CARAVAGGIO’S STRIKING REALISM, his violent contrasts of light and darkness and his ability to express
powerful emotions were as surprising to his contemporaries as they are to us today. Many of the innovations Caravaggio introduced were adopted by painters from different countries, backgrounds and influences. That Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) was one of the most influential painters in European history is underscored at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibition Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy. An unprecedented eight paintings by Caravaggio himself are shown together for the first time in California; 50 more paintings document his impact on painters from France, Spain and the Netherlands, among them Georges de La Tour, Gerrit van Honthorst, Velázquez and Simon Vouet. 5905 Wilshire Blvd., L.A., 323.857.6000, lacma.org

New York City Ballet in George Balanchine’s classic version of The Nutcracker
What would the holidays in New York be without Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker? Make that four Nutcrackers. The granddaddy of them all is George Balanchine’s classic version, danced by New York City Ballet every year since 1954. It’s at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater through Dec. 30. American Ballet Theatre’s sugarplum fairies pirouette into Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House, executing Alexei Ratmansky’s choreography Dec. 7-16. What sets Dances Patrelles’ Yorkville Nutcracker apart is its setting: New York City’s Upper East Side in 1895. NYC’s newest tradition is at the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse Dec. 6-9. Chris March’s Butt-Cracker Suite is a Nutcracker strictly for laughs; the spoof plays out in a trailer park at Off-Broadway’s Here Mainstage through Dec. 29.

The hit musical comedy The Addams Family brings the darkly delirious world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch to spooky and spectacular life. Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and Drama Desk-winning composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party) created the show. It’s at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa Dec. 1830. War Horse is at the Segerstrom Center Jan. 22-Feb. 3. A tale of courage, loyalty and friendship set in 1914 England, the imaginative and inventive drama is filled with stirring music and songs; life-size puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company bring breathing, galloping and charging horses to the stage. The late Whitney Houston is back in Londoners’ minds with the Dec. 5 opening of The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre. Based on the Warner Bros. film, in which a superstar falls in love with the former Secret Service agent hired to protect her from manic fans, it features Houston hits including Queen of the Night and I Will Always Love You. British comedian Jennifer Saunders penned the musical Viva Forever, opening Dec. 11 at Piccadilly Theatre, loosely based on the now-defunct pop band the Spice Girls. The girls’ greatest hits are played throughout. Hansel and Gretel, directed by Katie Mitchell and opening Dec. 13 at the National Theatre, Cottesloe, offers ideal holiday fare for kids. Everyone knows how the Grimm fairy tale goes: Two children wander into the woods, get lost and come upon a house made entirely from sweets and delectable food. Who could resist?

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg re-team to bring their epic stage musical Les Misérables to the big screen with a stellar director and cast. By Libby Slate
On stage, the chain gang is floor-bound; in the film, convicts toil in a cinematic expanse of near-waist-deep water.
For months, film, television and online audiences have been viewing the trailer for the film adaptation of the stage musical Les Misérables; it features the despairing “I Dreamed a Dream” sung by Anne Hathaway as French factory worker-turned-prostitute Fantine, shown getting her long hair cut to sell to support her daughter, Cosette. What viewers can’t tell from the trailer is that, in order to better capture the titular misery of the characters, the London studio set was bitterly cold. As the scene takes place in the hull of a harbor ship, where prostitutes plied their trade in early 19th century France, the haircut was accompanied by the stench of real rotting dead fish. Barricades, such as the one built by students for the June Rebellion of 1832 depicted in the show, were erected from furniture and other items thrown out of windows onto the street and piled high. For the movie, says actor Eddie Redmayne—who plays student rebel Marius, Cosette’s love interest—director Tom Hooper “had seven cameramen dressed as peasants and 10 minutes of film in the cameras.... There were about 30 students and 40 peasants.” In another nod to historical verisimilitude, Hooper instructed the cast to use chairs, wagon wheels and other objects from shops and other set surroundings. “He said, ‘Build the barricade,’ ” recalls the Tony Award-winning Redmayne. “We had to use everything we could in >continued on pAGE 18

10 minutes. It felt most extraordinary. That adrenaline-fueled look on our faces was real.” Production designer Eve Stewart reconstructed the barricade for durability and special effects. Opening Dec. 25, the Working Title/Cameron Mackintosh film stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, the parole-breaking ex-convict who learns to live a righteous life; Russell Crowe as Javert, the policeman; and Amanda Seyfried as adult Cosette, in addition to Hathaway and Redmayne. It is Hooper’s first film since winning the 2010 Academy Award for The King’s Speech. Universal Studios is the distributor. The musical’s creators, lyricist-librettist Alain Boublil and composerlibrettist Claude-Michel Schönberg, together with English-language lyricist Herbert Kretzmer, re-teamed for the big-screen adaptation. The show, based on Victor Hugo’s novel, first played in French in a Paris arena in 1980. Then producer Mackintosh stepped in: The English-language version premiered in London in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987, where it won eight Tony Awards; it has since been seen by 60 million people in 42 countries. The stage musical has been the third-longest-running show in Broadway history, but Chicago is poised to take over that spot just before the film’s opening day. In bringing the show to the screen, the guiding principle, says Boublil, was “to make sure we were going to make a movie, a real movie, not a filmed play. You will see some of the scenes rewritten, and just a twist of some of the existing music.” Instead of the floor-bound chain gang of the show’s opening, for instance, Valjean and masses of other convicts toil in a more cinematic expanse of near-waist-deep water. Schönberg says his primary concern was “to maintain the unity and the integrity of the score. The music is a beautiful arc, and you have to save the beauty and the arc, the shape of it. We tried to adapt the best of the show for the screen. “On stage, there is a lot of presentation. Characters come onstage and sing to the audience. It’s impossible to do that in a film. A constant in the writing of the show was: Why are they singing? That was even more important in the movie, with less than 10 percent dialogue. It was crucial for us to find a smooth way to switch from singing to dialogue.” Boublil and Schönberg worked with screenwriter William Nicholson. Schönberg composed additional music for the film’s transitional moments. In addition to the show’s classic numbers—such as “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?”—he, Boublil and Kretzmer wrote a new song, “Suddenly,” sung by Valjean after he and Cosette escape Javert. “The song comes directly from a very touching part of the novel,” Boublil says. “Jean Valjean has discovered the >continued on pAGE 62

FRoM the ARtiStiC diReCtoR A FEW MONTHS BACK I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM NEIL PATRICK Harris, a friend of the Geffen since he appeared here in All My Sons in 2006. Since then, we’ve been continually looking for projects on which we might collaborate, and when Neil approached us with this idea — a night of magic and perhaps a bit of mayhem — I was eager to know more. The next evening I found myself at the Magic Castle, captivated by Helder Guimarães and Derek DelGaudio. To see one great prestidigitator is dazzling; to see two in tandem is electrifying. Working seamlessly together, they create the illusion of working at odds — with jaw-dropping results. As I sat in wonder in the small packed space, knowing I was one of a select few to see the show, I could already imagine the pair in our own intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater. So with Neil at the helm, we decided to create this special evening and offer you something completely unconventional for the holidays. After all, our dream has always been to make non-traditional theater our own tradition in the Audrey. From the Geffen family to you and yours, we wish you a magical holiday season. Enjoy,

HELDER GUIMARÃES (Performer) In 2006, at the age of just 23, Helder became the youngest ever World Champion of Card Magic. Helder has also worked as a magic consultant for several TV projects including The Tonight Show, as well as theatrical productions such as Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He is also the author of Reflections, a book for professional conjurers. Helder’s work has been widely recognized by his peers; most recently, he was awarded the title of Parlor Magician of the Year by The Academy of Magical Arts, Hollywood.

Contemporary in Santa Monica, LA><ART Annex in Hollywood and at The Kitchen in New York. Derek created The [Space] Between, a conceptual magic shop as a platform for situation-specific projects, and as result of this and other groundbreaking interdisciplinary work, in 2011, the Conjuring Arts Research Center appointed DelGaudio their Director of Contemporary Conjuring. More recently, he received critical praise for 184 Seconds, a conceptual magic performance, and in 2012, the Academy of Magical Arts named him Closeup Magician of the Year. THE GIFT
Written by JOANNA MURRAY-SMITH Directed by MARIA AITKEN AMERICAN PREMIERE FROM THE P YWRIGHT OFTHE GEFFEN HIT, THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES
Acclaimed Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith brings this comedic American premiere to the Geffen Playhouse. When two couples meet while vacationing at a ritzy resort, they instantly transition from strangers to the best of friends. Despite their almost comical differences — Ed and Sadie are middle-aged, rich and traditional, while Martin and Chloe are young artists glowing with their potential to change the world — they find themselves spending the rest of their week together. When one seemingly inconsequential event throws both their lives into a tailspin, the couples find themselves wrestling with a moral dilemma: while it’s human nature to want what you don’t have, is it unnatural to abandon something that you do? This provocative new work draws audiences in with a beguiling hilarity that gives way to an unsettling twist, posing searing questions rather than providing comfortable answers.

Written by DAVID MAMET Directed by RANDALL ARNEY PULITZER PRIZE WINNING P YWRIGHT
August Strindberg’s classic play about sex, greed and manipulation is adapted by the modern master of such tantalizing topics: Neil LaBute. This scandalous work chronicles the flirtation and seduction between the wealthy lady of the house and one of her father’s footmen, capturing the timeless consequences of passion and power.
Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney takes a fresh look at Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s groundbreaking work about three misguided misfits plotting the theft of a rare coin collection. This defining work negotiates explosive humor, frenetic energy and surprising tenderness and has not seen a major Los Angeles production in over a decade.

Finding a high-end fashion boutique in downtown L.A. is not as rare as it used to be. Now Sandast, an artisanal maker of fine leather goods, sets up shop on South Hill Street, in the shadow of the AT&T Center, offering yet another reason to wander beyond Bunker Hill. Think of it as part boutique, part museum and part history lesson. Co-owner Milan Franeta, a native of the Mediterranean republic of Montenegro, is a self-taught leather craftsman who leased 4,000 square feet of space for his boutique and adjoining factory with business partner and veteran retailer Chris Pak. The former auto garage, a cavernous space with massive wooden trusses, now combines a century-old industrial vibe with chic sophistication. Entering through a huge roll-up garage door, shoppers discover an inviting space filled not only with Franeta’s leather goods, but also products from a variety of artisanal clothing manufacturers. The place is filled with an eclectic selection of antiques: sewing machines, cash registers and saddles exhibiting nearly a century of wear. When he was a kid, Franeta was fascinated by the American West portrayed by Hollywood and continues to be intrigued by the kinds of

Rummage on Beverly Boulevard
Kishani Perera is a highly regarded interior decorator with a celebrity clientele. Last year, she opened her own showroom, Rummage, on a designheavy stretch of Beverly Boulevard near the Grove. The storefront is squeezed between two other notable showrooms, Mosaik and Modernica; a couple doors west is leather designer Calleen Cordero’s boutique. Between scouting for midcentury-modern chairs and handcrafted shoes, one can take in some culinary arts at chef Gino Angelini’s nearby trattoria. Rummage is a deep, almost impossibly narrow space with high ceilings and a mezzanine office suite in the rear. It’s a feast for the eyes from the moment you cross the threshold from the Beverly Boulevard sidewalk. Your attention will dart from a Queen Anne sofa piled high with colorful pillows to a mirrored art deco-inspired dance ball to yellow chinoiserie table lamps. The taupe walls are lined with vintage art and an eclectic assortment of quirky items such as a framed silhouetted target from the Quebec Police Department’s shooting range and a rusted iron horse head salvaged from a Pennsylvania farm ($2,700). Perera, whose book Vintage Remix captures her philosophy of juxtaposing vintage and contemporary pieces, clearly enjoys searching for eclectic, 46 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe

mark piscitelli men’s fashions whimsical objets d’art. “I always wanted to have a store and knew I could no longer keep all this stuff at the house,” she recalls of her 2011 debut of Rummage. Because the owner is a designer, and not just a collector, the merchandise is showcased into engaging vignettes. Perera is fond of British, French and Portuguese Colonial designs, perhaps due to her Sri Lankan heritage, but virtually every style and genre seems to be represented. Atop a pair of acrylic-paneled, mirror-finished side tables ($1,500) are a couple chalkware bulldogs and some globes whose references to the USSR and French West Africa reveal their approximate vintage. Other examples scattered around the premises—consider a black ocean globe by Replogle ($250) or constellation globe— remind us just how aesthetically pleasing these accessories can be. “They’re fascinating pieces of functional art, each a lesson in history,” notes Perera, who finds merchandise everywhere from eBay to European estate sales. “The common thread,” she says, “is that everything has to have personality, whether through crazy colors or unique characteristics … nothing here is cookie-cutter.” With prices starting at $30, Perera draws not only fellow design professionals, but also young homeowners from the neighborhood looking for something quirky or exquisite. style piece with elegant gold-leaf accents, features eight legs with female busts and claw feet. Representing the other end of the spectrum is a round, worn zinc table with metal-and-wood base ($4,500), while an antique industrial stool—a green tractor seat mounted on tripod legs—oozes vintage character. Rummage makes its own custom pieces, including more contemporary zinc tables and Moroccan-inspired poufs with vintage kilim banding for contrasting color. Lighting is a specialty of Perera, and near the front door assorted chandeliers dangle from the branches of a faux tree. Hanging from the high ceiling in the center of the space is the designer’s own custom Margaret chandelier, which at $15,500 is one of the showroom’s priciest objects. This piece, accented with reclaimed metals and antiqued mirror tiles, is available in smaller sizes as well. A vibrantly colored table lamp from the 1970s features yellow and red drip glaze ($650). An art deco pendant chandelier ($900) with nickel-plated hardware, whose frosted glass shade is shaped like the inverted crown of a skyscraper from the 1930s, is striking. A midcentury-modern fixture— a simple hanging globe lamp encased in an ebonized wood cage—is also memorable. —Roger Grody

Gnocchi at Wood & Vine
It wasn’t so long ago that planning an evening at the Pantages Theatre was a challenge, due to the dearth of decent places to dine in Hollywood. Fortunately, the area has changed dramatically for the better, and Angelenos no longer need to apologize to out-of-town guests who venture onto Hollywood Boulevard. Now at the strategic corner of Hollywood and Vine is Wood & Vine, ideal for a casually chic pre-theater dinner or drink after the show. Lively and fashionably laid-back, the two-level restaurant is decked out in inlaid stone floors, a long wood bar with soaring shelves and simple candlelit wood tables. Contemporary chandeliers with Edison bulbs hang from a high faux tin-stamped ceiling, while the mezzanine level offers a quieter, cozier scene and bird’s-eye view of the proceedings at the bar. And for those who want to take it outdoors, there’s a spacious wood-decked patio surrounded by cedar shake-clad walls. Miniature bulbs are strung overhead, and a prominent fire pit warms the space. Among the best items for sharing is a charcuterie-and-cheese board, ideal for mixing and matching and attractively presented with various accoutrements. Highlights include bresaola and a chicken liver mousse

whose degree of decadence is almost a stand-in for foie gras, which, of course, is now contraband in the Golden State. The cheese selection is eclectic and includes the likes of Shropshire blue cheddar, taleggio and Stinking Bishop, an aptly named British cow’s milk cheese for those who think Epoisses is too mild. Goat cheese appears in two vegetarian-themed small plates on the daily-changing menu: in a sherry vinaigrette-dressed beet salad with candied pistachios, and stuffed squash blossoms with tomato jam. A pair of perfectly caramelized diver sea scallops is plated over grits with kohlrabi, an exceptional dish but for a slightly heavy hand with the salt on a recent evening. Pan-roasted cod is accompanied by crispy pancetta, braised lima beans and gremolata; pillow-soft pan-seared gnocchi arrive in a pig’s head ragù. A popular option is chicken-andwaffles, a riff on the Harlem dish from the Cotton Club era when jazz musicians compromised between a midnight snack and breakfast after a late set. Wood & Vine’s maple-glazed waffle with sage butter, topped by two largepieces of tender fried chicken, lacks imagination and heat. This dish has become trendy, but it’s hard to surpass standby Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles without an innovative touch such as jalapeño syrup. Deep-fried chicken re-

appears in buttermilk biscuit sliders stuffed with crispy chicken livers and served with truffled fries. For dessert, a petite butterscotch pot de crème—currently the hottest dessert in town, it seems—is outstanding. Its crown of salted caramel ice cream, however, is overkill; a dollop of whipped cream would seem the perfect touch. To keep them interesting, profiteroles are filled with rotating flavors of ice cream, like pumpkin or even avocado, and drizzled with hot chocolate sauce. The wine list offers interesting options such as Santa Barbara County’s Fiddlehead sauvignon blanc and a tempranillo from Bokisch Vineyards in Lodi. It’s 4:32 PMalmost exclusively Californian, but a sparkling blanc de noirs from New Mexico’s Gruet Winery is an intriguing exception. A reserve list is available. The bartenders deftly execute market-driven cocktails and pour a variety of craft beers. This block truly represents an energized new edition of Hollywood Boulevard, and the renaissance was worth the wait. Occupying the 1923 Taft Building, the original offices of Charlie Chaplin and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Wood & Vine provides the perfect bridge from one golden era to another. —Roger Grody

Vineyards at Colomé in Argentina
Reflecting recently on wines I’d like to be drinking brought to mind three. The Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, between San Jose and Santa Cruz, was once a sleepy domain dominated by a few giants of California wine—Ridge Vineyards, Mount Eden Vineyards and Bonny Doon. Now, some 75 wineries produce pinot noir, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and Bordeaux-style and Rhone-style blends in the heavily wooded area. I recently took the scenic drive on California 17 over the mountains to Santa Cruz and the Pacific Ocean and decided to detour to David Bruce Winery, long renowned for its terroir-driven pinot noir and chardonnay. The David Bruce vineyards are in a forested area some 2,000 feet above sea level, less than 20 miles from the ocean. The days are warm, the nights are cool—the perfect climatic environment for pinot and chardonnay. The estate chardonnay is firmly structured and exhibits notes of lemon oil and spice. The estate pinot is earthy and luscious and bodes well for a long life. I consider both wines collectibles, priced in the $50 range, with ample upside if you choose to cellar them for additional maturity and complexity. It may come as a surprise to some, but Argentina has a diverse wine culture; there’s quite a bit more to it than the malbec wines that have

flooded the market since 2008, when the recession hit and red-wine enthusiasts devoted themselves to finding outstanding reds they could afford to drink. Argentina also produces torrontés, an aromatic white wine that has gained little traction in the United States. That could change quickly if consumers see more wines of the caliber of the 2011 Colomé Torrontés ($15) from the Valle Calchaquí in the Salta region, well north of the heart of wine production in Mendoza. The vineyard sites of Valle Calchaquí are higher and cooler than many in Mendoza and often deliver more structured, elegant wines. Torrontés has long suffered from overproduction; it was made with volume and value in mind, and little care was given to growing grapes that might provide a different experience. The Colomé torrontés has more character than most, owing to its firm structure and beautifully developed aromatics. It is not one of those thin, light, innocuous torrontés wines of the past. (Its intense floral aromas dissipate a day or so after opening, so if the floral aspect is not your bag, just open the wine and wait.) This is a beautiful wine to pair with savory appetizers around the holidays, and at $15 it’s a good price, even better considering the big jump in quality over run-ofthe-mill torrontés.

Young Musicians Foundation Presents
Finally, as I search for very highclass but affordable red wines to serve this holiday season, I can’t help but be impressed with the Penley Estate 2010 Hyland Shiraz from Coonawarra, Australia ($20). Penley Estate is among the most consistent wineries in this cooler area of southeastern Australia, near the Southern Ocean. Although Coonawarra is best known for cabernet sauvignon, shiraz benefits from the same conditions that make the cabernet so successful in the area. There is enough warmth in the region to ripen shiraz, but not so much to produce the high-alcohol fruit bombs typically found in the nearby Barossa Valley. The terra rosa soil also makes for wines that express very attractive minerality and earthy complexities. This vintage is still so young that at this stage it’s extremely tight and not so expressive when first opened, but it’s a revelation with a bit of aeration from decanting or after being opened overnight. This is one of those wines that tastes far more expensive than it is, and one sip is all you need to understand how it earned a platinum award at the 2012 Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition in September. Best of all, it has the structure and character to improve with age, making it an excellent candidate for longer-term cellaring as well as for immediate consumption. —Robert Whitley

feeling of love for the very first time; he has never felt anything other than hatred or defiance. This little girl trusts him completely. There is the line in the book, ‘Two unhappy people can make one happy person.’ ” All songs were performed live, a rare process, not lip-synced. Other book elements besides “Suddenly” are also in the script. “We wanted to strip [the show’s] theatricality away and strip to the reality of what these people were experiencing,” says production designer Eve Stewart, an Oscar nominee for The King’s Speech. “We spent a long time with Victor Hugo’s novel,” she says. “It was so vivid and detailed. Once we got to the damp, stinking truth and understood the real misery of these people, we were able to get back to the theatricality that suited the music.” To research, Stewart spent time visiting pertinent Parisian museums and traveled the locales of Valjean’s journey; she based the look of 1830s Paris on plates she discovered that were taken by French photographer Charles Marville. Boublil says that his own favorite movie musical, West Side Story, was also an inspiration, as were Oliver! and My Fair Lady. “I hope we will be in that league,” Boublil says. “We all worked handin-hand with the same purpose: to turn a classic musical into a classic movie.”
