Dear Friends and Supporters,
As we step into February, a month rich with celebration and connection, we are grateful for the love of the performing arts that binds our community together.
At the heart of our mission is the belief that introducing children to theater at a young age can ignite their imaginations and foster empathy. This month, we are thrilled to present the world premiere of The Musicians of Bremen Live!, co-produced by Segerstrom Center for the Arts and Cahoots NI, as part of our Family Series.
This enchanting production, inspired by the much-loved Grimm’s fairy tale and set in the American Southwest, is not only a testament to the incredible talent of our artists but also a reflection of our commitment to co-commissioning and co-producing innovative works that resonate with audiences of all ages. We are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of theatergoers and artists, ensuring that the performing arts remain a vibrant part of their lives.

It was a Candlelight Concert like no other. On December 6, 2024, the Center celebrated the 50th anniversary of this gala event. Candlelight Concert co-chairs Stephanie Argyros and John Ginger headed the spectacular evening that originally started before the Center had laid a cornerstone for Segerstrom Hall.
It was truly a golden party. Renowned producer and songwriter David Foster was the evening’s master of ceremonies. With his wife, singer Katharine McPhee, by the piano, they entertained with Christmas carols before the chairs came out to welcome guests.
Then the iconic Sir Elton John sat down at the piano for what became a 90-minute performance that had guests on their feet singing and dancing along with his greatest hits. He was a triumph and made it a truly special concert worthy of this special anniversary.
The original Candlelight Concert was held in 1974. The committee was given the loan of an empty dime store with no electricity, so the event was lit with candles to hide the room’s many imperfections. It was a big success and has been held every year since. The tradition of dining on the Segerstrom Hall stage began in 1996, and dining tables are decorated with elaborate centerpieces, flower arrangements and, of course, lots of candles.
Candlelight Concert has raised more than $80 million to support the Center’s array of outstanding entertainment, education and community engagement programs, including Summer at the Center, Disney Musicals in Schools and Studio D, impacting the lives of a million people annually. This year’s event took in a record $19.2 million.
Thank you to our evening’s sponsors, including luxury jewelry sponsor Lugano. The Center deeply appreciates its incredibly generous patrons whose unwavering support inspires and sustains us.

There is lots of magic for children at the Center next month in our Family Series!
The Explorer Series, for children ages 7 and up, will be amazed and astonished by The Magic City. Nine-year-old Philomena’s life is turned upside down when a big change comes into her world. The story comes alive through the magic of Manual Cinema, a Chicago-based group that uses projectors, puppets, actors, sound design, and a live music ensemble to create an all-new theater experience along with the actors.
Philomena is an orphan who is living happily with her much older sister, whom she adores. But things change when her sister becomes engaged to Brandon, who comes with a 7-yearold son named Lucas. Philomena is horrified that she is expected to be friends with this annoying little boy but is also fearful she will lose her close relationship with her sister. She hides away and creates a tiny city for herself with found items. But one night her special city comes to life and she finds herself trapped inside. How will she escape, and will she let her family help her?
“The Magic City features an overall heartfelt message about understanding and appreciating those who are different,” says the Adelaide Review
The Discovery Series, for children ages 4–8, continues with Underneath a Magical Moon. This sparkling new production invites you to fly into a fantastical world of adventure.
In this imaginative re-telling of the famous play, the story of Peter Pan is told from Wendy’s point of view, and the children are the creators of the story.
The Darling children are camping in their own back garden on a warm summer’s night. Wendy gazes at the moon and begins to tell her brothers a story. Someone seems to toss fairy dust over their tent, and their imaginations take flight, while Wendy creates a story using objects around them. With sleeping bags and swim caps covered with plastic flowers, they become mermaids. They create a pirate ship and become Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, an alligator, a Lost Boy. “Amazing things can happen underneath a magical moon,” the children sing.
The Center is offering a sensory-friendly/ relaxed performance of Underneath a Magical Moon for the March 15 performance at 10 am. This is designed specifically for audience members who will benefit from a more relaxed sensory environment.
All this magic reminds us that we can create our own magic with our family and friends, anytime and anyplace. These performances can show you how.

Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs, To Be or Not To Be, The Producers and One Magic Christmas. He was a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild.
MARTIN CHARNIN (Lyrics). Martin’s career in the entertainment industry began in 1957 when he created the role of Big Deal (one of Jerome Robbins’ authentic juvenile delinquents) in the original company of West Side Story. He played the role for exactly 1,000 performances. Since then, he was involved in over 140 theatrical, television, film, and night club productions as a director, producer, composer, or lyricist. He is one of the dozen people who have won Emmys, Tonys, and Grammys, and the Peabody Award for Broadcasting. Annie, which came to Broadway in 1977, originally ran for 2,377 performances, and has been revived there three times. He directed Annie 19 times (after directing the original production in New York), in London, Montreal, Amsterdam, and Melbourne as well as Annie’s 14 national U.S. companies. He collaborated with Charles Strouse, Vernon Duke, Marvin Hamlisch, Mary Rodgers, and twice with Richard Rodgers on I Remember Mama and Two by Two. He wrote for, or directed, Fred Astaire, Ethel Merman, Jack Lemmon, Ann-Margaret, Jack Benny, Anne Bancroft, Betty Hutton, Sutton Foster, Sarah Jessica Parker, Catherine ZetaJones, Bebe Neuwirth, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Larry Kert, Chita Rivera, Jane Lynch, Tony Bennett, Jason Alexander, and Jay-Z, among countless others, and for his wife, Shelly Burch (who originated a leading role in the original company of Nine). Most recently, “Tomorrow” from Annie became one of the 100 most performed musical numbers in the last century.
CHARLES STROUSE (Music). A graduate of New York’s P.S. 87, Townsend Harris H.S., and the Eastman School of Music, Charles has studied composition with Aaron Copland, Arthur Berger, and David Diamond in the US and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Charles has composed copious chamber music, two piano concertos, a string quartet and two operas. After which, being broke like most composers, he was a rehearsal pianist and dance arranger for many shows, played in bar rooms, ballet classes, at weddings and strip joints (a particular boon for one who was to write the music for the film The
Night They Raided Minsky’s). One morning in 1960 he awoke to find he had written (with Lee Adams and Mike Stewart) Bye Bye Birdie (Tony Award), which is still among the most performed musicals in America, followed by Golden Boy with Sammy Davis, Jr. (Tony Nomination). Then came, Applause (Tony Award), It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman, Rags (Tony Nomination) and Annie (Tony Award). In-between, there have been scores for movies including Bonnie and Clyde and All Dogs Go to Heaven. Throughout his career, Charles has received the Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Frederick Lowe and the Leonard Bernstein Awards for musical achievement. He is married to director/ choreographer Barbara Siman and is the father of Benjamin (attorney, author, composer), Nicholas (psychotherapist), Victoria (screen writer) and William (also a screen writer).

Fans of Baroque music are in for a special treat when Théotime Langlois De Swarte and Les Arts Florissants team up to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Antonio Vivaldi’s iconic The Four Seasons. Vivaldi was an influential composer in his lifetime and is considered to rank among the greatest Baroque composers of his day, including Johann Sebastian Bach.
Last season Langlois De Swarte and his quartet, Le Consort, made their debut at the Center to great acclaim, and fans demanded a return engagement. For this enticing visit he will perform with Les Arts Florissants, founded by American-French conductor William Christie in 1979, who has played a pioneering role in bringing attention to European music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The ensemble of exceptional musicians performs on period instruments and is one of the most renowned and respected early music in the world. “Les Arts Florrissants have revolutionized the way Baroque music is presented,” says Opera News.
Vivaldi was actually an ordained priest, but that didn’t hinder his massive outpouring of music. The Four Seasons is Vivaldi’s most wellknown composition: Even people unfamiliar with classical music can say, “Oh, yeah, I’ve heard that.” Written between 1718–1720, Vivaldi was able to evoke each season’s sound. Listeners can almost feel the cold winds and warm fires of winter, or the singing birds and hunting parties of spring.
Vivaldi might be surprised that today Seasons is one of the most popular pieces of
concert music. When he died in 1741 his output included 500 concertos and 46 operas, but his music by then was considered old-fashioned. For two centuries, many thought his music had been destroyed in continental wars or thrown away, including The Four Seasons. But in the early 20th century, musicologists began to discover these long-lost manuscripts. Fifteen volumes of his work were found in an Italian monastery. Many works were discovered among collections of other composers’ works.
As they began to be played, Vivaldi came to the fore again, and today, fans of Baroque music can’t get enough. For this program, there will be additional works by Vivaldi as well as by Monteverdi and Geminiani, music Vivaldi would have heard in Venice, and pieces that were inspired by the master’s vision.
Langlois de Swarte entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 17, focusing on modern violin, but he couldn’t ignore his love of Baroque. A year later he auditioned and won a place in Les Arts Florissants. Although it might not have been the best fit for him, the experience confirmed for Langlois de Swarte that his heart was firmly with Baroque works. “I realized I wanted to find forgotten composers and express myself through their music as if it were mine, composed yesterday,” he told The Strad. (He is close friends with Christie, who lives in France and has French citizenship.)
“Théotime Langlois de Swarte reminds me why I fell in love with the Baroque violin … His playing is joyful; it is wild and beautiful, inventive and efficient,” says Gramaphone
Langlois de Swarte told The Strad he continues his search to “find music that hasn’t been heard. There is so much music, even by Vivaldi, that has remained buried in libraries.” In the meantime, this concert should fill any Baroque lover’s musical appetite.
Samueli Theater March 23
The acclaimed chamber ensemble Calidore String Quartet returns to Samueli Theater with a program of works by Beethoven and Korngold and a world premiere by acclaimed composer Han Lash.
The quartet is recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of a vast chamber music repertoire, from Beethoven to Mendelssohn to works of celebrated contemporary composers.
In less than 15 years the quartet has made a name for itself internationally and reaped great reviews. The Calidore has been praised by The New York Times for its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct,” while the Washington Post writes that “four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think and feel as one.”
“It has now developed its own unique sound and personality,” says the Calgary Herald “Different from other North American quartets, the Calidore String Quartet has a more intimate, less extroverted personality. The emphasis in the playing is on a refined balance among the instruments, on warmth of tone, on gentleness, and unfailing poise.”
The Center program includes the world premiere of String Quartet No. 3 by Lash, commissioned by Center Chamber Music patrons Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting. (The Schlichtings also commissioned String
Quartets No. 1 and 2, which were premiered at the Center.) Lash has received commissions by many orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
The ensemble, now based in New York City, performs in renowned venues the world over, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, and in Germany, Amsterdam, Brussels, Estonia and Seoul, South Korea.
The Calidore has been a recipient of a 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award. They first made international headlines as winner of the $100,000 Grand Prize of the inaugural 2016 M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition. In 2016, the quartet was the first North American ensemble to win the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. Most recently they have been the winners of the BBC Music Magazine 2024 Chamber Award for their recording The Late Quartets of Beethoven
Whether it’s one of the heritage composers or a contemporary composition, the Calidore hits all the right notes. This is an opportunity to join their continuing journey forward as one of our most talented string quartets.
Samueli Theater March 6
Everyone remembers when they first heard “Seasons of Love,” a song that may have brought tears to their eyes. Rent was a musical that touched many lives and became an iconic touchstone to a generation. Thirty years later, Rent in Concert comes to the Center with a stellar cast of singers and symphonic orchestra.
Rent was a snapshot of a certain time and place in New York City. Composer Jonathan Larson set Rent in lower Manhattan’s bohemian East Village in the mid-1990s. Larson passed away suddenly the night before the preview opening, but he won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and Rent won three Tony Awards.
The musical “spoke” to a new audience of musical theatre fans, showing their world, their interests and problems. It had the old-school Broadway fans howling that a rock band was not the appropriate Broadway music. But it takes nothing away from the beauty and tragedy of this musical to hear it with an orchestra backing.
“Rentheads,” as the rabid fans were called, have now grown up. Musical theater actors have used these songs for auditions, and innumerable high schools have performed it. Rent in Concert will be a special evening of nostalgia and beautiful music.

The swirling skirts of the women, the sombreros of the men, the trumpets and violins of the mariachi band—this is Ballet Folklórico de México. For more than 60 years, this dance ensemble has performed dances that reflect the traditions, cultures and beliefs of the individual regions of Mexico. The company returns to the Center in March.
The company was founded in 1952 by Amalia Hernández. Her experience at the Mexican Academy of Dance inspired her to create her own company. She was especially interested in traditional Mexican dances and those that reflected the traditions of indigenous Mesoamerican culture. They were given an opportunity to perform on a television show and ended up with a regular weekly spot.
Eventually the group started touring internationally, including representing Mexico at the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago. Their popularity impressed the president of Mexico, who enabled Hernández to gain a weekly performance spot at the historic Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. The Ballet continues to perform there twice a week.
But you don’t have to travel any farther than the Center to experience this dance phenomenon. The company now has 75 dancers, who perform the real, historic dances, not just a version that the tourists want to see.
Whether it’s “The Dance of the Deer” or “Jarabe Tapatio,” the famous hat dance that symbolizes a romantic courtship, the performances highlight the authentic Mexico. There are many folklorico companies out there, but Ballet Folklórico de México is the original and the best. Don’t miss this.

A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in love with language. —W. H. Auden
Is there no end to number of awards poet Tracy K. Smith has won in just 20 years? She has a Pulitzer Prize, served as Poet Laureate of the United State from 2017–2020, has garnered a Guggenheim Fellowship, Harvard Arts Medal, New England Book Award, James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets, the Columbia Medal of Excellence, a Smithsonian Ingenuity Award, was a finalist for the Griffin Poetry Prize, and the list goes on. “[Tracy K. Smith is] one of the finest poets writing right now,” says the Miami Herald
Smith will be our guest for In Conversation in March. Since her first published book in 2003, she has been steadily growing her audience with her poetic language: forceful, intelligent and musical. And like the best poets, Smith has used her writing to ask questions that have intrigued her the most about our world.
Growing up in Northern California, Smith read Emily Dickinson while she was in elementary school. In her memoir she wrote about “how the rhyme and meter made Dickinson’s poetry feel absurdly easy to memorize.” It inspired Smith to write a poem, which she showed to her 5th grade teacher. The instructor encouraged her to
continue her writing. She has certainly done her teacher proud.
Smith has written five volumes of poetry. Her most famous is Life on Mars, which won her the Pulitzer. Mars was composed as an ode to her engineer father who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. “The spiritual motif running through these poems adds a stunning dimension that will please many readers,” says the Library Journal
Her newest publication is both a family memoir and a history: To Free the Captives: A Plea for the American Soul. “She bares her soul to understand her family’s story as it relates to the violence and subjugation of the Black community within American history,” says Time magazine.
From Smith’s visit to the Alabama town where her father’s family originates to the freedom she has gained as a professor and writer today, Smith questions how America has adjusted to the past 400 years since the first Blacks were brought to this country, uplifting the subject with her exquisite writing. “Dazzling and exacting,” says The Washington Post
“Whether she’s in her father’s home of Sunflower, Ala., or teaching at Harvard, Smith reminds all Americans that without Black history, none of us have any history at all,” says the Los Angeles Times.
Smith received her BA degree from Harvard and an MFA from Columbia University. In addition to her writing she held a number of teaching positions, including University of Pittsburgh, Columbia, Princeton University before returning to Harvard to teach English, and African and African American studies.
Like all great writers, her eloquence and passion for her subjects draw her readers in, and in person she will be just as captivating and insightful. You won’t want to miss this conversation.
