A NOTE FROM CHRISTOPHER KOELSCH
Welcome to LA Opera Dear Friends: Throughout LA Opera’s 2021/22 season, we are celebrating our long-awaited return to the stage with some of the grandest and most magnificent works of the operatic repertoire. Wagner’s affective Tannhäuser, heard here only for the second time in the company’s history, is not only one of the most enthralling, soul-stirring works of the canon, its technical challenges test the mettle and ambition of every opera company that undertakes it. I am supremely confident that the outstanding members of the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus and the cast of internationally renowned soloists are exceptionally well equipped to meet that challenge. I am also delighted to revisit our critically acclaimed 2007 production, dynamically renewed this season with stage direction by Louisa Muller, choreography by Aszure Barton and designs by Gottfried Pilz. It has been eight years since we last presented any of Wagner’s music dramas on our stage, and it is always thrilling to hear these glorious works under the baton of Music Director James Conlon, who has conducted no less than eight of the composer’s operas with LA Opera. I am elated that James will continue to cement his indelible legacy in Los Angeles for many years to come, as he has extended his contract with the company through the end of the 2024/25 season. On a bittersweet note, Grant Gershon, our Chorus Director since 2007 and Resident Conductor since 2012, has decided to step down from both of those roles at the end of the season so that he can devote more time to the Los Angeles Master Chorale and to his busy conducting career. We are indebted to Grant for his many years of dedication to the company and for his singular gifts as a musician. These have been in ample display through hundreds of distinguished choral performances as well as in his command on the podium of a wide variety of repertoire. Thankfully, we will have the opportunity to admire his extraordinary work with the LA Opera Chorus throughout the remainder of the season. Our remarkable cast is led by Issachah Savage in his highly anticipated role debut as Tannhäuser. He made his house debut in 2017 as Narraboth in Salome and has rapidly come to international recognition with his rare combination of vocal power and beauty. He is joined by two artists whom we welcome in their house debuts: soprano Sara Jakubiak, making her role debut as Elisabeth after winning acclaim in other roles in the Wagner and Strauss repertoire, and Yulia Matochkina, one of Russia’s foremost mezzo-sopranos, who sings the role of Venus. We also welcome back to our stage several LA Opera audience favorites, including Lucas Meachem as Wolfram and Morris Robinson as Hermann. Productions of this magnitude would simply not be possible without the generosity of our most devoted supporters. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to an anonymous donor who provided exceptional support to produce this work. I am also grateful to a dedicated group of LA Opera board members who joined together in underwriting this production: Leslie Dorman, Peter and Diane Gray, Keith Leonard, Cornelia Haag-Molkenteller, Linda Shaheen, Heinrich Schelbert, Marc Stern and Chris Walker. Finally, a generous gift from The Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Next Generation Artist Award is underwriting the appearance of Issachah Savage on our stage. It is with great sadness that LA Opera mourns the loss of a number of its beloved board members, including two of our most monumental leaders, Paul Musco and Warner Henry. LA Opera is dedicating the 2021/22 season to the memory of Paul and Warner and the many others who have passed away during this challenging time. On behalf of the entire company, I extend our grateful appreciation to all of you, our audience, who believe in the power of opera to rejuvenate and strengthen the human spirit. Sincerely,
Christopher Koelsch SEBASTIAN PAUL AND MARYBELLE MUSCO PRESIDENT AND CEO

A NOTE ON TANNHÄUSER FROM MUSIC DIRECTOR JAMES CONLON
“There is an optimistic version of romanticism in which what the romantics feel is that by going forward, by expanding our nature, by destroying the obstacles in our path…we are liberating ourselves…and allowing our infinite nature to soar to…greater heights and to become wider, deeper, freer, more vital, more like the divinity towards which it strives. But there is another, more pessimistic version of this…a notion that although we individuals seek to liberate ourselves…there is something in the dark depths of the unconscious or of history… which frustrates our dearest wishes.” (Isaiah Berlin, The Roots of Romanticism)

TANNHÄUSER continued from pg. 8
Act Two of Tannhäuser culminates in a song contest; Wagner's later Die Meistersinger revolves around a similar contest.
Dichotomy and inner struggle fueled the muses of the 19th century. Richard Wagner harnessed those muses and changed the artistic world. His music dramas thrived on those contradictions and struggles and left us with an artistic legacy that provoked and engendered other polemics and conflicts. Musicians, poets, artists, critics and opera audiences have adored, detested, deified, condemned, admired and rejected Wagner, his music and his prose. His person, and the sometimes-violent reactions his works provoke, are extensions of those conflicting versions of romanticism to which Berlin refers. The vast cosmic canvas upon which his works were conceived is mirrored by the tremors these very works caused. And yet, though this composer wrote more about the theory and practice of his art than any other in our history— and has perhaps been written about more than any other composer—his actual dramatic material is remarkably simple. I mean this not in the sense that it isn’t complex, but that, through the repeated use of archetypes and themes, he revisits several issues over the course of ten operas.
The Male Protagonist Wagner viewed himself as a misunderstood genius who, due to his superior gifts, was a hero; as such, he was also an outsider. Each of Wagner’s male protagonists is an outsider in his own way. Each comes from a different place from the world in which he finds himself. Some dare, like Adam, to eat forbidden fruit or tempt the gods: Tannhäuser embraces the pagan revelations of Venusberg; the Dutchman makes a pact with the devil; Lohengrin literally comes from another (spiritual) world. Tannhäuser lives a Faustian struggle. Unable to integrate spiritual and sensual love, he ventures out of his society to Venusberg, where he feels that he experiences
erotic love in a way none of his acquaintances have. Imbued now with a message, he feels simultaneously superior and rejected when he returns to society. When he sings his song of praise of Venus, he is an artist revealing a “new unheard-of music” He is now outsider, artist and genius. He is a projection of Wagner’s image of himself. So is Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, another young hero who brings new music to the world. Unlike Tannhäuser, who defies an opposing father figure to do so (represented by Landgrave Hermann and, more distantly, the Pope), Walther is adopted by a “good” father figure in the form of Hans Sachs.
The Female Protagonist Wagner’s heroines embody the concept of the “self-sacrificing eternal feminine”—a masculine projection. They are usually the bearer of the composer’s most potent cosmic force, Redemptive Love, and they almost always prove their love by dying for their men. (The notable exception is Eva in Die Meistersinger, a comedy.) All are virginal at the beginning of the opera and most remain so (excepting Brünnhilde and, perhaps, Isolde). Venus, on the other hand, represents the absolute triumph of eroticism. The splitting of the feminine principle into competing sensual and spiritual components—represented by Venus and Elisabeth—is emblematic of the 19th century’s inability or unwillingness to harmonize these seemingly conflicting forces. Wagner later revisited this idea in Parsifal, not with two characters but by incorporating them both, in unreconciled form, in the person of Kundry.
Recurring Ideas A medieval singing contest is at the center of both Tannhäuser and Die Meistersinger, operas whose subjects are continued on pg. 27

PERFORMANCE UNDERWRITER
The Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Next Generation Artist Award Piera Barbaglia Shaheen had a passion for opera and cared deeply about the welfare of young people beginning their careers. Her generosity of spirit is honored in a fund created by a generous gift from Linda and David Shaheen. The Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Next Generation Artist Award supports rising performers appearing at LA Opera, for whom a principal role at a prominent company can be a major career breakthrough. Issachah Savage’s highly anticipated role debut as Tannhäuser in this production is made possible through the Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Next Generation Artist Award. The program previously supported the standout performances of Sean Panikkar as Issachah Savage Gandhi in Satyagraha, Lisette Oropesa as Eurydice in Orpheus and Eurydice and J’Nai Bridges as Nefertiti in Akhnaten. Named for Mr. Shaheen’s mother, the program promotes the ideals of this successful woman who was a strong proponent of education, built and ran a multinational business and was the center of a home infused with classical music and opera. Piera was born in America to Italian immigrants. Due to widespread discrimination against foreigners, her mother moved the family back to Italy when Piera was only two years old.
Instilled with her mother’s strong work ethic and commitment to education, she earned her degree in economics from a top university in northern Italy. As World War II raged around her, she joined the resistance efforts of the American underground to battle the fascists. After the war, she returned to America, furthering her education, marrying, raising a family, building her business, and becoming a generous contributor to her community. She deeply believed in the power of education as a principal force for change, says David Shaheen, and through her generosity she provided college scholarships for over 2,000 children of her employees. She passed these ideals onto her son and daughter-in-law, who created The David & Linda Shaheen Foundation, supporting LA Opera’s education programming, scholarships for inner-city youth, as well as numerous arts, education and reproductive health programs. The legacy of Piera is also honored through the recent naming by Linda and David of the Alliance Piera Barbaglia Shaheen Health Services Academy. LA Opera extends its gratitude to Linda and David Shaheen for honoring such a remarkable woman and bringing the next generation of artists to the LA Opera stage.
Comparing Scores: What You're Hearing Today Every time Tannhäuser is produced, a choice must be made between competing versions of the opera, all of them legitimate, in my opinion. The Dresden version (which is actually two essentially similar versions from 1845 and 1847) features a formal closed overture that is well known to concertgoers. The 1861 Paris version vastly expands the scene in Venusberg and the role of Venus, and adds the ballet (Bacchanale), which flows directly from the shortened overture. The 1875 Vienna version restores the original Dresden overture, recomposes the beginning of Act One, then continues on the same as the Paris version. There are two sides to the discussion of the Paris version. It gives greater weight to the role of Venus. On
the other hand, Wagner’s musical language had developed during the 15 years that separate the Dresden and Paris versions and the stylistic break is evident. Some feel that this is advantageous, arguing that the enhanced chromatic harmony of the Paris version better represents the magically erotic world of Venusberg. For the 1961 Bayreuth Festival, the composer’s grandson Wieland Wagner began Tannhäuser with the Paris version, continuing through the end of the Bacchanale; he then reverted to the Dresden version. This solution has met with a great deal of critical favor and ultimately, with small differences, this is what we have adopted on this occasion. —Music Director James Conlon

SYNOPSIS
Act Two of Tannhäuser
ACT ONE
ACT THREE
In the Venusberg, magical abode of Venus, the minnesinger Tannhäuser halfheartedly praises the goddess of beauty, who for more than a year has bestowed her love upon him. Venus promises greater revels when Tannhäuser asks for his freedom, but she curses his hopes of salvation when he longs for the simple pleasures and pains of earthly life. In response he calls on the Virgin Mary, and the Venusberg vanishes. Tannhäuser finds himself near the castle of the Wartburg, where passing pilgrims inspire him to laud the wonders of God. Horns announce the Landgrave Hermann and his knights, who recognize their long-lost comrade and invite him to the castle. One of them, Wolfram von Eschenbach, reminds Tannhäuser that in the past his singing won the love of Elisabeth, the landgrave’s beautiful niece. On hearing her name, Tannhäuser embraces and joins his companions.
Several months later, Wolfram discovers Elisabeth at evening prayer before a shrine in the Wartburg valley. She searches among approaching pilgrims for Tannhäuser, but in vain. Broken, she prays to the Virgin to receive her soul in heaven. Wolfram, alone, asks the evening star to guide her on her way. Tannhäuser now staggers in wearily to relate that despite his abject penitence, the Pope decreed he could as soon be forgiven as the papal staff could break into flower. The desperate man calls to Venus, but she vanishes when Tannhäuser is reminded again by Wolfram of Elisabeth, whose funeral procession now nears. Tannhäuser collapses, dying, by her bier. A chorus of pilgrims enters, recounting a miracle: the Pope’s staff, which they bear forward, has blossomed. Synopsis by John W. Freeman, reprinted courtesy of Opera News.
ACT TWO In the Hall of Song in the Wartburg, Elisabeth hails the place where she first heard Tannhäuser’s voice. Wolfram reunites the happy pair, who sings God’s praises. As guests arrive, the landgrave promises Elisabeth’s hand to the winner of a contest of love songs. Wolfram delivers an idealized tribute to Elisabeth, whom he too has loved. Tannhäuser, his soul still possessed by Venus, counters with a frenzied hymn to the pleasures of worldly love. Everyone is shocked, but Elisabeth protects Tannhäuser from harm, securing her uncle’s pardon for her beloved on the condition that he make a pilgrimage to Rome to seek absolution.
SAFETY FIRST! • Please wear your mask at all times inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. If you need to remove it for any reason, please step outside the building. • Please maintain social distancing (minimum of six feet) in all outdoor lines, escalators, stairs, elevators and lobbies. • Hand sanitizer stations have been placed inside the theater and across The Music Center campus.
In fond memory of Tara Colburn, supertitles are underwritten by Dunard Fund USA.

The Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program supports the future of opera by discovering and developing the talents of highly gifted young artists to become the stars of tomorrow. Since the company’s inception, LA Opera has been committed to nurturing a resident ensemble of young singers who would benefit from long-term professional development. The Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program, which builds on the success of the company’s earlier, highly respected Resident Artist Program, has the goal of developing the talents of exceptionally gifted young artists to become performers of potentially international stature, whose first loyalty would be to LA Opera.

LA OPERA CONNECTS
Composer Carla Lucero and The Three Women of Jerusalem Carla Lucero is breaking boundaries. The world premiere of her opera The Three Women of Jerusalem (Las Tres Mujeres de Jerusalén), LA Opera’s 2022 community opera production at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, will mark several firsts. It’s the first opera by a female composer (she’s also the librettist) and the first Spanishlanguage opera to be commissioned for the Cathedral. The family-friendly opera will premiere on March 19, 2022, with James Conlon conducting hundreds of amateur singers, dancers and instrumentalists of all ages, along with LA Opera’s professional soloists and musicians. Singers from around the world will also sing along (virtually) with the congregational hymns. These global performances will be shown inside the Cathedral, bringing everyone together. The opera depicts the moment when Jesus pauses to comfort weeping women along the way to the crucifixion. (This event is commemorated in Roman Catholic services as the Eighth Station of the Cross.) Ultimately it’s all about hope and compassion, something we all need after the past year. And it’s suitable for audiences of any faith (or none at all); its themes of compassion and community are universal. We asked the composer to talk about her new opera. The Bible only has one sentence about these women. How did you fill out the story? Yes, there is little information about them. They weep for Jesus when they witness His pain and understand, on some level, that there has been no crime committed that could justify such torture and humiliation. Jesus understands their weeping as an acknowledgement of their own human frailty. In essence, the tears they shed are tears of grief for the darker side of human nature, something that we all carry inside of ourselves to varying degrees. I introduce the women at the beginning of the opera, as they shop in the marketplace. This gives the audience a bit of backstory on their individual characters. I also give them names. I don’t want to give too much away
about the main characters, but let’s just say that they end up living up to these names: Sacrifice, Love and Purpose. What do you hope that audiences will take away from the opera? I hope that audiences identify with the tests of faith and conscience that the three women in the opera face. In the end, following our conscience is having faith in the goodness within us and acting accordingly. This is a universal concept to me, and not specific to any religious belief. Through empathy comes tangible goodness and change for the better, if we put away our fears. The Passion can be uplifting and motivating. I really hope this comes through in The Three Women. Could you talk a bit about having the piece performed in Spanish? It’s a passionate and beautiful language that I am proud to have as part of my heritage. I have written operas in both Spanish and English, and honestly, both languages work wonderfully when they are set to music. Spanish is softer on the tongue and on the ear with rich and round vowel sounds. Spanish is not my first language, so I enlisted the assistance of an amazing poet and translator, Dr. Rita Urquijo-Ruiz, who is also a theater artist. She translated my original libretto from English to Spanish very carefully, so that it would register culturally and poetically with the audience. I hope that the Spanish speaking communities of Los Angeles and beyond will accept this as a love letter from me to them. Learn more at LAOpera.org/CommunityOpera.

TANNHÄUSER
continued from pg. 10 art and love. The young heroes of those operas usher in a new age of art, though their fates are different. Parsifal will relive the erotic/spiritual struggle as Tannhäuser does, though he will encounter and resolve them in a different way. Redemptive Love may be the proposed panacea for the universe, but we, and the world, have to endure suffering first. Renunciation is, perhaps, the antidote to that other ubiquitous force: desire. Tannhäuser must journey to Rome to atone for his sinful embrace of pagan delights. In Tristan und Isolde, it is desire— not hope—that springs eternal. It can only be satisfied through death. If the Ring has any protagonist at all, it is not a person nor a god, but a cosmology that demonstrates that desire, in the form of lust for power, drives human (and godly) actions and leads inevitably to universal cataclysm. It is only through the renunciation of this desire that redemption, rebirth and the restoration of the world’s natural order can occur. Big themes, one and all. Dated? Perhaps. Politically incorrect in our day? Possibly. Irrelevant? Not in the slightest. Tannhäuser, second in the series of ten great Wagnerian music dramas, encompasses everything Berlin describes in his “pessimistic” version of Romanticism: Tannhäuser never triumphs, Elisabeth dies. But, to my mind, by experiencing this drama in the opera house, we actually live a part of the “optimistic” version to which Berlin refers and allow our “infinite nature to soar.”

NO RUSTLING PAGES, no killing trees.... Of all the innovations to have come out of the pandemic, the new Performances program platform, accessed on any digital device, may be least likely to disappear in the foreseeable future. Not only has its time come—it was long overdue. Performances provides the programs for 20 SoCal performingarts organizations, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Ahmanson to San Diego Opera, where the app made its debut.
WHAT’S ON What’s coming at a glance with ticket information.
The touchless platform provides cast and player bios, donor and season updates and arts-centric features. Audiences receive a link and code word that instantly activate the app; QR codes are posted, too. Screens go dark when curtains rise and return with the house lights. Updates—repertory changes, understudy substitutions, significant donations—can be made right up to showtime, no inserts necessary. Other features include video and audio streams, translations and expanded biographies.
For those who consider printed programs keepsakes, a limited number, as well as commemorative issues for special events, will continue to be produced. Collectibles! Meanwhile, there will be less deforestation, consumption of petroleum inks and programs headed for landfills. For the ecologically minded, the platform gets a standing ovation. Theaters and concert halls are reopening after a year-long intermission. The stage is set, excitement is mounting. Activate your link and enjoy the shows.
