WELCOME
TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL
The start of the Bowl season marks the official beginning of summer for generations of music lovers across Los Angeles. This year, we celebrate the LA Phil’s 93rd season and Gustavo Dudamel’s fifth as Music Director at the Bowl. The Hollywood Bowl holds special meaning for Dudamel, who made his U.S. debut at the venue at the tender age of 24 and marked his arrival as Music Director with ¡Bienvenido Gustavo!, a historic, day-long community concert. This summer, Dudamel returns with a show-stopping, all-Beethoven program; two beloved Italian operas - Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci; and the third installment of Americas & Americans, celebrating the shared musical traditions of North and South America. We will also be joined by old friends and Bowl favorites Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Yuja Wang, Hilary Hahn, Gil Shaham, and Yefim Bronfman. Making a rare summertime appearance, Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen returns to lead the LA Phil in Shostakovich’s and Prokofiev’s first symphonies. Joining a roster of classical music’s finest performers are critically acclaimed artists from the worlds of jazz, world music, Broadway, and pop. We are also thrilled to welcome back Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Thomas Wilkins, as well as legendary musician Herbie Hancock in his fifth season as Creative Chair for Jazz. Only at the Hollywood Bowl is there truly something for everyone – The Beatles’ 50th at the Bowl, an all-star production of Hair, Swedish pop princess Robyn with electronic duo Röyksopp, a James Brown celebration led by Christian McBride, and an unforgettable Fireworks Finale in honor of The Simpsons’ 25th Anniversary. The list of concerts not to be missed goes on and on. There is a particular brand of alchemy at work at the Hollywood Bowl. Warm summer nights, the natural beauty of the setting, a rich history of musical performance stretching back nearly a century – these qualities combine to make the Bowl a truly magical place. Thank you for joining us this evening; we hope you will enjoy many more music-filled evenings with family and friends.
It’s time for our annual return to this extraordinary place, without which it just wouldn’t feel like summer in L.A. As always, the winter has been spent in work to enhance your Bowl experience. We have new benches! For the first time since 1981 (and before that 1958), all of the benches in the theater have been replaced with beautiful new wood. The new wood, yellow Alaskan cedar like the old, is unfinished and unpainted, and will soon weather to the beautiful gray color you know and love. We’ve also undertaken a landscape lighting installation that is unmistakable when the sun goes down. The effect begins at the entrance on Highland Avenue and continues up Peppertree Lane, through the Box Office Plaza, and into the theater, where the already spectacular atmosphere is enhanced by the lighting of trees around the perimeter. Thank you to MATT Construction, our contractor for these projects, and Rios Clementi Hale Studios for their overall design of the lighting project. The new benches and lighting, together valued at nearly $3 million, were made possible by Proposition A parks funds and county funds, made available by Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. As this is his last summer in the Supervisor’s office we offer Supervisor Yaroslavsky, more than ever, special recognition and sincere thanks for his tremendous support. During his time in office, so much has been achieved to enhance and secure the future of the Hollywood Bowl for the next generations of Angelenos. We are proud to establish a permanent recognition of his dedication with the new Zev Yaroslavsky Main Gate, which creates a beautiful sense of arrival for our visitors. We also extend our gratitude to all members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, County CEO Bill Fujioka, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. We acknowledge our corporate, foundation, and media partners who provide a broad range of support and help make possible everything you see and hear on the Bowl stage throughout the summer. Most of all we thank all of you, our devoted patrons, for your passionate support of music at the Bowl. Welcome back and enjoy the show!

WELCOME
TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL
A MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISOR ZEV YAROSLAVSKY Once more, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to our wonderful Hollywood Bowl and the Summer 2014 concert season. “Once more.” That phrase holds bittersweet meaning for me this year, because this is, literally, my farewell opportunity to extend official greetings as your County Supervisor for the Third District. Under the County’s voter-approved term limits, I will conclude my 20 years in County office this December. Over that time, I can honestly say that our work with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and our Parks and Recreation Department to improve and enhance your Hollywood Bowl experience has been among my proudest and most rewarding accomplishments. More than a cherished outdoor local concert facility, the Hollywood Bowl for decades has been an internationally renowned and truly iconic performance venue, celebrated for its unique design, its extraordinary acoustics, and the enchanting qualities of presenting music under the starry California skies on balmy summer evenings. I’ve spoken often of the fond childhood memories I have of visiting the Bowl with my parents. Sharing the privilege of Hollywood Bowl stewardship for these past two decades will be one of my fondest memories of my service as your County Supervisor. Thank you for your support, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity of representing your Hollywood Bowl. Please enjoy the show! Zev Yaroslavsky Supervisor, Third District County of Los Angeles

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL
Dynamic conductor GUSTAVO DUDAMEL’s passionate music making invigorates audiences of all ages worldwide. He is concurrently serving as Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the impact of his musical leadership is felt on four continents. While his commitment to his music director posts in the United States and Venezuela accounts for the major portion of his yearly schedule, Dudamel also guest conducts with some of the world’s greatest musical institutions each season, such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and La Scala in both opera and concert. Dudamel is continuing his fifth season as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where his contract has already been extended until 2018/19, the orchestra’s 100th season. Under his leadership the Los Angeles Philharmonic has extended its reach to an unprecedented extent via LA Phil LIVE to audiences throughout North America, Europe, and South America, and through Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA), which was widely influenced by Venezuela’s successful El Sistema.
18
MUSIC DIRECTOR
It is not only the breadth of the audience reached, but also the depth of the programming performed under Gustavo Dudamel that are remarkable. Programs at the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2013/14 continue to represent the best and the boldest: eleven world premieres and thirteen commissions; a Hollywood Bowl Aida and Verdi Requiem; a community-wide season-opening festival in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Walt Disney Concert Hall, culminating in a gala performance at the Hall; and a sevencity North American tour in March 2014. The season concluded with a staged Così fan tutte with sets by architect Zaha Hadid, completing a three-consecutive-year Mozart/Da Ponte trilogy project. Now in his 15th season as Music Director, Dudamel continues to lead the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra in his native Venezuela as well as on tour. Starting with a production of Tannhäuser at the Bogotá Opera in July 2013, followed by a 2013 summer residency at the Salzburg Festival, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra then toured to Paris and the Middle East in January of 2014, before travelling to California in February
for a residency and joint concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for the LA Phil’s TchaikovskyFest. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist since 2005, Gustavo Dudamel has numerous recordings on the label, including a 2012 Grammy-winning Brahms Symphony No. 4 and a recent Mahler 9, both with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. A CD of Adams’ Gospel According to the Other Mary with the Los Angeles Philharmonic was released in March 2014. In the area of video/DVD, many releases capture the excitement of important concerts in Dudamel’s musical life. Gustavo Dudamel, one of the most decorated conductors of his generation, was named Musical America’s 2013 Musician of the Year. He was born in 1981 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and his early musical and mentoring experiences molded his commitment to music as an engine for social change – a lifelong passion. In 2012, Gustavo and Eloísa Dudamel launched The Dudamel Foundation, which is dedicated to furthering music education and social justice around the world. Visit gustavodudamel.com.

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC
The LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC, under the vibrant leadership of Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, is re-inventing the concept of the 21st-century orchestra. Both at home and abroad, the Philharmonic – recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras – is leading the way in innovative programming, which is received enthusiastically by audiences and critics alike. 2013/14 marks the orchestra’s 95th season. More than 250 concerts are either performed or presented by the Philharmonic at its two iconic venues: Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. These presentations represent a breadth and depth unrivaled by other orchestras or cultural institutions. In October 2013 the Philharmonic celebrated the 10th anniversary of its winter home – the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Praise for both the design and the acoustics of the Hall has been effusive, and the building embodies the energy, imagination, and creative spirit of the city of Los Angeles and its orchestra. As Time magazine noted, “With its curvaceous exterior and acoustically adroit interior, Gehry’s building bestowed on the city an important architectural landmark and proved that L.A. residents actually do go to the symphony,” while The Washington Post stated, “At last this orchestra has a hall worthy of its stature.” During its 30-week winter subscription season of more than 100 performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Philharmonic creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the symphonic music experience and delve further into certain artists’ or composers’ work. In 2011/12, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, completed a monumental endeavor by performing Mahler’s nine symphonies over the course of just three weeks in Los Angeles and one week in Caracas. Highlights of the 2012/13 season included: Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, the second installment of the three-year Mozart opera project (which concluded this season with Così fan tutte); an international tour of Creative Chair John Adams’ oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary; and Oliver Knussen’s one-act opera Where the Wild Things Are. The LA Phil’s commitment to the music of our time is also evident in its subscription concerts, the exhilarating Green Umbrella series, and its extensive commissioning initiatives.
20
The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles also extends far beyond symphony concerts in a concert hall, with performances in schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its wide-ranging education initiatives is Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA). Central to YOLA is the Philharmonic’s plan to build, with community partners, youth orchestras in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles. In 2012, the LA Phil launched Take a Stand, a partnership with the Longy School of Music at Bard College which supports social change through music by providing leaders with tools for growth through a series of conferences and workshops, and provides progressive and rigorous training for performing and teaching musicians. Always inspired to expand its cultural offerings, the LA Phil each season produces concerts featuring distinguished artists in recital, jazz, world music, songbook, and visiting orchestra performances, in addition to special holiday concerts and series of chamber music, organ recitals, and Baroque music. The Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to broaden its audience by touring worldwide, offering an extensive catalog of recorded music, and broadcasting concerts on radio and television. Thirteen concerts from the 2013/14 season have been broadcast in partnership with Classical KUSC and the WFMT Radio Network. The 2012/13 series was broadcast in 305 markets and reached over 3.7 million listeners. Through an ongoing partnership with Deutsche Grammophon, the orchestra also has a substantial catalog of concerts available online, including the first full-length classical music video released on iTunes. Rhapsody in Blue: Opening Night Concert and Gala was telecast as part of the PBS performing arts series Great Performances and garnered a 2012 Emmy nomination. In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel won a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of the Brahms Symphony No. 4. In 1974, the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin Mehta won an Academy Award for “The Bolero,” a 30-minute short subject featuring Maurice Ravel’s famous orchestral work. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a millionaire and amateur musician, who established the city’s first permanent symphony orchestra in 1919. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, ten renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodzinski (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

AMERICAS & AMERICANS
Gustavo Dudamel This summer, Americas & Americans returns to the Bowl. A signature festival of Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, its initial incarnation at Walt Disney Concert in 2010 capped Dudamel’s first season as the orchestra’s new Music Director, bringing together music and musicians from across the Americas and exploring our unique mix of cultures, religions, and landscapes. “This is our music,” Dudamel said. “It is the language which links us as a people – borders dissolve, colors emerge and mix, and we find those voices which unite North, Central, and South America as one.” “Gustavo’s own profound attachment to his Latin American roots resonates so meaningfully with the Hispanic heritage of Los Angeles,” said Los Angeles Philharmonic President Deborah Borda. “This is an essential part of the LA Phil’s own cultural geography.” Then in 2012 Dudamel brought the concept to the Hollywood Bowl for an intense, celebratory week. Singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra joined Dudamel and the LA Phil, as did Venezuelan pianist Sergio Tiempo, playing Alberto Ginastera’s multifaceted Piano Concerto No. 1. Rubén Blades and Eddie Palmieri shared a jazz bill, Colombian star Juanes performed with Thomas Wilkins and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra (plus the YOLA at EXPO Chamber Orchestra), and Plácido Domingo joined Dudamel and the LA Phil in concert for the first time. For this second summer installment, Americas & Americans covers four programs over two weeks on most of the Bowl series: salsa and Latin jazz on Jazz at the Bowl, Gloria

Estefan and fireworks with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for Weekend Spectaculars, and Tuesday and Thursday programs with Dudamel and the LA Phil. Two titans of salsa and Latin jazz launch the festival (July 23). Puerto Rican singer and

bandleader Gilberto Santa Rosa, “El Caballero de la Salsa,” makes his Hollywood Bowl debut. The always dynamic singer and multi-instrumentalist Sheila E. completes this fantastic pairing. A member of the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame, international superstar Gloria Estefan hardly needs introduction. She brings songs from her Grammy-nominated CD The Standards, as well as her iconic hits, and Thomas Wilkins leads the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra on this program that also features some of the Bowl’s dazzling fireworks (July 25 & 26). Panamanian icon-singer-lawyer-actorpolitician Rubén Blades returns to the Bowl and the festival, this time with Dudamel and the LA Phil. Blades’ infectious salsa and thinking person’s lyrics have led to his being called the “Latin Bruce Springsteen,”

and Dudamel, with his great energy and love for salsa, will deliver the perfect orchestral context for Blades. The climax of Americas & Americans this summer is “Noche de Cine,” an engrossing exploration of film music across the Americas, with clips shown on the Bowl’s big screen. The evening features L.A.’s first listen to Dudamel’s work as a composer. “I wrote the music for a film called Libertador,” Dudmael said for a interview/photo spread in New York magazine. “It’s a film about Simón Bolívar. He’s like the George Washington of Venezuela. We are doing a suite of music from the film and Bill Ross, a composer, is helping me cut from 90 minutes to 15.” Libertador was directed by Alberto Arvelo and stars Edgar Ramírez as Bolívar. Arvelo, who has also collaborated with Dudamel in opera and directed the 2010 documentary Dudamel: Let the Children Play, staged Antonio Estévez’ Cantata Criolla for the first Americas

Members of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, which Dudamel also leads, recorded the score. “I tried to not take away too much from the images,” Dudamel told the Los Angeles Times. “It was a fantastic experience, but I’m not sure I would do it again.” Joining Dudamel and the LA Phil for “Noche de Cine” as a special guest is Gustavo Santaolalla, the Argentine composer/producer/ multi-instrumentalist. MOVING MUSIC FORWARD LA PHIL 2014/15 SEASON ANNOUNCED In February, Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Diretor Gustavo Dudamel and President and CEO Deborah Borda announced the 2014/15 season in Walt Disney Concert Hall. This new season, the orchestra’s 96th, is devoted to moving music forward by presenting an everevolving vision through a series of programs that demonstrate the artistry of the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a leading orchestra of the 21st century, under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel. Subscriptions are still available, and Create Your Own packages (five or more concerts chosen from the full range of series and non-subscription programs) are also on sale. “The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2014/15 season offers a diverse range of programs designed to reflect the depth of the orchestra’s artistry and the breadth of its innovations on stage and in the community,” said Borda. “Audiences are changing and we embrace that change. In keeping with the vision of the LA Phil as a 21st-century orchestra, we are addressing that evolution with new programmatic ideas that keep moving music forward. This investment in the future of concertgoing is expressed through the energy of our presentations to create more interactive content, reflecting the priorities of Los Angeles as a creative center. We are guided as ever, by the head of the LA Phil family, Music Director Gustavo Dudamel – a vital and socially conscious artist who has provided us with yet another exceptional season of concerts.” “The new season holds so many treasures for me,” said Dudamel, “most particularly the collaborations with such a diverse array of artists and composers. Many old friends are returning, and many new ones are arriving, particularly within the Contemporary Americans festival. My love of Spanish music will be shared in a program of music by Falla and Rodrigo, which I will conduct in Walt Disney Concert Hall for the first time. I am excited to bring back City Noir from our great family member John Adams – it has a very special meaning for me, as it was part of my inaugural Los Angeles Philharmonic performances as Music Director. What makes the Los Angeles Philharmonic so different and distinctive is the great repertoire that we perform from across the centuries, combining the old with

the new. This season, I will be conducting six new commissions, five of which will be world premieres; together we are creating a rich musical heritage for the future. The sense of the adventure is what makes the Los Angeles Philharmonic so unique and special to me.” The 2014/15 season includes bold new initiatives that experiment with the boundaries of orchestral presentation coupled with the LA Phil’s signature programs. Inside the Music with Brian Lauritzen and in/SIGHT are new series platforms, both featuring Gustavo Dudamel and designed to provide multiple entry points into the concert experience through video installations, pre- and post-concert discussions, unique video content delivered before each performance, and an online forum. Created to respond to an evolving audience, these Friday night series will offer greater context to Philharmonic listeners. NEXT ON GRAND: Contemporary Americans will inaugurate a recurring festival focused on a single creative force or cultural element and led by Gustavo Dudamel. The festival represents an ambitious collaboration between the
LA Phil and venues along Grand Avenue and, in its first year, will focus on the work of American composers. The festival will include six LA Phil world premiere commissions (three conducted by Gustavo Dudamel), plus vocal, chamber, and orchestral music, as well as video installations and performances by the Labèques, Roomful of Teeth, Ensemble Signal, and the Calder Quartet among others. In a first for the LA Phil, prominent Chinese guest artists will join the orchestra to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a program inviting this large and vital community into the Hall. The LA Phil’s dedication to contemporary composers and cutting-edge collaborations forms a major pillar of this new season, with over half of the concerts featuring works from living composers, with ten new commissions (including works from Philip Glass, Steven Mackey, and Kaija Saariaho); eight world premieres; five U.S. premieres; and seven West Coast premieres. The 10th birthday of the Walt Disney Concert Hall organ will be celebrated with the world premiere of Stephen Hartke’s “Organ” Symphony.

Multi-disciplinary projects will be featured extensively throughout the season – Esa-Pekka Salonen will collaborate with artist Refik Anadol to incorporate a newly commissioned video into a unique production of Berlioz’ Romeo and Juliet. The 70th birthday celebration for Michael Tilson Thomas includes a new staged production of Beethoven’s sublime Missa Solemnis that includes video by Finn Ross. The fully-staged opera Alice in Wonderland by Unsuk Chin will receive its West Coast premiere. Directed by Netia Jones, the production will feature her unique use of video projection as demonstrated in the 2013/14 season opening night gala. In celebration of the Music Center’s 50th anniversary, Gustavo Dudamel will lead a performance of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Helix from Walt Disney Concert Hall, with, for the very first time, the music being relayed live to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, where it will accompany a world premiere presentation from LA Dance Project. In the spring of 2015, Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic will embark on their first tour to Asia together. The tour program will include City Noir, which was commissioned by the LA Phil from Creative Chair John Adams for Gustavo Dudamel’s inaugural gala in October 2009. The 2009 performance was telecast internationally, reaching audiences in the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia. The piece was then taken on Dudamel’s first U.S. tour in 2010. This tour will visit Hong Kong, Seoul, Beijing, and Tokyo. The season begins September 30 with the annual Opening Night Gala, this time a John Williams celebration featuring violinist Itzhak Perlman, who returns in January for a Coburn Celebrity Recital. Other superstars appearing with the LA Phil or on its presentations programs during the season include pianists Martha Argerich, Emanuel Ax, Yefim Bronfman, Chick Corea, Hélène Grimaud, Herbie Hancock, Lang Lang, András Schiff, and Yuja Wang; violinists Joshua Bell, Leila Josefowicz, and Gidon Kremer; organist Cameron Carpenter; singers Susan Graham and Audra McDonald; and popular artists such as Kodo, Esperanza Spalding, and Arlo Guthrie. THE BEATLES AT THE BOWL
By Carol Merrill-Mirsky
August 23, 1964: a red-letter day in the history of the Hollywood Bowl The Beatles had just made their U.S. debut in February of 1964. When tickets went on sale in April for their Hollywood Bowl show in August, it sold out in 3-1/2 hours. No online sales, no phone sales. If you wanted a ticket, you had to find out where they were being sold, and line up. The main location was the Hollywood Bowl box office. Hundreds of kids camped out overnight on Highland Avenue and the next day the line went from the Bowl entrance nearly to Hollywood Boulevard. The “British invasion” startled America in the early sixties, creating a gigantic generation gap in popular music. Many adults were critical, disdainful even, but a core audience of young teenage girls went completely crazy for The Beatles. Game-show host Bob Eubanks, then a DJ at local radio station KRLA, set out to book an appearance in L.A. Where else but the biggest, most exciting, most famous venue L.A. had to offer? Negotiating the concert – and producing it – was a huge challenge. He had to put up a financial guarantee for renting the Bowl, paying The Beatles, and covering all the expenses. He ended up mortgaging his house to finance the concert. The concert itself was chaotic. The screaming of the crowd was so loud, no one could
38
hear the music. Fortunately, the concert (as well as the two Beatles concerts in August of 1965) was recorded and later released under the guiding hand of Beatles record producer George Martin. The Getaway: fans, decoy limos, and an armored truck Beatles fans were fanatic. The producers and the Bowl management knew that the fans would try to get close to The Beatles any way they could. Bob Eubanks tells about a scheme he cooked up to get The Beatles safely away after the concert in 1964. He hired a limo as a decoy and had it parked just outside the stage door. In reality, he had a Plymouth Valiant (a nondescript car) ready and waiting so when The Beatles came off stage, they jumped in the Valiant and were off before the fans even got down to the stage area. The fans went a little crazy when they found out there was no one in the limo and The Beatles had already gone. The Beatles returned for two shows in 1965: August 29 and 30. After the previous year’s pandemonium, the Bowl’s management tried to avoid a panic situation by hiring a Brinks armored truck to bring The Beatles to and from their hotel. The Beatles weren’t the first rock & rollers to appear at the Bowl. That distinction goes
to Duane Eddy, the Coasters, Jan and Dean, the Beach Boys, and other great acts, but The Beatles were the first rockers to truly headline at the Bowl. With the Righteous Brothers and Jackie DeShannon as opening acts, and 18,700 screaming girls (and a few boys and some parents) in the audience, The Beatles’ 1964 concert became the benchmark for rock & roll at the Bowl.
The Beatles at the Bowl exhibit is on the second floor of the Hollywood Bowl Museum. The Museum is located on Peppertree Lane between the Box Office and Highland Avenue. The Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday 10am – 8pm and Sunday 4:30 – 7:30pm. For more information, please visit hollywoodbowl.com/museum or call 323.850.2058.

FROM THE LA PHIL
David Weiss In Memoriam During the winter season, the extended LA Phil and Hollywood Bowl families lost three longtime members. Bill Wilson, Technical Director and Property Master, died in December, Donald Muggeridge, second oboe for the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 44 years, passed away in May, and David Weiss, Principal Oboe for 30 years, died later that month. DAVID WEISS first played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1962, at the age of 15, and he was Principal Oboe of the orchestra from 1973 until his retirement in 2003. Before joining the LA Phil as Principal, Weiss had held first chair positions with the Metropolitan Opera National Company, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the National Symphony, and the West Point Military Academy Band. He was a frequent soloist with the orchestra, and in addition to the symphonic recording he did, Weiss could be heard on the soundtracks for nearly 200 films. He began his musical training with his mother at the age of three, and later performed for many years in a family ensemble with his sister (flutist Dawn Weiss), his brother (bassoonist Abe Weiss), and his wife (pianist Alpha Hockett Walker). David Weiss was also a master of the musical saw, with appearances on The Tonight Show and A Prairie Home Companion, as well as at the Hollywood Bowl and in films and television commercials. In addition, Weiss was an accomplished photographer whose work was exhibited and published internationally; he documented many of the Philharmonic’s activities during his tenure. Weiss was a faculty member at the USC Thornton School of Music, Cal-State University Long Beach, and the Music Academy of the West. He previously taught at Vassar College and Duquesne University, and was a frequent conference clinician and competition judge, and gave master classes

Donald Muggeridge at the New England Conservatory and the Manhattan School of Music. DONALD MUGGERIDGE joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1955, majored in English at UCLA, and studied with Bert Gassman, then Principal Oboe of the Philharmonic. The recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship for study in the Netherlands with Haakon Stotijn in 1958, Muggeridge also played English horn with the Philharmonic. He participated as a member of the Columbia Symphony in many recordings conducted by Igor Stravinsky and Bruno Walter, in addition to teaching and doing musical work in the motion picture industry. Muggeridge retired from the LA Phil at the end of the Hollywood Bowl season in 1999. Among the memories he shared at that time was one of musical greetings for Eduard van Beinum (LA Phil Music Director 1958-1959). “A group of us would play for him at the airport when he returned from a trip,” Muggeridge recalled. “To me, he was manna from heaven – and our playing, as a result, freed up.” His other musical activities have included performing and teaching at the Aspen Music Festival. Muggeridge was a founding member of the Philharmonic Wind Quintet of Los Angeles, and he recorded a transcription of the Ricercar from Bach’s Musical Offering with colleagues (Crystal). A resident of Palos Verdes, his hobbies were cooking, gardening, reading, tennis, and real estate. Most recently he served as a trustee of Musicians Union Local 47. WILLIAM “BILL” WILSON JR. joined the Hollywood Bowl production staff in 1965, when he was 22 years old. He became Master of Properties in the stage crew, and also served as Technical Director and Union Steward for IATSE Local 33 before his retirement after the 2007 season, when he was succeeded as Property Master by his brother, Alvin Wilson.
William Wilson Jr. Bill’s position as Union Steward and Technical Director made him a supervisor overseeing all the departments on stage, including audio/visual, electric, and carpentry as well as setting up the orchestra. Bill Wilson was a master of this. Ernest Fleischmann dubbed him “Mr. Hollywood Bowl Stage” and once sent him to Germany to advise an organization there about how to set an orchestral stage. As Stage Manager for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Wilson also travelled with that orchestra on tour to Japan and Brazil, as well as into the recording studio. He also worked regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, setting up the orchestra in venues around the world, and in local community sites not designed for orchestral performance. The Property Master at the Hollywood Bowl is also involved with props in the theatrical sense. For Bill Wilson this could include everything from handling rubber chickens for a “Night in Old Vienna” program (don’t ask) and placing the cannons onstage for the 1812 Overture to bringing out stools for Jason Alexander and Jane Krakowski during a “Television Night at the Bowl” program, with a kiss and a purred “You’ll always be my Bill” from Krakowski as his reward. He was on a first-name basis with many of the artists who came to the Hollywood Bowl regularly, from Danny Kaye to Itzhak Perlman and Zubin Mehta. A gentle giant, Bill had an inherently calming presence, even in moments of stress.
Bowl Concert Performance of Verdi’s Requiem Released on DVD Grammy-winners Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic have released a DVD and Blu-ray of Verdi’s Requiem (on C Major Entertainment, distributed in the U.S. by Naxos of America), recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl on August 13 & 15, 2013, as

NEWS FROM LOS ANGELES COUNTY
PARKS AND RECREATION
By Russ Guiney Director, Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation
“How were your seats?” No one who attends a performance at the Hollywood Bowl can avoid this question – one that, in a beloved place where there’s hardly a vantage point without its virtues, is perhaps the world’s easiest question to answer. If you are fortunate enough this evening to be seated on one of the Bowl’s benches, allow me to suggest an alternative to the usual response. Try this one: “Brand new!” With that, you’ll be among the first patrons able to say this in more than 30 years.* While the Los Angeles Philharmonic was busy curating another great year of programming during the Bowl offseason, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Philharmonic partnered on an initiative to replace all of the theater’s bench seating. The newly-installed Alaskan cedar benches are part of $2.8 million in County-backed upgrades debuting tonight — thanks to Proposition A and other funds provided by Supervisor Yaroslavsky — joining new landscape, architectural, and tree lighting throughout the Bowl grounds, and freshlypaved parking lots (also under new lights). *** As we say hello to the new Bowl season, we also prepare to bid a farewell of sorts to a public servant whose leadership and foresight have been instrumental to a golden age of improvements at this historic venue. 48
Supervisor Yaroslavsky, who will leave office later this year after 20 years on the Board of Supervisors (and close to 40 as an elected official), has been an indispensable champion for this park and its visitors during his time as its County representative. Under his guidance, and thanks to his generosity, we’ve celebrated and savored numerous enhancements. To name just a few: rebuilding of the iconic Bowl shell (2004); restoration of the fountain, and installation of a new marquee to greet all visitors (2006); restroom facility renovations that introduced state-of-the-art amenities (2012); and last season’s arrival of new park furniture, as well as high-definition video screens — which have revolutionized how audiences enjoy performances with distinct theatrical elements. That is a record of accomplishment in which we can all take pride. As we settle into our seats — and another fantastic season — let’s take a moment to wish Supervisor Yaroslavsky well, and salute his efforts to make the unrivaled Hollywood Bowl experience that much more satisfying for all who enter. * The benches were last replaced in 1982. On average, the normal useful lifespan of the Alaskan yellow cedar used for seating is 30 years. Over time, the wood will naturally weather into the beautiful silvery-gray color with which Bowl-goers are familiar.

NEWS part of the LA Phil’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth. It features the Los Angeles Master Chorale (Music Director Grant Gershon), and four world-class soloists. This is the first release from Dudamel and the LA Phil recorded at the Hollywood Bowl. “Gustavo Dudamel puts an intimate flourish on Verdi’s Requiem,” said the Los Angeles Times. “A page was turned and a new chapter begun in the maturation of a music director.” Dudamel is joined by soprano Julianna Di Giacomo, a frequent guest at the Metropolitan Opera and LA Opera, among other international opera houses; mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung, known for performances with leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony; tenor Vittorio Grigolo, who regularly guests at La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera; and bass Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, who performs often at La Scala, the Wiener Staatsoper, London’s Royal Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.

Dudamel “draws beautifully nuanced playing from his highly responsive orchestra and offstage trumpeters (who really do sound lontano, in the distance),” according to Malcolm Riley in a recent Gramophone review. “The cellos float effortlessly through the opening phrases of the Offertorio and the woodwinds’ contribution is universally excellent. The visual impact of the bass drummer thwacking two drums simultaneously is matched by the sonic gain.” The DVD also includes a short documentary about the making of the production and an interview with Dudamel.

A TALE OF TWO HOUSES LAURENT-PERRIER AND BRUNO PAILLARD IN REIMS, FRANCE From a distance, Laurent-Perrier and Bruno Paillard, two prominent Champagne houses, would appear to have little in common but for the bubbles. Laurent-Perrier was founded more than 200 years ago and is steeped in tradition, a pillar of the Champenoise community in many ways. Bruno Paillard is the new kid on the block, just 30 years old and in the eyes of many somewhat the renegade. Laurent-Perrier enjoys the trappings of an older Champagne house, with caves dug into the ground, where aging bottles of bubbly gather cobwebs as they await the moment of disgorgement. Bruno Paillard is housed in what amounts to a modern warehouse, an arrangement Paillard himself describes as the horizontal rather than vertical norm that burrows deep into the ground.

Yet upon closer inspection, there is more that connects Laurent-Perrier and Bruno Paillard than separates them. Both houses, for example, rose to prominence on the coattails of two men driven to succeed. When Bernard de Nonancourt was given control of Laurent-Perrier by his mother shortly after World War II, the house, then known as Veuve Laurent-Perrier, ranked near the bottom of the Champagne market in sales. At the time of Nonancourt’s death just a few years ago, Laurent-Perrier was third overall in the region based on the value of its Champagne sold. It should come as no surprise that Nonancourt and Bruno Paillard were friends. Both
were men of vision. Paillard took over a small family business — they were growers — and launched a company that now controls 180 parcels of prime Champagne vineyards, the majority grand cru. Queried on the cépages, or blend of grapes used to produce Bruno Paillard’s nonvintage brut, Paillard responded: “That’s not what’s important. It means nothing. What’s important is where the grapes are from. You could have identical cépages in terms of percentages with grapes from lesser vineyards and you would have a different wine. What’s crucial is the origin of the grapes.” It is the French mantra: terroir, terroir, terroir. Whereas the prominence of LaurentPerrier was achieved over time, the rise of Bruno Paillard was meteoric, achieved in large measure when it was embraced by legendary French chef Joel Robuchon, who entered a deal early on to make Bruno Paillard the house Champagne at the Robuchon restaurants for ten years. The appeal of these two houses is that both have a boutique feel. Their wines are distinctive and pure, and both have carved a niche in the market with their nonvintage brut. In the case of Laurent-Perrier, however, the nonvintage brut that has captured the hearts of Champagne enthusiasts is the brilliant rosé, which tends to overshadow its traditional nonvintage brut cuvée but at more than twice the price. Both houses emphasize freshness in their Champagnes, and both keep large stocks of reserve wine from exceptional vintages to ensure the quality of their nonvintage blends going forward. One may have the benefit of history and tradition, the other the advantage of youth and modernity, but once they’ve been poured into your glass, you are likely to agree they have both arrived at the same place, albeit in their own ways. — Robert Whitley

1, 2, 3, 4… with a clenched fist and a blast of his alto-sax, SEUN KUTI launches into “IMF,” the opening track on A Long Way To The Beginning – his tightest, most electrifying album yet. This time around no one escapes the Afrobeat warrior’s ire... “My people are coming for what’s ours,” sings Kuti, 31, in his powerful, stentorian voice. “Going all out ’cause it’s now or never, breakin’ the chain, we gon’ sever…” It’s been a struggle to get to now. There were those who criticized his decision to front his father’s band; who said it was arrogant, even hubristic, to try and fill his father’s shoes. This was never Seun’s aim: “Fela will always be Number One,” says the Lagos-based scion, who inherited the extraordinary EGYPT 80 orchestra in 1997 when his father died. “What I want is for young people in Africa to believe in Africa, to come together for Africa.” A smile. “What I want is to inspire change.” And so Fela’s youngest child has full-steamed ahead with his own inimitable brand of Afrobeat: a sound as compelling as it was when Fela Anikulapo Kuti first fused jazz, funk, and soul with highlife and other African rhythms – but with topical lyrics and contemporary influences giving it a modern twist. So far there have been two critically acclaimed albums: 2008’s Many Things and 2011’s From Africa With Fury: Rise. With A Long Way To The Beginning, we’ve arrived where the journey starts. “This is the beginning of the reign of Afrobeat music,” says Kuti. “Afrobeat is not just about being Fela’s son anymore. There are hundreds of bands playing Afrobeat around the world, from Australia to Israel to the U.S. What began with my father has become a global movement.” And A Long Way To The Beginning is at its vanguard. Co-produced by the Grammy-winning American jazz pianist Robert Glasper, the album features a clutch of young artists from the African diaspora – the singer Nneka, rappers M-1 of dead prez and Blitz the Ambassador. It’s a recording that lassos all the passion, adrenaline, and searing truth of a Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 live show. From the stage to the studio… never from the studio to the stage… Kuti composed with his future collaborators in mind, heeding the advice given to him by Brian Eno, his co-producer on Rise: “Brian is a musical genius,” he says with a grin. “He told me that if I really wanted to work effectively with other people then I had to give them the
PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE
HBOWL_PROG_WK1.indd 2

breathing room to express themselves. This meant that once we got into the studio, Robert [Glasper] was able to bring his own ideas to the music, and add more color to the sound.” Mutual friends in New York introduced Kuti to Blitz the Ambassador (“I liked his take on African hip-hop and the message it should be portraying”); the Ghanaian-American spitter lends his vocals to “African Smoke,” a ferocious rallying cry on which Glasper also guests. Then there’s his friend, the German-Nigerian songbird Nneka, who delivers the lyrics of “Black Woman” – a melodious paean to the women of the Motherland – in a voice both elevating and life-affirming. “There’s a lot of propaganda about how all African men are sexist and I wanted to
address that,” says Kuti, who with Yetunde Ademiluyi, a singer and backing dancer in Egypt 80, recently became the first-time parent of a baby girl. “Nneka also represents what I’d love to see in young black female artists, in that she portrays herself as nature intended her to be.” “Black Woman” also sees Kuti namechecking strong female African personalities: Maya Angelou. Angela Davis. Nina Simone. His grandmother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, a prominent civil rights campaigner (and the first woman in Nigeria to drive a car) – who died in 1978 after the Nigerian military threw her from a window during a raid on the Kalakuta Republic, her son Fela’s compound. “I’m a member of a family that’s always been part of the struggle,” says Kuti, who references his unconventional upbringing in the anthemic “Kalakuta Boy.” “But more and more there are educated African youth who understand the system, who know that they deserve to be respected as citizens, and to live peaceful lives as human beings. This frustration is coming to the boil. “Bringing a child into this world has given me a kind of renewed energy to make sure I stand for change in Africa,” he continues. “I want her to grow up in an Africa that represents its people.” Having long lost faith in the music industry – “Today it’s controlled by corporations who own the media, which then dictates what ‘good’ music is” – Kuti is fighting the fight elsewhere. His weapons are fearsome: social media. Socio-political movements such as Occupy Nigeria and Change Movement Nigeria (changemovementng.org): “We are a group of young concerned Africans who believe that with personal effort and dedication we can make a difference, not by going crying to western countries for donations.” “This album is a soundtrack for the mindset of most young people in Africa today,” says Kuti, of A Long Way To The Beginning. “As African youth we have to stand for what we want.” “I have to believe that I am making Fela proud,” says Kuti, whose shoes are one size larger than his father’s anyway. “Over the years the band has come back to its peak, to the place they were in when Fela was fronting them.” He pauses, smiles. “And now,” he says, “we go forward.” – from an article by Jane Cornwell
Like Stevie Wonder and Prince before him, ROMAN GIANARTHUR is a miracle in the making, a jaw-dropping singer, composer, arranger, producer, and performer — an innovative and inspiring 21st-century redefinition of what it means to be an artist.
Originally from Winston-Salem, NC, Roman spends his days putting the finishing touches on his magisterial debut LP The Good Dreamer while consistently broadening the expectations of what a soul singer can do: write musicals, compose concertos, conduct orchestras, score films, pick up new instruments and learn their mysteries at prodigious speed, all while offering heartfelt reflections on the social implications of art and the need for more beauty in the world around us. With a laugh, Roman shakes his head and says, “I just love to practice...and [tell] myself stories while I practice. It’s really my favorite thing to do!”

ABOUT THE
ARTISTS
The title of RÖYKSOPP + ROBYN’s new mini album, Do It Again – the fi rst release from Röyksopp’s forthcoming new album – is more than just a name; it represents a plea from music fans who have been anxiously awaiting another collaboration from the same three artists that fi rst created the head-spinning, forward-thinking pop standards, “The Girl and
sessions were about feeding off of each other’s ideas and harnessing that indelible chemistry they share. The result was to renew their respective passions not just for making music, but songs that moved way beyond anything any of them had done before. “We just started making music and it wasn’t with a particular record in mind, it was just us
“… it will be nice for people to hear that this doesn’t sound like Röyksopp featuring Robyn or Robyn produced by Röyksopp, it’s just something else entirely,” says Torbjörn. Started at the end of 2012, the genesis of Do It Again was formed in a decidedly laidback environment, with Robyn travelling to Röyksopp’s studio in Bergen, Norway, for the
the Robot” and “None of Dem.” But while the former was for Röyksopp’s Junior album, the latter appeared on Robyn’s Body Talk series and both were made in “album mode,” so to speak. The Do It Again mini album represents the evolution of their working relationship. Curated at a time when all three of them were at something of a creative impasse, initial
crashing together and working as a band more than two separate acts.” That word “band” in all its connotations is important; Röyksopp and Robyn, the entity, represents three friends experimenting in a studio and creating a fi ve-track mini album from scratch, with production and songwriting covered by all three members.
odd weekend here and there. With sessions started for no other reason than they enjoyed each other’s company (“we have good chemistry and we like to hang out” states Torbjörn), the weekends soon became akin to a pop youth camp: “Sleeping in sleeping bags and eating candy when you’re not allowed to,” laughs Torbjörn. For Robyn, this idea of relaxing with
PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

like-minded friends with the pressure off was what appealed. “It kind of had to be that way because I didn’t really feel like I had an album in me at the time and I wanted to experiment and do other things than work on my own album,” she says. “We’ve always had this very relaxed, weird sort of silent acknowledgement of each other’s personalities. This weird connection. We have similar references in terms of culture – it goes beyond movies and things like that but into things like mood.” One of the first songs they started working on together was “Every Little Thing,” the mini album’s tear-stained electro-ballad (key lyric: “baby, why you falter, when you know I’m waiting here”). “I was just feeling sad when we wrote that song,” sighs Robyn about the emotional seed she brought to the session. This sense of freedom to experiment led to them creating the mini album’s opening song and perhaps defining moment in the shape of the near ten-minute-long “Monument,” a remixed version of which will also appear on Röyksopp’s fourth album, due out later this year. Built around layers of sampled vocal sighs, a delicate electronic pulse, and a lilting melody, it’s a song that sounds nothing like anything they’ve done before, and in a lot of ways helped focus the mini album. “With this round of collaboration it’s fair to say that ‘Monument’ played a big part,” explains Svein. That’s not to say that they’ve left the massive pop blockbusters out, and in the shape of the mini album’s title track they’ve created one of the most effervescent, effortlessly uplifting electro-pop bangers in recent years. “We obviously couldn’t leave those types of songs behind – we had to have the big pop songs on there as that’s what we’ve been put on this earth to do,” confirms Svein. Starting life as a rave-inspired throwback, the final version of “Do It Again” sounds like it could only have been made by Röyksopp and Robyn. “It was one of the fun nights in Bergen,” remembers Torbjørn with a smile. “We had a really good time, a lot of laughs and we just sat down and wrote the lyrics. It’s all about capturing the mood that we were in.” Elsewhere, the mini album covers big thumping house in the shape of the club-ready “Sayit,” which features a near duet between Robyn and what sounds like an aroused robot. On the other end of the spectrum there’s the closing “Inside the Idle Hour Club,” which
P6
utilizes Robyn’s vocal discreetly to create a pensive, slowly evolving soundscape that’s worth diving into headlong. The diversity is a reflection of both Röyksopp and Robyn’s desire to create something brand new rather than repeating former glories, but at the same time there is a running thread throughout that highlights what makes them both so amazing. The idea was to create “something that feels contemporary but not generic” as Svein puts it, and also to find a mixture of Robyn’s rawness and the intricacies of Röyksopp’s production. “In this band there aren’t any Phil Collins; in this band we’re all Tony Banks,” laughs Svein. “It was very much that everyone contributed on every level. We all found the melodies, the harmonies and worked on the production side together.” It is, as you will hear, the perfect coming together of three distinct musical minds.
ZHALA’s haunting and evocative melodies are packed with a serious punch, full of thought-provoking lyrics and undeniable hooks. Using Stockholm as her base, but with
the mindset of a modern day transnational, Zhala’s music is futuristic, labeled by the artist herself as “cosmic pop.” Zhala (Rifat) was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. She became very involved in the local art and club scene and further developed her talents as an artist through dance, song, and live shows. This path eventually led to her being signed to Robyn’s Konichiwa Records in 2012. While recording the music for her first release, Zhala continued to tour, playing several festivals (Bestival, Isle of Wight, Way Out West); a unique performance at the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at Stockholm’s Moderna Museet; and most recently, opening slots for Robyn in London, Berlin, and Stockholm. The darkly epic track “Slippin’ Around” emerged online at the start of 2012 with a creepily striking video, alerting the likes of My Old Kentucky Blog, Discobelle, and The Line of Best Fit that a new and unusual pop star was about to emerge. February 2014 saw the release of Zhala’s first EP, Prophet. The EP was co-produced with Mathias Oldén. Zhala is managed by D.E.F.

ABOUT THE
PROGRAM
The July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular explores the musical heritage of the United States, this summer with an emphasis on film music and marches. Multifaceted entertainer Steve Martin joins conductor John Morris Russell and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a rousing set of his contemporary bluegrass-styled songs to celebrate our country’s 238th birthday. A very active conductor and orchestrator of film music, Pete Anthony (b. 1963) was commissioned by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra to create a piece for John Morris Russell’s inaugural season in 2012 as the orchestra’s Conductor. The result was The Launch (subtitled “Conduktor’s Theme”), which does just that: take off with a classic fanfare in the Aaron Copland – John Williams line and generate tremendous orchestral energy. Grammy-winning composer Alan Silvestri (b. 1950) was an early starter, scoring The Doberman Gang when he was 21 years old. Since then he has written prolifically for both films and television. He has collaborated regularly with producer Robert Zemeckis, including the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, The Polar Express, Beowulf, and Flight. From his main theme for Joe Johnston’s 2011 Captain America: The First Avenger, Silvestri arranged a powerful and stirring Captain America March, which received its premiere at the annual “Hollywood in Vienna” concert in 2011, where Silvestri received the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award. Patrick Doyle (b. 1953) has composed over 50 international feature film scores, including Brave, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Gosford Park, Sense and Sensibility, and Much Ado About Nothing, collaborating with some of the most acclaimed directors in the world. Doyle has received two Academy Awards; Golden Globe and César nominations; and in 1989 the Ivor Novello Award for Best Film Theme, for Henry V. Classically trained, Doyle graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in 1975. After many years composing for theater, radio, and television, he joined the Renaissance Theatre Company as composer and musical director in 1987. In 1989, director Kenneth
P8
Branagh commissioned Doyle to compose the score for Henry V. They have subsequently collaborated on several pictures, including 2011’s Thor, from which Doyle has created a colorful, evocative suite. Robert Lowden (1920-1998) served in the U.S. Army Band during World War II and went on to compose and arrange for Claude Thornhill’s big band and for 101 Strings. His Armed Forces Salute gathers the songs and marches of the branches of the United States military, with allusions to other patriotic music in the transitions. The earliest version of the Army’s song was the “Caisson Song,” written by three lieutenants stationed in the Philippines in 1908. In 1917 John Philip Sousa was asked to adapt it as a march for the Field Artillery, and in that form it became a huge popular hit. “Semper Paratus” (Always Ready), the official song of the U.S. Coast Guard, was composed by Coast Guard Captain Francis S. Van Boskerck while stationed in Alaska in 1927. The “Marines Hymn” gradually acquired anonymous lyrics in the 19th century. The tune now used is based on the Gendarmes Duet from Jacques Offenbach’s operetta Geneviève de Brabant, which premiered in Paris in 1859. “The United States Air Force” – also known as “Off we go into the wild blue yonder,” its first line – was written by Captain Robert MacArthur Crawford as the “Army Air Corps Song” in 1939, and won a competition organized by the Air Corps, with a $1,000 prize from Liberty magazine. (In 1947 the words “United States Air Force” replaced “Army Air Corps” in the title.) “Anchors Away” is the fight song of the U.S. Naval Academy, and was composed in 1906 by Lieutenant Charles A. Zimmerman, then bandmaster at the Academy. John Williams (b. 1932) is indisputably one of the most prolific and popular composers of our time. He is the vastly influential and popular dean of American film composers, of course, but his works for the concert hall also have met with acclaim from both critics and audience – Soundings, composed for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s inaugural festivities for Walt Disney Concert Hall, was a great success, and it joined a long list of works commissioned by leading orchestras and soloists around the world. For the end titles
of Steven Spielberg’s moving 1998 World War II epic, Saving Private Ryan, Williams created a nobly restrained “Hymn to the Fallen.” Californian Carmen Dragon (1914-1984) was a highly successful composer, arranger, and conductor. Trained at San Jose State College, he worked as a nightclub pianist, and then as an arranger in Hollywood. He eventually scored more than 30 films, as well as television and stage shows. He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl many times in the 1950s and ’60s, recorded prolifically with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony, and served as music director of the Glendale Symphony for many years. His evocative arrangements — here of Irving Berlin’s classic patriotic anthem “God Bless America,” first sung by Kate Smith on a radio broadcast on Armistice Day in 1938 — are still performed by orchestras and choirs around the world. John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was known the world over as a bandleader and the composer of dozens of marches, as well as operettas, orchestral suites, and songs. The three marches on tonight’s program are American classics. The Washington Post was completed by Sousa in 1889, a commission for the Washington Post newspaper award ceremonies for promising journalists and essayists. Sousa penned Semper Fidelis in 1888. The march takes its title from the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps: Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful. It was dedicated to those who inspired it – the officers and men of the United States Marine Corps. In Sousa’s own words: “I wrote Semper Fidelis one night while in tears, after my comrades of the Marine Corps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico.” It became one of his most popular marches, and Sousa himself considered it his best. The Stars and Stripes Forever! was written in 1896 while Sousa was aboard ship from England to the United States.

ABOUT THE
ARTISTS
The 2013/14 season marked JOHN MORRIS RUSSELL’s third full season as Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops, one of Cincinnati’s most treasured assets and one of the world’s most respected pops orchestras. Consistently winning international praise for his extraordinary music-making and visionary leadership, he is also Music Director of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He completed his role as Music Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in Ontario, Canada at the end of the 2011/12 season, whereupon he was named that orchestra’s first Conductor Laureate. With his position at the Pops, Russell leads performances at Cincinnati’s Music Hall and the Riverbend Music Center; additionally he conducts the orchestra in concerts throughout the Greater Cincinnati region as well as on tour – serving as a musical ambassador to help cultivate the reputation of the Cincinnati region as one of the world’s
leading cultural centers. No stranger to Cincinnati audiences, for many seasons John Morris Russell served as Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He was recognized for his innovative programming and commitment to attracting new and diverse audiences to orchestral music, creating the Classical Roots: Spiritual Heights series, which brought the
music of African-American composers and performers to thousands of listeners in area churches, and was also the co-creator of the Christmas spectacular, Home for the Holidays. He has had two recordings released with the Cincinnati Pops: Home for the Holidays and Superheroes! As a guest conductor, Russell has worked with many of North America’s most distinguished ensembles, leading Canadian orchestras that include Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Victoria, KitchenerWaterloo, and Orchestra London. In the U.S. he has conducted the orchestras of Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Dallas, and Louisville, Miami’s New World Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, the New York Pops, the New York City Ballet, the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and the Cleveland Orchestra at the Blossom Music Festival. Abroad he conducted at the famed Musikverein in Vienna in a concert that featured the Harlem Boychoir, the Vienna Choir Boys, and the actor Gregory Peck. The 2011/12 season marked Russell’s eleventh and final season as Music Director of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. While at Windsor he fostered a decade of unprecedented artistic growth and invigorated the musical life of the Windsor-Essex region. Under John Morris Russell’s baton, the WSO made seventeen national broadcasts on CBC Radio 2. The most recent broadcast recording of Aurora Borealis by Jordon Nobles was selected to represent Canada in June 2010 in the 57th annual International Rostrum of Composers in Lisbon, Portugal. The WSO’s first nationally televised production was created with Russell for the CBC Television series Opening Night, and subsequently won the Gold World medal for “Best Performance Program” at the
New York Festivals Awards for Television and New Media, as well as a Gemini Award nomination. In 2006 the Windsor Symphony Orchestra released Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf narrated by the internationally acclaimed actor, Colm Feore, and Last Minute Lulu, composed by WSO Composerin-Residence Brent Lee, with text by the Newbery Medal-winning author Christopher Paul Curtis. The recording won Russell and the WSO its first Juno nomination for Best Children’s Album in 2008. In October 2010, he was honored as the first recipient of the Arts Leadership Award by the Windsor Endowment for the Arts, in recognition of the enormous contribution he has made to the region’s cultural life. And in the spring of 2011 the University of Windsor awarded John Morris Russell an Honorary Doctor of Law degree. Russell is widely considered one of North America’s leaders in orchestral educational programming. From 1997 to 2009 he conducted the “LinkUP!” educational concert series at Carnegie Hall, the oldest and most celebrated series of its kind, created by Walter Damrosch in 1891 and made famous by Leonard Bernstein. The “Sound Discoveries” series Russell developed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra remains a leading model for educational concerts. In Windsor, his commitment to education was evidenced by his creation of concert series and projects that included Peanut Butter n’ Jam, Family Jamboree, and One Community – One Symphony, in addition to which he spearheaded the creation of the Windsor-Essex Youth Choir and the Windsor Symphony Youth Orchestra. John Morris Russell has also served as associate conductor of the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, director of the orchestral program at Vanderbilt University, and music director with the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth, Massachusetts. He received a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Williams College in Massachusetts. He has also studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, and the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors in Hancock, Maine.

“This album feels like a giant step into uncharted territory for me,” STEVE MARTIN says of Love Has Come for You, his remarkable new collaboration with EDIE BRICKELL. “When we started, we thought we were just playing around. But when we finished, we realized we weren’t.” Although the new musical partners have already built widely loved individual bodies of work, their inaugural duo effort is a substantial departure, as a well as a creative milestone, for both artists. Love Has Come for You offers 13 eloquently rootsy Martin/Brickell compositions that combine the former’s inventive, expressive five-string banjo work with the latter’s heart-tugging vocals and vivid, detail-rich lyrics. “This is the kind of music that I’ve always wanted to make, but I never knew how until now,” Brickell states, adding, “I just fell in love with all of these songs, because they all represent something that’s true.” Indeed, such deeply evocative numbers as “When You Get to Asheville,” “Sarah Jane and the Iron Mountain Baby,” “Remember Me This Way,” and the haunting title track offer playful, resonant character studies, conveying a wealth of imagery, emotion, and musical ideas within spacious, mostly acoustic arrangements and irresistibly accessible tunes. Steve Martin is currently in the fifth decade of a uniquely varied and accomplished career in which he’s excelled as a comedian, actor, author, and playwright, and as a Grammywinning, boundary-pushing bluegrass banjoist and composer. His fellow Texas native Edie Brickell initially burst onto the national scene in the late 1980s fronting the New Bohemians, and has since carved out an iconoclastic solo career that’s solidified her reputation as a uniquely compelling singer and a songwriter of rare insight.
P10
Love Has Come for You is the product of a vibrant songwriting partnership that took on a life of its own after Martin invited Brickell to write lyrics for a banjo tune he’d recently come up with. “I played it for her, and she walked around the room and hummed some lyrics, which she later recorded and sent to me,” Martin recalls. “I realized that Edie’s approach is that she works best when she goes away and does it herself, and that became the blueprint for how we worked together.” Despite the fact that Martin and Brickell lived on opposite coasts, their working relationship quickly blossomed, with the two writing separately and exchanging digital files via email. “I’d write the banjo melodies, and then Edie would take them and write the lyrics and come up with a melody to work against the banjo,” Martin explains. “There was a point when we were in such a zone that I was writing a song a day, and the next day I would get the song back from Edie with the lyrics. Looking in my inbox and seeing an attachment from Edie was always like getting a Christmas present.” “Steve worked really fast, and every time I turned around there was a new banjo melody coming at me, which was very exciting,” Brickell adds. “The music inspired the lyrics, and the stories came straight out of Steve’s melodies. I would sing along to the melody, and the lyrics would come all at once. Then I’d pull out my iPhone and record it. With most of the songs, it was so easy; I’d just hear the tune and there were all these images and pictures, and all you had to do was pull the lyrics out of the air.” The results of the pair’s unconventional cowriting method are both organic and inspired, combining the gentle yet feisty humanity of Brickell’s vocals with the effortless economy of Martin’s banjo work, whose understated
subtlety contrasts the fleet-fingered picking he’s employed on his acclaimed bluegrass recordings. “It’s the way I’ve longed to play and hear the banjo for so long, rather than it being present at every moment and playing sixty notes a second,” Martin says. “I think the banjo can be so evocative when it’s used sparingly, and that was in the back of my mind as we were writing. In these songs, the point is to tell the story and get out.” The collaborative writing method allowed Brickell to channel some personal history that she hadn’t explored previously. “Steve’s banjo melodies brought a sense of my family and my history into the songwriting,” she notes. “I grew up around a real matriarchal society. My grandmother was one of 11, and she and her sisters were always at the house playing cards and casually gossiping and telling all these colorful stories of scandals and tragedies about ‘down home’ – Paris, Texas. There’s a lot of that in these songs. I think that the characters in these songs are all me, or at least there’s always some little something in there that’s how I feel and think about things.” Once they’d written Love Has Come for You’s 13 songs, Martin and Brickell agreed that the material called for a recording approach that would maintain the spare intimacy of their original lo-fi demos. Towards that end, they called upon legendary producer and longtime Martin friend Peter Asher. “Peter turned out to be absolutely the right guy, and I love what he did,” Martin says, adding, “We started out with these homespun demos that Edie and I had recorded on an iPhone or iPad, and we kind of fell in love with the sound of those. We wanted to keep that feeling, so Edie and I recorded our tracks for the album very quickly, in about four and a half days, and then we added other people’s parts after that.” Among the notable players contributing to the album are rising-star bassist Esperanza Spalding, veteran studio guitarist Waddy Wachtel, and Nickel Creek alumni Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins, as well as the members of the esteemed bluegrass combo the Steep Canyon Rangers, with whom Martin has recorded and toured extensively.

Nobody Knows You, they headed north to Woodstock, NY, to Levon Helm’s famed studio with Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell. Over the months before they started to record Tell The Ones I Love (released September 10, 2013), they sent him several dozen new songs to consider. And while the Steep Canyon Rangers were certainly open to recording songs by other composers, or to dip into traditional material, Campbell ultimately had them record all original tunes, based both on the strength of the songs, and the band’s arrangements. This seems fitting for a band whose stellar reputation is based on performing original material, and who had just won the Best Bluegrass Album Grammy for Nobody Knows You. These days, it’s hard to talk about the Steep Canyon Rangers without mentioning Steve Martin. After meeting at a party and clicking immediately, Martin invited the band to tour and record with him. 2011’s collaboration Rare Bird Alert was nominated for a Grammy, and later that year, they won IBMA’s Entertainer of the Year Award. They average about 50 dates a year together, touring as Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, and most recently with the addition of special guest Edie Brickell. What has emerged is a real collaboration of seven
consummate musicians – creating music that they are passionate about, and blending it with humor to form a sophisticated show. These collaborations have stretched the Steep Canyon Rangers musically, and definitely broadened their horizons and experiences, which include recent appearances on Austin City Limits, the Late Show with David Letterman, and the Today Show, and performances at Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, MerleFest, Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit, as well as their own Mountain Song festival and Mountain Song at Sea cruise.

ABOUT THE
PROGRAM
Tonight’s celebratory program explores a wide range of traditions in Chinese music, as well as the virtuosity and expressive strength of Chinese artists. From authentic folk elements, through hybrid pop, to contemporary acrobatics and orchestral works in the Western symphonic style, this is truly “An Evening of Chinese Splendor.” Ali Mountain is a group of 18 peaks in Taiwan, the highest being Tower Hill, at nearly 9,000 feet. Famous for spectacular sunrise views, this mountain group forms a popular tourist destination, with a railroad to take visitors up to some of the peaks. The mystery and majesty of the mountains are reflected in Ali Mountain Evergreen. The piece is an orchestral setting of the theme for The Magnificent Happenings on Mount Ali (1949), one of the earliest movies directed by Chang Cheh (1923-2002), who became a prolific director of wuxia and kung fu films. The song, with lyrics by You-Ping Deng and later choreographed as a stylized traditional dance, has become popular through Taiwan, and an international icon of Taiwanese culture. It is heard here in an arrangement by Yuan-Kai Bao (b. 1944), a professor of music at the Tianjin Conservatory (in his home town) whose orchestral works include four programmatic symphonies and the eight-movement suite Symphonic Sketches of Taiwan. The story of the Yellow River Concerto began 75 years ago, when Xian Xinghai (1905-1945) completed his eight-movement patriotic Yellow River Cantata. The secondlongest river in China, the Yellow River (Huang He) is considered the cradle of Chinese civilization, and it is the central symbol in the poems by Guan Weiran that Xian Xinghai set in his cantata, stirring Chinese resistance to the contemporary Japanese invasion. Trained at music schools in Canton, Beijing, and Shanghai, Xian Xinghai moved to Paris in 1930, studying composition with Vincent D’Indy and Paul Dukas. After his return to China in 1935, he worked for recording and film companies, and headed the music department of the Lu Xun College of the Arts in Yanan, where he joined the Communist Party. He wrote a great body of political and patriotic songs and choruses, and moved to Moscow in 1940 to compose music for a Soviet documentary film. The
Notes by John Henken
German invasion of the Soviet Union and the resultant disruptions kept him in Kazakhstan for most of the war, composing two programmatic symphonies, among other works. In poor health in his last years, he died seeking medical treatment in Moscow. In China Xian Xinghai was held up as a model revolutionary musician and given a Musician of the People award. The Yellow River Cantata is characteristic of his ambitious combination of folk songs and dances, traditional instruments, and Beijing Opera elements with European harmony and forms. For its history, if nothing else, the cantata remained in favor during the political and cultural revolution after the war, even as Western music came under prohibition. In 1969, the Central Philharmonic Society – suspect by nature and underemployed – asked a group of musicians to create a piano concerto based on Xian Xinghai’s cantata. The process began with the pianist Yin Chengzong and Li Delun, artistic director of the Central Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, and the team included Chu Wanghua, Liu Zhuang, Sheng Lihong, and others. An internationally acclaimed virtuoso, Yin Chengzong played the premiere performance of the Yellow River Concerto in Beijing in 1970, with the Central Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra directed by Li Delun. The Concerto received its first performance outside China at the Saratoga Festival in New York in 1973, when Daniel Epstein played the work with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy. They subsequently recorded it, and it has been recorded many times since. Rueibin Chen performed it at the 2010 World Expo in China. As arranged by that collective effort, the eight-movement cantata became a fourmovement concerto in the traditional Western genre, with a brilliant solo part that suggests the concertos of Rachmaninoff. It also functions as a tone poem, illuminating the course of the river through the land and through history, in much the same way that Smetana used the Moldau (Vltava) in Má Vlast. The opening prelude is based on a folk song, “The Song of the Yellow River Boatmen,” in which the boatmen struggle against the might of the river, vividly depicted with surging crescendos and percussion. The gentler, sustaining aspects of the river come to the fore in the broad slow movement, “Ode to the Yellow River.”
Titled “The Wrath of the Yellow River,” the third movement brings with a flute solo that the piano picks up and develops. This section brings the Yellow River into the 1930s and the violence and horror of the Sino-Japanese War. The “Defend the Yellow River” finale is politically as well as musically aspiring. To Xian Xinghai’s folkloric inspirations, the creative team added the melody of “The East Is Red,” the de facto anthem of the Cultural Revolution, in turbulent, ultimately triumphant combinations. The Yellow River Concerto was commonly scorned critically in its early years in the West, considered derivative and esthetically reactionary; an odd, culturally-blinkered response to a genuinely communal “people’s” music. It has lived on into an era more receptive of genre-blending, retro-referential crosscultural mixes on the strength of its supposed faults: strong tunes clearly presented in an emotionally affirmative context. The Spring Festival Overture is a work strongly influenced by Xian Xinghai’s efforts to interpret Chinese folk music in Western musical styles. It was composed in 1955-1956 by Li Huanzhi (1919-2000), who had studied at the Lu Xun College of the Arts while Xian Xinghai was directing the music program there. The Spring Festival of the title is the Chinese New Year, and the themes come from folk music from the Shanbei region. Like the Yellow River Concerto, it exists in various versions, some employing more traditional Chinese instruments than others. A recording of the Spring Festival Overture was sent into space with China’s first moon probe in 2007; other music sent out on the probe included “Ode to the Yellow River” and “The East Is Red.”

ABOUT THE
ARTISTS
SONG ZUYING is one of China’s most prominent and best-established vocal artists. She studied at the Minzu University’s Music School and the China Conservatory of Music, earning a doctorate degree in ethnic vocal music.
During her brilliant career of more than two decades as an ethnic singer, Song Zuying has performed a wide repertoire of Chinese ethnic songs and artistic vocal works from overseas and starred in major operas and musicals, including Red Coral and Tropical Rains. Nearly 20 of her signature songs have become popular classics at home and abroad, including “Spice Girls,” “Waiting for You,” “Good Days,” “Winding Waters Leading to My Home,” “I Will Grow into You,” “Soldiers Together,” “Soldier Boys,” “Hero,” “Chapter of Sunshine,” “From Good to Better,” “New Ode to Liuyang River,” “Gazing at the Moon,” “Our Love for China,” “Flying Song of the Earth,” “An Oriental Jasmine for You,” “Blue Skies,’’ “Hope Springs Eternal in China,” “A Joyful Heart”, “Let us Dance,” and “Blossoms of Pagoda Tree.” All these works have become household songs throughout China and among Chinese people living abroad. Song Zuying has made a point of fusing her artistic pursuit with the essence of China’s ethnic and folk music, and her singing bears a distinctive mark of China’s ethnic vocal tradition. As her efforts of expanding and reinventing the tradition came to assimilate features of modern vocal arts, she has evolved an inimitable style of expressive singing, which has proved a spectacular success in China’s contemporary vocal music. Over the years, Song Zuying has won a host of awards and honors at China’s most prestigious music competitions, including the top award at the China National Ethnic Vocal Music Competition, multiple Golden Awards at the CCTV Music Video Competition, multiple honors

at the China Central Radio’s “The Nation’s Favorite Singers,” multiple top honors at the SARFT TV Art “Starlight Awards,” the Gold Record Award of China, a CCTV China Ethnic Music Legacy Award, a China Ethnic Vocal Music Excellence Award, a “Plum Blossom Award” of Chinese drama, the honor of “Artist of Excellence and Integrity” from the Ministry of Personnel, a “China Charity Award” from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, recognition as one of China’s Most Globally Influential Women in 2005, the Public Image Award and Remarkable Achievement Award of Chinese Artists in 2008, and a “Notable Talent” designation by the Central Publicity Department, as well as a Kennedy Center Honor and a nomination for the 49th Grammys. Recent years have seen Song Zuying actively engaged in international artistic exchanges – she performed in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and countries in Europe and Southeast Asia. In 2002 she was invited to sing at the FIFA World Cup gala performance in South Korea. In December 2002, as cultural ambassador for the 30 years of Sino-Australian diplomatic ties, she held the solo concert “Day of Joy” at the Sydney Opera House. In November 2003, her solo show reached the Golden Hall in Vienna, Austria. The two highly successful performances inspired Song Zuying in her drive to introduce China’s musical art to peoples of the world: on October 12, 2006, she brought her solo concert, “What a Beautiful Jasmine,” to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., which attained unprecedented success – the mayor of Washington, D.C. named the day “Song Zuying’s Day” to honor her remarkable contribution to the cultural exchange between China and America. And in May 2007, she became the first Asian artist to earn a Kennedy Center Honor. Her album Sound of a Century, Classic Songs of Chinese Cinema has been preserved in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. From 2009 to 2011, Song Zuying has held successful concerts at the National Stadium in Beijing, the Shanghai World Expo Plaza, and the Taipei Arena in Taiwan. In 2011, her spectacular tour brought 11 large-scale concerts to China’s top ten cities. Prior to the 2012 Olympics, she brought the concert “Transcending the Summit” to London’s Royal Albert Hall, joined by tenor Plácido Domingo and pianist Lang Lang. In February 2013, she mounted the successful solo concert tour entitled “Cultural China & Festivity of Spring” on both coasts of the United States.
In recent years, her collaborations with worldfamous tenors such as Plácido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli have served to raise the profile of China’s ethnic music across the world. Among her numerous albums and videos are Good Days: the Best of Song Zuying, Love of Music: Classics of Song Zuying, Sound of a Century: Classic Songs of Chinese Cinema, Song Zuying at Sydney Opera House, Song Zuying at Golden Hall in Vienna, Song Zuying at Kennedy Center, Glamour of 2009 Summer Concert at Bird’s Nest, Concert at Taipei Arena, Flying, Oriental Peony, Prelude of Plum Blossoms, and Epics of Romance. Apart from her artistic achievements, Song also actively takes on social responsibility by participating in charity events. songwriter, record producer, actor, and film director. He was formally trained at the Eastman School of Music, Williams College, and Berklee College of Music, and his musical style blends Chinese elements (such as Beijing Opera, traditional music of Chinese ethnic minorities, and classical Chinese orchestra) with Western pop music elements (such as hip-hop and R&B). Along with singing, he is a multi-talented instrumentalist. He took part in violin and piano lessons and taught himself the guitar and drums. During his time at Williams College, he was in an all-male a capella group which recorded several demo tracks. Wang has been singing and recording since 1995 and he has released 14 Mandarin albums, two Japanese albums, three compilation albums, and 15 Mandarin, Japanese, and Cantonese singles. He has contributed to two movie soundtracks and several other studio albums. Wang is also a four-time winner of Taiwan’s Golden Melody Awards (the “Grammys” of Taiwanese music). His concert at the Beijing Bird’s Nest on April 14, 2012 was the first solo pop concert to be held at the venue. In addition to his music, Wang has acted and starred in many films, including Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution and Jackie Chan’s film Little Big Soldier. He also directed and starred in his own film, Love in Disguise. Along with being in movies, he is an environmental activist, and his music album Change Me was dedicated to raising ecoawareness among Chinese youth. Wang was one of the first torchbearers for the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics and performed in the closing ceremony. He was again a torchbearer for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, making him the only person in the Mandarin pop circle to participate in the event twice. Furthermore, Wang is recognized for his efforts and financial contributions to charity. He is a long-running ambassador for World Vision Taiwan and was selected to be World Vision Malaysia’s 15th anniversary ambassador (from October 2011 to September 2012). He has visited Laos and Sierra Leone in the last couple of years to raise awareness about the state of poverty in those countries. He endorsed over 20 underprivileged children all over the world with World Vision. Since 2012, Wang has put together a free show for his fans at the beginning of every year. These shows have been performed in Taiwan, Shanghai, and Singapore.
Wang Leehom was listed as one of Goldsea’s “The 100 Most Inspiring Asian Americans of All Time.” He is one of the most highly visible, well-respected, and popular celebrities in Asia.
RUEIBIN CHEN’s distinguished career as an internationally acclaimed pianist has earned him a reputation for technical brilliance, immense energy, and intense artistic
expression. He was the opening soloist in the 2010 World Expo in China performing the Yellow River Concerto; critics hailed it as the best performance of the iconic piece in its history. Chen’s musicianship has been highly praised by renowned musicians and critics. The Boston Globe raved, “He plays with white-hot energy, steel-fingered power and athletic virtuosity ... with delicacy and imagination.” The UK Times said, “He mesmerized the audience as his fingers traveled the ivories with at times mind-boggling precision and swiftness and a level of emotion which delivered each note, each chord, to the heart of each member of the audience.” Neue Zürcher Zeitung called him “one of those geniuses that come along once in twenty years.” A Chinese Austrian born in Taiwan, Chen won a total of 18 medals, five of them gold; before the age of 20 in various international piano competitions such as in Tel Aviv (Rubinstein), Warsaw (Chopin), Salt Lake City (Bachauer),
Athens (Callas), Vienna, Manresa, and Italy (Rome, Rachmaninoff, Bellini, and Stresa). Chen received his first piano lessons at five from his father, who was an elementary school music teacher. He started his career as a child prodigy without any formal training and at age ten made his debut with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra as a concert pianist. At thirteen, he started his formal training and was sent to Vienna, Austria, where he obtained a concert diploma from the Vienna Conservatory as one of its youngest graduates. Subsequently, he received a soloist’s examination award from the Hannover Hochschule für Musik in Germany and then continued his study under the legendary Russian pianist Lazar Berman as his only disciple of Asian descent. In addition to his artistry, Chen’s humble background and the hardship he endured as a financially strapped youngster growing up in Europe all by himself have inspired many young pianists, both in Asia and abroad. His unique blend of East/West sensibility, his Chinese heritage, his European upbringing and training, his modest personality, and his inspiring personal story have earned him a significant following all over the world. Chen made his European debut to much acclaim in the Grosser Saal of the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Since then, Chen has toured regularly throughout the world, performing solo and with orchestras in major concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Opéra de Monte Carlo, Warsaw Philharmonie, Bolshoi Hall in Moscow, F. Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Symphony Hall in Osaka, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Beijing Music Hall, National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center in Taipei, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and the Sydney Opera House. Most recently, in addition to performances at the Segerstrom and Bing Concert Halls, Chen was the inaugural soloist at the brand new Wallis Center for Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. In addition to concert performances, Chen has held various artist-in-residence positions with different entities, including

Hong Kong Radio Television, and has acted as music director of various chamber festivals to promote music outreach. He has been invited to perform at many festivals, such as the International Salzburg Music Festival, Vienna Spring Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Hong Kong Festival, Taipei Music Festival, Taipei Arts Festival, the International Rachmaninoff Music Festival in Moscow, the Janácˇek Music Festival in the Czech Republic, the Chopin Festivals in Austria, Czech Republic, and Poland, various festivals in Romania, and the Auckland International Piano Festival. He has participated at many internationally and historically significant events, including his performances as the designated soloist of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of Turkey and the designated soloist for the Macau-China Reunification Celebration Ceremony. He was especially honored to be invited by the Chinese government to give a solo performance at the opening ceremony of the World Expo in Shanghai. In addition to awards from various international piano competitions, Chen has been the recipient of various distinguished awards and honors, such as the Bösendorfer Prize in Vienna and the Albert Roussel Prize in Paris. Chen is a best-selling classical musician in Greater China with CD recordings on various labels, and he received the Taiwan Millennium Best Artistic Performance Award as well as the Golden Melody Awards (the “Grammys” of Taiwan) for Best Performance and for Best Album. Chen is particularly passionate about premiering new compositions by Chinese composers and introducing contemporary Western classical compositions to the Chinese, acting as the musical bridge between East and West. In between tours, Chen is ardent about promoting music education and performance opportunities for underprivileged and disabled youth. Visit rueibinchen.com.

debuts with the Residentie Orkest and the Vancouver, Tenerife, Charleston, and Israel symphony orchestras; and return visits to the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Tivoli Festival, following his highly successful debuts there. Last season Perry made debuts with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, the Zürcher Kammerorchester, the Florida Orchestra, and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra as well as making return visits to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias, the Royal Danish Opera, and the Round Top Festival (for the opening concert). Other recent engagements include the London Philharmonic, the Singapore Symphony, the Japan Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the Australian Youth and Tasmanian Symphony orchestras. Perry recently concluded a two-year period as Associate Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, in which he redesigned and spearheaded the orchestra’s outreach and educational programs. He also maintains a close relationship with the State Hermitage Orchestra of Russia. Other orchestras he has worked with include the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic Orchestra, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra (Moscow), the Queensland Orchestra, and Staatskapelle Weimar. His first CD (Violin Concertos of Barber and Korngold with Alexander Gilman and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra) was released in January 2012 on Oehms Classics and received the prestigious Diapason d’Or award. Born in Hong Kong in 1982, Perry graduated from Yale University in Comparative Literature, where he studied with noted literary scholar Michael Holquist. As an undergraduate
at Yale, he was Music Director of the Saybrook Orchestra and the Opera Theater of Yale College, leading productions of Die Zauberflöte, Così fan tutte, Giulio Cesare, Four Saints in Three Acts, and Turn of the Screw. He also developed an abiding interest for music of the Renaissance and the Baroque, regularly leading the Yale Collegium Musicum from the harpsichord. He subsequently studied conducting under Swiss pedagogue Gustav Meier at the Peabody Institute. He was a prizewinner at the Mitropoulos Competition in Athens and received a commendation from the Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau for his international musical accomplishments. His current mentors include Edo de Waart and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Founded in 1975, the 100-voice ANGELES CHORALE is a volunteer organization of auditioned, professional-level choral singers who, under the leadership and vision of Artistic Director Dr. John Sutton, rehearse and perform in the greater Los Angeles area. Its mission is to perform world-class music that will enrich the lives of the ethnically diverse community of music lovers who call Southern California home. The Chorale’s 39th concert season, titled “Conversations of the Soul,” took both the audience and choir on a stirring, musical journey of hope, faith, and love. The Angeles Chorale has performed with many local orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Glendale Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, Pasadena Symphony, and American Youth Symphony. Recent groundbreaking performance highlights include appearing with Barbra Streisand when the singer brought her show “Back to Brooklyn” to the Hollywood Bowl and with Julie Andrews at Walt Disney Concert Hall for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Holiday Sing-Along. Chorale voices can also be heard in many Hollywood movie trailer choral scores, including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Warner Bros.), Tangled (Disney), Meet the Parents: Little Fockers (Paramount Pictures), No Ordinary Family promos (an ABC fall season series), Prince of Persia (Disney), and a McDonald’s national commercial.
