaninoff” on July 12, featuring Khatia Buniatishvili playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Dudamel and the LA Phil. During the mid-20th century, Iturbi was considered to be one of the world’s greatest and most popular classical pianists and conductors. He made his record-breaking six-performance Hollywood Bowl debut in August 1934, and continued to perform at the Bowl regularly, often with his sister, pianist Amparo Iturbi. In 1950, Iturbi became the first musician to sell more than a million copies of a single record – Chopin’s “Military” Polonaise. This milestone was recognized with Iturbi receiving a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s world-famous “Walk of Fame.” Since Iturbi’s charisma resonated with audiences of all ages, he starred in seven MGM films in the 1940s, giving him the
opportunity to reach out to millions of movie fans and help popularize classical music… one note at a time! One of Iturbi’s favorite film roles was in Anchors Aweigh (1945), co-starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as sailors; in search of Iturbi, they find him rehearsing on stage under the famous shell at the Hollywood Bowl. The José Iturbi Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy of Iturbi by fulfilling his wish to make classical music accessible to people of all ages through blockbuster concerts with world-famous classical musicians. JIF also spotlights today’s greatest emerging talents and prizewinning musicians through concert performances and with the José Iturbi International Music Competition, dubbed the “Classical Idol” of classical music competitions by the Associated Press.

COMING SOON
LA PHIL CENTENNIAL SEASON AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL Under the leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 100th season celebrates the artistic spirit, vision, and virtuosity inspired by the city the orchestra calls home. Subscriptions are available now, Create-YourOwn packages became available June 5, and single tickets go on sale August 5. It all starts September 27, with the Opening Night Concert & Gala California Soul, honoring Golden State creativity from John Adams to Frank Zappa in a festive program directed by Elkhanah Pulitzer, with Gustavo Dudamel at the helm of the LA Phil. Then three days later (Sep 30), Walt Disney Concert Hall will be connected to the Hollywood Bowl in Celebrate LA!, a free, day-long extravaganza capped by a massive concert at the Bowl, featuring Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and very special guests.
LA PHIL MUSIC DIRECTORS
All of the orchestra’s living Music Directors will be taking part in our centennial celebrations. Dudamel leads the LA Phil in 20 programs this season, beginning with the genre-bending LA Fest. His other highlights include an unprecedented collaboration with choreographer Benjamin Millepied in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, the world premiere of John Adams’ new piano concerto with Yuja Wang, the complete cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with Lang Lang, and the season-ending spectacle of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. The fall of 2019 will mark a milestone: ten years since Dudamel became our Music Director. Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen (Music Director 1992-2009) focuses on Stravinsky for two weekends, explores Weimar Republic with soprano Audra McDonald, and leads the world premiere of our latest commission from Dutch master Louis Andriessen. Zubin Mehta (Music Director 1962-1978) conducts a Brahms Cycle that matches the composer’s four symphonies with his four concertos, with soloists Yefim Bronfman, Pinchas Zukerman, and Amanda Forsyth. André Previn (Music
Director 1985-1989) is composing a new work for the culmination of our Centennial in the fall of 2019.
CREATIVE COLLABORATORS
The LA Phil family includes some of the world’s most distinguished and forward-facing artists in titled positions. Creative Chair for Jazz Herbie Hancock brings musical worlds together in unprecedented ways. He launches our jazz series during LA Fest, joined by Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and for the first time ever, curates an entire Green Umbrella program of new music from artists who are obliterating the border between composed and improvisational music. Our Artist-Collaborator – and MacArthur Fellow – Yuval Sharon puts his distinctive mark on John Cage’s Europeras 1 and 2, curates a reality video-walk around Walt Disney Concert Hall by Canadian artists Cardiff+Miller, and directs Meredith Monk’s haunting three-act opera Atlas. Susanna Mälkki, the LA Phil’s first Principal Guest Conductor in a generation, returns to Shakespeare for a new production of The Tempest with incidental music by Sibelius, leads a pair of orchestral programs that feature the world premiere of a commissioned piece by Steve Reich and Messiaen’s epic Turangalîla Symphony, and premieres four new works on a Green Umbrella program. Creative Chair John Adams is composing a new piano concerto for us and Yuja Wang,
which we will take on tour, and his music will be featured on the opening gala. He will conduct his own work on a program with a Philip Glass world premiere and he will also lead five world premieres on a Green Umbrella program.
FIFTY COMMISSIONS
We are constantly advancing our art and have commissioned more than 50 works from an astounding group of artists. In addition to major works from titans such as Adams, Reich, Glass, Andriessen, Unsuk Chin, and Julia Wolfe, our audiences will also hear new work from pioneering young composers such as Kamasi Washington, Tyshawn Sorey, Du Yun, and Andrew Norman.
THE STARS ALIGN
Leading artists from around the globe will join us in the 2018/19 centennial season, including John Adams, Thomas Adès, Refik Anadol, Emanuel Ax, Daniel Barenboim, Yefim Bronfman, Cameron Carpenter, Ray Chen, Lila Downs, Hélène Grimaud, Herbie Hancock, Kodo, Lang Lang, Susanna Mälkki, Audra McDonald, Zubin Mehta, Benjamin Millepied, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Murray Perahia, Itzhak Perlman, Bernadette Peters, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Peter Sellars, Yuval Sharon, Snarky Puppy, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Michael Tilson Thomas, Yuja Wang, Pinchas Zukerman, and many more. FOOD + WINE
A SUMMER RECIPE Tamar and Shimon Rothstein
BY SUZANNE GOIN
SUMMER FRUIT SALAD WITH ARUGULA AND MARCONA ALMONDS • MAKES 6 SERVINGS
• 2 tablespoons finely diced shallot • 3 tablespoons sherry vinegar • 12 fresh figs, stems removed and cut in half • 7 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 ripe nectarine • 1 ripe peach • 2 ripe plums • ½ basket (about 1 cup) blackberries or Persian mulberries • 8 ounces arugula, cleaned and dried • ½ lemon, for juicing • 2/3 cup Marcona almonds • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
This recipe is a way to show off the best summer fruit you can find. If possible, use an assortment of fruits, such as plums, peaches, figs, and berries, but make sure that all the fruit is up to snuff. Rather than striving for variety and ending up with lessthan-ideal examples of each fruit, you’re better off with a simpler salad composed of only the most perfect nectarines or gorgeous peaches all alone. The dressing is made by pounding some of the fruit into a juicy vinaigrette. Figs are my favorite for this purpose. They mellow the vinegar and give the dressing body and chunkiness. If you’ve never had a Marcona almond, you may not forgive me for introducing you to them. Rich and dense, this Spanish almond variety is outrageously addictive. If you can’t find Marcona almonds, use toasted regular almonds or pecans.
+ Combine the shallot, vinegar, and ½ teaspoon salt in a bowl, and let sit 5 minutes.
+ Using a mortar and pestle, pound three fig halves to a coarse purée. Transfer the fig purée to the shallot mixture and whisk in the olive oil. Taste for balance and seasoning.
+ Cut the nectarine, peach, and plums in half and remove the pits, and cut them into ¼-inch-thick slices. Place the sliced fruit, remaining figs, and berries in a large bowl. Drizzle half of the vinaigrette over the fruit, and season with salt and pepper. Gently toss in the arugula, sprinkle in some more salt and pepper, and taste for seasoning, adding more vinaigrette and a squeeze of lemon if needed.
+
From Caroline Styne:
This is one of my all-time favorite Suzanne Goin salads, and is the ideal mix of sweet and savory on one plate. The fresh stone fruits and bright acidity in the vinaigrette call for a Chardonnay, either old world or new world that shows some restraint in terms of oak. A wine with too much richness and oak will overwhelm the salad and make the combination too heavy. A bright, crispy Chardonnay will keep the elements on the palate zesty and alive.
From the Hollywood Bowl Wine List: 2014 Joseph Burrier, Mâcon-Fuissé 2015 Melville, Chardonnay, Sta. Rita Hills 2016 Roland Lavantureaux, Chablis
Arrange on a large chilled platter and sprinkle the nuts on top.

AT THE BOWL
COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR JOHN WICKER
As you settle into your seat with high anticipation for a great show, I think you’ll agree with me that there are few musical venues as iconic as the world-famous Hollywood Bowl! The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation is very proud of our collaborative partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which makes the Hollywood Bowl the ultimate concert experience and destination for so many artists and visitors. The Department operates and maintains 182 parks, gardens, and nature centers countywide, as well as recreational programs, activities, and facilities for public use. We provide opportunities for visitors to enjoy a picnic under a shady tree, take a scenic walk, bike, fish, swim, go boating, exercise,
or watch their children play in a safe and scenic environment. As a Department that serves more than 23 million visitors a year, we don’t take our responsibility lightly. We’re always working hard to meet the demand for quality parks and recreational programs that County residents and visitors expect and deserve. That’s why we strive to provide parks, open space, multi-use trails, and recreational programs that enhance the lives of all visitors, because we know that clean and safe parks positively impact our health and communities for the better. I encourage you to visit a beautiful and scenic County park near you and take advantage of the many programs and activities that are offered to people of all ages, many of which are free of charge. For more information, please visit parks.lacounty.gov.
As for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show, knowing you’re about to watch a performance at this incredible venue known all over the world. Welcome to the Hollywood Bowl!

coming up, Wilkins will lead the orchestra in two programs devoted to William Grant Still and the Harlem Renaissance (February 16 and 17, 2019). “These are compelling programs with a lot of different elements,” Wilkins says. “Still was the dean of African-American composers and a true pioneer, not in any clichéd sense. He was a bit like Stravinsky, constantly reinventing himself. But in the end, he returns to himself. It’s honest music – he was comfortable in his skin.” The programs feature two of Still’s symphonies. In the last movement of the “Afro-American” Symphony No. 1, which Still called “Rashana” and prefaced with lines from Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem “Ode to Ethiopia,” “you hear his reflection in life,” says Wilkins. “And the Symphony No. 4 is autobiographical, so we get a really close look at him.” The rest of the two programs include works by Duke Ellington and George Gershwin, plus the world premiere of a tribute to Still from Adolphus Hailstork, commissioned by the LA Phil. Hailstork is one of the most-played living AfricanAmerican composers, following in Still’s groundbreaking path. Wilkins is also Music Director of the Omaha Symphony, holds the Germeshausen Family and Youth Concert Chair with the Boston Symphony, and the Henry A. Upper Chair of Orchestral Conducting at Indiana University. This spring, he received the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award from the Longy School of Music, a distinction he now shares with LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel. “It was very gratifying; a beautiful event,” Wilkins reports. Like Bernstein, he has made teaching and communicating an essential part of his work. Wilkins always speaks, comfortably and candidly, to his audiences, and he works with youth wherever he is. “We will have YOLA [Youth Orchestra Los Angeles] onstage for Opening Night, and if I’m in town, I try to work with them whenever possible. I want kids to believe something about music, but also to believe something about themselves. I’ve seen some of them grow from little kids to graduates, and it is really neat to be a part of that. This is something that I tell hot young conductors, who just want to get in front of an orchestra – don’t miss the whole picture.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
FLYING LOTUS You see, no one likes talking about death. But Flying Lotus has never been one to lead the people on a simple journey. With You’re Dead! (2014) he has managed to create a shamanic pilgrimage into the psychedelic unknown of the infinite afterlife. At once reflective, restless, heart wrenching and joyous, this is a melodic ode to those who have died young, suddenly and unexpectedly – those who have passed away into another realm completely – while also existing as a comfort to those mourning the loss of a loved one, those left behind in our here and now. You’re Dead! serves as an exploration, a eulogy and a portal between these parallel domains. “My perspective comes from having lost a lot of people. A lot of my family members passed, but a lot of my colleagues passed away too soon,” says Flying Lotus. “I felt like in my own experiences, I wanted them to have this same sense of self.” Land of History & Future. Always existing simultaneously as an insider and outsider in the great lineage of jazz, here Flying Lotus has taken up the mantle of a generation. “I really wanted to do something that came from the jazz spirit instead of a beat record,” he says. In thus being in the spirit of the great fusion collectives of the 1960s and 70s, so has Flying Lotus’ universe of supporting cast expanded and evolved to encompass incredible musicians, visual artists, and personalities young and old. “I recorded every instrument individually. There was never a set band,” he says. “I can’t write sheet music, so it’s better for me to work with each person and perfect each part.” Speaking of history and future, the pairing of jazz legend Herbie Hancock and Flying Lotus is a supreme highlight of You’re Dead! Playing the Fender Rhodes, the iconic electric piano that Hancock himself popularized over myriad essential recordings, the meeting of two generations of jazz-fusion innovators is a historic occasion. “It was the coolest,” says Flying Lotus of working with Hancock. “In the middle of a take, he’ll tell you a story about Miles Davis for 20 minutes. I was really flattered that he wanted to be a part of my music.” Eternity Trip. The album’s opening piece is a pure sonic manifestation of the moment of
ending. This wrenching into a new and unfamiliar setting quickly ushers in “Tesla,” a searching for equilibrium in new and impossible surroundings. “Cold Dead” finds metaphysical eternity and futuristic fusion jazz locked in an acid-fried shredding match for the prizes of minds and souls. “Never Catch Me” is a sprint through a netherworld as Kendrick Lamar flaunts death with equal parts world-beating confidence and introspective conviction. “Life and death is no mystery and I’ve won against it,” raps Lamar. “Dead Man’s Tetris” plays with the pogo stick harmonics of the nostalgia-inducing video game and features Snoop Dogg and Captain Murphy trading verses about flirting with death and those musical legends who now reside in the hereafter, in which they find themselves upon the mic. “Stirring” maintains this sense of vertigo as it slips into “Coronus, The Terminator.” This screwed soul dirge drags itself past the ghosts of ATLiens and Soulquarians while
splicing the DNA of the classic sci-fi film with the saga of You’re Dead! “Siren Song” sees Angel Deradoorian lead a wordless incantation over a chiming mystical backdrop, seamlessly morphing into the fourth-world tumble of “Turtles” and onto “Ready Err Not,” a creeping radiophonic transmission which marks the mounting curiosity of the journeyer around the idea of death. “Descent into Madness” features Thundercat and highlights the heavier side of this exploration with a heavy dose of kaleidoscopic soul operatics, while on “The Boys Who Died in Their Sleep,” Captain Murphy scours prescription meds for the right cocktail to “take the pain away.” Slipping into the album’s final suite of songs there is much resolution and yet much that is left to the listener to internalize, questions to be answered by looking inside. You see, no one likes talking about death. But Flying Lotus has never been one to lead the people on a simple journey.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
LITTLE DRAGON Grammy-nominated Little Dragon have announced their long-awaited new album Season High, out April 14th digitally on Loma Vista Records (CD + LP in stores May 5th). This is the first new music from the electro-pop band since they released their acclaimed 2014 album, Nabuma Rubberband. Season High was produced by Little Dragon, with co-production and mixing by James Ford, in their hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. Discussing the process behind recording Season High, Yukimi muses, “We have grown through the years but the making of this album has been a struggle. As much as our band is based on a deep friendship, we are four strong wills who find it really frustrating to compromise. We have gotten better at that though, but it’s still a real battle. It gets harder and harder for us to make records but we still love it. Sometimes it feels like we have 100% passion and life or death emotions yet there’s a pointlessness with everything. We want to exist in our own bubble where we can stay curious about sounds. The magic feeling that sounds can sprinkle over any boring day is what got us all hooked. That feeling of escapism …maybe because Gothenburg is a grey place for most of the year, our curse and blessing is that we never quite succeed.” little-dragon.net
BADBADBADNOTGOOD BADBADBADNOTGOOD is the talented young quartet of James Hill on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, Alex Sowinski on drums, and Leland Whitty on saxophone. They formed and became inseparable friends at Humber College’s Music Performance program in 2011 and have been on a critically acclaimed, rule-bending musical journey ever since. BBNG took the music world by storm with their 2014 LP, III, a brash yet refined record of angular jazz improvisations, lush ballads, kraut rock, and futuristic hip-hop tinged rhythms which led to a couple of years of touring the world and collaborating with some of the best and brightest artists around the globe. In 2016, the boys came back with a new album, IV, their most impressive and highly anticipated project yet. IV continues their forward-thinking progression, sounding something like a jam session in space between Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell, and MF DOOM. With tracks like “Time Moves Slow,” featuring haunting vocals from Sam Herring of Future Islands, the syncopated groove of “Lavender,” a collaboration with Montreal based producer Kaytranada, the rumbling fusion build of “Confessions Pt. II,” featuring Colin Stetson on the bass sax, “Love” which is highlighted with smoky left-field raps from Mick Jenkins, and the epic chords of “Speaking Gently,” IV is an exploration in post-genre virtuosity. With this 2016 release on Innovative Leisure Records, BBNG proved yet again that the possibilities and discovery in their musical quest are infinite.
GEORGIA ANNE MULDROW Part of the fabric of Los Angeles’ hip-hop / jazz / soul avant-garde since 2005, Georgia Anne Muldrow has built a mightily impressive discography and a reputation to match during her career as a vocalist, songwriter, producer, and musician. It is fitting that in 2018 she should sign to Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder imprint – a record label deeply embedded in L.A., with a ton of shared history and a united vision of the future – to release her stunning new album. She first lit up the scene with her debut album Olesi: Fragments of an Earth (2006) on cult L.A. imprint Stones Throw. It was there that Georgia met, befriended, and collaborated with the likes of Madlib, Oh No, MED (fka Medaphor), Wildchild, DJ Romes, and her future partner Dudley Perkins aka Declaime. She co-founded the SomeOthaShip Connect record label with Dudley in 2008, the platform and springboard for many of her musical travels that have expanded and extended down myriad pathways under numerous monikers, including Ms. One, Pattie Blingh & The Akebulan 5, an electro fusion collaboration with DJ Romes called Blackhouse, and astral jazz outings as Jyoti – a project that earned her the Jazz Album of the Year honors at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards in 2011 for her album Ocotea. It’s Georgia’s rich musical heritage and the sheer weight of her catalogue that has earned her the respect of peers such as Mos Def (“She’s incredible. She’s like [Roberta] Flack, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, she’s something else.”), Erykah Badu (with whom she collaborated on New Amerykah, Part Two in 2010), Bilal, and Robert Glasper who invited Georgia to perform on his Miles Ahead original soundtrack album in 2016.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

FATHER JOHN MISTY Father John Misty is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Josh Tillman. Tillman has released three widely acclaimed albums – Fear Fun (2012), I Love You, Honeybear (2015) and his most recent release, Pure Comedy, his Grammy-nominated album (2017). Father John Misty has also recently contributed to songs by Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. As for his most recent album, Pure Comedy, it is a complex, often-sardonic, and, equally often, touching meditation on the confounding folly of modern humanity. The album has earned Father John Misty placement on over “50 Best of 2017” lists from Entertainment Weekly, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Pitchfork and more. The reception to Pure Comedy also led to a series of incredible performances with Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers. He recently completed a wildly successful tour in support of the Pure Comedy, and will release its follow up in 2018.

GILLIAN WELCH Gillian Welch’s rich and remarkable career spans over twenty years, and is a pillar of the modern acoustic music world. After moving to Nashville in the early 1990s, Welch was launched into the public consciousness when Emmylou Harris recorded a cover of Welch’s “Orphan Girl.” Her career continued to flourish as her 1996 debut Revival, produced by T Bone Burnett, was released to critical acclaim. Firmly on the roots music map following the release, Welch followed up that Grammy® nominated album with 1998’s Hell Among the Yearlings, a stark duet record with partner David Rawlings, further solidifying the duo as a force in the folk music scene. When Welch served as executive producer as well as a performer on the eight times platinum O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, she was awarded the Album of the Year Grammy® Award, and was simultaneously nominated for her own Time (The Revelator) which Rolling Stone called one of the best albums of the 2000s and is widely considered by critics to be one of the best albums of all time. This release was Welch-Rawlings’ first on their own record label, Acony Records, helping to establish the duo’s fierce

independence. 2003’s Soul Journey was the pair’s first experimentation with a fuller, electric sound, which paved the way for the Dave Rawlings Machine project, and their first release under Rawlings’ name (A Friend of a Friend, 2009), which was accompanied by a period of time of heavy touring and headlining major festivals while biding their time to return to the duet sound the two were traditionally known for. 2011’s The Harrow and the Harvest felt like a sonic cultivation of what the two had been honing in on and perfecting for decades, and the awards circuit noticed, nominating the album for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Engineered Album at the Grammys, Artist of the Year (Welch) and Instrumentalist of the Year (Rawlings) at the Americana Honors & Awards, along with glowing reviews and multiple mentions on year end “best of” lists. The duo returned to Rawlings’ moniker for their next two releases, 2015’s Nashville Obsolete and 2017’s Poor David’s Almanack (Grammy® nominated for Best American Roots Song for first single “Cumberland Gap“). In celebration of the twenty-year anniversary of the Welch-Rawlings partnership, the two released the first installation of
the “Boots” releases, Boots No. 1: The Official Revival Bootleg, a double album of unreleased outtakes, alternate versions, and demos from the making of the seminal 1996 debut album. This time period also saw the duo crowned with the Berklee American Masters Award and the honor of the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement for Songwriting. Welch and Rawlings continue to tour the world in support of their projects while simultaneously writing, lending their talents to countless fellow artist’s recordings, and working to release their highly celebrated catalog on phonograph record for the first time ever. BIG THIEF The trails that Brooklyn’s Big Thief – Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) – lead us down on Capacity, the band’s highly anticipated second record, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After 2016’s stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album
jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. Lenker’s songs introduce us to a gallery of multifaceted women and deal with the complicated matters of identity – at once dangerous and curious, though never unbelievable. Lenker shows us the gentle side of being ripped open. Tricked into love, done in and then witnessing the second act of pulling oneself back together to prepare for it to all happen again, but this time to a sturdier soul, one who can take the punches better than ever before and deal some jabs and roundhouses of their own. The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the first time in the studio and were recorded the same day. “There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” Lenker explains. “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
SHA NA NA Rock & Roll doo-wop legends, Sha Na Na combined their love for the classics of rock & roll with a dynamic theatrical approach as fellow college students at Columbia University in New York in 1969. They appeared just before Jimi Hendrix forty-five years ago at The Woodstock Festival in their eighth professional gig (of course the check bounced). The band rose to stardom with their portrayal of Johnny Casino and the Gamblers in the movie Grease – the highest grossing musical film of all-time – and with four seasons of their own worldwide television series, The Sha Na Na Show. Sha Na Na performed six songs on the Grease soundtrack and the song “Sandy,” sung by John Travolta, was co-written by the band’s piano man Screamin’ Scott Simon. Their latest release, Sha Na Na – Greaser High School Hop, featuring 25 signature songs, is music for an instant high school hop dance party. “The Bop,” “The Twist,” “The Stroll,” “The Hand Jive,” “The Monkey,” “The Jerk,” “The Cha Cha,” and even “The Hokey Pokey,” are among the great dances of the ’50s and ’60s celebrated by Sha Na Na in this collection. The album is available on iTunes, amazon.com, and the band’s website, shanana.com. Sha Na Na knows two things for sure: Rock & Roll is here to stay, and Grease is still the Word!
DIDI CONN Actress and comedienne Didi Conn is best known for her starring role as Frenchy, the beauty school drop-out in the films Grease and Grease II. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
BERES HAMMOND Beres Hammond is considered Jamaica’s greatest practicing singer/songwriter and anyone who has listened to his CDs or experienced the fervor elicited by his live performances would undoubtedly agree with that top-ranking assessment. His recent appearance at Jamaica’s premier music festival, Reggae Sumfest, was unanimously hailed as the finest of the three-night event as he tore through hit after hit, some dating back to the mid-’70s, consistently captivating an audience of nearly 20,000 who sang along so loudly to his beloved songs, they sometimes threatened to drown him out. That Sumfest 2008 performance was but another special moment in time within this adored artist’s enduring and truly exceptional career. The passionate singing, superb songwriting and consummate showmanship displayed by Beres Hammond at Sumfest, which has distinguished his music over the past 35 years, brilliantly shines throughout his latest release, the aptly titled A Moment in Time. Estimated by Beres to be his 25th album, A Moment in Time offers organically crafted rhythms, created by Jamaica’s finest musicians, ranging from sultry R&B to rousing gospel accents, avant-garde jazz to mesmerizing roots reggae. An almost entirely self-produced effort recorded at Beres’ Harmony House studio in Kingston, A Moment in Time features 14 new selections, including the devotional “I’ll Live Again,” a percussive driven homage to the motherland “Talking Africa,” and several lovers rock tunes reflecting the vicissitudes of romantic relationships for which Beres sets the standard in contemporary (Jamaican) music. For the past 35 years, despite inevitable career trials and tribulations, the music of Hugh Beresford Hammond has yet to be wrong. Born in Jamaica’s garden parish St. Mary, on August 28, 1955, Beres, as a precocious child – the ninth of ten children – made regular trips to Kingston to mingle with the singers who frequented the downtown record shops. After graduating from high school, Beres entered several local talent shows including the Merritone Amateur Talent Contest, where several reggae stars including vocal trio The Mighty Diamonds, Sugar Minott and the late Jacob ‘Killer’ Miller also got their starts. He joined the fusion band Zap
Pow as lead singer in 1975 and remained with them for four years recording the albums Zap Pow (Mango, 1978), and Reggae Rules (Rhino Records, 1980) while simultaneously pursuing solo projects. But Beres quickly realized he “couldn’t serve two masters” and decided to concentrate on his individual efforts. Beres’ 1976 solo album Soul Reggae (Aquarius Records) produced by his friend Willie Lindo sold more than 2,000 copies in Jamaica during the first week of its release. His subsequent single “One Step Ahead,” still a favorite among Beres’ fans because of his signature impassioned vocals, held the number one spot on the Jamaican charts for three-and-a-half months. Despite the popularity of his music, Beres failed to reap any financial rewards. Frustrated, he dropped out of the music business, then regrouped and formed his own record label/production company, Harmony House, in the early ’80s. Beres’ Harmony House debut single “Groovy Little Thing” marked the first time he reaped financial rewards from his music. A succession of hit singles recorded for
various Jamaican producers followed, including 1987’s “What One Dance Can Do,” which entered the national charts in England and elicited a spate of answer records, including Beres’ own “She Loves Me Now.” Further acclaim arrived in 1990 when Beres joined forces with his good friend Donovan Germain, whose Penthouse Records dominated the Jamaican charts in the early 90s. Donovan asked Beres to record vocals over a rhythm track he had; Beres barely remembered recording “Tempted to Touch” but the song shot to the top of reggae charts around the world, as did the ensuing hits “Is This a Sign,” “Respect to You, Baby,” and “Feeling Lonely,” all featured on his Penthouse album A Love Affair. Beres maintained his presence on the reggae charts as the ’90s progressed so it was inevitable he would attract major label interest. He signed to Elektra Records for whom he released the outstanding CD In Control in 1994. The CD’s spectacular R&B flavored single “No Disturb Sign,” still one Beres’ most popular songs, did not yield the desired international breakthrough, however.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Undeterred, Beres continued to release music on his Harmony House label with distribution through VP Records. He has maintained his hit-making streak well into the 21st century while his incomparable, riveting live performances recruit legions of new fans from 9 to 90 years old.
ALPHA BLONDY Hailing from the Cote d’Ivoire, Alpha Blondy is among the world’s most popular reggae artists. With his 12-piece band Solar System, Blondy offers a reggae beat with a distinctive African cast. Calling himself an African Rasta, Blondy creates Jah-centered anthems promoting morality, love, peace, and social consciousness. With a range that moves from sensitivity to rage over injustice, much of Blondy’s music empathizes with the impoverished and those on society’s fringe. Blondy is also a staunch supporter of African unity, and to this end, he sings to Moslem audiences in Hebrew and sings in Arabic to Israelis. Some of his best-known songs include “Cocody Rock,” “Jerusalem,” and “Apartheid Is Nazism.” He was born a member of the Jula tribe in Dimbokoro and named Seydou Kone, after his grandfather. His grandmother, Cherie Coco, raised him. He was always a rebellious child and for this, Coco named him “Blondy,” her unique pronunciation of the word “bandit.” When he started performing professionally, he took on the name Alpha (the first letter in the Greek alphabet) so his name literally translates to “first bandit.” Though he grew up listening to African folkloric music such as yagba and gumbe, his primary musical influences were such Western bands as Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, †he Beatles, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and soul artists like Otis Redding. Later Bob Marley‘s music tremendously affected Blondy. Though he wanted to become a musician, his family
expected him to become a respectable English teacher. He studied English at Hunter College in New York, and later in the Columbia University American Language Program. Outside of class, he would play music in Central Park and in Harlem clubs, where occasionally house bands would let him sing his Bob Marley covers in French, English, and various West African languages. Blondy got his big break from friend Fulgence Kass, an employee of Ivory Coast Television who helped him land a spot on the Premiere Chance talent show. Singing three of his own tunes plus Burning Spear’s “Christopher Columbus,” the young artist was a hit with the audience. Blondy then hooked up with producer G. Benson, who recorded his eight-song debut album Jah Love in a single day. The most popular song, “Brigadier Sabari,” was an account of Blondy’s run-in with an Abidjan police street raid in which he was nearly beaten to death. It was the first time a West African artist had dared to mention random police brutality in public. After releasing the album, he and the newly formed Solar System band signed to EMI. They recorded his second album, Cocody Rock, in Paris in 1984. Later he returned to Tuff Gong to record his third album, Jerusalem (1986). By the release of his 1987 album Revolution, Blondy had established himself as an international artist. Three years before he had been voted the number one artist by a Radio France international poll. His popularity continues to grow, and he continues steadily releasing albums. His 1992 album, Masada, was released in over 50 countries around the world and went double gold in France. Yitzhak Rabin followed in 1998; Paris Percy appeared in spring 2001. Although it was recorded in 1999, the album Elohim appeared in 2002 in Europe and three years later in America. The career-spanning Akwaba: The Very Best of Alpha Blondy was released in 2005, then Jah Victory followed in 2007. The 2011 release Vision was issued by the Wagram label, while his 2013 effort Mystic Power launched his relationship with the VP imprint. The veteran reggae label issued his 2015 release Positive Energy, which featured guest appearances from Tarrus Riley and Ijahman Levi.
PROTOJE There is an exciting resurgence of conscious, organic music in Jamaica, and industry experts and observers agree that Protoje (Oje Ken Ollivierre ) is playing an important role in what is becoming known as the “Reggae Revival.” Leading the militant band The Indiggnation - this powerful songwriter and philosophical thinker articulates the righteous anger of an emerging generation. Protoje reports for duty, re-establishing the standard for the decaying art of socially responsible, mentally stimulating lyricism. After successfully releasing two albums, The Seven Year Itch and The 8 Year Affair, which spawned “Rasta Love” (featuring Ky-Mani Marley) and “Kingston Be Wise” (which was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto), Protoje released his third studio album, titled Ancient Future. The album reached number one on the iTunes Reggae Chart in its first week, and received great acclaim by many publications, including Mass Appeal’s top 25 Best Albums of 2015 and United Reggae’s 10 Best Reggae Albums of 2015. Protoje’s visibility has steadily increased, with articles being written in major publications ahead of and after his album release; a major achievement was being named on BBC 1xtra’s Hot for 2015 Artist list, promoting him across the BBC platform. Artists were selected because, as Mista Jams of the BBC stated, “they’re producing the quality music needed to become big in the next 12 months. It’s a real cross section of really exciting new talent all currently on their A game.” Protoje has been gaining momentum throughout the world, performing at quality venues to large audiences and touring with his band The Indiggnation, especially in Europe where several tours have already been booked as they continue to spread the music to the world. His fourth studio album, A Matter of Time, was scheduled to be released last month.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Our July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular explores the musical heritage of the United States to celebrate our country’s 242nd birthday. The groundbreaking all-girl hit-makers The Go-Go’s join conductor Thomas Wilkins and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a rousing set of their classic hits. John Williams (b. 1932) has to be one of the most prolific and popular composers of our time. He is the vastly influential and popular dean of American film composers, of course, but his works for the concert-hall also have met with acclaim from both critics and audience. Williams has also become one of America’s leading composers of music for important public occasions. Since the 1980s, he has written several works to mark anniversaries or other events, among them the spirited Liberty Fanfare (1986) for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. The self-taught scion of an important vaudeville family and a prolific songwriter (over 500), actor, and playwright, George M. Cohan (1878-1942) had a very successful Broadway career in the early 20th century. He has since become an American icon, known for patriotic songs such as “Over There.” From Little Johnny Jones (1904), in which Cohan starred, as well as writing the book, lyrics, and music, comes “Yankee Doodle Boy.” “Harrigan” is from Fifty Miles from Boston (1908), “Mary’s a Grand Old Name” is from Forty-Five Minutes from Broadway (which opened on Broadway, January 1, 1906), and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” is from George Washington, Jr. (which opened a month later, with Cohan starring). American composer/conductor Ralph Hermann (1914-1994) arranged these tunes in this sparkling salute to the master. American composer Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) was the grandmaster of the nebulously defined light classical music – “concert music with a pop quality” was how he described it. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Anderson studied piano and organ with his mother, and a broad range of music at Harvard. He directed the Harvard University Band from 1931 to 1935, and the following year he arranged a medley of Harvard songs for Arthur Fielder, the
conductor of the Boston Pops. Anderson continued writing for Fiedler and the Pops for many years, even during his military service (1942-46). A brilliant orchestrator, Anderson became famous for such works as The Syncopated Clock, Blue Tango, and Sleigh Ride. The brisk and bright Bugler’s Holiday was written in 1954 to display the trumpet section of his own orchestra. Robert Lowden (1920-1998) served in the U.S. Army Band during World War II and went on to compose and arrange for Claude Thornhill’s big band and for 101 Strings. His Armed Forces Salute gathers the songs and marches of the branches of the United States military, with allusions to other patriotic music in the transitions. The earliest version of the Army’s song was the “Caisson Song,” written by three lieutenants stationed in the Philippines in 1908. In 1917 John Philip Sousa was asked to adapt it as a march for the Field Artillery, and in that form it became a huge popular hit. “Semper Paratus” (Always Ready), the official song of the U.S. Coast Guard, was composed by Coast Guard Captain Francis S. Van Boskerck while stationed in Alaska in 1927. The tune now used for the “Marines Hymn” is based on the Gendarmes’ Duet from Jacques Offenbach’s operetta Geneviève de Brabant, which premiered in Paris in 1859. “The United States Air Force” was written by Captain Robert MacArthur Crawford as the “Army Air Corps Song” in 1939, and won a competition organized by the Air Corps, with a $1,000 prize from Liberty magazine. (In 1947 the words “United States Air Force” replaced “Army Air Corps” in the title.) “Anchors Aweigh” is the fight song of the U.S. Naval Academy, and was composed in 1906 by Lieutenant Charles A. Zimmerman, then bandmaster at the Academy.
arrangements — here of the powerful 1895 patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful” by Samuel Augustus Ward (1847-1903) — are still performed by orchestras and choirs around the world. John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was known the world over as a bandleader and the composer of dozens of marches, as well as of operettas, orchestral suites, and songs. The three marches on tonight’s program are American classics. The Washington Post was completed by Sousa in 1889, a commission for the Washington Post newspaper award ceremonies for promising journalists and essayists. Sousa penned Semper Fidelis in 1888. The march takes its title from the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps: Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful. In Sousa’s own words: “I wrote Semper Fidelis one night while in tears, after my comrades of the Marine Corps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico.” It became one of his most popular marches, and Sousa himself considered it his best. The Stars and Stripes Forever! was written in 1896 while Sousa was aboard ship from England to the United States. Notes compiled from Los Angeles Philharmonic archives.
Californian Carmen Dragon (1914-1984) was a highly successful composer, arranger, and conductor. Trained at San Jose State College, he worked as a nightclub pianist, and then as an arranger in Hollywood. He eventually scored more than 30 films, as well as television and stage shows. He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl many times in the 1950s and ’60s, recorded prolifically with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony, and served as music director of the Glendale Symphony for many years. THE GO-GO’S The Go-Go’s will forever have the beat! After breaking onto the Los Angeles music scene in 1978, the multi-platinum, all-female American rock band still rocks over three decades later. The Go-Go’s made history as the first – and to date, only – all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to ever top the Billboard charts. The Go-Go’s rose to fame during the early 1980s after the release of their 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat, which was No. 1 on the Billboard charts for six
consecutive weeks, one of the most successful debut albums of all time. The album, which went triple-platinum in the U.S., was also on Rolling Stone’s list of “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” and it featured their hit singles “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat.” The first single, “Our Lips Are Sealed,” has also been named one of the “Top 100 Pop Singles” by Rolling Stone. In 1982, The Go-Go’s were nominated for a Grammy Award. The Go-Go’s became the foundation of the early ’80s pop-rock sound and were a pop phenomenon, while having a lot of fun
and blazing a brand-new trail – for the DIY ethic in general, and women in music in particular. In 2011, thirty impressive years after their debut album Beauty and the Beat was released and dominated the charts, The Go-Go’s were honored with a star on the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band’s unofficial slogan? “Give the people what they want: some loud fast music and a great party!” Get social with The Go-Go’s at gogos.com, facebook.com/officialgogos, and twitter.com/officialgogos.

Upper chair of Orchestral Conducting established by the late Barbara and David Jacobs as a part of Indiana University’s “Matching the Promise Campaign.” Past positions have included resident conductor of the Detroit Symphony and Florida Orchestra (Tampa Bay), and associate conductor of the Richmond (VA) Symphony. He also has served on the music faculties of North Park University (Chicago), the University of
Tennessee in Chattanooga, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Devoted to promoting a life-long enthusiasm for music, Thomas Wilkins brings energy and commitment to audiences of all ages. He is hailed as a master at communicating and connecting with audiences. Following his highly successful first season with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Globe named him among the “Best People and Ideas of 2011.” In 2014, Wilkins received the prestigious “Outstanding Artist” award at the Nebraska Governor’s Arts Awards, for his significant contribution to music in the state. And in March of 2018, the Longy School of Music awarded Thomas Wilkins the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society. During his conducting career, he has led orchestras throughout the U.S., including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra (both of which he returned to guest conduct in the 2016/17
season), the New York Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Utah Symphony, at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago (where he returned in the summer of 2017), and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., to name a few. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Thomas Wilkins is a graduate of the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He and his wife, Sheri-Lee, are the proud parents of twin daughters, Erica and Nicole. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
PATRICK DOYLE is a classically trained composer. He graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in 1975 and was made a Fellow of the RSAM in 2001. In 1989 director Sir Kenneth Branagh commissioned Patrick to compose the score for feature film Henry V, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, and they have subsequently collaborated on numerous pictures, including Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet, As You Like It, and Cinderella. Patrick and Branagh’s collaboration in film and theater has continued to this day, with performances worldwide that include Branagh’s 2015 production of The Winter’s Tale which ran at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End. Patrick has been commissioned to score over 50 international feature films, including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Gosford Park, Sense and Sensibility, Indochine, Carlito’s Way, and A Little Princess. His work has led to collaborations with some of the most acclaimed directors in the world, such as Regis Wargnier, Brian De Palma, Alfonso Cuarón, Ang Lee, Chen Kaige, Mike Newell, and Robert Altman. Patrick has received two Oscar, two Golden Globe, one BAFTA and two Cesar nominations, as well as winning the 1989 Ivor Novello Award for Best Film Theme for Henry V. He has also been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from The World Soundtrack Awards and Scottish BAFTA, the Henry Mancini Award from ASCAP, and the PRS Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Music. In 2015, Patrick completed work on the music for Walt Disney’s live action version of Cinderella, directed by Branagh and marking their eleventh film collaboration to date. Patrick also recorded a solo piano album, made up of a collection of his film scores to date, which was released by Varese Sarabande in July 2015. Recent films include the remake of Scottish classic Whisky Galore and Amma Asante’s A United Kingdom.
American composer/conductor JUSTIN FREER was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California. He has established himself as one of West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and has quickly become a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, but quickly turned to piano and composition, composing his first work at eleven and giving his professional conducting debut at sixteen. Continually composing for a variety of mediums, he has written music for worldrenowned trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Jens Lindemann and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music around the world. He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns, including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor, Freer has appeared with some of the bestknown orchestras in the world, including the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, and San Francisco Symphony. In upcoming seasons, he will guest conduct the Minnesota Orchestra as well as the orchestras of Dublin, Paris, Philadelphia, Sydney, and Toronto, to name a few. Renowned wind conductor and Oxford Round Table Scholar Dr. Rikard Hansen has noted that, “In totality, Freer’s exploration in musical sound evokes moments of highly charged drama, alarming strife, and serene reflection.” Freer has been recognized with numerous grants and awards from organizations including ASCAP, BMI, the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and the Henry Mancini Estate. He is the Founder and President of CineConcerts, a company dedicated to the preservation and concert presentation of film, curating and conducting full-length music score performances live with film for such diverse titles as Gladiator, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s A Wonderful Life, and, most recently, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Freer earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music Composition from UCLA, where his principal composition teachers included Paul Chihara and Ian Krouse. In addition, he was mentored by legendary composer/conductor Jerry Goldsmith.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Among the large-scale works that occupied Duke Ellington (1899-1974) – amid constant touring – in the later years of his life were various suites, film scores, the three oratorio-like “sacred concerts,” and a ballet, The River. Commissioned in 1970 by American Ballet Theatre for choreographer Alvin Ailey, The River “was to be all water music, and it was to follow the course of this stream through various stages: through a meander, falls, a whirlpool, and then gurgling rapids. I fell in love with the idea,” as Ailey said in a 1983 interview. “Once [Ellington] decided that he was going to write this river piece as a ballet, he had all the world’s water music on recordings. He had the scores and everything. He had Handel’s Water Music; he had Debussy’s La Mer; he had Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes. He said, ‘I’ve been listening to this to see what other people have done with water music.’” The premiere took place as scheduled, at Lincoln Center’s New York State Theater, but as “Seven Dances from a Work in Progress Entitled The River.” Ellington had created 12 movements (his sketch recordings with his band have been released commercially), but Ailey choreographed only seven, to orchestral arrangements by Canadian composer Ron Collier (19302003), who collaborated with Ellington on several projects. Ellington himself wrote detailed descriptions of the events and scenes of the river on its course from burbling spring to the sea. He is quite clearly taken with water imagery in all its forms, but he also sees the course of water as a spiritual metaphor. When it reaches the sea, he writes, “the river is no longer a river. It has passed its point of disembarkation and here we realize the validity of the foundation of religion which is the HEAVENLY ANTICIPATION OF REBIRTH.” The first batch of lyrics for the musical On the Town, for all their effervescent glamorizing of New York City life, were actually penned from a hospital room shared by Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) and lyricist Adolph Green. The two were both due for minor surgery in June 1944, but, eager to start work on the new show, they decided to go in at the same time and work on the musical while recovering. Very little of the show was created during that stay, but work on the musical
progressed rapidly. By December 1944, Bernstein, Green, and lyricist Betty Comden had finished writing and were planning a premiere later that month. It was the second appearance that year of a Bernstein stage production; the first was his ballet Fancy Free. Yet Bernstein insisted that “there was not a note of Fancy Free music in On the Town” and that the similarities were merely variations on a theme that resounded particularly well with audiences immersed in the end of World War II. Still, the resemblance runs deep. Both shows followed the exploits of sailors on shore leave in New York City. More noticeably, both productions profess a boisterous love for New York in the ’40s. Bernstein saves what is probably the best-known theme of the show, “New York, New York” for the final sketch, “Times Square: 1944.” Rough, rugged, and harmonically dense, the music shapes the famous theme in canon, interrupted repetitions, and an assortment of voicings. The result is a cityscape that conveys the sailors’ (and Bernstein’s) youthful enthusiasm and affection for the New York of yesteryear.
indigenous music with the more rigorous elements of European art music. In a career extending over more than half a century, Ginastera would eventually leave behind the folk idiom and write in more contemporary styles, even adopting the twelve-tone system in his later scores. Ginastera’s Estancia, written in 1941 on a commission from American Ballet Caravan, was intended as a “ballet in one act and five scenes based on Argentine country life,” and originally including spoken and sung elements. Because of problems on the part of Ballet Caravan, the ballet itself went unperformed until 1952, but a suite of four dances from the score was introduced at the venerable Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 1943. The furious final Malambo takes its title from a dance that has long figured in a competition among gauchos (Argentine cowboys). Notes compiled from Los Angeles Philharmonic archives.
John Williams (b. 1932) had scored over two dozen films before he met director Steven Spielberg on a 1974 film called The Sugarland Express. But it was that relationship, as well as Spielberg’s subsequent introduction of the composer to director George Lucas, that sent Williams’ composing career into the Hollywood stratosphere. After a decade of movies in which pop songs dominated movie soundtracks, it was Williams’ lavish musical treatment for Star Wars (1977) that almost single-handedly restored the symphonic tradition in Hollywood film music. Spielberg and Lucas then joined forces on Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first of four films starring Harrison Ford as archeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones. Amid the stirring marches and action dazzle, “Marion’s Theme” is the strong-willed romantic expression of Indy’s original girlfriend, Marion Raven (Karen Allen). Among the leading lights of 20th-century concert music in South America, Argentina’s Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) is acknowledged for his successful blending of

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
JENNIFER HUDSON A two-time Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Academy Award-winning actress, and best-selling author, Jennifer Hudson is an extraordinary talent. From humble beginnings, Hudson began singing in a small Chicago church where, week after week, she brought the congregation to its feet. From there, she’s gone on to worldwide acclaim. Hudson can be seen this fall as a returning coach on the 15th season of NBC’s The Voice alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Kelly Clarkson. Earlier this year, she returned for season 7 of ITV’s The Voice UK with fellow coaches Tom Jones, will.i.am, and Olly Murs. This year she also stars alongside Jeffrey Wright, Jennifer Ehle, Nas, and A$AP Rocky in Monster, based on Walter Dean Myers’s award-winning novel of the same title. The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. In 2017, Hudson completed season 13 of NBC’s The Voice with fellow coaches Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus, and Blake Shelton, as well as season 6 of The Voice UK alongside fellow coaches will.i.am, Tom Jones, and Gavin Rossdale. In 2016, Jennifer appeared in NBC’s Emmy-nominated production of Hairspray LIVE!, where she wowed audiences as powerhouse Motormouth Maybelle alongside co-stars Harvey Fierstein, Ariana Grande, and Kristin Chenoweth. The same year, she was honored with a Grace Kelly Award by the March of Dimes. Additionally, Hudson was a featured voice in Universal’s animated hit Sing and portrayed Angela Wright in HBO’s 2016 Emmy-nominated television film Confirmation. In 2015, she appeared in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq, for which she received a 2016 NAACP Image Award nomination. Hudson made her Broadway debut as Shug Avery in 2015 in the Tony-awardwinning production of John Doyle’s re-imagination of The Color Purple. The show, produced by Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, earned rave reviews and a Grammy win for Hudson. She was also nominated for a Drama League Award in the Distinguished Performance category. In September of 2014, Hudson released her third critically acclaimed album, JHUD, which opened in the Billboard Top 10. The album, released by Sony/RCA, features hit tracks like Grammy-nominated “It’s Your World,” “He Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” “Walk It Out,” and “I Still Love You.”
2013 was an equally exciting a year for Hudson, most notably, when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was privileged to have the honor of performing at the Presidential Inauguration, Super Bowl XLVII, and the Academy Awards. In addition, Hudson was honored by the Recording Academy at the Annual Grammys on the Hill for her philanthropic efforts, specifically with her organization, the Julian D. King Gift Foundation. The same year, Hudson was honored at VH1’s Do Something Awards for her charitable work and at Variety’s Power of Women luncheon with the Samsung Galaxy Impact Award. Hudson’s sophomore album, I Remember Me, debuted in March 2011 at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 and R&B Albums charts and has since been certified RIAA Gold in the U.S. She went on to receive a 2012 Billboard Music Award nomination for Top R&B Album as well as taking home two 2012 NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Music Video and Outstanding Album. Additional recent collaborations include Think Like a Man with Ne-Yo and Rick Ross for the title track of the film and critically acclaimed single “Night of Your Life” with David Guetta for his most recent hit album Nothing But the Beat. Hudson’s 2008 self-titled debut won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, which was presented by one of Hudson’s idols, Whitney Houston. She received three additional nominations including Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and Best R&B Song. The album
then went on to win three awards at the 2009 NAACP Image Awards, including Best Album. The RIAA Platinum-certified album entered Billboard’s Top 200 at No. 2, marking the biggest first week sales for an R&B female entry since 2004, and has since sold over 1.1 million albums worldwide. In 2007, Hudson won an Academy Award for her role as Effie in the smash hit Dreamgirls, a film adaptation of the Broadway musical. Her breakout onscreen performance also garnered a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BAFTA and an NAACP Image Award. Additional honors include recognition by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the National Board of Review, and being named Entertainer of the Year at the Soul Train Awards. Additional film and television credits include The Secret Life of Bees, Sex and the City: The Movie, Lullaby, Black Nativity, Winnie Mandela, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, The Three Stooges, Call Me Crazy: A Five Film, Smash, and Empire. Expanding her triumphs in the arts, Hudson added ‘author’ to her list of accomplishments in January 2012 with the release of her New York Times best-selling memoir, I Got This: How I Changed My Ways, Found Myself and Lost Everything that Weighed Me Down. In 2009, Jennifer, along with her sister Julia, founded the Julian D. King Gift Foundation, as a catalyst for change in children’s health, education and welfare.
