TWO PIANO PRODIGIES at a master class encounter an even greater talent: the virtuoso Glenn Gould, on the cusp of superstardom. The devastating realization that they will never approach their new rival’s level of artistry changes their lives forever. A meditation on dreams forsaken and hopes unrealized unfolds when L.A. Opera Off Grand presents the West Coast premiere of The Loser Feb. 22-23, marking composer David Lang’s return to the company for the first time since his spellbinding Anatomy Theater. An intimate staging of the work for baritone, piano and chamber ensemble incorporates multiple levels of the spectacular Theatre at Ace Hotel. It stars Rod Gilfry in a role he created for the 2016 world premiere at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House for the Next Wave Festival in New York City. 929 S. FIDM MUSEUM’S Art of Motion Picture Costume MUSEUM Design exhibition is a tradition for L.A. movie lovers. The 27th edition features the creativity of costume designers and their teams working in a variety of film genres. In the museum’s history gallery is Majesty and Mystery: Saving a Napoleonic Court Gown. Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor of France in in 1804. Beside him at the coronation was his wife, MarieJosephe-Rose de Tascher de la

Pagerie de Beauharnais—whom he called Josephine. A strict dress code was mandated at royal court functions and the Empress was the arbiter of style. Ladies wore high-waist gowns and trains made from French silk, satin, lace, velvet and net, with precious-metal embroidery motifs including bees, roses and tulips; the empress may have worn the astonishingly rare ensemble on display. The exhibitions run Feb. 5-April 12; admission is free. 919 S. Grand Ave., downtown, 213.623.5821, fidmmuseum.org

CUBA’S HOTTEST contemporary dance DANCE company shares a little slice of Havana when the Malpaso Dance Company “brings its breezy, charming surprises” (Los Angeles Times) to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts’ Bram Goldsmith Theater March 28-30. The troupe was founded in 2012 by resident choreographer and artistic director Osnel Delgado, executive director Fernando Sáez and dancer Daileidys Carrazana. A sparkling program of movement and music will feature works by Delgado and fellow international choreographers Aszure Barton, Cecilia Bengolea and Ohad Naharin. Of Malpaso’s last local appearance, The Times wrote, “a pinch-me moment, one of those times when you catch an artistic dawning.” 9390 N. SOME MUSICALS GET BETTER with age. Take Cole Porter’s vintage 1948 fizz, Kiss Me, Kate. It’s “Wunderbar,” especially now that Kelli O’Hara and Will Chase play NEW YORK the over-the-top embattled lovers in the Broadway revival previewing Feb. 14 at Studio 54. Fiddler on the Roof, a traditional Broadway tuner about Old World traditions, has been a staple since 1964—but never like this. Performed in Yiddish, with Russian and English surtitles, the latest Fiddler is more than a revival; it’s a rebirth. Previews begin Feb. 11 at off-Broadway’s Stage 42. Via a regional production in 2015 and an off-Broadway run last year, Be More Chill arrives at the Lyceum Theatre on Feb. 13. After a little fine-tuning, this musical about a high-school outcast finds its voice on the Great White Way.

STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S UPLIFTING musical Follies returns to the National stage Feb. 12-April 6 following its sold-out run. Set in 1971, it revolves around a lavish soirée thrown at the soon-to-be closed Weissman Theatre. For nostalgia’s sake, the Follies girls return to the stage for their swansong. David Suchet—best known in his role as Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot—stars in Arthur Miller’s The Price, Feb. 5-

Frederica von Stade in Three Decembers

Stephen Sondheim’s Follies at the National Theatre

April 27 at Wyndham’s Theatre. The tale revolves around brothers, a policeman and a surgeon, who meet after 20 years of estrangement to sell family assets—and realize how much they’ve lost apart. Downton Abbey’s Lily James and The X Files’ Gillian Anderson are at the Noel Coward Theatre in a new adaptation of All About Eve, based on the Academy Award-winning film about a fading star and her young assistant.

VENERATED MEZZOsoprano Frederica von THE WEST Stade stars in San Diego Opera’s production of Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers, reprising the role she created for the work’s world premiere in 2008 for Houston Grand Opera. Based on a libretto by Gene Scheer and an unpublished play by Terrence McNally, it runs March 8-10 at the Patrick Henry PHAME! theater. Three Decembers explores the truth, lies, resentments and the hopes of a family over the decades. With simple yet profound music that bares the souls of each character, the chamber opera is an intimate meditation on the family we wish for and the family we end up with. In it, a beloved stage actress and singer is writing her annual Christmas letter, but no letter is enough to make up for the resentments of her now-adult children. When the truth of their father’s tragic death comes out, can healing and forgiveness follow, or is it too late?

While there’s a bureaucracy involved in running most schools, Gilad says, “our school programs are run mostly by a core group of faculty, co-governing and making the artistic decisions. It’s not the L.A. Phil, which has a matinee concert at the downtown venue the same day. The evening performance is by the Colburn Orchestra, the flagship ensemble of the Colburn Conservatory of Music. The conservatory in turn is a program of the Colburn School, across Grand Avenue one block south of the concert hall. The school is a gem of music and dance learning for both career-minded students and the general public—and one of Los Angeles’ best-kept secrets. “We’re the smallest conservatory in the country,” says Colburn School president and CEO Sel Kardan. “We only have 120 students. The orchestra is the entire student body. They’re a close-knit group. And it creates

excellence in technique, says institute dean Jenifer Ringer, a former New York City Ballet principal dancer. “We wanted there to be a real sense of progression, to lead the dancers to high levels,” she says. There’s also a focus on exposing students to different dance genres and to other arts; the 16 students in the Dance Academy, the school’s ballet training program, tour a museum every month for inspiration. The institute offers classes for all ages and experience. The Colburn’s Community School of Performing Arts provides instrumental, jazz, vocal and music theory instruction as well as performing opportunities to the public. An early-childhood program starts at 7 months. "We have choral groups for adults, and jazz ensembles," says Community School Dean Susan Cook. Community students potentially give recitals on Fridays. A complete roster of Colburn School public performances can be found at colburnschool.edu/calendar/. Upcoming dance events include Tap Fest (March 9, $10) and Counterpointe, a collaboration of Music Academy and Dance Academy students (March 23, free). The Colburn School experience is like “baking the cake,” Gilad says. “To take a student, and see the transformation, because of guidance, into a great human and a great player…. We love to bake the cake.” Italian pianist Rodolfo Leone earned a Master of Music at Colburn Conservatory of Music and is now in its Artist Diploma program. A number of faculty members are current or former L.A. Phil players; others come from farther away: One soloist at the Disney Hall concert, Italian pianist Rodolfo Leone, followed his teacher, Fabio Bidini, when Bidini relocated from Berlin to the Colburn School. Leone earned a Master of Music degree at the conservatory and now, at 27, is in its Artist Diploma program. Leone appreciates the chance to play chamber music at Colburn, the abundance of practice rooms and the prep in nonmusical aspects of the profession, such as media-interview training. “A very important part is the weekly performance forum, where three or four people perform and the whole school is invited," he says. The Colburn School has its roots in the piano: It began in 1950 as the Preparatory School, established by USC to offer children piano lessons. As the school grew to include other instruments and ensembles, it attracted the attention of wealthy construction businessman and amateur violist Richard D. Colburn, who became its chief benefactor. The school moved to its current home in 1998 and in 2007 added a second building; it was renamed the Colburn School of Performing Arts, officially the Colburn School, in the 1995-96 school year. The school has performance spaces, notably the 400-seat Herbert Zipper Recital Hall, named for another supporter, as well as rehearsal spaces, student housing and a library and cafe that are open to the public. The curriculum of Colburn’s Trudi Zipper Dance Institute was recently restructured to better achieve 14  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE

PERFORMANCE PARLANCE EVERYDAY WORDS CAN HAVE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MEANINGS WHEN USED IN THE PERFORMING ARTS. by LIBBY SLATE

The first two rows of audience seating at the Broad Stage are semicircular and placed on large wheeled platforms—aka wagons —that can be removed if the space is needed for an orchestra pit or opera or dance staging. Wagons can also be used onstage to move sets. To indicate where sets go and performers stand during a scene, productions use “spike marks,” small pieces of colored tape stuck to the floor. “Anything that needs to be brought on and off stage will have a mark,” says Kevin Williams, properties designer for both the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts in La Mirada and McCoy Rigby Entertainment, which produces the venue’s Broadway series; Singin’ in the Rain plays April 19-May 12. “We could have 15 to 20 colors. You can dictate which colors blend in with a scene but can still be seen [by actors and crew]. Fluorescent orange can be seen in blue The Broad Stage concert shell includes “clouds,” panels high above the performers’ heads that reduce ambient noise and reverberation and direct sound toward the audience.

COURTESY BROAD STAGE

W

HEN IS A STAGE NOT A STAGE? The surface upon which most performances unfold may be known by that word to audiences, but to theater tech folks, it’s the “deck.” The acoustic panels above musicians’ heads at some concert venues are “clouds.” And if you’ve noticed that the configuration of orchestral sections can vary from concert to concert, that’s “American seating” versus “European seating.” Not generally known to patrons, arts lingo makes for interesting vocabulary. Maybe you’ve been seated on “wagons” and not known it. You’ve probably witnessed “practicals” in more than a few plays and musicals. “Each performance genre has its own personality,” says Ernest Figueroa, producer at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, which presents a variety of performances. The “deck” reference for the stage, he explains, is from vaudeville days, when “the only people who knew how to do rigging were seamen, and they worked on the ship’s deck.” 16  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE

[scene] transitional lighting.” Audience members seated in upper levels can also see the spikes. So that no patron sees what’s happening in the wings, narrow curtains on each side of the stage, called “legs,” block the audience’s view. “They can also reduce the size of the stage, to isolate the look toward center stage,” Williams says. “Borders” are shorter curtains across the width of the stage that mask lighting setups and scenery stored above the stage. Lighting props designed to be switched on and off —e.g., lamps, sconces and chandeliers—are called “practicals.” Linens, pillows, set curtains, bedding and other non-wardrobe fabric items are “soft goods.” And onstage food and drink are “consumables,” literally to be consumed by the actors; the term also applies to an item that is destroyed in each performance. Both La Mirada and the Broad Stage present concerts; Figueroa notes that the Broad Stage concert shell includes panels called “clouds”—so-named because they are high above the performers’ heads—that reduce ambient noise and reverberation and direct sound toward the audience. “They look like a wooden ceiling onstage,” Figueroa says. The L.A. Phil doesn’t use a shell for its performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown. On stage, the orchestra is configured in one of two ways: American or European seating. “In American seating, you have the first violins to the left of the conductor, then going clockwise, the second violins, violas, cellos and the basses behind the

violas and cellos,” explains L.A. Phil personnel manager Jeff Neville. In European seating, among other differences, the first and second violins face each other. “Disney Hall was built with the concept of having American seating,” Neville says. “As you look at the orchestra, the two risers on the right-hand side are slightly wider than the left, to compensate for the larger [cello and bass] instruments.” Guest conductors can choose their seating arrangement, though L.A. Phil music and artistic director Gustavo Dudamel has the final say. Neville cites an example: “For larger works, Zubin Mehta likes the violins facing one another,” he says. “You can hear the inner voices more clearly.” However the musicians are seated, their scores bear some lingo of their own. The markings for crescendo (get louder) followed by decrescendo (play softer) over a passage are commonly referred to as “hairpins” and closely resemble those accessories; the same holds true in choral music. Whole notes, an oval shape, are “footballs.” A fermata, indicating a prolonged note or rest, is symbolized by an eyebrow-like arc over a dot—a “bird’s eye.” Violins are usually called “fiddles” in folk music; classical players also use that appellation. Trombones are “bones.” And if you ever find yourself thinking you’re on a wagon, listening to bones under clouds on a deck.... you’ll know you’ve decoded the idioms of the performing arts world.

LAUGHTER

We champion all of life’s moments. What connects us and brings us closer together. All that makes us different, and yet, very much the same. That’s why, for the last 100 years, we’ve provided our communities with the life-changing disability services they need. Today, we honor that legacy with an eye to the future — the next 100 years. And we’re committed to building a world where everyone is 100% included.

All abilities. Limitless possibilities.

FASHION ROW  dRA boutique in the Arts District downtown. MOVING TO NEW YORK USED TO be a prerequisite for emerging fashion designers hoping to advance their careers, but the number of new lines launched in Los Angeles has shifted the industry’s center of gravity westward. A prime example of homegrown success is Diana Ra, whose trendy dRA label has benefited from L.A.’s more nurturing creative community. Born in Brazil to Korean parents, Ra moved to L.A. when she was 10, and the cultural diversity of her background and adopted hometown informs her work. Although her brand features some discreet bohemian

qualities, the prevailing attitude of dRA is contemporary femininity wrapped in casual, versatile elegance. According to its founder, the dRA collection is infused with thoughtful and distinctive details for the young woman who understands that sexy and sophisticated are not mutually exclusive. Ra is inspired by progressive French designers such as Isabel Marant and Vanessa Bruno: “I love how their designs are so detailed and feminine,” she says. “Mostly, I love that effortless French attitude they possess.” More than 200 stores internationally carry Ra’s line; she

When it came time to open her first brick-and-mortar boutique, she chose her hometown, specifically Row DTLA, the 32-acre mixed-used project in the Arts District that also hosts designers Charlotte Stone, Erica Tanov and Micah Cohen. “For an independent Los Angeles-based brand like ours, Row is the perfect community of creatives and creative space,” notes Ra. The intimate, whitewashed interior conveys approachability rather than exclusivity, with industrial-chic pendant lamps hanging from a high, unfinished ceiling above modern furniture and an artisanal coffee table, a vignette that reinforces the living room-like vibe. “I wanted the store to feel comfortable and inviting,” says Ra. “All the furniture and accent pieces are items I’d want in my own home!” In addition to the designer’s

apparel collection, the store features accessories from local women-founded brands, among them Hey Moon Designs and Latin-inspired Nomah Project. Ra’s Hudson dress ($224) is an example of her ability to combine contemporary sensibilities with timeless qualities. With its staggered mid-calf hemline and single shoulder strap with cascading ruffles, the piece is slightly bohemian in spirit; its emerald-green color and floral lace construction add an enduring sense of elegance. Showing a lot more leg below a ruffled hemline, yet balanced against a conservative crew neckline and long sleeves, is the Catherine dress ($138) with adjustable sash waistline, offered in a lively brick-colored sateen. Ra suggests that her prints best represent the dRA brand, and the designer particularly favors her oversized dresses. The flared, mid-length Monique dress ($178) features a sweetheart neckline,

spaghetti straps and low back with lace-up detail in a soft floral printed viscose fabric, conveying a laid-back sophistication that is a signature of the line. The faux-fur Selena jacket ($178), worn by Mila Kunis and Gigi Hadid, has roomy patch pockets and the versatility to be worn seamlessly over a dress or jeans. The crimson hue of the knee-length Kai coat ($224) will get its wearer noticed; an oversized notched collar contributes additional drama. A feminine treatment of an old classic is the Hollie trenchcoat ($188), embellished with subtle ruffling around the collar and running down the front. Offered in navy blue, this piece’s Tencel twill construction is ideal for those cooler L.A. evenings. Ra sees her line of clothing adapting to her clientele as their lives evolve and priorities change. The brand offers something for fresh-out-of-college career girls looking for pieces appropriate for both the office and after-work cocktails as well as more established career women and even stylish moms running from day care to business meetings. “I design for the modern bohemian—she’s strong, independent and a free spirit,” Ra says of her typical customer. “She loves to dress up but never looks overdressed.” —Joseph LeMoyne

UNDERWATER ELEGANCE  Infinity Aquarium Design MANY AMERICANS HAVE childhood memories of nurturing a goldfish in a standard-issue glass bowl, their first experience in caring for another living creature. Grown-up versions of those goldfish bowls can be dazzling aquatic showcases that add drama to a room, and in the luxury real estate market elaborate aquariums are a hot amenity. Representing an elite group of aqua artisans is Los Angelesbased Infinity Aquarium Design. Observing decorative tropical fish shimmering through an artificial aquatic habitat can be mesmerizing, and companies such as Infinity employ unbridled

imagination and advanced technologies to create increasingly larger and more audacious tanks for the home. Nic Tiemens, who founded Infinity in 2004 with Joe Pineda, has parlayed his childhood fascination with the underwater world into a thriving enterprise. His first taste of the business— as a young minimum-wage employee in his native Chicago— was the installation of two massive tanks at the home of NBA superstar Michael Jordan’s house. When he and Pineda launched Infinity, they viewed flashy L.A. as a natural home base. “L.A. is a town all about glamour and

expression, where people love to showcase their personalities in different ways, whether it’s cars or art or architecture,” Tiemens says. Infinity’s co-founders were the original aquarium TV personalities; they starred in HGTV’s reality series Ultimate Aquariums in 2012, one of the public’s earliest glimpses into this intriguing design specialty. “We’ve branded ourselves as the firm where art meets the science of aquariums,” explains the media-savvy Tiemans, who proved to be ahead of his time. Since then, series such as Tanked on Animal Planet and Fish Tank Kings on Nat Geo Wild have introduced viewers to the endless possibilities of aquarium design. Shows focus on celebrity clients including Shaquille O’Neal and David Hasselhoff and sometimes involve antics that detract from the true artistry of the medium. “The installations we’re doing today in high-end residences are more elaborate, both aesthetically and functionally, than those in most public aquariums,” Tiemens says. He explains that homeowners’ increased reliance on interior designers has benefited the residential aquarium business, as those ambitious professionals are constantly looking to enhance spaces with distinctive design elements. Celebrity-favored L.A. interior designer Adam Hunter regularly collaborates with Infinity.

“Aquariums offer such dramatic appeal to any interior because they can instantly become a beautiful focal point, art piece or topic of conversation,” he says. Double-sided tanks are popular; at a Hawaiian-inspired Malibu retreat, Infinity completed a stunning poolside aquarium. “From the basement, you can look through the aquarium into the swimming pool, beyond the bluff and out into the ocean,” Tiemens says of the $80,000 project. At a more intimate home in Westwood, a 15-foot-long tropical riverbed-inspired aquarium is viewed from both the interior and a wood-decked patio. Tiemens explains that outdoor aquariums require additional engineering to moderate temperatures, and in the case of this 900-gallon acrylic aquarium, an automated opaque screen drops down to ensure that the tank does not bake in the sun. A 1,120-gallon aquarium in a Catalina Island home, lining the length of the dining room, features stratified rock and a

water planted aquarium ever installed in a private residence in the United States for a West Hollywood homeowner aspiring to re-create the work of renowned Japanese aquarist Takashi Amano. Compatibility, color and movement are critical considerations when selecting the assortment of fish, according to Tiemens. He favors realistic underwater displays that are natural for their respective species, while presenting a wide variety of colors and motions. Technology has changed the industry, according to the premier L.A. aquarist: Owners or consultants can now monitor the water’s salinity, pH and temperature or manipulate the tank’s pumps from anywhere in the world with the touch of a smartphone. —Roger Grody

wearing a properly fitted, cut and sew, underwire bra made in Europe. The wire rests comfortably under the breast and against the body, encasing all of the breast tissue. She can barely feel it. The band fits snug and level, taking most of the weight off the shoulders. Her breasts are centered and lifted, lengthening the waist, and creating a lean and shapely silhouette.

has gone to a department store to be fitted. They don’t carry her size (32G), so they gave her what they called a “sister size”: 38DD. The band is far too loose and the cup is allowing her breasts to push out at the sides and bottom. The loose band has ridden up to her shoulder blades and all the weight is on her shoulders.

YES, HIGHLAND PARK IS HOT these days, its strategic location, edgy vibe and relatively affordable housing drawing pioneering young residents the way Silver Lake did a generation ago. The most beneficial byproduct of its popularity, for anybody living east of La Brea, is a growing selection of interesting, unpretentious eateries, and among the most notable is Hippo. A venture of talented young chef Matt Molina and partners that include fellow Mozza alum David Rosoff, Hippo shares a little campus-like complex with Triple Beam pizza and a coffee bar. Hippo guests have to walk

past the pizzeria (operated by Molina and Mozza principal Nancy Silverton), engulfed by mouth-watering aromas on their way into the restaurant. Hippo occupies one of those century-old structures with a soaring barrel-shaped ceiling, exposed beams and trusses adding character to the space. On one side is a marble bar dispensing the deftly crafted cocktails of mixologist Clare Ward and a dining counter ideal for walkins or solo diners. It overlooks the unpretentious dining room, whose white walls are covered in a whimsical floral pattern, with polished wood tables illuminated

Starters include a hamachi crudo that makes for a terrific palate-cleansing initiation, with each of four beautifully pinched slices of fish crowned with a small dollop of perfectly tart Meyer lemon-oregano relish and garnished with micro chervil. Though the smoked, marinated beets with burrata are surely good, opt for an incredibly simple presentation of burrata di bufala imported from Lazio. The slightly irregular sphere of cheese is plated with flavorful, high-quality olive oil and a few basil leaves, along with thick grilled slices of fett'unta—grilled bread rubbed with garlic and smothered in olive oil—dusted with crystals of sea salt. This is one of those occasions when great ingredients simply need to be showcased with minimal manipulation. A particularly good choice is triangolini stuffed with celery root puree in a silky shallot-infused butter sauce with chives. Those who remember Molina’s finesse with pasta at Osteria Mozza will not be disappointed with what he has to offer at Hippo. Among entrées are lemon- and caper-seasoned scallops plated with a parsnip puree, grilled chicken thighs spiked with Peruvian ají panca and charred lime, and pancetta-wrapped barbecued quail sweetened with honey. A beautiful, rosy-colored ocean trout is gently cedar-smoked, presented over Umbrian lentils cooked in chicken stock and sofrito, and topped with pickled mushrooms that provide just the right counterpunch to those surprisingly luxurious legumes. Desserts include a delightfully straightforward pot de crème with an assertive espresso flavor, providing just a hint of delicious bitterness, and a classically inspired tarte Tatin created with
