WELCOME!
The holiday season is a time to celebrate with loved ones, reflect on the year, and share in a spirit of giving and gratitude. This season, we are rediscovering the joy of celebrating with one another. Holiday traditions are taking on extra meaning as we cherish them all that much more.
One of the most meaningful moments for Gustavo Dudamel and all of us this year came earlier this fall with the opening of the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center in Inglewood. The YOLA Center is the first purpose-built home for all of our YOLA musicians. It will host up to 500 new young musicians and provide a space for music educators from across the U.S. and around the world to collaborate and learn. Fourteen years ago, YOLA started with a class of 50 students with a goal of providing music education and youth empowerment opportunities in our community. Today, this program serves more than 1,300 musicians. We are grateful to the city of Inglewood for welcoming us, to our donors whose generosity made the Beckmen YOLA center possible, and to all our YOLA families who share in this journey.
Whether you buy a ticket to an LA Phil concert or generously donate to our efforts, thank you. You make it possible not only to put on the concert that is about to start but for the LA Phil to make an impact in our community beyond our stages. From our LA family to yours, we hope your holiday season is filled with joy and music.

LETTER FROM THE CEO
GUSTAVO DUDAMEL
Gustavo Dudamel is driven by the belief that music has the power to transform lives, to inspire, and to change the world. Through his dynamic presence on the podium and his tireless advocacy for arts education, Dudamel has introduced classical music to new audiences around the world and has helped to provide access to the arts for countless people in underserved communities. As the Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, now in his 12th season, Dudamel’s bold programming and expansive vision led The New York Times to herald the LA Phil as “the most important orchestra in America—period.”
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dudamel has committed even more time and energy to his mission of bringing music to people across the globe, firm in his conviction that the arts play an essential role in creating a more just, peaceful, and integrated society. A landmark event was the highly anticipated launch of Symphony, a touring virtual reality project in collaboration with “la Caixa” Foundation that features Dudamel and 101 musicians from 22 countries in a state-of-the-art, immersive VR film experience. The free touring exhibition, housed in two mobile pop-up cinemas, launched in Barcelona and will travel to hundreds of towns across Spain and Portugal in order to allow tens of thousands of people to have access to the power of symphonic music.
In April 2021, it was announced that Dudamel would join the Paris Opera as its next Music Director, for six seasons beginning in August 2021. Dudamel has led more than 30 staged, semi-staged, and concert productions across the world’s major stages, including five staged
productions with Teatro alla Scala, productions at the Berlin and Vienna State Operas, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and 13 operas in Los Angeles, with repertoire ranging from Così fan tutte to Carmen, from Otello to Tannhäuser, from West Side Story to contemporary operas by composers like John Adams and Oliver Knussen. As part of his inaugural season as Music Director of the Paris Opera, in fall 2021 Dudamel will conduct performances of Puccini’s Turandot and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro
Following his U.S. debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005, Dudamel became the orchestra’s music director starting in the 2009/10 season, and under his direction the LA Phil has secured its place as one of the leading orchestras in the world. Inspired by El Sistema, Dudamel, the LA Phil, and its community partners founded YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) in 2007, now providing 1,300 young people with free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic support, and leadership training. In fall of 2021, YOLA opened its own permanent, purpose-built facility: The Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry.
One of the few classical musicians to become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon, Dudamel will conduct the score to Bernstein’s iconic score for Steven Spielberg’s new adaptation of West Side Story. His extensive, multiple-Grammy Award®-winning discography includes 57 releases, including recent Deutsche Grammophon LA Phil recordings of the complete Charles Ives symphonies and Andrew Norman’s Sustain (both of which won the
— The New York Times’ Zachary Woolfe and Laura
Grammy Award® for Best Orchestral Performance).
Dudamel’s advocacy for the power of music to unite, heal, and inspire is global in scope. Shaped by his transformative experience as a youth in Venezuela’s immersive musical training program El Sistema, he created the Dudamel Foundation in 2012 with the goal “to expand access to music and the arts by providing tools and opportunities for young people to shape their creative futures.”

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC
The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, presents an inspiring array of music through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. Both at home and abroad, the LA Phil—recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras—is leading the way in groundbreaking and diverse programming, on stage and in the community, that reflects the orchestra’s artistry and demonstrates its vision. 2021/22 marks the orchestra’s 103rd season.
More than 250 concerts are either performed or presented by the LA Phil at its three iconic venues: the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Ford, and the famed Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with approximately 165 performances, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the audience’s experience of orchestral music. Since 1922, its summer home has been the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all
genres of music. Situated in a 32-acre park and under the stewardship of the LA Phil since December 2019, The Ford presents an eclectic summer season of music, dance, film, and family events that are reflective of the communities that comprise Los Angeles.
The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond its venues, with wide-ranging performances in the schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its influential and multifaceted learning initiatives is YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music instruction, and leadership training to nearly 1,300 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. In fall of 2021, YOLA opened its own permanent, purpose-built facility: the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry.
The orchestra also undertakes
tours, both domestically and internationally, including regular visits to New York, London (where the orchestra is the Barbican Centre’s International Orchestral Partner), Paris, and Tokyo. As part of its global Centennial activities, the orchestra visited Seoul, Tokyo, Mexico City, London, Boston, and New York. The LA Phil’s first tour was in 1921, and the orchestra has made annual tours since the 1969/70 season.
The LA Phil has released an array of critically acclaimed recordings, including world premieres of the music of John Adams and Louis Andriessen, along with Grammy® Award-winning recordings featuring the music of Johannes Brahms, Charles Ives, and Andrew Norman. Deutsche Grammophon has released a comprehensive box set in honor of the orchestra’s Centennial.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a wealthy amateur musician. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, 10 renowned conductors have served in that capacity. Their names are: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); A rtur Rodziński (1929-1933); O tto Klemperer (1933-1939); A lfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

NEW DUDAMEL CONDUCTING FELLOWS
Earlier this fall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced four conductors who will participate in the 2021/22 Dudamel Fellowship Program: François López-Ferrer, Chloé van Soeterstède, Camilo Téllez, and Enluis Montes Olivar. “I am so deeply proud of all that we have achieved with our Fellows program, and it gives me great inspiration to welcome such a diverse group of talented young conductors to Los Angeles,” said Gustavo Dudamel. “What makes our program so unique is the way that it goes beyond the concert hall and into the community, serving as a center of culture and education for the entire city. I look forward to welcoming, working with, and integrating them into our LA Phil family.”
The Fellows will work alongside Dudamel and LA Phil musicians, as well as visiting artists and conductors, and will also engage with students in key LA Phil learning programs. The program for each of the Fellows will run separately. The Fellows will hone their skills through observation and application, participating as both cover conductors and as conductors, and serving as mentors themselves through participation in programs such as YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles).
FRANÇOIS LÓPEZ-FERRER
Spanish-American conductor François López-Ferrer came to international attention after a critically acclaimed debut at the 2018 Verbier Festival, where he substituted for Iván Fischer in a shared program with Sir Simon Rattle and Gábor Takács-Nagy.
As Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and the May Festival, he conducts the CSO’s Young People’s Concerts and provides artistic support to the CSO’s Music Director, Louis Langrée, and the May Festival’s Principal Conductor, Juanjo Mena. López-Ferrer is one of six participants to be featured in the 2022 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. He previously served for two years as associate conductor of
the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Chile (OSNCH) and Principal Conductor of the Ballet Nacional Chileno, and he was the youngestever Conductor-in-Residence of the OSNCH’s summer concert series.
López-Ferrer holds a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, under the tutelage of professor Aurélien Azan Zielinski, and a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where his teachers included Joel Hoffman, Miguel Roig-Francoli, and Michael Fiday.
CHLOÉ VAN SOETERSTÈDE
Chloé van Soeterstède is attracting the attention of orchestras across the globe for her intuitive, sensitive, expressive music making and her charming and positive presence on the podium. She is praised repeatedly for her attention to detail, her energy and enthusiasm, and her efficiency in rehearsal. Many orchestras are re-inviting her, and the coming seasons will bring many debuts across Europe and North America.

LOS ANGELES” — Gustavo Dudamel
In 2019, she conducted the world premiere of Benjamin Attahir’s Syrian Voices in France and regularly programs works by contemporary composers such as Jessie Montgomery, Roxanna Panufnik, Annamaria Kowalsky, and Anna Meredith. At the 2019 Deutscher Diringentenpreis in Cologne, she was awarded the Bärenreiter Prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work, as well as third prize overall. In 2012, she founded the Arch Sinfonia, a chamber orchestra based in London, which has been applauded for its vibrant and boundless energy, its wide range of repertoire, and its initiatives to build bridges between artists and audiences.
Van Soeterstède was born in 1988 in France. After studying viola in Paris and then at London’s Royal Academy of Music, she studied conducting with Clark Rundell and Mark Heron at the Royal Northern College of Music (2015–2017), where she was awarded the Kennedy scholarship and was also supported by the Derek Hill Foundation. In 2019, she was appointed the Taki Concordia Fellow 2019–21 by Marin Alsop.

Téllez is passionate about the power of social transformation through music. In 2017/18, he served as Music Director of 40 Horas, an El Sistema-inspired outreach program supported by the Colombian government to foster talent in economically disenfranchised areas of his hometown of Bogotá. Téllez founded a symphony orchestra for local youth and a children’s choir that performed in venues across Bogotá. Through his work, he has brought music to some of the most vulnerable communities in the United States and Latin America.
A staunch advocate for new music and the celebration of contemporary Latin American composers, Téllez frequently conducts the contemporary music ensemble Alia Musica in Pittsburgh.
Téllez holds a master’s degree in orchestral conducting from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and an Artist Diploma from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He studied piano performance and orchestral conducting, graduating with honors from the Juan N. Corpas University in Bogotá.
ENLUIS MONTES OLIVAR
Belonging to the new generation of young conductors of El Sistema, Venezuelan musician Enluis Montes Olivar has an innovative spirit in search for new sounds. His repertoire is wide and includes composers from classicism through romanticism, contemporary music, and new musical genres. Furthermore, as a Venezuelan, he enjoys taking Latin American repertoire wherever he performs.
After the death of maestro José Antonio Abreu in March 2018, Enluis was responsible for conducting one of the most numerous orchestras and choirs in the world, made up of 10,771 musicians, in what was the posthumous tribute to the founder of El Sistema de Orquesta y Coros Venezuelan.
He began formal studies of orchestral conducting with Teresa Hernández in 2011, followed by José Antonio Abreu in 2012, under whose guidance he received his most comprehensive training as a musician. During these latter studies, he joined the Academic Training Program for Young Musicians, Teachers and Directors of El Sistema, where he studied with countless teachers, including under the guidance of Gregory Carreño and Franka Verhagen. Enluis was sponsored by the HILTI Foundation to attend the El Sistema Orchestral Conducting School and the Inocente Carreño Itinerant Music Conservatory, under the tutelage of Pablo Castellanos and Dick van Gasteren.

DUDAMEL WITH BILLIE EILISH
County of Los Angeles BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Billie Eilish joined Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil on Sound/Stage this fall to talk music, visit YOLA musicians, and share a performance from her recent Disney+ concert film, Happier than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, which features the Grammy® Award-winning singer with Dudamel and the LA Phil on stage at the Hollywood Bowl.
Eilish grew up in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood singing with the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and is an advocate for youth music education. In August, she and her musical partner and brother FINNEAS worked with the Fender Play Foundation to donate ukuleles and music instruction to 10 elementary schools in Highland Park.
In her Sound/Stage episode, Eilish took a tour of the newly opened Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center in Inglewood, the first purpose-built home and newest site of the Dudamel-led program. As part of that, Eilish took in a performance of her song “Your
Power” by YOLA musicians and talked with Gustavo about how Los Angeles and her experiences in youth music programs shaped the artist she is today.
GUSTAVO DUDAMEL: [We’re here with young musicians], and you were one of them growing up in Los Angeles. How did that [impact] you?
BILLIE EILISH: I think that I really would not be anybody that I am without LA, and I feel this strong connection to this place, the people that I grew up with, and the things that I was able to get just because of where we live, you know. But it’s also tough because everybody’s here, and everybody else wants to do it, too. So you kind of have to weave your way in there.
GD: In a world that is very individualistic, we learn individually, but with an orchestra or a musical team, our goal at the end is to play together, and that is something that is a beautiful symbol. And you support programs [focused on youth music education,

The conductor and singer discuss their shared belief in the power of music education
including the Fender Play Together Campaign.] Now tell us about that initiative that you have, because I think it’s very important.
BE: I don’t think it’s fair for anybody not to be given the same opportunities that anybody else could be given. And I wanted to just make sure that everybody gets access to instruments and music. And that’s why I love this place [the Beckmen YOLA Center].
GD: Inclusion through beauty. BE: Yes
GD: I think that is the thing… to be inspired. We can cross difficult times. We can struggle, but if we have the opportunity to have something: an instrument, a voice, a body that can express and can transform that feeling [into] something, that can give us the opportunity to make our dreams… When was that moment for you? When was the genesis that [started] everything and made you say, “Look, this is what I want to do?”
BE: I think I was 13, and I was in
[the Los Angeles Children’s Choir.]
We were doing a show with [the LA Phil] at the Hollywood Bowl. I remember having this terrifying worry that I wouldn’t be able to be in the choir anymore. And I remember looking at you—it’s crazy that it was you. I was looking at you, looking around at my friends in my choir, and looking out at the Hollywood Bowl sobbing, and I was thinking, “I’m never going to get to do this again, and this is what I want to do.” And I can’t tell you how bad it hurt to feel like that, just the idea of this beautiful music that I was going to be taken away from if I had to quit. I was so aware of how much I loved music and how it changed my life. And I think that that was a real eye-opening moment for me.
GD: I think that is the power of the art. You know, that is not advice that somebody tells you. It’s only the beauty and power of the sound and the action of sharing that with other people.
BE: I feel that I’ve never had quite
the joy that I felt when I was in choir. And I hope that you guys [YOLA musicians] feel that same joy in this, and you just do what you want to do. I mean, it sounds simple, but it’s really not. There’s going to be a lot of people that want you to do this or that. You know, sometimes it’s in your family, sometimes it’s coming from an outside perspective. You should never do what isn’t going to make you happy in the long run. And I know that that’s kind of tough to say, because sometimes it’s not that easy to do what you want, but I think that you should strive for what you believe in and never ever doubt yourself. And obviously we all doubt ourselves, but I think, just be patient with yourself and know that what you believe in is what’s right for you. Nobody’s going to take that away from you. And you know, you can really do anything.

COMPOSER’S NOTE
“Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time.
I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent Los Angeles Philharmonic has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie.
I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event… and I hope that today’s audience will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year.” —John Williams

TUESDAY DECEMBER 14, 2021 8PM
Tonight’s program begins in darkness with a Medieval chant written by the 12th-century Benedictine abbess Hildegard of Bingen. In addition to 77 original chants with original texts, Hildegard’s extant output includes religious writings, dramatic poetry, and medical and scientific works, as well as recorded visions and letters. The amount of surviving works by Hildegard is staggering and demonstrates not only her genius but also the regard in which she was held by her contemporaries. She founded her own convent, took extended preaching tours throughout Germany, and corresponded directly with popes and emperors. As one would expect from such a luminary, Hildegard’s music is completely unique. While sonically similar to Gregorian chant, it is not derived from it. Her melodies are personal reflections on personal visions. The text and the music of “Ave, generosa” exist together; they comment on one another.
The 17th-century Advent hymn “O Heiland reiß, die Himmel auf” is a desperate plea for the Savior to “tear open the heavens” and bring salvation down to Earth. The familiar chorale tune has been interpreted by many different composers over the years. Tonight’s program features three different versions: the first and fourth verse are a setting by the 20th-century German composer Hugo Distler. The second and fifth verses are sung in an arrangement by Johannes Brahms. And the third and sixth verses are performed in a new arrangement by the contemporary composer Jonathan Woody.
Renaissance and Baroque influences feature in the work of all three composers. Distler’s music, for instance, features long and imitative, but melodically
independent, lines. He was influenced by early music from a young age. While studying at the Leipzig Conservatory, he often attended performances at the Thomaskirche where he would hear the music of J.S. Bach and Heinrich Schütz. He also worked for an extended period of time at the St. Jakobikirche in Lübeck, a church with two Gothic organs perfect for performing early music. Distler joined the National Socialist German Workers Party in 1933 as a condition of his continued employment. But even then, his compositions were labelled as “degenerate art” by the Nazi party. The deaths of friends and disillusionment with his country eventually led him to take his own life in his Berlin apartment in 1942.
While often grouped with other Romantics, Johannes Brahms had a keen fondness and reverence for music of the Renaissance and Baroque. As a conductor, he regularly programmed music by J.S. Bach, Handel, and even Palestrina and Lassus. The influence of these masters is evident in Brahms’ meticulous part writing and voice leading. Carefully wrought fugues and perfect counterpoint are hallmarks of Brahms as much as they are of Bach. Nowhere is this similarity more evident than in the two a cappella motets of Opus 74, “Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen?” and “O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf.” “Warum” often gets touted as Brahms’ pinnacle achievement in unaccompanied vocal writing, usually with direct comparisons to the music of J.S. Bach. But “O Heiland, reiß” displays equal amounts of ingenuity and craftsmanship. The two verses heard in this program are uniquely Brahms: Baroque craftsmanship paired with Romantic harmonies.
Melding Distler and Brahms together are settings by Jonathan Woody. A “charismatic” and “riveting” (The New York Times) bass-baritone and composer living in New York City, he has seen his compositions performed by the Handel and Haydn Society and Les Délices, and as a soloist he has performed with, among others, the Boston Early Music Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street. Equally at home in early music and contemporary music, Woody’s compositions display his familiarity with the old and his fondness for the new.
This year marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of the German Renaissance composer Michael Praetorius. His compositional output is extensive, with the vast majority—more than 1,000 pieces—being settings of Protestant hymn tunes or Latin texts from the Lutheran service of his time. While always rooted in a German style, his later works showcase hallmarks of Italian influence, which came from his time in Dresden, where he was exposed to the music of Heinrich Schütz (who himself studied in Venice with none other than Giovanni Gabrieli). These later compositions feature both polychoral and chamber styles with textures and forces changing throughout a single work. Chanticleer sings two Advent settings by Praetorius: Martin Luther’s “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” followed by “Rorate caeli.”
We then move to a celebration of the birth of Christ with a series of German carols set by Praetorius and another Lutheran Renaissance composer working at the same time, the Berlin-based Johannes Eccard. “Ein kindelein so löbelich” and “Der Tag, der ist so freudenreich” are actually
PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P5 ABOUT THE PROGRAM
two separate stanzas from the same original song, though they are often set separately. “Resonet in laudibus” is the Latin-texted version of the familiar German carol “Joseph lieber, Joseph mein,” and “Psallite” is a macaronic text, featuring both Latin and German depictions of the birth of Christ. Drawing inspiration from Praetorius’ Italian influence, Chanticleer presents these carols with different arrangements of singers, concertato-style.
“Es ist ein Ros entsprungen” is perhaps Praetorius’ most beloved composition. Its tender melody and simple harmonization capture the sweet innocence and wonder of Christmas. His arrangement of the first verse is followed with a setting of the second verse by Jonathan Woody. This modern take on the timeless melody moves us seamlessly into the third verse, which again is a setting by Distler. Distler’s arrangement comes from his extended musical retelling of the Christmas story, Die Weihnachtgeschichte. He punctuates each crucial step in the story with a different arrangement of “Lo, how a Rose.” While only one of those arrangements is sung for you today, you can find a recording of all seven on the album Christmas with Chanticleer, featuring special guest Dawn Upshaw.
“Lo, how a Rose” is the familiar 1894 English translation of “Es ist ein Ros” done by Theodore Baker. However, there is another common English translation that Catherine Winkworth created in 1869. Herbert Howells chose this version for his 1919 composition “A spotless rose.” Already at this early stage in his career, Howells’ distinctive writing style is clear. He combines ancient modal lines with lush 20th-century harmonies to create works that are both modern and timeless.
We continue to explore the symbolism of the rose with two compositions written specifically for Chanticleer. The first is an arrangement done by the ensemble’s music director emeritus, Joseph H. Jennings, of the traditional German Advent song “Maria durch ein Dornwald ging”—here translated as “Maria wanders through the thorn”—paired with “What child is this?” Throughout the two songs, Jennings manages to capture both the majesty and the mystery of Christ’s birth. The second composition, “Rose of roses,” is a 2014 commission from the Swedish composer and organist Fredrik Sixten. The rose in this text represents Mary. While she is often worshipped for her generosity, sweetness, and mercy, Sixten uses a rumbling intensity instead to illustrate Mary’s nobility as the “Lady of ladies, Lord of lords.” Melissa Dunphy’s “The elements of the sun broke into song” captures the brightness of Christmas morning and the radiance of a rising sun. The text comes from The Book of the Secrets of Enoch, an ancient apocalyptic text in the Jewish and Christian traditions. In addition to well-deserved accolades for her fine vocal writing, Dunphy has made a name for herself with insightful and political works. Her Gonzales Cantata, based on texts taken from the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, landed her an appearance on the Rachel Maddow show in 2009. In 2011, Chanticleer performed her composition “What do you think I fought for at Omaha Beach?” which is based on excerpts from a World War II veteran’s testimony during a public hearing on the Marriage Equality Bill.
The arrival of the new day is
heralded in Dunphy’s composition with tolling bells on Christmas morning in “Carol of the Bells,” arranged by Joseph Joubert and Buryl Red. Joubert and Red are two powerhouses of cross-genre musical virtuosity. Before his death in 2013, Red directed the male chorus The CenturyMen with Joubert as his associate director and accompanist. They both have many compositions, arrangements, and orchestrations to their names. Joubert continues to perform as an accompanist and director, with choirs and soloists, both in churches and on Broadway.
A Portuguese composer of African descent, Vicente Lusitano’s name appears most often in music history textbooks in connection with an esoteric debate about musical scales. But in addition to his theorizing, Lusitano also composed many pieces of exquisite Renaissance polyphony, and many of these works are just beginning to be rediscovered. “Ave, spes nostra,” Lusitano’s homage to the Virgin Mary, existed only in original, 16th-century partbooks until Chanticleer created a performance edition for this program—which is freely available online at the Choral Public Domain Library.
The reverential, meditative tone of “Ave, spes nostra” pairs perfectly with Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” a piece that has become synonymous with Chanticleer. Every Christmas season, the ensemble looks forward to sharing this gem with its audiences around the country. Biebl’s setting is actually a version of the “Angelus,” a Catholic devotional prayer, which tells the story of the Annunciation and Incarnation. The TTBB arrangement Chanticleer sings in these concerts, as well as two other editions for mixed chorus, are published by Hinshaw Music under the Chanticleer Choral Series label. –Tim Keeler

MARIA WANDERS THROUGH THE THORN – WHAT CHILD IS THIS?
Traditional, arr. Joseph H. Jennings
Maria wanders through the thorn, Kyrie eleison, Maria wanders through the thorn that seven years no bloom has born, Jesu et Maria.
And as with child she passes near, Kyrie eleison, And as with child she passes near red roses ‘mongst the thorns appear, Jesu et Maria.
What child is this who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King whom shepherds guard and angels sing Haste, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own him The king of kings salvation brings Let every heart enthrone him.
Raise, raise the song on high The virgin sings a lullaby, Joy, joy for Christ is born The babe, the Son of Mary.
ROSE OF ROSES
Fredrik Sixten (b. 1962)
Rose of roses, Flower of flowers, Lady of ladies, Lord of lords.
Rose of beauty and fine appearance and Flower of happiness and pleasure, Lady of most merciful bearing, and Lord for revealing all woes and cares.
We should love and serve her loyally, for She can guard us from falling. She makes us repent the errors that we have committed as sinners.
THE ELEMENTS OF THE SUN BROKE INTO SONG
Melissa Dunphy (b. 1980)
The elements of the sun, called Phoenixes and Chalkydri break into song, therefore every bird flutters with its wings, rejoicing at the giver of light, and they broke into song at the command of the Lord. The giver of light comes to give brightness to the whole world, and the morning guard takes shape, which is the rays of the sun, and the sun of the earth goes out, and receives its brightness to light up the whole face of the earth.

CAROL OF THE BELLS Trad. Ukrainian, arr. Joseph Joubert and Buryl Red
Bells are in the air, Sounding everywhere, Merrily we sing, Happiness to bring, Christmastime is here!
Hark, how the bells, sweet silver bells, all seem to say, “throw cares away.” Christmas is here, bringing good cheer to young and old, meek and the bold, Ding, dong, ding, dong, that is their song, with joyful ring, all caroling, One seems to hear words of good cheer from everywhere filling the air. Oh, how they pound, raising the sound o’er hill and dale telling their tale. Gaily they ring while people sing songs of good cheer, Christmas is here.
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
On, on they send, on without end their joyful tone to every home

Merry, merry merry Christmas! Have yourself a merry Christmas!
Deck the hall with boughs of holly! Fa la la la la la la la la ‘Tis the season to be jolly! Don we now our gay apparel! Troll the ancient yule-tide carol!
See the blazing yule before us! Strike the harp and join the chorus! Follow me in merry measure, While I tell of yule-tide treasure!
Fast away the old year passes! Hail the new, ye lads and lasses! Sing we joyous all together, Headless of the wind and weather!

I WONDER AS I WANDER
John Jacob Niles (1892-1980), arr. Tim Keeler
I wonder as I wander out under the sky, How Jesus the Savior did come for to die.
For poor ord’n’ry people like you and like I, I wonder as I wander out under the sky.
When Mary birthed Jesus ‘twas in a cow’s stall, With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.
But high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall, And the promise of ages it then did recall.
If Jesus had wanted for any mean thing, A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing,
Or all of God’s angels in heav’n to sing, He surely could have it, ‘cause he was the King.
RUN, TOBOGGAN, RUN!
Abbie Burt Betinis (b. 1980)
Anticipation’s in the air, (Run, toboggan, run!)
The snow is fresh and waiting there; The children chatter and prepare. (Run, toboggan, run!)
Assemble sweaters, coats and caps, The mittens, gloves, and fleeces, The scarves and jackets, hats with flaps –
With buttons, zippers, clips, and snaps –So many separate pieces!
A vee of geese flies overhead As southward their migration, While armed with snowballs, skates, and sled, The families frolic, noses red, With noisy jubilation.
Oh, sledding teaches useful skills, Philosophy and science: Respect the steepness of the hills; And try again, despite the spills, To steer with self-reliance.
The safest and most pleasant way Is taking turns and sharing; Help rescue any runaway, And know the risks when you display Outrageous feats of daring.
Find happiness to hold and keep. The joys of just an hour Become a comfort, strong and deep To help you when the hills are steep With mem’ries’ golden power.
December days are cold and dark (Run, toboggan, run!)
In each of us there glows a spark Where joy and hope have left their mark. Soon Christmas day will come. (Run, toboggan, run...)

WALKING IN THE AIR
Howard Blake (b. 1938), arr. Adam Ward
We’re walking in the air, we’re floating in the moonlit sky; The people far below are sleeping as we fly.
I’m holding very tight, I’m riding in the midnight blue, I’m finding I can fly so high above with you.
Far [On] across the world the villages go by like dreams, the rivers and the hills, the forest and the streams...
Children gaze open-mouthed, taken by surprise; nobody down below believes their eyes!
We’re surfing in the air, we’re swimming in the frozen sky, we’re drifting over icy mountains floating by.

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS – Hugh Martin (1914–2011) and Ralph Blane (1914–1995), arr. Bill Finnegan
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, let your heart be light, Next year all our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the yule-tide gay, Next year all our troubles will be miles away.

Once again as in olden days, happy golden days of yore, Faithful friends who are dear to us will be near to us once more

A CHRISTMAS SPIRITUAL MEDLEY – Traditional Spirituals, arr. Joseph H. Jennings
There’s a star in the East on Christmas morn.
Rise up, shepherd, and follow. It’ll lead to the place where Christ was born.
Rise up, shepherd, and follow. Leave your sheep and leave your lambs.
Rise up, shepherd, and follow. Leave your ewes and leave your rams.
Rise up, shepherd, and follow. There was no room found in the inn. It is the star of Bethlehem.
For Him who was born free from sin. It is the star of Bethlehem.
Everywhere I go, everywhere I go, my Lord
Everywhere I go, somebody talkin’ ’bout Jesus.
They turned away Mary and Joseph from the inn.
Born in a stable in Bethlehem.
Born, born of the Virgin Mary, Born, born on a Christmas morning, Hark the herald angels sing. Glory to the newborn King.
Go tell it on the mountain. Over the hills and ev’rywhere, Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born!

ARTURO SANDOVAL
A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to introduce Latin influences into American jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist, and composer.
Sandoval has garnered 10 Grammy Awards and was nominated 19 times. He has also received six Billboard Awards and an Emmy Award, the latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of For Love or Country, the HBO movie based on his life, which starred Andy Garcia as Arturo.
His recent release, Ultimate Duets, features an incomparable who’s who of the most talented artists working today. This landmark album also contains an unparalleled mix of collaborations with legends and new-generation voices from the worlds of pop, jazz, classical, and Latin music, coming together for the Cuban maestro’s first duets release, including Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande, Plácido Domingo, Celia Cruz, Josh Groban, Juan Luis Guerra, Al Jarreau, Alejandro Sanz, Prince Royce, and David Bisbal. His most recent album is Christmas at Notre Dame, featuring several of the school’s music ensembles.
Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock, and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world and continues to do so.
Sandoval is also a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with the leading symphony orchestras from around the world. He has composed his own Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, which can be heard on Arturo Sandoval: The Classical Album Arturo has performed with the foremost orchestras in the country as well as abroad and recorded John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. His classical artistry has earned
him the respect and admiration from the most prestigious conductors, composers, and symphony orchestras worldwide.
His compositions can also be heard in movies, including Clint Eastwood’s The Mule as well as 1001 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story, At Middleton, Dave Grusin’s soundtracks for Havana and Random Hearts; in The Mambo Kings soundtrack with his Grammy-nominated composition “Mambo Caliente,” in the soundtracks of The Perez Family, 61, and Mr. Wrong, the documentary Oscar, and The Family Fuentes, among others. He also was commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose the music for the ballets Pepito’s Story Soul Possessed, as well as Oman O Men, and The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker
A 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and an honorary doctorate recipient from the University of Notre Dame, Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles while in Cuba and since his defection have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. One frequently speaks of Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but those who have seen him at the keyboard, lyrically improvising a ballad, or have had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz, or classical work, know that Arturo Sandoval is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted, and renowned musicians of our time.

DECK THE HALL
PINK MARTINI
In 1994 in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics, with the intention of eventually running for office. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world—crossing genres of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop—and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini to bring a little bit of Breakfast at Tiffany’s to political fundraising for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, cleaning up the Willamette River, and funding for libraries and education, among others.
One year later, Lauderdale called China Forbes, a Harvard classmate who was living in New York City, and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to write songs together. Their first song—“Je ne veux pas travailler”— became an overnight sensation in France, was nominated for Song of the Year at France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards, and to this day remains a mantra for striking French workers.
Featuring a dozen musicians with songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia, New Zealand,
and North and South America. Pink Martini made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 and its orchestral debut with the Oregon Symphony in 1998 under the direction of Norman Leyden. Since then, the band has gone on to play with more than 70 orchestras around the world, including multiple engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Boston Pops, the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, the San Francisco Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House, and the BBC Concert Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London.
Other major appearances include the grand opening of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, with return sold-out engagements for New Year’s Eve in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2016 and 2018; sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall; the opening party of the remodeled Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the LA Phil’s 100th anniversary party in 2018; the Governor’s Ball at the 80th Annual Academy Awards in 2008; three sold-out shows with the Sydney Symphony at the renowned Sydney Opera House; sold-out concerts at Royal Albert Hall in London in 2011, 2013 and 2016; multiple sold-out appearances, and a festival
opening, at the Montreal Jazz Festival; two sold-out concerts at Paris’ legendary Olympia Hall in 2011 and 2016; and Paris’ fashion house Lanvin’s 10-year anniversary celebration for designer Alber Elbaz in 2012. In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame.
Pink Martini has sold over three million albums worldwide on their own independent label Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog). The band’s debut album Sympathique was released in 1997 and quickly became an international phenomenon, garnering the group nominations for “Song of the Year” and “Best New Artist” in France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards in 2000. Pink Martini released Hang On Little Tomato in 2004, Hey Eugene! in 2007 and Splendor In The Grass in 2009. In November 2010 the band released Joy To The World—a festive, multidenominational holiday album featuring songs from around the globe. Joy To The World received glowing reviews and was carried in Starbucks stores during the 2010 and 2011 holiday seasons. All five albums have gone gold in France, Canada, Greece, and Turkey.
Pink Martini has an illustrious roster of regular guest artists: NPR’s Ari Shapiro, host of All Things Considered; Cantor Ida Rae Cahana; koto player Masumi Timson; harpist Maureen Love; and Kim Hastreiter (the publisher/ editor-in-chief of Paper magazine).
In 2019, Thomas Lauderdale and members of Pink Martini collaborated on a new release with the international singing sensation Meow Meow. This album, Hotel Amour, features guest appearances by Rufus Wainwright, the von Trapps, Barry Humphries (of Dame Edna fame), and inimitable French pianist and composer, the late Michel Legrand.
