Center Theatre Group Corporate Spotlight: Michael Jung from Walt Disney Imagineering Disney theme parks, resorts and cruise lines feature hundreds of live, family shows. Full-scale theatrical productions like Mickey and the Magical Map (at Disneyland Resort) and Finding Nemo – The Musical (at Walt Disney World Resort) are favorites with Disney’s littlest guests, but they also thrill their adult companions and remind them that many first experiences of great storytelling come from the wonderful world of Disney. For more than seven years, Disney divisions, including Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment, a group of theatrical artists who strive to bring their talent, expertise and experience to the creation of world-class family entertainment, have partnered with Center Theatre Group. Walt Disney Imagineering vice president of theatrical development and CTG Corporate Circle member Michael Jung shares CTG’s vision for creating innovative theatre and reaching out to new audiences. Q. Your background is in theatre. Can you talk about your experience and how that relates to your partnership with CTG? Walt Disney Imagineering’s relationship with CTG is especially meaningful to me, as this is where I got my professional start. Working at CTG under Gordon Davidson as an assistant director, mainstage production coordinator, and eventually, the associate producer for the New Work Festival and the New Play Development programs not only fostered my respect and passion for theatrical development but allowed me to grow and to be exposed to some of the seminal new work in American theatre. Q. Recently, CTG’s board president Bill Ahmanson commented that Los Angeles is “world-renowned as the entertainment epicenter and yet California ranks dead last in state funding for the arts.” Why is it important for companies to step in to fill this gap? We live in a precarious time for the future of the arts, making it paramount for individuals, corporations and private sector funding to support creative enrichment and growth in the arts. For Los Angeles to continue to be relevant in the world cultural scene, it must draw world-class artists and support experimental work and creative fusion. Fortunately Los Angeles has a thriving creative community, and many companies like Disney believe in assuring our creative vibrancy.

Q. Disney has been a supporter of CTG for more than seven years. Why is it that our organizations and missions align so well? Walt Disney Imagineering believes in the power of creativity and imagination to change the world and wants to ensure everyone is exposed to art. Every year we reach out to local and international theatrical companies, foundations and institutions to support exemplary work in an effort to assure live entertainment stays a vital part of our experience for generations to come. Just like CTG, Disney hopes to share our resources to make lasting, positive change in our community, to promote creativity, and to use entertainment to change lives. Q. Disney shows have graced CTG stages in the past. Can you tell us a little about how that will continue this season? It is always thrilling to see Disney Theatrical Group productions like Mary Poppins at the Ahmanson Theatre. For me, it is a little bit like coming home. This season, I am especially excited that Disney’s Tony Award-winning production of Peter and the Starcatcher will come to the Ahmanson. This show is exceptional. Written by Rick Elice and directed by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, this delightful show blends incredible wit, virtuosic performance and tremendous imagination into a thoroughly entertaining and unique theatrical experience. Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Gives $1 Million to Ensemble Work
Special Thanks to Artistic Director’s Circle Members for Supporting CTG
Center Theatre Group has been awarded a four-year, $1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The grant will make possible a program focusing on collaboratively created contemporary work from ensembles, devisers and writers, supporting the creative arc from commissioning through development and production.
The Artistic Director’s Circle, founded by Brindell and Milton Gottlieb, is comprised of individuals supporting specific areas of Michael Ritchie’s artistic vision for Center Theatre Group. The following individuals have made commitments of $100,000 and above.
The program will build on the work generated by a multiyear 2009 Mellon Foundation grant supporting the development of collective contemporary work. Increasingly part of the regional theatre scene, collective contemporary work combines performance, technology, imagery, music, heightened text and often, but not exclusively, a nonlinear narrative.

The 2009 Mellon grant supported projects such as Rude Mechs’ I’ve Never Been So Happy (Kirk Douglas Theatre, 2011), Daniel Alexander Jones’ Jomama Jones: Radiate (DouglasPlus, 2012) and Guillermo Calderón’s Neva (a collaborative tour presented at Upstairs@KDT in June and then at South Coast Repertory and La Jolla Playhouse). Projects currently in development include Hope by Evelina Fernandez and the Latino Theatre Company, Western Society by Gob Squad, Party People by Universes, Straight White Men by Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company, and Lester Bangs by Erik Jensen and Jessica Blank. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a private philanthropic institution that makes grants on a selective basis in five core program areas: higher education, information technology, art history and conservation, performing arts, and conservation and the environment. The foundation’s performing arts program focuses on achieving long-term results by providing multiyear grants to leading organizations in the disciplines of music, theatre and dance. LAUSD Partners With CTG for Arts Education Program “We can’t meet the needs of all learners without the arts,” says Dr. Steven J. McCarthy, K-12 Arts Coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School District and Professor of Arts Integration at the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education.
“We have visual learners, we have auditory learners, and we have students that need to get up and move about in order to fully comprehend the information and form their own opinions,” he says. “Arts in every classroom can make this happen.” In the 2013–2014 school year, LAUSD’s new Arts at the Core plan will bring the district one step closer to realizing this vision. The exciting program incorporates the arts into every subject area, including English, math, social studies and science. As the leader who oversees arts instruction for LAUSD’s 640,000 students, McCarthy will guide the plan’s implementation. Arts organizations like Center Theatre Group will be powerful partners in embracing this change, he says. “We have exceptional arts teachers in our district but do not have the resources to hire enough credentialed arts teachers to fully meet the needs of every child in our huge school district, the second largest in the nation. And we don’t always have the financial resources to keep our technology current. So we partner with arts organizations that have the most up-to-date technology, and we collaborate with teaching artists who are working professionals in their art form and knowledgeable in the art of instruction.”

Exposure to high-quality artworks and the professionals who create them gives students a lens for looking at the world, analyzing problems, and developing and defending their opinions, McCarthy says. Moreover, arts instruction provides the chance to build teams, learn work-life skills, and think critically and creatively, all important aptitudes for the 21st century. But partnerships with arts organizations like CTG go beyond providing instructional support in the classroom, McCarthy says. Seeing a matinee at one of CTG’s theatres can make a difference in students’ lives. “It’s important for youth to see what the world has to offer. ‘This exists, and it’s within your reach.’” n

How I Spent My Vacation Summer Theatre Research Sparks New Teaching Practices this summer, five educators spent their break discovering ways to inspire their theatre teaching practices through Center Theatre Group’s Theatre Educator Fellowship program. Funded by JPMorgan & Chase Co., the program grants teachers up to $5,000 to pursue their own courses of study related to issues or challenges they face in the classroom. “We ended the day with an inspirational lecture by Maxine Greene. She is a true role model for aesthetic teaching. I loved her belief that art changes lives when encountered and experienced fully. She said that it should develop a sense of questioning and help us understand ambiguity. Living with ambiguity is the best way to live life because it keeps you seeking and alive to possibilities.” –Elizabeth Rubino, an elementary educator who studied drama for special education students in New York.
“[I took a workshop] given by Teatro Experimental Fontibón, a Colombian-based group that addresses bullying and school violence with Theatre of the Oppressed techniques. Their philosophy emphasizes prevention, community building and developing emotional intelligence to make it harder for bullying to happen in the first place, all with theatre, of course.” –Juan Carrillo, who traveled to Bogotá, Colombia, to study Theatre of the Oppressed.
This year’s crop of talented educators traveled as far as Stratford-upon-Avon to delve into their research questions, which explored topics ranging from using improvisation to reduce bullying to bringing Theatre of the Oppressed techniques into the classroom to increase student comprehension and parent involvement. Now, they return to their classrooms with ideas to reinvigorate their practice. Here are some highlights from their journeys.
“From Friday evening to Sunday morning, the group of us listened, wrote, danced, improvised, wrote, yelled, cried, laughed and wrote some more. … I noted every exercise we did, inspired to think about how I will bring this work to my students: what I think will work with them, what I would leave out, what I would tweak to make more meaningful.” –Melissa Weber Bales, who attended a writing workshop at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, Calif.
“This atmosphere of committed and excited theatre teachers expressing their passions about Shakespeare has been so enlivening for me. In June, fans of George Takei and young supporters of Center Theatre Group met the Star Trek star, social media personality and theatre artist at an event for The Fringe @ CTG. During the program, Artistic Director Michael Ritchie interviewed the special guest and longtime CTG supporter about his life in the theatre. Takei described how his childhood and professional life recently collided in Allegiance, a show inspired by his internment during World War II. The musical premiered at The Old Globe in San Diego last year and heads to Broadway in 2014. Allegiance follows a Japanese family in the weeks after Pearl Harbor, when the U.S. government moves them from their California home to a Wyoming internment camp. Takei, who was five when he entered the Rohwer War Relocation Center, hopes the musical encourages people to learn from past mistakes and to prevent history from repeating itself. Many in the Japanese-American community have become personally invested in the project, yet the story’s themes of love, family and redemption are universal. For Takei, sharing the production with diverse audiences has confirmed the power of theatre to bring people together, encourage compassion and promote empathy.
Hosted by CTG board member Sue Tsao at Duplex on Third, the event attracted more than 85 guests eager to meet Takei and to learn more about The Fringe, a group of young professionals in their 20s, 30s and 40s who love theatre and believe in its importance in Los Angeles. As Fringe President Rebecka Biejo explained, Fringe membership dues support CTG programs for new plays and emerging artists. “We are the next generation of theatre-goers investing in the next generation of theatre-makers,” added Nichole Curtis, a member of The Fringe’s leadership board. Ritchie thanked The Fringe for its role in making sure stories like Takei’s continue to be shared with new audiences. Inspired by Takei’s passion for theatre, his incredible story and The Fringe’s mission, many guests decided to join the young professionals group. “Frankly, I wanted The Fringe in my life,” said Clint Schaff, one of the group’s newest members. “After years of involvement in youth and high school theatre, I’ve truly missed the theatre, and this group gives me the opportunity to see great plays regularly, while also driving awareness, giving back and meeting new friends across Los Angeles.” n

THE PICKLES by Emily Means
BY THE TIME Humor Abuse’s Lorenzo Pisoni was six years old, he was a contracted member of his parents’ Pickle Family Circus. Born and raised a Pickle, he was exposed to the inner workings of a world many of us can only dream about, a world in which, as Lorenzo says, “There are no limits. You can do whatever you think of.”
considered saying, ‘Forget it.’ There was some intense — maybe insane — group pride that enabled us to do things that none of us individually would have ever thought of attempting.” The Pickle Family Circus was an all-inclusive celebration, founded by two visionaries who fell in love — not only with the circus, but also with each other.
Lorenzo’s parents, Pickle co-founders Larry Pisoni and Peggy Snider, met while working at The San Francisco Mime Troupe in the early 1970s. They began juggling together, performing and passing the hat in Union Square. Together, they gathered a band of diverse performers — unicyclists, acrobats, jugglers, musicians and clowns — and the Pickle Family Circus opened in May 1975 in the gym of John O’Connell High School in San Francisco’s Mission District.
Larry and Peggy married, and Lorenzo was literally born into the circus; he grew as the circus did. With a large extended family of civic-minded artists, he was one of several Pickle kids who spent their childhoods on the road in backstage “tent cities,” learning tricks of the trade from a “kiddy corral” that was watched over by whoever was not onstage. “Everyone in the company was always having a good time,” Lorenzo remembers. “I think that is maybe the rarest thing I experienced as a child. I don’t know many kids who not only have a firsthand knowledge of what their parents do on a dayto-day basis, but also get to see their parents enjoying what they do — see any adults enjoying what they do.”
From the beginning, the Pickles made deliberate decisions that set them apart from the traditional American circus. The Pickles staged performances in a single ring, without circus animals, and on an intimate scale that embraced and empowered audience members. Peggy remembers, “It was a way of leveling so that there was not really a vast difference between the audience and circus performer. It was a way of saying, ‘If you want to do something, you can do it. We are not extraordinary individuals. We are just like you.’” The Pickles also embraced the communities from which their audiences came. Their first performance benefited Latino daycare centers in San Francisco, and up and down the West Coast they collaborated with senior centers, food pantries, and many other organizations. With all the spirit of a neighborhood circus thrown together in somebody’s backyard, the Pickles relied on more than just the talent of its performers, who were responsible for every aspect of their business. Everyone pitched in to keep the show running, whether it meant assembling bleachers or hanging canvas, building props or personally mentoring sponsoring groups. Terry Lorant, Pickle performer and photographer, reflected on this allfor-one, one-for-all philosophy in an interview with San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll: “We never
The adults were having such a good time, in fact, that Lorenzo could not wait to participate. “He wanted to do it all,” Larry remembers. “He wanted to do the acrobatics and the juggling. He wanted to clown; he wanted to play music.” At age two, Lorenzo began going onstage during intermission. His earliest acts were, according to his mom, “adorable” imitations of what he saw the adults do: wholehearted attempts at tumbling, clowning and juggling. When Larry left the Pickles in 1987, Lorenzo inherited a strong sense of responsibility for the circus his father helped start. Whenever he could, the 11-yearold inserted himself into the roles his father would have performed, both onstage and off. “If they would have let me drive the bleacher truck, I probably would have jumped at the chance,” he remembers. Lorenzo continued to perform with the Pickle Family Circus throughout his teenage years, even while attending high school full time. School introduced him to a world of possibilities outside the family business:

“I think that’s when I realized, ‘Oh, I’m not going to do circus for the rest of my life.’ Although I never would have admitted it then, because it was my identity.” Matriculation at Vassar College across the country in upstate New York meant a fresh start for the Pickle kid. He chose to keep his unique upbringing a secret, but his anonymity was short-lived: a director called his apartment and left a message on the answering machine asking whether he wanted to be ringmaster of a circus in Tokyo. His roommates intercepted the call, and Lorenzo was forced to admit the truth. They were incredulous until he did a backflip. After graduation, Lorenzo worked as a ringmaster in a Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show before moving to New York to pursue an acting career. After many years of success, he decided to resurrect an old idea for a show, one that had begun as a couple of anecdotes he and fellow Pickle kid Jonah Hoyle (son of Pickle clown Geoff Hoyle) had contributed to a one-night benefit act they performed as teenagers alongside their dads. They were anecdotes about growing up in the circus and being “abused in the name of humor.” At Vassar, Lorenzo and Jonah had merged versions of these “humor abuse” monologues with old Pickle routines and a “performed history” of clowning. When Lorenzo approached Jonah about reviving the piece, Jonah declined: “Lorenzo’s story was the story of the Pickles… I told him that he should make it a solo show. And that he should make it as personal and as honest as he could.” With the help of director, writer and Vassar friend Erica Schmidt, Lorenzo set out to do just that. Erica focused on the autobiographical elements, helping Lorenzo to see what was already there: the story of a father and a son. The show was produced by Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City Center — with Larry in the audience.
“I don’t know that he quite knew how to process it,” says Lorenzo. “I really do think [the piece is] loving and celebratory… He did a really great job as a parent, and he’s a great clown.” “I am just incredibly proud,” Larry says of Lorenzo’s performance in Humor Abuse. “I think it is really quite a wonderful gift. It is what I had to pass on to him, and I did.” During performances of Humor Abuse, Lorenzo sometimes hears an audience member laugh and knows that there is a Pickle in the house. It is the laughter of someone who has been reminded of something forgotten. Lorenzo is happy to remind us: “I love that the Pickles can live on in some way. I love that I’m using the circus’ original backdrop in the show, and I love that I’m using props that my parents built and used in the ring. It’s a little walk down memory lane for a lot of people.” Lorenzo included. ▪

MICHAEL RITCHIE (Artistic Director) is in his eighth season as Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Director, and has led over 130 productions to the Ahmanson, Taper and Douglas stages since his arrival in 2005. From 1996 to 2004 Michael was the Producer of the Williamstown Theatre Festival and prior to that he was a Production Stage Manager in NYC. At CTG, he premiered six musicals that moved to Broadway — The Drowsy Chaperone (which won 13 Tony Award nominations), Curtains (eight Tony nominations) 13, 9 to 5: The Musical, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Leap of Faith. He has produced 33 world premieres including the musicals Minsky’s, Venice and Sleeping Beauty Wakes, and the plays Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (a Pulitzer Prize finalist that also moved to Broadway), Water & Power and Yellow Face, and he presented a broad range of plays and musicals ranging from Dead End to The Black Rider to Edward Scissorhands to blockbusters such as God of Carnage, Mary Poppins, Jersey Boys and August: Osage County. In addition, Michael inaugurated CTG’s New Play Production Program, designed to foster the development and production of new work. EDWARD L. RADA (Managing Director) returned to Center Theatre Group in 2011 after previously serving as CTG’s Chief Financial Officer for 12 years (1996 – 2008). Rada spent three years (2008 – 2011) as President of the Music Center Foundation, a non-profit corporation that holds and invests the endowment and reserve funds for the Music Center and its resident companies (including CTG). Prior to his years at CTG, he was the Director of Finance at The Old Globe in San Diego and principal of Rada & Associates, an accounting firm that specialized in entertainment-related
non-profit organizations and theatrical productions. He is a graduate of Occidental College in Los Angeles with numerous post-graduate coursework and credentials. He currently serves on the board of directors for Entertainment Industry Foundation, Theatre @ Boston Court, and United Support of Artists for Africa/USA for Africa, among other affiliations. He also serves on the board of trustees for the pension, health and welfare and 401(k) plans of I.A.T.S.E. Local 33 Stagehands Union. DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 23rd season at CTG. Previously, he managed Broadway and touring productions including Tru, Born Yesterday, The Gospel at Colonus, Annie, A Chorus Line, Working, The Wiz, and Legends!, which premiered at the Ahmanson Theatre in 1986 and starred Mary Martin and Carol Channing. Doug is a member of the Achievement Hall of Fame of Chagrin Falls Schools in Ohio and a graduate of Albion College. He is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. In May 2013 Doug received The Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award. KELLEY KIRKPATRICK (Associate Artistic Director). Since arriving at CTG in 2005, Kelley has produced over 40 productions at the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre, many of which have gone on to future lives on Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond. In addition to producing shows across CTG’s three stages, he has had the privilege of collaborating with numerous local and national artists to commission and develop new works. GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre — including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989 Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
