AS PART OF AN exchange program, the Norton Simon ART Museum presents The Sweetness of Life: Three 18th-Century French Paintings From the Frick Collection beginning June 14. Visions of contemporary life and fashion as depicted by François Boucher, Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin and JeanBaptiste Greuze provide viewers with an intimate look at the lives of middle-class French women of the 1740s and 1750s. The paintings are in the venue’s 18th-century Rococo gallery, among the museum’s own works by Chardin and Boucher and paintings by Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jean-Honoré Fragonard. This installation marks the first time that the Boucher and Chardin paintings have been to California and that the three have been on loan together. Jules and Edmond de Goncourt, eminent 19th-century historians of French art and society, deemed the 1700s the “century of women.” 411 W. AN EXHIBITION of 80 carved MUSEUM wooden faces depicting animals as well as folk and historic figures—at UCLA’s Fowler Museum—evokes the dramatic confluence of indigenous Mayan and colonial Spanish cultures and masquerade traditions. The objects featured at Guatemalan Masks: Selections From the Jim and Jeanne Pieper Collection are worn at spectacular masquerades performed by communities throughout Guatemala during indig-
enous festivals, Catholic feast days and secular events. Many of the often highly scripted dance-dramas— bailes or danzas—date back to the colonial era (1523-1821). The eyes of masqueraders become those of sacred deer and jaguars, saints and serpents, Spanish conquistadors and Mayan warriors, cowboys and bulls, and mischievous monkeys. The show also includes handwritten scripts as well as photographs taken by the Piepers during research trips. 308 Charles E. Young Drive N., L.A., 310.825.4361, fowler.ucla.edu

THE OUTDOOR summer season at Will Geer’s THEATER Theatricum Botanicum includes six plays performed in repertory through Sept. 29. Moby Dick—Rehearsed, opening June 8, is a seldom-produced tale by Orson Welles in which an acting troupe works between performances to create a play from Herman Melville’s epic novel about the fanatical Captain Ahab. Beginning June 22, Ellen Geer transfers Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People to a town in South Carolina in the 1980s. Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth and D.L. Coburn’s The Gin Game, launching July 13 and Aug. 17, respectively, are both Pulitzer Prize winners. Among the company’s

“PEOPLE LIKE STORIES,” media mogul Rupert Murdoch says in James Graham’s Ink, at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. And the real-life story the play tells—of NEW YORK the rise of The Sun newspaper in 1969 London from the bottom of the tabloid heap to the top—is as riveting as any on Broadway. Driving her own narrative is actress Glenda Jackson, whose gender-defying performance as one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragic heroes in one of his greatest family sagas, King Lear, holds court at—where else but?—the Cort Theatre. Lower down the social ladder are the cook and waitress at the heart of the revival of Terrence McNally’s Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune at the Broadhurst Theatre. Audiences love love stories, and this one has a hopeful ending.

PEPPERLAND IS choreographer Mark Morris’ tribute THE WEST to the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ landmark album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Created at the request of the City of Liverpool to launch its Sgt. Pepper at 50 Festival in 2017, the eveninglength work features an original score by composer Ethan Iverson that intersperses arrangements of Beatles songs with six original pieces that are both Pepper- and classically inspired. Pepperland, June 14-15 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, resounds with the ingenuity, musicality, wit and humanity for which the company is known. Also upcoming at the center: Four-time Grammy Award winner Anne-Sophie Mutter and Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin present three Mozart violin concertos June 25; and Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic musical Phantom of the Opera runs July 10-21.

She landed on the drum kit and into the lap of the drummer! The kit had to be reassembled. She made her entrance into Paris five minutes later.” Rupert Hemmings, now vice /CONTINUED ON PAGE 50

NE SATURDAY IN APRIL, THE BROADWAY matinee of the musical King Kong had to be canceled after Act 1, when the equipment operating the 2,000-pound puppet that portrays the titular ape malfunctioned and couldn’t be easily fixed. As the show’s production stage manager reportedly told the audience, “We can't do King Kong without King Kong, right?" While most mishaps—equipment malfunctions, prop failures and performer errors among them—don’t bring performances to a halt, the nature of live performing means that things can and do go wrong. And when they do, the best approach is, as the British pre-World War II slogan says, to “keep calm and carry on.” Stage manager Jill Gold, a veteran of more than 150 shows, most of them in Southern California, can empathize with her King Kong colleague. As production stage manager for La Mirada’s recent production of Singin’ in the Rain, she halted the show during a performance when the rain deck—the set14 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES HOW A BEAUTY CHANGED BROADWAY It was a simple fairy tale – a tale as old as time, in fact – but it proved to be a significant game-changer in Hollywood and on Broadway. Movie musicals had run aground by the 1980s; it was hard to get audiences to buy the idea of actors singing to each other onscreen. However, the clever lyricist Howard Ashman saw an opportunity. Ashman was best known for writing the book and lyrics for the quirky OffBroadway hit LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (1982), but he saw animated features as the best way to present musicals on screen. The fact that cartoon creatures (as opposed to actors) would be bursting into song seemed to offer an acceptable way for audiences to suspend disbelief. Ashman’s first experiment, Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989) proved to be a surprise hit, and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST followed in 1991. The music for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, THE LITTLE MERMAID and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was written by Ashman’s long-time collaborator Alan Menken. Menken Lyricist Howard Ashman (left) with composer Alan Menken (right) is the first to credit Ashman’s genius as a storyteller – not to mention a witty and literate lyricist – for the success of the revival of the Disney animated musical film which had started decades earlier with classics like SNOW WHITE and CINDERELLA, but had been discontinued in favor of live-action films like HERBIE THE LOVE BUG. Now, thanks largely to Ashman and Menken, it was back. But Broadway was beckoning. The New York Times called the animated BEAUTY AND THE BEAST the “best Broadway musical of the year” – even though it was a film. Soon, a one-hour stage version had been created for the Disney theme parks, but the team behind that edition convinced Disney chief, Michael Eisner, that it should be done on Broadway. So, arriving in New York with considerable skepticism from the theatre community, an expanded full-blown Broadway version of the movie opened in the Spring of 1994. While it lost the Tony award for Best Musical to Stephen Sondheim’s PASSION, the two shows had very different futures. PASSION closed after 9 months; BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ran for 12 years. It was a sign that Broadway was changing, and that Disney had arrived. Taking its cue from the surprise success of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Disney started an entire theatrical division that took Broadway by storm with its next show, THE LION KING (1997) and subsequent productions of Elton John’s AIDA, MARY POPPINS, NEWSIES and ALADDIN, among others. Sadly, visionary Howard Ashman never lived to see the full breadth of his success. He died from complications due to AIDS in 1991, while writing the lyrics for the animated ALADDIN. For the Broadway edition of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, famous lyricist Tim Rice (EVITA) contributed lyrics for the additional songs. However, one brilliant song written for the film by Ashman – but cut prior to its release – was reinstated for the stage version: “Human Again.” Its sentiment of celebrating and savoring the joy of living is a fitting tribute – and farewell – to a true genius of the American musical, on screen and on stage. In 1986, he wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). For more information, please visit howardashman.com. TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theater, and film since 1965, when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Their next three works together were much more successful: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess). Michael Starr in Singin’ in the Rain at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. Right: Lauren Cuthbertson of the Royal Ballet
president of artistic planning for L.A. Opera, remembers a similar “show-must-go-on” performer mishap when he was a stage manager at Florida Grand Opera. “In the early 2000s, the star soprano crushed her hand in a door 30 seconds before she needed to go out on stage and was swelling and bleeding like crazy,” he says. “She looked at me with wide eyes for help, and within seconds, we made a splint and bound her up with gaffer tape. "She walked out on stage—on time —sang her aria and [nailed] it. We cleaned the wound and patched it up at the next break, and she went to the hospital after the performance. The audience never knew.” Theater stars such as Betty Buckley in Cats, Richard Harris in Camelot and Lauren Bacall in Applause managed to avoid serious injury, or worse, when pieces of heavy equipment almost fell on or hit them. Some performers haven’t been as fortunate: A falling steel curtain at the outdoor Muny in St. Louis almost crushed the head of late actress-dancer Ann Miller. She couldn’t walk unassisted for two years due to vertigo. Even as ethereal an art as ballet isn’t immune to mishaps, though, says Lauren Cuthbertson, a principal with London’s Royal Ballet, “I don’t think there are that many—a fall, or a tiara gets stuck to a man’s costume.” About the latter, she says, “there are so many jewels, you can be tangled in each other. There’s nothing you can do but yank the tiara away.”
Cuthbertson, who dances the lead in the company’s Mayerling at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion downtown (July 5-7), had her own wardrobe malfunction when the elastic drawstring on a ballet shoe slipped out. “I didn’t know how I was going to get through it, but my wonderful dresser Elizabeth, who has an aura of such calm, sewed something and worked it out." Performers, no matter how well rehearsed, can make mistakes. In Romeo and Juliet, there were similar settings in two scenes. In the first, Cuthbertson as Juliet danced with Romeo, and in the second, they remained apart; her partner once stayed away for the first scene. “I do an arabesque the first time, and Romeo is supposed to be there to catch me,” Cuthbertson says. “I decided to do the arabesque, hoping it would jog his memory. It did.” Sometimes the misadventure has nothing to do with the performance. An audience member might become ill; heavy traffic might delay a performer’s arrival at the theater. Whatever the scenario, Gold keeps her wits about her. “You don’t want to scare the audience, and you don’t want your company to think no one’s in control,” she says. As for those onstage, Cuthbertson says, “you have to be resourceful—and you have to keep the element of performance. The front of your head, your face, is what everyone sees. The back of your head is you thinking what you’re going to do, sorting everything out.”

around. That’s hope, and that’s what hope can do.” Turning things around and offering hope are two elements of what has become Bohnett’s life mission. A Chicago native, he came to L.A. to attend the University of Souther California. In 1994 he co-founded GeoCities.com, an immensely popular website that was something of a forerunner to Facebook in that it allowed people to share online their passion for and knowledge of mutual interests. When Yahoo bought GeoCities in January 1999, Bohnett personally reaped $300 million. He established his foundation three months later. “From the very beginning I wanted to pick program areas that I was personally passionate about and that further the causes of social justice, social activism, social equity, social services,” Bohnett says. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the foundation now focuses on six core areas: the LGBTQ community (Bohnett is openly gay); CyberCenters, which connect the LGBTQ community to computers in more than 60 locations nationwide; the Fund for Los Angeles, which includes the arts and Food Forward; gun violence prevention; animal language, to improve animal welfare; and leadership initiatives. David C. Bohnett is chairman of the executive committee on the board of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.
MICHAEL BULBENKO
AVID BOHNETT IS A FORMER FIVE-YEAR chairman of the Los Angeles Philharmonic board and its current vice chair, chairman of the executive committee on the board of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills and a trustee of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.—among other positions. But it’s an encounter with oranges that perhaps best sums him up. Back in 2011, Bohnett was bicycling in Franklin Canyon Park in Los Angeles when he came across a group of people picking fruit in an orange grove. They were volunteers from Food Forward, a nonprofit that gleans surplus fresh produce and donates it to hungerrelief agencies in Southern California. But not all the trees were healthy, they told him, which reduced the potential yield. Bohnett decided to support Food Forward’s endeavor on the spot. He connected the landowner—the Department of Water and Power—with the Los Angeles Parks Foundation, resulting in a 20-year, $20 lease for the grove. Through his David Bohnett Foundation, he has donated funds to L.A. Parks for the grove’s rehabilitation, replacing dying trees and helping with other improvements and maintenance. “I’d ride my bike around the neighborhood and see this sad-looking, neglected grove,” recalls Bohnett at his foundation’s light-filled office in Beverly Hills. “When I first moved to California in the early ’70s, there were orange groves everywhere,” he says. “I felt it was an important part of our history. So I said, ‘I’m going to do something about this.’ It took years to put together, finding the right people to make it happen, but where there’s a will, there’s a way. Bohnett had been a clarinet player as a youth and regularly attended Hollywood Bowl and other concerts; ironically, the arts were not initially part of the program. But when the Walt Disney Concert Hall was about to open in 2003, he felt a responsibility to give back to his adopted hometown, which he loved and where he’d forged his career. “I thought, ‘This is a big deal. This doesn’t happen very often, when you open such a major civic monument, a cultural monument in the making,’ ” he relates. He signed up for the top-level sponsorship for each of three openingnight galas. As his name became better known, he was approached to join the L.A. Phil board. Unsure at first because of his commitment to social-justice causes, he says, he realized that “if I can join that board and then other arts boards and help make an impact for these organizations to reach out into the broader community, be a catalyst for that, I will have merged my support for the arts and my support for underserved communities and social justice. And I think I've been helpful with that.” Indeed. Bohnett helped recruit Gustavo Dudamel as music and artistic director of the L.A. Phil. that he’s so much about music as a tool for social change, for equity and for empowering people and their lives,” he says. “That’s just so harmonious with my values and the L.A. Phil’s values.” Bohnett has also worked on tech advances such as virtual reality for the L.A. Phil and created a fund for diversity and innovation to ensure adventuresome programming, new audience development and social responsibility. His involvement with the Wallis began in part on a personal level: The building had previously been the Beverly Hills post office— Bohnett’s post office, as a resident of the city. He followed the yearslong process of fundraising and design and donated money for the Founders Room. Once open, the center got off to a rocky start, affecting programming and outreach. “Board members approached me, asking, ‘Can you come in and just help focus and kind of right the ship?’ ” he says. He did so, helping to recruit Wallis executive director and CEO Rachel Fine. In addition to chairing his foundation, Bohnett remains involved in technology as founder of Baroda Ventures, a venture-capital firm that funds early-stage technology. No matter whom he’s helping, Bohnett is passionate about doing so. But, as it turns out, when it pertains to his own actions, hope isn’t enough. “What’s really sort of the message with this whole thing is: If you want to create a better world ... you can’t just hope for it,” he says. “You have to do what you can to create that better world.”

BALI VIA ECHO PARK Belinda Kazanci’s transporting Bel Kazan boutique. A FASHION LABEL INSPIRED BY the rich culture of Bali, Bel Kazan clothing is designed in Los Angeles and manufactured with traditional techniques in a Balinese factory. The mystique of the island that so captivated founder Belinda Kazanci has been translated into a contemporary line showcased in her intimate Echo Park boutique. “Bel Kazan garments are designed to transport you,” says Kazanci. “My first trip to Bali was lifealtering,” recalls Kazanci. Citing the streetside flower offerings, vibrant textiles and joyful spirits, she says, “I felt an unparalleled sense of inspiration among the Balinese people.” The entrepreneur, who was
born in Istanbul to a family in the textile business, now splits her time between her production facility in Bali and her studio/shop in Echo Park. “I’m always striving to find a balance between East-meets-West. I’m committed to giving back to the culture and people that gave me a renewed sense of purpose. “I love seeing the progression in Echo Park, and I’m happy Bel Kazan is part of that,” Kazanci says of the neighborhood’s sense of community. The boutique is in a vintage brick building on a stretch of Sunset Boulevard between Echo Park and Dodger Stadium. Functional clothing racks line the perimeter of the retail space, divided from Kazanci’s
studio by a floor-to-ceiling Balineseprint curtain. “Since our pieces are made up of bold, colorful prints, I wanted the shop to be very clean and white so that the clothes would be the highlight,” Kazanci says. “I love vintage finds and was thrilled to score the most perfect lamp for the aesthetic I tried to achieve.” With its white-on-black geometric pattern, the kimono-inspired Jana duster ($168) is perfect for dressing up a pair of jeans or sheltering oneself from an evening breeze. The V-neck Mari maxi-dress ($215) with cape-like flutter sleeves and black-and-gray Shibori batik print works equally well for the office or weekend brunch. The sleeveless dark-blue Harper dress ($194) is a summer classic that is as versatile as it is flirty. The surprisingly elegant Noah pants ($164), in a lively ginger aralia leaf print, are essentially a faux skirt that pairs nicely with a tucked-in black Zuma tank top ($84). “I love key classic pieces in my wardrobe that stand the test of time, pieces I want to live in because they’re made well and I feel amazing wearing them,” Kazanci says. That philosophy is reflected in her new collection Here I Am, inspired by her experience of finding Bali—and through Bali herself. “I love the colors, the geometric prints, the florals, and the linen fabrication that feels so dreamy when you wear it." The simple Lucia dress ($218) features a mustard zigzag print; details such as coconut buttons up the side

SEVEN CONVENIENT LOCATIONS and front pleat make it distinctive. The put-on-and-go Zabel dress ($154) has a playful ribbed hem and print inspired by Balinese batik stamping. Recognizing that fashion is one of the world’s most environmentally destructive industries, Kazanci was determined to make ethical and ec0-friendly choices. “Any leftover fabric gets upcycled into children’s clothing and donated to villagers in need or turned into floor mats and pillow stuffing. Nothing goes to landfill,” says Kazanci, who is committed to spreading awareness about how to ethically produce clothing. “The Bel Kazan woman has a sense of adventure that inspires her style,” says Kazanci. “She’s playful and fun while maintaining a timeless, modern attitude.” The proprietor believes all purchases, including clothing, should tell a story. —Joseph LeMoyne

EPHEMERAL REALITIES Renae Barnard’s compelling art finds a home ... in homes. SANTA MONICA-BASED ARTIST Renae Barnard has created a diverse portfolio of photographs, paintings and sculptures that challenge society’s mores, expressed through an intriguing tactility and engaging palettes. There is a deep well of emotion and an urgency for social justice that fuel her pieces, which only serves to make them more compelling. “My process and the end result of my work are intertwined and grapple with issues and concepts that are challenging or uncomfortable to speak about,” says Barnard, whose creations are popular with interior designers and progressive galleries. “I’m intrigued by the
ways identity is crafted and regulated by repetitive language and how realities are shaped through social ideologies.” Her works wrestle with established concepts of femininity and investigate issues of anxiety, fear, vulnerability and seduction. “Many of my sculptures are worked within inches of collapse and reflect my attraction to the imperfect and the aged,” she says. “Hazing Period is an exploration of the complicated history of female coming-of-age rituals and the methods by which we eroticize virtue,” Barnard says of an ephemeral work crafted from uncolored tracing paper in 2014—only to be destroyed three years later and the materials
repurposed for a subsequent piece, Propagate Progress. “Each of my projects act as a study for the next one. My process is generally exploratory, allowing room for discovery along the path and at the finish.” Barnard attempts to affect her own vision for progress through creating and exhibiting artwork about relevant issues. Propagate Progress is a purpledyed paper canopy resulting from a participatory community-building event at Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station. The public art installation, which explored the community’s diverse visions for future progress, was also designed to deteriorate with time and weather. “In the same way ‘progress’ today becomes ‘history’ tomorrow, this sculpture is about transformation and change,” explains the artist. Mauveine State is a paper wall sculpture, meticulously dip-dyed by hand to reveal the delicacy of each layer, a stunning yet somber study in graduating shades of purple. “I often push the limits of materials in my own works to reveal their delicacy and transience,” Barnard says. “This approach delights in the tactility and decadence of making in a way that immediately draws viewers.” In her abstract paintings Waiting on a Song and Forever Is Gone, Barnard blended natural compounds such as salt with highly manufactured materials such as polyurethane and acrylic paint. As the salt drew moisture from the pigment, a crystalline-textured surface formed. The pieces’ bold

color palettes were inspired by nature. Barnard suggests that their sculptural valleys and crests, combined with their crystalline texture, appear unnatural yet vaguely reminiscent of aerial landscape photography. According to the artist, she requires silence and solitude to work, eschewing music, visitors or clutter. “There’s an undercurrent of chaos that I’m always wrestling with,” she explains, adding that the artistic results are not a literal display of the problem or an offering of a solution but a record of the struggle. “I’m interested in examining our situations and moving beyond the place where we stand now,” she says. “In solitude I allow myself the sensitivity to make work that reveals both wounds and strengths, wrangling material out of an emotional response to feelings of tension,” Barnard explains. “My reason for making art, for making objects, is so that they might speak in my place, referencing issues that are uncomfortable and difficult to express in words.” Beyond the interpretative value of Barnard’s art and the profound messages she seeks to convey, many of the pieces can be enjoyed on a more casual level, though that superficiality would likely disappoint the artist. Her pieces work particularly well in modern, minimalist environments, where their colors, textures and emotion warm, perhaps even shake up, the surrounding spaces. —Roger Grody

LATIN TWIST CITY MARKET SOUTH IS A reimagining of downtown’s oldest wholesale produce market, where the Arts District blends into the Fashion District. There, in a former banana warehouse that assumes a new life as a breezy indoor-outdoor eatery is Dama, part of the quietly growing culinary empire of chef and television personality Antonia Lofaso. The Latin-themed menu at the restaurant/bar offers journeys from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, with a layover in Veracruz. Lofaso, a regular on the Food Network and a former Top Chef star, partners with the highly regarded Scopa Italian Roots
in Venice and Valley outposts including Black Market Liquor Bar and the Local Peasant. Dama shares a courtyard with popular Italian restaurant Rossoblu. Dama’s tropical decor suggests an exotic escape, hinting of places such as Old Havana and Casablanca, with a square bar anchoring the space and cushy leather couches framed by potted palm and banana trees. Three sides of the restaurant feature a veranda above the courtyard; steps below is additional alfresco dining at marble tables surrounded by booths with throw pillows. The menu is composed primarily of small shareable plates.

Among salads, consider a riff on a Caesar composed of shaved celery stems, leaves and seeds with soft quail eggs, lemon and Parmesan. Alternatively, a cucumber salad with pumpkin seeds, green onions and mint is enlivened with a generous splash of apple cider vinegar; Espelette pepper provides some subtle heat. The classic Mexican street food elote, charred corn rubbed with cilantro aioli, is dusted with cotija and queso fresco and drizzled with crema. Aguachile (a spicy ceviche) consists of kanpachi with radish, lime and red pearl onions. The small ground-beef empanadas at Dama are accompanied not with chimichurri but a delightful Brazilian hot vinegar. It is hard to imagine that a starter labeled simply “bread” could be among the most rewarding dishes on the menu, but Dama’s version of Spain’s ubiquitous pan con tomate—bread rubbed with garlic, drizzled with quality olive oil and topped with grated tomatoes— is inspired. Here, crusty grilled bread arrives in a pool of Portuguese olive oil, piled with sliced cherry tomatoes and thin wafers of blanched garlic. Those who enjoy the squash blossoms at Scopa Italian Roots will gravitate to those at Dama, which are stuffed with farmer’s and goat cheeses; whipped heirloom white beans are surprisingly sensual. A topping of shredded pork that is crispy but unnecessarily chewy only slightly distracts from the velvety pureed

beans dusted with Cotija cheese and served with fried tortillas. Large plates include rotisserie chicken with fries, sherry-cilantro aioli and tomatillo salsa, and 1:15 PM linguiça sausages topped with frisée, manchego, pickled shishitos and sherry vinaigrette. A Dama standout is the pan-fried red snapper, presented whole and deboned, served escabeche-style with pineapple, cilantro and razorthin slices of variously colored carrots. The moist, succulent fish, treated with a red chile paste and accompanied by tomatillo salsa, mildly spicy aioli and serrano chile sauce, is a great dish to share. The wine list is particularly intriguing, with selections from the Canary Islands, Corsica, Sicily, Galicia, Switzerland, Lebanon and the Azores in Portugal, along with more familiar regions. It is the kind of fun, approachable list that suits the setting and the multiethnic Latin-inspired cuisine, but the cocktails also deserve atten-
tion. A well-crafted daiquiri suits the scene; a cachaça-laced Batida de Banana provides a Brazilian twist. The Sandia y Mezcal demonstrates just how well the “other agave spirit” works in cocktails, in this case blended with watermelon juice, accented with citrus, salt and pepper. Desserts at Dama are worth sticking around for at Dama, particularly the churros with arequipe (Colombia’s dulce de leche) dipping sauce and the rice pudding sundae with Straus Family soft-serve vanilla ice cream, bourbon-soaked raisins, passion fruit and sesame brittle. These sweet notes complete what should be another happy occasion to venture downtown. —Roger Grody
