WELCOME

GREETINGS FROM THE LA PHIL

An annual tradition, Opening Night marks the official beginning of summer for generations of music lovers across Los Angeles. Tonight, we are fortunate to have The Moody Blues on hand to help us kick off our season in spectacular fashion. Like their fellow British Invasion compatriots, The Moody Blues have lit up the hearts and minds of millions of music lovers for five decades. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under the direction of Principal Conductor Thomas Wilkins, will share the stage, helping The Moody Blues celebrate the 50th anniversary of their groundbreaking record Days of Future Passed — the first rock album to feature a symphony orchestra. Proceeds from Opening Night will benefit the LA Phil’s Education and Community Initiatives, which serve more than 150,000 children and their families each year. Included among these programs is Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s signature initiative, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this season. Students and alumni from YOLA are on stage tonight, performing alongside the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Thank you for supporting great music and the LA Phil as we usher in our 96th season at the Hollywood Bowl. We hope to see you many times throughout what promises to be another extraordinary summer under the stars. Enjoy the concert. YOLA

10TH ANNIVERSARY YOUTH ORCHESTRA LOS ANGELES Tonight, a group of talented players from Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) will be performing side-by-side with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. They may be high school students, but their accomplishments are no less impressive than those of any of the professional musicians you’ll hear this evening. They have performed at London’s Barbican Centre and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. They have shared stages with too many superstars to name, so we’ll list just three: Stevie Wonder, Sir Simon Rattle, and Beyoncé. Through YOLA – Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel’s signature program – the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. This year marks the program’s 10th anniversary season and tonight’s concert kicks off what will be YOLA’s busiest summer yet. Students will be playing the National Anthem at Dodger Stadium on July 5 and returning to the Bowl to perform with Dudamel on the Sondheim on Sondheim program on July 23 and for Cumbia at the Bowl on September 16. Musicians featured in these events have auditioned, and earned the distinction of representing YOLA and their peers. They are just the tip of the iceberg – YOLA’s community-focused programming provides 800 students across three sites with intensive music study and academic support up to 18 hours each week, 40 weeks of the year. In addition to playing on the world’s biggest stages, YOLA’s students are thriving socially and academically. Its upperclassmen are attending top performing arts high schools. The program’s alumni have been accepted to four-year colleges and conservatories across the country. “It has been a dream to see YOLA grow and to watch how these students have

changed on an artistic level and as citizens,” Dudamel has said. Inspired by Dudamel’s belief in the orchestra as metaphor for community, YOLA’s students, families, and neighborhoods have rallied around the program. Its spring concerts fill Walt Disney Concert Hall with adoring fans. County Supervisor Hilda Solis – a proud supporter of YOLA – has identified it as a “powerful initiative that… addresses the important issues of equity and inclusion.” At the heart of the program is a group of students whose dedication to and belief in the power of music is unwavering. “Our small classes feel more like a family than a class. Our teachers have taught us so much more than music,” Juliana Rodriguez, 18, a recent YOLA graduate said. “You have to have a constantly changing approach to things,” YOLA alum Daniel Egwurube, 19, advises. “Whenever something fails, try another way. They showed us how to beat life, just by showing us how to practice.”

YOLA is a partnership of the LA Phil; the EXPO Center, a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility; the Harmony Project; the Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA); and the Los Angeles County Office of Education. To learn more about YOLA, visit LAPhil. com/YOLA. Leadership support for the LA Phil’s Education and Community Initiatives is provided by the Peggy Bergmann YOLA Endowment Fund, The Walt Disney Company, Anonymous, Andy & Bill Concerts LLC, Los Angeles Philharmonic Committee, Lee and Hope Landis Warner YOLA Student Fund, Norma D. ABOUT THE ARTISTS

As THE MOODY BLUES embark on the 50th Anniversary tour of their iconic, landmark album, Days of Future Passed, the band reflects back on five decades of some of the most beloved music in pop culture history. Performing the epic album that marked the first time a rock band had fused their sound with a symphony orchestra, The Moody Blues bring to audiences a first-ever live experience of the full album, onstage, when they hit the road in 2017. Fans will have waited 50 years to experience this moment in time, as in 1967, the band’s first full-length studio album, Days of Future Passed, was a ground-breaking concept album. So unique in its approach, the recording became a landmark moment in time. Their record label, Decca Records, had requested that the band record an album to test “stereo recording,” which was in its infancy at the time. Decca being primarily a classical label, the band was asked to record a rock version of Dvorˇák’s 9th Symphony. The band complied, but wanted to record it on their own terms. Behind closed doors, they came up with the concept of fusing classical music with rock, but written to their own soundtrack. The result was Days of Future Passed, an album that today is considered a masterpiece. From Days, the song “Tuesday Afternoon” became a massive worldwide hit, and “Nights in White Satin” marked one of the first four-minute songs played on the radio, going on to become one of the biggest selling singles in history, and hitting No. 1 three separate times on Billboard. The ultimate result: one of the greatest-selling albums of all time. Since they first hit the rock scene, The Moody Blues have continued to produce music that bridges the gap between rock, classical, and pop-rock genres without ever wavering in their integrity and commitment. Featuring the altruistic inflections of guitarist/vocalist Justin Hayward, bassist/ vocalist John Lodge, and drummer Graeme Edge, The Moody Blues’ sound has held its ground with exquisite harmonies

over and over again, in a genre of music that is ever-changing. Since their formation in England, The Moody Blues have created music time and time again that offers rock music a depth that is unprecedented and inspiring. The Moody Blues have sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide and have been awarded an astonishing 14 platinum and gold discs. Their incredible roster of hits includes “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Ride My See Saw,” “The Story in Your Eyes,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” “Question,” “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band),” “Your Wildest Dreams,” and “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere,” to name a few. The Moody Blues’ No. 1, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, Top 40, Multi-Platinum, Platinum, and Gold albums and singles have generated sold-out tours on a consistent basis over the course of several decades, making them one of the top-grossing album and touring bands in existence. The Moody Blues have distinguished themselves through five decades as that shimmering jewel vindicating rock music and as a substantial artistic contribution to Western culture. Says Rolling Stone: “The Moody Blues are still the Sistine Chapel of popular music.” Since the ’60s, as a part of the historic original British invasion of super groups, The Moody Blues have lit up the hearts and minds of millions of rock fans with inspiring anthems such as “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon” and “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band),” which express universal themes of love, compassion, and peace. The band’s unique style of music consistently finds airplay on radio stations globally, and continues to illuminate concert arenas around the world. From being immortalized on The Simpsons to having their music featured in movies, television, and in national advertisement campaigns, The Moody Blues are embedded in not only music history but in pop culture.

Music moves us We all have our favorite song, one that connects us to a special memory or makes us come alive. Wells Fargo is proud, once again, to sponsor Opening Night at the Hollywood Bowl, benefiting the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s education and community programs. We congratulate the LA Phil on their extraordinary efforts, and we applaud this year’s artist, The Moody Blues.

We’re proud to celebrate the arts in Los Angeles and wish everyone a wonderful evening. wellsfargo.com © 2016 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. All rights reserved. Member FDIC. (2580701_18014)

This season, discover new food and wine options, along with the return of favorite dishes from their acclaimed menus.

THE BACKYARD

THE WINE BAR BY A.O.C.

Inspired by the gorgeous natural surroundings of the Bowl, this al fresco space has the feel of a chic backyard in the Hollywood Hills. Two large wood-burning grills are the focus of this farmers’ market-driven restaurant serving grilled fish, chops, steaks, vegetables, salads, and raw bar items.

Inspired by the original A.O.C. on 3rd St., the Wine Bar features a wide selection of Caroline’s favorite New- and Old-World wines to be explored by both experienced and novice wine lovers, all paired with Suzanne Goin’s signature small plates menu. Reservations recommended.

It’s easier than ever to enjoy a picnic supper before your concert with four menus of delectable fresh-made picnic boxes from Food + Wine. Simply pre-order online and your choice will be waiting for you when you arrive at the Bowl.

LUCQUES AT THE CIRCLE Fine dining for subscribers of the Pool Circle, with a seasonal madeto-order menu and exceptional wine list, styled from the awardwinning restaurant Lucques.

KITCHEN 22 Kitchen 22 is the best place to indulge in fan favorites like burgers, French fries, fried chicken, specialty sandwiches, and salads.

“City National helps keep my financial life in tune.” So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship. City National is The way up® for me.
