WELCOME FROM THE L A PHIL GALA CO-CHAIRS

YourGratefully,GalaCo-Chairs

Tonight, they join forces, along with special guests, to kick off the LA Phil’s extraordinary 2022/23 season—a year of unforgettable concerts and music learning initiatives that are made possible, in no small part, by the incredible generosity of donors and patrons like you.

Since his arrival in Los Angeles in 2009, Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel has built a strong bond with Maestro Williams, which has been deeply meaningful for both legendary artists.

Judy and Tom Beckmen Breck

We would also like to pay tribute tonight to the memory of Ann Ronus, who passed away earlier this year. In addition to being a committed LA Phil board member and a generous benefactor of countless galas, Ann was a dear friend to us all.

Thank you for your support of tonight’s LA Phil Gala: John Williams Celebration. As Co-Chairs of the Gala Committee, we are thrilled to share this special evening with you, as we honor Maestro Williams on the occasion of his 90th birthday and celebrate his 45-year partnership with the Los Angeles

relationship with the LA Phil began when he first conducted the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl half a century ago. His connection to us grew deeper when he conducted his composition Soundings at the inaugural Walt Disney Concert Hall Gala in 2003. An experimental piece, Soundings’ colorful sonorities mirror the Hall’s environment, which Williams called “the most inspiring subject for music that can be imagined.”

This past summer, we celebrated the first century of the Hollywood Bowl. That occasion offered us a chance to look back and reflect upon how many people have helped shape the history of the venue and of the Los Angeles Philharmonic itself. Tonight, we honor an artist who is a part of that story.

Summarizing John Williams’ impact as an artist is an impossible task. He’s shown the enduring emotional power of orchestral music, and in the words of Gustavo Dudamel, John has composed “a soundtrack for our lives.” While it is just one chapter of his incredible legacy, he has been a valued friend of our orchestra and demonstrates the positive force, if you’ll indulge the pun, individuals can have on our organization—from the artists and musicians on our stage to the administrators behind the scenes to you in the audience who help support our work. Thank you for being here tonight, and enjoy this special concert.

The first-ever collaboration between John Williams and the LA Phil was unadvertised and little known. In the late 1950s, John performed as an orchestral substitute pianist at the Hollywood Bowl. In 1968—after being convinced by then-LA Phil Executive Director Ernest Fleischmann—he conducted in public for the first time, stepping in for an ailing Arthur Fiedler to lead the LA Phil. Since then, we have been blessed to share countless memorable moments with John in this concert hall, at the Bowl, and with world premieres and recordings of his music.

I have spent most of my life in the music business, and, through my work, I have seen firsthand the difference that music can make in our lives and especially in the lives of young people. What better way to celebrate music education than by honoring the composer whose scores have inspired young listeners for generations?

Dactyls , a borrowed word from the Greeks, which we use to describe a threesyllable effect in poetry, as well as the digit with its three bones, may serve to describe the next movement. It is our third movement, in a three meter, and features a short cadenza for violin, harp, and timpani… yet another triad. The violin provides an aggressive virtuosity that produces a rough, waltzlike energy that is both bawdy and impertinent.

At one point you will hear harmonies reminiscent of Debussy, but I ask you to reflect on another Claude… in this case, Thornhill: a very early hero of mine who, it can be justly said, was the musical godfather of the Gil Evans/ Miles Davis collaboration. It is also in this movement that a leitmotif or theme appears, later restated in the Epilogue .

THE MUSIC

Composing program notes has always been challenging for me. These descriptions always seem to try to answer the question “what is this music about?” And while music has many purposes and functions, I’ve always believed that in the end, the music ought to be free to be interpreted through the prism of every listener’s own personal history, prior exposures, and cultural background. One man’s sunken cathedral might be another woman’s mist at the dawning. The meaning must therefore reside, if you’ll forgive me, in the “ear of the beholder.”

I can only think of this piece as being about AnneSophie Mutter, and the violin itself—an instrument that is the unsurpassed product of the luthier’s art. With so much great music already written for the instrument, much of it recently for AnneSophie herself, I wondered what further contribution I could possibly make. But I took my inspiration and energy directly from this great artist herself. We’d recently collaborated on an album of film music for which

In his note for the concerto, Williams writes:

Williams wrote this piece as a gift to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Tanglewood Music Center, where he has spent many summers performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops. The name offers literal directions to the venue from downtown Lenox, Massachusetts, and allows each section of the orchestra to have a moment in the spotlight. The work is an example of a growing subgenre of celebratory music Williams has composed for special occasions that also includes a fanfare premiered

relationships when he introduced the composer to his friend George Lucas. The young filmmaker later showed Williams an early cut of Star Wars that used preexisting classical music as temporary score tracks. Williams would later write in the liner notes for the soundtrack album that those “temp tracks” showed that the otherworldly nature of the film’s setting could be grounded by familiarsounding music, which in turn would bring home the film’s universal themes. He also tapped into the fantasy— rather than the sci-fi—nature of Star Wars, as he sought to write Wagnerianmelody-drivenleitmotifsfor the film’s various characters and thematic concepts.

“Princess Leia’s Theme” is a fairy-tale melody, beautifully orchestrated, which also showcases Williams’ affinity for the solo horn. David Cripps, principal horn with the London Symphony Orchestra, who recorded the original score, recently told the story of how this piece first came to life. As Cripps recalled, the brass players were thoroughly exhausted at the end of the session, and Williams asked them for another half hour to record just one more piece. The composer told

The 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial offered another seismic success in the relationship between Williams and Spielberg, and a decision the latter made during the recording process demonstrates the respect each man had for the contributions of the other. Williams was recording the lengthy and complex music for the finale of the film, and he was having difficulty synching the orchestra’s performance to the many precise cuts and beats of the picture edit. After several takes, Spielberg offered to turn off the film and allow Williams to record the music on its own, with exactly the tempi and phrasing he felt the music required. When it was recorded to Williams’ satisfaction, Spielberg then re-cut the end of the film to match this musical performance. The result was one of the most iconic sequences in movie history, and “Adventures on Earth” Williams’ concert adaptation of this music—provides a fitting conclusion to this evening’s gala program.

In “Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra” from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Williams shows his inherent knack for matching the tone and emotional language of Spielberg’s images. As the titular protagonist (Harrison Ford) and his father (Sean Connery) try to escape a gang of scherzothethecharacteristicNazis—whilemotorbike-ridingtradingafewquipsalongway—Williamsinvokessymphonicformofthe(Italianfor“joke”) to imbue what otherwise would be a tense escape with a feel of lighthearted adventure and even humor. than my children but not a whole lot. However, he seemed to know more about my music than I did.” That last remark betrays Williams’ characteristic humility, and what grew out of that initial lunch was a legendary artistic partnership that continues to this day and has resulted in many of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful films of all time.

Anne-Sophie Mutter is a musical phenomenon: For 46 years now, the virtuoso has been a fixture in all the world’s major concert halls, making her mark on the classical music scene as a soloist, mentor, and visionary.

The four-time Grammy® Award winner is equally committed to the performance of standard repertoire as to the future of music: so far, she has given world premieres of 31 works—Thomas Adès, Unsuk Chin, Sebastian Currier, Henri Dutilleux, Sofia Gubaidulina, Witold Lutosławski, Norbert Moret, Krzysztof Penderecki, André Previn, Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Widmann, and John Williams have all composed for her. Mutter dedicates herself to supporting tomorrow’s musical elite and numerous benefit projects. Since January 2022, she has served on the foundation board of the Lucerne Festival. In 1997, she founded the “Association of Friends of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation,” to which the AnneSophie Mutter Foundation was added in 2008. These two charitable institutions provide support for the scholarship recipients, tailoring it to the fellows’ individual needs. Since 2011, Mutter has regularly shared the spotlight on stage with her ensemble of fellows, Mutter’s Virtuosi.

Chamber music programs include violin sonatas and Mozart piano trios with Lambert Orkis and the cellists Maximilian Hornung and Lionel Martin. Further recitals with her longstanding piano partner feature works by Beethoven, Franck, and Mozart. On tour with active and former fellows of her foundation, she will perform Beethoven and Haydn String Quartets and Jörg Widmann’s Studie über

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Mutter’s concert calendar for 2022 once again reflects her musical versatility and outstanding position in the classical music world: At the Lucerne Festival, she gives the world premiere of Thomas Adès’ Air for Violin and Orchestra, which she co-commissioned, and also performs Joseph Bologne’s Violin Concerto No. 2. She is performing Anne-Sophie, the violin concerto that André Previn dedicated to her, in several German cities, with the New York Philharmonic led by Jaap van Zweden. Mutter is also performing the Brahms Double Concerto alongside cellist Pablo Ferrández and the Czech Philharmonic led by Manfred Honeck as well as the

London Philharmonic Orchestra led by Ed Gardner. She performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in the U.S. with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra led by Andrew Davis and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Riccardo Muti, and in Germany with the Pittsburgh Orchestra under Manfred Honeck. Another musical focus in 2022 is on John Williams: In Vienna and the U.S., Mutter performs his Violin Concerto No. 2, of which she is the dedicatee, and a selection of virtuoso film score adaptations Williams created especially for her. These performances are conducted by the composer.

JOHN WILLIAMS D G USTAVO DUDAMEL

In addition to being frequent collaborators, John Williams and Gustavo Dudamel have become close friends who admire each other’s work. As part of the LA Phil’s free digital concert series Sound/Stage, Dudamel interviewed Williams about his legacy and the many places each of them finds inspiration—from family and cooking to contemplating nature. The following is an excerpt of that interview, which has been edited for length.

GD: You have created the soundtrack of our lives. I know that you told me that music is our inspiration, of course, but what keeps you inspired to keep writing this beautiful music?

I have in the film world probably has to do with my career overlapping the change from analog recording to digital recording, from the acoustic orchestra sound to electronics and computers creating a sound world for contemporary films. I think my legacy probably has to do with sitting on the top of this transition. I don’t know where it’s going, but I look forward to it.

GD: What goals do you have?

PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 33 FEATURE

I’d be very interested in what goals you have … perhaps to conduct The Ring … this kind of thing?

GD: I think there are some simple things in life that you think are simple but are very important—cooking, for example, is something that inspires me. I love it. It’s like [conducting to make] a balance of flavors. If you ask me [about] a goal, I would love to really cook better and better and better.

JW: That’s fantastic! Now I have a goal—to be your guest. When you cook, I will come!

JW: One of my goals is to continue to work with people that I derive such inspiration from. I just worked with Anne-Sophie Mutter, the German violinist, and that was a fantastic dream. She’s a muse. I’m also thinking of writing a piano concerto … I don’t know exactly for whom. There are many great piano concertos in the repertoire, so already it’s

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL: It’s always such a privilege to have a conversation with you, to have the chance to share life. I feel that it is a gift for me to have you as a friend and as a model. You [turned 90 this year]. If you look back, what do you think is your legacy?

GD: What you are saying is very powerful, too, because it’s about contemplation. Having the chance to contemplate nature. Sometimes, in the world that we live [in], we don’t have the chance to sit in a garden and to really contemplate.

One of the things about becoming older is that you see not so much man’s work, but God’s work in a way: a butterfly, a leaf, a sky. It is inspiring to be here.

JOHN WILLIAMS: Well, first of all, Gustavo, being 90 is a new experience, but I can tell you it’s no different than 70 or 80. If you feel good—mental wholeness, physical health—you know you can work. I am very lucky in that respect. Many people my age don’t have music to be intoxicated by all the time. I always say that it is our oxygen. It’s how we live and breathe. I’m very Whateverlucky.legacy

a bit of an impertinence to think that I can contribute to that repertoire, but it certainly can be a Gustavo, goal.

JW: Inspiration is very difficult to grab, but I think the biggest one is nature. You know, I have written a lot of pieces about trees because I find them to be dignified witnesses to our crazy lives and to our follies. They look at us and smile, and they’re at peace, and they give us shelter and fuel.

Visit soundstage.laphil.com to watch the complete interview and discover more episodes.

JW: Yes, we need that. I think inspiration can be found in your children, in your parents, and, in our case, in the work of Beethoven. For example, E.T.—Steven’s film about children—the film is now 40 years old, and the children in it are all grown up to be parents themselves. But their performances are so pure. And whenever you see the film and you look at these kids, their faces are exactly what you want to see for that moment. Scoring a film like that is a great inspiration. I was on a high the whole time.

JW: I think there are always people who do as well as we do, and maybe even better, and I don’t know how much justice there is in the process of giving awards. But I think as a species we want to win, and that can be a very good impulse if it’s directed in the right way. It sets up a series of goals for us, and sometimes, we actually can accomplish such goals. Even for an old person like me, if you give me an Oscar, I’m happy, and maybe I will try to do better.

GD: But this is not about me. This is about you. And 50 years ago, you received your first Academy Award.

Jeri Lynne Johnson, conductor Julia Bullock, curator

Jeri Lynne Johnson leads a program that brings a historic fight for acceptance and dignity by Bonds and Price into conversation with the modern day.

It is also evidence of the sheer diversity and expansiveness of what those identifiers might mean with respect to history, liberation, selfempowerment, and collective accountability.

The phrase itself—Rock My Soul—is drawn both from the world of Black American spirituals and its repurposing by philosopher and educator bell hooks, who communicated the importance of love and community. The sentiment behind it is not, writes festival curator Julia Bullock, “an ethereal, intangible endeavor. It is a call to express yourself, engage with everything within and around you, and find enjoyment while doing it.”

Both with The Carolina Chocolate Drops and in her own solo work, Rhiannon Giddens has used her art to excavate the past and reveal bold truths about our present.

The Rock My Soul festival is generously supported in part by Margaret Morgan and Wesley Phoa.
