WELCOME FROM THE GALA COMMITTEE Tonight, the LA Phil kicks off its winter season for the 100th time! As co-chairs of this year’s Gala Committee, we couldn’t be more thrilled to share this once-in-a-lifetime concert with you. Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel also reaches a milestone tonight, as he begins his 10th year at Walt Disney Concert Hall. His decade in Los Angeles has, in part, inspired tonight’s program — California Soul — a musical journey through the Golden State, from Chinatown to Big Sur, and so many stops in-between. California Soul is a celebration not only of our orchestra and its home state, but also of you, our loyal donors, patrons, subscribers, and friends, who form the very core and soul of this organization. Your support for the LA Phil Gala raises critical funds for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its educational and community-based initiatives. Your generosity has allowed the LA Phil to expand and deepen its offerings, which include intensive training programs and immersive concert experiences for the student musicians of today, the budding composers of tomorrow, and music lovers of all ages. Thank you once again for your support tonight and every night. Because of you, these 100 extraordinary years are just the beginning.

Sincerely, LA Phil Centennial Gala Co-Chairs

WELCOME FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AND THE BOARD CHAIR This concert could not be more historic or more auspicious for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as we launch into our amazing Centennial season! California Soul promises to be a joyous, high energy celebration of the Golden State—paying tribute to the unique West Coast creativity that has nurtured and inspired us for a century. Our entire Centennial celebrates the LA Phil’s tremendous legacy and sets the tone for a glorious future—and tonight’s program reflects that philosophy in microcosm. Gustavo Dudamel, our Music & Artistic Director, is at the helm, of course. Elkhanah Pulitzer, a treasured member of LA Phil family after several outstanding projects with us, stages the program. Together, we will fly at high speed over California’s musical landscape. We feature two groundbreaking pieces by John Adams, our Creative Chair, including a movement from his concerto for electric violin, The Dharma at Big Sur, which was commissioned for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Tracy Silverman is the soloist tonight, just as he was for the world premiere back in 2003. We’ll also hear the moody “Love Theme” from Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Chinatown, a reminder of Hollywood’s vast influence on the creative soul of our state, and G-Spot Tornado by Frank Zappa, a classic L.A. iconoclast. Always true to our commitment to nurture emerging talent, we have also commissioned a brand new work, Underneath the Sheen, from Julia Adolphe, a composer working at the USC Thornton School of Music. A group of über-Californian songs will be another highlight of this evening, as we welcome to the stage Corinne Bailey Rae, who was with us this summer at the Hollywood Bowl, and Chris Martin, the Coldplay frontman who brought Gustavo and our YOLA musicians to the 2016 Super Bowl in Northern California. And the magic continues outside! Later in the evening, you’ll see Frank Gehry’s original dream for the building finally realized, with projections onto the exterior surface of Walt Disney Concert Hall in WDCH Dreams. This will be literally unlike anything you have ever seen before, as media artist Refik Anadol digitally extracts millions of images from the LA Phil’s archive and turns them into shimmering art. The proceeds of this Opening Night Gala and Concert will allow us to help nurture a new generation of musicians, creative artists and music lovers, through the LA Phil’s artistic and education programs. Thank you for being a part of this historic event and the LA Phil family. But most of all, enjoy the concert!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to tonight’s performance, which marks the beginning of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 100th season. When philanthropist William Andrews Clark, Jr. formed the LA Phil a century ago, Los Angeles was a small city and an unlikely host for a full-time, professional orchestra. That would change rapidly in the decades ahead as Los Angeles’ population ballooned, and the LA Phil grew right alongside it. By bringing the world’s great conductors, composers, and musicians to Southern California, the LA Phil would play an integral role in defining the musical identity of the Golden State. Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel honors this ongoing journey with tonight’s program, California Soul, which pays tribute to the creative community that has nurtured us for a century. We, in turn, seek to nurture our community through not only our artistic programs, but also our educational ones. When Dudamel arrived in Los Angeles a decade ago, he brought with him a desire to uplift the youth of our community through music education. His passion gave us YOLA, which has been opening doors for young people in underserved neighborhoods since 2007. This year, as part of our Centennial celebrations, construction will be begin on the Frank Gehry-designed Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center @ Inglewood: the program’s fifth site and first permanent home. By joining us this evening, you are part of the YOLA story. The proceeds from California Soul support YOLA, along with the LA Phil’s other extraordinary artistic and educational efforts. We may be celebrating the past tonight, but we are also building towards our future. Your generosity ensures our success – now and 100 years from now. Thank you. ABOUT THE PROGRAM

California Soul, Within and Beyond Tonight we celebrate the spirit of our golden state through the music and poetry of iconic artists who have made this “wild west” their creative home, artists who have looked to California’s vast range of landscapes and cultures for inspiration to create works that illuminate the human condition. For many of these artists, the journey has turned inward, to seek deeper understanding of the soul and of our place in the natural world. Each work

captures an essence, a way of looking deeply at the forces forged by California’s vitality, expressed through journeys within and beyond the self. Many of tonight’s works explore oppositional forces that pull at us, creating space for us to enter into greater nuance of understanding. In the orchestral pieces, you will hear inversions — darkness and light, turbulence and grace, anarchy and quiet wonder. Similarly, the songs and

poetry express a range of feelings from dark restlessness to joyful groove. Together, these works contain a reaching, a stirring, the desire to move beyond what is known, to seek something more. This reaching is what has led tonight’s artists to generate works that touch our souls while grounding us more deeply in what it means to call California, this place, this state of mind, our home. —Elkhanah Pulitzer

Written in just ten days after a score by another composer was written and rejected, the Chinatown score has become one of the best-known works of Jerry Goldsmith (1929-2004). Its haunting

main theme for trumpet, pianos, harps, and strings evokes a nostalgic, romantic mood but also deceives the audience into imagining the film will be a traditional detective yarn.

poems of transcendental vision: “Negative Love” by John Donne, and “Because I Could Not Stop for Death” and “Wild nights – Wild nights!” by Emily Dickinson. “Here is the other side of Emily Dickinson, saturated with an intoxicated, ecstatic, pressing urge

to dissolve herself in some private and unknowable union of eros and death,” Adams wrote about the last movement. “The metaphors, at once violent and sexually hyper-charged, play upon the image of a “heart in port,” secure and out of danger from the wild storm-tossed sea.”

Chinatown Chinatown (1974) revived the noir film with a Robert Towne screenplay that is ostensibly a 1930s murder mystery set against a scandal involving valuable Los Angeles area land and water rights.

Harmonium Harmonium was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony to celebrate the inaugural season of the Louise M. Davies Hall, and was dedicated to conductor Edo de Waart, who suggested the piece and led its first performance on April 15, 1981. In this work, John Adams (b. 1947) set three

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Underneath the Sheen Underneath the Sheen envisions the movement of light edging and shining through a canopy of leaves and branches as observed from the forest floor. The endurance and quiet omnipotence of California’s Redwood trees served as the source of

inspiration. Standing beneath these trees is a humbling and exhilarating experience, a stunning reminder of the simultaneous power and fragility of nature. The immense roots, twisting and turning, the mist hanging in the air, and the beams of light entering

the forest ceiling create a striking enclosure, encasing the observer in an otherworldly realm. The music explores this oddly foreign yet deeply intimate atmosphere, a sense of a lost home, a state of vulnerability. — Julia Adolphe (b. 1988)

The Dharma at Big Sur The Dharma at Big Sur was composed in 2003 for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Tracy Silverman was the soloist for the world premiere, October 24, with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Prior to that, John Adams offered some thoughts about the piece in an interview he created. A few extracts from that interview follow.

Q: YOUR NEW PIECE CARRIES A RATHER UNUSUAL TITLE. WHAT SUGGESTED IT? A: When the Philharmonic asked me for a new work to celebrate the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall, I knew I wanted to write something that reflected our collective experience of being Californians. I especially wanted to reflect the experience of those who, like me, were not born here and for whom the arrival on this side of the continent had both a spiritual and a physical impact. I originally searched for texts from writers who told of their own first impressions of California, and I even went back as far as the Spanish

Catherine Taylor Poetry Consultant, Literary Curator

missionaries to locate something appropriate. Then I read Big Sur by Jack Kerouac, a book that is both personal (as Kerouac always is), evocative, and that oscillates between turbulence and ecstasy. I thought Kerouac’s voice was the one that most closely approximated my own feelings.

Q: THE SECOND HALF OF THE PIECE IS CALLED SRI MOONSHINE. ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE ADAMS TITLES! A: Yes, indeed! It refers to the other

“guardian deity” of the piece, Terry Riley. Terry’s ranch in the Sierra foothills is called Moonshine Ranch. I first heard Terry’s music while I was

still a student at Harvard in the ’60s, and it was in part because of him that I decided to come out here. And there are all sorts of other connections, both musical and personal, not the least of which was that Terry, like Lou, was one of the first American musicians to look to Asia as a source for a new way of experiencing music… and experiencing the world. So, just as Kerouac, Ginsberg, and the Beats in their prose and poems first made the Dharma known to a wider American consciousness, so Lou and Terry did a similar thing in music. My piece is a recognition of that shift in consciousness that my arrival in California brought about in me.

CHRIS MARTIN Chris Martin is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and philanthropist. He is best known as the lead singer of the British rock band Coldplay. Coldplay came together as a band in late 1997 and they have gone on to become one of the most popular acts on the planet, selling more than 80 million copies of their seven No. 1 albums which have spawned a string of hits, including “Yellow,” “Clocks,” “Fix You,” “Paradise,” “Viva La Vida,” and “A Sky Full Of Stars.” They’ve also filled their trophy cabinet with almost every major music award there is (including seven Grammys and nine BRIT Awards).

CORINNE BAILEY RAE From Leeds, England, singer/ songwriter/ musician Corinne Bailey Rae shot to stardom with her self-titled No. 1 UK debut album in 2006, featuring the global hits “Put Your Records On” and “Like A Star.” Bailey Rae has received two Grammy Awards®, two MOBO Awards, alongside multiple nominations including BRIT and BET Awards. She was awarded her first Grammy in 2008 for Album of The Year when featured on Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. Her second album, The Sea (2010), was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize. The subsequent EP Is This Love garnered a Grammy for Best R&B Performance. Bailey Rae returned in 2016 with “boundary-defying, epic music” (NPR) for her third studio album, The Heart Speaks In Whispers, declared “the best R&B of 2016” (The Guardian). The album featured the stunning “Green Aphrodisiac” named among “10 best R&B songs of 2016” (Billboard) and selected by President Obama for his summer playlist. Bailey Rae has recently composed music for film and television, including the theme to Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (SKY1). She recorded “The Scientist” for Universal Pictures’ Fifty Shades Darker opening titles and soundtrack, which charted globally, and she performs a duet with Richard Hawley in eOne’s critically acclaimed independent film Funny Cow, starring Tony Pitts, Maxine Peake, and Paddy Considine, released on April 20 in the UK. Corinne will be performing select shows this year. Visit corinnebaileyrae.com for a full list of dates.

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC

LOS ANGELES MASTER CHORALE

Now in its Centennial season, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has redefined what an orchestra can be. Under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel since 2009, it presents an inspiring array of music through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. At home and abroad, the LA Phil — recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras — leads the way in ground breaking and diverse programming that demonstrates the orchestra’s artistry and vision, on stage and in the community. The LA Phil performs or presents more than 250 concerts annually at its two iconic venues: Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with approximately 165 performances, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the audience’s experience of orchestral music. Since 1922, its summer home has been the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all genres of music. The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond the Concert Hall, with wide-ranging performances in the schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its influential and multifaceted education initiatives is Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a millionaire and amateur musician. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, ten renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt

The Los Angeles Master Chorale is widely recognized as the country’s leading professional choir and one of Southern California’s most vibrant cultural treasures. Hailed for its powerful performances, technical precision, and artistic daring, the Master Chorale is led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon and President and CEO Jean Davidson. Founded by legendary conductor Roger Wagner in 1964, it is a founding resident company of The Music Center and choir-in-residence at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Chorister positions are highly sought-after, and the fully professional choir is a diverse and vocally dynamic group showcasing the many voices of L.A. Presenting its own concert series each season, the Los Angeles Master Chorale performs choral music from the earliest writings to contemporary compositions, striking a balance between innovation and tradition. It also frequently performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. The Master Chorale has been awarded three ASCAP/Chorus America Awards for Adventurous Programming, as well as Chorus America’s prestigious Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence. In 2017, it was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. The Los Angeles Master Chorale is committed to community engagement and fostering music education in schools, and its education programs include Voices Within residencies that encourage students to write and perform their own songs, and an expansive Oratorio Project for high school students. The Master Chorale also presents an annual High School Choir Festival, which brings teenagers from around the Southland to perform in Walt Disney Concert Hall. Visit lamasterchorale.org
